Rasner is skipped. I do not like that move from Joe. I would rather skip Kennedy.
great news 1 less game without arod and jorge..
yes….
i guess girardi wants pettitte and wang on regular rest..
I understand him not wanting his vets to get off their schedule.
Something’s up with Pettitte. Moose is on the loose. Razzzner’s sizzzzling. Ian’s learning.
We really need to straighten out the rotation to take advantage of the matchups.
Wang
Pettitte
Moose
Rasner
Joba
After the ASB.
Remember, once upon a time, Moose thrown off his schedule was recipe for a disaster? I like the new & improved Moose.
I don’t know why they’re throwing this Purcey kid out there, but he’s getting killed. 8-0 Phillies over the Jays thru 2.1 innings.
Is there a chance Kennedy will be sent down again? It doesn’t seem like he worked out what he needed to, despite what he says.
cool beans
Let’s get a win tomorrow. Hopefully we see good Andy and not his evil twin-bad Andy
“Is there a chance Kennedy will be sent down again? It doesn’t seem like he worked out what he needed to, despite what he says.”
Then you weren’t watching. His big problem early on was being afraid of bats and not throwing strikes. The other day, he was attacking the zone, he just didn’t have anything other than his FB and his change working. Still has to figure out how to succeed better on days like that, but at least it seems like, when his other pitches are working better, he’ll be attacking the zone again.
I hope Andy can figure it out this outing, but I like the match up of Santana and Pettitte better than Santana and Rasner.
whozat,
since you were watching, did you notice that Ian’s a little thicker now?
gardner has 2 SB a walk and a single in the first 5 innings of game 1 tonight…
he definitely has a lot of energy….
OT-
Let’s go NY Cavs of Cleveland!
Maybe while it’s raining they can grab a bite to eat? Oh—it’s their lack of hunger that is keeping them down? We take the piss outta Hank here:
http://grittyandclutch.blogspot.com/2008/05/analysis-of-nutritional-intakes-impact.html
I think the Yankees are more willing to allow Kennedy to find his way than having Igawa up again. Kennedy didn’t do as bad as before, but he will need to do something better his next outing.
I think with Rasner doing well, it takes some pressure off of Kennedy. Now if only Pettitte would start doing well the rotation will be fine.
Cool, I’ll get to see Santana tomorrow.
btw does anyone know if he has an opt-out clause? He sure couldn’t be happy with the clubhouse combustion going on over there and the manager he signed up for will probably be gone any minute now.
Girardi didn’t have a crystal ball, but wish he had skipped IPK yesterday had he known about the weather today. Rasner would have had a better chance keeping that game close, and IPK really could a couple more games in Scranton.
Maybe Dan Giese should get a harder look. This is his 7th start to go with three relief appearances. With five scoreless innings under his belt tonight, the ERA at SWB is down to 1.01.
Kind of hard to argue with that success. Give him a chance, why not?
I thought the idea behind this season was to let the kids learn.
I know Kennedy hasn’t exactly shined in his few starts this year, but i can handle losing with forward motion… sending Kennedy down is NOT forward motion!!
Let’s not get spoiled Yankee fans …
NOT making the playoffs this year would be ok with me as long as we continue to DEVELOP OUR KIDS!!!
I suffered through the 80’s and early 90’s … i know what it was like, unlike 80% of today’s yankees fans
(those of you who lived it, consider yourselves exempt from this comment)...
but the Yankees gave us something that makes us ‘The Luckiest Fans On Earth’ ... a dynasty … FOUR out of FIVE years with a World Series and the Playoffs EVERY YEAR since 95.
C’mon now .. i think we can deal with taking a step backwards in order to take two steps forward.
..and think of the the additional benefit to the Yankee’s not making the playoffs this year … SO MANY BANDWAGON YANKEE fans will FINALLY jump off and leave this team to the fans who actually KNOW about this team!
I say let ‘em take their lumps!
What is the mets rotation for this weekend. Obviously Johan is tomorrow, but who is sunday.
“OT-
Let’s go NY Cavs of Cleveland!”
Nice sentiment but the Cavs winning is nothing more than window dressing. They couldn’t win in Boston if the NBA allowed them to play while armed with knives.
Jennifer
Pete has it posted above. Perez.
on the yanks/ met game 1997 on SNY the yankee lineup had mark whiten, chad curtis, and girardi.. they lost to cleveland that yr. after winning the championship the yr. before!!!!!
I thought the Yanks always had 9 all stars in the lineup??????
I forgot they had a great starting staff and a great pen….....
Jennifer, Pete said Perez for sunday.
Thats cause he just added it. I know I am losing it, but I’m not that bad.
I’m just losing it cause of work, not cause I am old.
have you decided what to ask Moose tomorrow??
I doubt we’ll see Kennedy on Thursday 5/22. That would mean that Wang would only start once in the 9 game stretch from 5/20 to 5/28. It would be smarter to push Kennedy back a few days, in fact I think they should send IPK down until 6/3. Call up White or someone for the start on 5/24.
Excited that I get to see the Ace match up tomorrow I have a feeling that Andy P will pitch a gem he usually does in the big spots.
Have not had a chnace to read through the earlier comments but another must listen for Moose today as he was a guest on WFAN with Mike and Dog. You can listen via WFAN.com (g to podcasts, go to mike and the mad dog)
so i’m watching the Yankees/Mets game on SNY (from 97) – Gary Thorne said that Tino probably won’t ever make an all-star team because of the people around him that get a lot more publicity…. isn’t 97 when he won the HR derby?? lol
Toronto/Philly game tonight. Werth has hit 3 HR’s for 8 RBI’s and it’s still the 6th inning.
That’s a nice week in a night!
Dee- No I haven’t
Maybe if he’d thought about coming back next year, or if he’s seen the inside of the new stadium.
thanks gayle!!
PinstripedPlayer @8:20…
I’ve been with them from the great days in the 50s’. The good and the very bad, this is nothing like the very bad days. Good days will come again, they always do. 27/08.
good thing aout nights like these is minor league baseball talk
Betances is sitting in the 95-96 mph tonight
Miranda hit a HR
Austin Jackson doubled off the wall just missed his first AA HR, he is 3 for 4 w/ 4 RBIs tonight
and Reegie Corona’s bat stays hot he’s 2 for 3 w/ another XBH
Jose Tabata is 0 for 2 w/ a BB
Chase Wright is a bit off tonight
7.0 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 4 K’s
GO/AO 7-10
and as I wrote this Jackson just homered !
Evening all.
I have to say, since no one was at the game, my dad, brother, cousin and I had a luxury box to ourselves…it was amazing. But baseball would have been better.
Oh well.
Austin Jackson HR in the 7th inning for Trenton was a 2 out Grand Slam
man – now we are going to get Kennedy for the game we’re going to on Thurs!!! UGH
Well Igawa is in Major League form. He has pitched an inning and given up 2 runs on a home run.
Don’t be so sure Kennedy will start Thursday. They can move the rotation around no?
Rebecca you had tickets to a luxury box?
How would you like to face Charleston in a series and go Macallister – Betances – Heredia WOW!!!
It is amaxing they are doing as well as they are with 3/4 of the starting lineup on the DL.
Go AJack. It would be nice for Tabata and Austin to be hot simultaneously.
Is Giese for real – is he lightning in a bottle for a bit this season. Clearly he isn’t this good but can he help the big club in some capacity while he is throwing so well?
I hope so, Jennifer, originally it was supposed to be either Wang or Pettite – it’s mom’s only game of the season and we have great seats!
If they skip Kennedy, Andy would be on regular rest. So it is all about how much confidence they have in Kennedy. Thursday is against Baltimore, Maybe they’d want to push him back a day to face Seattle, after all Seattle is a worse team.
Let’s hope that that’s what they decide to do (esp since it’s another AL East team)...apparently my sister wants to see Rasner (we were at the debut) – i’d like our best chance to see a win
Die Jensen Lewis, Die Cleveland Indians, Die now!
Jennifer: Yeah. My cousin works at a liquor store and one of the suppliers has a box. We don’t go often-
usually only once a year-but it’s often.Betances 6.0 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 0 ER 3 BB, 8 K’s
GO/AO 3-7 (not a good thing), he sat in the hig 90’s tonight, hit 95 and 96 plenty of times.
YES!!! Kennedy’s my hands-down favorite of the three, and I’ll be at the game on Thursday!
I’ve met him once (he’s a sweetie) but I love watching him pitch.
BTW Jay Bruce hit a homer off Igawa in the first inning of the second game of the double header in SWB, lets be honest are we surprised
Very cool Rebecca!!
Well Igawa has lost it.
So Igawa is being Igawa.
Oh the pain
Well at least Griese went the way in his game, so if they have to go to the pen, they will be okay.
SA Igawa has 3 K’s and a BB vs Cincy’s minor league club
Dan Haren. What a loser. Nothing has changed since 2006 ALCS.
Come on Bondie, shut them down.
Sorry, but Kennedy is not ready for MLB competition. His one start at SWB is not enough to “season” him for MLB hitters. His return start against Tampa Bay proves it.
Kennedy, (and Hughes for that matter) are one/two years away from legitimate MLB starters.
Definitely a mistake to enter the 2008 Season with two – and possibly three (Joba) – inexperienced starters when Post Season is your minimal goal.
Wake up, Cashman!
uh ooh, Bondie just lost his perfect game.
Well, Jay Bruce is a rather highly touted prospect as well, right?
DelaRosa was going good until Jeffrey Cunningham’s 2 run double so Charleston is down 3-1
Ha!
How are you liking that, Dan “AL ERA 4.70” Haren?
Is there a more overrated pitcher in the Majors than Dan Haren?
DE-FENSE!
DE-FENSE!!
GO CAVS!!!!!
Next best thing to having the Yanks game cancelled and thus not missing it – watching the end of the Cavs-Celts game with the Cavs leading.
Life is good.
Nancy Drew’s brother is 0-2
Bondie has no-no through 4
THERE WILL BE A GAME 7 !!!
Brandon, now the Cavs have to find a way to win in craptown USA…
ER-
Andy Pettite fits that bill
alright Utah lets go
Has a NBA team ever won the whole thing without winning a road game in the playoffs?
I was thinking more along the line of DicyK
Total BONEHEAD move if they really skip Rasner and let IPK pitch….really STUPID !
With Brandon Webb, Arizona is nothing more than a one-trick pony.
[ BTw, has anyone seen the movie “one trick pony?” ]
Has the same player ever made all 3 outs of the same inning in major league history?
no-no no longer for Bondie
wat is bondie
short for Bonderman
Or as they call him in Detroit, Yankee Killer 2006
good bye utah mormons.
“Has a NBA team ever won the whole thing without winning a road game in the playoffs?”
Very good question!
that would be a big negativo on the Celtics, or a team winning a championship w/o ever winning a game on the road in the playoffs.
in fact, i believe there has never been a team whose won a conference title w/o winning a road game.
i think i remember reading that from Dan Shanoff, the guy who used to do the Daily Quickie on ESPN Page 2.
Why cant there be a double headed tomorrow since fox is not picking up the game
here’s what Shanoff found… “History is against them (Celtics): No team has ever done it. Actually, no team has ever won a conference title without winning on the road.
Even more interesting: No team has ever gotten beyond the conference semis without winning at least one playoff game on the road.”
from his blog on the Sporting News website.
“good bye utah mormons.”
don’t close that casket yet
Fox would own rights to one of the games if they did a doubleheader, I think.
They’re not doing Sunday because if a day game bleeds into the night game, there are broadcast issues.
“that would be a big negativo on the Celtics, or a team winning a championship w/o ever winning a game on the road in the playoffs.”
Not the best way to go about it, but only one team can do it and that’s the team that earned home court advantage by being better than everyone else over 82 games.
Kobe “The Rapist” Bryan—- nice looking and appropriate signs in the crowd.
“Why cant there be a double headed tomorrow since fox is not picking up the game”
Too difficult to work around FOX’s exclusivity period.
you’re just mad he got away with it and you can’t.
Re: Jairo Heredia at Charleston. The 18 year old has been on the DL the past few weeks.
Giese tossed a 7-inning shutout tonight. Although not on the 40-man, you have to look at the 3-2, 0.96 soon. Since replacing the injured Alan Horne in Scranton’s rotation, Giese has been superb. A pleasant surprise there.
IPK is not ready to face MLB’s games yet.
If yankees don’t want to loss too much, they must to sent IPK to AAA.
The Coaches and Cashman aren’t smart.
Predictably, yankees will not enter the post season this year.
if they really wanted to, they could do a day/night DH tomorrow, with the first game at 1, then let the fox game play at 4, and play the 2nd game at 8.
but both teams get an advantage with the unexpected off day today, because the yankees have one less game to play without ARod, and the mets have a DH on Tues with the Braves.
my guess is that neither team really wanted to play in the rain today, nor did they want to double it up this weekend.
are you F…ing kidding me that wasn’t a foul !!
“ER-
Andy Pettite fits that bill”
Sadly, this is somewhat true.
does giese have good stuff?
DWILL !
“Giese tossed a 7-inning shutout tonight. Although not on the 40-man, you have to look at the 3-2, 0.96 soon.”
He’s a 31 year old non-prospect. Even IPK can pitch successfully in the International League. It is a league very favorable for pitchers. Stats from the IL rarely translate in the bigs.
“Why cant there be a double headed tomorrow since fox is not picking up the gameâ€
Too difficult to work around FOX’s exclusivity period.
I don’t think that’s the case. Especially if it were a day/night DH.
“does giese have good stuff?”
He’s 31, has 650 minor league innings, almost all of which were in relief and 9 1/3 MLB innings. I’d guess no.
OK then he should be released.
Fredo:
Aaron Small was a 33 year old non-prospect in 2005.
Wilcy Moore was a 30 year old rookie in 1927. Check what he did.
You never know. At least give the guy a chance.
You broke my heart, Fredo. You broke my heart.
Giese is a career minor leaguer who had a cup of coffee with the Giants last year. He’s not a prospect, but given the right opportunity, he could provide quality innings as a long man in the pen, or out of a spot start if needed.
i wouldnt count on any substantive from him, but he’s proven he deserves a shot over guys like Igawa or Marquez at this point.
he’s a long reliever at best, but his GO/AO are very impressive
The bullpen is more stronger.
It’s the time to sent JOBA to the ratation.
Yankees isn’t the evil empire, because he gave a lot of chances to Phil and IPK.
Honestly,the chances is too much.(Phil:6 times loss;IPK 7times loss)
The future of Yankees is sad.
Odom is clearly FLOPPING WTF !
REF YOU SUCK !
“Aaron Small was a 33 year old non-prospect in 2005.”
Indeed he was. However, two things are true: 1) They lucked out on that and 2) Unlike ‘05, they may have some more appealing options than pitching’s answer to Crash Davis.
so is wilkins a legit lefty or a GCL pitcher?
Actually the future pitching-wise is quite good if you are willing to wait.
Giving Giese a shot while giving the youngsters some more time may not be a bad move. There are very fine youngsters that just need time.
Hughes and Kennedy could be two of them. Alan Horne, Dan McCutchen, Dellin Betances, Eric Hacker, Zach McAllister, and Jairo Heredia are some others. Chase Wright is doing well at AA. He obviously was rushed last year. He had less than five starts above AA when he was rushed to the majors last year. Jason Jones is doing well at AA (6-0, 2.20). I haven’t even discussed relivers like David Robertson, Mark Melancon, Humberto Sanchez (soon to be coming back from TJ surgery), JB Cox, Anthony Claggett, Kevin Whelan…some will make it, some won’t. But there are some nice arms there, and some will be good trade bait…either at this trade deadline or in the off-season.
Imagine how awesome it would be to see an arena of 20,000 all wearing Kobe “The Rapist” Bryant T-shirts and holding the same signs. Awesome!
“betances is trade bait. he can’t throw a strike to save his life.”
saids who ?
“betances is trade bait. he can’t throw a strike to save his life.”
Dice-K Betances! He’s probably the most elite arm of the Yankees minor league lot. Horne and McCutchen are low end of the rotation types at best in the bigs. Betances, with development can be a high end of the rotation guy. Brackman too, but both those guys are a few years away.
Fredo:
Ever HEAR of Wilcy Moore?
How about HOF Dazzy Vance? He came up to the majors, didn’t do anything, developed arm trouble, then didn’t hit it big until he was 31. Sometimes you do catch something.
I’d rather see Giese than Igawa. I think anyone would. The problem is the 40-man. The question is how ready some of the other youngsters are. You don’t want to rush any too early, which is why Giese could be an option, esp. if he continues to pitch to the ERA he is putting up.
Reward performance. The guy has done well. If his ERA is still under 1.50 (right now 0.96), consider the guy. What do you have to lose? If he has a bad start or two, so be it.
But maybe he gives you five or six decent innings and keeps the team in the ballgame. That’s all you can ask.
Check out his numbers on MILB.com. He’s doing all you can ask from him. He can’t do more than that.
maybe this is why Kennedy stinks so far
http://tinyurl.com/64d872
saids who ?
Brandon, the kid is averging 7 BB’s per nine innings. He’s got to harness the stuff or he’s Dan Cabrera when he grows up.
Betances is VERY J.R. Richard-like. From the height to the fastball to the K’s to the control.
Go to baseball-reference.com. Check out how many walks J.R. gave up. Guy was still dominating. Beatances reminds me of J.R. in many ways.
I’ve seen McCutchen. Like him. Not saying he’ll be an ace, but like him.
Who’d have thought Wang would turn out to win 19 back to back?
Fredo:
Harness his stuff? That’s what the minor leagues are for. Betances is 20 years old and still very much developing.
Look at Matsuzaka.. he’s 27, pitched professionally since he was 18 and in the majors now and STILL walks the ball park. His walk rate is horrendous.
Betances will have plenty of time to retool his command, but his stuff is elite. Relax buddy or stick to judging major leaguers only..
you can afford to walk a couple of batters a game when you have the strikeout stuff like Betances has.
his biggest issue is repeating his delivery, and remaining healthy. the control will come.
“The question is how ready some of the other youngsters are.”
Mike, the alternatives are not youngsters. Rasner is 27. White is 27. Horne and McCutchen are 25. No elite arms in this group, but they’ve all enjoying some minor league success (again in heavy pitcher’s leagues) and should already possess the maturity level necessary not to get down after a rough start.
Horne is not elite, but his stuff is only a tier below Joba’s. If he were used otu of the bullpen his stuff plays up even more. “Elite” arms do not come in three’s and four’s in a farm system. They are rare or else every team would be pumping out Joba’s.
Where’s the elite arms in the Red Sox farm system? Clay Buchholz is now a big leaguer.. so he does not count
Melancon
Horne
Betances
Brackman
Sanchez
all very special arms. two of which have chances of being legit #1’s in Betances and Brackman
MLB isn’t the spring training place.
The Yankees games make me great disappointed so far.
“Betances will have plenty of time to retool his command, but his stuff is elite.”
Um, yeah. That’s sort of what I meant when i typed “he is the system’s most elite arm and with development can be a high end of the rotation guy”. I’ll type it slower next time.
thanks Fredo.. type it slower.
I didn’t see that comment obviously. But maybe you should type it slower so you can rethink the next mindless thing you write
so Santana is going to get embarrassed out there tomorrow by us, I can feel it!
“Where’s the elite arms in the Red Sox farm system? Clay Buchholz is now a big leaguer.. so he does not count”
AA I guess. Masterson and Bowden are rated higher by Baseball America than anyone the Yanks have in AA or AAA. I know Masterson made a big league spot start and held the Angels to a run over 6 innings. He’s struggled some since going back to AA, but he’s only 23 now and will likely be up next year. Bowden is only 21 and just beat McCutchen in Trenton last week. Have no clue what they have in A and A+.
Fredo and we whipped Masterson last night
YEH BABY !
damn Utah frontcourt wake up !
there’s no way he passes my brother Barry Bonds!!!
“Horne is not elite, but his stuff is only a tier below Joba’s. If he were used otu of the bullpen his stuff plays up even more. “Elite†arms do not come in three’s and four’s in a farm system. They are rare or else every team would be pumping out Joba’s.”
Horne’s stuff is light years behind Joba’s. You are correct though, elite arms do not come in bunches. In fact Joba is a once every 10-15 year arm. What Cashman has done well is have good depth at AA/AAA. Not elite guys, but guys who can adequately fill in for those 4-5 types who get hurt or can’t get the job done. Then in Brackman and Betances he has potentially top end of the rotation guys 2-3 years down the road.
thank you finally a real charge call
Masterson is not an ELITE arm and nowhere near it. He is a very effective sinker baller and probably headed to the bullpen and Bowden is not elite either. I was at the game and though Masterson has a great sinker, he throws it 87-90mph with barely any offspeed pitch ability. Bowden is having a good year now but has been totally inconsistent and way too reliant on a fastball which lost velocity when I saw him. Another guy who lacks the complimentary pitches to even be close to an ELITE arm.
another FLOP
Fredo have you ever seen Alan Horne in person? I’m not talking about reading through a BaseballAmerica report. Horne’s stuff can be devastating at times and though he lack’s consistency, his pure stuff – plus fastball, absurd power curve, good slider and good changeup – is not “light years” below Joba.
Imagine Yankees – Dodgers/Torre this year in world series, and Dodgers win first 3 and Yankees come back to win next 4 like the Red Sox did to us, what will they say to Torre as manager. (problem is Kevin Brown isn’t pitching for the Dodgers but hey don’t worry Proctor will somehow blow it in game 7).
Arod not clutch, gets injured when team is down.
meanwhile Jetes 100 % can’t carry the team above .500 ^
what’s your point
Boozer has been a disgrace in game 6, he should have just stayed in the hotel.
thank you Milsap you Okur and DWILL came to play ! Boozer you bum you wanna help for once
Jeter tries, Arod doesn’t, he’s a demon evil retard.
ohhhhhh you must be 11 yrs. old
Yeah A-Rod is a great player but not a clutch player and a little streaky too. me personal would like to see him opt out again if possible, he might be the best player in the game but he’s still a looser, like we say on the Mets even when they win they’re still loosers.
MILSAP !
I’m 12, my father is sleeping so I use his laptop (hehe) I like the yankees but not Arod, I like Jeter all my friends in Baseball league are talking how to become the next Jeter.
they might actually have a chance now w/ Boozer out
to Alex being Alex:
why do you have such a weird handle name, and what are the initial words you’re writing.
What means MILSAP ?
Hey, how about you write INICE for: I Need Ice Cream Emergency.
Brandon is a funny guy don’t ask him what he meant when he writes something.
Brandon is a funny guy don’t ask him what he meant after he writes something.
I need a BJ
I need the Blue Jays to start beating the Red Sox and BJ Ryan to be good.
I need a BJ Upton on my team.
You need a BJ or BJ Upton on your team?
damn, using BJ Upton for a BJ
wow lakers win, 2 3 pt shots front and inside of the rim.
The Jazz have a hell of a team to look forward to, and a helluva franchise PG, if Boozer would have showed up tonight they could have done something. Hats off to the Lakers, gutsy win.
http://www.portfolio.com/views/columns/the-windup/2008/05/16/Yankee…;
The deepest, darkest secret harbored by the New York Yankees first baseman is that whenever he is in a prolonged hitting funk, he wears a gold lamé, tiger-stripe thong under his uniform. “I only put it on when I’m desperate to get out of a big slump,” he confides.
Over Giambi’s checkered career in the Bronx, he has left the “golden thong” in the lockers of slumping teammates Derek Jeter, Bernie Williams, Johnny Damon
nypd113th, you need help.
.
IPK is now the Igawa of the Yankees. If you are stupid enough to trot him out there again, expect him to give up as many runs as he pitches. If you think that is a formula for winning a ballgame, you need help, too. The Yankees will totally be admitting that they are NOT playing for the playoffs this year if they continue to let slugs like Igawa and IPK ( and YES, IPK IS a slug this year ) when they could either be skipping the spot in the rotation and leaving the other 4 pitchers on regular rest OR giving someone else in the minors that has not SHOWN (yet) that they STINK as a 2008 MLB Yankee Pitcher a chance to win a few ballgames in the #5 Starter spot. I agree with Pete, in that you have to give Giese a shot. He has all the potential of being an “Aaron Small” or performing like Rasner has so far this year. If the Yankees knowingly pitch people that are giving them little chance to win the game and thus, losing more ground to the leaders, even early in the season, they are NOT fooling me. Hank can spout off all he wants, but if the “product” they put on the field is decidedly inferior, then they are simply letting people get beat up on the mound so that they can get some MLB starts under their belt and that is NOT a sign of a team that is trying to win THIS YEAR. But, they’ll never come out and say it, because they are trying to sell tickets, but this is one fan that is not that stupid to “buy” what the Yankees would be “selling” this year.
dont really get why ian is going thursday when you could go back to pettitte and wang (thursday and friday) and push the #5 spot back to saturday.
nypd113th delights in the fantasy of wearing the golden thong on his head.
Anyone going to today’s game?
Really hope the Yanks embarass Santana..and not the other way around. I like the match up better.haha. Andy is usually pretty good in the spotlight. Go Yanks!
http://zellspinstripeblog.wordpress.com/
Kevin
Jennifer, still me. But I’m sure there are many others from here heading to the stadium probably in traffic already or something. I’m picking through my Yankee wardrobe and listening to Girardi’s interview on M&MD yesterday on my computer as we speak!
Doesn’t it look like a gorgeous day out?? GO YANKS!!!!!!!!
that is waaaaayyy too much information about Giambi. Can you imagine the signs in the stadium from now on? Why on earth would he admit that? I’m sure his teammtes appreciate his sharing of that information, lol.
Listening to Joe’s interview on M&MD yesterday….he said “you try but you can’t be something you don’t have the parts to be. You try but you can’t be getting runs like the tampa bay rays…”
That sounds really really sad to me that our team has been reduced to that. I hope today is the day we turn the pages. But I have the feeling it’ll be more that in two weeks, that’s 10 days or so after Alex comes back and starts putting everyone in their places!
Ian Kennedy a slug? wow.
I really can’t believe I’m sometimes a fan of the same team as some of the folks I see on here.
Ian Kennedy skyrocketed through the minor leagues, and is now taking his lumps at the major league level. He has to be at the major league level because this team threw money away over the years at pitchers the caliber of Jaret Wright and Carl Pavano. A team that got bailed out one year by the likes of the forementioned Aaron Small and Shawn Chacon, and were then dumb enough to think that those guys were anything more than lightning in a bottle. Ian Kennedy struggles at the major league level, not because he’s a mistake, but because of the mistakes this team made throwing money at supposed better veteran pitching.
So we now have to retool this team, and the right way to do it involves building around players we’ve developed. it involves struggling until you find the right mix. It may even involve not making the playoffs this year and hovering over .500.
If you can’t handle that, please find another team to root for. look…..the Tampa Bay Rays seem pretty ready! you can jump on now that they’re almost done building and skip the tough part….
Rhapsody and Don, I was just wondering what your take is on this unusual and little known Yankee tradition?
“That sounds really really sad to me that our team has been reduced to that.”
He didn’t that the Yankees can’t score as many runs as the Rays. He meant they can’t score runs in the same way as the Rays do, because the team is built differently. They’re faster. The Yanks are more patient, which is supposed to generate more baserunners, leading to more opportunities to score runs. The problem is they haven’t been getting on base this year as much as they should. Jeter and Bobby especially. It’s not that they’re designed to wait for homers, but they ARE designed to push guys forward by getting on base themselves. Their problem isn’t a lack of stealing bases. Their problem is a lack of timely and situational hitting. And you don’t need to be a speedy team to hit sac flies with men on third, or singles up the middle with Damon on 2B.
Jennifer, I’m going today. Weather looks good, now I just need to figure out if I need a jacket. My seats are in the shade.
On Bronxbanter, Cliff Corcoran posted where the Yanks are in the AL in some key offensive categories:
Tenth in walks. Ninth in OBP. Tenth in runs per game.
They’re near the top in slugging and stuff, but they’ve been tops in the AL in OBP the last two years and have scored a LOT. It’s no coincidence that they’re not scoring any runs, given that they’re a team built on OBP.
Whether it’s guys trying to make up for Jorge and Alex, or make up for being put in early holes by the pitching staff, it doesn’t matter. Point is that they’re not getting on base, particularly at the top of the lineup, and so their offense is stalling.
Jason might want to wait until he’s hitting over the Mendoza line before extolling the virtues of a lucky gold thong.
cashman’s younger and cheaper plan is working great.
scranton, trenton, and charleston are all in first place (or within a game)
as a yankee fan, i can’t tell you how much that excites me.
we all know how well minor league stats translate to the majors.
kei igawa has a 3.6 era at scranton.
cool- really cool
cashman is the best minor league thinker ever

Under Cashman, the Yankees’ MiLB Organization ranking went from a around 22nd to 5th in a little over two years. I would say its working fairly well, considering that the Yankees have ALSO made the Post Season each year for 13 seasons, made it to the World Series 6 times and brought home 4 World Championships.
For the first time since maybe the Late 50s and Early 60s, you can look to the Farm System and get excited with the “blue chippers” that have a good chance to excel with the Yankees.
Player Development takes time…and patience.
oops, Guess I killed this thread!
Sorry LathamJoe but it hasn’t been since the 50’s and 60’s that the Yankees farm was productive. Yankees had plenty of “blue-chippers” coming out of the farm system in the early 90’s. Rivera, Petitte, Williams, Jeter, Rivera, Hitchcock, Russ Davis, Mendoza, etc. Not all were stars or successes but they were strong prospects and several were used to acquire players who won championships with Yankees.
Right now the Yankees have several high end pitchers in the high minors (AA and AAA) but few if any potential impact position players. Some have come up in the last few years (Cabrera and Cano) but there aren’t any more we will see in pinstripes before 2010. Pitchers can be used to acquire other players so that is a valuable commodity. Cashman has done well but he also had good pieces to work with when he took over. He didn’t build the current Yankees team from scratch.
latham joe-
ypu didn’t kill the thread. people are just bored.
is MiLB Organization ranking really that important? if the yankees are #1, do the yankees get a banner to hang at yankee stadium?
all other things equal, i’m not sure of the correlation of a high milb ranking with winning a world series.
it would however be interesting to see the correlation if anyone does knows it.
