Why wasn’t Joba in? Depends who you ask

Joe Girardi said that Joba Chamberlain wasn’t available because he pitched two innings on Thursday. What was left unsaid is that Chamberlain is injured.

Chamberlain has not physically been in the bullpen for two days as he receives treatment on a leg injury – apparently a mild left hamstring strain suffered when he slipped on a wet mound in Chicago.

As he left the clubhouse, Chamberlain was asked if he was getting treatment. He responded with a thumbs up as he walked away. When reporters sought a clarification from Girardi, he refused to give an answer.

Girardi also got defensive again when asked whether he thought Ian Kennedy had done enough to stay in the rotation. Given that Kennedy has a 8.53 ERA and the Yankees are 1-4 in the games he has appeared in, it’s a legitimate question. But Girardi didn’t think so.

“You guys ask me these questions before we have a chance to talk as a group and to my general manager, but I liked what I saw today. Four out of the five innings, he was very good. You guys are asking me to make decisions without talking to anybody,” he said.

“He’s in our rotation. I don’t mean to get irritated, but we talk as a group, as an organization. We talk about what’s best for all of our pieces, and we’ve been in here two minutes. I’m just saying that he’s in our rotation today.”

Whether Kennedy is in the rotation five days from now, we’ll see. These days, it’s difficult to tell what to believe.

All we know sure is that the Yankees have lost three straight and are back under .500.
