Betemit to DL; Gonzalez to return

Peter Abraham
May
10

Wilson Betemit will be placed on the 15-day disabled list tomorrow. Alberto Gonzalez has been summoned from Scranton.

Jon Albaladejo has a sprain of the ulnar collateral ligament and a strain of the posterial capsule. It is not expected he will need surgery, but he won’t be back any time soon.

And today’s trip to the DL has been sponsored by Mt. Sinai Hospital, 1 Gustave L .Levy Place New York, NY.
The place to go for all your MRI needs.

  2. Jax

    Welcome back Gonzo.

  3. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 8 )

oh brother ok one more time…GONZO ! :D

but jesus just turn Bet into a LH bat.

  4. leok

    Blessing in disguise….

  5. Rhapsody in Blue

Too bad about Albaladejo, I had just learned the proper spelling of his last name and he was effective, gaining Girardi’s trust and carving out a niched for himself out of the bullpen.

  6. Rhapsody in Blue

I like Gonzo real good leather, he has that Bucky Dent aura.

  7. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 8 )

    “Blessing in disguise….”

explain how losising RBI pop is a blessing in disguise ?

  8. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 8 )

    losing*

  9. S.A.-No more Igawa!!!!

    Welcome back Gonzo.
    Poor Albaladejo and Betemit

  10. Joe from Long Island

Tough luck for Albaladejo. At least it’s not surgery. We should see him back this year.

Tough luck, also, for Betemit. I’m not all that high on him, but still tough for him.

An open door for AG. Let’s hope he takes advantage of it.

Next job – win tomorrow. I’m tired of flirting with .500. Let’s get some consistency and put together a bit of a streak.

  11. leok

Brandon did you watch Betemit in the field yesterday? Gonzo can hit .220 just like Betemit can.

  12. Don Vito A. Bellamo

today’s win was the start of a 6 game winning streak that takes us to 24-19 !!! Enjoy the ride, ALL ! :-)

  13. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 8 )

“Brandon did you watch Betemit in the field yesterday? Gonzo can hit .220 just like Betemit can.”

Betemit prior to yesterday’s game looked good on defense and you know that, other than that he is a better run producer than Gonzo, Gonzo is the better ball in play hitter but is not a run producer.

  14. Rhapsody in Blue

The real stoopid plays are driving me crazy, they need to stop, Giambi running through the stop sign today.Good thing we won.

  15. Jimmy

    Be cool

  16. Kevin

Why does it seem Pete has injury news every day whether it is old or new? I can take old injury news (Posada, ARod, and Hughes to an extent) but new injury news is just compounding the problem I do not know how much more injury news I can take at this point. I hope Girardi’s hair is not turning gray because mine just might before the end of the season.

  17. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

Just got in, but was watching the game elsewhere. Anyone catch the conversation that Joba and Joe had when he got to the dugout Joe laughed when Joba walked away, than Joba let out a fist pump as he walked away. good to see the kid is having fun with it.

  18. S.A.-No more Igawa!!!!

Bases loaded for Dice-k with 1 out..
watch..he’ll get out of it somehow

  19. whozat

“Brandon did you watch Betemit in the field yesterday? Gonzo can hit .220 just like Betemit can.”

Since Betemit came back from the DL (and could, you know…see) he’s hit .385 with a SLG over .750. Two doubles, a HR, a couple RBIs and a couple runs scored.

Even with his poor start, he was slugging .462, with an OBP near .300. So, his OPS was around .760. For a backup, that’s really not bad.

He’s definitely a better hitter than Gonzo.

  20. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 8 )

Gomez drawing walks 2 consecutive nights, I’m shocked

  21. Terry

I love watching all these walks by Dice K. There’s no way he can get away with it forever.

  22. Terry

Lucky pooch. Dice K gets out of it with an at-him bomb.

  23. S

So… Carl Pavano could be back in July?

  24. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 8 )

he just did and someone should beat Matt Tolbert w/ his bat for him swinging at pitch #1

  25. geO

amazing Matsuzaka has 107BB over a span of 1 and half year in the majors… isn’t that a new record?

  26. Nick in SF

I think Kei Igawa just laughed at Dice-K’s last pitch.

Not the K pitch, the one before that.

  27. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 8 )

nice stat I just read, Minnesota is 1st in the AL w/ 2 outs RISP batting .321

  28. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 8 )

odds of Bronson Arroyo getting to the 4th inning tonight ?

  29. Fran

I know that Betemit did not play well last night but I feel bad for him. He just comes back and then hurts his hamstring. I feel bad for Albaladejo too.

  30. S.A.-No more Igawa!!!!

wow. Bronson got out of it

  31. trisha - I believe in Ks - Kyle, and Kei working out his stuff in AAA!

Didn’t get to watch today’s game. Didn’t need to. Had total confidence in Rasner. Looks like we might have our #4 in the rotation.

Is the thing about Betemit to the DL a wink wink? Did he hurt himself during the game? If he is hurt that would at least explain his poor play at 3rd yesterday.

In any event, Gonzo will be at 3rd Wednesday night in case Igawa ends up pitching again!

    GO TWINS!!!!!

  32. Nick

The end of a perfect day would see Francoma [again] going to Papsmear and seeing him flame out after Matsuzaka walked 8 or more Twins hitters for the night.

    YESSSSSS !!!!

  33. Fran

Hey Trish – he really got hurt. He pulled up lame after he hit a double to drive in a run.

Rasner loked really good. And Kyle got into a jam and out of it. He did good too. And Mo and Joba.

    See you tomorrow

  34. YankeeJosh

    Brandon,

Here’s my thinking on Betemit. He’s a very good left-handed hitter , who plays okay defense and hits homers but strikes out way too much.

The Yankees as currently constituted do not need another left-handed bat. With Damon, Melky, Abreu, Giambi and Matsui, they have enough left handed talent.

Ensberg serves a role on this team, providing a right handed option to spell the lefties when needed. Same for Shelley Duncan.

Gonzalez serves a different role. He has speed, great defense at 3 positions, and is a better contact hitter. He’s the type of ballplayer I personally favor.

When A-Rod gets back, I just really don’t see a role for Betemit on this team. The Yankees are configured so that they’d be better served by having Gonzalez and Ensberg on the team than Betemit imo.

  35. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 8 )

whose’s this Glen Perkins LHP sitting at 93- 94 topping out at 95 for Minny ?

  36. Blargh

Some young guy; he was used mainly as a reliever in last two years apparently (4 appearances in 2006, 19 appearances in 2007)

  37. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 8 )

YankeeJOsh I haven’t seen anything added by Duncan right now, so lets calm down on that, Ensberg needs to hit better also and his bat is going to be in competition w/ Shelley, Bet again I agree w/ the role explanation for Gonzo’s bat but it makes no sense to make that move because you think they can produce, point here is they have yet to produce in thier spots.

Duncan + Ensberg have equaled to nothing on this roster. Gonzo is a very talented glove but is not a run producer also you know at some point Giambi will go down w/ an injury.

Bronson is getting smacked around but his defense is keeping him in the game, he better pay for dinner tonight.

  38. J-Dawg--Veintisiete en '08, (Kei is not O-Kei)

Ouch. Cleveland is really lighting up Dustin McGowan tonight, 9-0 in the 4th.

  39. Blargh

Well, McGowan got smacked for 9 runs in 3.7 innings

  40. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 8 )

anyway Whozat explained it very fairly for all those thoughts on Bet being useless he in his short time on the roster whether it’s pink eye or now the hamstring he has produced more times than not.

  41. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 8 )

    Wolverine getting rocked.

  42. Daily DL

    Who will get hurt tomorrow?

    I’m predicting Pettitte.

  43. Hideki "Fat Toad" Irabu

I’ve noticed that New York holds me in a higher regard since the arrival of Igawa.

    Hoo hoo hoo !

  44. Reality Check

Betances threw second bad start in a row for Charleston. So far 4 ip, 6 hits, 5 ers. Thought he had harnessed his incredible talent. Guess not yet.

despite the protestations of some on this blog, the twins have a lot of young pitchers between the major league roster and the red wings at triple a.

perkins is a perfect example. how high do you think yankee fans would be on him if he was a yankee? there was a reason why the twins weren’t jumping through hoops to get hughes and kennedy.

they even traded away garza who was close to hughes in potential.

  46. trisha - I believe in Ks - Kyle, and Kei working out his stuff in AAA!

HA HA HA HA HA! Stupid Pedroia cuts off the throw from center.

    Twins 1-0.

    :D

  47. S.A.-No more Igawa!!!!

    Twinkies up 2-1

  48. trisha - I believe in Ks - Kyle, and Kei working out his stuff in AAA!

Oh Fran, poor Wilson. He must feel snakebitten. He just got off the DL! I was reading today’s game posts and saw he pulled a hammie. Tough way to get Gonzo back up but I will be so happy to see his D again!

I’m watching the Sux game. It is just amazing that the best closer in the game has blown back to back saves. Isn’t that what Sux fans call Papelsmear? A little young for him to be blowing back-to-back saves, isn’t it? Seems to me that when Mo was his age he was breaking bats, not hearts…

Oh how I would love to see the smear have to take the bottom of the 9th tonight and, you guessed it. We already are making a video collection of his blown saves on another forum where I post!

  49. trisha - I believe in Ks - Kyle, and Kei working out his stuff in AAA!

    Nice job Twinkies!

  50. RUSS MCCORMICK

    HELLO

  51. RUSS MCCORMICK

Good game by the Yanks today. Rasner looked good. Looks like Giambi and Cano might be coming out of their slumps too.

  52. S.A.-No more Igawa!!!!

    Go Cavs! Come on!

  53. trisha - I believe in Ks - Kyle, and Kei working out his stuff in AAA!

    Hi Russ -

Not sure if anyone is around these parts right now. I just dropped in to see what was going on but wasn’t around for today’s game. Rasner looked great from what I heard.

Watching the Sux game now. Minny leading 2-1. Hope it holds up!

  54. trisha - I believe in Ks - Kyle, and Kei working out his stuff in AAA!

    Drat.

  55. S.A.-No more Igawa!!!!

    2-2 now. Coco HR

  56. jay destro

reminder… kei igawa will never ever be good. he should never make a major league start again. i hate him and his stupid face. please fall in a muddy puddle.

  57. S.A.-No more Igawa!!!!

Well..the Cavs are awake right now
    43-17? whoa

Ugh. The red sox with the lead

  58. Greg G.

Peter — Not to get all technical on ya, but I’m fairly certain it’s the “posterior” capsule. (in re: Albaladejo’s injury)

  59. trisha - I believe in Ks - Kyle, and Kei working out his stuff in AAA!

Well it was a crap shoot giving up two homers but the Twins had to do something to get Papelsmear in the game…

    :D
    :D
    :D

  60. Kill-Schill(ing)

I’m betting Veras takes advantage of the opportunity Albaladejo’s injury offers.

  61. Whitey Fraud

As long as no one sprains their postcoital lateral nap, we’ll be all right.

    Zzzzzzzzzzzz….

(Smoke ‘em if you got ‘em.)

  62. bigjf
