  1. DMan

    Lets. Go. Yankees.

  2. JB

Great weather for A-Rod to make his return in.

  3. TIME 4#27

Nice to see arod in the lineup. LETS GO YANKEES!!!

  4. Josh

just adding that one guy in the lineup makes it look so much better

  5. S.A.- Someone call the police, the Yankees offense is missing

    Welcome back Alex.

    Let’s go Yankees!

  6. DMan

Anybody know what the Yankees record was in those 21 days without Alex?

  7. Fran

What a great looking line-up; especially the clean-up spot!
Great to see Alex back – now let’s hope that they get the game in.

  8. Anthony

Wow, with the exception of Molina, this is the A-Team. About freakin’ time!!!!

  9. Sara

Can’t wait to see Jorge in there!

  10. Sara

DMan…their record? Bad. That’s all we really need to know!

  11. pat

    DMan
I read this morning they lost 11 of 17.

  12. JoeT

SOOO nice to see a hitter I’m the middle of that line-up

  13. Dan from Mass

I saw on ESPN that they were 8-12 without A-Rod. Their BA, runs per game, and HR per game were nearly identical, though, with him (12-12) and without him.

Roberts and Millar own some pretty sick numbers against Mussina.

What’s with this lineup? It sucks! Girardi. ;)

  14. A.B.K

Who goes down to make room for A-Rod? (i would send down Ensberg and leave Gonzalez as backup).

  15. Scorpio

    “Rodriguez 3B”

No prettier words have I ever seen…

  16. jennifer

That is the most beautiful line up!!!

  17. Dr. Cox

    I

  18. Dr. Cox

Sorry for that. Everytime I seem to post, I get an error from FireFox.

Hmm. Anyway, I doubt they get this game in tonight. It is really, really crappy out.

  19. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

    Welcome back, Alex!

  20. westchester dave

That Girardi. Another new lineup. Why couldn’t he just stick with Sunday’s license for consistency? :)

  21. Chris NY

Amazing how much better the lineup looks.. Let’s hope A-Rod provides a spark and everyone can get going NOW.

  22. mark

is shelly duncan still on the team?

  23. ER, from the set of

    testing-

  24. bobby

Guisseppe Girardi, Please, beg you, switch Matsui and Abreu. Pllllleeassssssssssssseeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!

  25. JGNYC

Wow, this instantly looks like a decent lineup. Let’s hope they hit like one.
I’m still wondering who’s getting knocked off the team. A position player, like Duncan (AAA) or Ensberg (DFA)? Maybe the “13th arm”, Britton or Ohlendorf, move down to AAA?

  26. Nick in SF

ER, stop testing, you failed a long time ago.

From two threads ago, my favrite teams:

Yankees, NY Giants, the University of California Golden Bears football and basketball, Arsenal FC, Knicks (back when they were an NBA franchise; whatever happened to them anyway?).

  27. ER, from the set of

Yanks lose again tonight? Cano goes 0 for 4? A-Rod goes 0 for 5? Gas price hits record high?

  28. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

Bigger question for today: Will they get the game in?

  29. TKinDC

    bobby –

    Abreu can run. Godzilla can’t.

  30. Scorpio

It’s looking grey and ugly here in 10017.

Glavine wins! I normally don’t care but since the Mets swept us I’m bitter. lol.

  31. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

ER: Are you actually on the set of ER?

  32. Frank

do you think they will play tonight?

  33. bigjf

My guess is Britton gets sent down again. I happen to feel it should be Shelley, but that bat has potential off the bench (even if we haven’t seen it yet this season). Gonzalez is needed as a backup middle IF and I don’t think they’re ready to dump Ensberg yet (it wouldn’t break my heart if they did, even though I like Ensberg).

  34. JPugsly77

I got tickets for tonight…I am not sure if I am going to get in the car and go because of this rain, I can’t imagine they are going to play.

  35. DMan

    I hope they play…

Even as bad as they’ve looked lately, I still can’t help but to watch or listen to the games.

  36. pat

It started raining again 10 miles north.

  37. TKinDC

This season has gotten to the point where I would rather see the team win ugly 12-10 than to play crisply and win 4-3.

I just want to see some OFFENSE!!!

    27/08

  38. JPugsly77

I am on Long Island and its been raining the whole day…

  39. Doreen

I hope if they play tonight, which they probably will because the way the Yankees have played rainmaker this season the doubleheaders could really pile up, I sure hope ARod DHs or sits. You know, in addition to the Yankees not playing crisp baseball in a good many of their games, the weather surrounding them sure hasn’t been all that lovely, either.

I was listening to XM before, Charlie Steiner was interviewing the beat writer for the Mariners. If I didn’t know who he was talking to, I would have sworn it was about the Yankees. The talking points – GMs job in possible peril; lousy weather; low batting average with RISP; and a few other things that sounded mighty familiar—PLUS, the fact that the fans on the blog are out for blood! (I thought we in the NY metro area had the market cornered on bloodlust for managers/gms/poorly performing players!)

And then they had the guy from the Colorado beat, and it was eerily familiar, again!

So, I’m not happy about where the Yankees are by any means, but I guess misery loves company, at least a little.

  40. Matt

Bigger question is, what do the yankees do roster wise once A-Rod is officially activated. DFA Ensberg? DFA Betemit? Send down Ramirez?

  41. Neil

    LET’S GO YANKEES!

  42. CaptainsCorner

Thank gosh I don’t have to see Shelly Duncan batting 4th anymore. Arod is going to need a couple of days to get back into the groove of things. I wouldnt be surprised to him striking out and trying to do too much and hit the ball 500 ft. for the next couple of days. This rain better stop because he might be taken out of the lineup if the weather is still really bad.

  43. SJ44

Don’t they have 13 pitchers on the roster? If so, they need to drop one when they activate Arod.

13 pitchers on the roster is one too many, IMO.

    Rebecca,

ER is a Red Sox fan. He posts his predictions everyday in the game threads. He changed his name, adding, from the set of, when he got outed a few weeks ago.

  44. Don Vito A. Bellamo

Yes, if you lose 11 out of 17 games while some dude named A-Rod is out of the lineup…that MAY be part of the problem….YA THINK ???....Getting him back is HUGE…Adding Joba to the rotation ,,,getting Posada back…and another BIG MOVE possibly by HANK ? ( what could HE have up HIS sleeve ? ).....80-38 folks…..80-38 !!!!

  45. ER, from the set of

I think Pete tried to blacklist me. Good thing we got many terminals on the set.

  46. Doreen

Shoulda looked at the lineup before I posted! ARod at 3rd. I guess that could change if necessary, right?

That DOES look like a good lineup, with Molina being the only non-regular, but it’s still a regular lineup, because it is what it would be on a regular night of backing up Posada. Okay, guys. Now would be a good time to get it going.

  47. ER, from the set of

I’m not a sox fan. But I won’t waste my breath on this issue anymore.

  48. Nick in SF

Just tell Arod that it’s another, more sophisticated simulated game and he’ll do fine.

  49. SJ44

Why should Ramirez be sent down? He hasn’t given up a run all season.

One would think that’s a good thing.

My guess is, Britton is the odd man out when they activate Arod.

    Let’s see…..

In the last 10 days, the Yankees have promoted McCutchen, Cox, Robertson and Melancon. Its not even June 1 yet.

Veras and Ramirez, who have both pitched well, seem to be getting more traction on the major league roster.

Sounds like they are getting guys ready for roles when they decide to transition Joba to the rotation.

  50. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

    SJ: Ah, my bad!

  51. TKinDC

I apologize if this was already discussed – but I just saw that McCutchen was promoted to AAA.

Is he on the Joba Express?

    http://emedia.thetimes-tribune.com/Blogs/SWBYankees/tabid/552/Default.aspx

  52. Joe from Long Island

For what it’s worth, I hope Morgan Ensberg doesn’t get cut.

I went to Tampa in March and went to some of the games at Legends/Steinbrenner Field. In one of them, Ensberg got teased by some of the fans, with the “Mor-gan Ens-berg” chant, over and over. He was in the field, and he seemed to take it in stride, even holding up his glove to cover his broad smile and laughs. At the end of the game, after the sprints Girardi had them run, he then came over and signed autographs for everybody.

I know he’s not played much, and hit even less, but he seems like a truly nice guy. I hope he turns it around.

  53. Corey

Im no weather man (but I could be cuz theyre not always right either) but it looks like it should clear up by game time.

  54. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

    http://newyork.craigslist.org/mnh/wri/687122661.html

    Hmm.

To apply, or not to apply…

  55. whozat

“For what it’s worth, I hope Morgan Ensberg doesn’t get cut.”

It certainly seems like Girardi’s decided he’s done. I really didn’t agree with Gonzalez getting the starts against lefties in the last few games. I thought Morgan was putting some good, patient ABs up against some quality pitchers at the end of the TB series, and I figured this’d be his shot with ARod out. Gonzo was going to be on the team anyway, and was pretty unlikely to hit much against the guys going in the Mets series.

  56. Motown Yankees Fan

Rebecca – I say apply. You can live the dream!

  57. SJ44

Alan Horne also may be back in Scranton next week.

Horne, McCutchen, Cox, Melancon and Robertson. Even Scott Patterson has picked it up recently.

Six quality arms. Maybe not all NY bound. Perhaps some are being showcased for trade.

Something is up. To promote this many guys this early in the minor league season tells you they are either looking for these guys to head to NY or are showcasing them to other teams to help the parent club in other areas.

  58. Don Vito A. Bellamo

Think back to the day….we were 14-13 and only 1 game out of first place….ba bye A-Rod…and while he is away we dig ourselves down to 20-24 and fell back in those 21 days, another 5.5 games to the 6.5 games out that we find ourselves at. We can EASILY get this back. I don’t care WHAT the players say, everyone is going to feed off A-Rod being back in the lineup and playin up to your ability is going to be the NORM rather than the rarity….GO YANKEES….tonight is the start of a HUGE Worst to First run…they can DO IT !!! ;-) ( oh, and ER IS a Sox Fan…and WE ALL KNOW IT, BUBB ! ).....oh and remember 5 games back in the loss column with 118 games to go, I think that puts the BoSux magic number at 124, so we’re good !

  59. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 11 )

I think 1 or 2 of the 6 will be traded, Melancon and Horne are the best chance to stay.

  60. Doreen

    Rebecca –
    Go for it!

    SJ44 –
    Like reading the tea leaves!

  61. JoeT - 28 IN 09!!

sounds like the weather isn’t too good since everyone is posting about it lol

I don’t think I can go another day without a game, that ugly Mets series and two days of no baseball and just thinking about that??

I just want to see Alex park one and fire up the team tonight

  62. Laura

I think it will be one of the pitchers going down. If they send Britton down again, he should request to be released because this is getting ridiculous.

It’s too bad that BeteStrikeOut is on the DL because I’d love for us to DFA him.

  63. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 11 )

BeteStrikeout has 1/3 the bench offense and hasn’t been the problem

  64. SJ44

    Doreen,

Its what I love to do! lol

I ignore the public comments from Cashman, Girardi or anybody else in the organization because they aren’t going to tip their hands. They are all masters at talking and saying nothing. What they need to do, IMO.

I follow the actions. That always provides more insight to me.

McCutchen hasn’t even pitched that well lately in AA. Yet, he’s called up. This, after Mark Newman intimated to Chad Jennings last week that his promotion wasn’t in the near future.

No doubt in my mind they are positioning guys for two reasons: To see if they can help the Yankees when they transition Joba (especially if Joba has to go to Scranton to get transitioned) or to showcase in trade opportunities to find a first baseman or help at another position.

If Christian Garcia continues to pitch well in Tampa, it wouldn’t shock me to see him in Trenton in a month.

Then, you have the Humberto Sanchez Watch. At some point, he is going to be taking the hill and that’s going to be exciting.

Lots of young arms to follow in the system this summer. Going to be fun to see how it all shakes out.

  65. ham fighter

ensburg has clearly lost the confidence of the manager, if you’re not playing ensburg when arod’s out, there is no place on this team, he would be the logical one to go.

  66. pat

I’d guess a pitcher or Shelley going down.

They need to keep Ensberg and Gonzalez until Betemit comes back. If they need a substitute 3rd baseman and SS/2nd baseman in the same night for some strange reason, without Ensberg, who can do it?

  67. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

So that’s two people telling me to go for it…hmmm…It’s really tempting, I just don’t know if my mad computer skillz are good enough!

  68. Mark Baker

I hope a game is still on – it looks crappy here in Brooklyn.

I like Ensberg but it looks like he’s getting voted off the island soon. Gonzalez is a better IF and Duncan is the backup OF.

I’m happy that ARod is back, but the media worship of him since Sunday’s game has gotta stop. He can help turn it around, but the guy hasn’t played in 3 weeks and everyone’s expecting him to hit 3 homeruns tonight. Great if he does of course, but don’t be surprised if he’s not busting out of the gate at first.

  69. Doreen

    SJ44 –
Do you watch the games via computer, satellite hook-up, or do you just follow whatever trade publications (including internet) that are out there. I KNOW you can’t be at all the games!

Sounds like what you do is more fun that actually watching the major league team—even when they’re winning.

I have to say my husband was quite impressed that I knew who McCutchen was when we went to the game on Sunday. Heck, I was impressed with myself that we were at a AA game and I was actually familiar with several names on the roster. In the past, the only names I was familiar with were Eric Duncan, because he’s from NJ, and Shelley Duncan, ‘cause he was around some of the other times we’d gone to games. Oh, and we got to see Melky Cabrera once between call-ups.

It will certainly be interesting to see what comes of all this movement.

  70. A.B.K

Here in New York City (Brooklyn, 8 miles or so from stadium) is at the moment raining hard but they say (880) that it’ll stop around 6 O’clock and just drizzle until mid-night where it will start raining again).

  71. Doreen

    Mark Baker-

I don’t know about anyone else, but speaking for myself, I fully expect that ARod will not be in mid-season form. I am not expecting that he’s going to step in and miracle of miracles, they turn it around 180 degrees. But, still, it’s nice that he’s back and it certainly can’t hurt. :)

  72. Chris NY

Jeter was on fire when he came off the DL. A-Rod can be too. Doesn’t mean he will. But it’s not like he was out for 3 months and needs to knock the rust off.

  73. Chris NY

sorry, Jeter was never actually on the DL, but point remains the same..

  74. Jax

SJ44, if they do trade some of these pitching prospects hopefully they do it for a young ML ready first baseman and not for another veteran. As if there’s not enough veterans on this team already.

  75. gayle

Wow Piazza retired has to be one of the quietest ever although not as quiet as Bernie who now hasnt played in 2 years and still has not retired.

Forget about when he played for the Mets I used to hate when he came into Philly as a Dodger as he always killed the Phillies. Growing up in Norristown he felt that he had to do well against the home team and always came through.

How about Glavine killing the Mets. KNowing how Mets fans are I am sure they will be lighting up the radio dial this afternoon ready to fire the whole team.

  76. Laura

“BeteStrikeout has 1/3 the bench offense and hasn’t been the problem”

He hasn’t been the solution either. Did you see the last game he played at 3B? Absolutely Atrocious!!

He’s taking up a roster spot. We don’t need him if we are going to keep the Attorney General.

  77. Chris NY

Has anyone seen Spring? I can’t find it anywhere…...

  78. Doreen

I no longer believe weather reports at all. I mean, as a general rule, I don’t listen to long-term forecasts, but I’ve always thought they (weatherpeople) could at least get short-term forecasts right because, well, all they have to do is look out the window.

However, I think there is other motivation going on. I think that someone (I don’t know who – it’s a vast conspiracy, after all) wants people out spending money. They don’t want them to change their plans or decide NOT to go to wherever it is they’re going. So they say things like, cloudy with rain coming later in the afternoon. Or, as posted above, raining heavily now, but reducing to a steady drizzle from 6 until midnight, when it will return to heavy rain. So, people will think, okay, I can go to (the game, the park, the beach, whatever). It’s all SOOO convenient, that timing thing. But it never works that way!!!!!!!!!!!

  79. mel

What a sight for sore eyes!

    Go Alex, go Yankees.

    On Willie Randolph:

    1. public support of FO
    2. race card
    3. paranoia

    something’s a brewin’

  80. Vader

    SJ,

How many starts would Garcia need to move up and realistically after TJ surgery and all how many innings can we expect? Also, people seem to forget about him and he is still very young, 22, I think.

  81. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 11 )

I’ll introduce the Betemit finger pointers to his production
    .269/.296/.462, 3 RBI in 26 ABs, 7 K’s he was 5 for 12 since his recall.

    Shelley Wiffleball .194/.293/.250, 1 RBI in 36 ABs, 8 K’s
    Gone-zo .237/.295/.289, 1 RBI in 38 ABs, 4 K’s
    Morgage Ensberg .214/.276/.257, 4 RBI in 70 ABs, 20 K’s

  82. Doreen

    Gayle –
    Piazza retired? Officially? Wow.

  83. jennifer

Chris I’ve looked everywhere and can’t find it.

  84. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

Heck, the rain’s supposed to follow me to Italy.

  85. S.o.S.27

God. I cant believe that Arod is batting 4th! You would think Girardi would make him leadoff so he can get more at bats.

Thought i would keep the complaining of the lineup streak in tact.

  86. Doreen

    Rebecca –
You’re quite a fan if you’re going to take the rain with you and leave some sunshine for the Yankees!!!

Seriously, I hope you don’t get rained on in Italy.

  87. gayle

    yes Doreen official

    http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3405188

  88. Blargh

Betemit hasn’t even batted since May 10; can’t blame him for the offense since then

  89. Nick in SF

I expect Arod to hit three home runs and to catch two popups with his hat. And to pitch the 8th inning to help Joba transition to the rotation.

  90. S.o.S.27

    sj,
I asked you a month ago how long do you give Giambi at first? Memorial Day was the date you came up with. Thats a week away. Do you think that they are maybe thinking about pulling the trigger on a first baseman in the up coming weeks? When do we cut our loses?

  91. ham fighter

iv been playing fantasy baseball for years and i have always wrestled with whether to start a guy on the day he comes back from the d.l., and my observation is that guys tend to have big games on the day they come back alot.

the performance going forward for a few days after thier return tends to much less than their normal production, but that first day often seems to be a big one.

  92. Blargh

Nick: And to catch a few linedrives that, if not caught, would have struck babies.
Ergo, he saves babies while playing baseball.

  93. Nick in SF

Rebecca, I can recommend a great restaurant in Florence if you’re going to be there and like steak. Then again, it might be more of a challenge to find a crappy restaurant in Florence than a great one.

  94. Doreen

    Gayle,

Thanks for the link. Nice press release. It can’t be easy coming to terms with the end of your career. And though 39 is oldish for baseball, it’s pretty young in life.

  95. SJ44

    Doreen,

I have a satellite at home. I watch at least 4-6 major league games a night.

I go to about 25-30 Yankee games, home and on the road, during the season.

I am also going to St. Louis this summer for a Cardinals series because I want to see their new stadium.

A good friend of mine works for the Rays. I usually see him a couple of times a year.

The minor league schedule depends on other business I can wrap it around while I’m on the road.

I’m in and out of Charleston a lot for business reasons. That gets me to about a dozen River Dogs games a year.

I recently made my only trips to Trenton and Scranton for this season.

I will go to a few Staten Island games when I am on the road this summer.

Tampa? I catch them for one or two homestands and whenever they get to Jupiter. Which is usually twice a year.

    Jax,

I really hope they are scoping AAA and AA to find a legitimate ML prospect who can play first base. I would package a young pitcher or two for somebody like Matt LaPorta. That’s worth the gamble, IMO. Obviously, I don’t know if he is available. He can’t be traded until a year after he signs, according to the rules. But, someone along those lines is what I am talking about.

A guy like Jason Bay, who can play first base, is another option. I don’t see him staying with the Pirates after this season.

If they can find a RH hitting first baseman, not easy to find these days, that would be a best case scenario. If they decide to deal a young arm or two.

  96. ham fighter

i see mike piazza finally figured out what most of us could have told him 5 years ago, that he had nothing left.

that being said, congrats and enjoy your retirement, mike! one of the best offensive (and worst defensive) catchers in the history of the game.

  97. S.o.S.27

    Nick in sf,
Its funny you said that. I was watching “a League of their Own” this weekend and the catcher made a catch doing the splits. The outfielder(madonna)made a catch with her hat. So it only makes sense if Arod catches a pop up with his hat. Then Molins needs to do the splits to catch a pop up. Something tells me that Pena would be better suited for it.

  98. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

Nick: Thanks—I don’t eat red meat, but my brother loves it so we could certainly look into it!

I think one of the best meals I’ve ever had was at a restaurant/cafe in Piazza della Republica (I think that’s the one with the carosel in it), but I forget what it was called

  99. Bronx Born

    Go for it Rebecca!

  100. S.o.S.27

    ham fighter,
Didnt Matsui go 4 for 4 his first game back from injury last year?

  101. mel

Hard to believe that Alex missed almost half the games. The next couple of weeks should be interesting to watch.

  102. pat

    Mark Baker

Couldn’t agree more. The NY Post A-God headline was over the top.

  103. Blargh

I would also venture to suggest that A-Rod’s mighty home run swing will, like the fluttering of a butterfly, cause a chain reaction which will resolve in more bountiful harvests than the world without A-Rod would have, such is A-Rod’s contribution to fighting world hunger.

Home runs, defense, saving babies, and combating world hunger, what’s next?

  106. TIME 4#27

    Good job glavine…

  107. Nick in SF

S.o.S., I was referring more to the Seinfeld episode with Paul O’Neill. I don’t want to see Molina try to do a split until Jorge is closer to being healthy. Maybe Molina could catch a popup while whipping up some tasty Arroz con gandules.

  108. JT

The winner is Britton to SWB.

    SOS,

I don’t see them eating 15+ million on Giambi’s contract and DFA’ing him. That’s an ownership call and traditionally, the Steinbrenners don’t like to do that.

I believe they need a first baseman. At some point, it becomes a zero sum game with Giambi. Whatever offense he does provide, and its been minimal, is lost with his wretched play at first base.

Its an awful situation for the Yankees to be in but, its of their own choosing. Next time, I hope they are smarter when it comes to giving out a 7 year deal to a 30 year old first baseman. That was a disasterous contract and I hope that mistake is not repeated anytime soon.

Re: Garcia? He’s an interesting case. Provided he’s healthy, I think the Yankees may stretch him out (in terms of promoting him) quickly because he is Rule 5 eligible after this season.

They need to know what they have in him because they are going to have to make a decision on his future in the organization.

They have already said Betances and McAllister are spending the entire season in Charleston. If Garcia is healthy and is lights out in Tampa, a promotion to Trenton may be in his future.

  110. yanksince57 - i remember 1965

too slow JT – LOL j/k

  111. YankeeXDev

What a joke what the organization is doing to Chris Britton. I rather have him get traded to an organization that can need him. Surely the Yankees don’t like him for some reason

  112. PJH

I love the Chris Britton lovers. If he is so good he would be on the team.

  113. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 11 )

SJ I’ve said that for sometime Garcia is a fastmover he’s the guy sitting under the radar.

  114. Laura

The Braves win proves what I said this weekend – the Mets suck and no two game sweep of the Yankees is going to change that.

  115. S.o.S.27

Can we finally find a taker for Britton! He has been in the dog house since coming here in the trade. Give the guy his walking papers and let him go somewhere where he has a chance. These are men trying to earn a living. Do him a favor and let him go where he can be appreciated.

  116. ham fighter

i really hope they play b/c the rest of the scehdule looks pretty boring, mets vs. braves might be a good game to watch, but i hate both teams. ditto for wahoo’s vs. pale hose, plus it seems that the always use the sox (ken harrelson) broadcast which is unwatchable.

i do have bowling for columbine taped just in case of rain in ny…

  117. yanksince57 - i remember 1965

i expect to see tons of player shuffling this year – and i LOVE it! i’m so tired of the retreads being desired here – bonds wells nick johnson etc. why not a pavano resurgence LOL

  118. Laura

SEA vs DET tonight. The ultimate battle for the worst AL record.

  119. PJH

SOS- Im sure Chris Britton is doing just fine making a living. You make it sound like he is poor.

  120. Mitch

Bay would be an interesting option at first. He’s righthanded, has a high OBP and hits for power.

But according to baseball-reference.com, he’s never played first.

SJ44, did you mean that you could move him there and hope, or do you know something about his background there?

  121. ham fighter

when, exactly did chris britton piss on girardi’s corn flakes?

  122. mel

Chris Britton said in an interview that he didn’t mind all the shuttling. They let him take all the peanuts and tiny liquor bottles he wants.

  123. Chicago Dave

“The Braves win proves what I said this weekend – the Mets suck and no two game sweep of the Yankees is going to change that.”

Yes, it is unfortunate the way the Yankees have made mediocre and or flat-out bad teams look like Series contenders this year, isn’t it? In addition to the Mutts, Detroit is another great example…They swept us and then have continued to play like crap after that. Just think how bad Seattle must be that we were actually able to beat them…

  124. Victor the Predictor

Chris Britton will be part of a deal between now and the trading deadline of July 31st.
Too many promising arms to keep him hanging in the balance.

  125. ham fighter

next time they call up britton, he should just send them a lifesize cardboad cutout instead and stay home, nobody would notice anyway.

  126. Mitch

    YankeeXDev:
“Surely the Yankees don’t like him for some reason”

The answer to that statement is devestatingly simple: The Yankees don’t like Chris Britton because he’s an awful pitcher who hasn’t been successful in non-blowout situations. Last year, the Yanks were 1-3 in games he appeared in where they lost or won by less than two runs.

Translation, you don’t trust him unless it’s a blowout, and he doesn’t perform when it isn’t a blowout.

The sooner he’s off the 40-man, the better.

  127. Chicago Dave

“SEA vs DET tonight. The ultimate battle for the worst AL record.”

Not for long if the Yanks don’t wake up soon!

  128. raymagnetic ®™

Possible Yanks first baseman – The Angels Kendrys Morales anyone?

  129. yanksince57 - i remember 1965

do players on the 40 man roster receive any of the perks of those on the 25 man roster – i.e. per diem and moving expenses?

  130. Philly

2 of the 4 actresses in Sex and the city are just plain Ugly.

  131. Chicago Dave

My question is who would give us anything of even marginal value for Chris Britton? More to the point, what teams do you think would really show interest in him? I can’t see anyone taking even a flyer on the guy.

  132. TKinDC

In future years, when a player gets sent up and down a lot we should use the term “Brittoned”

I hope he gets frequent flier miles.

  133. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 11 )

SJ stop w/ the LaPorta hints, I want that guy at 1B for my team. I just don’t see Milwaukee letting him go.

  134. Chicago Dave

Philly – You mean the redhead and Sarah Jessica Horse Face?

  135. S.o.S.27

    PJH,
He might not be poor but he sure can make much more playing in the bigs. You and i know that isnt happening with the Yankees. We have an abundance of young studs coming up. If he didnt get the chance last year and early this year. He is S.O.L. Thats the reason i think he should go. We’re deep in that department and like the saying goes. Some peoples trash is others treasure. You have to admit he didnt get a fair chance.

    From last thread.
    most hated.
add Ben Affleck to that list. He’s gotta be on their payroll.

  136. ham fighter

hey, sara jessica, why the long face?

  137. Mitch

“He might not be poor but he sure can make much more playing in the bigs.”

I’d be shocked if Britton was on a “two-way” contract (sorry for the hockey term, but I’m not sure what it’s called in baseball). I’m quite sure he makes the same money whether he’s getting some guys out in Scranton or getting lit up in New York.

  138. yanksince57 - i remember 1965

britton just removed from 25 man roster on nyy website, a-god added!

  139. Chicago Dave

“hey, sara jessica, why the long face?”

Man, as if “long” was the only problem with her face! ;)

  140. Blargh

    “World Championships?”

I see it now…the clinching runs for the first in a new dynasty will be a monster grand slam by A-Rod in Yankee Stadium…
And on that night, a Dr. Philip S. Schein will be in the audience…
When bat meets ball, it will produce a majestic sound, signaling good things to come…
    The ball flies…it goes…and it is a home run…
...and it will hit said doctor in the noggin ever so gracefully.
This will inspire the next breakthrough in cancer treatment.

And that’s how A-Rod will contribute to fighting cancer.

  141. pat

Sweeney on SNY reporting Girardi pulled Alex aside this afternoon and told him he’s valuable to the team just being in the line-up and they don’t need him to try and do too much tonight. More important he be in the line-up in the long run than try to hit 3 HRs or reinjure himself tonight.

  142. Doreen

    SJ44 –
I’m dizzy just reading your schedule! But it sure sounds fun.

My folks live in Staten Island and this year, for the first time, we are going to try and get a game in up there. But I want to do it in style – so, we’re going to hop on the SIRR (Staten Island “Rapid” Transit) as an homage to my youth, and take it all the way to the stadium. I actually can’t wait.

My sister’s mom-in-law lives “not far from” SWB, and we were planning to visit, so maybe we’ll take a side trip to see the team there.

I loved it when a few years ago Tom Hanks and Ron Howard toured the country visiting every major league stadium. I’d love to be healthy (and wealthy) enough to do that when my husband retires. In the meantime, whenever we travel, we try to tie in a visit to whatever the local ballpark is, whether the Yankees are in town or not. Of course, Yankees on the road would be a major plus!

  143. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 11 )

    this could happen

  144. Pepper Brooks

So the Yankees have the same record this year after 44 games as last year. They are less games out.

What does this say? Teams in the AL East are better, worse than last year?

Yankees had all their fire power last year and had a losing record.

No Jeter, Arod, or Posada for most of the year.

Not sure what to make of this.

You won’t have Piazza to kick around anymore:

    http://sports.myway.com/news/05202008/v1636.html

Mike Piazza is retiring from baseball following a 16-season career in which he became one of the top-hitting catchers in history.

“After discussing my options with my wife, family and agent, I felt it was time to start a new chapter in my life,” he said in a statement released Tuesday by his agent, Dan Lozano. “It has been an amazing journey … So today, I walk away with no regrets.

“I knew this day was coming and over the last two years. I started to make my peace with it. I gave it my all and left everything on the field.”

  146. S.o.S.27

    raymagnetic,
I think Morales is a great idea. If Earth.U.S.CAL of L.A.of Anaheim wants to keep him. Then see what it would take to get Kotchman. Shields seems to be struggling a bit this year and if i can recall. Krod is in his free agent year.

  147. Blargh

Brandon: Say, where are you hearing the possibility of ‘Melo to the Nets anyway? I want to read up on that

    via Bill Horne (Alan’s dad)

Talked with Alan today after his game down in Tampa. He started, and was scheduled 2 innings or 35 pitches. He told me his day went like this-1st inning, 6 pitches, 3 outs, one broken bat. The second inning he threw 20 pitches total (around 2 errors). On the day 0 runs, 0 hitsthey had him go to the pen to finish his workout up to 35 pitches as they had other people they wanted to see. He said he had one more broken bat in the 2nd-didn’t mention K’s or BB’s, just said his arm felt great, his pitches were crisp, and his location was again, good. He said Mark Newman and Pat Rossler were there again today, everything was positive. He said he’s scheduled to go again Thursday. Continuing to look for good things ahead…

so altogether 70 pitches on Monday

I meant that red head and that straight hair blonde. btw, just curious, how many of the Yankee ladies here on the blog are planning to see the movie?

  155. Chicago Dave

That’s encouraging news about Horne… I’d love to see ONE of our pitching prospects (besides Joba) put in a decent outing or two at the major league level this year. Might as well be Horne!

  156. Laura

“btw, just curious, how many of the Yankee ladies here on the blog are planning to see the movie?”

I have no plans to see the movie. I didn’t watch the show when it was on Pay Cable so I have no desire to pay $10 to see the movie.

  157. Motown Yankees Fan

Philly – I will be seeing the movie, probably with some girlfriends, just like the marketers are hoping.

  158. Chicago Dave

“You guys actually are focused on her face. Folks. The prize is right under neath your nose.”

S.o.S27 – OK, if I’m catching your drift correctly, then I agree. If you just go from the neck down it’s all good!

  159. mel

    Philly,

    No!

Would like to see Iron Man & the new Indy movie, though.

What Happens in Vegas looks funny, even though I can’t stand Cameron Diaz.

  160. Chicago Dave

From what I’ve read so far the new Indy movie is kind of lame…

Iron Man is supposed to be good, though!

  161. mel

    SoS,

SJP’s best feature are her legs. I still remember her as Annie from when I was a kid.

Who’re you picking for tonight and for the series?

  162. Doreen

    Philly –
I wasn’t planning on seeing it, but my daughter wants to see it with me, so I’m going. Frankly, I enjoyed the series at the time, but it is very dated now. I hope they do better with movie. I think it’s time has come and gone, though, because I no longer care what happens to Carrie, et al.

So, you think Kim Cattrall is not attractive? I think it really depends on your “type,” but I’ll agree that the redhead (Cynthia Nixon) always had me scratching my head as to why she was in this group of women. Sarah Jessica can look good or not, depending on a lot of things. Kristen Davis (the brunette) is pretty in a more traditional way. None of them really, really impress me with their acting “chops.”

  163. Blargh

Hmm, interesting possible package, though I like Richard Jefferson
Nice potential usage of Van Horn’s contract

I still need to see Iron Man. Can’t wait for the SATC movie!

So I guess everyone(talk radio) is talking about Willie’s comments yesterday. Oh lord

  169. Doreen

It’s not raining in central NJ and sky actually looks a little brighter. It had been raining fairly hard just a while ago. So if the weather is moving toward the Bronx, maybe they can get the game in?

  170. Philly

  171. mel

    Doreen,

Kim Catrall is NOT attractive. Although I liked the movie Mannequin. Remember that? I tried to explain the plot to the kids, but they looked at me like I was nuts. A guy falls in love with a dummy?

  177. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

Iron Man was amazing. The one movie I really can’t wait to see is the new Batman one, though.

  178. Chicago Dave

“Raiders” will always be the best Indy film, IMHO. “Temple of Doom” was actually rather forgettable, except for “Short Round” (Getty Watanabe) and that crazy dude that ripped peoples’ hearts out with his bare hands! “Last Crusade” totally lost me, though. I’ll probably just wait until the new one comes out on DVD.

  187. Doreen

Yes, Cynthia Nixon, the redhead, “came out” afterwards.

mel – I didn’t see Mannequin. I saw her in that Britney Spears movie (Crossroads). Again, none except for SJP, impresses me talent-wise. I actually saw “Square Pegs” when it came out (SJP tv series). Ouch. But I’m surprised people don’t think Kim Catrall is attractive.

Is it good for a woman at 40 to still be considered “cute?” Hmmm. At what age does “cute” become an insult?? :)

  190. Chicago Dave

mel – Why, yes, it is blasphemous to prefer the Indy series over the Star Wars saga!!! Just kidding… Actually, I like the Star Wars movies less-and-less as I grow older. I think they’re just much more geared to young kids, you know?

  191. mel

    ham fighter,

You should break up with your gf if she makes you see SATC. That’s cruel.

  192. Doreen

SJP also was on Broadway twice more – How to Succeed in Business (Without Really Trying) opposite her now husband, Matthew Broderick; and Once Upon a Mattress. I saw both, but the second (Mattress) was very memorable. The girl can belt! And she was hysterical.

  193. Chicago Dave

My two cents… Kim Catrall was much better looking when she did Mannequin – even with the eighties clothes and the eighties hair!

  194. Doreen

    ham fighter—
I agree 100% with mel. Buy the tickets for her and a couple of her friends, and meet them for drinks (or whatever) afterward. You shouldn’t have to go.

If you go there make sure you get the chicken in brown butter, it is possibly the best chicken dish I’ve ever had. Sostanza is a very small place and at first glance it looks crappy but it’s actually fantastic.

The best restaurant I was at in Florence though was La Giostra, you should definitely try to get there too.

Give shelly some full games already! he gets one at-bat every 7 days and people expect him to produce….how lame…AND, giambi is the worst at first, he lets balls get by him every single game. They may not call them errors, but they SHOULD be! cause if you can’t stop a ball hit one foot to your right, then you should not be out there. And his offense has been absolutely horrendous. 1 home run every 6 days and nothing else ain’t gonna cut it. Torre would have benched him by now. He NEEDS to be BENCHED!

back to baseball. all over baseball there are guys playing with quad strains, jeter is one. its always a tough call whether to dl and rest a guy or let him play injured and hope it gets better. the one thing you have to do if you decide to sit them is to make sure he’s 100% before you bring him back. if they feel that they have to worry about him rounding a base now, they are bringing him back too soon. i assume that he is coming back at close to 100% or they risk wasting the entire d.l time.

  220. Peter Abraham nonfan

    Peter Abraham,

Maybe you were right about condemning those who cannot cheer Jon Lester on. I guess “karma” came back to bite your favorite senator Kennedy with his malignant brain tumor. I can only hope that the same karma comes back to inflict ruthless pain on your hero, Belichick. But then again, I’m pretty sure Kennedy will be miraculously cured the way Lester and Kessel easily overcame cancer, Papi spit in the face of his irregular heartbeat, Gammons lucked into someone finding him with his brain aneurysm, Paul Pierce played 8 weeks after being stabbed, and Tedy Bruschi played only months after after being stroked.

Oh well, such is life, but I still wonder if any Boston sports figure could overcome a plane crash, unlike Munson and Lidle. Again, pretty sure.

  221. Nick in SF

Kim Catrell more attractive in Mannequin than in the SATC movie? Why would that be a surprise?

Ladies, in which movie was Henry Fonda more attractive, The Lady Eve or On Golden Pond?

  222. S.o.S.27

    Doreen,
I had to watch Greys Anotomy for a little while. I hated it. But in turn she had to watch.
    24
    lost
    heroes
    supernatural
    prison break

Now i just watch desperate house wives with her at times.

    ham fighter,
If she insist on taking you to watch sinc. Make sure you dont sleep the night before and take the time to do so then. She got to see her show and you still get to go home with her.

    mel,
I thought manU was Ginoblii. Man here i thought you were finally seeing the light.

  223. S.o.S.27

“id say sjp and kim cattrall are no better looking than half the women i work with”

    Again,its all about sjp body.

  224. ham fighter

    nonfan
wishing cancer on ppl or saying its karma for his political beliefs is as low as i have ever heard.

  225. mel

    Nick,

Neither! Now if you want to do Pacino in Godfather vs. Pacino in Ocean’s whatever then I see your point. :)

The point is that she’s a little too old to play the sexpot. Catrell was really coy on whether this was is for the SATC. She’s like, “Well you never say never” What’s left? Sex and the City in Boca Raton?

    Brandon,

Yes, I became a Manchester United fan yesterday. Rebecca convinced me (and their part of the Yankee family).

  226. Senator Kennedy

“Ted Kennedy has spent his life caring for those in need,” said Senator Richard J. Durbin of Illinois, the second-ranking Democrat in the Senate.

I guess he cared for that poor girl he left behind to die in the lake. I wish Sen. Ken cared for his Massachusetts citizens the way he cared for her.

  227. Buddy Biancalana

    nonfan-

You have some really nice things to say huh? Crawl back into your hole & disappear.

  228. Senator Kennedy

I did not wish cancer upon anyone, however hamfigher, know your history.

  229. mel

    That’s for SoS and that’s “they’re”.

    Anyone near the stadium?

  230. ham fighter

you called kennedy’s cancer ‘karma’ and wished the same karma on bellichick. maybe you should read your own writing jerk.

  231. Doreen

    hamfighter –
You must have seen a very much touched up photo of Cynthia Nixon. :)

    Nick in SF –
I never thought Henry Fonda was attractive at all. :)

Now, ask me about Robert Redford, that’s another story. Definitely more attractive in The Way We Were, Butch Cassiday, The Candidate, All the President’s Men, etc. Okay attractive in teh one with Demi Moore. These days, he just doesn’t do it for me.

Or how about Paul McCartney. Beatles – cute; Wings – really cute; now – not so much, but the accent and the voice still melt my heart.

  232. dontfirecash

    S.A.,
few more you gotta check out this summer; Hancock, and The Happening

  233. Buddy Biancalana

Anyone have plans to watch the game on next week in Bryant Park?

  234. pat

Not raining 10 miles north. Seeing on YES that tarp is off the field.

  235. Nick in SF

mel, I was going to say in which movie do you find Charlton Heston more attractive, Ben Hur or Bowling for Comumbine, but that just would have been silly.

By the way, I find it highly offensive that some on this board appear to be objectifying women and their physical attributes. Having said that, I thought SJP was really hot in L.A. Story!

  236. S.o.S.27

    non,
    Isnt it naptime for you?
Get off the computer and watch your spongebob. Grow up loser!!

  237. Steve

These are direct quotes from Pete Abe:

“Be careful of that karma, it’ll come back to get you. I do believe that bad people usually end up with bad things happening to them. Fitting, I guess.”

I was wondering if he was referring to Bill Belichick and his Patriots. I guess those 7 years of cheating came back to get them and cost them perfection. Or maybe Belichick doesnt count in Pete’s mind as a bad person. I guess hypocrisy isnt a word in Pete’s vocabulary.

  238. Senator Kennedy

    Foofighter,

I never said I wished cancer on Belicheat, only ruthless pain, which can be anything. As for sen ken, he killed an innocent girl and got away with it scot-free. However, he’s a Bostonian and will likely luck out of his tumor anyway.

  239. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

    I guess they’re playing.

  240. ham fighter

not that your lack of basic human dignity deserves any review…
“I guess “karma” came back to bite your favorite senator Kennedy with his malignant brain tumor. I can only hope that the same karma comes back to inflict ruthless pain on your hero, Belichick. ”

now explain how that is NOT wishing cancer on bellichick.

    better yet, dont.

  241. bphill

Lets go A-Rod…c’mon get out of our slump.

  242. mel

Really off track from some of the cruel crap floating around here, but I’m a big believer in living a good clean life so that when you’re on your deathbed you have no regrets and no guilt.

I do hope that Senator Kennedy takes a good, long look at himself and comes to terms with what his life has been.

  243. S.o.S.27

“I find it highly offensive that some on this board appear to be objectifying women and their physical attributes.”

Damn nick. Your right. I guess i should have told my wife that i liked her teeth. Im going to seek some professional help. Cause im addicted to 36/24/36 or anything close to it. Lowest of the low. I tell ya.

  244. Doreen

Who’s going to win on American Idol tonight? Which David? I might even vote tonight!

  245. Senator Kennedy

    Doreen,

I am going to go out on a limb and say David Ortiz. Bostonians get handed everything else, why not A.I.

    Hamfighter,

I am saying right now, I do not wish cancer on Belicheat (although that would be fitting). I wish karma to bite him, whether that be him losing all his money or his women dump him like the bad habit he is.

  246. pat

First pitch delayed 5 minutes. 7:10 game start.

  247. S.A.- Someone call the police, the Yankees offense is missing

Looks better outside. Let’s get a win!

  248. Nick in SF

We were having a great conversation about Sarah Jessica Parker’s breasts and now we’re getting nasty cancer trolls? That just ain’t right.

  249. ham fighter

and another thing, idiot, there is likely nobody on this board that knows american history better than i do. i went to valley forge YESTERDAY and said a prayer for our fallen heroes.

like his politics or not, kennedy is rated by congresmen from both sides of the aisle as one of the most effective senators in the history of the senate.

now go slither back under whatever rock you crawled out from under.

  250. trisha - never underestimate the power of a few words from Hank.

I have a story I’d like to share with you.

I just came back from the wake of a son of a good friend I work with. Her son died from brain cancer at the age of 37. He had fought the battle since he was 21, and they actually thought he had won it until it was diagnosed as having come back
