Soriano has been awful. Ortiz. Howard. Cano until today. The list goes on. Giambi has been bad, but his stats are actually better them before today. Sure, they are much better bets than him to do great rest of the way, my point is only that it is early. Giambi could still end up serviceable. He's not going to be great, but he is one week-long hot streak away from having decent stats. Oakland is above .500 with Thomas AND Cust getting regular at bats (also a week ago both were as bad as Giambi).

A non-strict platoon with Duncan might be serviceble, offensively (I'd bat Duncan against some hard throwing righties as well).

man, I don't envy Phil at all, but at least he's not dwelling on the negative. It sucks, though, that he's going to be away from the team for practically this whole 4 weeks, whatwith leaving the dugout after the 3rd inning. The camraderie of the clubhouse is what players often miss the most when they retire and it seems Phil doesn't have that anymore. Poor kid.

It doesn't appear that they'll rely on Japanese lefty Kei Igawa to bail them out; they've invested $46 million in him ($26 million posting fee, plus five-year, $20 million contract), but he's at Triple A Scranton.

Nor do you hear mention of the rehabbing Carl Pavano, who told this reporter he feels he can pitch after the All-Star break, almost a year after Tommy John surgery.

not this s... again :x

Did anyone watch the Joe Girardi show? Joe said Carl Pavano could be back in the lineup by August??!!

I hope he was just theorizing b/c that's what Pavano's rehab timeline is, or maybe they are planning for him to join the PB when Joba moves to the rotation by August. Anyway I thought that August comment was unexpected.
