Taking (most of) the rest of the day off

May
20

When I lived next to a hay field in Lebanon, Conn., nobody ever wanted to come visit me. But now that I live in New York, visitors drop in all the time.

Funny how that works.

Mom and Dad are in the big city and I’ll be hanging out with them today. So please excuse the lack of blogging.

After dinner (and fighting with my dad over who should pay), we’re going to catch a show on Broadway. Little did I know when I got them the tickets for Christmas that this would be the day A-Rod comes back from a three-week layoff to play for the Yankees.

So while Alex is hitting a three-run bomb in the eighth inning to win the game (bet on it), I’ll be the youngest person in the audience for Jersey Boys. But that’s OK. It’s always good to see the folks.

Thanks to the wonders of the Sprint Air Card, I will post the lineup once it becomes available. Check back around 3:45 p.m. or so.

In the meantime, get some work done for once.

Pete – Enjoy Jersey Boys, it’s a fun play.

And the eighth inning home run will be Alex’s second of the night, right?

And you want us to get some work done? How can we when we all can’t wait to see who is getting sent down or DFA’d when Alex is reactivated?

  2. Moe

    Pete. U the best!!

  3. Gael11

Pete, I’m guessing I’m a few years younger than you (and my wife is as well), and we took my mom to Jersey Boys in Vegas for her birthday last weekend. I knew nothing about Frankie Valli or The Four Seasons going in, and I ended up loving the show. It moves significantly faster than a Mussina “bullet” and has a couple more twists than El Duque. Wow, that was bad writing.

  4. saucY

i need to get one of those air card thingies. actually, i need something usb. my laptop doesn’t have card slots…

  5. kd

Honestly Pete. This blog has cost me hours and hours of productivity. I wouldn’t change it for the world. Thank you.

  6. SJ44

I also saw Jersey Boys in Vegas a few weeks ago. Its a terrific show.

Well worth it Pete. As a music fan, I think you will enjoy it.

“In the meantime, get some work done for once.”

Ha! You think I’m going to actually get our work done!?

Typing responses to the posts here while at my desk makes it look like I’m very busy getting work done… my boss walks past my office – hears me typing away, smiles and thinks:

“Thank God we have such a productive worker like #9!”

    Thanks Pete!

    Thanks internets! :-)

I wanted to pick up on a thread for another post. I dont feel like I should be forced to cheer on Lester just because he had cancer. I am glad anytime someone survives cancer as it is a horrible disease but to be honest, it goes to show you how money means everything in this country. We are all supposed to cheer Lester because he beat cancer but what about the thousands of other people who dont have the ability to recognize the early signs or the money for all the pharmaceuticals. I will donate to the Jimmy Fund to help beat cancer but I wont be compelled to cheer on somebody who beat cancer because he had the resources availble that 99% of the people dont have access to. Again, just to make sure everyone understands, I am happy he survived and I am not saying that I wont cheer him, I am just saying I dont want to be FORCED to cheer him and I dont want to be insulted or condemned for not cheering him.

“Thanks to the wonders of the Sprint Air Card”

Pete, get a blackberry and stop lugging the laptop around on your days off…...

  11. gayle

Pete I can pretty much bet the house that you will NOT be the youngest person at the show. It is a great show and the music is timeless as well as great story.

  12. Interesting

Have fun Pete! Hanging with the parents is more important.

  13. saucY

i’m sure everyone in boston will be cheering for A-Rod after beating a quad strain and hitting an 8th inning 3 run blast! ;)

  14. Yanksrule57

I want to see Jersey Boys when we visit NYC in early June.

It is right around the corner, I am very psyched!

I am hoping the Yanks are out of their funk by then and I can watch them put a whoopin’ on the Blue Jays.

  15. Paul M.

What a day to be in New York!!! A-Rod returns to the lineup and the Knicks future begins tonight with the bouncing ball of the NBA lottery.

  16. Don Vito A. Bellamo

    ( in a whiney voice )....but I don’t WANNA work !!! :-)

  17. Sara

Pete, Jersey Boys is an AMAZING show! you will love it! Perhaps it will be more exciting then the show the Boys in the Bronx have been giving us lately!!

  18. murphydog

    Steve:

“I will donate to the Jimmy Fund to help beat cancer but I wont be compelled to cheer on somebody who beat cancer because he had the resources availble that 99% of the people dont have access to.”

Nobody’s forcing you to do anything. But I really think you need to get your head out of that dark orifice it’s currently in.

You’re unwilling to cheer Lester because he had health insurance? Pal, a real health insurance advocate doesn’t begrudge someone their recovery because they had insurance and others don’t.

  19. jennifer

They will also hear you yelling YES!! during Jersey Boys at a very inapproriate time.

  20. pat

Do you believe players when they say they didn’t know a no hitter was hapening?

Jason Varitek said he didn’t realize Lester had a no hitter happening until after the 7th inning when he looked in the bullpen and saw no one warming up.

  21. Doreen

    Pete –
Enjoy the show! It’s one of the several on my list of “Shows To See.”

I got to see the end of Lester’s game this morning on ESPN. It brought tears to my eyes. There are absolutely times when you cheer for a person, an individual, and this was one of those times. What a victory for him.

Now, that being said, I hope the Yankees beat the pants off him next time they face him!

  22. 56Bomber

“Do you believe players when they say they didn’t know a no hitter was hapening?”

I believe that Manny still doesn’t know there was a no hitter.

  23. Dee

“I dont want to be FORCED to cheer him and I dont want to be insulted or condemned for not cheering him”

Wait, but aren’t we on the internet? If you want to cheer for Lester, join the thread and cheer. If you don’t, go on some other sites or talk about something else here. I don’t get how you’re being “forced”?

  24. Chris NY

Pat, in the 4th or 5th inning, maybe… but what kind of schmuck who’s catching the no hitter doesn’t realize until the 7th inning that:

A – no one has gotten a hit
B – everyone on the bench is chewing their fingernails trying not to mention the fact that, no-one has gotten a hit
C – no one has gotten a hit!!!

Is he that clueless? Maybe. Why would he lie, I guess…?

  25. Hideki Balboni

If Joe Torre were managing the Yanks this year, would the team’s record be better, worse, or the same?

  26. jennifer

Has anyone gotten a no hitter, because someone made an error that cauased someone to reach base?

In other words did they only get a ‘no hitter’ cause someone botched a play and should have had a perfect game?

  27. jennifer

    Hideki

    WORSE

  28. Chris NY

“In other words did they only get a ‘no hitter’ cause someone botched a play and should have had a perfect game?”

Considering the only difference between a no hitter and perfect game is no walks and no errors, yes, absolutely. I would guess a large percentage of no hitters were 1 error away from a perfect game. In fact, I would also argue that there are probably even more 2 hitters that could have been perfect games (thank you Bobby Abreu, without that “hit,” the bunt base hit never happens).

  29. Chris NY

“If Joe Torre were managing the Yanks this year, would the team’s record be better, worse, or the same?”

Who cares. He’s not managing this year. But if forced to answer – the same.

  30. raymagnetic ®™

“If Joe Torre were managing the Yanks this year, would the team’s record be better, worse, or the same?”

If a tree drops in a forest and no one is around does it still make a sound?

  31. pat

    Chris

I’ve heard other people involved in no hitters say it too.

I just figured that a catcher of all people would know what is going on in the game. There were 2 walks and an error so there were baserunners. Maybe that’s what throws them off

  32. #9

“I believe that Manny still doesn’t know there was a no hitter.”

On his radio show yesterday, Jim Rome, was babbling on how great Manny or as he says “Man Ram” is.

I could see him saying it once but he must have repeated how much he likes “Man Ram” 30 times!

  33. Chris NY

Pat, I suppose it is possible. I would just think by the 7th inning, enough people have realized it to have that quiet in the dugout where everyone’s trying not to say anything and no-one sits within ten feet of the pitcher. I’d think they’d notice that, if nothing else.

  34. Steve

    murphydog
If you had read my post correctly, you would have realized that I didnt say I was unwilling to cheer him. I just said I didnt want to be FORCED to cheer him. Also, I didnt begrudge the guy for beating cancer, I just begrudge the system that makes effective treatments available only to the rich. And there are a lot of people who have health insurance that still cant afford the cost of fighting cancer. You have to realize that health insurance isnt some magical money machine that pays for everything you want. It only covers a small amount. And people like Lester can cover the out of pocket costs without a blink of an eye.

  35. Chris NY

“he must have repeated how much he likes “Man Ram” 30 times!”

I can’t even count how many SNL and late night talk show jokes this would generate, if Jim Rome actually had a large audience…....

  36. Johny Mnemonic

I’m thinking about getting wireless broadband service too. How’s Sprint working out for you Pete? Anyone got suggestions?

  37. Chris NY

Whoever has a gun to Steve’s head, please set him free…

  38. Jake

Enjoy the show Peter…I heard that one is of the best.

  39. S.A.- Someone call the police, the Yankees offense is missing

    Have fun tonight Peter!

  40. Fran

Pete – Enjoy the show. It is great. And you can catch Alex’s return (and game winning homerun) on Yankees replay!

  41. Jeff NJ

Jersey Boys is great, you’ll love it. Use our cell phone to check scores when you can, unfortunately that’s what I’ll be doing too.

However, I am taping the game which intend to watch when I get home at 10 (unless of course the are down 11-2). You might think this is pathetic, but I like to read through the comments here as I rewatch the game. It’s much more enjoyable that way.

  42. Hideki Balboni

Chris NY—“Who cares. He’s not managing this year.”

That will come as a surprise to the Dodgers!

  43. murphydog

    Steve:

    I read your post correctly.

You’re confusing your misguided class warfare issues with health insurance and cancer when you write: “And people like Lester can cover the out of pocket costs without a blink of an eye.”

Reforming health insurance has nothing to do with cheering for Lester or the act that he has health insurance or millions of dollars.

  44. DMan

    Have fun Pete!

I hope the rest of us have some fun tonight to watching the Yankees win a game.

  45. stuart

enough on helth insurance.. 40 + mill do not have that is true. wealthy people live longer and get mecal treatment, that is true..

but let’s talk baseball. I have no ill will to John Lester the player but I NEVER EVER root for Boston teams period…If they had different fans absolutely..

  46. pat

I’m 10 miles north of Yankee stadium and light rain has just started to fall.

  47. Chris NY

Last time I checked, plenty of people with money die of Cancer everyday. To get on a soap box on a baseball forum and say you shouldn’t be forced to do something that NO-ONE IS FORCING YOU TO DO, isn’t just silly, it’s pointless.

The guy is a good story. He beat Cancer and came back to play professional sports and perform at the highest level. No one forced, or even ASKED you to cheer for him. Pete merely suggested you tip your cap.

  48. Russell NY

“i need to get one of those air card thingies. actually, i need something usb. my laptop doesn’t have card slots…”

Bucholz will steal you a new one.

  49. Bob Hope

do the math. I love the fact that many on this blog are keeping it positive saying the Yanks will get hot. Boy I hope so. Howver lets do the math, If the Yanks continue to lose and give up more games heres what they are setting themselves up for. Right now Boston is 28-19 with 115 to play. Lets say boston does poorly for them and plays 1 game under 500 the rest of the way. that makes them finish with a record of 85-77
The Yanks would have to go 66-42 the rest of the way to finish one game ahead. Thats 24 games over 500 the rest of the way. NOw, that does not count or matter if the red sox play better than 1 game under 500, Nobody can think they`ll do that, and it does not consider if someone else in the divsion gets hot. I think its asking alot. Every loss matters

  50. Russell NY

Thank you pat… with the way the season has been going it would take hail for the game to be called off. Light rain I don’t mind.

  51. Steve

    murphydog
You did read my post incorrectly because you said I was unwilling to cheer Lester. What I said was that I didnt want to be insulted and condemned if I decided that I didnt want to cheer for him. There is a difference. My only point about Lester’s fight with cancer was that the outcome was as much in doubt as the 1st Gulf War with Iraq. I was far more impressed with Jim Abbot’s no hitter because all his money and influence didnt buy him a new arm that he would have been allowed to pitch with. Finally, all I have been saying is that if I cheer for Lester pitching a no hitter it will be because he did something rare in baseball, not because he threw a no hitter AND he “beat” cancer.

  52. Blargh

Oh, what a night. Late December back in sixty three. What a very special time for me. As I remember what a night.

Hmm, I really should see Jersey Boys sometime

  53. jennifer

    http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/20/sports/baseball/20yankees.html?_r=2&ref=sports&oref=slogin&oref=slogin

Hank did speak, but he didn’t say anything to cause ESPN to run with it.

  54. Joba the Great

“Get some work done for once.” That’s cold, Pete. What did we ever do to you? :)

And as much as I love the Yanks, I’m happy for a cancer survivor tossing a no-hitter, whether he wears pinstripes, a Red Sox jersey or polka dots. Well, I’d rather see him wear pinstripes or polka dots, but you get the point . . .

  55. Joe from Long Island

Pete – Enjoy your day with your parents. You’re fortunate.

Oh, joy – it’s starting to drizzle. Just what Alex needs as he’s coming off the DL for a muscle pull, more cold and wet weather.

  56. jennifer

UGH my post didn’t show up.

Go to the NY Times site, Hank spoke to Tyler. Didn’t say anything earth shattering. But it was an interesting read.

  57. Chris NY

Bob Hope, everyone did all the math games last year and we won the wild card easily. Don’t waste your time worrying about the math, just watch the games.

Boston could fall apart with injuries at any moment (like they did the year of the Boston Massacre), we could get hot, Tampa could get hot and run away with the division, blah blah blah…. It is still early enough that anything can happen.

You are right that every loss counts. I don’t know a single fan that doesn’t care about a loss. I hate all losses. Doesn’t mean I’m going to create a spreadsheet with all the possible ways we can win or not win the division or the wild card and update it hourly as the scores come in…

  58. jennifer

I wonder if they would dh Alex tonight, espically given the cold rainy conditions.

    Melky
    Jeter
    Bobby
    Alex
    Matsui
    Jason
    Cano
    Jose
    Alberto

  59. Clay Buchholz stole my laptop (aka Joe)

Lebanon, CT. I feel bad for Pete. Living in that area of CT has obviously scarred him.

  60. ham fighter

after we win maybe 8/10 ill start thinking about the math. right now its alot simpler than that, start playing good baseball or your calculations just turn into counting down the games left.

  61. S.o.S.27

    Good morning,
I think its a great story about Lester. But im with stuart on this one. I cant root for anyone on the sox. Its a perfect script for a movie. I just wont be watching it. Just like that other red sox movie they made in 04.

Does anyone know who will be moved to make room for Alex?
Secondly, cant we get Joba in the starters role sooner rather than later and have him rotate with someone in September? I just dont think we should wait till we’re 14 back to make a run. We can still take this thing. Id prefer to lose with our best.

  62. Chris NY

    “Beat” Cancer???

Is this clown actually suggesting that because the kid has some money (he was a minor leaguer just called up to the big leagues when this happend, let’s not act like he’s got A-Rod’s money) that CANCER was no more a risk to his life than the flu?????

  63. jason

Lester will lose his next 3 starts.
He threw 130 pitches last night. That will hurt quite a bit. I think it was Schilling a couple of years ago who was left in to throw quite a bit of pitches as he was going for a no hitter. He had a miserable few outings following. Hard to go from 100 – 130.

  64. jennifer

    S.o.S.27

People think Morgan will be gone, or maybe Shelley, or Alberto, or it could be on of the 55 relief pitchers we have. Take your pick.

  65. CB

Because the team has been so bad this year they haven’t gone into as many games with late leads.

In turn Joba has thrown fewer innings than expected in this 8th inning set up role.

He’s going to get moved into the rotation sooner rather than later, particularly if they keep piddling along at around .500.

At this rate he actually has saved up more innings to throw a a stater than you would have guessed going into the season.

  66. ham fighter

alot of ppl here seem unable to tell the difference between rooting for a team and congratulating a guy for an accomplishment. for most of my life, until recently, it was common for ppl in all big-league parks to cheer the opposing pitcher whene he’s taken out after a very good performance. were all those people ‘rooting for’ the opposition or just showing that they appreciate a job well done (and in the past). this is the same thing.

i rooted for a kc comeback all the way until they were rushing the mound. i did not root for the red sox at all. however, now that the game is over, i give major props to lester and his family, as acknowlegment of a great accomplishment, which is also not rooting for them. and the next time lester takes the mound, ill be rooting for whomever his opponent is to knock him out in the 1st inning.

  67. S.o.S.27

I have to get this off my chest. Some of you might not like this but here it goes. Everyday i come on this blog i keep hoping that Petes headline is the Giambi has been traded or DFA’d. I just cant stand him on this team. Seems like every game i see him play he hurts us more than helps. The other night vs. the Mets. All i could think of is what would the score have been if he didnt throw that ball away from second base. Where Jeter had to save it. Could they have came back? Maybe, maybe not. Could Jeter have gotten injured? Yes. Its time to put Giambi where he’s best fit. Pinch hitter.

Im starting to think the same thing about Damon. If he’s going to hit .250. Let Gardner come up and hit the same thing. At least he would provide better fielding and speed.

    Just my 2 cents.

  68. TKinDC

OMG – Bob Hope is working up “Magic Numbers” on 5/20.

    Stop the madness.

  69. saucY

i read some comments last night that kind of gave the impression that Lester’s no-hitter had less meaning because it was against a weak offence of KC.

it made me start wondering if there was ever a no-hitter pitched against what would be considered a power-house offense, in recent years? seems like they’re almost always against weak offenses (which makes sense)

  70. jason

JB Cox gets GIDP with bases loaded to get out of inning and then another 2 groundouts for a 1-2-3 8th. He, Melancon and Robertson are inching closer. Ironically, the Yankee bullpen has been the strength of the team so far. But with some of the guys coming, it will help smooth Joba to the rotation.
Garcia is scheduled to pitch again in two days. Sanchez will be back soon. Betances and Macallister (and Heredia before he went to dl and he will be back soon) are dominating in Charleston.
We have clearly seen that it will take a couple tries for starting pitchers to get comfortable with the major leagues, and that relievers have an easier transition. The depth and ceiling of the pitching in this organization right now is astounding.
We just need someone to help us score more than 2 runs a game. We have those in the minors too, but they are 2 years away at least (except for Garnder).

  71. JGNYC

Any guesses as to who’s coming off the 25 man roster to make room for Arod? It could be a pitcher or a position player, considering they’re carrying an extra arm. Chad Jennings seems to think it could be Shelly, Ohlendorf, or an Ensberg DFA. My guess is Shelly or Britton.

  72. CB

“It made me start wondering if there was ever a no-hitter pitched against what would be considered a power-house offense, in recent years?”

Last year Verlander threw a no hitter against the Brewers. The Brewers were a terrific offensive team last year. They did have Craig Counsel and Tony Graffanino playing in the place of Ricky Weeks and Ryan Braun but still Fielder, Hardy and Hall in the line up that day.

Verlander hit 102 in the ninth inning of that game, I believe.

  73. jason

Brett Gardner is 1-2 with 2BB today at SWB. How much worse can he be then Damon. There have been some nebulous posts about Damon being traded over the past few days. I am in Boston so don’t get the full NY rumor mill. Can someone fill me in on who and for what. I would certainly consider eating some salary and getting back some nice prospects (fingers crossed for a good 1b prospect) a la Sheffield or Johnson. You can survive with Gardner, Melky and Matsui as the lf and cf combo.

  74. S.o.S.27

    ham fighter,
I see your point. But all i could think about after he got the no hitter is. Here we go with the Lester and Buchholtz are going to be better than Hughes and Kennedy. Because they already got a no hitter. I guess the post that said if they had half decent fans(accept for Dennis and ray) maybe i would have thought different about it.

  75. S.A.- Someone call the police, the Yankees offense is missing

S.O.S 27-regarding Giambi and Damon..I agree with you.
They are both becoming painful to watch.
I hope I am wrong and they turn things around.

    Alex is back tonight! WooHoo!
NBA draft lottery also. Jay-Z is gonna represent the Nets tonight. I guess D’Antoni will do the honors for the Knicks?

  76. S.o.S.27

    saucy,
Didnt we get a no hitter thrown against us vs. houston with a decent offense? I believe they used like 3 pitchers in that game.

  77. ham fighter

i would have to expect ensberg to be released. fact is, he was supposed to be alex’s backup but he couldnt do anything when alex got injured and gozalez passed him by. now that alex is back there is no place for ensberg on this team.

  78. ham fighter

sos 27, houston used 7 pitchers in that combined no-hitter.

  79. jason

3 up 3 down for Patterson. He ahs been great as of late. Putting himself in the mix for a callup as well. I think he is overcoming his feelings of being skipped over after spring training and then again for the Britton and Alba roadtrips.

  80. Chris NY

“Verlander hit 102 in the ninth inning of that game, I believe.”

MPH or pitch count (I’m assuming MPH, but both would be impressive).

That’s what really ticked me off about the Abreu mis-play on that HR. It was against Boston, Wang wouldn’t have needed more than 100 – 110 pitches, and it would have been a perfect game, not just a no no.

  81. S.o.S.27

    S.A.,
I read an earlier post where you were rooting for the Hornets to win. Im lost. Doesnt S.A. stand for San Antonio?

    Go Spurs!
    Go Red Wings!
    Go Yankees!!

  82. Ian

I’ve noticed that Gardner has actually been batting 3rd in the lineup recently in Scranton.

  83. TKinDC

I don’t mean to devalue a no hitter, but if you look at the list of people who have pitched them it is not uniformly great. I think Burleigh had one recently and there are a bunch of mediocre names on the list.

In the end it just counts as a win for the team, despite being a wonderful individual achievement.

  84. JoeT - stop going through the motions and play ball!!

so I put on YES and they’re showing the game where A-Rod hit the homer to beat the O’s last year…. Of course once it comes on I see Igawa on the mound (bad enough) he gives up 2 base hits, and the 2nd one was to Millar for his first hit of the year lol

  85. saucY

good call CB. i looked at a list after making my post, but the Brewers didn’t really jump out at me as a power-house offense. (NL, last year…)

  86. jason

Another point about the young pitchers. I read a Melancon interview on Pinstripes Plus this morning. Also having read similar interviews with Konton and Horne. In each one the respective pitchers stress how important the mental aspect of the game was to their recovered success. Not trusting that you can get hitters out, trying to be too fine, overthinking will all lead to lesser results.
Kennedy in AAA showed that when he thought he would dominate (which in an interview he said) he did dominate. He got ahead of hitters and put them away.
Hughes when he recovered his stuff at the end of last year and in the playoffs beleived he would be successful and was.
Like I previously posted it may take a couple go rounds, and certainly some knocks, but pitchers with the stuff of Hughes, Chamberlain etc will ultimately be winners if given the opportunity.
It took Lester a couple of years and a recovery from a serious injury to become the pitcher he is getting closer to being. Bucholz has been up and down this year. Beckett – who was arguably the most dominant pitcher last year and one of the 3-5 “aces” this league has to offer gave up 4 homeruns his last start and has been very mediocre this year.

  87. mel

    SoS,

Congrats to your Spurs. TP said that they were already packed and ready to go to Hollywood. (Of course he has his own place to crash at).

I had no preference before tipoff, but after seeing NO play with that deer in the headlights look I was rooting for them. But to be the best you got to beat the best, so SA is is.

  88. S.A.- Someone call the police, the Yankees offense is missing

    “S.A.,
I read an earlier post where you were rooting for the Hornets to win. Im lost. Doesnt S.A. stand for San Antonio?

    Go Spurs!
    Go Red Wings!
    Go Yankees!”

LOL. Oh No. Just the initials to my name! :)
I’m a Yankees, NY Giants, Rangers, Knicks gal.

Ian – Chad postulated that the manager at SWB wanted to shake things up a bit on the team. Also, I read that they wanted to have Brett go back to driving the ball like he was doing at the beginning of the year and had gotten away from in his recent mini-slump. The last few games he has been back to early season form with BB and XBH.

  90. S.o.S.27

With all the surplus of pitching we have. I cant see how we cant land a good first baseman with a package of young pitching prospects in the minors. Or see what we can get for a Farns or Hawkins.

No on Texiera. Not worth the money. .247 5 homeruns. Miranda can get those numbers.

  91. TKinDC

“D’Antoni will do the honors for the Knicks?”

I think they should send Isiah Thomas in a clown suit. Make him earn some money.

  92. saucY

one of these things is not like the other….

  93. mel

    SA,

You’re one of us? Hmmm. I can usually pick up on that. Tell me, do you support Cashman or not? I think with the exception of G Love, most of the girls here support Cashman.

  94. Joe from Long Island

    Jason – good post above.

Trying to predict baseball is like trying to predict the stock market – past performance does not guarantee future results. Amazing that some are shocked when things don’t go the way we expect.

  95. S.A.- Someone call the police, the Yankees offense is missing

    I totally support CashMoneyMan..
Has he been perfect? No..But who is?

For everyone screaming fire Cashman..all I have to say is…beware what ya wish for.
It might come back and bite ya in the butt.

  96. S.o.S.27

    mel,
My dad is a big Laker fan and living in So Cal. everyone is. I will probably go and watch it with him. Its the best four teams in the league. As it should be. I think its a given its goint 7. May the best team win back to back. Sorry i meant”the best team win”.

I cant stand the flags on car antennas that are out when they are in the playoffs.

Also glad to see the Red Wings not do an 04 on me.

  97. mel

Do you guys think they’ll play tonight? It’s raining here and the forecast doesn’t look good.

  103. Don Vito A. Bellamo

There are exactly 6 teams in ALL of baseball that have a record worse than the Yankees and only ONE team that has a better record than the Cubs. We are in Bizarro World, y’all….reality will be coming back REAL SOON ! :-)

  104. S.o.S.27

    mel,

ManU? Is that Manchester United? Or GINOBLII!!

Red Wings mel. Red Wings. They are the Yankees of Hockey. More Wings fans in away games than home team fans.

  105. Ian

To say the Yankees of Hockey isn’t exactly a good thing.

  106. JoeT - stop going through the motions and play ball!!

    Hopefully Isiah stays in Europe

Mel, no offense, this is just a question, but did you by any chance:

Start watching baseball in the late 90’s? Basketball in the late 90’s/early 00’s? and football in the mid 00’s?

IF yes to the above, that’s just one personality – frontrunner….

  111. saucY

mel, i remembered which teams were yours for the most part.

i can’t get into soccer for the life of me though. even that world cup a couple years ago was a total snooze-fest, if you ask me.

go pistons and penguins. for now at least.

  112. Joey

Work? Seriously, what is that? Don’t know hat I’d do without you and RAB Pete, my day would really suck. And no, no work will get done, I’ll just keep reading that same post over and over again

  113. Nick

S.o.S.27, way to dismiss someone with 1 and a half month’s of a season.

  114. Christine

Have a great time with your parents, Pete!

And I really hope you are right about Alex winning today’s game. :-)

  115. jason

Maybe Theo has his gorilla suit hanging in the closet. I am sure Isiah can borrow it for a day or two.
I am in the give Cashman another few years to let his plan come to fruition.
Raise your mouse if you thought going into the season that the bullpen would be the strength of the team and the offense would suck. Exactly! That is why they play the games.
Cashman’s plan will take a few more years as I have mentioned many times. The pitchers are ahead of the hitters organizationally and are now beginning to make their way and succeed for the big club. The hitters are coming but are a bit down the line AA and A.
We have another draft in a couple of weeks and an international free agent signing period to get excited about. With renewed attention and money the team has built up a farm system quickly. Add the young players, the money for signigs etc and you will see a return to glory.

  116. S.o.S.27

    Nick,
Dont know what you mean by that. But if your referring to Giambi. Then you must of not saw him the last half of 07. Im counting down the days when that rediculous contract is over and we can finally have a real first baseman playing that position.

BTW Cano go the second base job a couple years ago around this time.

  117. saucY

who plays 1st next year if we think Tex will cost too much?

  118. S.o.S.27

  120. randy l.

john henry was in his seats at fenway cheering lester on and being involved with the excitement and energy of the crowd.

i understand that hank and hal don’t want to portray the bully side of george watching over everything, but wouldn’t it be nice if they took in some games to see for themselves and get a feel for the team.

plus wouldn’t it just plain be fun to own the yankees and be there. what’s up with the no show?

  121. FergsKU

I really hope they call this one. We have tickets but don’t want to sit in the rain for nothing.

  122. Ian

LaPorta? I saw that conversation several days back but never commented. That is extremely unlikely. The Brewers can find room for a bat like LaPorta. They can throw him in RF.

  123. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

Yankees, Devils, Jets, Orangemen, Nets, Man U, in that order here.

  124. Jimmy the Saint

  125. Chris NY

In the interest of seeing one of those places that you “have to see,” I’m going to a Royals game at Fenway tonight. I’m working up in Cambridge, Mass, so a colleague of mine got some free tickets. Wish me luck, I’m hoping I don’t melt walking in there…

The good news is that KC “ace” Gil Meche is on the mound!

  126. JoeT - stop going through the motions and PLAY BALL!!

    Yankees….................................................. UCF, Jets/Rangers…....................................................................................................................................................................... { .... } Knicks (not a big basketball fan)

  127. saucY

Chris NY, will you be wearing Yankee attire, purchasing KC attire, or wearing nothing baseball related?

  128. pat

I knew Alex and Minky were friends but never knew Olerud ended up with the Yanks because of Alex until I saw the Yesterdays show a few weeks ago.

Think Alex has anymore friends he could recommend to Cash for 1B?

  129. mel

    Chris,

Not offended at all. I live in a metropolis that has no professional teams at all. So I got to pick and choose.

The Lakers have their training camp here sometimes. I grew up watching the Oilers, but by the time they became the Texans, I had no geographical affiliation with the state. Why not follow Brady and his band of merry offensive linemen? As for the Yankees, I picked up on the sport very late (maybe post dynasty? power of the internet-I love numbers). I like the Yankees because they’re the best organization in all of sports, in all of history. I like their history, their tradition, their values, and how they carry themselves.

If I were a frontrunner (bandwagon) fan I think I would’ve hitched on with the Rockets, the 49’ers (lots of locals played on their championships teams), and the, ugh, Spurs (geographical affiliation), and double ugh Red Sox.

Now, it may or may not be a coincidence that the teams I follow are glamorous. I may be shallow, but still faithful to my teams. Even after the departure of Shaq-Fu. Even after the embarassing Spygate disaster. And yes, even after seven years of the Yankees not producing a single World Series championship. :)

Way TMI (that’s for you, SoS)

  130. Chris NY

saucY, nothing baseball related. For some reason, it irritates me when people are wearing Sox (or any other team) hats at Yankee Stadium when we’re not even playing that team. Not sure why, but it does… So, I’m not going to wear a Yankee hat and would never spend a dime on any other team’s stuff.

I did painfully and reluctantly buy a mets outfit for my cousin’s newborn son because her husband is a huge Mets fan. But that’s as far as I go.

  131. Jax

The Knicks will land the number 2 pick tonight. Gut feeling.

  132. JoeT - stop going through the motions and PLAY BALL!!

heh – i’m still watching the game from last year on YES

how’s this for a quote – “Carl Pavano will get the ball on Monday.”

  133. Chris NY

    Fair enough, Mel. Just checking..

  134. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

I would die and go to heaven if the Nets could land Melo…

  135. saucY

    agreed, Rebecca! :)

  136. Chris NY

saucY, I did, however, consider wearing a Giants (as in NY Football) t-shirt…. but, like I said, I’m going with a colleague (my customer actually), so don’t want it to get ugly with the Boston fans. Some clown throws pizza on me and I end up getting bailed out of jail by my customer for throwing some punk over the railing….... not good.

  137. Chris NY

I guess it’s a pet peeve or whatever, but does anyone else get annoyed with people even wearing other NY stuff at a Yankee game? I see people wearing Giants jerseys and things and, while it’s great they’re supporting NY teams, can’t you pony up the “five bucks, five bucks” for a Yankee t-shirt outside the stadium if you don’t have one??

  138. Scorpio

Rain projected into the evening. We may have a Rain out…not sure if that’s a good or bad thing.

Although I’m dying to see A-Rod back.

  139. mel

    Chris NY,

You should go for it. Lots of lawyers here to defend you.

  140. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

Optimist take: If it is a rain out, we can’t lose!

  141. jennifer

It looks pretty nasty in midtown. Will we get the game in tonight?

  142. russ m

Congrats to Jon Lester, what a nice story. As a Yankee fan, over the past several years, the Red Sox have become a class organization, what the Yanks were about several years ago. Boston has pitching, defense, hitting, bullpen, etc, and should win another title this year. As a Yankee fan, this year has been painful to watch. I am happy when the Yanks get their first hit of the game, that is a moral victory for them. If they get a hit w/RISP, I almost consider that a win, since they are batting .240 w/RISP. If the Yanks score 4 runs, I consder that two victories. Wathcing Duncan, Ensberg, Gonzales, Molina daily is sad for an organization w/$209 million payroll. Now, the last starts by Wang and Pettitte have gown downhill and that is about all we have in starting pitching. Yanks will be lucky to win two games this week. I guess it is another teams turn to have success as the Yanks had theirs before 2001. Heres to getting a hit tonight. Here’s to Abreu no plucking his shirt and afraid of fly balls tonight. Heres to Moose not giving up 5 runs tonight.

  143. yankees62

    S.O.S.27

Are you really a red wings, spurs and Yankee fan? How is that possible?

Right, Moose’s ERA is under 4 which is very surprising. Go MOOSE

  152. Chris NY

speaking of rainouts, does anyone know if I need to do anything with my tickets from Friday night’s game if I want to just use them at the rescheduled game? Do I just show up with those tickets or do I need to exchange them for new tickets to that game?

Yankees in 86 after the Angels blew a 3-1 lead to Boston(more of a reason to hate them). Crushed me as a kid. Favorite player at the time was Mattingly. So i jumped ship.

Spurs-after Jordan retired. Liked the classy orginization.

Red Wings-Like Stevie Y. and Federov

Colts-afer Marino retired. Tried to find someone similiar to him. Hello Manning!!

There you have it. A multi city fan but mine.

The “class organization” that you refer to as the Red Sox has the most classless player in game in left field, a alleged wife beater at shortstop, a 4 times suspended by mlb for anger management issues pitcher,a rookie pitcher who was found guily of stealing a laptop and a General Manager that was named in the Mitchell Report as having knowingly made 2 acquisitions for known steroid users.

John Lester should be celebrated today. It’s a wonderful story. But let’s not pretend that his triumph has anything more to do with the organization than Manny being Manny.

We need to add Carl Pavano to the hate list. It’s wrong to hate on people, I know, but still…it’s Pavano…

  202. pat

    SOS

Why Griffey? That’s not a name usually found on hate lists?

  203. S.o.S.27

    S.A.,
Feel free to hate position players as well. Not just pitchers.

    Mr.C
    Manny
    Hobbitt
    Mr.dl in right
    Cry baby at first

    Just to name a few.

  204. Fran

SA – I agree with your list. But to it I would add the rally monkey in LA!

  205. bpd

    Pete-
Funny thing. When my mother’s in town, as she is tonight, all she wants to do is go to Yanks games.

    Enjoy the show

  206. S.A.- Someone call the police, the Yankees offense is missing

hhhhmm…didn’t realize my hate list was mainly pitchers
    Let’s see..who else:

    Bonds
    McGwire

I think that is it really..

  207. S.o.S.27

    pat,
Griffey screwed the Mariners orginization when he left. He demanded to be traded to a couple teams. So Seattle went with his list and tried to find the best deal out there. Then aftera a few days he comes out and says publically that he would only go to the Reds. At that time the Reds had a package on the table. Once he made his comments they took off Pokey Reese and someone else(i believe). I thought that was really a low blow.

He also left an all star game early saying he wanted to spend time with his kid. Couldnt wait till it was over.

Made it public that he wouldnt play for the Yankees.

Just a spoiled kid. I believe the injuries he has sustained in Cincy has a lot to do with screwing over the Mariners. Karma.

Curt Schilling gets a free pass from me right now. He’s not active right now. But even better, his mouth’s been on the DL, too!

I can forgive Morgan’s senility, but what I can not stand is how race colors his world, analysis, and commentary. Everything is black and white for him. I can understand that, growing up when he did, but jeez enough already.

When is he going to understand that black athletes just don’t play baseball because they can dominate other sports with their athleticism?

  209. S.o.S.27

” I agree with your list. But to it I would add the rally monkey in LA!”

Amen to that. I think they should have a pay per view fight between our right field squarrell and the rally monkey. That would finally put that monkey on the dl. Who’s in!

  210. Joe Schmoe

Jersey Boys is the best show, you may think you’re going to regret seeing it right now, but when you get out you’ll be very happened that you went.

I’m a kid who doesn’t like Broadway, but that show blew my freaking mind.

  211. Russell NY
