C-c-c-c-cold in Cleveland

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Apr 28, 2008 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

It’s 45 degrees and raining in Cleveland. The tarp is on the field. Supposedly they’ll be able to get the game in but it’ll be wintry conditions. The Moose will be delighted, I’m sure.

Back later with the lineup.

Pete- any response for that guy ripping you???

Hopefully it doesn’t turn into a start and stop type game that ends up hitting the pen hard again! Lets go Moose!

  3. mel April 28th, 2008 at 3:26 pm

Great, just what we want to see. Moose blowing into his hand the whole game. j/k. MOOOOOOOSE.

Hey Peter – will the yanks ever play a getaway day game?

Let’s just hope the pitcher going for Cleveland didn’t learn how to pitch in northern Minnesota.

  7. ItalianGreco April 28th, 2008 at 3:30 pm

Don’t be surprised if someone else pulls a hammy or quad.

  8. Brian from PA April 28th, 2008 at 3:30 pm

holy crap. this is getting pretty insane, yet another night game on a getaway day, and there is potential for rain delays!

if they get delayed at all it will be what, the 3rd or 4th time already this year that they had rain delays during a night game when they had to travel?

  9. mark April 28th, 2008 at 3:31 pm

Hey Peter – will the yanks ever play a getaway day game? ask espn

  10. Mike from CT April 28th, 2008 at 3:32 pm

“will the yanks ever play a getaway day game?”

Teams like to schedule the Yankeesa and the Red Sox for night games because for the gate. Short answer is, not likely.

  11. Brian from PA April 28th, 2008 at 3:32 pm

Hey Pete, this seems like the kind of state you would mention, what’s the Yankees’ record this year in games with rain delays?

  12. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 April 28th, 2008 at 3:33 pm

Ugh, that means it’s going to be cold up here again soon as well…

Man, it’s almost May! It should be warm! I mean I needed sunscreen yesterday!

  13. gayle April 28th, 2008 at 3:34 pm

The following is from the April 15th New York Times article when Joba left the team and catching u p with Jorge and they brought up Moller. Again the reason I bring this up is if this was written on April 15th and here we are on April 28th why is what the New York Times reported last night such a big deal as they reported basically the same thing over 2 weeks ago. I am just very confused by all the uproar and some thinking the Yankees were hiding something it was out there in the major media already it seems

“Posada said Sunday that Dr. James Andrews agreed with the initial diagnosis of a strain in the shoulder. A strain is a catch-all term for a tear, and Posada’s is located in the subscapularis muscle. Building and sustaining strength could be a season-long challenge.”

  14. SJ44 April 28th, 2008 at 3:34 pm

This is one of those nights were the results are secondary, IMO.

Given the weather, you just hope no other injuries take place.

You would love a win. But, i’d rather not see anymore leg injuries from cold, wet field conditions.

Great conditions for baseball. If you are an eskimo.

  15. Ricky Rios April 28th, 2008 at 3:35 pm

    Moose for 2
    rain
    Ohlendorf for 5

    yikes

but remember not to diss Girardi, Pete, otherwise the cuckoos will get angry.

  16. Brian from PA April 28th, 2008 at 3:36 pm

Rebecca, i know it’s ridiculous. in the past 4 weeks, i’ve gone from wearing my winter coat, to shorts and sandles in weather that approached 90 degrees, back to my winter coat. in southeast PA.

  17. Motown Yankees Fan April 28th, 2008 at 3:40 pm

Rebecca – that’s upstate New York for you! I went to college up there too. I remember a brutal snowstorm in April when I was a freshman. Made me pine for balmy Bergen County.

  18. Blargh April 28th, 2008 at 3:40 pm

Say, was the game in which Byrd pitched a gem while snowing in Cleveland last year or two years ago?

  19. murphydog April 28th, 2008 at 3:41 pm

    SJ:

What is the deal with the Union? A real players union would address this schedule abuse, wouldn’t they? Or are they still more concerned not to disturb the goose that laid the golden egg?

  20. Joe April 28th, 2008 at 3:41 pm

    Brian,
I think they are 2-2 in rain delay games. They lost to the White Sox and Red Sox, and beat the Orioles and Royals (Both games won by Pettitte.) Also, if there’s a delay tonight, Kay will ask how the rain delay affected Cone during his perfect game. At that point, those of us who can drink, do a shot. If Cone gets asked again, 2 shots, and so on…

  21. rodg12 April 28th, 2008 at 3:42 pm

It was last year, I believe, Blargh.

  22. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 April 28th, 2008 at 3:42 pm

Brian: Well, it’s certainly not winter coat weather in Syracuse, but I think it’s supposed to get down into the thirties tonight or tomorrow night, which is really annoying because I have a final tomorrow that I should be studying for.

Instead, I’m doing a crossword puzzle. Yipee.

  23. Brian from PA April 28th, 2008 at 3:42 pm

the last thing we need is more of our pitchers slipping on a wet mound. they should be careful about it and have the grounds crew fix up the mound as often as needed, seemed to work for Gavin Floyd a few nights ago.

  24. Drive 4-5 April 28th, 2008 at 3:46 pm

It’s hard to believe the Yanks could only be 1 game out of first place with a win tonight. Think they would have signed up for that when this road trip started on April 8?? I do!

  25. mel April 28th, 2008 at 3:47 pm

    murphydog,

Isn’t it painfully obvious that the players’ union would take up the ice cream cause before even thinking about the unfair scheduling for the Yankees? The Yankees know the deal (ahem, STFU Beckett). It comes with the territory.

BTW, Fenway’s set to break the consecutive sellout record. They have a big banner “Welcome to Fenway Park, America’s Most Beloved Ballpark”. GAG.

  26. mel April 28th, 2008 at 3:48 pm

    Brian,

Didn’t Joba & Farnsworth both get injured in the same game in Chicago?

  27. SJ44 April 28th, 2008 at 3:48 pm

    Murph,

Its a matter of whether or not a lot of players complain to the Union about the schedule.

Its also about what the Union will leverage in terms of extra benefits to their membership when it comes to discussing the schedule.

I know Beckett came out today guns blazing about the Red Sox schedule. The Yankee schedule is a joke and I know Angels players who aren’t happy with their schedule.

TV dictates a lot and its a bad TV deal (not from a money standpoint) from a scheduling perspective.

I don’t know why the owners would be happy about it either. There are more guys on the DL this early in the season than ever in history. That’s dead money to owners.

Its tough. When the schedule was prepared by hand, there was a lot more logic to it.

Now its computer driven and you have cold weather teams opening in cold weather venues while warm weather teams open in warm weather venues, night getaway games for day games the next day, etc.

I don’t understand it and definitely has had an effect on the players in the early part of the season.

  28. Doreen April 28th, 2008 at 3:52 pm

I didn’t realize Billy Joel was going to play at Shea during the All-Star Break. While the All-Star festivities are going on at Yankee Stadium. Going to be a great 3 days in NYC.

  29. Rishi April 28th, 2008 at 3:52 pm

you wonder why the don’t have a human being “logic check” what the system does…we do it all the time when we are asking computers to make decisions for human beings.

  30. mel April 28th, 2008 at 3:53 pm

    SJ44,

Pat Riley’s holding a press conference on ESPN News in a few minutes.

Are the people of Miami enjoying the Suns/Spurs series?

  31. whozat April 28th, 2008 at 3:53 pm

“I know Beckett came out today guns blazing about the Red Sox schedule.”

Poor Sox! Only three days off in their first month, and half the games at home! And every now and again, they had to play a NIGHT game before flying!

Try having EVERY flight at 12AM. Try having ONE day off in the first 35 games, and playing 10+ games in cold, rainy conditions.

  32. gayle April 28th, 2008 at 3:53 pm

What was the logic of doing it by computer was it purely for ease purposes. And I thought that they looked and perhaps adjusted somewhat by hand after the computer did its magic. Doesnt make much sense however you look at it.

  33. Mike April 28th, 2008 at 3:53 pm

This has been bugging me for a while – What is CMW’s nickname? That is, what do the other players call him?

  34. Steph April 28th, 2008 at 3:53 pm

I would gladly send them the mid-90s that we’re getting.

I think Joba was injured on a Thursday and Farnsworth on a Tuesday. Could be wrong, but I think they were injured in different games.

  35. Doreen April 28th, 2008 at 3:54 pm

Teixeira just had a nice hit over at Shea to drive in a run – a double that hit the right-center field wall. It would be nice to have him next year. Let’s hope the Braves don’t make him an offer.

  38. Fran April 28th, 2008 at 3:55 pm

Another cold night possibly delayed by weather. You’d think the Yankees would be used to it by now!! Probably another early morning arrival, but at least they are finally coming home.

  39. Hugh April 28th, 2008 at 3:58 pm

I dont think beign on the road is really that bad for the players…they get to cheat on their wives with much younger and hotter women. I would love being on the road if I were a pro athlete.

  40. mel April 28th, 2008 at 3:58 pm

Mike, Jeter calls him Wanger (like hanger)

    Steph, thanks.

“Mussolini’s line might be really ugly tonight….3.2 IP 11H 8ER.”

That’s a really good point, Hugh. In fact, his line might be even worse than that. And Girardi might decide to just leave Moose in so the bullpen isn’t blown up again. Moose might give up 45 runs.

Or he might pitch a perfect game. Yikes, it’s the not knowing that really gets to you!

  42. mel April 28th, 2008 at 3:59 pm

    Hugh,

Not too much time to fool around with the rain delays and wake up calls (not that I’m advocating a ship in every port).

  43. Scorpio April 28th, 2008 at 3:59 pm

Funny, the players complain about their tough schedules but how do they think their $$$$ big salaries get paid?

Prior to the commercialization of MLB guys like Yogi & DiMaggio prayed for a chance at the World Series just to earn the bonus pay.

The only legimate grievance should be that the season starts too early (in cold temps).

  44. mark April 28th, 2008 at 3:59 pm

CLEVELAND — Jorge Posada was in such a hurry to see shoulder guru Dr. James Andrews that he altered the plans the catcher and the Yankees hatched Sunday after his right arm was unable to throw a baseball.

The original schedule had Posada flying with the team tonight and undergoing an MRI exam tomorrow in New York. However, The Post has learned the All-Star catcher went to see Andrews in Birmingham this morning.

The results of Andrews’ examination, which likely included a second MRI exam, were not immediately available.

The Yankees have their fingers firmly crossed that Posada’s most recent shoulder woes won’t require surgery. However, two weeks ago there was speculation that the diagnosis of a strained muscle was actually a tear in the labrum area.

Posada never admitted to that or to getting a cortisone shot by a Red Sox doctor in Boston on April 12.

Posada was placed on the 15-day disabled list and the Yankees elevated Chris Stewart from Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (Triple-A). He’ll be Jose Molina’s backup tonight against the Indians at Progressive Field.

Chad Moeller, who performed well backing up Molina while Posada was out from April 9 to April 22, was designated for assignment late Friday afternoon. If he clears waivers it won’t be until after Wednesday. Even then, becasue Moeller has five-plus years of major-league service time, he could reject the outright to the minor leagues and become a free agent if he believes he has a better chance of getting to the big leagues.

When Moeller was sent out Friday, before the Yankees knew about Posada’s latest problem, Moeller said the Yankees had treated him too well to not go to SWB. However, there is talk the Mets might be interested in him.

Should Posada be headed for surgery, which would force him to miss extensive time, the Yankees are likely to explore what the extra catching market can deliver. However, they don’t want to give up something for a player they may have to dump in two to three weeks.

Former Red Sox Doug Mirabelli is a free agent, Mike DiFelice is at Durham (Triple-A) with an agreement with the Rays that if he gets a major-league offer he can leave, and Josh Paul is at Round Rock (Triple-A) (Astros).

Texas is likely to resume shopping Gerald Laird after recalling Jarrod Saltamacchia, the key to last year’s deal with the Braves that sent Mark Teixeira to Atlanta. The Rangers were looking for young pitching for Laird in the offseason.

AM I reading the George King article wrong>

Did King say that Posada DID get a cortisone shot even though Jorge flatly denied it??

He also says it could be a torn labrum again I am no doctor but if that was the case could he actually have played this past week. And finally I asked this a week ago is the shoulder that is bothering him now the same one he had surgery on a few years ago??

Cano #8 in the lineup — far cry from the beginning of the season when the talk was to slowly move him up. I hope he turns things around soon – I know he will, I just hope it’s soon

  73. Jerry-NJ April 28th, 2008 at 4:21 pm

Didn’t the Yankees scheduling snafu arise because of the Pope’s visit? Would seem like that Balt. series would have been at home, then it’d be a bit more balanced (14 home games and 15 road games in april instead of 11 and 18)…

  74. Hugh April 28th, 2008 at 4:22 pm

sorry mel, I didnt mean to offend you…its a crule world we live in =)

  75. Motown Yankees Fan April 28th, 2008 at 4:22 pm

  79. Doreen April 28th, 2008 at 4:23 pm

The thing about the weather this April is that it’s the weather THIS April. I don’t remember it being quite this bad for this long into the month in recent years. But I tend to not remember things like that. At least for the first couple of weeks, the schedule should be drawn up with an eye toward aleviating as many of the weather inconveniences as possible. You can’t guarantee no rain or no cold weather, but you can probably predict the weather will be warmer in Florida than Cleveland, and that you won’t get wet under a dome.

  80. wood is good April 28th, 2008 at 4:25 pm

According to accuweather.com, they should be able to get the game in.

  81. Doreen April 28th, 2008 at 4:27 pm

    Motown Yankees Fan –

    Maybe it didn’t help him.

I was listening to a Florida Marlins guy talking about how they were so impressed with Hanley Ramirez that they decided to move him from the leadoff spot to the #3 spot, and he utterly failed their. They moved him back. Their assessment was that it was too much responsibility for him too soon – young players have to grow into their potential roles.

  82. hmmm April 28th, 2008 at 4:28 pm

“Didn’t the Yankees scheduling snafu arise because of the Pope’s visit?”

yes, this is true. but there still weren’t any off-days.

it’s just really bizarre to see so few off-days in april. beckett complained about playing 20 straight games, but both the Yankees AND Toronto have done it as well.

also, a lot of the schedule issues are a result of the unbalanced schedule.

it is only April, and the Yankees aren’t going back to Chicago, Cleveland, or KC all year. that’s why they played through all that terrible weather. it’s nutty.

  83. Doreen April 28th, 2008 at 4:31 pm

So, isn’t all this scheduling-itis really caused by interleague play?

  84. hmmm April 28th, 2008 at 4:37 pm

“So, isn’t all this scheduling-itis really caused by interleague play?”

    that too.

    interleague play is horrible.

it was cool for 5 minutes 10 years ago.

  85. Brian M April 28th, 2008 at 4:52 pm

Brandon, Here you are, I just responded to you on the catching post.

Basically, I realize we shouldn’t move someone like Melancon or Heredia or Betances for Laird. We should keep the guys who have the top ceilings or who are next in line as NY cover. But we have legit guys like Marquez, Steven White, Chase Wright, Kontos, even Robertson, Jackson, Whelan, Veras or Britton are pretty expendable (obviously only a couple should go).

There seems to be this over reaction against making any trades involving the farm system these days. I am totally for building from within. I am for keeping our top prospects. But we have a very, very deep system right now. Sensible teams deal from strengths to cover weaknesses.

Arizona have a team built from prospects. It is a young team and they have one or two interesting guys in the minors. They also traded away Alberto Gonzalez, Callaspo, Ohlendorf, Carlos Gonzalez, and many others over the last couple of years. You can only have 25 guys on the roster. They kept Upton and Young for their outfield and traded their surplus to strengthen other areas.

Joba, Wang, Hughes and Kennedy are all pencilled in for the rotation for the next 10 years. It makes sense that we might want a lefty for the 5th spot – Sabathia is a possibility. Why shouldn’t we trade a couple of our 25 legitimate pitching prospects? Heredia, Betances, Pope, Brackman, Horne, McCutchen and others will keep things competitive and give great cover and bullpen options. But we have at least 10 more guys in the minors who will be regular major league pitchers. They can’t all pitch for us though. If we dont trade some of them we will lose half of them for nothing in the rule 5 draft in a couple of yrs.

The lower levels of the system are stocked. Investment in international players is growing every yr. Our farm system is booming, but we have to make the best use of it, and that means keeping some guys and trading some guys.

If the right trade is on the table we should even consider trading a top prospect, as Arizona did with Gonzalez to get Haren. We have the depth to make it work for us. And if Posada is out for a while and we get in a guy like Laird then in the summer we can package him with some young pitching and upgrade at 1st base or get a really good lefty arm for the bullpen.

We cant fall in love with our prospects so much we become afraid to act though. And we cant watch 50 guys come and play in NY.

  86. LathamJoe April 28th, 2008 at 7:15 pm

    Brian M:
I agree with your logic and have shared your position since last Season. The Yankee MiLB system is stocked with young righthanded throwing prospects and some should be used as trading chips before they are lost to Rule V. Add Sanchez, McAllister and JB Cox to those you named and that’s quite an excess of talent from the right hand side. Young catchers and lefty pitching prospects should be a farm system priority right now so lets use some of that excess talent.

In addition, Mr. Cashman needs to step up and acquire a quality lefty reliever. He had all off-season to get it done and came up with one questionable option (Traber) who has not gotten the job done. Not a good situation in this area (lefty relief)…and it hasn’t been for a few years!

The Yankees already have a back up catcher on their bench with experience catching Pettitte, Rivera, and Farnsworth. Too bad the day’s of player managers have past, I’d bet Joe’s in the best shape of any available catcher out there. It would be fun to watch too.
