Yankees (some of them) get some work in

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on May 12, 2008 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

The Yankees are engaged in optional batting practice at the moment at Tropicana Field.

Here’s how you can tell it’s optional. Alberto Gonzalez, Jose Molina, Chad Moeller and Shelley Duncan are the only players here.

Now before you think that the other guys are lazy dogs, sometimes extra hitting is too much hitting. If taking 500 swings in optional BP every day meant you would hit .330, everybody would do it. Players have their routines and getting to the park at 2:15 p.m. to take hacks is often not part of the routine.

  5. JoeT YANKEES 28/09 May 12th, 2008 at 3:02 pm

Eh – as long as they hit, I don’t care lol

Tough series starting tonight against the Rays.. excuse me – the FRANCHISE BEST Rays

  7. al arodien May 12th, 2008 at 3:02 pm

sorry if you think it “is not” ..

  8. Fredo Corleone May 12th, 2008 at 3:04 pm

Probably no accident that the guys who can’t hit are the ones getting the extra BP. Good for them though. Shows they want to stick in the bigs.

  9. Elizabeth--FarnsWORTH IT May 12th, 2008 at 3:09 pm

Good idea here for the guys not playing every day to get a few extra cuts in. I can’t wait to see ‘Berto playing again. He’s really a joy to watch at third base. Seems like his earlier blunders were nothing but nerves.

  10. PJH May 12th, 2008 at 3:10 pm

    nesessery?

Cano’s looking good lately – his at bats are much better quality than the last month+. He seems to be seeing the ball better.

Can’t argue with Giambi this past week either.

  13. al arodien May 12th, 2008 at 3:17 pm

pjh- as long as you understand what i mean! it is not “NECESARY” that you should mock me…………….

  14. al arodien May 12th, 2008 at 3:17 pm

    “NECESSARY”

  15. Fredo Corleone May 12th, 2008 at 3:18 pm

“Cano’s looking good lately – his at bats are much better quality than the last month+. He seems to be seeing the ball better.

Can’t argue with Giambi this past week either.”

Definitely two guys who didn’t want a rainout.

  16. mel May 12th, 2008 at 3:21 pm

Parlor game (Warning: I don’t know the answer)

Which current Yankee’s hit the most homeruns at the Tropicana?

  17. al arodien May 12th, 2008 at 3:21 pm

about gold glove in left. who won it last year??

  18. al arodien May 12th, 2008 at 3:22 pm

mel- i have to say a-rod

  19. Fran May 12th, 2008 at 3:22 pm

    Pete -any update on Alex?

  20. whozat May 12th, 2008 at 3:25 pm

    “Pete -any update on Alex?”

Yeah, he’s got one, but he figures no one cares so he’s not going to post it.

  21. whozat May 12th, 2008 at 3:26 pm

“about gold glove in left. who won it last year??”

I think there are just “OF” gold gloves, not ones that are specifically allotted to each position.

  22. Glenn May 12th, 2008 at 3:27 pm

They get in enough swings during regular batting practice but if certain guys want extra work under the watchful eyes of Kevin Long, then by all means go for it.

  23. Fredo Corleone May 12th, 2008 at 3:28 pm

“about gold glove in left. who won it last year??”

Don’t they just vote 3 OF’s rather than specific positions? Usually it’s 3 CF’s or 2 CF’s and a good RF who end up getting the GG’s. Last year was Sizemore, Ichiro and Hunter.

Ichiro and Hunter have gotten ‘em every year since ’01.

  24. Matt May 12th, 2008 at 3:29 pm

Happy to see Molina & Duncan there.

  25. Neil May 12th, 2008 at 3:29 pm

Alex probably has the most HR’s in Tropicana if his Texas and Seattle time is included. Otherwise, Giambi.

  26. JoeT YANKEES 28/09 May 12th, 2008 at 3:30 pm

2007 GG Winers = Ichiro, Hunter, Sizemore for the outfield

    Rest of the field was:

    Pudge
    Youkilis
    Polanco
    Beltre
    Cabrera
    Johan Santana

  27. mel May 12th, 2008 at 3:30 pm

    al arodien,

You were right, but not by much and probably not as many as you’d think.

    http://tinyurl.com/56vr3w

  28. al arodien May 12th, 2008 at 3:30 pm

whozat- then manny has no chance because if its by left field alone i dont see any major gold glove left fielder. but if it goes gy OF there are lots of great OF in AL

  29. longtime May 12th, 2008 at 3:31 pm

July 14th 2007 Yanks go to 45 – 44 and stay above .500 for the rest of the season. and this was a team that won 94 games. I think we should all relax and see how this plays out. As bad as we want to win Cashman and Little Stien want to win more. And guess what they( maybe Cash) know more about BB they we do……………

  30. Y's Guy May 12th, 2008 at 3:31 pm

maybe now that seattle realizes they are not even close to contending they will rethink the ichiro contract and move him (to ny)

  31. mel May 12th, 2008 at 3:32 pm

    Neil,

Check out the link ^^. I went back to ’96 (the beginning of the Golden Age of baseball) :)

  32. al arodien May 12th, 2008 at 3:33 pm

mel- wow i almost wrote cano because i remembered him hitting a lot of homers there!think 2 plus years he has 5 home runs there

  33. DMan May 12th, 2008 at 3:33 pm

    Shelley needs the work.

Be nice to see him mash a little like last year, if only to watch him energize the rest of the team.

  34. V May 12th, 2008 at 3:34 pm

Um, Ichiro’s a cash cow (in Seattle and in Japan). He’s easily worth more than his contract even if they went .250 here on out.

  35. Elizabeth--FarnsWORTH IT May 12th, 2008 at 3:34 pm

Alex has 16 career HR at the Trop.
    Giambi has 11
    Derek has 6
    Matsui has 7
    Johnny has 9
    Bobby has 4
    Posada has 7
    Cano has 6 (wow)

  36. Elizabeth--FarnsWORTH IT May 12th, 2008 at 3:36 pm

My source was baseball reference there. Didn’t realize MLB.com had different stats.

  37. Y's Guy May 12th, 2008 at 3:36 pm

v i realize its unlikely but there will have to be a new gm brought in and the team will have to be rebuilt, so im hoping, new gm, new plan….stranger things have happened.

  38. mel May 12th, 2008 at 3:37 pm

When did the Trop open? Girardi’s #24 on the list with (1) homerun.

  39. JMO May 12th, 2008 at 3:38 pm

yes, stranger things HAVE happened, like a dud like ensberg keeping a roster spot on the yankees.

  40. Elizabeth--FarnsWORTH IT May 12th, 2008 at 3:38 pm

Oh, looks like MLB’s stats were for players ONLY as Yankees. Alex’s stats don’t include Texas and Seattle. I didn’t think that was the question, though, Mel ;)

  41. Jeremy May 12th, 2008 at 3:38 pm

I wouldn’t want Ichiro with that contract to begin with.

  42. mel May 12th, 2008 at 3:38 pm

    Elizabeth,

Can you link? Yours sounds more realistic.

  43. Elizabeth--FarnsWORTH IT May 12th, 2008 at 3:40 pm

I went to each player’s page and looked at their career splits. It’s on each page.

  44. JMO May 12th, 2008 at 3:40 pm

id take ichiro with that contract over abreu with his

  45. Y's Guy May 12th, 2008 at 3:42 pm

ichiro, jeter, cano, arod, matsui, posada a great 1-6

  46. mel May 12th, 2008 at 3:43 pm

    Elizabeth, you’re right.

So Alex was the winner. Makes sense.

  47. raymagnetic â„¢ May 12th, 2008 at 3:43 pm

“id take ichiro with that contract over abreu with his”

Even though Abreu’s contract ends at the conclusion of this season?

  48. al arodien May 12th, 2008 at 3:44 pm

y’s guy – ill take out matsui he will be junk in afew years

  49. Y's Guy May 12th, 2008 at 3:44 pm

some1 has got to play RF next year and its not going to be ajax or tabata

  50. JMO May 12th, 2008 at 3:45 pm

nice idea, but he’s not going 2b available

  51. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 8 ) May 12th, 2008 at 3:45 pm

mel, since when has offense been the problem for the Knicks ?

What exactly made D’Antoni the all be it choice, D’Antoni landed w/ 3 special players in PHX. Nash, Amare and Marion before that D’Antoni in Denver as rookie coach 14-36 , w/o Nash he had PHX at 21-40, it’s been debated the only reason he landed in NY was because Jerry Reinsdorfh in Chicago was cheap. Paxson wanted D’Antoni in Chicago, D’Antoni wanted Chicago, Reinsdorfh sat on his hands, D’Antoni saw 24 million reasons w/ a possible 16 million buyout coming if he fails.

mel how do you feel knowing Donnie Walsh mislead Avery Johnson and Mark Jackson to think they were the next Knicks coach. Mark Jackson got a good word from Walsh and Jackson got such a good word he started hiring his assitant staff and planning on moving them to Trenton NJ, Avery Johnson was given such a good word they were already in contract negotiations, this was a flinch move, they changed the philosophy of what thier longterm plan was going to be.

I’m not a fan at all of this move, and you can’t seriously think trading this roster won’t bring back extending contracts and D’Antoni is not going to settle for a rebuilding effort, for that he would have gone to Chicago.

  52. Jeremy May 12th, 2008 at 3:45 pm

Abreu’s contract expires this year. Ichiro gets $17 million a year through 2012.

  53. Sara May 12th, 2008 at 3:45 pm

Did anyone see this post from the Muts blog in the Journal News??

“With the Mets at Yankee Stadium this week, it seems like a reasonable time to ask the question: Who are the most obnoxious fans in all of sports?

Philly fans have to rank right there with Yankees and Red Sox fans. If you have any other nominations, regardless of sport, let’s have them.”

Do Mut fans really have the b*lls to say that Yankee fans are the most obnoxious?? I never met a more obnoxious bunch of crybabies than Mut and Sux fans!!

  54. Fredo Corleone May 12th, 2008 at 3:46 pm

“id take ichiro with that contract over abreu with his”

Price wouldn’t stop at Ichiro’s contract. Also would cost prospects. Abreu cost only money.

  55. raymagnetic â„¢ May 12th, 2008 at 3:48 pm

“some1 has got to play RF next year and its not going to be ajax or tabata”

Yeah, it’s going to be bobby abreu on a 2-3 year contract. At least that’s what I think.

  56. JMO May 12th, 2008 at 3:48 pm

ichiro, damon and to a lesser extent matsui have the same type of swing, keeping the bathead in the hitting zone for as long as possible. cant say i can think of older guys who swung like that and how age affects that kind of hitter. seems like a guy like ichiro will be a weapon as long as his legs hold out. damon’s are starting to go but i think ichiro is in much better shape. hard to say about matsui.

  57. al arodien May 12th, 2008 at 3:49 pm

if we have a chance on getting ichiro we have to do it no matter how much it will cost even giving up some prospects! he is the best you will ever see patroling the outfield!

  58. mel May 12th, 2008 at 3:52 pm

    Brandon,

It was a problem for about 55 games this year.

I’m telling you to relax because there’s nothing you can do for it, and I can tell it’s raising your blood pressure even though you’re in your 20′s.

Yes, there’s the money. But there’s also a chance to work for one of the great franchises in sports. Maybe he likes the Yankees better than the Cubs or White Sox. Maybe he wants to prove that he can do it with burros instead of thoroughbreds.

Not cool of Walsh, but did Jackson really think he’d get the job when D’antoni and Johnson were there for the taking? Dire situations require drastic measures.

For one thing, the mood at MSG will change drastically. Sometimes all you need is positive thinking and a glimmer of hope. Just look at the Rays….

  59. jay destro May 12th, 2008 at 3:52 pm

    ichiro is not getting traded

  60. Y's Guy May 12th, 2008 at 3:53 pm

i like abreu, but he is going to want a 3-4 yr contract, which will leave them paying posada, mo and abreu a whole lotta money beyond thier primes. if bobby signs for 2 okay, otherwise its time to go shopping.

  61. al arodien May 12th, 2008 at 3:53 pm

    WE NEED SOME A-ROD NEWS!!!!

  62. Joe May 12th, 2008 at 3:55 pm

    al,
A-Rod is taking batting practice at the minor league complex, it was supposed to start at 3:30 according to ed price at the star ledger. Posada will play catch at the Trop.

  63. mel May 12th, 2008 at 3:57 pm

They’re not going to give Abreu 3 years. Alex really likes having Abreu in front of him, but unless he subsidizes Bobby I don’t see 3 years.

I can see a 2 year deal, but I think that Bobby push hard for more padding on the walls.

I love Abreu, but nothing is more comical than him bending over to get a ball at the base of the wall.

  64. al arodien May 12th, 2008 at 3:58 pm

    JOE- thanks

  65. Drew May 12th, 2008 at 3:58 pm

Tell Shelley he’d better start hitting. Comedy and team spirit will only take you so far.

  66. Francis The Praying Mantis May 12th, 2008 at 4:00 pm

    yanks should have signed fukudome

  67. Rob L. May 12th, 2008 at 4:02 pm

  68. raymagnetic â„¢ May 12th, 2008 at 4:02 pm

What position would he have played?

  69. Don Vito A. Ballamo May 12th, 2008 at 4:03 pm

    fukudome plays 1B or 2B..right ? (joke)

  70. al arodien May 12th, 2008 at 4:05 pm

rob l. if you belive he is a phony then its not news for you!!!!!! anyways as long as he has the most enemies i will know that he is the best player ever! HA HA!!

  71. Scott (Start Joba) May 12th, 2008 at 4:09 pm

Instead of signing Abreu, what about moving Melky to RF and trying Gardner at CF? Prior to this season Melky didn’t have the pop but it looks like he’s developing into a 20+ HR guy. He has the arm for it too.

Gardner at the top of the lineup could be a great leadoff guy. Nice .380+ OBP so far in AAA, got some steals…

That way we’re not paying Abreu for years beyond his prime and can go out and sign Big Tex to play 1b woohoo! :)

  72. Y's Guy May 12th, 2008 at 4:17 pm

i cant see them going into ST with an of of damon matsui and cabrera and gardener. unless someone misses alot of time this year and gardner gets a chance to prove he belongs. otherwise, they cant go into next ST thinking gardner is a starter.

  73. Y's Guy May 12th, 2008 at 4:19 pm

im not sold on mark (big G?) texiera being worth a monster deal. he’s not as good as giambi was at the same point in his career, but he’s going to get giambi money to play somewhere. i hope its not from the yankees.

  74. Francis The Praying Mantis May 12th, 2008 at 4:23 pm

um right field. instead of picking up bobby’s option, they could have signed Fukudome.

  75. rocket May 12th, 2008 at 9:18 pm

  76. CBR May 13th, 2008 at 11:21 am
