"The Yankees are going to sell out in the new stadium the next couple of years regardless of who’s on the field. Big names or not."

That's true, but they want people to show up. And too frequently, the big spenders only come when they feel its worth it. Even if they sell every ticket in the house, the Yanks don't want people not showing up. I went to a game last August & the stadium was half filled. Most of those tix were sold, but people for whatever reason didn't want to come out to the stadium for that game. It doesn't look good when you see tons of empty seats, sold or unsold.

The Yankees are going to sell out in the new stadium the next couple of years regardless of who's on the field. Big names or not.
It's in year 3 of the new stadium that you have to put a winning product on the field to keep the fans coming.
Anyhow I don't think Hank has that kind of concern anyway. Hal is more of a business guy that would take something like that into account.

Sorry Bob, don't agree.

Fans usually think teams look bad when they don't win. I think the team has been streaky but I don't think they are bad.

IMO- Wang and Mussina have both been more effective than most would have guessed. The contributions from the bullpen have been good as well- lots less Farnsworthless jokes should drive that point home. Mo has had a remarkable start. Melky has played well defensively and has been a much more mature hitter. Matsui has been swinging the bat well. Gonzalez has played well defensively and has had his moments at the plate.

A friend of mine has a saying about "3 Attaboys" get erased by "1 oh (shoot)". That's what this team reminds me of now. They have done good things but it's easier to remember the bad ones.

Pete, nice seeing you during Johnny Damon's post game interview. You were front and center LOL
-------------------
"Memo to Hammering Hank and Cashman….watch the Rays and what the Red Sox are doing…might find a winning formula."
^^Bingo. Stop signing old, post-peak vets to ridiculous contracts and start bring up guys from the farm. The worst habit of the Yanks is hording prospects. We've lost some really good players because they got tired of being stuck in Tampa & Scranton and went to another team.
--------------------
"also I know that as educated Yankee fans we can accept a year of not making the playoffs provided that we are making progress for the future"
^^The fans can, but the owners don't want to. The Steinbrenners like the constant cash and don't want to go back to the empty seat era of the 80s, especially with the new stadium. Also to justify the ridiculous seat prices in the new building, the Yanks have to have "big names" on the team to attract the casual fan, big spender season ticket buyers.

Good point on the Rays athleticism and energy. The Yanks sure look old, slow and listless. I think Gomes would do anything to beat the Yanks. Too bad more fans in Tampa don't appreciate their young team.

"“are you the Livan Hernandez fan club of LHBlog fame?”
TKinDC-

at first i was just making an argument that the yankees needed a retread type veteran pitcher to pick up the kids this year and throw some 5.00 era type innings, and i saw the deal hernandez had with the twins.

so i threw it out as an example of what the yankees could have done over the winter. then the barrage of” constructive criticism” came about my suggestion.

so yeah, i’m having fun with this. any yankee fan, even V. who called hernandez “garbage” just last night, has to like livian beating the red sox to allow the twins to take 3 of 4 from the red sox."

Dunno if you saw my post last night - I was taking a look at his game log from the past couple years last night - guy is the epitome of feast or famine. His overall numbers usually end up garbage, but he's capable of giving you 8 innings of 1 run ball or 1 inning of 8 run ball, rofl.

I have to say, all in all, a high variance like that beats a mediocre 5 ERA guy anyday.

this is it!!! I've given up hope for this season.... I just don't see any bright spot on this team... this is an old team playing old... it is not built right... too many left handed hitters... too many first basemen... too many DHs.... too many softies without heart... there's absolutely no fight.... probably Joe Torre's influence already deeply embedded in them... LOSERS!!!!!
