————-

Forgot to mention this on the blog before, but Harlan Chamberlain is back home according to Joba. That’s good news.

————-

Chad Jennings reported on his blog last night that the Yankees added the former MVP of the Israel Baseball League to the Scranton roster as a backup catcher. The way things are going with the Yankees, Eladio Rodriguez will be in New York soon enough.

I expect to see Duncan playing 1st, with Ensberg at 3rd and Giambi/Matsui/Damon rotating at DH….

About Mussina. Moose is pitching good RIGHT NOW, however it remains to be seen if he can keep it up. I hope he can. However, if he can’t I think it’s the perfect solution to stretching Joba out.

The most Moose will go is 6-7 innings, we can “piggyback” Joba onto these starts and give him 2-3 innings at a time…and in the games where Moose lasts only 4-5 innings, it “stretches” Joba out more…

So, by the All Star break, Joba will be pitching 4-5 innings every 5 days and its concievable he then takes Moose’s or Kennedy’s spot for the 2nd half.

    Thoughts anyone?

  2. mel

Wow, Pete, you rank. You get a day off, but the poor schmucks gotta play? Enjoy yourself. Watch out for the papparazzi, you’re a marked man. lol. Good job on the PR interview @ Jeter’s gangsta. Rock Star, indeed.

  3. Sherri

    Any word on Posada yet?

  4. mel

    Sherry,

Check out the overnight threads. Someone posted a link saying he might not be gone for the season. Didn’t check it out, tho’.

  5. Law and Order

With DET’s pitching going even worse than ours, this is a Series we could sweep – if the offense was firing on all cylinders.

  6. berniepaul&tino

    ensberg is my new favorite

  7. Sherri

    Mel – thx! will do.

  8. jennifer

I’d like to see Alberto play 3rd.

I hope all those in attendence to night will chant pine tar at the gambler.

  9. Dr. Cox

I agree with a sweep. It would be a huge momentum boost coming off that road trip and would be a real shot in the arm. Lets hope Hughes has a break out game. I know it’s early, but I cringe when he starts.

  10. mel

    Doreen,

Saw your Morgan comments. Check out his Gameday photo. Doesn’t he look like the actor Bill Pullman?

Okay. Apparently, Mindy McCready is confirming the Daily News Story.

“I cannot refute anything in the story”. Uhh. Maybe because she fed them the story? Coincidentally, Ms. McCready has a reality show, comeback album, and tell-all book coming out very soon. Hmmm.

Good thing that Clemens could throw the ball through the wall. He would never have made it as a hitter. So far he’s 0-5 in retirement. Typical man. Got it all and it still wasn’t enough? Got to hook up with a girl?

  11. Jim Clark

    Great news about Harlan Chamberlain.

Do the Yankees (or anyone) have someone with high powered binoculars watching Rogers to make sure The Gambler isn’t scuffing balls?

Every time I think this guy has a world series ring and Donnie Baseball doesn’t I get sick to my stomach.

  12. Jocko

“Good thing that Clemens could throw the ball through the wall. He would never have made it as a hitter. So far he’s 0-5 in retirement. Typical man. Got it all and it still wasn’t enough? Got to hook up with a girl?”

    Frigggin’ A!!!

  13. berniepaul&tino

buster olney reporting posada does not need surgery according to dr james andrews… his injury is the same he had earlier in the year and will just require rest… great news

  14. berniepaul&tino

^just heard it on the kellerman and kenny show

  15. jennifer

Good news, but why would Andrews release the information when the Yankees already said they might not release the inforamtion today.

  16. berniepaul&tino

i dont know where buster olney heard it from but it was said that dr james andrews told the yankees today so im assuming someone in the organization told olney.

  17. berniepaul&tino

still waiting to see something on espn.com or maybe pete has some info to come

  18. mel

    jennifer,

Shhh. You’re only giving Pete ammo in the Yankees’ conspiracy theories. :)

  19. raymagnetic â„¢

Ed Price reporting the story earlier as well. I tried to post the link but I guess it’s stuck in the filter.

  20. Russell NY

I might be kicked for mentioning this. Any way the Yanks try to eat say half of Zito’s salary and give him a shot at finding his velocity? I know Matsui has been hot lately but maybe a mega-deal including Matsui and paying for some of Zito’s contract?

  21. Doreen

Great news about Joba’s dad. Good news about Posada’s shoulder. No surprises with the news from McCready, but withholding judgment on entire story.

    Mel, -

YES! Morgan could be a body double – well, a facial double – for Bill Pullman! I kept clicking back and forth and there’s NO DIFFERENCE in their pictures.

  22. berniepaul&tino

russell i think you missed the boat on the april fools jokes…

  23. Doreen

    Russell -

Huh??!! You’re just joshin’, right?????

  24. Dave

Don’t get too excited about Eladio Rodriguez’s stats in the Israel Baseball League last season. Last season was the first season of the Israel league’s existence, so to say that it falls short of American baseball standards is an understatement.

But, as an Israeli and a Yankee fan, I’d be thrilled to see a former IBL player in prinstripes!!!

  25. mel

    Doreen,

Well, there’s a tiny difference. Morgan has a normal smile, while Pullman has that half smile, almost like a sneer. lol.

re: Clemens. You think it was innocent?

  26. Alan

Toronto usually gives Boston fits (see 3 game-sweep earlier in the month).
It starts off with Halladay vs. Lester
Meanwhile, the Yankees take care of business with Detroit.

  27. mel

    Russell,

Good idea, but there’s little hope. They ran a special on America’s Most Wanted last year with a big reward for anyone who could find Zito’s velocity. Even Dog the Bounty Hunter’s tried. No luck.

I feel bad for Zito. The Giants not so much. Zito had ONE good season.

  28. Brandon (supporting the new movement "Alex being Alex")

Alan unless Rios becomes the BoSox killer I don’t see a sweep remember they released The Big Hurt, he was the guy that killed Boston.

  29. pat

When I saw the Ensberg interview last night, he reminded me of a young Emilio Estevez.

If this baseball thing doesn’t work out, he might have a future as a celebrity impersonator.

  30. Don Vito A. Bellamo

SWEEP !….thanks for the heads up on Harlan, Pete…now go grab some Cheetos and catch up on some Flintstones Episodes !!! ;-)

  31. mel

    pat,

Emelio Estevez! I haven’t heard that name in a long time. He kind of looks like Martin & Charlie Sheen. lol.

(meanwhile, Jennifer and Rebecca are thinking, “Who’s Emelio Estevez?”)

  32. hmmm

“I know Matsui has been hot lately but maybe a mega-deal including Matsui and paying for some of Zito’s contract?”

so the deal would be the Yankees’ best hitter in 2008 for the worst contract in baseball history?

you drive a hard, hard bargain.

  33. Don Vito A. Bellamo

    Good news….

  34. Neil

Let Clemens be an example to athletes everywhere. Be careful of entanglements during a career. They can come back to burn at any time.
The image of Clemens is forever wrecked and held in the same regard as Pete Rose.

  35. JDnotDrew

    Hip Hip Jorge!!

  36. Doreen

    Mel -

Truthfully, I don’t know what to believe. It sounds fishy and I can’t think of any good reason why a 28-year-old guy would be hanging out with a 15-year-old girl; unless he loved country music, heard her sing and wanted to help out her career since he had the means (financially and perhaps with connections) to do so. But, then, wouldn’t it have been common knowledge that he was doing so at the time?

I do know that 15-year-old girls are not always so innocent BUT – BIG, BIG BUT – they’re ALWAYS the victims in a situation with the older man, because we (not always correctly) assume the older man is an adult with some self-control and/or, at the very least, a conscience.

  37. Doreen

    pat, mel -

Not so much a young Emilio, but as he looks currently, Morgan, yet again, has an eerie resemblance to a celebrity. Hmmm….is he moonlighting???

  38. RyanM

ESPN is reporting good news on Posada. They say it isn’t expected to end his season. :D

  39. pat

    mel

lol. I guess I have to consider the audience before making comparisons but has anyone really not seen The Breakfast Club? It seems to be on TV almost as much as Pretty Woman and Dirty Dancing!

  40. randy l

” Or the players could just be stubborn jocks who think the team can’t get by without them in the lineup so they come back to soon. ”

    doreen-
it’s more than just the players natural inclination to wanting to get back out there. i know you remember the giambi heel spur debacle last year. most people forget ,but that caused major roster problems on a day to day basis that lingered for most of the early season. i knew from the beginning what they were doing made no sense.

i only know about what i personally have had experience in. but on the things i know about like the heel spurs, the yankees make consistently bad decisions in diagnosing and treating problems.

when you hear about cortisone being injected, you pretty much know someone is saying “i have no idea, let’s try cortisone”. one area this blog is weak on is conditioning awareness. the yankee’s organization is given a pass each year until eventually the players play themselves into shape.

  41. Mark Alan

    Tonight looks good.

The Franchise vs. The Coward of the County.

You know, I’m surprised Boss George doesn’t demand that the Yankees sign Rogers. He’s had a good past and he’s reached that age.

  42. mel

    Doreen,

There’s reports that he met her in a bar, went back to his room, but didn’t you know what. She’s claiming their affair didn’t start until later (what? 16?).

Here’s my take. He met her and some kind of relationship began. Innocent turned into something else, most likely.

Roger should’ve kept his hand out of the cookie jar. Any contact with a minor, especially when he was a family man and professional athlete was inappropriate.

Mindy, maybe young and impressionable, did nothing to discourage it. Maybe liked the attention from a father figure (gag).

Mindy’s mother is also culpable. It’s not like Roger was climbing into the second story window. She knew if and when her daughter was associating with Roger.

If my daughter’s a starlet, a responsible adult is with her at all singing gigs. (I’m assuming that’s why she was at a bar at the age of 15). That chaperone’s not letting her go with anyone, anywhere. Especially if that person pitches for the Boston Red Sox!

  43. saucY

the picture on morgan’s wiki entry is funny

  44. Motown Yankees Fan

Pete – thanks for the Harlan update. It’s nice to hear good news.

  45. Chris in SI

    >> “DET’s pitching going even worse than ours”

    LOL

    >> “we could sweep”

    LOL

Please! It would be lucky if the Yankees wouldn’t get routed in each game, considering a-Rod and Posada out and Hughes and Kennedy pitching. Obviously, grasping reality is not in your DNA.

  46. S.A.-Phil Hughes was saved and Joba will be a starter!

Hughes will get his first win tonight.
    Weather permitting of course. :)

  47. Doreen

    Mel -

Mothers of starlets don’t have such a hot track record in the last, I don’t know, 10-15 years, do they? Not only do they not actively prevent inappropriate exposure of their daughters, but they seem to push for it. The Miley Cyrus stuff right now is also making me shake my head. What are they thinking?????!!!!!

Interestingly, before Roger Clemens was associated with the Yankees, a lot of people did not like him – well, at least I didn’t and many people I knew didn’t. I seem to remember him having a reputation for being not all that likeable. I suppose when a person then becomes a member of a team you root for, you try to find the positives – he’s a gamer, a good competitor, all that “really” matters is he’s a great pitcher, and all that jazz. And he’s done enough good things that you actually start to root for the guy actively.

I don’t want to rush to judgment, there could be a relatively innocent ending to all this, but my common sense meter says, not so fast. It’s simply not appropriate for a 28-year-old married man to be spending his time with any woman not his wife, and certainly, and most especially, a young girl (not even woman). What could he possibly have been thinking? Maybe he’s just not that smart, and we’ve always given him too much credit to begin with because he can throw a ball really fast and really well and he could stick to a really tough workout.

  48. raymagnetic â„¢

“Please! It would be lucky if the Yankees wouldn’t get routed in each game, considering a-Rod and Posada out and Hughes and Kennedy pitching. Obviously, grasping reality is not in your DNA.”

And apparently reality is in your DNA? I guess the pitching of Kenny Rogers and Nate Robertson has really made you feel extremely confident when they take the mound this year.

The Detroit bullpen makes you feel good as well?

  49. hmmm

“the yankee’s organization is given a pass each year until eventually the players play themselves into shape.”

randy, do you really think the Yankees are doing that this year?

every report said that almost everyone on the team came into came in phenomenal shape.

  50. hmmm

“>> “DET’s pitching going even worse than ours”

    LOL”

    team ERA:

    Detroit: 5.03
    NYY: 4.45

    LOL!

  51. Russell NY

“russell i think you missed the boat on the april fools jokes…”

    Sometimes I get a little crazy :)

  52. Brandon (supporting the new movement "Alex being Alex")

we should have a good chance to sweep Detroit in this series.

  53. Chris in SI

and yeah, not to mention that Detroit’s lineup is heating up. It is afterall the greatest offensive force gathering since Normandy.

  54. Russell NY

“Please! It would be lucky if the Yankees wouldn’t get routed in each game, considering a-Rod and Posada out and Hughes and Kennedy pitching. Obviously, grasping reality is not in your DNA.”

Can partly agree here. Not so much that they will get routed because A-Rod and Posada are out (I believe in Molina and Ensberg) but because of the rookie pitching. I feel a little better after Hughes’ last two outings but Kennedy is going to get bombed by this potent offense. I hope he shuts me up.

  55. Doreen

    Mel -

It’s occurred to me that you got me to talk about the Clemens stuff when I had no intention of doing so!

    Randy l -

It sure would seem that the Yankees could certainly afford to do better in hiring strength and conditioning personnel. The thing this year is that it seems like every team is experiencing a lot of injuries. Now, I don’t know how other teams deal with handling those injuries and if players on other teams re-join the lineup too soon, etc., but cortisone shots seem pretty commonplace all throughout baseball, not just with the Yankees. Anyway, maybe it’s baseball in general, and not the Yankees singularly, that need to re-examine their approach to injuries and short-term rehab.

I think ARod’s injury is the most perplexing, because he is basically his own strength and conditioning expert, isn’t he? And he’s been in phenomenal shape and resistant to major injury. Even he hasn’t escaped. I can’t help but think the constant exposure to cold, wet conditions are contributing to the rash of injuries. But I suppose what you are mainly referring to is how those injuries are dealt with after the fact, and there, I would say, what do some other teams do that the Yankees do not, or vice versa?

  56. mel

What’s with the fake website, Chris in SI?

  57. SJ44

The Yankee injuries this year are not from lack of conditioning. They are the byproduct of playing in cold and wet weather.

Groin strains, quads, shoulder injuries, hamstring and foot injuries from slipping on wet grass/mounds, those are not conditioning issues. That’s an MLB issue. By ramroding these games through despite the field conditions the players are at risk.

Its not just the Yankees. Its happening all over baseball and its a big reason why there are more players on the DL at this time of the season than ever in the history of MLB.

Check out the White Sox-Orioles game yesterday. Getaway day for both teams. The game is delayed 2 1/2 hours by rain. With the wind chill, its 25 degrees in Chicago and they still decide to play. They play in a steady rain throughout the game and by the 8th inning, the infield is covered in water. They still play and it ends up being a suspended game. That’s a joke.

When you think about it, its a miracle this team is 14-13.

    The offense is completely dormant.

The #4 and #5 starters have a grand total of 0 wins so far this season.

The injuries. The schedule. I found out today that no team in the history of MLB has ever played 18 games on the road in April. That’s amazing.

All that, and they are only 1 game out of first. Last year at this time, they were already 6 1/2 games out.

They just have to stay close until guys get healthy, the schedule gets more manageable and (hopefully) the offense begins to show signs of life.

  58. mel

    Doreen,

    I’m good, aren’t I?

Anyway, I was just going to say that Myley’s parents are doing it right. On her Babawa Walters interview they made like they keep really close tabs on her. Was that a lie? Did something happen? There were some “racy” pajama party photos a while back, but I’ve heard her name mentioned in the last couple of days.

  59. SJ44

    Mel,

    That means he’s a troll.

This team hasn’t been blown out of many games this year and I suspect they won’t get blown out in this series.

They may not sweep but, they seem to be in every game, with few exceptions, so far this season.

  60. jay destro

Buster Olney reported on ESPNEWS that the initial examination of Jorge Posada’s shoulder injury showed no major damage.

  61. rb15

mel, annie leibowitz did a photo shoot of miley cyrus for the cover of vanity fair. one of the shots was miley wrapped up in a bedsheet with tousled hair. there’s a lot of flak going on about it, and questions as to whether her parents were present, whether disney knew about the shoot, etc. personally i don’t think it’s that big of a deal, especially not compared to the antics of lindsay lohan etc. the picture is suggestive but tasteful. and it’s not like ten year old girls read vanity fair.

  62. S.A.-Phil Hughes was saved and Joba will be a starter!

“Mothers of starlets don’t have such a hot track record in the last, I don’t know, 10-15 years, do they? Not only do they not actively prevent inappropriate exposure of their daughters, but they seem to push for it. The Miley Cyrus stuff right now is also making me shake my head. Can I just say WORD.
Now that whole Miley Cyrus Vanity Fair photo crap..um her parents were there. They knew what she was doing. Why didn’t they voice any objections then. Now they all regret it? Oh please.

Back to the Yankees-Glad to hear no surgery for Posada. :)

  63. Jocko

Miley wasnt even nude in those pics. If that makes people shake their head, I cant even start to say what I did as a 15 year old…

  64. Yazman

    “Zito had ONE good season.”

    You’re right, Mel.

How many seasons with 20+ starts and an ERA+ over 130?

    Zito: 1

    Andy’s had 3.
Moose has had 6, plus three more seasons right at 129.

(Clemens BTW is off the charts on this measure).

  65. gayle

Also heard this morning if you look at the standing across MLB the teams that are in first place are the warm weather teams coincidence? I think not.

Also you know the reason why they tried to play that game yesterday it is the Orioles only trip into Chicago sort of like when we had to play in rain in KC makes no sense.

  66. Bryan

Is it raining in NY because it is pouring here behind enemy lines in Boston

  67. Brandon (supporting the new movement "Alex being Alex")

hey anybody catch Hawks/Celtics last night :D

  68. rb15

one reason why her parents might not have objected is because they realize, as does miley and all her agents, managers, handlers, that miley can’t be seen as a child star and keep her career up forever. there’s no staying power in teenybopper innocent virginal stardom, eventually her fan base will get older, eventually she will get older, and so she’s trying to transition slowly into a more adult image now. i wouldnt be surprised if things like this happen to miley once in a while from now on – purely accidentally, of course.

  69. hmmm

    “You’re right, Mel.

How many seasons with 20+ starts and an ERA+ over 130?

    Zito: 1″

    actually he has had 2.

i agree that Zito was somewhat overrated, but i think this is setting the bar for “good” WAY too high.

i’d call a season with 200 IP and an ERA+ over 130 “great”.

Zito has had 5 seasons of 200 IP and an ERA+ of 113 or greater.

    those are 5 good seasons.

  70. ANSKY

    Russell NY

Did you really mean to suggest Matsui for Zito in any way, shape or form?

“Put the crack pipe down and come out with your hands on top of your head … ”

Not ten minutes ago I read the ESPN article on Zito being sent to the ‘pen to sort it out. In the 6 years since he won the Cy Young, he’s been a .500 pitcher with a 4+ERA. That deal would blow chunks even if SF paid all of Zito’s salary. NY already has a pitcher we might get a .500 season from for about 2/3 the cost and they’re locked in for only this season. Mike Mussina. If he can go .500 over 150+ innings, he’s done OK. The team needs 4 other guys to do better that that. If Moose can go 12-8 (and I hope he can do that well) he’s done more than expected.

Unless SF continued to pay Zito and NY continued to pay Kei Igawa (two unescapable contracts & losses) and the teams traded one-for-one. Then it would be worth taking a shot on Zito working out the kinks down in Scranton.

That’s a joke. Ain’t gonna happen no way in heck.

Anyways back to Matsui … people in general have been a little myopic with regards to Matsui. He is not washed up. He may be 2 years older than when he broke his wrist but the effects of that are gone. He fought through torn knee cartlidge last year and still hit pretty well for the season. His knee has been fixed. He’s doing reasonably well and getting closer to 100%. But I still get a sense many people think he’s at least as big a defensive liability in the OF as Jason Giambi (or Gary Sheffield) is/are/were at 1B. I really think Damon’s throwing arm is the biggest liability in the OF.

  71. JR Yankees

Good news on Posada. Let’s get him the rest and the time he needs to come back 100%. Next on that list…Arod. Give him all the time he needs and then some. We cannot afford to be without him later on in the year.

As for this series with Detroit. Their pitching is still very weak but out offense has been almost as bad. Detroit offense is starting to click and playing the Yanks just might get them over the hump…it does with every other slumping team. I wouldn’t consider this as easy series but one that we should definately take 2 of 3.

Rogers has played awful in Yankee Stadium and this season he is extra horrible. We should be able to take him down. Robertson has been starting his games well but walking a lot of guys and he seems to unravel around the fifth.

We need 2 of 3…let’s go Yankees.

  72. Patrick

“Is it raining in NY because it is pouring here behind enemy lines in Boston”

Rain is clearing off today. It will be clear tonight and tomorrow night but cold. Looks like rain is coming in on Thursday though..

I’m going to the game tomorrow night, psyched to see Andy pitch!

  73. Betsy

It’s been raining all day in Nassau County – I hope things are different in the Bronx. I really want Phil to get into a groove, but it’s going to be hard when the weather is so lousy for him. I hope it’s not going be like last Thursday – it won’t be good for Phil to not get real work in and the bullpen can’t take it.

  74. rb15

no on zito – the last thing the yankees need is another half-ass pitcher sitting around clogging up the roster. and matsui’s a great hitter.

if not even san francisco thinks zito’s any good anymore, i don’t want him anywhere near the stadium.

bryan’s right, it is pouring in boston today. and it cost me $75 to fill up my car with gas this morning. im grumpy.

  75. hmmm

“But I still get a sense many people think he’s at least as big a defensive liability in the OF as Jason Giambi (or Gary Sheffield) is/are/were at 1B. I really think Damon’s throwing arm is the biggest liability in the OF.”

i agree that he is not the Giambi of the OF. but he is below average.

and Damon is a much better OFer, arm and all.

first of all, it’s not like Matsui has a good arm despite Michael Kay’s incessant harping on his quick release.

second, range is much more important than arm.

Damon catches more balls than Matsui.

  76. OldYanksFan

Roger was pretty famous at the time, and there’s no reason for him to be diddling a little girl, with many others ‘available’, especially as she is not the beautiful. I’ll bet Mindy instigated it and begged to play with Mr. Splitty.

  77. Fran

Glad Posada will not need surgery. Didn’t Wang have a shoulder problem in 2005 over the all-star break? I think he rested until September and was able to come back and obviously has had no problems since.

Bryan-It is still raining in NYC but it is supposed to clear later this afternoon.

  78. jennifer

Mel I know who he is. He was married to Paula Abdul, yes I actually listened to her music (hangs head in shame!). ANd I know Martin Sheen is his father. :)

  79. Brandon (supporting the new movement "Alex being Alex")

Kevin Millwood/Vicente Padilla: The Rangers can only dream of moving Padilla, who is erratic and earning $23 million in 2008 and ‘09. Millwood, too, is expensive, but he could be perfect for a team such as the Yankees, who would value his stable presence in their rotation.

The Yankees remain deep in young pitching, and they’ve got two promising outfielders, Austin Jackson and Jose Tabata, at Class AA. As crazy as it might sound, the Rangers should include significant cash in a Millwood deal with the Yankees or another high-revenue team, enabling them to effectively buy prospects.

Millwood is earning $8.5 million this season, $11 million next season and $12 million in 2010, but his deal could be voided before ‘10 if he fails to meet certain innings thresholds.

Ken Rosenthal ladies and gents

i have no doubt that the yankees are simply playing themselves into shape like every year. the very fact that girardi’s running program stood out shows how weak the yankees are in conditioning. girardi is a well conditioned ex athlete, but he’s no expert on conditioning or injuries.

simply running , especially long distance running , is just the tip of the iceberg of conditioning. take some time and google dana cavalea. if you are impressed with his credentials ,i’ll be surprised. i’m impressed with dr. andrews, but he’s seriously involved until too late in the process.

there’s a big gap in the conditioning coaches and trainers and dr. andrews and other experts. that gap should be narrowed in house.

that said, i’m not going to get all worked up over it because arod with his resources will take matters into his own hands. just like posada eventually did. i’m sure giambi eventually got good advice on his heel spurs on his own. that was not a complicated injury and the yankees totally botched it up last spring. they simply didn’t know what they were doing.

i’m over being surprised about the yankee’s lack of conditioning expertise, but i am surprised that smart people like you don’t see it. my guess is that the issue simply goes away as the players play themselves into shape each year and then it resurfaces again the next spring and early season.

it’s a predictable pattern if you’re looking for it.

  81. Russell NY

ANSKY – sorry, should have been more clear. I wasn’t suggesting a Matsui for Zito trade. I was saying Zito for money then Matsui for maybe Cain, Lowry, etc. That would be a megadeal (not that I think it would happen but I can dream).

Not saying I hate Matsui and definitely not saying I would trade him straight up for Zito.

  82. rbizzler

Randy is back for more hating on Cash about conditioning issues. You must have been pissed about all of those stories about players showing up for camp in shape and Girardi placing an emphasis on running this spring.

One less bullet to fire Cash’s way, but it seems like you are still trying to blame Cash/the organization for the injuries (which have been dumb luck by the way). What gives?

Great news on Jobas dad, great way to start the day!
Then I have to read about Clemens and hiss illegal behaivour, coupled with Andys Juice use, Giambis, Posada not being able to recover from being on juice, and the rest of my day was ruined.
I long for yesteryear, before the 60s when the yankees stood tall, drug free and used to win with class and pride.

  84. Kevin CT

iggy.. since when was Posada on juice?

    jennifer,

lol. I’m just teasing you and Rebecca. To me Emelio brings the Mighty Ducks to mind. Someone mentioned Breakfast Club, but that was when I was in school, so I’m not that old.

Paula Abdul. She’s an odd duck. My only interest in her is that she was one of the original Laker girls and I think of her more as a choreographer than singer. How sad is that!

    Brandon,

Saw the highlights of the Celtics/Hawks game. Joe Johnson was Kobe-esque! He ran through the packed paint like a hot knife through butter. They probably don’t have much of a chance in the series, but at least they have the confidence that the Celtics are beatable.

I hope they check Kenny’s hands!

    iggy,

What you say may be true, but are you so cynical that you can’t give a good guy like Posada the benefit of the doubt? And you can’t say a tear is a direct result of cessation of PHD. That’s a fallacy.

Miley Cyrus is what, 15, 16 years old? It’s just a little too early to be thinking about switching from child star to adult sex symbol. I saw the Vanity Fair photo. I would never let my 15, 16 years old daughter pose for it. It was a tasteful photograph — if she was 18, 19 or 20. 21 for that matter. Not only was her hair tossled, but the red lipstick on her mouth was smeared. It was absolutely suggestive.

The thing with Miley Cyrus is that her fan base is what, 8-16 years of age, give or take? She is, like it or not, a role model for them. Don’t even get me started. I have two daughters that I have so far successfully navigated through this garbage, and a couple of nieces who I pray for constantly and whose parents are also having a tough time. I think it is absolute bull-dung that there is this false need to have our children grow up sexually long before they are ready to deal with it.

I am also aware that sex has been around, like, forever, and that teens have been sexually actively, like, forever, but it doesn’t mean we have to make it easier for them to be so, or confuse them even more than they already are just due to their teenage status.

  97. iggy

i agree they clearly are bandwagoners, and besides the 16 rings they won in 25 years that was last century and means nothing, just like the 26 rings we won last century

What do you think about HOF coach Larry Brown going to Charlotte? Over/under on when Brown calls Jordan a “young punk”? Broussard was just saying he wanted someone young and energetic like Avery Johnson. Why not just wait a few days for Johnson to get canned?

  99. hmmm

“Posada juiced in his contract year how else do you think a 36 year old catcher had a career year? ”

well, anyone who knows anything about baseball can see that his career year was simply a result of a flukishly high BABIP.

he hit .386 on balls in play, despite a LD% similar to previous years.

his numbers were purely batting average driven. his isoD and isoP were consistent with previous years.

in other words, he had a few more hits find grass instead of fielders.

implying that he took steroids is simply beyond stupid and just illustrates how limited your knowledge is.

    Hmmm,

Randy is not a conditioning expert either, he is just a Cashman hater.

Most of the injuries have occurred when players have made awkward movements (ie falling of the mound to cover first, slipping getting out of the box, etc.), and in now way can they be attributed to conditioning issues.

Randy just has some axe to grind with Cash and the Yankees over this issue and is ‘looking’ hard to see problems where they don’t exist.

Randy, do you really think that the Yankees, a billion+ dollar business with a 200+ million dollar payroll wouldn’t be doing all they could to treat and diagnose injuries?

  104. Brandon (supporting the new movement "Alex being Alex")

I can’t wait to see Bibby take over, oh boy if there are any legit basketball fans out there, they all know Mike Bibby is one the best, I would say 3rd to Kobe but in reality I’ll put his clutch in the playoffs against Kobe’s any day , and alot of people forget in Sacramento this guy was so close to knock off Shaq and Kobe… I just feel he has that left in him. Does he go off in Boston or Atlanta..all I know is I’ll be watching :D

randy has actually been pretty reasonable with respect to Hughes/Kennedy this season. a lot more than most people here.

if you believe in Hughes, than you agree a lot of what Cashman is trying to do.

conditioning is just randy’s thing, so he wants to hold the yankees to the highest standards.

it’s really a match , because Charlotte underachieved, Sam Vincent was a joke of a coach, Larry Brown in NC w/ that team and a high pick, they could make noise, Okafor is over there, Gerald Wallace could be his favorite player and Raymound Felton can get better, not to mention Jerome Davidson he’s a raw gem, could be Jermaine O’neal part 2… I love that match for Charlotte, I hate is because he should have stayed in NY. :(

  113. Doreen

Sorry for the rant, but I couldn’t let the comment that “at least she wasn’t naked” pass. :(

    Randy l -

As far as the players taking matters into their own hands – they are paid enough to do so. However, since they do make their livings based on how well their bodies are able to perform physically, one would think that ALL baseball teams would have S&C as a priority.

I would caution though, about credentials — Brian McNamee called himself a doctor, no? You need to be careful about that.

  114. SJ44

To all of you who “know” Posada, or any other player, took steroids. Where were you when George Mitchell was conducting his investigation? I’m sure your vast knowledge in this area would have been of great service to Sen. Mitchell.

Clay – just read it. It’s easy to criticize people when you have time to sit and document everyone’s actions. Who cares if Pete has some kind of agenda with the new Joe? This is Pete’s blog and people should be smart enough to think on their own two feet and not get offended if someone speaks ill of someone. It’s all a matter of debate. Quite frankly I wouldn’t read Pete’s blog if all his comments were objective… too boring.

Everyone has beef with someone, you will see that reading everyones comments on every post. I hate Curt Schilling and if I had a blog I would constantly knock him. Pete might not like Girardi because he is quiet and hard to divulge information for us to use. Not Girardi’s fault, you can understand the frustration (if there is any) from Pete. If Pete can’t get the inside info, what makes him so different from everyone else’s blog?

  119. rbizzler

    Hmmm,

Yes but Randy’s torch holding for conditioning issues is a little bit creepy, to say the least.

Last year he wanted Marty Miller’s head along with Cash’s for having the audacity to hire a guy who would inflict hamstring injuries on several players.

Now, despite the organizational edict that guys show up for camp in shape, which they almost all did, including and especially the guys that have been hurt, and the amount of conditioning that was done in the spring, Randy still has issues.

    I don’t get it.

    Brandon,

The Charlotte presser’s on espnews right now. Jordan just gave Brown a Bobcat jersey.

Brown’s good at turning teams around, right? Should be good. He’s strong on defense and fundamentals. I’ve always liked Brown and he probably wasn’t ready for the asylum he walked into in New York.

  124. Patrick

“Posada juiced in his contract year how else do you think a 36 year old catcher had a career year? ”

As I understand it, players are tested at least a few times throughout the season so it’s basically impossible that he juiced.

  125. rb15

no worries, Doreen – I guess it might be a generational thing (I’m 28). I agree that it might be a bit early for her to start cementing her adult image, but she made the tradeoff for a few more years of making a billion dollars.

Sad, but true – half of all the facebook/myspace profiles out there have pictures that are as revealing/suggestive as the vanity fair picture. Not to mention the infamous green bra pics from last week. There were a few facebook photos that came out last year of Lohan smoking a huge bong at a party. Do I think that’s a good thing? No. But I don’t think it’s quite fair to come down on Miley so hard – it’s not her fault, even though she’s not helping. With the advent of the internet and kids being on social networking cites, that meme of “what the older kids are doing” gets pushed down the age rank much more quickly and easily.

At any rate, let’s just be glad that, despite a few gaffes here and there, miley does seem like a normal, grounded, moral teenager. even if her dad is guilty of inflicting “achy breaky heart” on the world.

Through the magic of the internet, I was able to obtain “Iggy’s” Red Sox Fan Application. It makes for interesting reading. Here are some of answers on his application.

When did you become a Red Sox fan? “I’ve been a huge Red Sox Fan for years. Since 2004″.

So you are a diehard Red Sox fan? “Of Course. I didn’t watch another game after the Yankees swept them in 2006 but, I am a diehard Red Sox fan. I never miss a game as long as they win”.

Now, there is dedication!!! You should be proud Iggy. Red Sox Nation wouldn’t be the same without you.

Guys best way to deal with this guy is to ignore. Let’s change the subject shall we?

Like for instance, anyone have any thoughts on Farnsworth and this new found “cut fastball”? Sounds Mariano-ish to me…its’ a small sample so far, but will be curious if it really is a difference maker for this guy. Funny how this pitch got added in a contract yeah…oh well. As long as their positive results.

    Doreen,

Just watched the Ensberg video with Kim. He charmed her more than Jeter does!

He doesn’t look like Pullman there, but he’s very funny. I see late night variety show in his future. Maybe take over for Letterman? He’s a natural in front of the camera. Very rare for an athlete.

  136. jennifer

I couldn’t believe how cold it was outside. :( Poor Phil another game to pitch in winter weather.

  137. SJ44

I don’t think its just the cut fastball that’s helped Farnsworth. He seems to have fixed his delivery as well.

He’s much smoother to the plate than he was in the past. Consequently, his control is a lot better.

Except for the ball that “slipped” to Manny that is.

We have had so many stop/starts with Farnsworth in his time in NY. If this indeed can be a “start” of something big with him, I don’t care to find out the reason. I just want the results.

He’s a big piece of the puzzle right now. If he can pitch effectively, it makes the Yankee bullpen much, much better.

  138. mel

    Brandon,

You got to read Simmons’s chat now!

“One less bullet to fire Cash’s way, but it seems like you are still trying to blame Cash/the organization for the injuries (which have been dumb luck by the way). What gives?”

    rbizzler-

i’m just calling it the way i see it. i’m no conditioning expert, but when i’ve had specific injuries that yankee players are having , i am ,as a result, familiar with the cause and treatment of those injuries. the yankees did totally botch giambi’s heel spur injury last spring. there’s no doubt about it. there’s no doubt their head conditioning guy doesn’t have an advanced degree. you can shoot the messenger, but it doesn’t change the truth.

and my saying i only know anecdotal stuff doesn’t mean i don’t have some experience that gives me some intuitive insights. in a previous incarnation. i had the good luck to be rick peterson’s roommate . he talked about mechanics and conditioning. i listened. i’ve paid attention to conditioning over the years. i still throw most days using an arm motion he taught me in the white sox bullpen, and i can’t make my arm hurt no matter how hard or often i throw.

read or don’t read my comments or take what i say about baseball conditioning for what you think it’s worth, but i’m not just making stuff up with no experience behind it.
the yankees have a problem with conditioning and one of the problems is that they don’t know it.

sj said the other day said some problems are just part of the yankee culture. i’m saying this is one of those yankee cultural problems. it is however not the end of the world because as the season goes on they eventually get in shape or have the resources to find someone who will fill in for an injured player.

i just think it’s a dumb way to do business.

  143. Rishi

Joseph ( Boston, MA): Do you think Cano is going to snap out of whatever he is in soon? Why not bench him for a bit and play Alberto Gonzelez?

Buster Olney: (1:28 PM ET ) Joseph: You can’t bench him — you just keep running him out there and eventually he’ll hit. He’s too good of a hitter to not hit.

  144. mel

He gave them credit for taking care of business, which his team is not doing. haha.

He dissed him for putting Allen instead of Posey on Johnson, having no rotations, and using Cassell on a younger, athletic team.

If Farnsworth gets three games for the same pitch that doesn’t cause the game to stop, he has to get a few games right??

  146. Doreen

    Mel -

Ensberg has a personality, and he’s cute (not gorgeous, but cute) with a sense of humor. Give me that every time!

    rb15 -

I suppose a lot has to do with what you’re conditioned to accept. I didn’t mean to come down so hard on Miley, per se, but on an entire culture that just accepts photographs like that as just another day at the office. I do understand the pressure on her to keep up her popularity and to keep being a money-maker, if not for herself but for all those in her employ.

But doesn’t it make you at least a little bit sad that a young woman has to be seen as sexually available in order to be successful or popular? That pure talent is not enough? She is attractive, smart and talented, and that is not enough. Think about it. And I don’t know if you have children yet, but I think even if you don’t you’d understand that it’s a very negative message that is being sent to young women. The double standard is still in existence, and in my opinion, it may be worse today than it was when I was a teen and in my twenties. And it wasn’t all that long ago, (At least as I see it. :) )

    SJ44 -

That’s the bottom line: If Kyle Farnsworth can be effective for the Yankees for the next, oh, 6-ish months, who really cares how he does it (within limits, that is)???

  147. Rishi

JoeT – Buster talked about the same thing in his blog yesterday (I posted it somewhere and can repost if needed) -he said a comparable suspension for Wainright would be 6 games…

  148. Rishi

  152. jason

5 out of Melancon’s last 6 outings without giving up a run. Seems to be coming around after two rough games. Stay healthy and get innings for another month, climb the organizational tree during the summer and maybe be ready for the fall.
Cox is already up at AA and pitched a scoreless 2 the other night.
    Robertson has been lights out.
Any word on when Sanchez or Garcia will pitch in a game? Will they keep Sanchez as a starter or convert him to the pen?
If Farnsworth can hold it together for a few months the reinforcements will arrive and Joba will be in the rotation.

  153. Rishi

I agree – seems a little suspect though that I only really heard about it on Buster’s blog – where is all the moral outrage you saw after Kyle’s incident?

  154. Rishi

Nathan(nyc): Buster, have you had a chance to talk to Girardi recently.. some of the tabloids are advancing a theory that he is irascible with the media…

Buster Olney: (1:39 PM ET ) Nathan: It wouldn’t surprise me if that was the case. The writers really weren’t fond of him in Florida, I was told, and I’m sure that following the always genial and polite Joe Torre, Joe Girardi’s occasional impatience and temper and frustration will come through. I think Girardi is more the norm in that regard, among managers, and Torre was the exception. But let’s face it, Joe Girardi is going to be judged entirely on his W-L record, rather than his media relations. It’s New York, it’s the bottom line…

I doubt that Posada used steroids. He was a little lucky on balls in play last year (as pointed out above). Which makes the contract he was given even more ludicrous – because everybody knew (even $Man) that you don’t give that kind of long-term deal to somebody at Posada’s age.

  156. Brandon (supporting the new movement "Alex being Alex")

“He dissed him for putting Allen instead of Posey on Johnson, having no rotations, and using Cassell on a younger, athletic team.”

seriously they ran into the wrong team… The Celtics don’t have a guy that can stick Joe Johnson and Joe Johnson was a Celtic released to PHX now coming back to haunt them, Rondo can’t stop him, Allen can’t stop him, they have to double him because he’s to physical for Posey, so when they double him your a playoff performer like Bibby wide open and he just sticks dagger after dagger but the scary thing is, Josh Smith has woken up, if Zaza gives them anything and Horford contributes, the worst performer in this playoffs for Atlanta has been Law and Marvin Williams, tell me that team can’t upset the Celtics I’ll call anyone a liar.

  157. JoeT YANKEES - Joba = SP

Jason….. thanks for the update, that sounds great – hopefully one (or two) of them can come up and solidify the back-end of the pen when Joba moves to the rotation

I’m definitely on the joba=starter side now, but even if he does stay in the pen, i’m a fan of a 6 inning game come playoff time, 96 was great with mo, mo, wetland and joba joba mo would be just fine with me

    few thoughts:

NBA – saw some highlights of ATLs comeback after keeping an eye on the score. good for them. never really been a fan, but how could you not root for an underdog vs a boston team. i’m surprised people here read simmons.

Watson/Farns/Others who recent threw pitches like farns – Anyone know how the appeals process works? like a court? do they submit a written reason as to why they are appealling? and can they take recent examples as precedents?

NYYFAN.Com on Pete – absurd and trying to leech off of Pete’s blogs popularity. if you haven’t read it, don’t. he doesn’t deserve the traffic.

    Clemens/kids – meh…

  159. JoeT YANKEES - Joba = SP

I don’t hate the Posada contract all that much…. they have a LOTTTTTT of money coming off the books next year and they know that Posada will finish out the contract as a first baseman/DH….

    2008 = 23.4 million for Giambi
    2011 = 15 million for Posada

More production, more playing time for 8 million less

  160. jason

Joba yesterday was great to watch. The 123 looked amazingly easy and the last pitch was sick.
I have said this many times before – last year and this year was the young starters coming up to help (hopefully) this year and next will be the relievers. The breath and depth of the relief corps in the minors is tremendous. One of the about 15 options will be able to handle the 8th (or Farnsworth has a spring awakening) which is why Joba should be a starter. If he stays in the bullpen all year, then we have the exact same issue, or worse next year when he will have an inning limit of like 120. This is the transition year, bite the bullet at some point and put him where he belongs.

  161. mel

Brandon, isn’t Acie a rookie? I love Horford, tho. Throw enough lottery picks at the wall and some of them gotta stick.

What’s the depth chart for catchers throughout the system and where would Chad be if he passes through waivers?

He’s much smoother to the plate than he was in the past. Consequently, his control is a lot better.”

I couldn’t agree more. I wrote Pete last year suggesting that Farnsworthless’ herky jerky motion was causing his wildness, and he basically pooh-poohed the idea. But he did look much less bumpy last night and I think it’s helping. Let’s hope it continues.

    Doreen,

As a mom, do you let your kids read Vanity Fair? Not exactly the mag of choice for the teenie-bopper set. The funny thing about this ‘controversy’ is that her parents were on the set for the shoot and they didn’t have any objections.

Lastly, the picture isn’t really all that suggestive and I find it odd that people would think so. There is also no smeared makeup, by the way.

I bristle when the morality police rears it’s head and tries to act like they are behaving in the best interests of their kids.

    here is the pic:

sorry, meant to ask for the depth chart for the whole organization.

  165. rb15

Doreen – I do think it’s sad that girls still get the message that sexuality = popularity. I like to think that’s changing, especially with all the amazing female athletes out there these days. Not to mention Hillary Clinton/Condoleeza Rice/Nancy Pelosi/Justice Ginsburg/Justice O’Connor etc. (not to bring politics into this, but I just want to say that no matter what people think of Hillary, it’s exciting that there’s a woman out there with a decent shot at becoming President).

  166. jason

Mel, Just a supposition but I would imagine you have the following hierarchy for catchers:
    Stewart
    Pillitere (AA)
Cervelli (below P because of the injury)
    Anson (A)
    Romine (Low A)
    Montero (Low A)
    Weems
I probably missed some, but the excitment and upside is lower in the system.

  167. Brandon (supporting the new movement "Alex being Alex")

“Brandon, isn’t Acie a rookie? I love Horford, tho. Throw enough lottery picks at the wall and some of them gotta stick.”
Acie and Al are rookies but come playoffs that doesn’t mean a thing, they know if they contribute they can have a big impact in the series, Kalenna Azabuike, Andris Beidrins and Monta Ellis were rookies/sophmore players for GS last year, and they only knocked out Dallas in Rd.1 in what was the biggest upset ever in NBA history.

“What’s the depth chart for catchers throughout the system and where would Chad be if he passes through waivers?”

by default Moeller would be the first call up in experience wise

    AAA
    Moeller
    Stewert
    Rodriguez

    AA
    Pilittere
    Muich(Cervelli when he returns)

    A
    Anson
    Romine
    Montero

posada’s arm injury is just one of those things that happen. no one had any control over it. it is an understatement to say posada knows how to take care of his arm. i’m more concerned about what’s happened since the injury developed.

at the first sign of a serious problem posada should have visited dr. andrews. putting him in the lineup was not girardi’s fault because girardi should have been taken out of the equation because he’s trying to win games on a daily basis.

the symptom i didn’t like was the no pain ,but dead arm that posada was feeling. that’s just weird. when there’s some kind of injury , the nerves do some strange things. it’s the bodies way of shutting down to prevent further injury. getting cortisone shots , other anti-Inflammatories , and pain killers mask the underlying problem and more damage can be done.

posada knew something was very wrong and he finally shut it down and went to dr. andrews. now everyone has to cross their fingers and hope for the best, but i’d be looking for a good back up. this is more likely to be months rather than weeks.

  169. mel

Thanks, guys. Just testing the theory that you can never have too many catchers.

  170. hmmm

didn’t Posada have 3 different MRI’s that all revealed no damage?

you are right, going to Andrews immediately would have been better, but it’s not like the Yankees told him to rub some dirt on it. they sent him to get examined.

  171. Baseball Genius

I think Zito could be an excellent addition to the Yankee staff, he only has to be good for 2 innings, followed by Alby/Britton for two, Olendorf/Patterson for two, Joba/Wang for two and Mo.
Mid season, Cox, Melancon, Edwar and Sanchez could contribute innings too.
-We could be almost unbeatable. Zito could give his best ’cause he’d only have to go through the opposing lineup once.

Posada had 1 MRI that was sent to 3 doctors a few weeks ago.

Posada said last night Dr Andrews, Dr Hershon (Yankee team doctor) and Dr. Krepcheck (Reds team doctor and a shoulder specialist) all saw the MRI and all said it was a strain.

  175. SJ44

    Randy,

To be fair, Posada’s MRI results went to Andrews. They also went to the Reds team physician (the spelling of his name escapes me right now) who may be the best shoulder guy in the country.

    Andrews is Posada’s personal ortho.

So, you have the Yankees team doctor, Posada’s personal ortho, and the best shoulder guy in the biz all viewing his MRI. That’s an all star lineup of orthos. You can’t get better care than that.

They all concurred with the findings of Dr. Hershon (the Yankees Dr.) and found the injury to be minor.

In that regard, you can’t second guess how it was handled.

Now, if you want to say they should have DL’ed him, shut him down for two weeks, then see where they were, that’s open for debate. IMO, they could have done that and not risked any problems because its so early in the season. That’s open for reasonable debate.

Its a weird injury. You don’t have any real pain but, your arm feels dead.

Not needing surgery (if the reports are true) is a big plus.

That means he’s probably shutdown from throwing for 2 weeks. Then, its 2-3 weeks of a strengthening program.

At that point, they usually give another MRI to see how the area has healed. Then it would be one week of rehab games.

If there are no setbacks, you are probably looking at 6 weeks before he can be back with the Yankees.

The weird thing is, its not a major injury. Its just something that, when it happens, takes some time to strengthen the muscles around the labrum again.

Everybody who has played the game as long as Posada has some tearing/straining in the shoulder area. Its like a basketball player who has sprained his ankle a number of times. Its a weakened area.

The key is to strengthen the muscles around the rotator cuff to avoid further problems.

In Posada’s case, the best thing that can happen is happening to him right now. By having the chance to rehab this fully, he will be 100% and fresh for the rest of the season when he returns.

It will also help him strengthen an area that weakens over the course of the season.

The key now is for him not to rush back. For a guy who has never been on the DL before, that’s going to be a challenge.

We ain’t talkin’ about Carl Pavano here.

I’m sure Posada will be like a bull in a china shop during his stay on the DL.

  176. Brandon (supporting the new movement "Alex being Alex")

oh Baseball Genius is no genius go figure why would anyone take on that 08:$14.5M, 09:$18.5M, 10:$18.5M, 11:$18.5M, 12:$19M, 13:$20M, 14:$18M club option

SURE WHY THE HELL NOT ! I MEAN I FEEL LIKE WASTING MONEY FOR A BP GUY TOO, JUST TO SAVE GIRARDI FROM GETTING ARTHRITIS. :D

  177. mel

    pat,

Thanks for that. So, let me get this straight. A strain is a tear, a very minor one, but technically a tear? Surgery is not necessary, but rest will allow it to heal itself? Same diagnosis as the first one? He may or may not have aggravated/worsened it?

So, he just needs to rest for as long as it takes and the hope is that he’ll be able to throw again?

Another question is how long before he can return to batting?

Any doctors, physical therapists, psychics, beat writers here?

  178. pat

I’m 20 minutes north of Yankee Stadium right now and the sun just came out. They may be cold tonight but it doesn’t look like they’ll be rained on.

  179. CB

“didn’t Posada have 3 different MRI’s that all revealed no damage?”

He had one MRI that was read by three different doctors, including James Andrews.

If Andrews was concerned at all by what he saw on the MRI he would have told the yankees to shut down posada. His threshold for worry I’d guess is very, very low. His entire reputation is built on working with professional athletes. At the least if he wanted to see Posada they would have flown him down there the next day – he wasn’t playing anyway.

What Andrews saw on the MRI must not have worried him enough to even feel the need to examine Posada in person.

Let’s wait and see what happens. I think this injury is going to be less serious than what people are thinking just based on how minimal Andrews seemed to have thought the problem was in the first place.

This is posada’s first time dealing with any signficant physcial problem since his torn labrum in 2001 and his mind is probably tending towards the worse case scenario.

  180. mel

Never mind, SJ answered most of the questions. lol.

  181. rbizzler

pat, there is no way that the Yankees were proactive concerning Posada’s injury.

If you had been following the ‘pattern’ you would know that the Yanks are clueless about injuries (and conditioning) and they would not have sent the MRI to three different doctors (including the Randy referred James Andrews). A dirt and pine tar mix combined with a shot of whiskey is their usual method of choice for treating injuries.

    /sarcasm/

  182. rb15

it’s sunny in the city? that’s good news. here in boston, i’m half-expecting all the animals to start lining up in pairs any second now.

  183. jason

SJ – Is the Posada issue the same as what Schilling is dealing with now? I heard him on the radio in Bostno and it sounds like he may throw within a week or so. I imagine it will be a long while of working himself back – to what level of effectiveness is anyone’s guess.
Would Posada be available for a DH role ie does hitting effect the recovery process.

  184. Russell NY

I think Zito is faking it so he doesn’t have to play on the losing Giants anymore. Bring him to the Yankees and we will see 103 mph + stuff.

  185. sevrox

I think Wang, Moose, and Pettitte are doing what I figured at the beginning of the year re: won/loss percentage. Moose is a .500 pitcher at best, Wang will have a(nother) fine won/loss record, and Pettitte, at 3-2, should finish with about the same ratio like 15-10. Again, those dark rookie horses have the future of this season in their fragile hands…

  186. Patrick

Clearly the correct decision is to trade for Zito and transfer all the starting pitchers into the bullpen. Hey if Joba is better off in the bullpen shouldn’t we just put all of our starters there?

Wang for 2 innings, Mussina for 2 innings, Kennedy for 2 innings, Albaladejo for 1 inning, Hawkins 1 inning, and Joba for 1 inning pitch on even days.

Pettitte for 2 innings, Hughes for 2 innings, Zito for 2 innings, Farnsworth for 1 inning, Ohlendorf for 1 inning and Mo for 1 inning on odd days.

This way the game is 0 innings long! Our bullpen will shut everyone down.

  187. SJ44

    Mel,

Every strain is a tear. The degree of the tear is the issue.

Just like every sprained ankle involves some ligament tearing in the ankle. The degree of the sprain/tear determines the severity of it.

He could probably swing a bat now if his shoulder isn’t constrained. Which, if the public diagnosis of the injury is correct, should be the case.

His issue is not range of motion. That would affect his hitting. Its a weakening of the shoulder which affects his throwing.

That said, I would not activate him until his shoulder was 100% for several reasons. Its not in the teams best interests.

It creates a roster issue and that hurt them in the 2 weeks he was on the roster yet couldn’t catch.

Its also not in Posada’s best interests. He’s a catcher. That’s what he prides himself on being and he can’t catch right now.

Better to activate him when you get the full package rather than settling for a bat.

I can’t believe anybody think Barry Zito can help this team.

They have guys in A ball that throw 82 and can pitch to an 8 ERA in the majors. That would cost them 400K.

Why in the world would they spend 17 million a year for the same type of player?

  188. mel

    jason,

From what I understand, Schilling’s shoulder’s hanging by threads.

    saucY,

This is why I love Simmons. All chat long (NBA chat) he’s let these Clemens comments “slip” through but didn’t respond. Then this pops up:

Brad (Detroit, MI): Clemens 20K game on ESPN CLassic right now.

Bill Simmons: (2:24 PM ET ) Mindy McCready was five during this game.

  189. Neil

    Russell:

Faking or not, what team in their right minds will take Zito and his outrageous contract ?

  190. randy l

    hmmm-

the yankees don’t skimp on tests like mri’s. that’s to their credit. they are good on that end of things. and they did send a copy to dr. andrews to look at. that’s all good.

the problem the way i see it is that they don’t really have a solid chain of conditioning personnel all the way from the player to dr. andrews. there are gaps in there, and things fall through these cracks.

an example is when giambi last year was out of the lineup but not on the disabled list waiting three to four days for orthotics that could have been made in about an hour. the conditioning and training staff is just not on top of things.

i’m really not on a crusade here to get better conditioning for the yankees. they do have a trial and error way of making it through the season that eventually works. i would however caution against thinking of girardi as a conditioning and rehab expert though.

his job is to win baseball games each day. decisions about when to play an injured player should be left to others who have a more long range perspective

  191. hmmm

“Now, if you want to say they should have DL’ed him, shut him down for two weeks, then see where they were, that’s open for debate. IMO, they could have done that and not risked any problems because its so early in the season. That’s open for reasonable debate.”

    true.

but let’s not forget that Molina also got hurt.

  192. SJ44

Schilling’s injury is complete different from Posada’s.

Schilling’s rotator cuff has a significant tear in it. So much so, he wanted surgery and the Red Sox said no. Posada. if the public reports are true, does not have a torn rotator cuff.

That has led to a showdown between the two sides. Schilling’s personal physician has said there is a 0% chance he can pitch this year without the surgery. The Red Sox disagreed with that diagnosis and believe rest and rehab will do the trick.

Most people around the Red Sox believe Schilling won’t pitch this year. He has to do the rehab or he can forfeit his contract with the Sox. He, nor his doctor, are happy about it because they don’t think it will get him back on the mound this year.

Its a real war of the worlds between the two sides and its pretty ugly.

  193. Russell NY

    Neil:

“Faking or not, what team in their right minds will take Zito and his outrageous contract ?”

I was being sarcastic. No one would take his outrageous contract, unless of course the Giants made a decision to cut their losses and offer him at a heavy discount. They wouldn’t do that of course… their best plan of action would be to get him on track (whether to trade or keep)… but if you think you could fix him at half the price it might be worth looking into.

  194. jason

Yeah I live in Boston and it was quite interesting during spring training. Schilling, at least publicly, is talking up the rehab, but as was said I can’t imagine he comes back close to his reduced self.
Boston has many of the same pitching issues as the Yanks do. Lester can’t go more than 5 and has shaky control. Daisuke can’t go more than 5-6 and so far is not consistent enough to be a true #2. The bullpen outside of Papelbon and Okajima is very, very suspect at the moment. One would think the league would figure out Okajima, but they haven’t yet. But hey – they have Craig Hansen waiting in the wings.
Ortiz made like a flying what the other day sliding into first, hurt his knee and hasn’t played the last two games. Casey is injured. Drew after looking great the first two weeks of the season is now down to hitting below 300.
It will be interesting over the season to see how these two teams progress and address their weaknesses. There does not seem to be a complete team in the AL this year.

  195. Brandon (supporting the new movement "Alex being Alex")

LOL a JETS fan made this

  196. jason

Look – we may have found a taker for Zito and his contract:

    from the Fresno Beehive:

In San Francisco, Barry Zito is just another hippie with an acoustic guitar and an 80-mph fastball. In Fresno, he could be a God … Picture it: Zito could use that absurd $126 mill contact of his to buy the Security Bank Building and live on whatever floor he wished that day. He could play his guitar at Cafe Corazon on the days he’s not pitching. Heck, he could even be mayor …

The rest of baseball is mocking Barry Zito. But in Fresno, we know how it feels to be mocked. Together, Fresno and Zito could form like Voltron and rise up as one powerful force. It could the greatest curveball that Barry Zito ever threw.

  197. 108 stitches

For the short term, Jorge needs to go to warm weathered Tampa (he has a home there) and work out at the facilities to keep in baseball shape. Running to keep his legs strong, light hitting, but no throwing until he gets the green light.
Join the team in 2 weeks and ease his way off the DL.

  198. Patrick

“Posada. if the public reports are true, does not have a torn rotator cuff”

Actually, technically he does. The rotator cuff consists of 4 muscles in the shoulder, one of which is the subscapularis muscle. Like you said earlier every “strain” is actually a low-grade tear. It was reported this week that he has a tear in the subscapularis muscle so it is in fact a rotator cuff injury. Lucky for us it’s not that serious and he doesn’t need surgery. My guess is he’ll be back in 4-6 weeks.

  199. Russell NY

Maybe I am an idiot for bringing up the Zito thing. I see a lot of people saying they can find people in A ball to pitch on his level.

But those A ball pitchers weren’t once young, ace, dominant, major league pitchers. If you picked him up (at a discount) it wouldn’t be all that crazy when you consider the upside. Surgery, new mechanics, ? Whoever figures out his problem is going to start benefiting.

No, Vanity Fair is not a magazine I had in my house when my girls were 15. But didn’t you read magazines at 15 that your mom didn’t have in the house? I did.

Still, what’s the audience? Annie Leibowitz is an incredible photographer, well-respected and takes very artful photographs. I’m certain that’s what they signed on for. Again, I still don’t know just how sexy you want a 15-year-old to look, even in a woman’s magazine.

On the more positive note, I do hope that today’s young women do look toward the Condoleeza Rices, Hillary Clintons, the amazing women’s basketball teams, and the very athletic and ambitious women competing in golf and tennis, and the many other women who are succeeding in ways we should be applauding.

I’m really not a prude, believe me. :)

Regarding Posada, and all the other injured parties. To me it seems that the Yankees are very reluctant to put a player on the disabled list if he has never been on it before. They seem to be too understanding, for lack of a better work, of a player’s desire to maintain a DL-free career. I understand that to them it is something to be proud of, but aside from compromising their own healing process (coming back to play too soon), it also compromises the team’s ability to cover for that player when he can’t play by allowing the team to be short-handed; and if they are not playing at 100%, or, let’s be honest, even 75% as I’m sure most players do every day anyway, they aren’t as productive as a team needs them to be. Whether it’s not being able to reach a ground ball or fly ball to record an out, or not being able to beat a slow grounder to first, it is hurting the team. I will really never understand why that is okay.

if a subscapularis is part of the rotator cuff, it’s kind of crazy that posada wasn’t feeling pain. i guess it’s a much more complicated muscle (muscle group?) than i thought. i was diagnosed with a torn rotator cuff from a new years eve incident, but it turned out to be a fractured greater tuberosity, which gives a lot of the same symptoms since it is a bone that the rotator cuff connects to.

I’ve got a friend who is a Physical Therapist and I have her on speed dial for injury questions and when my husband forgets he’s not 20 anymore. She is not a doctor but she will occasionally play one for Internet purposes.

Her guess on Posada is 14-21 days to rest and re-strengthen for a minor strain if no additional damage was found yesterday.

She’s been going back and forth with me about Jeter and A-Rods quads for a few weeks. We had talked about Jeters quad when it happened and she said 5-14 days for a minor quad for an athlete with his body type. When I asked what body type had to do with it, she said people with larger more muscler quads and hamstrings usually take longer to heal them.

After A-Rod hurt his quad, she sent me an email that said A-ROD BODY TYPE- 7 to 21 days. When he came back after 4 days, she sent me another email that said BIG MISTAKE. This morning I got an email that said TOLD YOU SO!

I don’t know if you remember the Brooke Shields ads for Calvin Klein jeans back in the 70s. That caused a lot of hub-bub, too. I remember at the time thinking that people were over-reacting. Also a couple of her movies capitalized on her look, which was mature for her age. Maybe I am just older now, with daughters of my own, and looking at the entire situation through very different eyes.

The biggest difference that I see though, in the two situations, is the Miss Cyrus really is a role model for those younger girls, and I don’t recall Brooke Shields having that honor. She was a model and a celebrity, but there was no “Hannah Montanna”-like craze surrounding her.

And now, I’ll jump quickly down from my soapbox. :)

  208. ray (sox fan)

    Jason wrote,

“Boston has many of the same pitching issues as the Yanks do.”

I actually agree with Jason’s evaluation. As a Sox fan I am a bit more concerned right now with the bullpen than the starting pitching.

In this recent losing streak in at least three of the five games the starting pitching did an outstanding job but questions about the bullpen affected the games.

In Bucholtz’s game he had a one hitter going into the 8th inning but he was tiring and I think Francona should have replaced him then, but didn’t.

The jury is still out on Dice-K and Lester just as I think the jury is still out on Hughes and Kennedy.

Anyone who says that neither the Sox or the Yankees have any weaknesses are merely cheerleaders and as Peter has told certain individuals on here they should put down their poms poms.

“Could the D-backs actually get to — and win — the Series this year…”

Arizona is a very good team and if their young hitters have taken a step forward this year then they are very dangerous. Last year many of their younger hitters had disappointing years so their improvement this year isn’t that out of the blue.

Stephen Drew and Connor Jackson being better than last year isn’t that much of a stretch (though Jackson is probably not this good). Chris Young building on what he did last year is something you could expect.

Justin Upton – I think that’s the question for them. He does not need to be and probably not will keep being a 1.000 OPS player. But if he’s even a solid power bat then that team becomes a very complete team.

They lead the NL’s in runs scored (over 6 a game) and have the best run differential in baseball (last year part of what made their playoff run so fluky was that they had a negative run differential – not going to be the case this year).

Even after trading Valverde their bull pen has been very good. And they called up Max Scherzer yesterday and put him in the pen – he has one of the best fastballs in the minors and will give them another weapon.

And their starting pitching is of course terrific. Wouldn’t want to face Webb and Haren in a short series.

That’s a good team. If they continue hitting that’s going to be one of the strongest teams the NL has seen in quite a few years.

    Gayle -

That’s a really interesting question. I’d love to know the answer to that, as well.

  212. Yankee Jay

Whoa, those #’s for Zito are staggering when you see the yearly breakdown. Giant fans must feel like hurling when they look at that.

    08:$14.5M, 09:$18.5M, 10:$18.5M, 11:$18.5M, 12:$19M, 13:$20M, 14:$18M club option

  213. Mark Alan

I found this comment from SJ44 to be a dose of realism to help one to resist the temptation to think the sky is falling.

I’d have liked to have seen the Yanks come out of ST and establish dominance, destroying all in their paths. I almost expected things to pick up where they left off last year, late in the season, before the Attack of the Midges in Cleveland.

It’s a different year, and several of the dynamics have changed dramtically. A-Rod doesn’t own the world. (He was tied with Giambi in RBIs.) And the pitching staff, the younger part of it, has to settle into its groove. One nice game, and I think Hughes will be okay. He’ll be back to his often-dominating self, pre-injury and in game 2. IPK’s going to be a good pitcher no matter what.

The bright spots this season, I think, have been Wang and… Ensurg. And Melky’s arm and swinging-for-the-fences. (Mo goes without saying. He never surprises me.)

Robbie’s coming back. Abreu did last year.

I’d like for Shelly Duncan rip the cover off a baseball. (With his bat.)

Harlan Chamberlain is feeling better, and the Yankees could catch the Mighty World Chamipion Red Sox at any moment, despite having spent most of April on the road.

The Tigers were overrated. The Yankees weren’t.

Curt Schrilling was spotted recently with sunglasses hanging off a stool at a Dunkin’ Donuts with a plate full of jelly cremes. It must be good rehab for his bum shoulder.

That’s only $127 million (109 after the club option). Pocket change.

Ray – I live in Boston so I see many of the games and listen to sports radio.
One positive is it appears early on the Bucholz is the real deal. He has been a little inconsistent in his starts but has had two absolutely dominating ones. So far of the young starters (Joba excluded for now): Lester, Bucholz, Hughes and Kennedy he has shown the most this year.
Hopefully for us Yankee fans Hughes will start showing his worth. With that said Hughes had a decent first start, two pretty bad starts, a good start for five innings and a great start for two innings.

  217. CB

    ray,

I agree with your assessment. Both teams have questions with regards to pitching. The yankees more than the sox in the rotation primarily because of Beckett.

I’m working on the assumption that Joba will move to the rotation – that’ll decrease some of the advantage the sox have in terms of the rotation.

I think the division will come down to how the bull pens perform as the season goes along and the innings pile up on both teams relievers.

  218. rbizzler

    Doreen,

Fair enough, but I really don’t think the photo was all that risque. I personally don’t care either way, but was curious and went to the vanity fair site to check it out. The behind the scenes video presented the shoot as a very tame environment, not some over-sexed slumber party.

This situation strikes me as backlash against the Spears fall from grace where parents were shocked that they let their kids idolize someone who turned out so poorly. The problem with Spears is that she had no parental guidance as she was old enough (ie over 18) to control her own finances.

These situations are not exactly similar as Billy Ray’s kid has a family-based support system that is aware of the pitfalls of the ‘business.’

I don’t have the opportunity to watch Hughes pitch on a regular basis but I really do think the Yankees made the right decision in keeping him rather than trading for Santana.

I like Hughes and I hope he does well…..just not against the Sox! Seriously I think he will became a mainstay on the Yankee rotation.

  220. Stacy

I am a new baseball/yankees fan. Can someone recommand a good book or two to read about the yankees/baseball? Want to appreciate the game more. Thanks.

I think the difference in the race this year will be which teams young players that are called up at mid-season (make no mistake, the Yankees and Red Sox will look from within to fix their problems) make contributions.

One thing folks forget are the ban on greenies in the game. That hurts older players as much as any scheduling issues. You have to have younger players available later in the year when you are an older team. The Yankees and Red Sox are older teams sprinkled with youth. They will need help to finish the season.

Both the Yankees and Red Sox have imperfect rosters. They also have some very interesting options in the minor leagues.

I believe the team that gets the biggest boost from their younger players will have the edge this year.

I’m not talking about the young guys currently on the roster.

I’m talking about guys like Moss, Masterson, Hansen, Cox, McCutcheon, Gardner, etc. IMO, some of these guys are going to play a role in the race.

It may be for a game, a week or a month. But, you are going to see contributions from younger players down the stretch this year.

  222. rb15

Doreen – got it. All good points. I guess just in my gut, I don’t think the picture’s as bad as the press it got, and I don’t think there’s a lot of opportunity for a girl in Miley Cyrus’ fan base age range (10 years old) to see it – and if she does have the know-how and opportunity to see it, she’s probably already seen a lot worse. Miley’s a role model, but she’s not their only role model – these girls follow Britney, Paris, Lohan, Winehouse, etc, also. I think maybe a lot of the shock and outrage (not yours personally, but the collective uproar in general) is at least in part parents realizing that kids see stuff like this all the time, and not so much parents being upset because their kids don’t ever see stuff like this.

But all that said, you sound like a good parent – we could probably use more like you.

Buckholz has been consistent, but I still don’t see him as spectacular. I think he’s a solid back of the rotation starter, maybe a 3. What surprises me most about Boston so far is Lester – he’s just been horrible, and that’s putting a serious cramp in their style. But Sean Casey’s been another surprise – he’s been very good for them. I heard Lowell’s coming back tonight, so Youk will move back to first, but Casey held it together for them.

  223. Jason

Ray – perhaps we can carry this into the Posada thread, but the Yanks and Sox both had the opportunity for Santana. both turned it down because both are building teams for the long term (dare I say in the way the Patriots do). They will now hopefully not pay for past performance, but will grow through the draft, international markets, select free agent singings etc. There will be a lot of battle and debate going forward:
    Joba/Hughes vs Bucholz Lester
    Ellsbury/Pedroia vs. Cano/Jackson/Tabata
One difference for this season is the Yankees seem to have some internal bullpen options. The Red Sox will need to rely on Delcarmen coming around, Masterson to the pen, or Hansen for a big turnaround.

    If Bucholz is a 3, Hughes is a 4.

Damon and Matsui have shown that they need to be in the lineup every day. Melky and Abreu have also shown that.

Giambi has shown signs of turning around, but has yet to hit the ball the other way.

Shelley Duncan and Morgan Ensberg are wastes of roster spots. Shelley may be worth using if we have a few hurt players or need him to play 1st, but Alberto Gonzalez has proved himself to be a defensive wizard and a decent offensive player.

I’d rather have him playing all around the infield than have Shelley or Giambi in there.

Once Alex gets healthy, this will all be solved. But for now, we need to go with this:

    Damon LF
    Jeter SS
    Abreu RF
    Matsui DH
    Cano 2B
    Duncan/Giambi/Ensberg 1B
    Cabrera CF
    Molina C
    Gonzalez 3B

Stacy, I also recommend “Dynasty”…I am not a big fan of the author, but this book gives a “Boys of Summer” perspective/insight of those great Yankee Teams during the 1949-1964 Dynasty era (9 World Series Championships and 14 Pennants in 16 years)……..some of those Yankee Teams did not always have the best talent, but great, clutch, competitors/grinders who played selflessly and with pride under pressure, like Tom Heinrich, Hank Bauer, Allie Reynolds, Vic Raschi, Joe D, Billy Martin, Scooter, Yogi, Whitey, etc., and the genius of Casey Stengal beat teams that were sometimes favored (Brooklyn, Boston, Cleveland, etc).

  229. Mark Alan

    Stacy…

You have to read Forging Genius: The Making of Casey Stengel, by Seven Goldman.

Also, if you read Taiwanese and can get you hands on it, read Pete Abraham’s Chien-Ming Wang tome.
