Well spoken Peter.

I totally agree. Transition him, monitor his innings and prepare for the long term. This season is definitely not lost, so it is fair to be optimistic that he can help out the rotation this year.

What is going to happen to Ian Kennedy? He has been pitching terribly? Long relief? Trade bait? Another year in AAA?

Any updates on Hughes?

I can hardly wait for about Joba's 4th start - he'll get lit up some, and his fastball will be hitting 92-93 (due to pacing for distance). The video analysts and this board will be alight with the "what's wrong with Joba" analysis.

Guaranteed.

The IP ramp up process doesn't have to take 6 weeks - but the math in your analysis was solid. Pitchers coming off extended DL stints throw pens to build up (as does any starter between outings), then go 2, 3, 4-5, 6 and maybe 1 more 6-7 (yeah, I know it's really a pitch count thing). That's 5 outings - takes maybe 4 weeks. That's about 22 IP. Leaves about 90-95 starting innings to the 135 range, or 16 starts. There's your number - about 1 month to starting.

Does anyone really think the Yanks would shut Joba down for the Series rather than exceed the 150 IP threshold? Look at what the Tribe did with Cabrera last year. His arm hasn't fallen off yet, though there still time. This is not a hard and fast rule, its a guideline.

it's like saying "i'd rather have the topping of my ice cream than the actual ice cream". Yes, the topping finishes the experience but it's nothing without the ice cream under it. And that ice cream makes up a lot more of the dessert than the topping does.

And yes, I am hungry.

Of course starters can fail, and they could do it more often than relievers, that's why you give your best pitchers the chance to start.

Does anyone on the board know what the average outing of a starting pitcher in the Majors is today?

Vince,

And starting pitchers don't lose big games? Didn't Wang fail twice in the ALDS last year?

Let's see :

Chamberlain is at 20 innings on the season. My BET would be that that for the next 48 games up until the All Star Break, we will see 30 more innings pitched. First, 2 innings every 3-4 days. Then, 3-4 innings every 5-6 days...

With 50 IP at the all star break, Joba becomes a full time starter. 67 games in the REG season after the all star break. If Joba AVERAGES 6 innings in those 13-14 starts, that would put him right at 130 innings come playoff time (if they make it).

So, if things break right....Joba will hit his 150 innings limit for 2008, in the World Series.

I would imagine Farnsworth will get the 8th inning for now, and if he completely stinks up the joint it will become Olly/Hawkins until Melancon or Cox is ready to assume the role...

The plans #'s seem to work out well....here is hoping for the best.

I think you just proved the point Dynasty.

Wohlers was excellent that season and still lost a WS game when they needed a win. An ace will give you 28-30 very good to great starts and 6-9 innings every time out, even te best relievers will still blow 5 games ever year and u never know when it will happen.
