Fortunately, George Steinbrenner came along for the Yankees who believed in winning and building the team. Yes he made mistakes but the Yankees would have never had the run they had without him and his deep pockets.

Drive 4-5,

Remember going to Yankee stadium in 1972. Box seats were $16 and my wife and I were right behind first base. Enough down memory lane but in those years of losing the yankees had problems drawing a million fans.

SJ44,

Agreed. For those of us who survived the 60's and 70's teams we fully appreciate what we have experienced the last dozen or so years.

One of my favorite Stadium memories was being at the Stadium in August 1968 for a doubleheader against the Tigers. The Yanks swept the doubleheader with outfielder Rocky Colavito getting the win as the starting pitcher. That day marked the first time since the beginning of the 1965 season that the Yankees went over the .500 mark. Back then it was hard to imagine success like the Yanks have had on this run.

Drive 4-5,

Been a Yankee fan since 1960 and your comments are right on the money. If the Yankees stink on the field rebuilding or not the attendance will drop after the newness of the new stadium wears off. The Yankees compete for entertainment dollars in NYC adn those dollars will go somewhere else if the Yankees are no good.

Great analysis finally someone with some sense of business and history.

The team is competitive for championships. They are closer to first place now than they were at this time last year despite the problems so far this year.

No team, not the Yankees, not any team in any sport is competitive EVERY YEAR for championships.

This is where some Yankee fans don't realize how lucky they have been since 1994. Every year since '94 (which could have been a championship year had Selig not cancelled the post-season), the Yankees have been in the championship hunt.

That's pretty tough to do and too many fans blow that off as no big deal. It is a big deal.

That said, they need to retool the team. That's what they are doing and that means they may take one step back to move two steps ahead.

That doesn't mean they don't want to win. It just means that in order to win they will make the kind of changes that take time to take hold.

"I support the Yanks with my wallet through thick and thin and would hope my opinion counts for more than 2 cents with the Yankees, if not here. "

Role reversal: Does the opinion of whoever pays you your money count regarding what you do with the money?
