A-Rod had pain-free workout; Price next

May
16

Here’s the latest from the Associated Press on Alex Rodriguez:

Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez reported no problems with his strained right quadriceps Friday, one day after running the bases for the first since being sidelined last month.

A-Rod is scheduled to play in the first of three extended spring training games Saturday. Barring any setbacks, he is slated to rejoin the team Tuesday.

“Thumb’s up,” Rodriguez said after working out at the Yankees’ minor league complex.

Rodriguez has been out since April 28. In Saturday’s extended spring game against Tampa Bay minor leaguers, he will face left-hander David Price, the first overall selection in last year’s amateur draft. Price is comimg back from a strained left elbow, and is expected to join Class-A Vero Beach after the outing.

Rodriguez took 77 swings in batting practice, fielded 32 grounders and ran in the outfield Friday. When asked if he felt anything in his leg, Rodriguez said “nothing.”

Great news. I predict A-Rod will receive his loudest ovation at Yankee Stadium come Tuesday.

  2. Laura

A-Rod is so desperate to play. I hope that he’s not lying about how he feels.

  3. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 8 )

oh Alex, David Price is unhittable when he locates, good luck 8O

  4. S.A.- I still believe in this team. But they need to wake up.

    Good news. :)

  5. Glenn

Facing a pitcher with plus stuff is exactly what Alex needs. Even good swings against David Price will encourage Alex to know he’s almost back.

  6. jennifer

    Scorpio

    I agree with your prediction.

  7. Girardi on the DL

OH NO! A-Rod is paralized, he can’t feel his legs! I would be quite concerned that he felt nothing in his legs. The poor man.

    ;)

    G Love,

To carry over from the other thread, here is the chronology on the Santana talks:

Winter Meetings in December: When the Yankees finally included Hughes in their offer, they were ready to conclude the transaction. Their plan, if Smith accepted, was to sign Mike Cameron to a one year deal to play CF and replace Melky.

Instead of accepting it, the Twins went back to the Red Sox and shopped the deal. That, along with Pettitte deciding to return, made the Yankees re-think the deal because the Twins weren’t yet ready to pull the trigger.

On January 11, Cameron signed with the Brewers. That took the one player the Yankees were interested in signing (to a one year deal) to play CF in 2008.

They had no interest in Corey Patterson nor in paying 90 million dollars to Torii Hunter. The price the Angels eventually paid for his services.

Once the deal got jumbled again, and the offers were unacceptable, the Yankees (as well as the Red Sox) walked away from it.

As Hmmm stated, its unfair to lump all of us who are into the prospects as being blind followers.

The fact is, the game is changing. Its imperative every team, not just the Yankees, develop from within. Its a league wide trend. Everyone is doing it. Especially major market teams like the Yankees, Red Sox, Angels and Dodgers.

The only major market team not doing it this way is the Mets. They are a mess right now. I don’t think even the most jaded Yankee fan would want to trade places with the Mets right now.

Guys like Joba, Hughes, Montero, Jackson, Zach McAllister (check out what he is doing in Charleston this year), Betances, Melancon and Robertson are guys that are the envy of a lot of teams in baseball right now.

Will they all make it? I don’t know. But, its the first time in a long time the Yankees have had this many high end propsects at all levels of the system.

It gives them options they haven’t had in years. Some will get dealt for help at the big league level. They ALL won’t get dealt though. That’s the difference from the past.

In the long run, I believe the Yankees will look back on the Santana talks and be happy that deal wasn’t made. No pitcher is worth giving up that much talent for these days. Especially when you have the 138 million to the deal.

Its too rich even for the Yankees.

Let’s remember, the Red Sox also walked away from the deal. Its not like they have a dynasty up there. They walked away from having the Drysdale and Koufax (Beckett and Santana) of this generation.

Its not like the Red Sox didn’t need Santana.

I’m nervous. I think he should take another week just to be sure! And I’m serious.

  10. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

I’m just hoping they get the game in tonight!

  11. Amanda from La.

hope he is fully healed to play again…when he’s ready, we will gladly be ready!

  12. Bill from NJ

    Rebecca-

I think they’ll get the game in based off the radar that was shown in the other thread.

  13. SJ44

    Doreen,

If the reports are true, the latest MRI shows the injury is now a Grade 1 strain. That means, he’s able to rehab it.

He just has to be smart. Given what happened before, I have no doubt he (and the Yankees) will be smarter this time around. If he is not feeling anything its time for him to get it going.

Hopefully, he is back for Tuesday’s game and can get on one his hot streaks. If he can, he solves some problems with this team right now.

SJ another great post. Of course all the prospects will not make it and some will be traded but as you stated the key word is some.

SOme of the Yanks nuggest will be traded but the cupboards no longer will be entirely barren…

pray for rain so it is 1 less game played without Arod..
Man do I miss him, who would have ever thunk it!!!!!

  16. ant1-mussina

i bet jeter is loving AROD being gone. the little bugger just loves having the spotlight all to himself.

  17. ant1-mussina

pray for rain? what kind of crap is that? please go root for the marlins. real yankees fans don’t back down even when the team is down. stop being a wuss.

  18. Doreen

    SJ44 -

Thanks for the reassurance. Still nervous, but I’m always nervous about stuff in general! (For instance, I can’t watch when my husband climbs a ladder, and I practically have to do self-hypnosis when my family goes to an amusement park, since I don’t have access to xanax!)

  19. Russell NY

“i bet jeter is loving AROD being gone. the little bugger just loves having the spotlight all to himself.”

Are you kidding? AROD being gone combined with the Yankees’ offensive struggles just shows how much more of an important offensive piece AROD is to this team getting to the postseason.

The Mets went after Santana to repair public relations every bit as much as they needed a quality arm in their rotation.
After the meltdown fiasco of 2007, the Mets had still not made a move of significance during the offseason and after seeing the Yankees signing A-Rod, Jorge, and Mo, their fans were growing evermore restless and as the Wilpons sensed it, pulled the trigger at the expense of emptying out the farm tank.

  21. TKinDC

Anybody know if Girardi is going to be on w/ Fatso and Fruitloops today? when?

  22. Russell NY

    I don’t know what I like more… taking at-bats away from Ensberg or giving at-bats to AROD….

  23. Russell NY

Mets and “farm system” should never appear in the same blog post. They have been CLEANED out.

  24. Doreen

I have faith that Cashman and the Yankees will trade select prospects in the right deal, and I also believe they will be shoppers in the free agent market when the circumstances are favorable. (I guess I drank the koolade, kids.) My take on the Santana deal is that the Twins missed an opportunity when they shopped the Yankee deal around. It was a good original offer by the Yankees, made better when they switched out Kennedy to include Hughes. But it didn’t happen and I can’t wait until the Mets series is over so the Santana debate can fade into the background for a little while.

  25. SJ44

We are getting a taste of life without Arod and Posada, had both departed in free agency in the off-season.

I agree with Scorpio. I think Arod gets a huge ovation Tuesday night. I think fans are finally realizing just how much he means to this team. He is one of those few guys whose presence change the way pitchers work a lineup.

  26. YankeesTech

ant1-mussina, How many wins does mussina have?

  27. Maybenextyear

The yanks need to keep the kids. relax people! Its not even the end of the season. lots of picthers struggled in their rookie season. Hughes and Kennedy will be fine. It was the same thing with a-rod everyone wanted to get rid of him and then all of the sudden the same people who wanted to run him out of town are praising him.
But it seems to me that Girdardi isnt a big fan of Kennedy.

  28. randy l

i hate to ask a stupid question, but why would the yankees risk having their best player take rehab swings against a left handed towering flame thrower just coming off the disabled list himself?

you think he might be a little wild? if alex wants swings , i would have him hit against yankee minor leaguers who will be traded immediately if they hit him.

  29. ant1-mussina

i think it’s time to name AROD the captain. i mean the team is better with him than jeter. If jeter just left the team, AROD can be slotted into the SS role, and cash can find a power hitting 3B. But NO, jeter wants the yankees all for himself.

Jeter is a pea-shooter type hitter. little dink singles here and there and viola .300 AVERAGE! why dont you hit some doubles once in awhile “captain clutch”??? oh, it’s derek choker now, my bad.

  30. mel

    TK,

Thanks for the opportunity to share a joke I heard.

“We are getting a taste of life without Arod and Posada, had both departed in free agency in the off-season.”

You mean Miguel Tejada and Paul Loduca wouldn’t have sufficed?

  32. ant1-mussina

imagine the HUGE EGO HIT jeter is taking right now? he’s always straight faced in interviews but you know it’s getting to him. the team is just TERRIBLE right now without AROD. i think he nows deep inside that AROD is the superior player and the most vital piece of this team. The “captain jeter” crap needs to DIE RIGHT NOW. He is a greater pea-shooter compared to a lesser-pea shooter like Johnny Damon.

  33. Russell NY

“We are getting a taste of life without Arod and Posada, had both departed in free agency in the off-season.”

I am probably going to cry of happiness when he returns. I thought it was bad the past few years when the Yankees couldn’t pitch themselves out of a paper bag. At least then I would stick around a while to see if they can outscore the sucky pitchers. Now I just change the channel when the other team is up 1 run lol

  34. Drive 4-5

    SJ44,

I’ve been going to the Stadium since 1963 and this year I’m spending over $2,000 on tickets alone. I’m not including the cost of the 350 mile trip. I support the Yanks with my wallet through thick and thin and would hope my opinion counts for more than 2 cents with the Yankees, if not here.

I can tell you that the 4 million tickets sold this year are in large part due to this being the last season at the Stadium. They’ll fill to capacity next year at the new ballpark.

But the Yankees should not for one minute think that their attendance records will continue to be set when the buzz is off the new Stadium and if the team is not competitive for championships.

It’s all about entertainment value in New York. As soon as the Yankees are no longer entertaining, the attendance will drop. The Yanks have been a lot of fun to watch for the last 12 years and the fans came out to watch them. But all you have to do is look back a couple of years prior to this run to see that attendance will drop when the fun is over. The Yanks had a nice run in the mid 80’s. They were 2nd in attendance in 1986 - ‘88. Then as things went south they were 8th in ‘89′,9th in ‘90 and 11th by 1992.

New York isn’t Boston. There’s a lot more competition for the entertainment dollar in New York than Boston has with the Duck Tours. If the Yanks think they can be successful at the gate without putting out a first rate product they are sorely mistaken, especially in a down economy.

  35. Blargh

“I support the Yanks with my wallet through thick and thin and would hope my opinion counts for more than 2 cents with the Yankees, if not here. ”

Role reversal: Does the opinion of whoever pays you your money count regarding what you do with the money?

  36. SJ44

The team is competitive for championships. They are closer to first place now than they were at this time last year despite the problems so far this year.

No team, not the Yankees, not any team in any sport is competitive EVERY YEAR for championships.

This is where some Yankee fans don’t realize how lucky they have been since 1994. Every year since ‘94 (which could have been a championship year had Selig not cancelled the post-season), the Yankees have been in the championship hunt.

That’s pretty tough to do and too many fans blow that off as no big deal. It is a big deal.

That said, they need to retool the team. That’s what they are doing and that means they may take one step back to move two steps ahead.

That doesn’t mean they don’t want to win. It just means that in order to win they will make the kind of changes that take time to take hold.

  37. Rick

    Drive 4-5,

Been a Yankee fan since 1960 and your comments are right on the money. If the Yankees stink on the field rebuilding or not the attendance will drop after the newness of the new stadium wears off. The Yankees compete for entertainment dollars in NYC adn those dollars will go somewhere else if the Yankees are no good.

Great analysis finally someone with some sense of business and history.

  38. Drive 4-5

    SJ44,

Agreed. For those of us who survived the 60’s and 70’s teams we fully appreciate what we have experienced the last dozen or so years.

One of my favorite Stadium memories was being at the Stadium in August 1968 for a doubleheader against the Tigers. The Yanks swept the doubleheader with outfielder Rocky Colavito getting the win as the starting pitcher. That day marked the first time since the beginning of the 1965 season that the Yankees went over the .500 mark. Back then it was hard to imagine success like the Yanks have had on this run.

  39. Rick

    Drive 4-5,

Remember going to Yankee stadium in 1972. Box seats were $16 and my wife and I were right behind first base. Enough down memory lane but in those years of losing the yankees had problems drawing a million fans.

  40. Drive 4-5

    Rick,

    Excactly!

  41. Rick

Fortunately, George Steinbrenner came along for the Yankees who believed in winning and building the team. Yes he made mistakes but the Yankees would have never had the run they had without him and his deep pockets.

  42. Ian

Anybody know where and when AROD is playing this extended game? I’m in Tampa and would love to see it.
