Chien-Ming Wang is Michael Jordan in Taiwan. Check out these Nike Commericials:

Wang looks like a tough guy in this one as he pitches.

Then there’s this one, which includes photos of when he was a kid.

If he keeps pitching the way he’s pitching, there will be some U.S. commericials pretty soon.

(Attention Nike, I take an 11 if you want to send me free sneakers. Just don’t tell the paper)

WOw – great ads…now if only I understood Taiwanese!

  2. Steve May 5th, 2008 at 11:20 am

I love me some Wang. Wait, that sounds wrong.

  3. Keith May 5th, 2008 at 11:21 am

Ya know, this reminds me. His name is spelled Chien Ming Wang, but everybody says ‘Ching’ Ming Wang. Is it pronounced Chien or Ching. Pete?

  4. mel May 5th, 2008 at 11:25 am

Thanks, Pete. That second video was so powerful.

What an amazing journey from the island nation of Formosa to the bright lights, big city of New York.

I hope that Chien Ming is happy. I’m sure I’m not the only one who loves Wang and everything he brings to the Yankees.

Would love to read your book and hope that a US version is in the works.

  5. Blargh May 5th, 2008 at 11:25 am

  6. Blargh May 5th, 2008 at 11:30 am

    “They Love Wang in Taiwan”

Yankee fans also love Wang in New York

  8. Believe in Wang May 5th, 2008 at 11:34 am

The second one,the main theme is about “Believe Chien-Ming Wang”-you can see the chinese text in the end with the Nike swoosh means “Believe” in english which is also the text in the front side of that T-Shirt he handed out to teammate a couple of days ago.

Yes!We believe in Wang,he will win against Cliff Lee next start.

  9. saucY May 5th, 2008 at 11:39 am

where’s the commercial where he’s dancing toward the end?

  10. Law May 5th, 2008 at 11:43 am

    In Taiwan:

    Wang’s are loved.
    Kitty’s are eaten.

Im moving there now. GO WANG YANKEErs….wait

Pete, when are you going to get a reader Q&A with The Wanger?

  14. Doreen May 5th, 2008 at 11:59 am

I absolutely loved the second commercial. As mel said, very powerful – very moving. Great juxtaposition (love that word) of the child with the dream and the man living the dream. It gave me chills.

  15. monique May 5th, 2008 at 12:11 pm

    “Law”,
Your vicious comment against Wang or Yankees won’t hurt anybody but yourself. I’m curious to know what you will say about the recent massacre in Tibet…

The second one was the video they showed on Wang’s press conference held in Taiwan last Nov.

Basically, it shows the first glove, sneaker, jersey, and baseball Wang had/used when he was a kid, then compared to what he uses/wears now in NYY.

It also said, It’s a long journey for him to pitch for NYY, but nothing really changed in him, it’s a road from CMW to CMW… and what support him keeps doing so is he believes in himself.

  18. JoeT YANKEES - Joba = SP May 5th, 2008 at 12:39 pm

for the sake of my masculinity – I love me some CMW…. Wang is not my favorite lol

  19. F-C L May 5th, 2008 at 12:44 pm

Translate by poor English. Don’t laugh at me…

The first commercial is widely seen on TV during Asia Tournament hosted in Taiwan last year. Because Wang is famous in Japan, I thought all these Wang comercial might make Japanese team awe us a bit more. But in the end, we were atrociously knocked out by Korean ass and Japan. I hope Yankees let Wang play for Taiwan this WBC, or else Taiwan is hopeless again this year.

  21. die'suc'k May 5th, 2008 at 1:24 pm

Pitch the game to Japan in WBC will be tough but I like the chance Wang shutout a lineup composed of

    1.Ichiro (CF)
    2.mini Matsui (ss)
3.Takahashi(LF) (he hit a two run homer from Wang in Athen Olympic )
4.hideki matsui (DH) (it will be fun)
    5.Fukudome (RF)
    6.Kenji Jojima or Abe (C)
    7.Iwamura(3B)
    8.Iguchi(2B)
    9.小笠原(1B)

  22. Yankeebaseball May 5th, 2008 at 1:27 pm

Actually I think I’ve seen some US commercials. =0)

  23. Scorpio May 5th, 2008 at 1:51 pm

Just a quick Wang stat update:

CMW has 32 Strikeouts to date, tied with Matsuzaka, 2 less than Beckett, 6 less than Halladay. King Felix is the current AL leader at 44.

Not bad, imo. I’m not a big stat head but I like to build a slow and steady case towards Wanger’s Ace-dom.

  24. Brian from PA May 5th, 2008 at 3:47 pm

Yeah Chien Ming Wang is pretty much the man. That second commercial was epic.

  25. Brian from PA May 5th, 2008 at 3:50 pm

Scorpio: i don’t think you need to build a slow steady case for his “Ace-dom”. He is an ace. just because a fairly small, cynical group of people think that he isn’t doesn’t make it so. I don’t see how he’s not the ace. He dominates most of the time he pitches. He’s our number 1 guy. He has a staggering win-loss record so far in his young career. If he’s not an ace i don’t know what is.

  26. chaossolver May 5th, 2008 at 5:01 pm

i love how us chinese people decided to call fastballs straight balls and just phonatically translate sinker in the movie…
it would be hilarious to see what we are going to come up with for his slider and changeup…

  27. chaossolver May 5th, 2008 at 5:04 pm

    by the way FCL…
good try at the translation lol, that is pretty accurate

  28. Blargh May 5th, 2008 at 5:16 pm

No idea about slider, but isn’t changeup already referred to as huan su qiu?

  29. Patrick Bateman May 5th, 2008 at 5:16 pm

Wang looks Latin in his bobblehead

  30. chaossolver May 5th, 2008 at 5:22 pm

really? eh i’m ashamed to say that i dont know any of the technical terms in Chinese. and that was the first time i have ever heard of direct translation of fastball and sinker in to chinese…
that makes sense for changeup… but seriously shen ke qiu? that is does not do justice to sinker.

  31. Frank Discussion May 5th, 2008 at 5:58 pm

Good stuff there, Pete. Wonder if Michael Kay is ready to recant his position in which he stated that Wang is not an “ace” or a #1 starter…

We’re driving up for the Wednesday game, I’m looking forward to seeing Wang pitch, first time for me seeing him pitch at the stadium. I need a new jersey as well, I think
#40 will suit me just fine…

I can see it already DESTINY: The Ching-Ming Wang Story

  33. E. May 5th, 2008 at 10:35 pm

Wang is loved in Taiwan not just due to his wins in Major. He represents a traditional Taiwanese value of keep your head down and work hard. Then you will someday become something. Just like what the second TVC showed. You believe in yourself and it will happen one day.

My parents watched Wang by not knowing the rules of baseball. But they see the true value of a countryside Taiwanes boy works his way up to shine the world.

  34. Yishan May 5th, 2008 at 10:48 pm

    Merci, Peter!

We do love him so much in Taiwan, not just because he is one of the Yankees, but because he shows so much as a Taiwanese boy. Very traditional and very powerful. Thank you for bringing his story for NY fans. Thank you NY fans for loving him as we do. You are so welcomed in Taiwan! (maybe as welcomed as Joe Torre! haha!)

Thank you so much for the sharing!

  35. STEVE May 5th, 2008 at 11:03 pm

Wang is inevitably everywhere in the world.

    1. Family name “Wang”, meaning “King” in Chinese, has been one of the top big family name among Chinese world, 50 million population per se.

    2. His diligence and low-key personality represent the merits the people have consistently placed upon.

    3. His rise to fame at the most competitive MLB club of the world’s greatest city is also a dream for most people in the world.

    4. He is full of every possibility to succeed in his profession as he is ever evoving and advancing. We anticipate the amazement.

    5. From street snack bars to grand shopping malls, Wang’s posters are easily to be seen as he is just like the neighbor’s boy. No fantasy! No silver spoon!

    For slider, they use hua2 qiu2. Sinker is shen2 ka3 qiu2.

    Mel,
yes, Chien-Ming said he has been enjoying playing baseball last March.

Chien-Ming keeps up his heart and fire at baseball, and there is no doubt he sees he will surely hit something!

I’m thankful for you guys, Yankee fans and Pete, for loving Chien-Mien so much.

  38. Max May 6th, 2008 at 4:41 am

Taiwan needs a hero. Wang is right person in the right time to fit the role. Wang earns more respects than high ranking politicians. Nevertheless, he represents the true core value of Taiwanese. People admire and support him.
