Report from Tampa on the rehab crew

This just in from the Associated Press:

Alex Rodriguez took 57 swings in batting practice and fielded 31 grounders at third base during his first injury rehabilitation workout Friday at the New York Yankees’ minor league complex.

Rodriguez is on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right quadriceps. The three-time AL MVP, who resumed on-field workouts Wednesday at Yankee Stadium, could rejoin the team late next week.

A-Rod hit several long homers, including a pair that went over the center-field back drop. He also ran in the outfield.

Rodriguez said the session went “good” and gave a thumb’s up as left the field for the clubhouse.

Catcher Jorge Posada took batting practice for the first time since going on the DL on April 28 with right rotator cuff tendinitis. The switch-hitter took 28 swings right-handed and 26 from the left side. Posada, expected to be out at least another month, could start a light throwing program early next week.

Right-hander Jeff Karstens, sidelined since straining his right groin March 27, could pitch in an extended spring training game Saturday. He was the front-runner for the long man role out of the bullpen before getting hurt in his last scheduled spring training appearance.

    great news.

goood to hear A-Rod is doing well. I hope that when he comes back he’s actually ready…let’s try and stay injury-free!

we need arod’s bat in he lineup. he’s so good and will balance a lefty heavy lineup.

  4. TKinDC May 9th, 2008 at 3:01 pm

When is the MRI supposed to be on A-Quad?

I am happy for Karstens. I hoped that he would be Girardi’s long man this year but when he was injured that evaporated. I always kind of root for the AAAA guys to do well when they get their moments.

“When is the MRI supposed to be on A-Quad?”

Monday? I think the idea is to verify that everything looks good before they put him in the extended ST games.

    Questions from a friend:

Regarding the 5 year wait to become Hall of Fame eligible, does that automatically start counting at the end of the year of which he stopped playing? Or does he have to officially announce that he is retired?

Has there ever been any player who got elected to the Hall of Fame, and came back to play?

  7. Laura May 9th, 2008 at 3:09 pm

Can we get credit for those dingers A-Rod hit in rehab for tonight’s game?

  8. whozat May 9th, 2008 at 3:10 pm

“Regarding the 5 year wait to become Hall of Fame eligible, does that automatically start counting at the end of the year of which he stopped playing?”

    Yup.

    Great news.

Things are finally beginning to look up (or so we hope)

  10. TKinDC May 9th, 2008 at 3:12 pm

“Has there ever been any player who got elected to the Hall of Fame, and came back to play?

not to my knowledge unless it was the 1800s

1st question: I would guess they look back at 4 yrs out.

  11. Potch May 9th, 2008 at 3:15 pm

“Has there ever been any player who got elected to the Hall of Fame, and came back to play?”

To my knowledge, none that played in a regular season game. But there was at least one who tried a spring comeback after being elected.

Jim Palmer in the late 80′s.

  12. raymagnetic â„¢ May 9th, 2008 at 3:18 pm

    In regards to Jim Palmer:

“In 1991, he tried to make a comeback with the Orioles, which would have been unprecedented for a Hall of Fame inductee, but his attempt ended in spring training.”

    Source: http://www.baseball-reference......Jim_Palmer

So I would guess that would mean their are no HOF players who successfully came out of retirement to play again.

    What about Pavano?

  14. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 May 9th, 2008 at 3:21 pm

Wasn’t aware Pavano had hall credentials?

  15. mel May 9th, 2008 at 3:21 pm

Can A-rod just pull a Papi? Only take base if it’s a homerun?

  16. TKinDC May 9th, 2008 at 3:24 pm

    mel –

I meant to mention earlier that you line about a comment posted on the blog saying that Pete was venerable and you said something like “maybe he meant venereal” had me ROFLMAO.

    Excellent work!

  17. S.A.-I am still happy Phil Hughes was saved! May 9th, 2008 at 3:25 pm

    Great news!

  18. Sara May 9th, 2008 at 3:26 pm

“A-Rod hit several long homers, including a pair that went over the center-field back drop.”
That’s great A-Rod hit long homers in batting practice with some old coach lobbing the ball over! God, who cares. Just get back here and do it when it counts!!!

  19. mel May 9th, 2008 at 3:30 pm

    TK,

Thanks. Although we should clarify that I was referring to Nomaas which continues their PeteHate campaign.

Zach McAllister goes into hitter’s friendly Ashvielle tonight, keep an eye on that minor league matchup tonight.

  21. whozat May 9th, 2008 at 3:33 pm

“God, who cares. Just get back here and do it when it counts!!!”

So…you’re angry at Alex because the AP reported the progress of his rehab?

  22. Fernando Alejandro (Respect Jeter's Gangster) May 9th, 2008 at 3:34 pm

“Wasn’t aware Pavano had hall credentials?”

His numbers don’t look good now, but I suspect he has at least 4 – 20 win/Cy Young seasons left in his arm.

  23. Sara May 9th, 2008 at 3:37 pm

ummm…who said i was mad at Alex? It is just stupid what the AP reports. Alex can hit homers in batting practice in his sleep with two broken arms and a quad injury.

  24. whozat May 9th, 2008 at 3:39 pm

Huh. Tonight is Wright’s night to pitch. They’ve already got Geise moved into the rotation, and now they’ve got another spot starter in there too. Sure, you can say it’s because they expect Igawa to get shelled and come back down, but we know SOMEONE out of the AAA rotation will be up in the bigs for the forseeable future — whether Igawa and Kennedy swap after one more start, or Kennedy has to stay down and they decide White gives them a better shot at winning than Kei does or whatever. I guess they’ve got Horne coming back soon, and maybe they want to keep Giese in the rotation, so they didn’t want to bring a guy up that they’d just have to send back down.

  25. pat May 9th, 2008 at 3:39 pm

    Sara

A-Rod has a week until it can count. How about venting a little at some of the guys who can make it “count” in the next 7 days. You’ll have about 120 days after that to rail at A-Rod.

  26. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 7) May 9th, 2008 at 3:40 pm

“His numbers don’t look good now, but I suspect he has at least 4 – 20 win/Cy Young seasons left in his arm.”

made me spit my Pepsi

  27. whozat May 9th, 2008 at 3:41 pm

“ummm…who said i was mad at Alex? It is just stupid what the AP reports.”

You sounded it. I’m glad to hear that he was able to drive the ball. It means that he’s able to generate power off his back leg. That’s meaningful when we’re talking about an injury to that leg.

  28. Jeff B. May 9th, 2008 at 3:42 pm

Anyone see some of the boys at the Red Wings game?

  30. Don Vito A. Bellamo May 9th, 2008 at 3:48 pm

Thanks again, Pete…for keeping all of us YANKEE FANS in the loop….even those who say they are BoSux fans, but strangely enough, prefer to hang out and hear about the daily workings of a REAL MLB Team ! :-)

  31. Sara May 9th, 2008 at 3:50 pm

let’s just back track a little bit here. Before the quad injury how many make it count moments had A-Rod or any Yankee for that matter come through on??? What are A-Rod’s numbers with RISP this season? What are the Yankees numbers with RISP this year? NOT GOOD!
Listen, I am not getting on anyone or venting or ripping anyone…just saying, I would like to see a few long homers, like yesterday, from everyone, including Alex when it counts. Everyone knows these guys hit homers left and right in batting practice.

  32. whozat May 9th, 2008 at 3:53 pm

“Everyone knows these guys hit homers left and right in batting practice.”

When you’re talking about an injury to his push-off leg, knowing that he’s driving the ball deep to center is a relevant piece of data when discussing his recovery from that injury.

  33. Micky#7--Old Ranger May 9th, 2008 at 4:01 pm

Also, that A-Rod is hitting up the middle. A lot try to pull everything, when they come back. 27/08.
