Rasner added to rotation

Brian Cashman says the Yankees will start Darrell Rasner on Sunday against Seattle.

Rasner is 4-0 for Scranton and certainly deserves a shot.

Meanwhile, Phil Hughes said his mysterious injury didn’t become a problem until today.

Good luck Rasner – hope you’re as good as your AAA starts.

  2. crazyyankeefan April 30th, 2008 at 10:47 pm

Now his injury does sound very weird to me. Wonder if it’s actually true.

  3. Frank (South Beach) April 30th, 2008 at 10:49 pm

At this rate might as well put Cano on the DL as well to to clear his head…lol

  4. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 April 30th, 2008 at 10:49 pm

I just saw Rasner pitch on Sunday. In fact, I have a picture where it looks like he’s looking right at me!

He pitched very well–one run over six–though he struggled with command on a couple of the batters.

  5. S.A.-I still believe in ya Phil and I would trade Farnsworth for a pack of gum April 30th, 2008 at 10:49 pm

    Good luck Rasner

This Phil Hughes injury seems like a case for Unsolved Mysteries. Who knows what is really going on.

The blog should be..um..interesting tomorrow with Kennedy pitching.

i am going to beat those sons of b-tches sunday

  7. frits April 30th, 2008 at 10:51 pm

that’s not entirely the case. hughes said in his interview that he felt it in chicago, i believe, and that he mentioned it to the trainers after his start yesterday.

obviously its all a bunch of BS though.

not like i care; they are more than welcome to use belichick-esque evasion tactics if they think it gives them an advantage, real or imagined.

as girardi said, “do you want me to tell you when we’re hitting and running, too?”

  8. ian kennedy April 30th, 2008 at 10:52 pm

    Dawwel,

Can you pitch tomowwow instead? I’m scawed ah Tigahs.

  9. jennifer- I got your back Girardi April 30th, 2008 at 10:52 pm

I really believe he is hurt. They know how the NY media is, Phil was put in a worse situation tonight being grilled on when he felt it, when he told them about it, etc. Instead of just saying we are sending him down to Tampa to get straighten out. There would be nothing wrong with it, the fans wouldn’t see anything wrong with it. All that makes me believe he is in fact hurt.

My picture of Rasner looking at me even though he wasn’t looking at me.

  11. JJ April 30th, 2008 at 10:53 pm

Why is it that Torre leaves and the yankees become secretive about injuries? Girardi is acting like the Jets or Pats do.

  12. Frank Discussion April 30th, 2008 at 10:53 pm

I don’t really care what the reason if for Hughes going on the DL, if it gives him some time to get his act together then I’m all for it.

  13. Brandon (supporting the new movement "Alex being Alex") April 30th, 2008 at 10:54 pm

com’on Hawks don’t go out like this :(

  14. Jane April 30th, 2008 at 10:54 pm

I’m pondering about this mysterious injury.

Let’s pretend that they really are faking it, what’s the advantage of doing that over just outrighting him to AAA? Phil would still know he really isn’t injured and that this is really just a roundabout way of demoting him. Waldman mentioned something about him not even throwing until the pain is gone, so it’s not like they can do some work on the side.

I know Joe has been less that forthright about things but I think there’s reason to really believe Phil is actually hurt.

  15. frits April 30th, 2008 at 10:55 pm

wow, rasner has a sub 1 ERA and a WHIP to match it. his K/9 rate is high too. i’ll settle for 6 IP, 3 ER. that’s all we need.

  16. Smitty April 30th, 2008 at 10:56 pm

Why is Pete so down on Girardi? It’s almost like he has an agenda…

  17. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 April 30th, 2008 at 10:57 pm

Jane: I have to imagine he’s hurting at least a little bit. It might be a stretch to have him on the DL, but lying about whether or not he’s hurt can incur some stiff penalties.

  18. Brandon (supporting the new movement "Alex being Alex") April 30th, 2008 at 10:58 pm

Smitty it’s obvious Girardi was lieing, like I said I don’t care because Phil needs to look at “video”

  19. Dave April 30th, 2008 at 10:59 pm

You can’t go around telling the NY media crap and not expect them to call you out on it.

  20. murphydog April 30th, 2008 at 11:00 pm

“Why is Pete so down on Girardi? It’s almost like he has an agenda…”

He does have an agenda… getting the truth out of the manager.

  21. Kevin April 30th, 2008 at 11:00 pm

If Hughes said he was hurt heading into the game yesterday, but did not tell anyone which I get the impression that he was that alone is basis for punishment from the club in my opinion.

  22. Buddy Biancalana April 30th, 2008 at 11:00 pm

    Rebecca-

Uh Sorry, he’s looking at me!!!

  23. Don Vito A. Bellamo April 30th, 2008 at 11:01 pm

oh…now Phil is a liar too ?…is Santa for real ?

  24. Arliss April 30th, 2008 at 11:02 pm

So who is lying now? Girardi, Hughes, Girardi and Hughes, Finkel, Einhorne, which is it?

  25. yankee lover April 30th, 2008 at 11:02 pm

It seems like every pitcher the Yankees get either from the minors or in trades comes here and forgets how to pitch or has release or arm slot issues. Farnsworth, Contraras, Weaver, Farnsworth, Loiza, Hitchcock, Johnson, Brown, Igawa and now Hughes. All had reasonable success BEFORE putting the pinstripes on, whats going on?

  26. CB April 30th, 2008 at 11:03 pm

Big moment in pinstripes for Rasner.

He’s out of options. That’s why the team has been waiting to call him up.

If Rasner doesn’t throw well up in the big leagues then that’s a big problem.

The yankees can’t send him down to the minors unless he clears waivers.

No way Rasner will clear waivers even if he gets bombed in the majors.

Some other team desperate for pitching will take a flyer on him.

I hope he pitches well up here whether as a starter or long man.

This is probably his last chance with the yankees.

  27. Arliss April 30th, 2008 at 11:04 pm

Frits – 6 innings and 3 runs would likely mean 9 innings and 4 runs…..which would probably mean we fall short against the Great Carlos Seeelva who works with Sterling and Waldman on his off days.

  28. Jane April 30th, 2008 at 11:04 pm

Well, you can’t put someone on the DL without a doctor actually certifying that there’s something physically wrong with them. But that easy to do.

My point is that people are saying that this DL move is more so that Phil doesn’t have to be technically demoted. Is it just semantics? If the reason was (to quote Pete) this “allows Hughes to chill out and get some work in without being demoted” wouldn’t Phil still know he’s not really hurt and is IN FACT being pulled out of the rotation and is being demoted.

  29. S.A.-I still believe in ya Phil and I would trade Farnsworth for a pack of gum April 30th, 2008 at 11:04 pm

Do we need to bring in a lie detector? Maybe they all should go on that Moment of truth show on FOX.

The truth is probably somewhere in the middle.

    Damn Hawks. :(
What a crappy sports week so far

  30. Steph April 30th, 2008 at 11:05 pm

Will they add Rasner on Sunday then and, in the meantime, call up a reliever for the taxed pen until he’s added? Seems like they’re getting daily shipments from Scranton.

  31. RayBlay April 30th, 2008 at 11:05 pm

Are the two extra days between starts going to affect him?

  32. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 April 30th, 2008 at 11:06 pm

I’m hoping the best for Rasner. Yankees have a knack in finding help where they least expect it–Aaron Small, David Justice, Joba Chamberlain, etc–though 3 ER in 6 doesn’t inspire huge helpings of confidence with our offensive woes

  33. Rak April 30th, 2008 at 11:06 pm

Thanks for the Rasner pic, Rebecca! Pretty cool!

  34. Jane April 30th, 2008 at 11:07 pm

CB – Apparently it’s easy to manufacture injuries. Can we predict that Rasner will incur some mysterious injury once they are done with Rasner?

  35. Dee April 30th, 2008 at 11:07 pm

CB, thanks for the info on Rasner’s status. That’s good, hope it’ll give him extra incentive to pitch well. It’s go big or go home for him.

This whole lie saga, I don’t even care anymore. If he’s hurt, it’s good he’ll get treatment while getting to clear his head as a bonus. If he’s not hurt, it’s nice to see Cash & co. not giving up on him just yet. It’s nice to protect your own.

  36. Jax April 30th, 2008 at 11:08 pm

Ha Red Sox fans saying “we don’t care about the Celtics.”

  37. Jeff NJ April 30th, 2008 at 11:08 pm

Interesting point CB that Rasner is out of options. That’s ok, he’s more fitting than Ohlendorf for long relief. he should stick around.

  39. CB April 30th, 2008 at 11:10 pm

“My point is that people are saying that this DL move is more so that Phil doesn’t have to be technically demoted. Is it just semantics?”

It’s not just semantics. I think they want him to stay in NY so that he can keep working with Dave Eiland – who has been his pitching coach since AA.

Eiland knows him as well as anyone.

If he was sent down to AAA he’s be separated from all of the yankees big league coaching staff.

Also, he might go down to Tampa for a while to work with Nardi.

This gives them more flexibility and keeps him working with the people who know him.

  40. Flam April 30th, 2008 at 11:11 pm

  43. Dee April 30th, 2008 at 11:12 pm

    Jane,

If I was Hughes, I think I would feel much better knowing that my bosses are bending over backward to keep me up in the big league so I can work with my familiar pitching coach and keep my reputation instead of sending me down like yesterday’s trash.

  44. TKinDC April 30th, 2008 at 11:13 pm

I guess that Cashman’s phone is going to be ringing a lot more often this year as reporters contact him every time there is any question with the team and no one puts any stock into what Joe G. says.

I am all for tactical advantages, but withholding all kinds of information is useless. It is actually pretty pathetic.

  45. Buddy Biancalana April 30th, 2008 at 11:14 pm

    Flam vs Frits Part Deux

  46. Jax April 30th, 2008 at 11:14 pm

“This gives them more flexibility and keeps him working with the people who know him.”

Plus there won’t be any cameras and NY media around to see that he’s not really hurt because he will be throwing a baseball.

  47. CB April 30th, 2008 at 11:15 pm

“wow, rasner has a sub 1 ERA and a WHIP to match it. his K/9 rate is high too.”

Kei Igawa has probably been one of the top 10 pitchers in all of the International league this year if you look at his statistics. His ERA, K/9, WHIP, even his BB/ 9 are outstanding.

Don’t get your expectations set too high. Rasner is not even close to as good as his numbers look in AAA.

Let’s hope he’s serviceable as a major leaguer. That would be great.

  48. Patrick Bateman April 30th, 2008 at 11:18 pm

When can we put Cashman on the 60 day DL for a fake injury?

  49. S.A.-I still believe in ya Phil and I would trade Farnsworth for a pack of gum April 30th, 2008 at 11:18 pm

I hope the Yankees bats start to do something soon.

  50. Jane April 30th, 2008 at 11:19 pm

Dee/CB – Ok. I didn’t consider that scenario. I guess I’m too naive and gullible. I guess Phil can have both a physical and mental rest from the game and also work stuff on the side when this mysterious “pain” disappears.

I hope Phil snaps out of this funk. It’ll break my heart to see him have another meltdown on the mound.

  51. Eric April 30th, 2008 at 11:19 pm

Eventually the media is going to really turn on Girardi unless he is either honest about his team or just says he doesn’t want to give too much away by talking about it. His Isiah-esque disdain for the media will come back to bite him in NY. If he’s getting snappy before game 30, how’s he going to be in October??

  52. Brandon (supporting the new movement "Alex being Alex") April 30th, 2008 at 11:21 pm

oh Celtics there will be a game 7, you watch :)

Indeed Brandon. I’m not sure how much of that is hype that he was getting but it defenitely speaks to the point of velocity.

  55. Brandon (supporting the new movement "Alex being Alex") April 30th, 2008 at 11:23 pm

“I hope Phil snaps out of this funk. It’ll break my heart to see him have another meltdown on the mound.”

yes we all hope that Phil snaps some footage …cough.. out of this.

  56. Dee April 30th, 2008 at 11:24 pm

Jane, agree. I wish him well too and haven’t given up on him. The possible “lie” aside, I like how the Yankees are dealing with this by giving him a chance to work things out up here.

  57. Nick in SF April 30th, 2008 at 11:24 pm

frits and flam? is that the legendary matchup?

    I still can’t keep track.

  58. Doug April 30th, 2008 at 11:25 pm

I wouldn’t put Bruney on the 60 Day DL just yet. If he hasn’t shown improvement in his foot by June 1,then 60 Day DL him. That way he may can resurface late August or September.

  59. Betsy April 30th, 2008 at 11:27 pm

CB, you actually think Phil isn’t hurt? If that’s the case, don’t you feel that it is disgraceful for the Yankees to ask their 21 year old prize pitcher to lie? Making Phil lie to the media is a ***** way to ease the burden on the kid; now he’s going to be peppered with questions and if he’s lying, how is he to remember what he’s said ? The truth is always so much easier. They should have just sent him down; oh wait – the Yankees would be embarrassed to send Phil down so they, in their paranoic state, engage in very clever subterfuge. I’m sickened by this. Also, since Eiland is the one (with Nardi) who forced Phil to change his mechanics, I have no faith in him. If he cared about Phil’s future, he would encourage the kid to go with his natural delivery.

Ok, rant aside – I actually do think Phil is hurt and I have lost most of my respect for him. I do not admire athletes that try to act macho by playing through injuries, esp., after this particular athlete suffered through his most frustrating season ever last year due to two bad injuries.

Phil is injury prone, let’s face it – I have no faith that he can keep himself on the mound in one piece.

  60. JK April 30th, 2008 at 11:28 pm

Why is the secrecy with the Yankees so surprising?

The FO was completely pissed with Torre revealing the Joba rules last year and using the media to put pressure on the front office to get it changed.

No Yankee has a weekly spot on NY talk radio and they shut down Joba’s weekly radio spot with Kay before it even got started this year.

It’s impossible to get specific injury infomation out of the Yankees on minor leagers

Cashman wanted to shutdown Hughes blog

Hank after Girardi hire = he’s a company man

This is not news folks! The Yankees want information on lock down and Torre was a constant media leak.

  61. Abepeter April 30th, 2008 at 11:30 pm

I think Rasner will do well. Last year according to mlb.com in his first five starts, he faced Eric Bedard, Joe Blanton, Fausto Carmona and Washburn twice. The Yankees were 3-2 in those starts, athough he was only 1-2 thanks to Torre yanking him early. His first outing (against Bedard) was his worst, 5er in 4.1. After that he gave up 0er, 1er, 0er and 3er. His overall era was 3.28. The Yankees weren’t winning much so that was pretty good.

In his sixth start he got hurt after two guys reached base. Good ole Meyers came in and let those runs in and got bombed. Rasner’s era went up to 4.01 and he got his third loss.

As SJ44 and others have pointed out, this year in the minors he learned a cutter and his velocity is up to 88-91. (That’s about what Hughes was doing this year). He can throw all four pitches for strikes.

I think people remember all the injuries and bad performances early last year and just sort of lump Rasner in with Karstens, Clippard, Desalvo, Igawa, Wright, etc. But he was really much better than those guys last year and it seems he is even better now.

  62. Nick in SF April 30th, 2008 at 11:30 pm

    media lockdown
    just more disinformation?
    say it ain’t so, Joe!

  63. Bob April 30th, 2008 at 11:30 pm

I don’t understand why all of you are so worried about Hughes and the rotation.

Who cares about starters? They’re a dime a dozen.

We got Joba as our set-up man! We’ll be fine!

  64. dan l April 30th, 2008 at 11:31 pm

Hopefully Rasner does well but I think they should bring up Daniel McCutchen instead as he has the stuff to be a very solid MLB pitcher where as Rasner has fringe stuff at best.

  65. Bob April 30th, 2008 at 11:32 pm

Won’t Hughes end up having to go down to the minors for at least a few rehab starts anyway if he is truly injured?

Don’t understand what all the cloak and dagger stuff accomplishes.

  66. pat April 30th, 2008 at 11:33 pm

The Yankees require a flow chart this year. Whose 40 man roster spot is Rasner going to take? Did Moeller take Henn’s? I’m so confused!

  67. CB April 30th, 2008 at 11:33 pm

“Indeed Brandon. I’m not sure how much of that is hype that he was getting but it defenitely speaks to the point of velocity.”

What they’re confusing in the snippets in that post is – where does a pitcher’s velocity sit versus what his his maximum peak velocity.

This happens all the time with pitchers in the minors.

For example – go back and look up scouting reports about Buchholz from the minors. I saw one report after another saying he throws up to 97mph.

I’ve never seen Buccholz consistently throw at that velocity. I don’t doubt that he could perhaps muscle a pitch up at that velocity once in a blue moon.

But that’s not where Bucchholz sits – he’s 91-94. That’s where he throws, but what was written was 97.

Tim Lincecum can throw 98,99. But if you watch one of his games he’ll rarely if ever hit that speed. He sits 94-96.

Here what Keith Law had to say about Phil’s velocity – and Law saw him pitch himself in the minors:

Kevin (The DISTRICT of): KLAW, settle this ridiculous Phil Hughes velocity debate. What’s the real story? Did he really throw in the mid 90s in the minors?

SportsNation Keith Law: (1:04 PM ET ) Yes, that’s definitely the stupid Internet story of the week. Hughes was 90-94 coming up through the minors – saw it with my own eyes, more than once – and he’s pitching in the lower end of that range right now. It’s a controversy borne of the cockeyed optimism of fans who latch on to a pitcher’s highest-ever reported velocity and then act shocked – SHOCKED! – when he doesn’t actually throw that hard.

Hughes was 90-94 – that’s exactly where he’s been this year.

  68. Brandon (supporting the new movement "Alex being Alex") April 30th, 2008 at 11:34 pm

Rob NY and I know CB is going to be pissed at me for beating this so much, you notice how his velocity reports lessened around 06′ he was in Trenton the only change he had was in pitching coach…Dave Eiland…I’m not blaming him but there may be something he messed with, because anyone reading those quotes

His 92-96 mph fastball has good movement to go along with outstanding location – From Baseball Prospectus’ Top 10 Yankees Prospect, Jan 2007

Hughes, still months short of his 20th birthday, brings a fastball that sits between 93-95 MPH, topping out at 97 MPH with command that is far beyond his years – Frankie Piliere – Scout.com

In the past he has always been able to blow guys away with his fastball, and now he’s learning to pitch more,”

Hughes’ fastball is in the mid-90s – Newsday Trenton manager Bill Masse

displayed his lethal arsenal of pitches ranging from a mid-90s fastball – June 19 2006 Baseball Digest Daily

“I didn’t know who he was,” Rodriguez said. “I thought he was going to throw about 88 [mph], and he came at me with 95.” – Alex Rodriguez ST 06′

He’s unbelievable. It’s effortless the way the ball comes out of his hand at 95-96 – Jorge Posada ST 06′

when did it, where, and how did Dave Eiland change this, that is the first thing that needs to be addressed

  69. Bob April 30th, 2008 at 11:35 pm

I think that’s my answer. It was frits vs. flam, and flam was the guy who told the tall tale about Joba! Right?

    Congrats, Rebecca.

  82. GreenBeret7 April 30th, 2008 at 11:42 pm

Thank you, Rebecca. I’ve been back and forth to Tampa for treatments. Other times raising Hell on ESPN. Everything’s back to normal.

  83. Buddy Biancalana April 30th, 2008 at 11:42 pm

    GB7-

It’s been months, how have you been?

  84. Brandon (supporting the new movement "Alex being Alex") April 30th, 2008 at 11:43 pm

“Brandon I’m with you. I saw it in person when he was at AA and that summer made it for me, I was a Hughes groupie. Something is different and I think Nardi is the guy to fix it.”

Rob I’m just hoping they are addressing it, because it’s been 2 yrs., this can’t be ignored any longer.

  85. Buddy Biancalana April 30th, 2008 at 11:43 pm

    Nick-

    You are correct!

  86. frits April 30th, 2008 at 11:43 pm

nick in SF – that is correct. the battle ended abruptly when i produced photos of joba that i took in penn station, since i was actually there, and flam took off like speedy gonzales. it was a good time had by all.

  87. GreenBeret7 April 30th, 2008 at 11:44 pm

Thank you for the welcome back, also, Pat. Just wanted to see some of the Hughes Conspiracy posts. The name Hughes hasn’t been involved in such things since Howard was being investigated 40 years ago.

  88. ADave April 30th, 2008 at 11:45 pm

For those who keep harping on the fact its only April. I’ll state the obvious and say that a game in April is worth just as much as a game in September.

This offense needs to help out the pitching right now. Let’s get those bats going fellas. This is not what the “best offense” in baseball is supposed to be doing.

I feel like Mariano’s brilliant season is being swept under the rug with all the injuries and losses.

  89. GreenBeret7 April 30th, 2008 at 11:45 pm

Doing better, Buddy, but, have a ways to go. Thanks for asking. How are things with you.

  90. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 April 30th, 2008 at 11:46 pm

    Bob–

Rebecca, did you really pass it? Yes, scored 37/50 on the final, which gives me a 79.5 average over all. Considering I stopped reading after Spring Break, I consider it an accomplishment.

Who told you you passed it? The grade was posted on http://www.blackboard.syr.edu as with the rest of my grades for the course.

When did you find out you passed it? About ten minutes ago.

Did somebody just tell you to say you passed it to protect your mental well being? Not unless they lied about the grade which is possible, I mean, the professor really likes my hats.

GB: I hope the treatments are going well, whatever they’re for.

Glad we could clear that up. Last night I mistakedly accused fleas of being the tall-tale-teller when it was flam.

fleas, if you’re out there, I apologize. You’re a clown in your own unique way.

“I’m not blaming him but there may be something he messed with, because anyone reading those quotes”

    Brandon,

You’re killing me. I tried responding to this twice but my comment is getting caught in the filter for some reason.

Those snippets are confusing where a pitcher sits in terms of velocity and his peak velocity.

Go back and look at scouting reports of Buchholz – they all say he throws up to 97. Buccholz may be able to touch 97 but he sits 91-94.

  95. GreenBeret7 April 30th, 2008 at 11:49 pm

Getting treatments for the last few months, Brandon. Thanks for the greeting. It’s been a bit of a struggle, but, getting along pretty well.

  96. CB April 30th, 2008 at 11:50 pm

Here is what Keith Law had to say about Hughes supposed drop in velocity.

And Law has actually seen Hughes personally.

Hughes velocity is fine. His movement is not because he’s not trusting his stuff.

JB Cox is pitching great at Trenton he is on his way back..

Man the yankee pen looks good it is Kennedy, hughes, and the bats that are killing them.. Cano is a 315 hitter, he is hitting 155………

Giambi is hitting 165 and cannot hit the ball to the left side of the infield EVER…

Molina is starting to hit like Molina….I bet Moeller catch’s Thursday..

This is clearly NOT what Girardi was expecting. He’s over his head. He may have appeared ready for New York, but he’s not. At this rate Donnie will get his chance sooner than one thinks.

This isn’t the bunch of kids he had in Florida. This is a team of mostly veterans in a high pressure environment. Girardi better start managing like he knows what he’s doing or he’s sunk.

This team needs to start playing some good fundamental ball. I ask you…what have they been missing, it’s obvious…Timely hitting, defense and solid pitching. I know Girardi can’t go out and play for these guys, but he should be creating an environment where they can excel. I’m not seeing that.

  103. Betsy April 30th, 2008 at 11:55 pm

Rob in NY, I admit I don’t trust Nardi and Eiland one bit. They are the ones that tinkered, for no reason whatsoever, with Phil’s delivery. There was absolutely nothing wrong with it.. Now, with this new delivery that Phil is clearly not comfortable with, he doesn’t throw as hard and he has pretty poor control. The fact that these geniuses don’t get that this 21 year old needs to go back to what made him the #1 pitching prospect in baseball is criminal.

  104. Brandon (supporting the new movement "Alex being Alex") April 30th, 2008 at 11:57 pm

OK..Not really a pretty head, but, thank you very much. I’m not really that sane. I’m a Yankee fan, but, found out that there’s no reason for me to trash players that on their bad days are better than my best that I could dream up. Besides, as important as baseball is to me, and as bad as the games get, things can always be worse in life.

Dr. Cox. There can be only one.

  120. whoa May 1st, 2008 at 12:33 am

  121. Dr. Cox May 1st, 2008 at 12:34 am

    Mr. Exceptional:

I am a Yankees fan. But I am also a BASEBALL fan. I respect all teams. You can absolutely have another team that, not neccesarily root for, but that you like. suck on that for a little.

  122. pat May 1st, 2008 at 12:35 am

    From Yankee blog on Newsday.com

…. not to scare you all with another potential injury, but Johnny Damon had a huge wrap around his upper left leg after the game. I asked him what was wrong, and he said he tweaked his left groin during the day game in Cleveland. I asked if he’s OK, and he said: “I’ve got to be. We’ve got too many guys out.”

  123. Buddy Biancalana May 1st, 2008 at 12:35 am

I’m a closet Padres fan mostly b/c of Graig Nettles being traded to them. The Goose was fun to watch as well.

  124. Amanda from La. May 1st, 2008 at 12:39 am

what the heck? I haven’t checked my internet in a while and I come back to this. Maybe a break will help him out some, hope it isn’t too bad.

  125. S.A.-I still believe in ya Phil and I would trade Farnsworth for a pack of gum May 1st, 2008 at 12:41 am

    Now something with Damon? sigh

  126. Betsy May 1st, 2008 at 12:43 am

    The injury is real:

    http://newyork.yankees.mlb.com.....8;c_id=nyy

Thanks to Phil’s stupidity in trying to pitch through it, he’s going to cost himself a couple of months at least. He won’t be able to work on his mechanics and he won’t be able to get a fix on any of his other issues – what a complete waste. He really needs to spend the rest of the season in AAA even after he recovers.

  127. x23 May 1st, 2008 at 12:45 am

The yankees.com story on Hughes seems legit. Looks like hes really injured.

Ranser blows though!!! Didn’t the yanks DFA him last year and somehow got him back??? I rather give Horne or Sanchez a chance(if/when they’re healthy)

  128. S.A.-I still believe in ya Phil and I would trade Farnsworth for a pack of gum May 1st, 2008 at 12:47 am

Spend the rest of the season in AAA?
    um..Let’s just see what happens.

  129. Betsy May 1st, 2008 at 12:49 am

Phil simply can not stay on the mound – he’s useless to the Yankees if he can’t do that. At this point, I’m not going to count on anything from him in the future.

  130. Buddy Biancalana May 1st, 2008 at 12:49 am

  132. Betsy May 1st, 2008 at 12:53 am

Here are some quotes -Phil said that he felt something during/after his outing in Chicago. I’m completely disillusioned with him at this point:

Yankees manager Joe Girardi said that he watched game tape of Hughes’ start after learning of the injury and spotted a point in the fourth inning where Hughes sat on the bench, let out a deep breath and appeared to wince. Girardi said that he did not believe Hughes’ performance had been affected since the club’s radar gun had him touching 94 mph on Tuesday.

“Physically, he’s looked great to me, so I was shocked when I heard it from the trainers,” Girardi said.

Cashman said that the Yankees expect Hughes’ recovery process to take more than 15 days, with a Minor League rehabilitation assignment necessary at some point.

As a point of comparison, Yankees outfielder Bobby Abreu suffered an oblique strain in Spring Training last year and did not come out of an offensive funk until June, and the team wants to be arguably even more careful with Hughes, whom they view as a prized prospect.

“You’ve got to make sure with the torque he has and the twisting he does, that he doesn’t feel it at all,” Girardi said.

  133. Buddy Biancalana May 1st, 2008 at 12:53 am

    Betsy-

I understand your disappointment but staying in AAA sounds nuts.

  134. Betsy May 1st, 2008 at 12:56 am

Buddy, Phil is going to take a month or two to recover and then he’s going to have to get himself in pitching shape. After he’s in pitching shape, he’s got to fix his problems….that’s going to take quite awhile. I don’t see how he’s going to be up here much earlier than September, if that. He’s not a major leaguer at this point, now granted you are catching me on a night where I am sooooo angry at him.

  135. Brandon (supporting the new movement "Alex being Alex") May 1st, 2008 at 12:57 am

it’s on yankees.com Buddy  and again too many posters are falling for it ..it’s clear what’s going on is the Gomez article picked up steam the last 2 days and the Yankee FO are going to check if it has any validity too it.

That’s what it better be because no way is Hughes hurt, the kid at 5 PM had a smile on his face going in the lockerroom via Micheal Kay

  136. Buddy Biancalana May 1st, 2008 at 1:00 am

Yeah, I can understand 3 weeks including rehab, but not a matter of months.

  137. Nick in SF May 1st, 2008 at 1:01 am

The Yanks have been too easy on Phil. Time to take the kid gloves off. Take away Phil’s puppy and give it to Hank. Phil has 3 weeks to heal and completely turn his performance around or the puppy… well, let’s not go there yet.

  138. YankeesTech May 1st, 2008 at 1:01 am

  139. S.A.-I still believe in ya Phil and I would trade Farnsworth for a pack of gum May 1st, 2008 at 1:02 am

so because he felt something strange and didn’t tell anyone you are now disillusioned with the kid? ok

He said the injury feels like a “dull pinch.”- I dunno, maybe he didn’t think it was anything significant.

I don’t even really believe that there is even an injury.
    This whole thing is weird.

Let’s just see what happens and remember this is a 21 year old guy.

  140. Buddy Biancalana May 1st, 2008 at 1:02 am

I read the yankees.com article but saw no mention of an extended amount of time. The kid will be alright, nothing like a little adversity is good for the soul.

  141. Clover44 May 1st, 2008 at 1:11 am

Way to many of you Chicken Little’s out there. It may look like the sky is falling but things are going to be just fine. The lineup has looked awful but things will change. Guys are gonna start picking it up and hitting.

I don’t mind Hughes getting some coaching on the side for a couple of weeks from Dave Eiland, that’s what he’s there for… Plus, the advantage of this is that he won’t lose confidence by going down to the minors and potentially not doing that great down there, then becoming a psychological mess. AND he doesn’t use up innings as part of his mandatory innings limit. Listen, there are advantages and disadvantages to Hughes getting demoted to AAA and working out kinks there. I just happen to feel that the disadvantages outweigh the advantages.

Also, if you don’t think that the Yankees are eventually going to trade for a starting pitcher with some experience and MLB credibility you’re absolutely kidding yourselves. It’s going to happen, just a matter of when. In the meantime, I honestly think that the pitching is going to work itself out.

Lastly, I know many debate the merits the psychological aspect of big league players. Some think guys are basically just robots and are going to perform regardless of score and situation. I do not. I think that a lot of the time, when pitchers either have a lead or just kind of have that instinctive feeling that the lineup is going to pick them up, get them some runs and keep them in the game, even if they make a few mistakes, they gain more confidence and pitch better. Now, I know the statistical folks would argue and say that argument is flawed and not based on anything quantifiable. They’re right. But for anyone that watches these games and for anyone that’s ever played, you just know that it affects these guys. Once the team starts scoring more earlier and consistently picking up their offense during games (which is exactly what they did last year) you will start to see guys like Pettitte and (hopefully) Kennedy come along and start getting big W’s.

    Hope springs eternal GO BOMBERS!!!!

  142. Mike May 1st, 2008 at 1:23 am

mysterious injury? or yankee plot to straighten the kid out without sending him to AAA and looking stupid?

  143. Brandon (supporting the new movement "Alex being Alex") May 1st, 2008 at 1:24 am

    I agree it’s a genius injury :)

  144. CBR May 1st, 2008 at 1:42 am

Amazing! I dropped Hughes from my fantasy team before this story broke.

  145. rackem May 1st, 2008 at 1:51 am

CBR I’m sure he wasn’t helping your team out much these last few starts. Bannister messed my team up tonight =/

  146. Girardi on the DL May 1st, 2008 at 2:13 am

With how Girardi has been less than forthcoming with truthful information, I find it hard to believe anything he says now.

He has been caught in lies. I think it could be that Hughes’ injury is yet another lie.

Hughes had nothing wrong according to Girardi before the game, then poof, he is on the DL. Is this another injury like Betemit’s pink eye? Is this the minor injury that Posada has?

You can’t believe anything the Yankee manager is selling these days.

The MLB article by Bryan Hoch is Yankee media spin. It doesn’t mesh with what Girardi said in his post game interview. It doesn’t mesh with what Hughes said. I think Girardi told Hughes to lie and go on the DL.

Girardi is losing it. He hasn’t been doing a great job with all the micro managing he trying, he is lying to be press, he is lying to us fans, he gets petulant with the press asking him questions.

Seeing him everyday now, I can see why he lost his first manager gig. It won’t be long till he is an ex-Yankee manager if he keeps this crap up.

  147. bru May 1st, 2008 at 7:11 am

if it is true that phil changed his delivery for whatever reason then he,nardi, eiland should be smart enough to take that into consideration and fix it.it will take between 1-3 years to find out if hughes is the real deal.look at king felix for seattle and the list goes on and on.the yankees have an old team with terrible defense and need to get younger.they need an ace.if they were strong 1-3 with starting pitching and a decent 4th man then they could let hughes work out his issues with a lot less pressure but they just threw him in and said we need you to win and he folded.all they need is an ace, bump wang to numer 2,pettitte to 3,mussina to 4 and hughes at 5 but mussina and the kids are killing them.i just hope phil gets his confidence back it could be a career killer.

  148. Betsy May 1st, 2008 at 8:18 am

Also, if the Yankees are lying, it’s reprehensible to get a 21 year old kid involved. I don’t get why they couldn’t just send him down……unless it’s because they think they’d look bad. That’s pretty paranoid.
