The Yankees made an adjustment yesterday, sending down Ian Kennedy before Darrell Rasner beat the Mariners. Kevin Devaney Jr. has the story.
For Rasner, it was the culmination of a long comeback. This notebook also has updates on Joba Chamberlain, Kei Igawa, Hideki Matsui and Melky Cabrera.

Kei Igawa is a ridiculously bad choice, they must not want to win that game at all.
” Filling the rotation?: Kei Igawa’s solid start in Triple-A Scranton will likely earn him Ian Kennedy’s spot in the rotation.
Igawa has pitched well this season, going 3-3 with a 3.86 ERA. He started yesterday against Durham, striking out eight and allowing four runs in seven innings for the victory. ”
.
is this a Joke ? Those numbers, INCLUDING what he did last night, you would call it Solid ?…Man, Igawa coming to the Yankees is something I’ll bet 99% of fans dread. I can’t see this ending well for him NOR the Yankees final 2008 win total…hopefully he WON’T come up, or if he does it will be for one start and not ONE PITCH MORE !
i agree, but who else is there to promote? the yankees have money invested in igawa and they’re going to see if there’s any chance of getting some sort of return on it.
Igawa needs to be taken out back to the shed and have those gd sunglasses knocked off his face.
Kennedy also needs an attitude adjustment
can you imagine this guy in New York and dealing with the media
http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/cs-080504-ozzie-guillen-swears-media-chicago,0,6562039.story
not at all, he would be killed daily. ^^^
I do not get the money invested argument. They wasted that money….period ! Do you think the Red Sox would be pitching Dice-K still in the rotation if he had an era of say, 12.00 in the majors ? At some point, you have to say,,,,this pitcher was a mistake….we should NOT have spent the money on him. And just because we made the mistake of getting this bum, doesn’t mean we are going to let him come up to the bigs and STINK IT UP again, just because he BEAT US out of millions of dollars. The name of the game is to WIN THE GAME….and A 500 million dollar pitcher that can’t throw a pitch over the plate is not going to win you any games just because he is overpaid !
Give Igawa another chance. Sure he was horrible in his first stint in the majors but he has spent a lot of time in AAA now. He has pitched fairly well with Scranton and he is the most major league ready pitcher we have that is available. I don’t expect him to be very good but I have hope and I’m willing to give him another shot. If he bombs we go to Steven White and give him a shot. If he bombs we go down to the next guy and keep going until someone sticks or until Kennedy is ready. Just the way it goes when there are injuries or someone doesn’t perform.
Patrick,
I agree.
Its not like they have a bunch of great options.
Fact is, somebody has to pitch. If he doesn’t pitch well, they will go to somebody else the next time they need a 5th starter.
They only need a 5th starter 3 times in May. Whomever it is, if they can give them a chance to win 2 of those 3 games, its about all you can ask for.
I have to go with the sacrificial lamb theory; a Tigers offense that’s finally alive isn’t an ideal first major league game I’d want for a younger pitcher, so might as well give it to a guy who’s already gotten beaten around.
Igawa hasn’t pitched well in Scranton at all, his strikeouts are the only thing well and the % of strikes to balls thrown. Even w/ that he has a horrible balls in play for outs stat. 39% GO to 61% FO is not well for a SP that was told by Yankees FO to work on keeping the ball down. This is a horrible decision.
The only other person they have to pitch that’s on the 40 man roster is White.
Perhaps they don’t want to make a move on the 40 man to bring up McCutcheon (their only other viable option) at this time.
They have 46 million dollars invested in Igawa. At some point, they have to find out if the guy can pitch in at least one major league game.
Is it a great choice? No. But, its a choice they are almost forced to make right now. At least for one start.
If he bombs, I suspect White is the next guy to get a shot at contributing something as the 5th starter.
Is White on 40 roster?
Is the Igawa move official? Has he been put on the roster, and if so who was sent down.
Where is Karstens????? Sad to say but we need him now. Update anyone????
I’m assuming in the next day or two we will see two of Ramirez, Albaladejo, Britton, and Veras go back to AAA for Igawa and Betemit.
Guys if we can survive Chase Wright, Tyler Clippard and Matt Desalvo we can survive Kei Igawa for 3 starts
With the money invested it is worth giving Igawa one last shot before officially moving on. As good as Rasner was the other day, our bats came alive. We would have won that game if Igawa started.
“I’m assuming in the next day or two we will see two of Ramirez, Albaladejo, Britton, and Veras go back to AAA for Igawa and Betemit.”
Tough choice between Veras and Ramirez (assuming Alba is a given to stay and Britton is a given to go).
I’d like to see Betemit given time at first in lieu of Giambi. Betemit is a better fielder and he is a good bat despite what we saw earlier in the year. I’d like to see a Betemit/Duncan platoon at first. Unfortunately I doubt they will bench Giambi unless he gets injured.
Giambi won’t have that many ABs taken away from him as much as we all want it to happen. We are more likely to see a lefty/right platoon at both 1B and 3B until A-Rod comes back to man 3B.
Giambi won’t have that many ABs taken away from him as much as we all want it to happen. We are more likely to see a lefty/right platoon at both 1B and 3B until A-Rod comes back to man 3B.
Yeah you are right I didn’t really think of that.
It seems to me that the Yankees will have to get rid of one of Duncan, Betemit and Ensberg. Hopefully one of those guys plays well and gains a little trade value before A-rod comes back.
I kind of wish we still had Scott Proctor. That isn’t looking like the best deal right now. But I think it was done as there was uncertainty that A-Rod would be back. I think we could send Gonzalez back down for a month to see if we can trade Betemit or even Ensberg. Just to get anything back in return. I doubt we cut either away for nothing.
Proctor has a 5.3 ERA and an ERA+ of 82 while pitching in the NL west. No thanks.
“I doubt we cut either away for nothing.”
True, it might come down to a decision on whether to send down Gonzalez or Duncan. Proctor was a good innings eater but at the time I loved the Betemit trade. I still think he could be a very good third baseman but I doubt he will get enough playtime with the Yankees to prove that. I agree though, it would be nice to take back that Proctor trade.
Proctor’s numbers haven’t been good this year, but it is still only April. Last two years he has pitched in the 3.50-3.75 area. There is always room for that in your bullpen. As long as his arm wasn’t damaged from excessive use he’d still be our first or second best option in the bullpen after Mo and Joba.
Proctor has sucked 13.2 IP, 12 H, 9 R, 8 ER and a GO/AO of 10-19….what does anyone miss from this.
Because it has only been 13.2 innings. I miss a guy who can give you 80 IP in a season with an ERA in the mid to high 3’s. How many guys do we have who can do that now?
It is only April. Look how many people have started awful.
Ian he has 3.76 BB per 9, 8.43 hits per 9 IP, career wise, watch as his arm will not last and will not be as effective as it was before.
Which equals about a 1.35 career WHIP. Which isn’t great but average. Just from looking at the turnstile we have in the bullpen right now and what Betemit is giving us even if he was healthy, I just think that Proctor would be more useful to the team this year than Betemit has or will be.
“Just from looking at the turnstile we have in the bullpen right now”
the bullpen has been very good. who cares if it’s a “turnstile”?
the yankees are WELL stocked with good-but-not-great RH relievers.
their system is flush with many more potential pitchers who can do what Proctor can do.
like you said, the yankees didn’t know if A-Rod was staying or not. now that he is back and AG looks like he can play in the majors, maybe you look to move Betemit.
but i don’t really get the pining for Scott Proctor.
“their system is flush with many more potential pitchers who can do what Proctor can do.”
None have done it yet. Except for Joba who will be heading back to the rotation eventually. We will see when they get more of an opportunity. I think Ohlendorf can for now. The others I’m not so sure about.
but i don’t really get the pining for Scott Proctor.
I’m not really pining for Proctor because I think the guys we have can do the same job he did. It’s more that Betemit offers very little value to the team right now and Proctor would be of more value. At the time the Betemit trade looked good, in hindsight not so good.
I’m not really pining for Proctor. I just thought of him when thinking about what we are going to do with Betemit. And your are right Proctor would offer more value to our team right now than Betemit, and that’s really the bottom line. Looking back on it, it wasn’t the greatest trade unless Betemit really turns it around. But I do think it was made because A-Rod’s uncertainty at the time.
And as for this year, don’t be suprised if none of our young relievers can give us what Proctor did the last two years. Yankee fans have are very good at diminishing what ex-players have done for us after we let them go or trade them away. Proctor was a good player for us, which led to his overuse under Torre.
“And as for this year, don’t be suprised if none of our young relievers can give us what Proctor did the last two years. ”
he was good in 2006. last year? not so much.
his ERA was deceptive, he stunk.
in fact, his numbers looked exactly like this guy:
Proctor: 54.3 IP, 53 H, 29 BB, 37 K, 8 HR, 1.509 WHIP
Player F: 60 IP, 60 H, 27 BB, 48 K, 9 HR, 1.45 WHIP
in other words, he was basically the exact same pitcher as Kyle Farnsworth in 2007, the guy everyone wanted released at the trade deadline.
Well I never watned Farnsworth released. Traded? Sure if we could get back decent value. Farnsworth is a borderline head case to me. Thats the difference. Proctor also took the ball whenever asked and never complained. Which might have been his downfall. He could take the ball in the middle of an inning, for more than one inning, and even on consectutive days. All things Farnsworth has either shown he can’t do, or has expressed his unwillingness to do so.
gotcha.
i don’t want to come across as a Farnsworth fan…
“It was disappointing, but what am I going to do? I’m not going to whine,” Rasner said. “I had to be a professional and I had to pitch every five days. I just needed some innings under my belt and give myself an opportunity.”

Very professional on the part of Darrell Rasner. First of all, he never quit on himself.
Glenn (3:14)
Very good of Raz to look at things the way he did. He never quit on himself…that says it all. Let’s hope IPK/Phil can learn from the older and more experienced Raz. With his being released and then coming back like he did, was nothing but CLASS.
Now, if Phil/IPK can take the same attitude, get some more innings, work on the composure and confidence needed in the Majors, they too can be back. Heck, they have the talent, now it is up to them. 27/08.
I think you all need to give Igawa another chance. Look at Rasner, he was released by the Yanks last year, pitched well in AAA and came back and deserved another shot. While Igawa has not pitched as well at Scranton as Rasner did, he does deserve at least one more chance while Kennedy works out his problems at Scranton.
igawa stinks.the yankees would be better off forfitting the game and resting the players.i’ll tell you who should pitch over igawa, olendorf or mcutchen.mcutchen is doing great in AA.a guy with a 4 era in AAA will have a 5.5-6 in the majors.it doesn’t matter how much igawa is costing the yankees, the important thing is winning.they should release giambi, put betemit at first base, gonzalez backup infielder,dh matsui, damon in left and call up gardner to be the 4th outfielder.if kennedy doesn’t pitch well we won’t see him this year.he might put pressure on himself just to get back to the majors.i like what cashman said, baseball will tell you when it’s time to make a change and it is time to make a change regarding kennedy.great move for now.you have to ride who is hot like rasner because the situation needs to be fixed, not only were the kids getting crushed it was wearing the bullpen out.ras pitched a great game.you have to throw strikes and get ahead in the count.
