Darrell Rasner may not be exciting but he has been exactly what the Yankees needed. Rasner and the Yanks beat the Tigers yesterday.

Derek Jeter finally hit a home run. This notebook also has updates on Wilson Betemit’s injury, the return of the Attorney General, A-Rod’s rehab and other news.

The Baseball Beat looks at who is on the hot seat around the game.

Don’t look now, but the Yankees bullpen has been one of the best in baseball this year. Everybody we’ve thrown out there has pitched well. Even Hawkins has pitched well for the most part when called upon. Those couple of bad outings he had have inflated his ERA, but he’s actually pitched well.

“In the meantime, I do think it’s a fair argument to say that Rasner’s age (27) and experience (not a whole of easy successes) have a lot to do with where he’s at right now, his attitude about being in the bigs”
    doreen-
i couldn’t agree more. rasner is much more seasoned than hughes and kennedy. it’s commonplace on the the blog for people to say hughes has nothing more to learn in the minors because he had done so well. it doesn’t work that way.
it’s hard to argue against the success hughes had in the minors, but i had no doubt and have no doubt that he was and is being rushed. no pitcher at hughes age just cruises into the big leagues. i know this is a controversial thing to say,but i’d like to see hughes stay in the minors until the very end of the year.
pitching depends on all the parts of the body being in sync and hughes has had three serious injuries in less than a year. that alone says he needs to back off. something is not right with his body. i think it’s just reacting to too much too soon.
the time at triple a could be used for developing a third pitch. it could also be used for learning the game sink into him the way it has with rasner. maybe hughes has had it too easy. nothing is that easy as he’s finding out.
hughes could be ruined if he’s rushed. it happens. taking time never hurts anyone. that’s the smart way to go. if hughes would have been traded to the twins, he would not have been thrown right into the rotation at the beginning of this year.
he would have been at rochester for a while to be brought up later in the season when he had a good base of innings under him or he would have been pitching in relief to get his feet wet. they bring up pitchers in a much different way than the yankees do. i think it’s a better way more grounded in the way young pitchers develop.
on the other hand, the yankees have done a good job with rasner and deserve credit for bringing him along. the irony is they do better when they don’t think a pitcher is special. the less they care the better they seem to do.

    whozat-
before you rip my opinion about hughes just remember that every minute you spend doing that it is a minute that you aren’t preparing to defend your dissertation. good luck with it by the way. that’s quite and achievement. i look forward to calling you dr. whozat.

About the bullpen. 6th in all of baseball (3rd in AL) with a 3.34ERA. But if you look beyond the ERA they’ve allowed 112H in 134 2/3 innings while walking 49 and K’ing 116. Great job. I guess Traber struggled a bit when he was up, but for the most part every guy they’ve thrown out there has done thier job.

Farnsworth has been great. For instance, last year a game like yesterday after the first two batters had hits after he inherited a baserunner he would’ve been toast. But he settled down and escaped by not letting any more runs score. Great job.

Mo has been dominant. Bruney pitched great before he was hurt. Ohlendorf has nasty stuff. Joba has been joba except for one hiccup. And the list of guys up and down from Scranton (Ramirez, Albaladejo, Veras, Britton)have all pitched well when called upon. Albeit Britton for 1 game and Veras for 2.

  5. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

I hope Joe G calls him up and tells him to shut the f up!

  6. DMan

Part of me wants to watch baseball today…

But a rain out would mean we could skip Igawa in the rotation..

I don’t know what to hope for!

  7. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

A rainout would also mean that the Yankees would have to travel back to Detroit on an off day to make up the game. You don’t want that either.

Also a little note, Joe mentioned two pitchers that were doing well in the minors; McCuthen and Giiese, so maybe they are considering those two to take Igawa’s spot. I cannot see them letting Igawa start on Wednesday.

  8. Dee – Pls bring back IPK and Gonzo!

“when Dellucci told reporters he thought Chamberlain’s response was immature and “bush,” Gossage didn’t hesitate to say, “I’m on Dellucci’s side.

“That’s just not the Yankee way, what Joba did. Let everyone else do that stuff, but not a Yankee,”"

Is it then the Yankee way to openly turn on one of your own like that? I can see Gossage disagreeing with what Joba did, he has every right to his opinions, but does he have to openly bash Joba to a reporter? Can’t he just give Joba a pointer or two inside the clubhouse?

I have a hunch that Joba’s fist pump may not be Girardi’s style either, but I bet if Joe has a problem with it he would talk to Joba behind closed doors instead of doing it in public. I personally see that as more of the Yankees way.

  9. josh

If Igawa gets another start.. i will seriously begin questioning the level of intelligence of the decision makers.. we all knew what would happe non friday, and we all know what will happen again on wednesday.

looks like todays game will be washed out though

  10. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

dee- Exactly. Is Mo going to say YEAH I have a problem with Joba’s fist pump? Than that will become the next headline. MO HAS PROBLEM WITH Joba’S FIST PUMP! HUGE PROBLEMS IN YANKEE CLUBSHOUSE.

    Is Klapish that stupid?

  11. MattQ

pete — love the anna benson line.

  12. Dee – Pls bring back IPK and Gonzo!

80-90% chance of precipitation in Detroit this afternoon and sounds windy and cold. I want to watch baseball but would rather we prevent the risk of more injuries and get to skip Igawa’s next start until IPK or Karsten is ready to take his spot the week after.

I’d worry later about having to make up the game in an off-day. For all I care we could be leading in the AL east standings by then, but now we need to be more careful especially with injuries.

  13. Glenn

A rainout to eliminate Igawa from a start may be worth a quick trip back to Detroit as long as Igawa is shipped back to AAA never to return again. Prolonging the agony is not the answer. Even his interpreter must be tired of telling him to pitch low in the strike zone.

  14. Dee – Pls bring back IPK and Gonzo!

Jennifer, exactly, Klapish is just trying to stir the pot!

It’s just lazy journalism to keep writing about the stupid fist pump. There are a lot of other more interesting and substantive things to write about around baseball. How about all the early injuries? How about the strength of the NL? How about the on-field injuries caused by maple bats?

  15. Tucson Ken

The only even remotely positive thing I saw from Igawa was big improvement in walks, but that of course was because everything he threw near the plate was absolutely drilled. I was scared that a player or coach was going to get killed by one of the rockets being given up.
How the Yankees could possibly have wasted that much $ on him is beyond me. He needs to be sold back to Japan if even they will take him back. I wouldn’t even waste another start on him, or if they must, yank him after the third hard hit ball in the first inning he pitches, because for sure, many more will follow.
Another huge starting pitcher waste of $ that we have seen all too often.

  16. S.A.-No more Igawa!!!!

What happened to my post? :(
    Lemme try this again:

“That’s just not the Yankee way, what Joba did. Let everyone else do that stuff, but not a Yankee,” Gossage said by telephone on Saturday. “What I don’t understand is, the kid’s got the greatest mentor in the world in Mariano [Rivera]. He’s one of the leaders of the team, so you’d think it wouldn’t happen on that team.”

It’s not the Yankee way? WTF?
So everyone else can do whatever…but the Yankees..can’t? Good lord. I still can’t believe that this is a big deal.

Also, what good is it for Gossage to say this to the press? Is this the Yankee way to take care of stuff? Do it via the press?

  17. Joe from Long Island

    1. Pete – as always, I love your Sunday Baseball Beat.

    2. Rebecca – congratulations on your graduation day. What are your plans for the summer before grad school?

    3. Whozat – good luck on your dissertation. What’s it on?

  18. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

Team chemistry at work: The Pirates released pitching prospect Olivo Astacio for a good reason last week: He attacked a teammate with a bat while working out at the team facility in Bradenton, Fla.

From Pete’s article. OUCH! Maybe he should be arrested as well.

  19. randy l.

“Is it then the Yankee way to openly turn on one of your own like that? I can see Gossage disagreeing with what Joba did, he has every right to his opinions, but does he have to openly bash Joba to a reporter?”

good point. behind closed doors would be the yankee way. the problem is that goose only spent about a fourth of his career with the yankees. with all due respect to a great pitcher goose isn’t really the one to be saying how the yankees do it.

the fact he’s now in the hall of fame and that his number isn’t retired shows he wasn’t a yankee for long enough. goose could voice his opinion as a hall of famer about joba and you have to listen, but i don’t think goose is qualified to speak for the yankees like guidry, mattingly,or yogi. it would be interesting to hear what yogi says about it,since it’s interesting to hear what he thinks about anything.

i don’t have a problem with what joba does, but i do think he’ll outgrow it. it takes an awful lot of young energy to get that excited.

  20. gayle

Dee no way Kastens is near ready he has to start building up his arm strength remeber it is like starting from scratch he hasnt thrown any innings.

I have said before I am not Klapisch fan. That articel just re-confirms my feelings.

Rainout today would allow us to skip Igaawa next time around which is just fine with me.

And what exactly is the Yankee way that is just a bnuch of hogwash as fa as I am concerned. Also for the person who said that it is not Joe G’s way. He as much said that on his weekly FAN segment but he also said that that is how JOba ishe knows what is in his heart and he is not trying to show anyone up and if hefelt that it was getting to that point he would saysomething.

  21. Dee – Pls bring back IPK and Gonzo!

Gayle, thanks for clarifying about Karstens.

Randy l, Yogi will probably say half the times a fist pump is acceptable, 50% of the time it’s not…or something like that:-)

  22. 86w183

Goose’s comments are really disappointing. Delucci’s criticism is idiotic considering how his teammate and future Yankee CC Sabathia was acting last week. I fele the same way about Joba as I do towards end zone celebrations.. you don’t like it, don’t let it happen.

I don’t know about the rest of you, but I’ve about had it with the wretched defense this team plays. Abreu, Damon, Matsui, Diambi, Duncan and Betemit… how many F$#@%ing DH types does one team need?

  23. randy l.

    gayle-
there is a yankee way. it’s hard to define, but you know it when you see it.

i don’t think what joba is doing is anything ,but youthful exuberance. i think any old time yankee would see it that way in these times.

the times we’re in has to be factored into it. players didn’t talk to other team’s players in the old days ,but they do now. a lot of things have changed.

like i said, you know it when you see it , and if you watched the yankee’s for over 50 years, it’s easy to see joba is a yankee. he’s go that charisma that you can’t teach.

  24. randy l.

    gayle-
… or yogi might say that he can’t play and do a fist pumo at the same time. huh.

  25. gayle

Randy I guess it is sort of like who is a true Yankee you really cant define it but you know it when you see it. My friend at work and I always talk about the true Yankees. Joba is a true Yankee fist pump or not

  26. rover

Personally, I don’t like individual celebration in any sport. Got news for you, when you do something really good, thats great, people will notice, and mangmnt is paying you to do that very thing. I expect you to do good things. Slapping the coaches hand or being slapped by a coach as you rond a base is one thing. A quarter back running to shake a hand is one thing. The fist pump is minor as celebration for doing your job goes. Hitters pulling an imaginary string, (horizontal fist pump i guess) has been around a long time. I just think all sport is better served when individual celebration for doing a job you are way overpaid to do, is something that should be shared on the bench, dugout or lockeroom. I can easily live with jobas pump, maybe in time as things go, he will find it less necessary for himself. Blame it on youthfull exhuberation if you want, that is likely true. But anytime you sign a contract to play a silly game for hundreds of thousand or millions, ya aint a youth no more. jmo

  27. rover

lol, The Yankee Way and porno are the same thing I guess, You know both when you see em. lol.
