Game 46: Orioles at Yankees

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on May 21, 2008 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

YANKEES
Damon LF
Jeter SS
Abreu RF
Rodriguez 3B
Matsui DH
Duncan 1B
Cano 2B
Moeller C
Cabrera CF
Rasner RHP

Darrell Rasner (2-0, 3.00) against the Baltimore hitters.

Garrett Olson (3-0, 3.47) has yet to face any of the Yankees.

Notes: Thanks to Mike Dougherty for calling in the lineup. … That Jeter is one tough hombre. … The Yankees have dropped four straight, six of seven and nine of the last 12. They start the day 7.5 games out of first. … Rare appearance for Shelley Duncan. Remember back when the plan was supposedly to get him 350 ABs to see what he could do? He has 37 ao far.

Enjoy the game.

UPDATED, 6:53 p.m.: Chien-Ming Wang is questionable for his start on Saturday. He strained his right calf covering first base on Sunday. They’re going to see how his bullpen goes tomorrow before making any decisions. Wang had an MRI that revealed a Grade 1 (or mild) strain.

UPDATE, 6:57 p.m.: Jeter told reporters he was fine, which is what you expect. … No word on any suspension for LaTroy Hawkins yet. Joe Girardi said that Hawkins was only pitching inside. Sure thing.

UPDATE, 8:19 p.m.: Hey, looked who showed up, it’s the Yankees. … It’s fairly amazing that A-Rod doesn’t see MLB pitching for three weeks then hit two homers in two days. … Think Darrell Rasner will get skipped again?

UPDATE, 9:14 p.m.: That’s a home run by A-Rod. Again, this is why you need replay for home runs.

UPDATE, 9:28 p.m.: Wow, Darrell Rasner. 19 innings, 4 ERs. This from a guy they DFA’d last fall. You just never know with pitchers.

UPDATE, 9:57 p.m.: Hmm, very interesting that Joba Chamberlain is staying in for the ninth inning with the game out of hand. This will burn him out for tomorrow.

I would guess that going two innings is part of ramping up his innings to prepare him to start.

peter you use the keyboard like me..

gimabi off day with the lefty..

left right thru the whole order also Moeller knows Rasner..

to bad we lose Molina’s bat tonight!!!!!!!

  2. Stephen May 21st, 2008 at 3:47 pm

Giambi/Duncan HAS to be the single worst platoon on any team in baseball.

  3. mark May 21st, 2008 at 3:47 pm

    who’s this “duncan” guy?

  4. Bob May 21st, 2008 at 3:47 pm

    Facing another lefty tonight. Ugh.

  5. Amar May 21st, 2008 at 3:48 pm

What has Shelly done to deserve to be that high in the lineup. Girardi is clueless. Fine, he’s a right, start him, but why throw him in the middle of the lineup. He’s prob the only go in MLB history to either never play, or to only bat 4th or 5th in a lineup. SO FRUSTRATING.

  6. chazzh May 21st, 2008 at 3:48 pm

I like Melky hitting ninth- maybe that will get him going again.

  7. canocabrera May 21st, 2008 at 3:48 pm

    Ugh!

  8. canocabrera May 21st, 2008 at 3:49 pm

Duncan should be moved down, hes done nothing, move Melky up as well.

Good to see Jete in the lineup!

  9. SJ44 May 21st, 2008 at 3:49 pm

There is a method to the madness.

Damon is an awful LF so, keep him close to Melky.

Arod probably gets to more balls than Abreu in RF.

Kind of like a softball defense.

We just need Jeet to be the shortfielder!

    Its all good.

  10. nemo May 21st, 2008 at 3:49 pm

I hope the offense performs like they did last night. Now that A-Rod is back in the lineup, everyone else really exploded and hit they way they used to.

    Oh wait, that didn’t happen?

  11. EricVA May 21st, 2008 at 3:50 pm

Garrett Olsen has yet to face any of the Yankees…

You know what that means. No hitter into the 4th or 5th followed by an 0-5 with RISP.

  12. al arodien May 21st, 2008 at 3:50 pm

wow! the yankees finally realise that abreu cant chatch the ball in right field so a-rod will field all balls that go near the wall…………

  13. Wendall May 21st, 2008 at 3:50 pm

If only Damon and Giambi could have career ending injuries this team could take a turn for the better.

  14. Bob May 21st, 2008 at 3:50 pm

Amar, which of the tremendously hot hitting Yankees would you prefer hitting where Duncan is?

Do some of you ever think before you start your whining?

  15. Joe from Long Island May 21st, 2008 at 3:51 pm

Makes my point about Shelley not being given a chance. A handful of ABs every 5 games does not provide an adequate opportunity. Give him a week to show what he can do. It’s not like Jason is tearing the cover off the ball.

  16. Joe May 21st, 2008 at 3:51 pm

    SJ,
It’s obvious what Girardi is doing, A-Rod is playing deep RF and the wall, while Abreu plays shallow right and away from his biggest weakness…the wall!

  17. jennifer May 21st, 2008 at 3:51 pm

Damit! I was hoping to see Brett Gardners name penciled in at left!

  18. EricVA May 21st, 2008 at 3:51 pm

    SJ:

I’m pretty sure we DID use this defensive allignment in my softball league. That was because, you know, there were girls in RF and 2B

  19. stuart May 21st, 2008 at 3:51 pm

wendall relax.. serious think before you post….

  20. chazzh May 21st, 2008 at 3:52 pm

    Lefty tonight Garrett Olsen
    LEfty tomorrow _ Brian Burres
    Lefty Friday _ Eric Bedard.

It is just me or have they face a disproportionate amount of lefties in the last 3-4 weeks?

  21. Nick in SF May 21st, 2008 at 3:53 pm

oops, I posted this at the end of the previous thread:

“…Uffizi Museum. It includes an exact replica of the statue of David (which is kept inside).”

Typical Brian (Red Sox fan) passive/aggressive propaganda.
Everyone knows the David isn’t in the Uffizi, it’s in the Gallery of the Accademia. How stupid do you think we are, Brian??? Sheesh.

Also, yes, the Whig Party’s remnants were part of the foundation of the Republican Party. Abraham Lincoln was a member of both the Illinois House of Representatives and the U.S. House as a member of the Whig Party. He joined the new Republican Party in the 1850’s.

There’s a song by the indie pop band Belle & Sebastian called “Piazza, New York Catcher” — the only mention of him in the song is in this line “Piazza, New York catcher, are you straight or are you gay?” , a reference to the “I’m not gay!” NY Post headline of a few years ago.

Randy l., I recommended a great restaurant in Florence to young Rebecca in a thread yesterday. It’s called Trattoria Sostanza, I can give you more info about it if you’d like.

  22. EricVA May 21st, 2008 at 3:53 pm

“If only Damon and Giambi could have career ending injuries this team could take a turn for the better”

Great! So then Betemit can play 1B every day when he gets off the DL and Duncan can reach 100 K’s this year. That is certainly better, you’re right.

  23. S.A.- Someone call the police, the Yankees offense is missing May 21st, 2008 at 3:53 pm

    Ugh
    Just win somehow.

  24. Laura May 21st, 2008 at 3:54 pm

Uh oh. Another guy we haven’t faced before. I’m already depressed and the game hasn’t even started yet!

  25. stuart May 21st, 2008 at 3:54 pm

bob they whine regardless.. you give Shelly some AB’s they have been whining about that are they happy no. they are not happy where he is hitting in the lineup…

Bob see the team has been so clutch and so hot they cannot understand why Girardi would change things up!!!!!!!

  26. carolinanyy May 21st, 2008 at 3:54 pm

How many different lineups does this one make?

  27. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 11 ) May 21st, 2008 at 3:57 pm

Kevin Maas Jr. at 1B :(

  28. Laura May 21st, 2008 at 3:57 pm

“If only Damon and Giambi could have career ending injuries this team could take a turn for the better.”

As disappointed as I am with both of these men’s performance on the field, your post is a horrible thing to say… even if you were joking. I think that sometimes, we baseball fans forget that this is a job for these guys. Yeah, it’s a kid’s game, but it’s still how they make a living. Wishing for either of them to have their careers end is the same as wishing blindness on a bus driver. Yes, both Damon and Giambi are millionaires and could survive several years w/o making another dime – that’s no excuse for your hateful post. I very rarely rag on people’s posts, but with the economy and the state of this country being the way it is, this one just rubbed me the wrong way.

  29. baka May 21st, 2008 at 3:57 pm

to bad we lose Molina’s bat tonight

  30. Bob May 21st, 2008 at 3:58 pm

Shelly’s going deep tonight, I’m calling it.

Of course the Yanks will probably be down 9-1 in the 8th at the time, but still. :)

  31. Bob May 21st, 2008 at 4:00 pm

Yeah, it’s a kid’s game, but it’s still how they make a living. Wishing for either of them to have their careers end is the same as wishing blindness on a bus driver. Oh please. Get off your soapbox. If it happens we’ll take up a collection for them.

I don’t wish harm on anyone, but these guys have “stolen” so much money from the Yankees and as paying fans us as well. The team has proven they are better off without Giambi.

  32. Sara May 21st, 2008 at 4:01 pm

funny…everyone is complaing about the line-up but in reality does it matter? these guys aren’t hitting period. does it matter who is first, second, third etc….
they need to just win, regardless of the batting order and whose hitting 5th or 6th….i haven’t seen anyone hit fifth or sixth who has done any better.

  33. nemo May 21st, 2008 at 4:01 pm

I think everyone should just be excessively negative in the hopes that we’ll jinx the Yanks into playing better baseball.

  34. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 11 ) May 21st, 2008 at 4:03 pm

Duncan will have 2 K’s and a popup before being lifted for a PH.

I’m just wondering if Jetes ends up w/ 1 or 2 GIDP, I guess it depends on Damon

  35. melky28 May 21st, 2008 at 4:03 pm

We are almost 14 games out…

  36. G, Love May 21st, 2008 at 4:05 pm

We got Darrell “The Stopper” Rasner going tonight.

Just get 5 runs out of the offense somehow and we win tonight.

With all the time off they’ve gotten, Mo and Joba can go 3 each tonight so Rasner only needs to pitch 3 good innings, lol.

I feel like I haven’t seen Mo in a month.

  37. Yankee lover May 21st, 2008 at 4:06 pm

At this point Duncan should be platooning with Giambi and his 200 lineup. I like Jeter leading off and batting AROD 3rd.

  38. Vigorish Vic May 21st, 2008 at 4:06 pm

The Vegas line is now set at 5 1/2 to 8 that Damon will have a 20 hop throw to the infield.
No line established on throws to the plate.

  39. Bob May 21st, 2008 at 4:07 pm

I read that Abreu is gonna start wrapping him self in bubblewrap before going into the field.

“I want to help the team defensively, but that wall is just so darn scary” he said.

  40. melky28 May 21st, 2008 at 4:07 pm

If jeter can’t make a clean throw to first, he does not have yo blame it on cano, a** w****

  41. Doreen May 21st, 2008 at 4:08 pm

when you show up late to the party, you miss all the good jokes! By the time I got here, Pete corrected his typos, but I never read the position letters after the names, so I really thought they did put ARod in right field. Laugh’s on me.

(Heck, we’ve been discussing so many possible “solutions,” why not ARod in RF – except he shouldn’t really be running that much yet, right?)

  42. S.A.- Someone call the police, the Yankees offense is missing May 21st, 2008 at 4:09 pm

I guess you turned off the disaster last night pretty early. Mo got some work in

  43. Bryan May 21st, 2008 at 4:09 pm

Never seen the guy and he is a lefty we all know how this one will end… see you guys tomorrow

  44. melky28 May 21st, 2008 at 4:10 pm

Rasner with his 20 days of rest will stink….

  45. Steph May 21st, 2008 at 4:10 pm

Here’s to hoping that they win today because I’m actually going to have a chance to watch the game…first time in nearly a week.

  46. The Ghost of Andy Fox May 21st, 2008 at 4:11 pm

I want someone to tell me that the Yankees sincerely have a legitimate shot at finishing 25-30 games over .500 with our current rotation.

That’s really what it comes down to. Look at Toronto, Tampa, Boston, LAA pitching staffs – measurably better than ours. We have 1 1/2 guys who can be counted on to give us a chance to win. Everyone else is a question mark.

Whine or accept it. I’ve accepted it. This is a .500 team.

Try to enjoy the season as best you can and hope that we’re back contending in 09′ or more likely ’10 (and dealing with Lester, Masterson, Bucholz, Price, Garza, Kazmir, Shields).

  47. Bob May 21st, 2008 at 4:12 pm

Never seen the guy and he is a lefty we all know how this one will end… see you guys tomorrow

Ain’t that the truth. Don’t worry though, the Yanks are great at working the count and getting pitch counts up, so at least they’ll get him out of there relatively early.

(I could barely type that with a straight face.)

  48. raymagnetic ®™ May 21st, 2008 at 4:12 pm

“I’m just wondering if Jetes ends up w/ 1 or 2 GIDP, I guess it depends on Damon”

Being that he’s only had 5 GDP’s this year I’m taking the under.

  49. Laura May 21st, 2008 at 4:13 pm

“The team has proven they are better off without Giambi.”

That’s not the point. No one wants Giambi off the team more than I do. But I most certainly don’t wish him bodily harm. There are ways to get him off the team w/o ending his career.

And as for me getting off of my soapbox, as long as this is the USA, I’ll continue to post here and say whatever the heck I want. You don’t like it, skip my posts.

Duncan has 37 too many ABs this year. He is clearly AAAA Club Material….maybe they should create AAAA baseball, huh ?…Yankees start a LONG winning streak tonight…Captain comes back from a nasty strike to the hand, A-Rod in the lineup…I sense double digits on the board FOR the Yankees tonight !!! ;-)

  52. Bob May 21st, 2008 at 4:15 pm

Laura I got cut off there. I was gonna say:

And I’ll continue to tell you you’re being ridiculous and over dramatic. Fair Enough?

  53. Bob May 21st, 2008 at 4:16 pm

    10 errors? Oh boy.

  54. Nick in SF May 21st, 2008 at 4:19 pm

Hey S.A., where is this Giants road to the Super Bowl package available? I’d like to get it for my dad, he missed most of the games and asked me right after the SB whether I had recorded them. That would be a great Fathers Day gift.

over or under that Cano swings at the first pitch in one of his ABs tonight, over or under that Joba comes in to save a 6-2 defecit ?

  57. Nick in SF May 21st, 2008 at 4:25 pm

    Awesome, thanks. I love this:

  58. 2008 Yankees May 21st, 2008 at 4:25 pm

Why can’t we get alphabet back at first?? I mean really, he is playing 3B nowadays!

I like the way the lineup is set, not necessarily the guys but switching back and forth with L and R.

I think they score 10 runs tonight anyway…..and Shelley will even hit one out.

  59. D ( YANKEES FAN, who CARES what a BoSux Fan thinks ! ) May 21st, 2008 at 4:26 pm

  61. Pepitone May 21st, 2008 at 4:27 pm

I posted this on the other thread:

    Here are my suggestions:
LF Gardner, bench Damon use him as on a rotating basis.
RF Abreu, i.e. until we can get someone else to take his place this year. I don’t care, trade or minor league call up, just get him out of there.
CF Melky, but I would not be opposed to moving him to right and putting Jeter out there.
    3b Rodriguez
    SS Jeter
2b Cano for now, but look at possible trade scenarios because he is a player of value.
1b Giambi for now, but platoon him with Shelly.
    C Posada
Starting Pitching: Wang, Pettite (but he is weakening with every start), Chamberlain (soon!), Kennedy, Hughes. Mussina for spot starting and long relief.
The relief pitching looks ok to me, nice mix of vets and youth.
Other than that, I don’t think the Yankees can do much else. Play it out and hope for the best. Bring up youngsters (e.g. Gardner) to see what we got, make a trade that makes us younger, not older, and start disciplining players who are not gettin it (you listening Cano?).

I would be interested to know what some of you think we should do with the lineup.

  62. NYPD113th May 21st, 2008 at 4:27 pm

    Shelley Maas

  63. S.A.- Someone call the police, the Yankees offense is missing May 21st, 2008 at 4:28 pm

Yup! That’s it. Can’t wait to get it.

Starting to rain here in Central Jersey. Oh no?

  64. S.o.S.27 May 21st, 2008 at 4:29 pm

Im going to ask for a favor from some stat guys in here. Can someone tell me what the record of the Yanks are with and without Giambi in the last 2 years. For some reason we seem to get on a streak when he’s not around. I could be wrong. Thanks.

The only thing i would change in this lineup is Damon benched. Gardner in.

  65. NYSuperFan May 21st, 2008 at 4:32 pm

Jeter is a savage playing after last night….I love it.

Starting to rain here NJ….hope we get this one in tonight. Im on anniversary detail but I should be able to catch some of it.

  66. Micky#7--Old Ranger May 21st, 2008 at 4:33 pm

We will be without Optimist Prime (going on a very nice European trip). Have a nice and happy trip Rebeeca.
People seem to think this team needs an injection of youth and speed, I do too. I have been bringing the name of Brett/Justin up for weeks and weeks, why not? We could use a replacement for one of the corner OFs’. They are to slow and don’t hit any better then those in AAA, even less maybe. Being a realist, I must confess Cash has much more information then we do, maybe he has something in the works we don’t know of. Cano, Johnny, Bobby and Jason seem to be at the epicenter of our trouble this year, I disagree to some extent. These guys are older and slower of foot and bat. They are still good, but why not try someone else…just a little speed, please! 27/08?

  67. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 11 ) May 21st, 2008 at 4:38 pm

Jetes also made one savage throw to first base too badd Jack and his beanstalk wasn’t there

  68. Jerkface May 21st, 2008 at 4:39 pm

Jeter has only hit into 5 double plays, but he is on pace for 20. Which would be the second highest amount in his career.

  69. raymagnetic ®™ May 21st, 2008 at 4:42 pm

    Brandon,

Seriously, what is your issue with Derek Jeter?

I have never seen another team in any sport where fans dislike HOF players that came up through their stystems as much as some NY Yankee fans dislike their players. It’s really unbelievable to me.

Jeter was one of the few players on the Yankees who actually put up better numbers while A-Rod was out.

  70. Laura May 21st, 2008 at 4:42 pm

“I think they score 10 runs tonight anyway…..and Shelley will even hit one out.”

From your mouth to God’s ears.

  71. S.o.S.27 May 21st, 2008 at 4:44 pm

Come on Brandon. I know your more of an Arod guy. But Cano messed that play up. I dont want to hear that he was shifted more to his left. Jeter never shows up any of his teammates. So for him to react to Cano the way he did. Was all we needed to know. Yes. He should have made a better throw. But throwing to second is an easier out than first. Cano needs to stop day dreaming out there.

Asked this earlier. Did Arod look like he wasnt running right to first on that error throw. He seemed to be forcing it IMO.

  72. Laura May 21st, 2008 at 4:45 pm

“I have never seen another team in any sport where fans dislike HOF players that came up through their stystems as much as some NY Yankee fans dislike their players. It’s really unbelievable to me. Jeter was one of the few players on the Yankees who actually put up better numbers while A-Rod was out.”

True. I think it’s perception. Someone posted that Jeets only hit into 5 DPs this year. I’ve watched every game this season and I thought that number was low. To me, it seemed like he was hitting into one at least once a game. I guess it just SEEMS like he’s always hitting into DPs.

  73. Bob May 21st, 2008 at 4:46 pm

I’m as big a fan of Jeter as there is, but his throws to first all season have left a lot to be desired.

  74. Chet May 21st, 2008 at 4:47 pm

Why can’t Girardi use Gonzalex at 2B vs. lefties. Cano needs to sit on pine until he can show that he is ready to get his head back in the game.

I would also use Ensberg over Shelly at 1B.

It is time to trade Damon and send the Big Packing.

    Chet

  75. stuart May 21st, 2008 at 4:48 pm

Petpitone my opinion is you are out of your mind… Jeter is not Luis Aparicio or Vizquel but he is not moving to the outfield and they have bigger issues then his range…

this team won 94 games last yr… this is not a terrible team, they may be playing terrible but they are not terrible..

you want to sit down a damon or a giambi and see if gardner can do something that is reasonable but your moves are hysterical..

Cano is a schmo that is true but he is 25 and a lifetime 307 hitter, relax…

add gardner if you can trade a damon for prospects that is fine but you are not moving 3 starters during the year.. I do agree with Joba to the rotation and having melancon, or cox, or whomever come up and go to the pen..

If the yanks are out of it in july then you dump; damon, abreu, kyle, anyone with age that you can and anyone with a expiring contract or Matsui if someone will give you fair value back but that is in at least 45 games at a minimum…

  76. Jerkface May 21st, 2008 at 4:48 pm

There is no way that Cano can be considered as having anything more than POSSIBLY a 5% impact on Jeter’s throwing error.

Seriously, stop making excuses for the Captain.

In the replays I saw Jeter was looking straight ahead the entire time fielding the ball and throwing.

Its not like he stopped, turned around, didn’t see Cano, got scared, and threw the ball away.

He was making a routine play, should have made it.

He has been throwing bad all season long.

“Cano needs to stop day dreaming out there. ”

Cano needs to stop doing a lot of things. I had no idea how much of an influence Larry Bowa had on him. I mean, what else explains his play? He is constantly swinging at balls that are at his ankles. It’s almost like he’s not even looking at the balls. His play at 2B is spotty – he’ll make an amazing play followed by a bad one. I don’t know if signing that big contract did him in, but he’s got to get his act together.

As for the play last night, yeah he should have been there, but DJ should have been able to recover and make a decent throw to 2B. It’s not like he hasn’thrown over there 50,000 times before!

  79. Mitch May 21st, 2008 at 4:49 pm

Pepitone, I have a question for you: Have you ever watched a baseball game? Or, more accurately, do you pay any attention to how teams manipulte their personnel?

You’re ready to bench Damon, who has lousy but at least Major League numbers, but leave Giambi and Duncan at first, even though they’re both sub-.200 hitters.

Career starters like Damon and Mussina can’t just be moved to reserve/relief roles. Baseball doesn’t work that way. You can’t have that in a clubhouse. If you bring up Gardner and stick him in left, that’s a commitment. If/when Gardner bats. .180 and you send him down, do you just say, “oops” and ask Damon to come back?

Goodness gracious, baseball is a 162-game season. Damon has a bad week and a half and you’re ready to replace him with a guy that doesn’t even rank on anyone’s top prospect list. Gardner is Bubba Crosby with a better publicist. (Okay, he’s better than Crosby, but not much.)

And Cano has hit at or beyond .300 for three seasons, and the guy gets off to a bad start and you’re ready to unload him. And play who at second? The attorney general and his career .277 BA/.329 OBP … in the minors!?!?!

I could go on and on … I just wish people were realistic when talking about moves the Yanks could/should make.

  80. Bob May 21st, 2008 at 4:49 pm

What exactly has Ensberg done to make you think he merits playing time over Duncan?

Not that either is a great option, but complaining about one over the other seems pointless to me.

  81. S.o.S.27 May 21st, 2008 at 4:49 pm

FYI. Jeter is leading the team in batting average.312. For all the hitting slumps accross this lineup. He is still hitting over .300. Even though some think he hasnt fully healed from that leg injury.

  82. LathamJoe May 21st, 2008 at 4:49 pm

“People seem to think this team needs an injection of youth and speed, I do too.”

Youth and speed will only go so far. If you hit .160 with RISP, all the youth and speed in the world won’t help!

This Yankee Team has the offensive talent to score. It just needs to start stepping up and performing.
That and some consistent starting pitching!

  84. Laura May 21st, 2008 at 4:50 pm

I also think that Jeter may be trying to make a more perfect thrown with Giambi over there. He’s not exactly your ordinary 1B.

  85. Nick in SF May 21st, 2008 at 4:51 pm

I think Jeter is pretty good.

I also think he has bigger fans than Bob.

  86. Jerkface May 21st, 2008 at 4:53 pm

    Laura:

Giambi has saved more errors for Jeter than anyone else playing first. He stretches and scoops with the best of em. He just lacks defensive range and gloveness for regular plays.

  87. Doreen May 21st, 2008 at 4:54 pm

Repost from Previous Thread: Regarding Jeter/Cano play of last night.

Why is it not even considered that (a) Jeter looked to see if Cano had managed to get there, even knowing he was playing in the hole, and when he wasn’t there, decided to go with plan b, the throw to first, but made a bad throw; and (b) Jeter was p-o’d at himself for making a bad throw?

Why is everything made so over-complicated with subplots and malicious feelings towards teammates. It is possible that it was Jeter who was not aware of where exactly Robby was. Just opening the door to that possibility.

It’s like the kid in school who never did anything wrong, so when he did every once in awhile, not only did he not take any “punishment,” but other people were often blamed.

The throw stank and there was plenty of time for him to make a good throw; he knew it, and he was upset with himself.

There is so much blame to go around right now on this Yankees team. No one is consistently having a good inning, let a lone a good game, and forget about a stretch of good games. Everyone has made their share of both physical and mental errors and no one has done well at the plate with RISP.

  88. Doreen May 21st, 2008 at 4:55 pm

I would just add that the YES camera was not focused on Robby, so unless you were at the game and watching Cano on that play, you wouldn’t really know EXACTLY where he was in the field, nor would you know whether or not he broke to cover second too late, nor would you know if he moved too slow to get there. Just sayin’ is all. :)

  89. gayle May 21st, 2008 at 4:56 pm

explain me this is it because of the $$ he is making .How is it when everyone can always use pitching how Julian Tavaerz made it through waivers and now he will accept an assignment with the AAA team so now the Sox will trade himand actually get something in return.

WHy not claim him and not have to give anything up in a trade

    Doreen. Good point.

  93. Doreen May 21st, 2008 at 5:00 pm

    Jerkface-

I agree with your assessment of Giambi. Giambi’s asset at 1B has always been fielding bad throws. His deficit is, as you state, no range for the out of the ordinary play or even the slightly more difficult play. And Jeter has been throwing to Giambi at 1B, on and off, for a few years now. Anyway, I love Derek Jeter, but he made a really bad throw last night.

Eric Wilbur is the biggest joke of any writer in Boston. Im a fan of Gammons (once in a while) and Shaughnessy(sp?), but Wilbur is garbage. No one up there takes him seriously in the least. I went to UMass and have close friends still in Boston and if they even bother to read his nonsensical writing they take it with about as much validity as something coming from Curt Schilling….and they’re die hard Red Sox Fans. This guy is a “B” writer at best.

  95. Nick in SF May 21st, 2008 at 5:00 pm

Doreen, you and I were on the same “plenty of blame to go around” wavelength and that goes for that play too. I didn’t even see it, as my DirecTV was out for the game, but maybe Jeter was mad at Cano for being out of position, maybe he was mad at himself for a bad throw, and maybe he was mad at Yankeeworld in general. Lots of things can factor into a momentary frown. I think the team will survive a little show of negative emotion from the Captain.

Julian Tavarez is AWFUL! Last year as a Long Reliever/Spot Starter in 134 IP, he put up a ERA of 5.15 and a WHIP of 1.50. So far in 2008, he has posted a 6.39 ERA and a horrendous WHIP of 2.13 – all that for a “tidy” sum of $3.85 Million.
For a long releiver/spot starter, a GM would have to be crazy not to use one of their MiLB propsects at the Minimum League salary rather than sign Tavarez.

    NY Super fan.

A B grade for Wilbur is generous. I read that in the Globe a few hours ago and threw up a little bit in my mouth. Too much pitching? Are you kidding me. Colon this eve. Again, Colon this eve. Great story by Lester Monday but he has not proven to be a guy that can consistenly pitch more than 5-6 innings a start. Bucholtz has shown signs of being OK but would I count on him in September? No chance. Masterson? Two solid big league starts but his last few starts at AA Portland he has been knocked around.

Did I mention Colon is on the hill this eve?

Sorry for any baseball fan that had to read that crap.

As I said in a previous thread the best thing about Colon this eve is that watching the game I will feel thin and handsome.

    Have a good night.

Jeepers, Jeeter made a bad throw. Do we put every error under the microscope? It’s not like he or others have never committed an error before. And if you have played the game you know how it feels when you do. But you pick yourself up and get the next play. It happens get over it. As a player you have to and as a fan you have to. I have never read so much nonsense in my life as what spews on this blog some times. When you are a fan you root for your team. You understand what a humbling experience it is when things are not going great but you don’t root against your guys. You also understand how great it is when things are going great. You root for your team. You root for the spirit of your team and not criticize every freaking move or lack of move. You may think it fun to wish illness or injury on another but no one else does. How would you like your life picked apart the way you do our players. Do you think it would be fun to watch you work and analyze your mistakes. True fans don’t behave that way. Sorry, if you don’t like the Yankees go to another team. I was born in the Bronx and am proud of it and proud of the Yankee tradition.

The guys that helped track him down and return the bag? Well he left the people responsible THE BIG DONUT–GOOSE EGG–kinda makes it tough to root for these over payed schmucks.

So this bag w/150,000 dollars in it was returned. Now A-ROD is the talk of ST.Pete Beach how a guy that makes all that money could be surrounded by dopes and cheap bastard…….I KID YOU NOT GUYS………

  106. SJ44 May 21st, 2008 at 5:14 pm

    I’ll say this about Jeter…..

He is the ONLY player whose numbers improved with Arod and Posada got hurt.

In other words, he’s the only guy who stepped up.

He made a bad error last night.

It happens but, of all the problems facing this team, Derek Jeter isn’t one of them.

Put it another way, is Jeter having a worse year than Damon, Giambi, Cano, and Pettitte? Nope.

If you want to place blame as to why this team is in last place, hit the right targets. Jeter ain’t one of them.

Wanted your oppinion on something. For the last couple years we’ve had problems finding a lefty in the pen. What do you think of maybe seeing if Chase Wright can do the job. Im not saying today or tomorrow. But it doesnt look like he will have the shot at starting for us again. His numbers arent that bad this year and its either trade him or do an Ohlendorf. Where we make him usefull.

  112. russ m May 21st, 2008 at 5:22 pm

Does anyone really care about the Yanks at this point? They are dead last, 7.5 games behind. Only two teams have worse records in the AL. Let’s get the posts done now. Facing a lefty, Yanks will score about 2 runs. Rasner will give up about 5 runs at least. A Rod will hit a HR in the 8th inning, so we will be behind 4 or more runs. Yanks lose. Anything else that needs to be said?

  113. LathamJoe May 21st, 2008 at 5:23 pm

I, for one, was not blaming or disparaging Jeter for his throw. stuff happens. I greatly admire Derek Jeter. Without him there is no 1996-2001 run or 13 straight Post Season appearances.

My posts about Jeter’s play were only in defense of Robbie Cano and the idiots that call him “lazy” and “has no heart” on a play where they could not see Cano’s postioning.

it’s not about Jeter making an error and most posters in fact most of my fellow NYY fans have thier nose so brown w/ Jetes you know what when it comes to his errors at SS, I’ve said this for some time it’s not about me hating him , I don’t hate Jetes it’s not like that it’s his BS fans that I can’t stand, the error last night had about 1% to do w/ Robi Cano, Ken Singleton blind as a bat when it came to calling that play right, blamed it on a miscoverage by Cano, REALLY ! did Robi take Jetes hand and force a fail mary to 1B ! No ! Robinson Cano was playing proper D he played in the hole to stop a LHB from getting a basehit into RF instead what happened was a weak grounder to SS and Jetes instead of making the simple throw to 1B got mentally stupid and tried to force a DP lost grip then overthrew it to 1B off line ! either you take it to the bag and throw to 1B or just take a step and throw it to 1B ! don’t frickin’ force a situation causing a collision or take out slide on Robi at 2B..that’s is my issue, Girardi asked for a few things prior to this game “we need to play better D, we need to hit better and pitch better” first inning Capt. Do No Wrong screws up on defense the YES booth tried to figure out a way to blame it on Cano, btm. of the first we’re down 7-0 trying to start a rally Capt. Do No Wrong take 2 GIDP killing any momentum then came a trickle down effect..ENOUGH FRICKIN EXCUSES, THAT’S WHAT GETS ME, ANYONE ELSE WE LAMBAST, WHEN IT’S JETES FIND SOMEONE ELSE TO BLAME ! Now you get me ?

Damon and Giambi both have OPS+ over 110 this season which is more than Jeter or Melky or Cano can say.

i’m down with Shelley being in the lineup, but what’s up with Girardi putting him so high in the lineup? No way should he be in the first 6. Shelley isn’t equipped to protect the latter part of the lineup. This is another move that doesn’t make sense.

Thanks, SJ44, I appreciate that. I think I have said it, but I enjoy reading your posts quite a bit too, I’ve learned an awful lot about the squad and the farm system from your posts in particular among others.

As I’ve written, my number one reason for posting here and following along during games is to enhance my overall enjoyment, which includes cracking jokes and the comeraderie and all that. Even when things are going badly for the team, there’s usually some amount of pleasure to be found in following along on here. A little less so when posters get after each other from time to time, but enough about that.

Back to the Cano question. There’s a difference between an excuse and a reason. Is Larry Bowa’s absence an [excuse] for any mental lapses or hitting funks ?
Supposedly, Robby Cano is a professional baseball player. Should he be coddled to perform to his abilities ? Should he be told Mother Goose rhymes before the start of games ? How much time does he spend with Kevin Long going over video of his at bats or in the batting cage ?
Maybe the [reason] is his lack of mental toughness to perform to his talent level ?

I might have agreed with what you said this team doesn’t have, at least right now, but then you threw in “loyalty,” and there, I have to say, you absolutely lost me.

With everything that has been going on and not going on, not one Yankee, not a player, not a pitcher, not the manager and not a coach, has pointed a finger at “the other guy.” Each one that’s been interviewed, in any event, has taken or shared blame for whatever went wrong. Jeter made a bad throw to 1st. If anyone knows anything about throwing to a base, please step up! When you are going to make the toss to 2nd, you grab and toss…in other words, as close as he was to 2nd, he may not have had the optimal grip on the ball. When he saw that he had to throw to 1st, there wasn’t time to re-grip the ball, and it sailed on him. Fact not fiction! I have done the same thing myself. If you look at the play, he had to hurry the throw, therefore he blew it…big time. No ones’ fault other then the throw was bad, no excuses. 27/08?

that’s one thing I agree w/ my eyes are getting very pissed off watching Cano struggling basically every swinger struggling in hitting basics and Kevin Long is where exactly, what is he doing right now, the principals of hitting have not been the same since Rick Downs was fired. 133. gayle May 21st, 2008 at 5:56 pm

Here is the problem with blaming the hitting coach.Where were all the Kevin Long haters when robbie batted well over 300 the second half of the year.Dont think I saw many of them when that was happening. Somehow it becomes the hitting coache’s fault when they team doesnt hit but when they do it is all about the players having great at bats, the players being great hitters. In this instance dont really think Kevin Long is the reason why this team isnt doing well.

Funny how everyone was raving about how great a hitting coach Long is before the season began. Now that nobody on the team is hitting fans look for an easy scapegoat and find Long. Theres only so much a coach can do, blame the players, not Kevin Long.

one of my more fun times there was when a red sox fan sucker punched me and i head butted his fist on purpose. first fight i ever won without throwing a punch.

so stop by the gallery on your way there. i’m sure we can have a nice baseball talk.
we can even throw the ball around if you’re up to it. i have a catcher’s mask
you can wear if you need it.

It’s a given that at the conclusion of this season, Pavano’s sad contract will be off the books and also :

. Giambi will be given his $5M buyout.

. Mussina will not be offered another contract.

    . Ditto Farnsworth.

. Abreu is up for debate pending what his output is for the balance of this year.

. Much the same with Pettitte plus the stance the team will take with Sabathia or another lefthander VIA the trade route.

. Damon will positively not be a fit on the 2009 team. Take the best possible deal and realize it will have to be supplemeted with some $$$.

. Matsui could be kept in his final contract year but turn down no reasonable offer.

  140. Jerkface May 21st, 2008 at 6:07 pm

So I’m watching MLB.TV , and Jeter was playing deep second and was running on contact. He made it to the bag just as the runner made it to the bag(who was going on movement).

Jeter looked over at 2nd before he even fielded the ball to see if Cano was there.

    The facts.

    Draw your own conclusions.

From Chad Jennings’ excellent SWB Yankees blog (on McCutchen’s promotion to SWB):

    http://tinyurl.com/67vhfc

“And no, I don’t think McCutchen is going to the bullpen. Based on a few conversations, I feel confident that he’s going to be a starter, and given the New York rotation concerns, he might have more immediate value as a starter. Might be a reliever at some point, but for now it’s better to have him starting.”

Quote 1: “If only Damon and Giambi could have career ending injuries this team could take a turn for the better”

Quote 2: “Great! So then Betemit can play 1B every day when he gets off the DL and Duncan can reach 100 K’s this year. That is certainly better, you’re right.”

No, the Yanks would then sign Barry Bonds and he’ll hit 30 homers with a .450 on-base percentage in 400 plate appearances.

Jeter was the first one to accept responsibility for the throwing error when questioned in the clubhouse. These guys are human, not robots or machines. 99 times out of 100 he’ll make the play. The one time he doesn’t, he gets blamed for the entire loss? His defense has been better than last year and he leads the team in BA. Cut the guy some slack and let’s move on.

  164. Steve May 21st, 2008 at 6:41 pm

Doreen, you mean Psychoanalysis or Psychoterapy. Psychology has an effect on everyone whether they buy into it or not.

  165. Stormrider6 May 21st, 2008 at 6:41 pm

I’m surprised no one really commented on Giambi’s mustache growing experiment… He did hit safely twice last night, so maybe the rest of the team should follow in his footsteps. Imagine a lineup full of mustache-faced Yankees! We’d be unstoppable!

  166. Laura May 21st, 2008 at 6:42 pm

“Giambi has saved more errors for Jeter than anyone else playing first. He stretches and scoops with the best of em. He just lacks defensive range and gloveness for regular plays.”

Gloveness for regular plays? You mean like throwing to 2B? This is basic 1B stuff and he can’t do it. I don’t care how many balls he scoops up. His crappy play in every other 1B facet of the game negates all of that.

Nick in SF – re: your posting of 3:63 p.m. …. I NEVER said that the original statue of David was inside the Uffizi Museun …. I merely said that it was )kept) inside. I didn’t say where. I’ve seen the statue(s) of David (original & replica), and been in the Uffizi. I’m fully aware of what’s where, and what’s what.

I’ll acknowledge that my post didn’t identify which building the original was in. But it didn’t specifically identify the Uffizi as the location. My bad. I believe that I’m guilty of a dangling antecedent, but not an attempt to mislead.

P.S. I assume that you’ve been in Florence? Great city …. I’m sure we can agree on that.

Kim Jones says Wang has a minor calf strain. A major injury to him and this is a 100% rebuilding year.

  175. VT Yankeefan May 21st, 2008 at 6:50 pm

“Rare appearance for Shelley Duncan. Remember back when the plan was supposedly to get him 350 ABs to see what he could do? He has 37 ao far.”

While I appreciate that injuries have made it difficult to follow through on everything, it seems that Girardi has abandoned all of his preseason plans. Duncan playing first? No. Joba in the rotation? No. Long relief man in the pen? No. I’m sure I could come up with others.

It was nice to hear that Daniel Cabrera was concerned about Jeter’s status. He certainly didnt hit him intentionally. It looks like the O’s picked up some nice players for Tejada. What we would give for a trade of a Damon or Giambi for the same!

  202. AlbanyYankee May 21st, 2008 at 7:15 pm

    Couple things:

    1) CMW needs to understand that my fantasy team needs both he and Pettitte to step it up this week. Mild strain? The guys on Chico’s Bail Bonds laugh at mild strains.

    2) You CANNOT stop Cy Rasner!!!

    3) Johnny Damon’s bat just shattered. Seriously, he goes through 2 bats per at bat. Shouldn’t he be looking into something like maple bats?

  206. Nick in SF May 21st, 2008 at 7:16 pm

Since the Yanks can’t hit lefties and can’t hit pitchers they haven’t seen before… I think we have the double negative working in our favor. Even though I think Damon just slapped ball four for an out.

  207. Doreen May 21st, 2008 at 7:17 pm

I would prefer the Yankees exercise extreme caution and allow Wang to miss his start. Better safe than very, very sorry. Especially since this rotation is not quite stable.

On a brighter note Charleston won today 20-2!

    They had a 12 run 4th and a 7 run 6th.

Betances started and only went 4 innings (assume it was pitch count – 6 BB 4Ks)

Brian Baisley was the big bat 5 for 6 with 2 HR and 7 RBI’s (Baisley’s not a real prospect).

Yes! The Yankees break out on top. Maybe this will be the breakout night.

  244. Jerkface May 21st, 2008 at 7:36 pm

Demote the MLB Yankees, except for A-rod.

Promote the Charleston Chews to MLB!

    Also nice CANO DOUBLE

  245. randy l May 21st, 2008 at 7:36 pm

i would like to request a moment of silence.

…to give thanks for a run and a lead.

    it’s been a while.

  246. LadyBug626 May 21st, 2008 at 7:36 pm

    yahooooo!

  247. Steph May 21st, 2008 at 7:37 pm

    Nice hit there by Robbie.

  248. VRSCE May 21st, 2008 at 7:37 pm

Cano starts hitting, Yankees start winning.

  249. Kenneth Keith Kallenbach May 21st, 2008 at 7:37 pm

for what it’s worth, Giambi definitely doesn’t score on that double from first with one out. Duncan already paying dividends. Where the Giambino to score a run would have to hit one out.

  250. CB May 21st, 2008 at 7:37 pm

That was one of the first classic Cano gap line drive swings/ hits I can remember this year.

  251. Zooboy May 21st, 2008 at 7:37 pm

I’m going to act like we’ve been here before — these three hits in a row and scoring first oddness — and save my fist pump for later. (Fist pump! Ooops.)

  252. YanksAngel May 21st, 2008 at 7:37 pm

Let’s hope the new sock look helps him do what Robbie just did.

Good sign when our back up catcher is getting RBIs again

  253. Fran May 21st, 2008 at 7:37 pm

    And Moeller contributes.

Nick -you are right. Alex makes this team better.

  254. Jeff NJ May 21st, 2008 at 7:38 pm

Am I seeing production form the bottom of the order? I mean, am I seeing production from any part of this order?

  255. Tom May 21st, 2008 at 7:38 pm

Someone pinch me. 3 hits in a row.

  256. Steph May 21st, 2008 at 7:38 pm

    Ah…a 2-run lead? Am I dreaming?

  257. David May 21st, 2008 at 7:38 pm

If that throw beat Shelley to the plate by any amount there was no way he was sliding.

Lets put up a 7 spot for some retribution.

  260. 2008 Yankees May 21st, 2008 at 7:39 pm

Get ready Joba, you should be pitching tonight

  261. Neil May 21st, 2008 at 7:39 pm

Singles and Doubles and Singles with runners in scoring position OH MY

  262. Steph May 21st, 2008 at 7:39 pm

Well, don’t wake me up if I’m dreaming. I want to see this happen again and again and again…

  263. Jane May 21st, 2008 at 7:39 pm

Robbie and Shelley hear all the whining going on in this blog, doesn’t want Long to get fired.

And Moeller just had a RBI single.

(BTW, Pete, the Yanks just scored runs. We’ll worry about suspensions and snark remarks on what Joe said later.)

  264. jennifer- I got your back Girardi May 21st, 2008 at 7:40 pm

  266. hughman May 21st, 2008 at 7:40 pm

The Thongbino might not have scored from first, but the porn-stache is powering the Yankees, even from the bench. Well, that and the thong, and Jeter’s titanium hands.

  267. Dr. Cox May 21st, 2008 at 7:41 pm

    Nick In SF:

I agree with you about A-rod, but we really wont see the effects of him being back in the line up for a couple of days, maybe even a week.

This rally right now cannot be attributed to A-rod being in the line up.

  268. S.A.- Someone call the police, the Yankees offense is missing May 21st, 2008 at 7:41 pm

    Is this a dream?

  269. TKinDC May 21st, 2008 at 7:41 pm

Dumb question – who is the 1st base coach tonight for the Yanks? I don’t recognize him.

  270. Doreen May 21st, 2008 at 7:41 pm

I did, I have the wires tucked under the plastic that runs in the car.

If you look for xm message board, can’t recall the sight, but people can walk you through it on the board, there are even pictures showing you how to do it.

I’ll try to find the site.

  272. BIGHEAD May 21st, 2008 at 7:42 pm

yessir, wow I had forgot what a lineup that hits the ball looks like.

  273. jennifer- I got your back Girardi May 21st, 2008 at 7:42 pm

tk- I think it is the bench coach robbie thompson.

  274. Steph May 21st, 2008 at 7:43 pm

TKinDC-I think it’s the batting practice pitching coach or something like that. Pena has moved to third for the next couple of days.

  275. Fran May 21st, 2008 at 7:43 pm

TK – he’s the batting practice pitcher. Coaching first while Meacham is away and Pena is at 3rd.

  276. Nick in SF May 21st, 2008 at 7:43 pm

Dr. Cox, I find fault with your diagnosis. A rising tide lifts all ships. Think about it.

  281. Nick in SF May 21st, 2008 at 7:44 pm

This AB is the real “have things changed” test. We all know what we don’t want to see from the Captain and what we dread.

Bases loaded? Seriously, don’t wake me up.

Productive outs too? This is so refreshing!

  289. Dr. Cox May 21st, 2008 at 7:46 pm

    OK Nick in SF.

    You’re right lol.

  290. LadyBug626 May 21st, 2008 at 7:46 pm

  292. Steph May 21st, 2008 at 7:47 pm

Tony Pena is coaching third while Meacham is tending to his mother, I think. I forgot exactly what I heard on the pregame.

  293. S.A.- Someone call the police, the Yankees offense is missing May 21st, 2008 at 7:48 pm

    3 runs. I’ll take it!
    Let’s go Rasner!

  294. zellyanks91 May 21st, 2008 at 7:48 pm

These are the Yankees we all know and love. Not just hitting the long ball..and being patient at the plate. Rasner has been terrific..the next Aaron Small?

    3-0 Yankees.

    Go Yanks!

  295. Dr. Cox May 21st, 2008 at 7:48 pm

Which is why our first two runs scored. I hope Meachum has a kid graduate every game.

  296. Steph May 21st, 2008 at 7:48 pm

  297. 2008 Yankees May 21st, 2008 at 7:48 pm

I told ALL of you before, the Yankees will score 10 runs tonight….

  298. AlbanyYankee May 21st, 2008 at 7:49 pm

    Thanks, LadyBug. Good to know.

C’mon, Cy, shut ‘em down again!

  299. Jeff NJ May 21st, 2008 at 7:49 pm

Rasner to Joba to Mo = Win.

Ok a little early to 2nd guess, but I wonder if Girardi did the right thing pushing back Rasner from Saturday, he’s been so consistent. No jinx.

  306. Steph May 21st, 2008 at 7:52 pm

Today, Hank said that he believed in the Yankees and that they would contend. As much as I hate hearing him open his mouth, he should make announcements prior to every game. They’ve won every single game in which he has made some sort of announcement the day before or earlier in the day.

  307. jennifer- I got your back Girardi May 21st, 2008 at 7:53 pm

About Jerry Crowley, said the f word, and christ sake!

  308. randy l May 21st, 2008 at 7:53 pm

i’m pretty sure coaches are on the mlb pension plan so that’s a big deal for the batting practice pitcher. probably even one day qualifies him for something.

  309. Dr. Cox May 21st, 2008 at 7:53 pm

  322. Nick in SF May 21st, 2008 at 7:57 pm

Let’s not sell the Ras short with this Aaron Small talk. If folks just mean that he could be a good unexpected addition to help the rotation, sure, but Small was a career journeyman, no? Rasner is (relatively) a kid who might have a future, isn’t he?

  323. ER, from the set of May 21st, 2008 at 7:57 pm

They need more runs. You all know the honeymoon period for Rasner could end at anytime.

  324. YanksAngel May 21st, 2008 at 7:58 pm

that’s a great stat that Kay mentioned Rasner has, no hits with runners in scoring position, but I was more impressed that he’s only had 6 eunners in scoring position in all his games.

  325. Patrick May 21st, 2008 at 7:58 pm

I’ve listened to that Earl Weaver clip a few times, he is a really funny guy. I’m late at work again so I didn’t hear it, did they play part of the clip on air?

  326. VRSCE May 21st, 2008 at 7:58 pm

    Steph
That being the case, Why do you hate to hear Hank open his mouth.
He has been supportive and rational, even while saying he wanted to do the Santana deal.

  349. Dr. Cox May 21st, 2008 at 8:05 pm

    Nick in SF-

There is also a Brit band called Travis, I dont know if youve ever heard of them. They started recording two years before Coldplay and CPLay just totally ripped their sound on their first two albums, especially Parachutes.

Infact, Travis actually wound up opening for Coldplay and were much better live.

  350. Steph May 21st, 2008 at 8:05 pm

Mora’s hand got caught between Matsui’s spike and the third base bag. Cut his hand, so the trainer is out to fix it up.

  351. fred from jersey May 21st, 2008 at 8:05 pm

  352. jennifer- I got your back Girardi May 21st, 2008 at 8:05 pm

  353. Luthien May 21st, 2008 at 8:05 pm

Ravi – Looks like Mora may have been spiked

  354. YankeeDiva May 21st, 2008 at 8:06 pm

3 games for Matsui for spiking!!! :)

  355. Steph May 21st, 2008 at 8:06 pm

Ouch, and that looks like a bad cut, too. They just showed a zoomed in shot of it.

  356. CB May 21st, 2008 at 8:06 pm

I’m honestly very, very surprised they tried to go first to third on Markakisis’s arm with Matsui running (or really anyone not Jose Reyes running). Markakis has an absolute gun.

Right there you see both the potential pitfalls and rewards of trying to be aggressive.

The ball beat him there by a mile but they forced the orioles to make a play and Matsui’s slide broke things up.

He just as easily could have been out. In fact it was probably more likely that he was going to be out given the runner and the outfield arm.

A little bit of luck tonight. Good to have.

  357. Steph May 21st, 2008 at 8:07 pm

And Mora’s coming out of the game. He couldn’t throw the ball.

  358. Art Rust Jr May 21st, 2008 at 8:07 pm

    it would be funny if Kenny was bored and was playing his old manager’s drunk interview to school fathead Kay on some baseball history.;
I would love Joe G to launch into a tirade like that when Kim Jones asks him her questions in her oh so serious Ann Curry voice.

“listen toots, if i could punch Kei Igawa in his big teeth to make him keep the pitches low I would sister, but all he has going for him is that round rumpster of his, I swear he looks like a chick with that bubble butt, speakin of bubble butts where Waldman? I left my socks at her motel room and she promised to bring ‘em back. and another thing Hank can go ahead and kiss my etc etc etc….

There must be a room of headline writers at the NY Post who are crushed every year when the Yankees don’t acquire or sign Bartolo Colon. They probably just close a drawer that has a list of potential headlines like:

    “SEMI-COLON!”
    “COLON-OSCOPY!”
    “COLON-CLEANSING!”

    and such and such…,

  374. Scorpio May 21st, 2008 at 8:14 pm

What a different looking team tonight. Maybe last night really was rockbottom.

There is no way they were throwing at Melky.

Damon gets 2 RBIs on a ball that didn’t make it to the outfield on the fly. I love this game.

  392. S May 21st, 2008 at 8:17 pm

And Hawkins throwing at a batter and ejection = Yankees’ season turnaround.

  397. Tonight's burning questions May 21st, 2008 at 8:21 pm

Is this that elusive game that the Yankees got pissed at themselves to turn the season around ?

  398. Nick in SF May 21st, 2008 at 8:21 pm

Never doubt the power of the double negative. Or is it always don’t doubt the.. wait, no, I had it right the first time.

And the Royals turned a double play as I was typing “double negative”.

  399. S.o.S.27 May 21st, 2008 at 8:21 pm

    AlbanyYankee,
Yes. He might be Cashman in disquise. If he told us he would have to kill us. My guess is he is one of Cashmans scouts. I thought it he was Arods wife at first. But hes a he. Very informative. Our own personal scout. CB as well.

  404. Nick in SF May 21st, 2008 at 8:25 pm

Let me repeat this comment that might have been lost in the Arod-homer moment:

“Let’s not sell the Ras short with this Aaron Small talk. If folks just mean that he could be a good unexpected addition to help the rotation, sure, but Small was a career journeyman, no? Rasner is (relatively) a kid who might have a future, isn’t he?”

  405. Angel May 21st, 2008 at 8:25 pm

  416. Erick May 21st, 2008 at 8:27 pm

Hey guys, don’t know if you have posted about this before, maybe you can help me out.

I have absolutely no hope of ball game coverage where I’m at and don’t have the dough to pay for mlb.tv, last year I used to watch them on sopcast, but it seems mlb has black them out. When ever I click on ball games on my p2p page there is an announcement that any user broadcasting them will be executed, or something of the sort.

So I have been relegated to UUSEE and ESPN Taiwan or Japan, which gets stuck a lot and I have to reclick on the link and then it dies and never works.

Even when it does, I’m not very profficient in Asian languages so I understand silch. Is there like a sap feature on UUSEE and is there a better program out there for the games?

    Thanks for any help.

    Erick

Ah Miller and Bobcat. Good Times!

  423. CB May 21st, 2008 at 8:28 pm

People like to complain about Abreu and how he doesn’t charge the wall aggressively.

But he’s a very good defensive outfielder and this inning he has saved a run (so far).

By closing quickly on that ball Cintron hit to lead off the inning he was able to keep what looked like a possible double to a single.

A lesser right fielder doesn’t play the ball as well and Cintron has a shot of getting to second. If he stretches that into a double he would have already scored.

Plays like the one Abreu made on Cintron’s hit are far more common and important than playing balls where you have to crash into a wall.

  424. Kenneth Keith Kallenbach May 21st, 2008 at 8:29 pm

oh wow, Bobcat reference! I totally drank the kool aid with that dude’s posts, I was glued to the comments as if he was sitting at the table while Cashman was fielding calls from Minny on Santana. what a great con job.

  435. David May 21st, 2008 at 8:32 pm

This guy Rasner is the best thing to happen to the Yankees this season… He looks great on the mound, and the best thing about him is he never gives the other team anything… He never walks people and gives them free baserunners, and he never gives free stolen bases by forgetting about the runners.

  436. Corey May 21st, 2008 at 8:32 pm

I gotta say Rasner might be a real surprise…he has really worked on his pitches this past year

  437. kd May 21st, 2008 at 8:32 pm

i seem to recall that pete emailed bobcat asking who he was, which scared the guy. maybe he was who he said he was and didn’t want to lose his job.

but after the day he posted that pete emailed him, i haven;t seen a post.

  438. Luthien May 21st, 2008 at 8:32 pm

    Erik:

Seems like I’m in a similar situation (live in Iowa). I’m watching the game using Tvants. It’s another asian program so I have no idea about SAP or anything. So all I’m doing is watching the game with it muted. Quality is very good and the stream rarely dies out on me.

  439. Steph May 21st, 2008 at 8:33 pm

I think Karstens is supposed to be pitching in A-ball soon. He finished his time in extended spring training.

  440. gayle May 21st, 2008 at 8:33 pm

It truly is amazing how a good game by the Yanks turns the tone and comments during the games into something friendly and non combative.

To me the most interesting thing about this game so far is how Rasner is pitching off of an 11 day rest. SO far has not seemed to miss a beat.

  441. Angel May 21st, 2008 at 8:33 pm

Erick, Probably asking on a site that is not as popular as this one might be the way to go, or having someone tell you via email. I sure as heck wouldn’t broadcast it here anymore.

Sopcast was fine until links to it began rounds on blogs such as this one. Then the execution notices went up.

Beware, the eyes of MLB are everywhere. :)

  442. whozat May 21st, 2008 at 8:33 pm

“Plays like the one Abreu made on Cintron’s hit are far more common and important”

How can that be true? He didn’t get dirty or hit anything!

Karstens threw yesterday in AAA. He gave up three runs in 5 innings or so, but only threw 60-65 pitches.

  443. Erick May 21st, 2008 at 8:33 pm

    Thanks Luthien!

I remember Bobcat being fed up with people posting under his name and that was the reason he left.

    Same thing happened with Miller.

  446. Angel May 21st, 2008 at 8:34 pm

And I was clearly too late with the “not posting it here” link…

Grr. Wait for that one to bite the dust now.

  447. CB May 21st, 2008 at 8:35 pm

The most impressive part of Rasner’s performance tonight – he command.

He hasn’t pitched in 11 days and despite that looks very sharp.

You’d think maybe he’d struggle with his feel given that’s he’s a control pitcher who doesn’t throw very hard.

Rasner has learned how to pitch.

  448. whozat May 21st, 2008 at 8:35 pm

Also, per Chad Jennings, they actually activated him off the DL and optioned him to AAA today. It’s not really clear why, but perhaps the Wang situation has to do with it. Though, not sure why they wouldn’t wait until they have to make a call on that.

  449. geO May 21st, 2008 at 8:36 pm

  450. Scorpio May 21st, 2008 at 8:36 pm

  468. CB May 21st, 2008 at 8:44 pm

Can’t blame Shelley for that strike out. Sarfate has an electric fastball.

There’s no way a hitter can guess breaking ball as they’d never catch up to the fastball.

  469. Erick May 21st, 2008 at 8:45 pm

It’s working well Luthien, thanks, had to try a couple of channels but now it’s spotless. A shame about that sap though.

  471. Dr. Cox May 21st, 2008 at 8:45 pm

    CB:

Any other hitter I would agree with you. But Shelley just cant seem to figure out the breaking and off speed stuff.

He is like Pedro Cerano in the first Major League.

  472. Scorpio May 21st, 2008 at 8:45 pm

I hope SJ doesn’t mind, this is what he posted earlier today:

    SJ44′s Mike Piazza story….

Many years ago, he came to the University of Miami to try out and walk onto the baseball team.

He was a skinny kid. He worked out for a few days, played ok, but didn’t make the cut.

Ron Fraser, the coach at the time, got him into Miami-Dade North (a JC) and the rest, as they say, is history.

He was drafted in the late rounds of the draft, as a favor to Tommy LaSorda, and he’s a first ballot Hall of Famer. Amazing.

At the time of his tryouts, there was also a skinny kid who would hang out at Mark Light Stadium (UM’s home field) to take BP, field groundballs, and wait for his mom to pick him up after work.

    His name? Alex Rodriquez.

  473. Angel May 21st, 2008 at 8:46 pm

Rasner is looking really good. And to think the Yankees had DFA’d him. Glad he decided to come back.

  484. Chicago Dave May 21st, 2008 at 8:52 pm

Holy cow…Just got home and logged onto Gameday to find the Yanks winning 6-0. Lord be praised!! They do remember how to score more than two runs after all! YES!!!

At this rate, Rasner will officially be our second best pitcher (behind Wang). Weird, but I’ll take it!

  485. mmx May 21st, 2008 at 8:54 pm

Glad Ranser steps up when all other pitchers at slump.

  486. Patrick Bateman May 21st, 2008 at 8:56 pm

I give Rasner a lot of credit. He came back to the Yankees as a non roster invitee and worked his way up from the bottom. He’s giving it everything he has and is making the most out of his opportunity.

  487. Chicago Dave May 21st, 2008 at 8:57 pm

What’s the story with Sarfate? Was he a “somebody” coming out of college ball, or has he just appeared out of nowhere? I’ve never seen his name before.

  488. russ m May 21st, 2008 at 8:57 pm

Yankees scored 6 runs? What happened? H*** froze over? Angel said a comment worth reading? What happened, what??? I missed something

  489. SJ44 May 21st, 2008 at 8:58 pm

I’m not a scout. Never have been. Had ownership interests in several minor league teams over the years and am now semi-retired. I have a few clients in other areas of sports and that’s basically it at this point of my life.

Been fortunate enough to meet a lot of people in the game and maintain some friendships over the years. Been lucky enough to learn a lot from some great people.

I started my career out of law school working on arbitration cases in MLB. Mainly, from the research side.

It was eye opening on how the business worked and that’s how I got into it.

Over the years, I got involved in different things and I got away from the game (from the business side. Not the fan side) until a friend of mine bought several minor league franchises.

He cut me in and I was able to stay involved for several years before selling my interests.

Now, I just enjoy the game, catch up with friends in the game, and follow it as a hobby. Not as a business.

He was buried in the Astros system and came to Baltimore in the Tejada trade.

He’s always had a great arm. Control has been his problem.

  492. russ m May 21st, 2008 at 9:00 pm

Wait, the Sox are about to sweep the Royals, wonder how the Yanks have done against them so far this year?

  494. AlbanyYankee May 21st, 2008 at 9:01 pm

    Thanks, SJ. Was just wondering.

  495. Chicago Dave May 21st, 2008 at 9:01 pm

Damn, the O’s should make Sarfate a starter! This guy looks very tough to hit.

  496. Glenn May 21st, 2008 at 9:01 pm

Pitchers like Hughes and Kennedy would be well served to pay attention to how quickly Darrell Rasner works which is a strong suit.
Hitters get little chance to get set before the next pitch is ready to be thrown and if he’s throwing strikes, there’s a strong likelihood for pitching economically.
What limitations Rasner has for sheer hard stuff he makes up with by pitching smart.

  497. Chicago Dave May 21st, 2008 at 9:02 pm

SJ44 – Thanks for the info. on Sarfate.

  498. russ m May 21st, 2008 at 9:03 pm

  505. AlbanyYankee May 21st, 2008 at 9:06 pm

83 pitches through 6 shutout innings for Cy Rasner. Think they send him back out there for the 7th? With a 6 run lead, I’d imagine it all depends on how he is feeling. Would love to see a Cy/Joba/Mo win for the Yankees tonight.

  506. Chicago Dave May 21st, 2008 at 9:06 pm

Re: Hughes and IPK vs. Rasner. I think the most important difference is simply that Rasner is older and has had more experience. In other words, he has had more time to learn and refine his “craft.”

  507. hornblower May 21st, 2008 at 9:06 pm

    Nick in SF,
This is why they should not have skipped Rasner last weekend.

  508. russ m May 21st, 2008 at 9:06 pm

    5 games under .500, OUCH!!!

  509. mmx May 21st, 2008 at 9:07 pm

Impressive Rasner! This is the kind of pitcher Yankees needed.

  510. AlbanyYankee May 21st, 2008 at 9:08 pm

    Hope that ankle is OK.

  511. Steph May 21st, 2008 at 9:09 pm

They’ll send Rasner out for the seventh, no doubt. He’s got a lead and they need someone to give them innings. The pen went 8.1 yesterday and they’ve got Kennedy tomorrow.

  512. Rich May 21st, 2008 at 9:10 pm

“we can even throw the ball around if you’re up to it. i have a catcher’s mask
you can wear if you need it.”

haha- fine, if i get to wear the mask then maybe ill buy some over priced piece of crap shell necklace or something from you…

  513. stuart May 21st, 2008 at 9:10 pm

someone posted here today I forget who talking about a scouting report and the yankee bats are slow and throw them fastballs….

I am far from a scout but Sarfate(really only throws heat) and many others have done mainly that..Cabrera, Lee they threw fastballs a lot of them, am I seeing things or could there maybe be something to that??

    thanks..

  514. AlbanyYankee May 21st, 2008 at 9:10 pm

Agreed. Might not even need Mo, now that I think about it. I guess it depends on if Joba and Mo need an inning.

  518. JoeT - 28 IN 09!! May 21st, 2008 at 9:12 pm

nothing wrong with stealing here – 6 runs is not much, and the way the Yankees have been playing, they have to score as many runs as they possibly can

  519. AlbanyYankee May 21st, 2008 at 9:12 pm

The ump got in Abreu’s head during that at bat.

    Thank you flaherty

Hornblower, it’s hard to argue with results, and good memory, I’d forgotten that little issue. However, hindsight is 20/20, as they say, and keeping Pettitte and Wang in their usual schedule made sense too. Plus, if rasner had pitched then, would he be pitching tonight? We might be losing this game if they hadn’t skipped Rasner!

    A comment on leadership.

Folks like to talk about leadership in sports. Unfortunately a lot of people, including many in the media, have no idea what leadership actually entails at the professional level.

Its not yelling and getting in everyone’s face or giving colorful quotes to the media.

That may get you props on talk radio. It gets you ZERO points in the locker room or among your peers.

What Jeter is doing tonight is the classic example of great leadership.

He’s in the lineup the night after taking a shot on the wrist and playing horribly.

So many guys would have sat out tonight. Jeter did not.

He knows the team is struggling and there was no way he was going to sit out tonight. He also wasn’t going to sit out and demonstrate a lack of accountability on his part. Even if he is hurting. Which he is.

That’s leadership at the major league level. That’s why he has such universal respect in the locker room and among his peers in the game.

It may look simple (just being in the lineup) to some but, its not. A LOT of guys, including some on this team, would have sat out after getting drilled last night.

Its an action that puts people on notice.

The Yankees have Posada to get in people’s face and he does a great job of that.

But, make no mistake, Jeter is the leader of this team and tonight is another example why.

That’s now 3 HR’s missed by umpiring crews in 4 days.

At some point, they are going to have to have instant replay in MLB. Too many misses of calls like this to excuse.

  534. Nick in SF May 21st, 2008 at 9:16 pm

I think the ball doesn’t bounce that way if it’s off the padding, but blind umps at real speed…. tough to tell.

Fact: if I’m typing up a post that related to Rasner while Arod is up, he hits it out.

  535. S.A.- Someone call the police, the Yankees offense is missing May 21st, 2008 at 9:16 pm

  537. Doreen May 21st, 2008 at 9:16 pm

Well, now it’s even. Replay anyone?

  538. JoeT - 28 IN 09!! May 21st, 2008 at 9:16 pm

yeah i don’t see how anyone can argue against instant replay for home run balls if you’ve been watching the Yankees play this last week

  539. berniepaul&tino May 21st, 2008 at 9:17 pm

ok they got the call wrong and arod should be upset but for some reason it bothers me when arod gets this upset. all the negative media attention he gets always causes me to think the worst. In this case it makes me think he cares a little to much about his stats.

    anyone else feel this way?

    8-0 Yanks
    Hello offense

  545. Steph May 21st, 2008 at 9:19 pm

No, A-Rod hit the ball out and it hit off the stairs out in right field. It bounced straight back into the field of play, so Markakis grabbed it and lobbed it back into the infield.

  546. Jeff NJ May 21st, 2008 at 9:19 pm

I don’t understand how the ump doesn’t just walk over to the nearest cameraman and ask him. Just seems like the human thing to do.

  547. Fran May 21st, 2008 at 9:19 pm

It looked like a homerun. But I honestly had to look at it a few times to be sure. It’s a good thing that the Yankees have a big lead.

Robi’s only had 1 good AB tonight, he needs to work harder at this

  549. stuart May 21st, 2008 at 9:19 pm

of course they should have instant replay the goal is to make the correct call.

on fair and foul plays, on plays at the plate and on HR’s plays…

there will be a instant replay every 5 or so games it would be a good thing and each team gets 2 challenges max per game…

  550. Blargh May 21st, 2008 at 9:20 pm

If that was ruled a HR and tonight’s at-bats were somehow spliced into last night’s, the 3-HR by A-Rod talk would have been so right!….

  551. Jerkface May 21st, 2008 at 9:20 pm

    SJ44:

I agree with you that leadership isn’t necessarily yelling or what not, but playing hurt is NOT leadership.

Especially if you are impacting your teams ability to win. Thats being selfish.

  552. ham fighter May 21st, 2008 at 9:20 pm

    Jeff,

Umpires aren’t allowed to do it. Its against the rules.

  554. Steph May 21st, 2008 at 9:21 pm

Probably because a camera man could be biased and would lie to make a call go a certain way.

  555. fred from jersey May 21st, 2008 at 9:21 pm

    no challenges. umpire discretion.

  556. YankeeDiva May 21st, 2008 at 9:21 pm

I don’t think Alex arguing was big deal, he wasn’t out of control and was making his point (which was the right one), he has to be able to stand up for himself.

Too bad they didn’t paint that staircase black instead of yellow…

  558. Peter Abraham May 21st, 2008 at 9:22 pm

    SJ44:

Stop making sense. Don’t you know that leaders throw water coolers? Don’t you know that the best managers yell at the umpires? You have to jump around and swear a lot to be a good leader.

What makes you think that professional athletes who are together from Feb.-Oct. would be impressed by somebody who shows up every day, works hard, prepares hard, never complains and is accountable for everything he does?

Don’t you know that it’s a complete coincidence that the Yankees won with Derek Jeter?

People try and treat baseball like the NFL and you just can’t. About 30 percent of the fan base understands that. The rest think that every loss is a reason to fire everybody.

  559. Scorpio May 21st, 2008 at 9:22 pm

    berniepaul&tino…

are you crazy? it was a HR, anybody would be upset that the call was wrong. what if this was a 1-run game??
A-Rod’s HR tonight was easier to call than Delgado’s from Sun.

  560. Jeff NJ May 21st, 2008 at 9:23 pm

SJ, I understand that, but what would happen if they did? Would they get fined for getting the call right? If so that would just drive more attention to this silly issue.

  561. KG86 May 21st, 2008 at 9:23 pm

I’m really impressed by Rasner tonight. Thankfully A-Rod is back in this lineup, he seems like the spark they needed to get this offense going. Can’t wait for Posada’s return!

  562. Peter Abraham May 21st, 2008 at 9:24 pm

  565. Bronx Born May 21st, 2008 at 9:24 pm

here’s Joba pitching that all important 8th inning how long …probably for 1 more month

  567. SJ44 May 21st, 2008 at 9:26 pm

    Jerkface,

There is playing hurt and playing injured. You have to play hurt in pro sports. No way around it. Playing injured is when you hurt the team. That’s selfish.

Jeter is playing hurt. That’s all about accountability and not shying away during a losing streak. That kind of accountability is what leadership entails at the professional level.

If the team was on a 9 game win streak, he probably sits out tonight.

By playing, its his way of saying, “its time we get our heads out of our asses and play”.

Its a statement and it does resonate with guys in the locker room. It really does.

That’s why he is Derek Jeter. Its why guys like Curt Schilling, who hates most players, loves Jeter.

In the Mafia, they can it “respect”. Jeter has it among teammates and peers.

What he has done for this franchise and this city is comparable to only Ruth, Dimaggio and Mantle.

It has truly been an honor to watch him and be a part of him for the past 12-13 seasons. I feel we take him for granted sometimes.

i wasnt clear in what my point was in that last post

my point is that if it were any other player i would not think twice about it… how much or how little they complain.

i think the constant media criticism has slipped into my subconscious and i constanly find myself examining every thing he does and i feel guilty because he is such a great player and so much of the criticism is undeserved.

    Great game to watch tonight.

Gotta agree with SJ44 and Pete, Jete does show great leadership by being in the line up after yesterday’s game. He’s not playing so hurt that he’s hurting the team, and he is playing when a lot of people would probably have taken a night off after taking that hit yesterday. He knows they don’t need to be without any star players and he’s setting a good example. I’d much prefer that than showing a temper and kicking things around.

  597. Nick in SF May 21st, 2008 at 9:34 pm

  599. David May 21st, 2008 at 9:35 pm

I think it would be a little bit risky for the umps to go over to a camera when they aren’t supposed to, but what prevents the guy running the scoreboard from putting a freezframed picture of the ball against the yellow stair case and the ball circled in red on the scoreboard? I never see it done and they might want to try that. Yeah, the umps can’t go over to a camera but no one tells them they can’t glance up at the scoreboard. Plus, when they get together like that, if they looked up at it no one would ever know if they did it quickly. Seems like a pretty easy way for a home scoreboard guy to help his team out a little bit.

So when will the scouting begin to catch up to Rasner? It’s only a matter of time right?

  604. Chicago Dave May 21st, 2008 at 9:38 pm

Love your posts SJ44. But your continual use of “its” when “it’s” is called for drives me crazy. Admittedly my bad and of no import whatsoever, but could you have some pity on my poor grammarian soul and start flashing the ‘s when abbreviating “it is” instead of always flicking down the possessive case “its”? Go Yanks.

Rasner is an example that its not about the radar gun.

If he can succeed, Ian Kennedy certainly can. Its about location, working quickly, and pitching ahead in counts.

Also, big ups to Rafael Chaves in Scranton. He worked a lot with Rasner in AAA. He taught him a cutter (which has completely changed him as a pitcher), and kept his spirits u during the time he wasn’t considered for a callup.

Its so important that minor league coaches have that kind of relationship with players. Its invaluable to their development.

Baseball is the toughest sport to make it in. The minors are tough! You battle and battle and sometimes politics keeps you down.

Or, a guy in the front office just doesn’t like you.

So much crap guys have to deal with just to get a shot.

Its really nice to see a guy like Rasner pick himself off the deck and make this kind of contribution. Very, very happy for him.

He doesn’t have to be Cy Young. Make no mistake though. You can’t discount WHEN a guy contributes. Its as important as the contribution itself.

Rasner doing this now is huge for this team. Hopefully, he can keep it up.

  612. Steph May 21st, 2008 at 9:39 pm

Anybody catch Papelbon’s triple fist pump last night when he ended a bases loaded threat in the eighth inning? Not a single complaint anywhere from anyone. And that whole “he ends games” theory went out the window, it happened at the end of a spot where Joba would have thrown.

I went a few years ago, it was pretty interesting. Just a word of advise, go to 12th ave than walk either uptown or downtown depending on where the entrance is. I made the mistake of walking up to 50th than over to 12th and the entrance was at 40th or something. So I had to walk back downtown.

    innings as a startER

  640. Vince May 21st, 2008 at 9:49 pm

1998 Yanks, even if Joba pitched in say, all 90 games the Yankees could win this season, that’s still about 50 short of his mark. I’m sure there is a tentative inning number before he becomes a starter (if he does), and that number doesn’t even account blowouts, third days in a row, or complete games. It’s not a big deal to keep him sharp rather than risk ineffectiveness in a close game.

  641. Scorpio May 21st, 2008 at 9:49 pm

So, do ya’ll think Girardi will stick with this line up again tomorrow? It will be a lefty again (I think).

  642. Nick in SF May 21st, 2008 at 9:49 pm

    Relax, Brandon.

  643. David May 21st, 2008 at 9:50 pm

1998yanks, I see where you’re coming from, but you can’t have the best of both worlds. If he’s going to come in in close games, he needs to be sharp. You saw him walk a guy tonight, that’s what happens when he’s a novelty good that comes in once a week. You can’t expect him to pitch once a week and then be sharp in a close game.

So yeah, you’d love to have him pitch as little as possible, but you can’t have that if you want him to be the setup guy for now.

  644. Fran May 21st, 2008 at 9:50 pm

Jeter @ 50% is in no way better than Alberto at 100%.

Jeter @ 100% is only marginally better than Alberto based on offense. Alberto is pretty even with Jeter if you factor in defense.

If Jeter can play to his normal level, and can field the ball as poorly as he usually does(and not worse) than sure, play hurt.

But playing hurt and then playing poorly is no good.

Like when Giambi hurt his foot and stunk up the joint, did we praise his leadership?

Or is this a Jeter only case?

It’ll be good to finally get him into the rotation. He’s not getting regular work out of the pen and that’s hurting his development.

  702. trisha - never underestimate the power of a few words from Hank. May 21st, 2008 at 10:06 pm

    Now let’s think about this.

Why would they be getting ready to stretch Joba out to start?

    1. They love him as set up for Mo. He IS the 8th inning.

    2. Wang, Pettitte, Mussina, Rasner, Kennedy (yuk), Hughes (eventually)

They do not need Joba to start this season!

  703. Chicago Dave May 21st, 2008 at 10:06 pm

Ahh, just picture Joba and Rasner in the rotation back-to-back. “Spahn and Sain and pray for rain!” HEHEHE!!!

  704. ER, from the set of May 21st, 2008 at 10:06 pm

Face it, Joba is a one-inning pitcher

  705. Nick in SF May 21st, 2008 at 10:06 pm

There are a few of us in the greater SF area, Michelle. I was going to try to organize some LoHud meetup when the Yankees come to Oakland next month, but now I think I might be out of town for the series. If not, I’ll give it a try.

    Don’t be a stranger!

    (relax, Brandon)

  706. pat May 21st, 2008 at 10:07 pm

The Mets have the same problem with WIllie that the Yanks have with Giambi. They don’t have anyone to replace him and they owe him too much money.

  707. Steph May 21st, 2008 at 10:07 pm

If Hughes and Kennedy can’t pitch up to par, they’ll very well need another starter this season.

  708. Jerkface May 21st, 2008 at 10:07 pm

Joba is going to be a baller starter.

  709. Fran May 21st, 2008 at 10:07 pm

Good all around game tonight. Now let’s hope the Yankees keep it up.

  710. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 11 ) May 21st, 2008 at 10:08 pm

YEH BABY THE STRETCH OUT BEGINS !!!

  711. trisha - never underestimate the power of a few words from Hank. May 21st, 2008 at 10:08 pm

I definitely disagree that Joba is out there for two innings for any other purpose than he is getting work in and they are not going to use another arm tonight.

With Kennedy going tomorrow they are not going to burn out anybody else. They have used Ollie too much as it is and others have also gotten work in.

  712. Jeff NJ May 21st, 2008 at 10:08 pm

I don’t think Joba pitching two is an indication of stretching him out. I mean, he’s pitch 2 innings before. He is only on pace for like 80 innings, at least if he gets two at a time he will get his innings up to be a starter next year.

  713. YanksAngel May 21st, 2008 at 10:08 pm

    Great win!!!

We beat Baltimore. TB and Toronto both lose. Would be a perfect day in the division if KC could find a miracle and come back against Boston.

  714. DYNASTY IS DESTINY! May 21st, 2008 at 10:08 pm

    Yes!!!! YANKEES WIN!!!!

Starters are more important than bullpen

    Joba >>>> Hughes >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Kennedy

You want Joba in the rotation.

Joba >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Rasner, Mussina, Pettitte(at the moment)

  716. Chicago Dave May 21st, 2008 at 10:09 pm

The thought of Kennedy on the mound tomorrow makes me ill…

  717. Christine May 21st, 2008 at 10:09 pm

Great game. I hope to see a lot more of this in the days/weeks/months to come.

    “The Process has started”

  727. Jax May 21st, 2008 at 10:10 pm

Girardi just said the process is starting. Joba a starter! FINALLY!

  728. gayle May 21st, 2008 at 10:11 pm

    ” The process has started”

    WOW!!!

  729. David May 21st, 2008 at 10:11 pm

That was awesome how Girardi announced it.

  730. Nick in SF May 21st, 2008 at 10:11 pm

And Joe Girardi makes the biggest news of the game. The process has started!!! Stretch him out!

  731. Blargh May 21st, 2008 at 10:11 pm

Wang, revived Moose, 2nd half version of Pettitte (hopefully), Joba, and Rasner v2; I’ll take that rotation

  732. JoeT - 28 IN 09!! May 21st, 2008 at 10:11 pm

I didn’t think that Joe “keep everything in house” Girardi would say that until he announced that he was starting a game.

  733. YanksAngel May 21st, 2008 at 10:11 pm

    The prcoess has started!!!

That will get lots of artciles written for tomorrow’s papers.

  734. Yankee Fan in Boston May 21st, 2008 at 10:11 pm

WOW, that was a HUGE bombshell to drop at 10pm after a 8-0 win. Joba starting his stretching to starter status. WOW BOMBSHELL. GO PETER GO!

  735. keith May 21st, 2008 at 10:11 pm

Girardi comes right out and says it. Awesome.

  736. trisha - never underestimate the power of a few words from Hank. May 21st, 2008 at 10:11 pm

    Wow.

CB et al are right. Girardi says the process has begun.

This makes no sense to me but it doesn’t have to.

What are they going to do with Rasner? Kennedy? Hughes?

  737. jennifer- I got your back Girardi May 21st, 2008 at 10:11 pm

Yes Knew, that is why they wanted to speak to him before the entire media got to him. :P

  738. Rob NY May 21st, 2008 at 10:12 pm

I haven’t been posting much but all I can say is YES! “The process has started.” sounded like music to my ears. Maybe McCutchen to the 8th inning?

  739. lil' m May 21st, 2008 at 10:12 pm

Derek Sanderson Jeter: the Captain, the Leader, and The Man. ‘Nuff said.

  741. sfill May 21st, 2008 at 10:12 pm

Yahhhhh baby! Let the “process” begin! Look out world, Joba is being converted … woohoo!

  742. TKinDC May 21st, 2008 at 10:12 pm

What a relief to hear Frank Sinatra at the end of a game and not Liza – I was getting sick of her!

    :)

  743. Chicago Dave May 21st, 2008 at 10:12 pm

Patience is a virtue, folks. Girardi and Cash kept saying it was coming…Didn’t you believe them?

  744. Dr. Cox May 21st, 2008 at 10:12 pm

    A great high tonight.

I pray we build on it so we aren’t followed by another low.

  745. trisha - never underestimate the power of a few words from Hank. May 21st, 2008 at 10:13 pm

Yep. As long as the name Kennedy isn’t there I feel comfortable.

  746. jennifer- I got your back Girardi May 21st, 2008 at 10:13 pm

Rob I think you are correct.

  747. Nick in SF May 21st, 2008 at 10:13 pm

On second thought, what Joe Girardi just said about the process starting is not the biggest news of the night.

Joe Girardi just said more than he had to… he just told the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth when he didn’t have to. Wow. Now THAT is news.

  748. S.A.- Welcome back Yankees Offense. Don't leave us! May 21st, 2008 at 10:13 pm

So it’s begun. Can’t wait! Go Joba!

  749. Dee May 21st, 2008 at 10:13 pm

Wow, just walked in, saw the huge win and then Joba conversion straight from the horse’s mouth!!!

I can’t believe he just said that so casually, shouldn’t that be like bit announcement on the white house lawn or at least in the middle of time square??!!

  750. Scorpio May 21st, 2008 at 10:13 pm

“The process has started” t-shirts will be available in S-M-L-XL right next the “Joba Rules” t-shirts, sold in a Yankee fan store near you!

  751. Fran May 21st, 2008 at 10:14 pm

Surprised that Joe just came out and confirmed it. It seems like everything is always so secretive.

  752. David May 21st, 2008 at 10:14 pm

This is going to be one stellar rotation… Right now it looks like Kennedy and Hughes are the odd men out. They certainly had their opportunities.

Things just went from looking fairly grim for the Yankees to VERY positive.

  753. Chicago Dave May 21st, 2008 at 10:14 pm

“the plan” was always thinly-veiled secret code for “starting”

  754. S.A.- Welcome back Yankees Offense. Don't leave us! May 21st, 2008 at 10:14 pm

Francessa is gonna flip his lid tomorrow…according to him Joba a starter=waste

  755. Dr. Cox May 21st, 2008 at 10:15 pm

    Fran:

It did seem a bit odd. Jones came right out and asked what the deal was with the two innings and the pitch selections.

    Almost seemed a bit scripted.

  756. SJ44 May 21st, 2008 at 10:15 pm

Folks, all you gotta do is follow the movement in the farm system the past few days:

Cox, McCutchen and Robertson to AAA.

Melancon, who is pitching lights out, to AA.

Add to it the success Ramirez and Veras have had and its pretty clear Joba is getting transitioned.

Its gonna happen and its gonna happen this year.

IMO, by the end of July Mark Melancon will have a major role in the Yankee bullpen.

When he does, and when people see how effective Joba will be as a starter, folks will then understand why the Yankees are doing what they are doing.

  757. Steph May 21st, 2008 at 10:15 pm

I thought some of the biggest news was that the Yankees actually won.

  758. Dee May 21st, 2008 at 10:15 pm

Trisha, Rasner isn’t going anywhere if he keeps pitching like this. Joe just said “he’s got the 4th spot locked in”.

  759. Rob NY May 21st, 2008 at 10:16 pm

Hey Scorpio i’ll take an XL for me and a S for my mother lol

  760. CB May 21st, 2008 at 10:16 pm

Joba hasn’t looked sharp recently – it’s because he’s not getting regular work.

He’s also stuck throwing two pitches and hitters are starting to recognize his slider.

If they see it’s a slider they just don’t swing assuming it’s going to fall out of the zone.

That’s one of the problems with having a young pitcher like joba in the pen.

He’s now oriented his slider to be a relief pitcher slider – the kind that darts out of the zone consistently. He’s intentionally throwing his slider so it won’t wind up being a strike.

He’s intentionally throwing the pitch so it winds up being a ball instead of throwing the pitch so it winds up as a strike.

You can do that as a relief pitcher but not as a starter (it’s also something you can do as a minor leaguer but not major leaguer).

Watching Joba throw know I really think that his time as a relief pitcher has to finish. It’s now hurting his development.

Good thing he’s going to be in the rotation soon.

  761. trisha - never underestimate the power of a few words from Hank. May 21st, 2008 at 10:16 pm

Well I’d say that Girardi just gave Kennedy a message loud and clear.

    Good.

And whomever just said that Kennedy and Hughes had their chances is absolutely correct.

  762. Nick in SF May 21st, 2008 at 10:16 pm

The only bigger bombshell Joe G could have dropped there would have been the reintroduction of ice cream into the clubhouse. Wow, I feel like calling my dad and my brother!

  763. Chicago Dave May 21st, 2008 at 10:17 pm

SJ44 – So you really believe Melancon is capable of making a Joba-like jump from the low minors to pitching successfully for the big club this year?

  764. Doreen May 21st, 2008 at 10:17 pm

    TKinDC -

They haven’t played Liza in a while. Frankie boy on tap every night.

If Rasner continues to do this well, and if Chamberlain can slide in fairly easily, perhaps Hughes and Kennedy can work on their stuff in AAA, getting a call up only if something goes awry. This would be good all around, I think. I’m sure they won’t be happy with it short-term, but long-term, they’ll be so much better off for it.

  765. whozat May 21st, 2008 at 10:17 pm

“What are they going to do with Rasner? Kennedy? Hughes?”

Who cares? Joba’s highly likely to be better than any save Hughes. He’s only _probably_ going to be better than Hughes.

Rasner, Kennedy, Horne, McCutchen can all fight over the last spot in the rotation next year, and/or be traded for the other pieces the Yankees will need going forward.

  766. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 11 ) May 21st, 2008 at 10:17 pm

  767. Angel May 21st, 2008 at 10:17 pm

I didn’t think he’d actually come out and say it to her straight out like that.

    Good news though.

  768. Dee May 21st, 2008 at 10:18 pm

How long will the process take??! by the ASB?

  769. trisha - never underestimate the power of a few words from Hank. May 21st, 2008 at 10:18 pm

“Trisha, Rasner isn’t going anywhere if he keeps pitching like this. Joe just said “he’s got the 4th spot locked in”.

    Dee –

    YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don’t know how long it takes to stretch a one-inning pitcher into a starter but I wouldn’t think we’ll see Joba very soon.

  770. pat May 21st, 2008 at 10:18 pm

Temper excitement of the Joba news with a little realism too. There might be growing pains.

  771. RayBlay May 21st, 2008 at 10:19 pm

SJ44, it’s all clear to me now!
I kept noticing the wonderful movement in the farm system (as well as the awesome pitching!) and only now have I realized that we’re setting up the bullpen. Duhhhh

  772. Jeff NJ May 21st, 2008 at 10:19 pm

Holy crap! Glad I was wrong. Joba to the rotation. I knew the wouldn’t need to send him down to Scranton to get it done. M&tMD is much listen tomorrow, the said the Yankees wouldn’t do it since they would lose him for a month. Things are looking up.

  773. matt's dad May 21st, 2008 at 10:20 pm

I hope we won’t be missing Jaba tommorrow if game is close

  774. whozat May 21st, 2008 at 10:21 pm

“And whomever just said that Kennedy and Hughes had their chances is absolutely correct.”

Yeah, Hughes got a month, during which he was injured. They should trade him for whatever they can get. He’s already 21!

Should he have to show that his form is back during his rehab assignment? Of course. But, if he’s healthy and pitching well at AAA when his rehab assignment is up, move aside whoever’s doing the worst in the MLB rotation.

  775. Jerkface May 21st, 2008 at 10:21 pm

    Trish:

Joba was a starter in spring. He just threw 35 pitches. Just like Rehab he’ll go up to 50ish, maybe stay there for an extra turn, then 80. Then he will start.

  776. Vince May 21st, 2008 at 10:21 pm

i make rasner a long reliever, he has demonstrated he can pitch well even on odd rest. rotation: Wang, Pettitte, Mussina, Chamberlain, Hughes, in that order. Sinker, lefty, off speed, power, pettitte esque pitcher with that order.

  777. SJ44 May 21st, 2008 at 10:21 pm

He’s not giving Kennedy a message.

They are doing what they always planned to do. That is, make Joba a starter.

It really has nothing to do with Kennedy.

The Yankees have starting pitching needs. If Kennedy pitches well, he will stay in the rotation.

    If he doesn’t, he won’t.

Right now, Wang and Rasner have been solid. Pettitte hasn’t pitched well for a month and Moose, while pitching better than expected this year, is certainly no lock to keep pitching that way.

With all that uncertainty, now is the time to get Joba in the rotation.

CB and I talked about this the other day. Joba is wasted in that role.

I watched him pitch all last summer. This is kid is SCARY GOOD as a starting pitcher. He was born to be in that role.

Its really a testament to his skills and his guts that he took to relieving so well. That’s hard to do.

But make no mistake, this kid is a starting pitcher.

The top of the rotation type of talent the Yankees have desired for years.

  778. Chicago Dave May 21st, 2008 at 10:21 pm

“Temper excitement of the Joba news with a little realism too. There might be growing pains.”

pat – I agree with you and CB on this. Joba has now “transformed” himself into a reliever, and, to an extent, that may initially hurt him as he tries to switch back to being a starter. Still, with his talent I think he’ll be just fine in the end…

  779. Doreen May 21st, 2008 at 10:21 pm

    JeffNJ –

Why are you going to listen to M&MD when you KNOW they’re going to drive you nuts?!

  780. Jerkface May 21st, 2008 at 10:21 pm

Joba will make a start in June

  781. Angel May 21st, 2008 at 10:21 pm

I fully expect there to be growing pains, Pat.

But I do agree its time for him to start moving towards starting. He’s being wasted in relief at this point.

  782. S.A.- Welcome back Yankees Offense. Don't leave us! May 21st, 2008 at 10:22 pm

“Temper excitement of the Joba news with a little realism too. There might be growing pains.”

    oh agreed.

  783. Kevin May 21st, 2008 at 10:22 pm

Simply splendid news regarding Joba. I’m thrilled. Especially if the Ras-manian Devil keeps pitching like this.

And hey, if it doesn’t work and Joba pulls a Kennedy (kidding…Kennedy will get better, I’m positive), then you slot him back into the 8th/9th inning for the next 15 years. Win-win-win.

  784. trisha - never underestimate the power of a few words from Hank. May 21st, 2008 at 10:22 pm

Nah, I keep Rasner in the rotation. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

  785. David May 21st, 2008 at 10:22 pm

Being that Ian Kennedy is pitching tomorrow I doubt the game will be close. Even if the Yankees win, it’ll probably have to be based on an over-powering offense performance.

  786. Jax May 21st, 2008 at 10:23 pm

“Temper excitement of the Joba news with a little realism too. There might be growing pains.”

Yes there will be growing pains. He won’t be any different then any other young pitcher. but it’s still exciting to have him finally in the rotation. I got tired of that 1 inning deal.

  787. stuart May 21st, 2008 at 10:24 pm

SJ you are correct. betweeon Cox(closer for Texas set up man for houston street) very good at AA 2yr sgo before TJ, Melancon, and others they are using a asset(many good relief arms) and not wasting a #1 type stuff guy on 60 innings..

good move, long term the right thing to do..they have like 8 legit arms in the pen with upside, yes most will fail but some will not.

    YES>>>>

joba, wang, hughes, pettitte, and moose or rasner or something like that..That aint BAD>>>>>>

  788. whozat May 21st, 2008 at 10:24 pm

“I don’t know how long it takes to stretch a one-inning pitcher into a starter but I wouldn’t think we’ll see Joba very soon.”

He threw 30+ pitches today. He can throw 45 in a few days. Then 60-65 four-five days after that. The fifth day after that, he’s got 80 pitches and you can start him. He’s not really a “one inning” pitcher. He’s been throwing 1-2 inning stints for 7 weeks. Up until then, he was throwing longer than that.

  789. Jeff NJ May 21st, 2008 at 10:24 pm

Good point Doreen. They will bash it like always. Ok well at least the Michael Kay show becomes must listen.

  790. trisha - never underestimate the power of a few words from Hank. May 21st, 2008 at 10:24 pm

Now I have no horse in the race so I don’t particularly care where Joba ends up, but for those of you who are doing happy back flips right now, I hope you don’t turn around and start to trash the bullpen if we don’t have a solid 8th inning transition person. We’re giving one up to make him a starter.

  791. Chicago Dave May 21st, 2008 at 10:24 pm

SJ44 – And how would you compare Melancon to Joba? I’m still not sure I see Melancon making a splash with the Yankees this year (though I’d be glad to see it happen!).

  792. SJ44 May 21st, 2008 at 10:24 pm

    Chicago Dave:

Re: Melancon. Yup. He’s not a good relief pitcher. He’s a great relief pitcher. If he stays healthy, he will have a bigtime career with the Yankees.

The kid is a beast. Competes, has 3 pitches he can throw for strikes, and doesn’t give into hitters.

Perfect mentality for a closer/8th inning guy.

He’s the guy. Everybody else is just keeping the seat warm for him.

The Yankees will deny it like crazy but, he’s the guy they feel can be the 8th inning guy and future closer when Mo retires.

I happen to agree with them. The kid is a stud.

  793. Rob NY May 21st, 2008 at 10:25 pm

Yeah I dont move Rasner at all. I was talking about him during the game, he has definitely earned himself a few more turns. I think the odd man out has to be IPK right now unless he starts pitching like Ras. (lol never thought id be saying that.

  794. DYNASTY IS DESTINY! May 21st, 2008 at 10:25 pm

  795. whozat May 21st, 2008 at 10:26 pm

“Nah, I keep Rasner in the rotation. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

By the time Hughes is ready to come back, there’s no guarantee that Rasner will still be doing well. There’s no guarantee that Moose or Andy will either. Something may be “broke” by that point.

  796. Chicago Dave May 21st, 2008 at 10:27 pm

How quickly we forget poor Phil Hughes! We used to talk about nothing but him…

Here’s hoping Phil makes a strong comeback eventually and reminds us all why we were so entranced with him to begin with.

  797. Dee May 21st, 2008 at 10:27 pm

“i make rasner a long reliever, he has demonstrated he can pitch well even on odd rest. rotation: Wang, Pettitte, Mussina, Chamberlain, Hughes, in that order.”

Doesn’t make any sense at all when Rasner has pitched better than Pettitte and Hughes.

    I like this rotation:
    Wang
    Rasner
    Moose
    Joba
    Pettitte

I got tickets to the Friday night game at Shea with the Yanks at the end of June. I called my brother a month ago and predicted that will be the first official Joba start – I will stick to that timetable.
If Joba succeeds the Yankees will have a pleasant problem of what to do with the excess pitchers. Things have a funny way of working themselves out over a long season. At the worst, if everyone is pitching well (how ironic) it will give Hughes more time for refinement in the minors.
Dreams of Wang, Joba, Hughes, Pettite, Sabathia, Garcia, Brackman, Sanchez, Horne, Kennedy, Betances, Macallister, Heredia, Vizcaino etc etc.

Who cares about our 8th inning guy when we’ve been losing in innings 1-5 all season?

‘Something may be “broke” by that point.’

And if it is, so be it. Until then, Rasner is it.

  801. Frank Discussion May 21st, 2008 at 10:28 pm

Rasner looks really sharp, seems like he has a great deal of confidence out there. Mixing up speed and location really well, keeping hitters off balance. Can’t ask for much more then that.

Really good to see Alex up to his old tricks again. I’m glad he didn’t change his walk-up music, it’s one of my daughter’s favorite songs (19 months old !) She watched the game with me tonight in her AROD shirt.

Oh, and for Trisha, saw you taking a few shots at the venerable “Hawk”… I can’t stand him as well. Check out this link if you haven’t been there already. Lots of laughs.

SJ44, what do you think of JB Cox? 2 years ago everyone was raving about him and PJH in ST… now he seems to be doing pretty well in AAA… think we’ll see him soon??

  803. Scorpio May 21st, 2008 at 10:31 pm

I’m a Joba for Starter convert. The good & smart folks here convinced me. His arm is simply more valuable as a starter.

“The process has started…” – original Girardism

  804. jason May 21st, 2008 at 10:31 pm

The Yankees haev a ton of options for the old “Joba 8th inning role.” High quality relief is what the Yanks are stacked with in the high minors and on the big club – Veras, Ramirez, Ohlendorf, Cox, Robertson, Melancon, Sanchez (if converted), Horne (maybe at the end of this year a la Joba last year), McCutcheon, Kontos etc (Farnsworth, Hawkins, Britton) Someone will step up.

  805. trisha - never underestimate the power of a few words from Hank. May 21st, 2008 at 10:32 pm

Jerkface, jerkface, jerkface! Who cares???? I think you’ve been posting here a lot longer than I have. Who cares? How about every malcontent who posts on this forum, and that is quite a number!

Nobody cares right now, but let us have a problem with the 8th inning and you KNOW that we will have to have the trauma unit visiting this forum daily.

  806. SJ44 May 21st, 2008 at 10:33 pm

Melancon has three pitches he throws for strikes. Two fastballs (2 seam and 4 seam). Usually sits around 91-93 with late movement. His 2 seamer moves a lot like a cutter at times.

A NASTY curveball. A knee buckling type of curve. Can throw it for strikes in any count.

Also throws a slider and change. I’m not sure if the Yankees are letting him throw the slider. Sometimes, they don’t let guys coming off TJ Surgery throw it this soon in their recovery.

His two seam and four seam, along with his curveball, are a great trifecta of pitches for him.

Most of all, he has great command in the strike zone and isn’t afraid of facing hitters.

He pitched 3 shutout innings last night in Reading to get the win for Trenton. A scout friend of mine was at the game.

I e-mailed him this morning to ask him how Melancon looked and he told me he looked “great”.

He doesn’t work for the Yankees. He works for another team. He thinks Melancon can be in the majors by July if he keeps at the current pace.

He has followed him since college. When the Yankees drafted him, he e-mailed me and told me they got the “steal of the draft”.

He begged his team to draft him in the 5th and 6th rounds and they refused because they didn’t want to pay the bonus money for kid who was going to need TJ Surgery.

This was one case in which the Yankees money paid big dividends.

  807. TKinDC May 21st, 2008 at 10:33 pm

So do we figure 3 weeks to stretch out Joba until he starts regularly?

Mid-June leaves about two-thirds of the season to go or around 100 games give or take. Thats about 20 starts right?

I would guess that is a little aggressive with respect to the innings cap but they have never said it is a hard 140.

  808. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 11 ) May 21st, 2008 at 10:34 pm

I’m guessing Robertson, Cox or McCutchen

  809. whozat May 21st, 2008 at 10:34 pm

“And if it is, so be it. Until then, Rasner is it.”

I haven’t refuted that thought at any point.

  810. Drive 4-5 May 21st, 2008 at 10:35 pm

Nice win by the Yanks, even nicer to see them making a move to improve long term. The question of the month will be who replaces Joba in the pen? JB Cox perhaps? Here’s where losing Brian Bruney really hurts. Who would have said that a year ago? lol

What are the chances the Yanks bring up a Robertson or Horne and throwing them in the pen in August? I don’t see Veras being ready for the role.

Next up, finding a sensible solution at first base.

  811. Vince May 21st, 2008 at 10:35 pm

Yeah except that you aren’t sending Hughes to AAA for a stretct run. Rasner has been terrific, but by the time July comes and Hughes is healthy, there is no chance they keep him here in the rotation and banish their franchise pitcher.

  812. YankeeJosh May 21st, 2008 at 10:35 pm

    SJ44,

What’s your take on J.B. Cox? I’ve heard very good things about him. I know he’s a level below Melancon, but am hoping he and Melancon could be a two man bridge to Mo in the years to come.

I’m looking forward to seeing Kennedy pitch tomorrow. I’m hoping to see more progress from his last outing. Kennedy and Hughes are solid prospects who are going through growing pains. Just like Rasner did earlier in his career. Giving up on them because they hit some bumps is silly imo.

  813. Scorpio May 21st, 2008 at 10:36 pm

Singleton just backed you right up, SJ44!
He said to track the path of the minor leaguers.

  814. JoeT - 28 IN 09!! May 21st, 2008 at 10:36 pm

This can start to get really fun to watch. If we go on a winning streak (fun by itself), Joba becoming a starter again, AND we may get to see a young kid come up like Joba did last year for the 7th-8th inning role…. i’m excited

  815. Dee May 21st, 2008 at 10:36 pm

Wow, Michael Kay just said maybe Phil Hughes will become that 8th inning guys! I highly doubt it but that was some sound bite…

  816. Nick May 21st, 2008 at 10:36 pm

Whatever it is, Kennedy is not going to be in the rotation come the ASB.

    It’s either

    Joba/Hughes
    Joba Rasner
    Hughes/Rasner(The most unlikely)

Or someone is is removed from the rotation.

Hopefully Hughes comes back before Joba is transitioned so He’ll be able to show his mettle.

  818. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 11 ) May 21st, 2008 at 10:36 pm

SJ wouldn’t Melancon need AAA atleast ? anyway Tony Franklin did say he can pitch in the majors right now, I’m guessing it’s going to be McCutchen before Melancon.

  819. SJ44 May 21st, 2008 at 10:37 pm

I like both Cox and Robertson. I see them both though as 7th inning options.

I don’t see either guy as an 8th inning guy at the ML level.

I think both kids can pitch and, if they aren’t traded I believe we will see both in NY at some point during the season.

As far as upside though, Melancon has it over both of them.

The Yankees are in a good place with bullpen arms.

Ramirez, Ollie, Veras, Farnsworth, Hawkins, Cox, Robertson, Melancon and Patterson. That’s 9 arms.

Somebody will emerge in that group to pitch the 8th inning.

They don’t have ANYBODY in their system with the upside Joba has as a starter. That’s why he is going into the rotation.

  820. Jerkface May 21st, 2008 at 10:37 pm

I’m just not that big on ‘shut down’ bullpen guys. I’d rather have Wang or Joba go 7 and give up 1-3 :p

Our bullpen is vastly improved from last year, even taking out Joba.

Edwar looks legit. Veras looks pretty good. Ohlendorf was good before he got turned into the mop up guy. Patterson is waiting in the minors. Britton SHOULD BE UP.

Farnsworth had a good streak, though he is unreliable but as a 6th inning guy he is fine. Hawkins is decent too.

And between JB Cox, Melancon, and all the other guys SJ44 mentioned, I think we can find the innings in the 8th!

  821. Pepitone May 21st, 2008 at 10:37 pm

I guess I can stop drinking for tonight. But, there’s always tomorrow!

  822. VALIS May 21st, 2008 at 10:37 pm

Hmm, Darrell Rasner was just announced recipient of the 2008 Aaron Small Award.

  823. Frank Discussion May 21st, 2008 at 10:37 pm

I think Rasner has earned his slot, he has certainly paid his dues. I was watching the game on MASN, I live in Delaware so the MLB Extra Innings broadcast was blacked out. Jim Palmer was constantly praising Rasner’s approach, saying you don’t have to “light up the radar guns” to be an effective pitcher. Palmer always tells it like it is.

  824. trisha - never underestimate the power of a few words from Hank. May 21st, 2008 at 10:39 pm

Vince – Girardi said Rasner has the locked up the 4th position. I don’t know. Maybe I put Hughes in the bullpen and let him become my middle or long relief guy, or maybe even a spot starter. You don’t dump someone who has been lights out (IF that remains the case) because someone who hasn’t yet done the job is ready to rejoin the rotation! Don’t forget, there will be plenty of time to have Hughes as part of the rotation. That definitely is in the plans. But winning right now trumps trotting him out to the mound just because.

  825. Chicago Dave May 21st, 2008 at 10:40 pm

Frank Discussion – Thanks for that link you previously posted. I’ve been laughing my ass off!!!

  826. SJ44 May 21st, 2008 at 10:41 pm

    Brandon,

I don’t think Melancon needs too much time in AAA.

He is pretty refined at this point. Its just about getting innings in and building up arm strength.

I also wouldn’t sleep on Phil Hughes. I believe Phil is going to be a factor in the rotation the second half of the year. I don’t see Phil as a relief pitcher. He’s a starter.

The kid has too much talent to continue to struggle.

I think Phil and Joba will be pitching in the rotation the second half of the year. Somebody will either get hurt or be ineffective.

Its the way it always works.

  827. Vince May 21st, 2008 at 10:41 pm

Yeah, of course he has the four spot locked up right now. He is better than any other fourth option because joba is still in the bullpen and Hughes is injured. All that means is Igawa, Karstens and Kennedy are not favored over Rasner and rightfully so. Hughes is still like two months away, when he’s ready, he will be starting barring a physical setback.

  828. jason May 21st, 2008 at 10:41 pm

Wow, one win and one announcement and the mood is significantly better around here. I have becomed addicted to following the minor league teams and there is a lot to be excited about. The relievers have been mentioned.
But Horne is about to pitch again, Mccutcheon is in AAA, Sancez should be abck very soon, Garcia is pitching and is probably the only guy that comes close to Joba with stuff, Macallister has been tremendous, Betances when he gets his mechanics and command together can dominate, and then Brackman WOW!!

  829. Frank Discussion May 21st, 2008 at 10:42 pm

  831. Vince May 21st, 2008 at 10:43 pm

Besides, there is zero chance Mussina stays healthy all season even if he does stay effective. There will be plenty of time for spot starts.

  832. Jeff NJ May 21st, 2008 at 10:43 pm

Goes to show you, we almost have too much young pitching. Can’t we trade some for real needs like 1B? I think we can and will soon. Although maybe it’s not until ’09.

  833. Drive 4-5 May 21st, 2008 at 10:44 pm

We nearly forgot about Humberto Sanchez. Does anyone know how he’s progressing?

  834. trisha - never underestimate the power of a few words from Hank. May 21st, 2008 at 10:45 pm

Boys and girls, Girardi just about annointed Farnsy as his 8th inning pitcher.

    :D

Of course I’m chill with it.

    Oh well.

  835. jason May 21st, 2008 at 10:45 pm

Drive – I think I read he is targeted to return beginning of June.
Jeff – You can never ever ever have too much pitching. With that said, some of the lesser arms will absolutely have to be traded over time.

Jeter scores a run tonight and a Hot Babe

Is Derek Trying to Woo Minka?

Now that her ex-boyfriend John Mayer has completely moved on to courting Jennifer Aniston, actress Minka Kelly appears to be the object of several eligible A-listers’ affection, including those of New York Yankees superstar Derek Jeter.

The raven-haired beauty, 27, and the ex boy-toy of Vanessa Minnillo recently enjoyed a romantic meal at NYC’s Kobe Club, and Derek even scored Minka tickets to see his team play. Perhaps that’s why the actress recently stopped in to check out Derek’s pad at the luxurious Trump Towers in Midtown Manhattan.

But if Derek’s going to win this pennant, he might need to face off against Spider Man 3 star Topher Grace, with whom Minka also enjoyed an intimate dinner late last week.

  838. Kevin May 21st, 2008 at 10:47 pm

You can find decent 8th-inning guys anywhere. The idea of the ‘dominant setup guy’ is purely psychological, in my mind. By which I mean it’s more about having Joba in your back pocket, you know, just in case. But Joba’s already blown a lead and would blow more, just like every other reliever ever.

As for his replacement in that role, heck, Farnsworth’s had a pretty solid two months. Or just go with whoever the hot hand is among Veras/Ramirez/AAA callup du jour.

Sure, they might lose a game here and there. They’ll make it up when Joba is pitching 7 innings and giving up 1-2 runs in a game that might have been started by Igawa/Kennedy/other fill-in.

Of course, maybe Joba’s not great. Nothing is guaranteed.

But it has to come down to value. If you think a guy can be a high-quality starter, there’s absolutely no way he’d be more valuable as a 8th inning guy. I just don’t see that logic. If it turns out he’s not good (like how Mariano wasn’t a great starter – 5.50 ERA in 10 starts in ’95), then you simply shift him back to a role where he had success.

For now, we hope for the best, which would be if Wang-Chamberlain-Hughes kickstarts another title run. If that happens, no one will even remember what we were arguing about.

I think Kevin Whelan can also be another option later in the year.

  842. SJ44 May 21st, 2008 at 10:49 pm

Of course he is going to give Farnsworth the first shot. He has the most experience in that role.

Doesn’t mean its going to stay that way.

Its not like he can announce a guy that is in AA is the new 8th inning guy for the Yankees.

Give it time, then see where we are at or around the AS Break.

  843. S.A.- Welcome back Yankees Offense. Don't leave us! May 21st, 2008 at 10:50 pm

Moose and that dry erase board are really something.

  845. jason May 21st, 2008 at 10:52 pm

Whelan too – I forgot about him. He is back and pitching. Certainly has the stuff. If he can gain control he will be very good.

My top secret special choice for the role is Christian Garcia. He is back (I believe he is starting tomorrow at Tampa). If he progresses through the system he could be ready for a call-up at the end of the year. He has to be on the 40 man next year anyway. He is probably the closest to Joba-like in stuff. With the injury history maybe you give a go (or at least a try for the end of this year). If healthy he can be in the Joba and Hughes category of top of the rotation guys no qestion.

  846. SJ44 May 21st, 2008 at 10:52 pm

    Re: Whelan, not this year.

His stuff is not there yet. He’s still in A ball trying to get it back.

If he was on his game, his stuff doesn’t translate to 8th inning work.

He’s not a swing and miss kind of guy.

If he can stay healthy this year, and get back to AA, while pitching effectively, its a good year for him, IMO.

He’s missed some significant time with his elbow injury and other guys have passed him by.

  847. trisha - never underestimate the power of a few words from Hank. May 21st, 2008 at 10:53 pm

He he he. Farnsworth is the guy. Get used to it kids.

Yeah it’ll stay that way and if Farnsworth is going good and then has one stinker of an outing, it will STILL stay that way. And I am going to get the smelling salts out now because I have been around here when poor Kyle has a bad outing and it ain’t pretty. Grown men crying, bodies all over the forum, people heading for the GW Bridge, erudite “proclamations” of Farnswsorth being finished.

    Can’t wait!

How do I know? Steve Phillips just said it is a bad idea!

  849. EndLessMike May 21st, 2008 at 10:54 pm

Glad they finally see that Kennedy is overrated.Hughes and Joba will be staters by next year (if JOba is the next DWight Gooden) and we still need a stater by next year in free agency or trade.

  850. CB May 21st, 2008 at 10:54 pm

The goal of this season should be to make the playoffs – they may need to scratch their way into the postseason but that’s fine.

To me the goal is to get to the post season with a rotation headed up by Wang and Joba.

You have a 5 game series with Wang and Joba throwing 3 of the 5 games – I’ll take my chances.

As amazing as Joba has been out of the pen for the yankees we have not seen him pitch up to his potential yet.

Why? Because we haven’t seen his entire repertoire. He’s got more weapons than what we’ve seen.

Joba’s going to be a better starter than he is a reliever.

Now that does not mean he’s going to have better statistics as a starter because he won’t.

But as a starter we’re going to see him be able to do things that very, very, very few pitchers in all of baseball are capable of.

In the pen he’s a dominant force. But there are pitchers who can perform at similar levels – Papelbon, Rodriguez, Putz, etc.

None of those guys can do what Joba can as a starter.

He’ll have significant growing pains especially because he has to transition back to starting.

But he’s going to be something else as a starter. The kind of pitcher this team has been chasing after (one bad free agent signing after another, one bad trade after another) for over a decade.

Look at what Tim Lincecum is doing for the giants (not his W-L becasue the giants stink – look at his peripherals).

    Joba is better than Lincecum.

  851. jason May 21st, 2008 at 10:56 pm

SJ Whelan is definately a swing and miss guy. That was never his problem. The control was the issue.

  855. DYNASTY IS DESTINY! May 21st, 2008 at 11:10 pm

I want to believe that Farnsworth could be a good setup guy, I really do…it’s just that every time I think he can meet the challenge he goes and does something like he did against the Mets last weekend…

But we’ve got to believe there’s somebody in the minors like a Melancon that SJ44 alluded to that can do the job…

If that’s the case, then it will be interesting to see how good a starter Joba will be…we might become very strong indeed!

But let’s be clear…just like we can’t lose games 12-2 like we did yesterday, we also cannot afford to lose too many 3-2 or 2-1 games that we blow in the 7th and 8th or 9th for that matter…

    GO YANKS!!!!

  856. AeroFANatic May 22nd, 2008 at 12:23 am

    Let’s see :

Chamberlain is at 20 innings on the season. My BET would be that that for the next 48 games up until the All Star Break, we will see 30 more innings pitched. First, 2 innings every 3-4 days. Then, 3-4 innings every 5-6 days…

With 50 IP at the all star break, Joba becomes a full time starter. 67 games in the REG season after the all star break. If Joba AVERAGES 6 innings in those 13-14 starts, that would put him right at 130 innings come playoff time (if they make it).

So, if things break right….Joba will hit his 150 innings limit for 2008, in the World Series.

I would imagine Farnsworth will get the 8th inning for now, and if he completely stinks up the joint it will become Olly/Hawkins until Melancon or Cox is ready to assume the role…

The plans #’s seem to work out well….here is hoping for the best.
