ham fighter

>> if you think cash comes back if they miss the playoffs, you are way off base. no ws in 7 years, 3 yrs getting bounced in the 1st round and then a missed playoff and you think he will be back? are you even from new york?

I'm from New York 2008. Apparently you still think it's New York 1988. Times have changed - you should proably try to keep up.

That's a sweet illustration. I'd never seen or heard of Chris Brown's stuff before. Thanks for the post, Pete. I grew up doodling all sorts of caricatures in hopes of being a cartoonist. Instead, I've worked more in fine arts and realism, and find that when I try to get back to cartooning and caricaturing I'm not as good anymore. It's definitely a different set of skills and way of thinking, and every time I see something cool like that it makes me want to get out my sketchbook. I was actually lucky enough to meet Ed Murawinski of the Daily News when I was bartending last year and he was nice enough to give me some really cool Yankee prints he had done. If you ever run into Chris tell him his work is appreciated.

Reminds me of when a friend of mine reminisce about the Weaver trade; he said that around that time, he would be praying for the Yankees to get him. And then it turns out the way it did...oh well, c'est la vie.

"He took a boat load of awful NL pitchers not realizing how mediocre they would look in the NL"

except for Weaver, who was excellent and getting better every year.

in the AL.

not disputing your larger point, but man, i still don't understand what happened to Jeff Weaver.

that trade looked so smart at the time. his contract was set up in a way that it was backloaded to correspond with guys like Clemens and Wells coming off the books.

he was going to be the young RHer to anchor the staff for years. he was 25 and had ERA's leading up to the trade of:

5.55 - 164 IP rookie year
4.32 - 200 IP in his second year
4.08 - 229 IP
3.52 121.7 IP at the trade deadline

he was 25 and had great stuff. he even put up a 4.04 ERA with the Yankees after the trade.

then the next year, 5.99 ERA.

what happened?

Excellent stuff fellas. Too bad Cashman didn't get his way with Vlad Glad. I remember people worrying about his back at the time. The "experts" were muttering about how violent his swing was, and that he'd be a significant injury risk. So much for that.

Giambi leads the team in homeruns. The problem is not that he hits too few homeruns but that he hits too few singles and doubles.

There is no doubt he has miscalculated with some pitching choices. No question about it.

The question is, do you fire him for that or do you bring in someone to assist him in evaluating pitching in a better way?

Ham fighter,

Ownership these days rarely think like emotional fans. They look at an entire body of work, then decide what's best for the organization.

Its a business decision for them. Regardless of what's said publicly.

There are teams that have gone a lot longer than 7 years without a championship whose GM's aren't fired.

There are also other teams that haven't been to the post-season in years yet still keep their jobs.

The "are you from NY" stuff doesn't fly. Especially when the ownership of this team is based in Tampa. I guess they "don't get it" either because they aren't from NY.

Cashman would have a choice of multiple jobs in baseball if he chose to comeback. If he was that bad, he wouldn't have choices.

Stevie Wonder can see the declining skills of Giambi and Damon.
Expecting either to fill the loss of Alex and Jorge is ludicrous. They can't, they haven't, and they won't. There just isn't any resilience to tap from.

Defense of Cashman you made some good points, however he has been AWFUL with pitchers. He took a boat load of awful NL pitchers not realizing how mediocre they would look in the NL
