Wrapping it up in the Bronx

May
17

A few notes at the end of the day:

* Andy Pettitte is 0-4, 6.26 in his last five starts. He hasn’t lost four straight decisions since 2003. He has lost four straight at the Stadium (going back to last season) for the first time since 1996.

* Derek Jeter is a career .386 hitter against the Mets (97 of 251) with 12 homers and 33 RBI in 61 games.

* Jason Giambi now has 185 homers as a Yankees, passing Paul O’Neill and Charlie Keller for 15th place in franchise history. He has two fewer homers as a Yankees than he had for Oakland.

* The interleague loss was only the second in 11 games for the Yankees.

* That’s 10 runs in the last 51 innings for the Yankees.

    Giambi passed O’Neill? BOOO

  2. Nick in SF

Retire #25. Or bury it. Whatever.

  3. Eugie

I don’t think anyone really puts any value on Giambi* numbers record wise.

  4. Maybenextyear

    patience people….patience

we go through this same song & dance every season. Everyone wants to get rid of someone and then they start picking it up & doing good & people shut their mouths.

  5. Joe from Long Island

    1. When you get to Andy’s age, it’s tough to know (when you’re in real time, that is) if it’s a rough patch or the start of the end.

    2. Jason is just collecting numbers at this point (as opposed to Jeter, who’s still playing at a high level, problems with baserunning and tough sun notwithstanding).

Jason’s money is already committed. Releasing him may not cost the Yankees significant money, necessarily. Depending on who replaced him, it might not cost more than major league minimum. (did someone say Matt LaPorta?)

    3. Regardless of how the pitchers pitch, it’s very tough to win if you only score 2 runs/game. You can’t expect shutouts every game (unless you’re Cleveland – Can you believe that streak?)

  6. Bob

The lineup vs left handers is unbalanced. the bench is non-existent. George Steinbrenner would not stand for it, never did.

  7. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

In other news, I shot text messages back and forth with Alan Horne again yesterday but haven’t had a chance to post about it until now. Horne threw another simulated game yesterday and said it went “really well.” Horne said Mark Newman watched the session. As Newman told us a few days ago, Horne will pitch an extended spring training game on Monday.

Beyond that, it’s hard to say exactly when he might be ready. I assume he’ll come straight to Triple-A, but I don’t know for sure. Can’t imagine a Double-A start would do him any good.

The line that caught my attention from the text messages was this one: “I feel great now. Possibly better than I did comin outta spring which is pretty hard to do.”

I watched Horne pitch this spring. If he feels better now than he did then, it could be a sight to see.

    From Scranton Yankee blog

  8. pat

Somebody asked a few threads back about the pitch Alex hit off Price. According to the NY Post, it was a 95 mph fastball.

  9. 2004 Red Sox!

Yankee players worth lots of money but they playing worthless, we (Red Sox) are the team to beat, you have just one good pitcher (Wang) and most of you Yankee fans think he isn’t an Ace. now from the other side our No.3 starter Dice-K improved today to 7-0 hahaha. you’re going nowhere this year, its time to put up the white flag, hahaha, since we came back from 0-3 in 2004 to win the ALDS you haven’t gotten anywhere close. hahaha, your best player in HR’s is Giambi, hahaha, your best player in Batting Avg is Matsui hahaha, your fastest base runner is our old rusty Damon whose legs are worse than Pavano’s hahaha. its time to pull up the white flag. you got prospects?? ha? who? Hughes? Kennedy? even your Joba isn’t the same as last year, you got nothing. maybe Igawa, hahaha.

  10. Doreen

    Joe T from LI

I almost wish Giambi would stop hitting homeruns. Everytime he gets one, I feel as if he adds a couple of games to his lifespan, especially now with Alex or Posada in the lineup. That threat of power is, well, powerful.

Anyone watching the Thunder game on CN8? Gene Michael is in the broadcast booth. Says seeing Joba for the first time he knew he was the real deal & thinks if Mariano wasn’t there, he’d be the closer- also said he could start (we know Michael wants him in the pen, but he loves Joba’s curve)

McCutchen – sees him in a month or two getting a start
Fill in start – high on Rasner – like a Small

Chase Wright showed him something, good poise even with the 4 HRs in a row

Said he thinks the Yankees get off to slow starts every year because of all the veterans with contracts – for whatever reason, don’t get out of the gate as quick a guys with something to prove

That’s all for Gene Michael. That was pretty interesting. But listening to him speak, and actually seeing him, I can’t believe people are suggesting he could take over for Cashman at this point in time. For one thing, it sounds like he really likes what he’s doing now.

I think we should all just start watching the Yankees on June 1 from now on. It would save a lot of agita.

  11. Virgin Islands

    Doreen,

I don’t know if this year will be the same as years past after June 1st. Somehow it feels different this year. I know everyone is waiting for ARod but one player can’t make THAT much of a difference. I think the starting pitching will do them in. I don’t think Hughes and IPK will contribute much this year. Pettite is really struggling and Mussina could revert back to his early season form at any time. Plus there are no “gimmies” in the AL East this year. Is 4th place really out of the question???

  12. pat

    “our No.3 starter Dice-K”

If Dice K is your #3 starter, who’s your #2 starter?

  13. Doreen

    Virgin Islands-

I know what you’re saying. I’m trying very hard not to give in to the thought that the Yankees just won’t be competitive this season. I know it’s more than ARod and Posada being MIA. It does feel different from years past – slightly disjointed, if you know what I mean.

But they’re the NY Yankees, and the Yankees, for a very long time, have been able to spin gold of straw. Can they do it one more time? I don’t know. But I can’t give in to the doubts just yet.

  14. Nick in SF

Doreen, I’m with you on things getting better, but not on your metaphor; $200+ million isn’t straw. Right now they’re spinning straw from gold.

  15. randy l

… just saw a trenton player foul off a ball that bounced three feet in front of the plate.
    that was different.

he’d fit right up with the new free swinging yankees.

  16. 2008 Yankees

The day of reckoning is on its way for those troll RS fans. Ortiz and Manny are just a few short years of being done with the RS. Varitek is DONE as a catcher. All you are going to have is a midget second baseman and a guy you THINK is an all star in Ellsbury.

  17. Kyle

It’s time to move on! Giambi, Damon, Ensberg, Farnsworth, there always some fool general manager (or manager) who believes that HE can turn anyone around. Roll the dice!!

  18. Doreen

    Nick in SF -

Right now, I would say you’re right. But usually…they’ve been able to find whatever they needed to at least get to the post-season.

    Randy l -

We were going to go to the game, but the forecast (wrong, of course) was for thunderstorms. Anyway, saw Tabata on tv, strike out with the bases loaded. He’s ready for the show, too!

  19. Joe from Long Island

    Doreen –
I know what you mean about Jason. It will be sad to see him go, but that’s life – and business.

Interesting about Gene Micheal’s thoughts. I obviously don’t get Trenton games here in LI. I remember Gene Michael when he was the Yankee SS – he even pitched an inning in a blowout, in the late 60s, I believe.

I remember Pete saying that Chase Wright could become a lefty specialist. His composure after that 4 HR onslaught would be important for a reliever, that’s for sure.

With all these young arms coming through the system, I keep thinking that a deal must be on the horizon. Otherwise, the system will get clogged up, what with these guys, plus the ones in Class A – Betances, McAllister; don’t forget Andrew Brackman. At some point, you have to do something to keep the pipeline moving, and to turn this pitching surplus into players that can help the major league team. That’s why I’m intrigued by the thought that SJ44 threw out there a few days ago, about giving Milwaukee the pitching they need, for Matt LaPorta, a young, slugging 1B who is currently being blocked by Prince Fielder. According to some, LaPorta is ready for promotion to the majors. Makes me wonder if he could replace Jason.

    You can dream, can’t you?

  20. Virgin Islands

Oh yeah. Forgot to mention the $200M. That makes it even more amazing. How did this happen? Cashman?? George??? Actually it’s pretty embarrassing. No. Really embarrassing. A lot of extremely well paid players clearly past their prime.
Seriously. Almost 1.5 BILLION dollars over the last 7 years and no WS titles. Okay. That is $1,500,000,000. WHAT???? How inept is this entire organization????????????

  21. Jeff NJ

I bet the Brewers would more likely trade Fielder. They conspiculously did not sign him to an extension like they did Braun. I wasn’t thrilled with the last Fielder on the Yankees, although he had his moments.

  22. Doreen

One of the things Gene Michael said was that it was his job to “value” players, and I took it to mean for promotion or for trade. I would not doubt that something may be on the horizon. Obviously, they can’t go on like this, and Posada and ARod coming back are not enough. And as enamored as I’ve been of the Yankees getting Teixeira, I’m not sure that they can wait, AND I’m not sure the contract that they’d have to enter into would be good long-term (a la Giambi), because no one can see that far into the future. Plus, they’d be in a bidding war with at least 3 other teams (Braves, Mets, Orioles). Why not try to get a real 1B now? They do have the pieces for a deal.

And listen with prospects, it’s all a crap shoot anyway.

  23. Amar

Came back from 0-3 in the ALDS? That’s pretty impressive. Came out of elimination to win a series.

  24. This Year

Well, as depressing as this season has been, at least the kids are doing pretty darn well. Betances last night for Charleston and Christian Garcia (remember him?) pitched superbly tonight for Tampa before tiring a bit in the 5th after being out for what, 18 months with TJ surgery. This is a blue chip prospect everyone forgot about because of the injuries. Watch him advance.

  25. MikeKU

Come on Cashman apologists. Explain this absurdly terrible team.

  26. Jeff NJ

I’m not depressed about the season at all. They are 20-23, same as last year. The Red Sox are probably 10 games worse than they were at this point last year. No team is running away.

Oh and it is just a matter of time before the Yankees make the in season adjustments to contend again this year, just like every other year. Enjoy it now sox fans, it won’t last.

  27. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

    Simple

Jorge and Alex are on the dl.

  28. Virgin Islands

    Jeff NJ,

RS fans enjoyed 2004 and 2007. When was the last year Yankee fans enjoyed????

  29. BobK55

If the Red Sox are so great then how come they’re only 4 games up in the loss column on the Yankees?

  30. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

Why egg this idiot on? Just let him talk to himself.

  31. yankee lover

Yankees are blowing a major opportunity since bosox did not get off to a great start. Leave it to our Yankees to pull the mets from the grave. They had so much controversy and were primed to fall apart but we couldnt put them away.
Give Cashman credit for three negative things, 1- thinking Petitite would be a solid #2 starter which he isnt. 2-thinking Hughes and Kennedy would be solid #4 and #5 starters which they are not. 3-thinking he could get by with giambi as a regular first baseman DH which he is not

  32. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

So I guess today wasn’t the best day in Yankees history.

    Oh well.

Is anyone going to tomorrow’s game? I’m sitting loge level, section 17 row F if you want to say hi or yell at me for being a baseball idiot! :)

  33. Doreen

Speaking as a Yankee fan, I’ve enjoyed every year. Even if they ending wasn’t the WS championship, they’ve gotten to the playoffs, PLUS each year had something special about it to be happy about. Sure, it’s disappointing not to have every year be a championship year, but that’s life. And you move on, and you cherish the positives. Or, you can dwell on the negatives and be bitter.

  34. Nick

I would say has slightly worse hitting stats then Giambi did but is Tex blows Giambi away in terms of fielding. Hell, anybody does.

  35. Jeff NJ

Actually Virgin, I enjoyed last season very much, until the last couple of days. Championships are nice, but a lot of things have to break right in the postseason to win it. Reality is, just getting to the postseason is an accomplishment. Oh and doing it 13 years in a row is something the Red Sox will never ever do. They are working on one year in a row right now.

  36. Virgin Islands

    Jennifer and Bobk55,

I am a Yankee fan. Hate the Sux. I am just saying this may not be the Yanks year.

  37. S.A.- I still believe in this team. But they need to wake up.

Checking the forecast for tomorrow night and all I see is rain. Hope they can get the game in.

  38. Virgin Islands

Sorry about the “sux” remark. I usually don’t fall into that trap. Got upset. I try to be objective. I don’t see any reason to bash Sox fans when our recent history is less than impressive.

BTW…Jennifer… I am far from an idiot. Have I ever insulted you????

  39. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

We can thank espn for it being a night game.

    Thanks ESPN!

  40. YankeesTech

We will be fine I am not worried about this team. I will start worrying when we start hitting double digits in the loss column.

  41. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

I enjoyed the heck out of 2003,fwiw, and July-September 07.

I really hope tomorrow’s not rained out–I mean, how often is it that you have tickets to two games in one weekend and they’re both rained out?

  42. Guiseppe Franco

One thing people should keep in mind is that the Yanks aren’t going to take insane drastic measures to acquire pieces to win in 2008.

The front office won’t say it to the media because they’d get hammered relentlessly but the moves that will be made is going to be with the long term impact in mind. They aren’t going to dangle a plethora of young talent for two month rentals. And Damon, Farnsworth, or Giambi isn’t getting dealt. The team can’t trade a bag of feces for someone else’s bag of gold.

They decided against trading Joba, Melky, and Kennedy at the deadline last season before the deadline and Cashman was vindicated for it. The non move for Santana was also with its long term impact in mind.

It’s not all about 2008. It’s about 2009 and beyond.

This team has plenty of time to right the ship. Let’s not panic and suggest all kinds of crazy moves because they are not going to make an evaluation of the entire team when two of their biggest sluggers are on the DL.

  43. yankee lover

The Yanks are blowing a big chance with bosox getting a slow start. Bosox are winning right now because they have a roster that hits 1-9 in the lineup andtheir # 5 starter can get outs. Cashman needs to take credit for three negative things. 1-thinking Petitte was going to be a strong # 2 starter and he is not. 2- thinking Giambi was an everyday first baseman dh andhe is not. 3- thinking hughes and Kennedy would be viable # 4 and # 5 starters and clearly they are not. Its amazing what 200 million cant buy now adays, although there are SEVERAL teams with half that amount of payroll with better rosters

  44. Doreen

Here’s a question, though. How long do they give it? ARod back Tuesday, great. Posada not back for a while still. Do they start the clock post-ARod or do they wait for Posada? I mean, time does move on quickly, and I suppose a lot depends on where they are in the standings. If they can still maintain a close-to .500 record, while remaining within a 5-game back zone, it buys them time to make a fair evaluation of the team as assembled.

  45. yankee lover

Whats the point of spring training? why are teams waiting for 50 or 60 games to “see what they have” isnt that what spring trainings for? Oh, give Cashman a 4th thing to credit himself with, keeping Farnsworth. Although he has been good up until today, he was miserable in past seasons. He should have got theboot long ago

  46. pat

I became a Yankee fan more than 30 years ago so I was weaned to enjoy the ride because the destination wasn’t always so fun in those days.

Last summer was one of the more fun, exciting and enjoyable times I’ve had watching the Yankees.

  47. Blargh

Why do people think that more money = better? Pouring more money in is certainly one (but not the only) indication of trying (see Knicks and Dolan’s deluded thinking of how he’s trying to win), but what does that have to do with the quality of the play on field?

  48. yankee lover

good point Pat, but the team should be put together better. Its got the most resources of any pro franchise.

  49. Blargh

Spring training’s to get into game playing shape and mindset; performances don’t mean jack

  50. yankee lover

    Blargh
true, the money gets the players, the scouting, etc. I think there are other GM`s that would spend that $$$ more wisely, and have a true 200 million dollar roster. Yanks spent 200 mil but the roster is worth less, much less

  51. yankee lover

really? dont they pick who makes the final teamat the end of spring training?

  52. Money Ya'll

Dellin Betances and Zack Mccallister are str8 up dominating in Charleston –

  53. Blargh

A facade; a lot of spots are already more or less set thanks to ML contracts and/or veteran status
Case in point: See the Yankees roster; most of it we already knew from before ST even took place.

    Garcia returned w/ a bang tonight :D

P.S. I heard Stick on the CN8 broadcast he has talked well about Cutch and Wright, but lets be honest the SP the direction of Joba will not be in his hands, Nardi has more to do w/ where he is going.

    Nice throw Reegie !

  56. pat

    yankee lover.

they have the most money but that doesn’t necessarily mean the most resources anymore.

The other night during one of the Rays games, they put up a graphic about the contributions the Rays top draft picks were making.

Picking early and drafting smart has been a resource the Yanks haven’t had or taken advantage of. I’ll never complain about winning but… the Yankees don’t pick early and for many years were not picking smart.

Having the most money also worked against the Yanks with revenue sharing. While the richer teams used to be able to pillage free agents because the smaller teams couldn’t afford to sign them, more teams are now locking up players prior to their free agency years with the money being provided to them because of revenue sharing.

The most money just doesn’t work in their favor the way it used to.

  57. Joe from Long Island

Doreen – I think we’re on the same page re: Tex. I would not wait much longer before fixing things. And the hole at 1B needs fixing. I’d hoped that Shelley could do it, but he’s not shown any signs yet. Too bad, I really like him.

Rebecca – I’m jealous. My seats are loge section 24, Saturday package. Enjoy the game. Let’s hope it’s a win.

    Good night, all.

  58. Doreen

    pat -

    Excellent points.

  59. Joe from Long Island

Doreen – I’m on the same page re: Tex. Not sure how much time I’d give, but some things need to be fixed, regardless. Like 1B.

Rebecca – I’m jealous. My tix are loge section 24, Saturday package. Enjoy the game. Let’s hope we both enjoy a win.

(For some reason, my prior post didn’t get through. So if they both do now, excuse me.)

  60. ESPN sux thanks

good blog about Betances and Zack Mccalister tearing up the minors

  61. Micky#7--Old Ranger

Other teams get the pick of the crop on draft day, Yanks don’t, (12 years) therefore it is harder to get younger players the quality of Tampa, and some of the other teams. This, of course, is only one of many problems. I am sure you all can come up with many more…I sure can, but won’t bother. 27/08.

  62. Bob

The Yanks were 20-23 on May 21st last year, p.5 games out. So yeah technically we’re better off.

But, we had a healthy Jorge and A-Rod having phenomonal years and we were in 2nd place, not last.

  63. george

some of these rips of Cashman. well, i drew one conclusion from this mid-May game: it indicated Cashman was probably right to steer clear of Santana. at least if this is representative of how Santana throws now. he doesn’t look like the Santana of a couple years back. today he looked like what the reports on his 2007 2nd half were, his velocity was diminished.

still a good pitcher if this is what he is now. but not a 7 year, 20 million per guy.

  64. Bob

That should read 9.5 games out.

  65. Micky#7--Old Ranger

    pat -

    Excellent points.
Copied from Doreen, of course. 27/08.

  66. yankee lover

    true
yanks cant get good picks because they win, but they need to adjust. Perhaps do better with FA market, or make better trades, yanks did niether

holy crap Nomaas actually updated the Christian Garcia thread 8O

  68. Back Bench

“Somehow it feels different this year.”

Does that mean that the ’secret ingredient’ between turning the season around a la 2007 and the mediocrity playing this year is the managing of Joe Torre?

  69. Kill-Schill(ing)

I hate those guys at nm.

  70. Kill-Schill(ing)

    5-4 Sux.

  71. RustyJohn

Yeah, like O’Neil and Bernie weren’t roided up during their career. Most people just naturally have necks wider than their heads. Look at Bernie or O’Neil early in their careers and what they looked like at the end- both of them were juiced up too.

If there is it were between O’Neil and Giambi getting their numbers retired (I believe none of them should, but if they were in theory) I’d rather Giambi- he’s the only one who testified truthfully in the whole Balco case and, unlike O’Neill, he isn’t a crybaby jerk.

  72. Kill-Schill(ing)

It looks like 30% chance of showers tomorrow night by game time.

  88. russ m

Boston wins 2, Yanks lose again…what else is new?

  89. BB

Girardi need to think about his leadship deeply, and so do the pitching coach and hitting coach.
I really donn’t want to see Yankees loss any more.
    Please do something.

  90. BB

    Yankees make fans disappointed deeply.

  91. James

“Girardi need to think about his leadship deeply, and so do the pitching coach and hitting coach.”

Yes. Clearly Girardi is the reason why the offense can only score no more than 2 runs in a game or the pitching staff giving up gophers.

  92. Dee

Most days I feel things are gonna be fine soon after Alex and Jorge return. But after a day like today, I have to ask myself, with guys making $10, 13, 20 mills like we have, shouldn’t they be able to step up when Alex and Jorge are not around?

Most other teams, including Baltimore and Tampa Bay, don’t have an Alex or Jorge to begin with, still they’re leading us in our division. Why can’t we compete unless we have Alex and Jorge in the lineup??

  93. Girardi on the DL

James, you don’t know how Girardi is in the clubhouse. He might be making their lives miserable, and that could cause the batters to press at the plate.

Given his demeanor in after – game interviews, I wouldn’t think it a very fun place in the clubhouse lately.

I also think that Meachem is terrible as a third base coach.

When the offense dies like the Yankees have, the pitching staff won’t be far behind. Too much pressure to be perfect.

This team doesn’t look like they are having all that much fun.

  94. mmx

Moose is 39, Andy is unreliable, Rasner is not proven with only 2 starts, Igawa, Kenny & Hughes is useless, Joba doesn’t look dominant any more.

    Good job Cashman.

  95. john

    I’m sooo sick of losing

  96. Jorge Steinbrenner (the long lost third brother)

Andy getting that loss yesterday was just unfair. He kept us in that game. Farnsworth, for all intents and purposes, lost that game.

Again, I don’t know what it is with these nighttime posters, but you guys are way off the mark. You want to blame someone for the ills of this team, then blame management for moving away from the style of baseball that won us for four championships and turning us into a bloated beast with bad contracts in the early part of this decade. They’ve left us old, with albatrosses all over the places, and holes that have never been properly filled.

You DON’T blame Andy Pettite, Darrell Rasner, Phil Hughes, Ian Kennedy, or Joba Chamberlain however.

  97. We MIss Paulie

I do buy into the idea that Cash, etc. are using this year as a step to greater things next year, but I have a very hard time thinking that they’re just going to let it go this year.

Moves will be made, heat will be turned up and attitudes changed, the Yankees will be playing much better in a few weeks and will be in contention. Meanwhile the Sox are playing almost as poorly. All the Yankees hater love to say we’re “in last place.” Fine, but 1st is only 6 games ahead…big deal.

I’m not worrying yet. I hate watching, but I’m not worrying. Remember the Giants/Rockies series’ last year? More dismal than anything yet this year, for sure.
