A-Rod aggravates quad injury

April
28

Alex Rodriguez left the game tonight after aggravating the quadriceps strain in his right leg. He said there was “no way” that he would play tomorrow night against the Tigers.

“If I had to guess, I would probably guess more than one day,” he said.

As to other matters: No word yet on Jorge Posada. … Some kook walked onto the field in the middle of the eighth inning and tried to talk to Derek Jeter. Morgan Ensberg pushed him away before the inattentive security people finally showed up. “I felt like a ninja,” said Ensberg, who is a bit wacky. The players were laughing about it later, but at the same time they were mad that somebody was able to get that far onto the field.

Kyle Farnsworth has added a cut fastball to his mix and used it effectively tonight. He has pitched well three straight times.

When you consider everything that has happened to the Yankees (injuries, sickness, suspensions, Joba’s dad, the schedule, rain, cold, etc.) it’s impressive that they’re 14-13 and a game out of first.

“Will I take this? Yes,” said Mariano Rivera, who is the best pitcher on the planet at the moment (11 4 0 0 0 11). “We have done the job.”

With the exception about the bad-but-not-unexpected news about A-Rod’s quad, this entry is hysterical.

  2. Neil

    Going back home still afloat.

  3. Bronx Liaison

Rivera is an absolute freak of nature right now. Orel Hershiser said scouts and hitters around the league are reporting Rivera is throwing better this year than anytime in the past 3 or 4 seasons. Not good news for AL batters.

  4. 56Bomber

It certainly does seem that Arod will miss several games… based on his postgame comments. Hey, even Girardi thinks he’ll miss at least one game.

    Ensburg seems entertaining.

  5. cc

If he doesn’t have to face Boston, I bet Mo can pitch another 10 years.

  6. Ricky Rios

all told – a job well done by the Yanks

  7. pat

If Shelley had been playing third instead of Morgan, it would have the kook who should have been scared.

  8. cc

Did Mo teach Kyle the cut fastball, Pete? I’m still laughing at the fact that Kyle named his son Stone. If they were to have a second son, will he name him Brick?

  9. Steph

It would have been hilarious to see Shelley play third when he got on the field.

I hope A-Rod heals up soon…it’s just one thing after another. Then again, this is the Yankees. Why am I not surprised? They need the daily headlines to keep their beat writers happy.

  10. cc

“the best pitcher on the planet at the moment (11 4 0 0 0
    11)”

Good to see someone who can actually perform AFTER signing a big contract.

  11. CanIGetAMooseCall

Good thing Ensberg can be an effective security guard, because he sure isn’t an effective hitter anymore. Stop pulling off the ball, Morgan!!!!!

  12. Dee

After what happened to Jorge and now Alex, everyone please rest an extra day or two after feeling better before coming back. Especially when we have good bench guys like AG and Molina who are doing good well, I say better be safe than sorry.

Arod at the post-game was talking about how this feels like when he injured himself back in high school when he had to miss a “few months”?! I know it was just an off the cuff comment but Alex please don’t scare us like that!

  13. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

    Pat: Line of the night!

  14. Amanda from La.

Ensburg is a ninja…haha. Hate to hear that about A-Rod. Man this team can’t seem to get away from the injuries!

  15. Melissa

You better believe Mo is the best pitcher on the planet! Hope A-Rod gets better soon, we need our regular bats healthy with Posada gone.

  16. JGNYC (insert Pro-Yankee slogan here)

Holy crap. When it rains, it pours.

  17. Buddy Biancalana

    cc-

is your reference about Mo a dig at Posada?

if so, that makes zero sense.

  18. James G

OH COME ON!!!!! When will this team catch a break! I hope A-Rod heals up soon, otherwise Melky will be batting cleanup.

  19. Dee

I hope cc was referring to Barry Zito.

  20. Brandon (supporting the new movement "Alex being Alex")

he needs to stay off the field until he’s 100 %, you can tell he’s trying to be He-Man out there, taking one legged swings and not being able to stride as much, keep him off the field until he’s 100 %.

  21. Bob

    Hey, a homestand starts tomorrow!

    What a novel idea!

  22. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

You know, Melky batting clean up right now might not be such a bad idea.

  23. randyhater

“When will this team catch a break?”

I take it you missed the 6th inning.

  24. EY

While our bats are cool and going down one and another with injuries, the pitching staff are picking the team up fairly well. This team is in a much better position this year compared to the same time last year. Give it a couple of months and our team will be unstoppable.

  25. Drew

Even though it would mean local flooding and a lot of make up games in July, the Yankees could use about 5 days straight of rain outs.

  26. randyhater

Mo is amazing. It’s a shame we’ve wasted him in the bullpen all these years.

Why don’t we move him and Joba to the rotation and let Ohlendork and Patterson close games?

  27. JGNYC (insert Pro-Yankee slogan here)

Maybe they’ll let Arod play through it and make it worse, DFA Ensberg cause Betemit is on the way back, and then Arod will hit the DL. I’m still mad about Moeller, I guess.

  28. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

    randyhater: LMAO!!

Dang, the comedy is popping tonight!

  29. JGNYC (insert Pro-Yankee slogan here)

I still like the roster, though. I love the pitching, I don’t care if they’re taking their bumps now. And I’m sad Bruney got hurt. Despite all the flack he took in here, I think he was finally putting it together, and I was happy for him.

  30. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

“Mussina left trailing, 2-0, but was taken off the hook by New York’s four-run inning, yielding to the bullpen. The game completed a stretch for the Yankees in which they played 18 of 20 games away from Yankee Stadium, the most April road games played by any club in Major League history.

  31. Bob

    Good point Randyhater.

I think we should stop wasting Wang in the rotation and move him to the 7th inning.

Imagine how great Boston would be if they took Beckett out of the rotation and made him their 8th inning guy.

San Diego would probably win the WS if they used Peavy as their set up man.

  32. Brandon (supporting the new movement "Alex being Alex")

“Imagine how great Boston would be if they took Beckett out of the rotation and made him their 8th inning guy.”

I’ve been saying that heck take Johan Santana and stick him in the 8th inning Santana to Wagner who can beat that ;)

  33. Dee

Speaking of comedy, did everyone read this by Ensberg on Phil’s blog? Ensberg’s got a good sense of humor.

“The next idea that I have is about opposing fans. I love it when a fan is yelling at me and says something really witty. Not just yelling to be heard by the people around him, but something really funny. If it is good, I will laugh at it myself. I want it to be funny. But let me tell you this, if you say “you suck” we know that you don’t know what to say and you probably aren’t very funny. To us it is like saying “um”. We hear it all the time and it is just a sound with no meaning. Take your time and don’t get caught up in the moment. Timing is everything and if you can think of something genuinely funny, you will have my respect.

Finally, the Office is the greatest show on the planet, and I would like to pose this question to all of you….

Would an average sized row boat support phil and me without capsizing?”

Night all. Heading to the game tomorrow. So excited to have the team back home!

  34. Bob

    Great point Brandon.

Let’s just hope TB doen’t wisen up and see the value of this.

Kazmir and Shields pitching the 7th and 8th for them? They might win the division the next 5 years.

  35. Brandon (supporting the new movement "Alex being Alex")

    “Great point Brandon.

Let’s just hope TB doen’t wisen up and see the value of this.

Kazmir and Shields pitching the 7th and 8th for them? They might win the division the next 5 years.”

    THAT’S A DYNASTY RIGHT THERE BABY !!

Kazmir to Percival to Price …AL CHAMPS FOR THE NEXT 12 YEARS !!!

  36. Pick

Morgan Ensberg quickly becoming a favorite of mine, his guest blog for hughes was great and now he is a ninja.

but on a good note it was a good thing a-rod wasn;t playing third tonight with his bad quad. who knew what that guy would have done.

its surprising to hear of this after what happened to Tom Gamboa(the royals 1st base coach who was assaulted about 6 years ago)

can we please make it harder for someone to get onto the field please

  37. Bob

I even heard that Sabathia has asked the Indians to let him pitch the 8th inning the rest of the season.

Not only would it be better for the team, but he would make even more money with his FA contract.

We all know how humongous those contracts are for set up guys.

  38. James

Anyone see A-rods splits vs Kenny Rogers? they are bartolo like… It would be a shame if he couldnt DH but, the season is of course more important than lighting up Kenny Rogers

  39. Sean the Disabled Mess

I wonder if Rivera taught Farnsworth the cutter.

  40. Abepeter

    Pete,

I don’t know if this was mentioned before but Rasner was named IL pitcher of the week. He’s first in wins, third in era and fourth in strikeouts. Maybe you can add him to your stock portfolio!

  41. Brandon (supporting the new movement "Alex being Alex")

BREAKING NEWS- Roy Holliday is asking to be converted into the bullpen, he saids it will help the BlueJays get better !!!

  42. Bob

    LOL

Think they’re getting the point yet Brandon?

    I doubt it.

  43. Nick in SF

It’s time to organize the First Annual LuHud Pledge Drive to raise a little money to buy randyhater, MoBoy, and the other “Joba must stay in the pen” gang a clue.

    Please give generously.

  44. Brandon (supporting the new movement "Alex being Alex")

    IDK Bob lets see…. :D

Fausto Carmona has elected to become the new Indians closer, Sabathia to Betancourt to Carmona !!! , the new # 3 SP Laffey and Lee now the # 2 SP !!

  45. jyates29

All of these injuries are exposing the lack of organizational depth in terms of position players. We’ve been drafting all of these fantastic pitchers but our best position player prospects are down in A ball. Hopefully Cash and the Stein-brothers will get wise and try and find some Hanley Ramirezs and Evan Longorias…I wish!

  46. Brandon (supporting the new movement "Alex being Alex")

Carmona comments on conversion: “The orginazation told me my stuff too electric for starting role, they want to shorten thee game”

  47. Buddy Biancalana

How many members of the “Joba must stay in the pen” gang on this blog are there?

    Must be in the hundreds.

  48. keith

    uhh, you guys are terrible

  49. Brandon (supporting the new movement "Alex being Alex")

Michal Owing has 31 IP he’s given up 11 ER, what is Arizona doing !!! channels Chris Russo’s voice: “PUT HIM IN THE BULLPEN !!!!!”

  50. batty

I like 1 out of first place – sounds much better than 4th ;)

  51. TIME 4#27

And mo does it again… HE’S THE BEST!!!

  52. Brandon (supporting the new movement "Alex being Alex")

SanDiego has one of the best pitching staffs but Hoffman blows too many games why oh why isn’t Jake Peavy in the BP 43.0 IP and 10 ER that’s the equivalent of 10 saves, he’s clearly hurting his team !

  53. Bob

ivates29, if you want the Yanks to get guys like Langoria you’d better be ready for some god awful seasons that get them the 1st few picks of the draft.

  54. Bob

Andy Pettite just released a statement lamenting his wasted career as a starter:

“I just look back and shake my head thinking of all those rings I would have right now if I had been setting up Mo all those years.”

  55. David

Yeah, Mo is really amazing. And I think the way Mo is pitching also helps Joba. I mean that’s an amazing security blanket when you know if you don’t have it one night when you go out there in the 8th there’s someone behind you to bail you out. Mo has to pitch knowing he gets the job done or the job doesn’t get done. And the best thing about him is he can pitch two innings when they need a 2 innings close. I mean people say Wagner and Papelbon are right up there with Mo, but I disagree. They don’t have the ability to get a 2 inning save. Every time they’ve been asked to do it, they’ve fell on their faces.

But this is just another reason why Joba should be in the rotation… Mo is looking as good as he ever has and doesn’t appear to be slowing down. It’s laughable when people say Joba should wait to be the closer when Rivera has shown 0 signs of slowing down.

  56. Wang IS Taiwan

Suzyn interviewed Ensberg after the game and he emphasized the point that they’d been away from home for a while by re-introducing himself to his wife and kids before signing off. He is fun.

  57. S.A.-Phil Hughes was saved and Joba will be a starter!

Can’t believe they have a home game tomorrow. YAY
    Go Phil!

  58. Wang IS Taiwan

You gotta admit that chick running out onto the field a couple of years ago to hand Jetes her phone number was great. Wonder what the guy had to say???

  59. RayBlay

omg I just watched the Ensberg interview from YES and he looks like he should be walking around some ivy league campus with a book in his hands not playing baseball… wow that was definitely not a typical baseball interview – he was speaking like he was actually having a conversation for goodness sake

  60. Brandon (supporting the new movement "Alex being Alex")

Fernando Alejandro, should have good material for his next journal entry after tonight

El Duque releases statement regrets not setting up for Mariano Rivera, saids dynasty could have extended if he would have pitched the 8th inning vs Anaheim instead of starting.

  61. RayBlay

did anyone ever mention david cone looks a lot like Frankenstein.. i mean the broad shoulders and that face… wowwww

  62. Brandon (supporting the new movement "Alex being Alex")

Pedro Martinez: “I wouldn’t have called the Yankees my Daddy if they would have made me a SU guy for Mike”

  63. JoeT YANKEES

it’s been a while since i saw Yankees Stadium… long enough that the new stadium should be ready to go tomorrow

  64. Brandon (supporting the new movement "Alex being Alex")

“One telling stat: The Yankees are 1-12 when trailing after six innings. There hasn’t been a whole lot of late-inning energy in his group so far. That’s largely a function of the injuries and the ever-changing lineups”

ok wait wait wait WFAN just said we are 7 – 0 when Joba and Mo pitch..but we are 1-12 when they can’t get the ball to the 6th….hmmmmm

  65. Nick in SF

By the way, someone named Frank Thomas hit a triple for the A’s tonight. I kid you not.

  66. Brandon (supporting the new movement "Alex being Alex")

that’s nothing someone name Barry Zito is really going into the bullpen

  67. Nick in SF

Of course Barry Zito is going to the bullpen, a guy making that kind of money needs to be setting up!

  68. MoBoy

I love how many people get happy that Mussina goes only 5 innings and we think that without Joba and Mo that Mussina would actually win that game.

I love the Santana,Kazmir,Verlander and Holliday to the pen jokes. But those people have no idea who will set-up for the Yankees and they won’t tell you besides FRansworth or some minor league prospect who is coming off a injury year.

  69. Nick in SF

MoBoy makes a great point. There’s no way that anyone not named Joba gets those guys out tonight.

[confidential to MoBoy: just trying to make you look guy, dude. You actually didn’t make a good point at all.]

  70. Nick in SF

[look GOOD, that is. See, it really isn’t easy]

  71. Brandon (supporting the new movement "Alex being Alex")

and I just love the doom and gloom of putting Joba into the rotation, I mean here we have legit MLB scouts have said how great of starter he can be, one even went as far as to state he’s the type of guy in a playoff game he most likely will leave the game up 2-1 or 1-0 …. but hey lets stick him in the bullpen I’d rather chance the ball getting to him down 4-1 or 6-3… stupid me.

  72. JoeT YANKEES

just because the minor-league call-up for the set-up man worked last year doesn’t mean it will again…. but I certainly hope it does lol

  73. Buddy Biancalana

MoBoy speaks the gospel, we all shall listen.

  74. Yazman

    Randyhater,

Lots of folks playing with you here, but some instructive posts helped me understand that it largely has to do with # of effective pitches (Mo has one, Joba has four), and stamina.

Early in his career, Mo was less effective when facing hitters for the 2nd time in a game due to his limited repertoire. He also may not have had 6+ inning stamina.

Joba has all the classic elements of an ace starter.

  75. Buddy Biancalana

    Nick-

The A’s are looking pretty good huh?

  76. lesjs1031

actually, I heard Barry Zito requested to be a lefty specialist so they could win the pennant.

  77. Nick in SF

Yeah, Buddy, I don’t know how Billy Beane does it. Getting rid of Haren and Swisher didn’t seem to be a recipe for success, but there they are at 17-10. I’ll be curious to see where they stand in a couple months, though.

  78. Brandon (supporting the new movement "Alex being Alex")

I never of it this way just because the minor-league call-up for the set-up man worked last year doesn’t mean it will again..that’s so right he was a SP so ofcourse it works this way, I mean who cares if Cox, Robertson and Melancon were drafted for the BP role and actually groomed as one too, it has to be a bust to do it this way, it just has too.

  79. Brandon (supporting the new movement "Alex being Alex")

I never thought of it this way just because the minor-league call-up for the set-up man worked last year doesn’t mean it will again..that’s so right he was a SP so ofcourse it works this way, I mean who cares if Cox, Robertson and Melancon were drafted for the BP role and actually groomed as one too, it has to be a bust to do it this way, it just has too.

  80. Buddy Biancalana

I’m not sure Zito would excel as a batting practice pitcher, on 2nd thought, could be his ideal role.

  81. MoBoy

NIck please for the love of the Yankees give me a name.Yes people can be good in the 8th inning.BUt can anyone dominate like joba in the 7th and 8th innings 3-4 times a week.Who will that isn’t coming off Tommy John.

Joba and MO are the best 1-2 punch.Who replaces JOba.I have been saying this for three days now.No one answers because they have no idea. They just say anybody can do that.THats saying Mariano isn’t a once in a lifetime player because anybody can do what he did and does.

Yeah Trevor Hoffman easily could have replaced MO because it’s only three outs.

  82. PoPo

Posada might not be out whole seaosn after all…

    http://tinyurl.com/65j34b

  83. Brandon (supporting the new movement "Alex being Alex")

Nick just tell him that Carl Pavano can take over that role, he wants a name !

  84. Nick in SF

MoBoy, do you read the responses on here? Ever? Every time you ask, people give you 5 or 6 names, and not once has one of those names been Kyle Farnsworth. And yet you always mention Farnsworth as a straw man to knock down, as if someone has suggested that he become Mo’s setup man.

  85. Buddy Biancalana

    MoBoy-

Did you takeover McLovin’s soul?, you sound just like him/her.

  86. JoeT YANKEES

I think we can agree that the Farnsworth bashing should at the very least slow down for awhile…. he’s pitched great

  87. PoPo

    Buddy

Just another reason for Pete to institute registration. He said it won’t matter because trolls can still get in. But if trolls had to register every time they troll, one troll won’t be able to use 150 different aliases within ONE comment thread.MoBoys probably McLovin and a host of other aliases…

  88. Nick in SF

MoBoy is Joseph McCarthy. Give me a name! I need a name!

  89. mel

Hello. This is the Voice of Reason.

    You guys look bored. :)

  90. Buddy Biancalana

Lakers sweep! Whose their next victim?

  91. MoBoy

Ohlendorff,Cox,Melchon. These are the guys who can replace Joba right now..With Bruney out for the season,Horne injuried,Marquez imploding, theres no one else who can replace JOba anytime soon. This Cashman plan not gonna hold.Everybody in the Pen not named MO and JOba either suck or is very overrated.

NOw a deal for Street of the A’s for the overrated Ian Kennedy and other prospects then maybe.BUt no one can replace JOba dominace.

  92. JoeT YANKEES

I really think Farnsworth has turned the corner and could set-up if needed.

  93. YanksAngel

I say from the shirt he was wearing, maybe he was wanting to ask Derek his thoughts on the Michigan Ohio State game.

  94. Don Vito A. Bellamo

anyone that thinks Joba…who has ALWAYS been a starter and is just pitching as a reliever to fill a role,,,neeeds to remain a 1-2 inning man, needs a new brain…..JMHO…

  95. Glenn

If all it took was for Kyle Farnsworth to add a cutter to his arsenal, he could yet leave the Bronx with a ring.
He has a defined role. He’s a 7th inning guy and occasionally needed to be used in the 8th. Nothing more – nothing less.

  96. jennifer

At Yankee stadium they can’t even take 5 steps onto the field. Yet at Jacobs oops Progressive Field they were able to get all the way out to the ss and have a player push the guy away before someone got there. Amazing.

I heard Bruney encouraged Farns to throw the cut fb.

  97. Greg Mandel

Peter, you HAVE to stop making excuses for Hughes. I said at the time and I am doubly convinced now that Cashman should have made the Santana deal. My reasoning then was, Santana is only 29, and what are the odds Hughes or any pitcher will ever be as good as he is? Very small. The Post is now reporting that he has “night vision” problems. Girardi said, “It’s something we will have to talk about…” YOU THINK??? You think maybe you and “Cash” should have talked about this BEFORE you decided he was better than Johan Santana??? Phil Phranchise? More like Phil Phlop, Peter…
