A few minor-league notes

Mark Melancon through two games for Trenton: 5 2 1 1 0 8.
At some point Chase Wright (6-1, 2.70) has to get a chance at Scranton, no? I realize Mike Lowell’s homer just landed, but he is left-handed.
Jason Jones (7-0, 2.13) can’t be long for the Eastern League, either.
Here comes Austin Jackson (.275/.371/.409).
Austin Romine (.350/.375/.450) and Jesus Montero (.307/.350/.466) are making the Yankees look pretty smart down in Charleston. I’m going to try and catch the RiverDogs when they come to Lakewood in August. Very, very interesting bunch.
Jesus is third in the SAL with 36 RBI.
A reader from Cancun, Mexico, wrote to tell me about a RHP named Alfredo Aceves. He was 4-1, 2.11 in eight starts for Tampa. 47 innings, 32 hits (one HR), 8 walks and 37 Ks. Pretty impressive. He’s not in the media guide, so I believe he’s a recent signing. He either is with Trenton or on the way. Anybody know?
I’ll post more when I find out more about him.
UPDATE, 4:45 p.m.: An alert reader found this story on Aceves.

Do we think Melancon will be up here by the All Star break?
I’m losing it. At first I thought Alfredo Aceves was 4 foot one inch tall…........
can we not pressure melancon to be joba 2?
butterball-
I thought the same thing
LOL..
butterball..I thought the same thing too for a second. I had to reread it.
Aceves from a poster on another Yankee board said he or Wright should be in AAA over No-K Igawa, he can dial it up to 95 actually sits 90-92..IDK if it’s true, BTW Pete how could you forget Tabata and Garcia’s 10 K performance last night vs Daytona
Alfredo Aceves made his debut on May 20th at Trenton.
Busta O is gonna talk about Johan on Kay at 4:00
“He either is with Triotnon or on the way. Anybody know?”
I believe he got moved to trenton this week sometime and made a start there. 7 innings, I think, of well-pitched ball. RAB had it in their down-on-the-farm box scores a couple days ago.
Alfredo Aceves

Aceves was called up to Trenton last week. He made his AA debut the other night and pitched 7 shoutout innings.
The Yankees signed him out of the Mexican League. An under the radar signing. Good sink on the fastball, keeps everything down in the zone.
Melancon pitched 3 shutout innings after him to get the win in extra innings.
Austin Romine had been out a month with an injury. Was just activated the other day and DH’ed last night.
Hopefully, he’s ok to catch to give Montero a break. Once he gets refreshed, I expect him to go on another offensive tear.
The problem with Chase Wright getting promoted is as follows:
In about a month, you are going to have a starting rotation in NY of Wang, Pettitte, Moose, Rasner and Chamberlain.
That means, Kennedy will be back in Scranton. He will have Marquez, Horne and McCutchen also with him in that rotation.
By Early July, Hughes will join them. They still have Igawa to deal with in the puzzle. They just moved Steve White to the bullpen.
Where does Chase fit in the puzzle? That’s the question.
There may well be a logjam at Scranton that keeps Chase in AA all season. Barring injuries, of course.
I know you can’t mention all the Yankee prospects so I’m gonna give a shout out to Ivan Nova. The other night he threw 8 innings, 2 hits, 0 runs in high A tampa. Plus he has a cool name.
Aceves just got called up to Trenton to take the place of McCutcheon in the rotation, and had a great first start.
I forgot to add, Jason Jones is in the same boat as Wright.
The logjam in Scranton may well keep those guys in AA all season.
don’t forget Colin Curtis .288/.372/.417 w/ 3 HR, 24 RBI, 33 R
i think it also must be noted that all of these guys are in our system right now.
that can very easily change in about a month and a half or so…
Chase Wright, or (name pitching prospect here) could be pitching for Oakland or parts elsewhere come August.
Do you move Wright to the pen and see what he can do as a lefty one-inning guy? Or, do you keep him at AA?
What if Kennedy is pitching better than Moose at the end of June when Joba’s ready to go into the rotation?
And what do you do about Dan Giese? Do you bring him to the bigs as a swingman at some point? Wait for him to start sucking? I don’t think anyone’s going to ask for him in a trade, but he’s just doing so WELL!
SJ you are right there will be a major log jam in the AAA rotation.
Between now and the time Joba is ready there is a 3 way competition between Moose, Rasner and Kennedy to see which guy has to go to the bullpen or down to AAA. I think if Kennedy is the odd man out he’ll be sent down. However if Ian pitches better than Ras or Moose I could see him taking the fifth spot and one of the other two guys becoming long reliever.
Giese is only a 2 pitch pitcher. He really isn’t suited for starting work at the big league level.
His numbers, like Jim Brower’s last year, may be more of an aberration.
The Yankees have better arms in their system to give a swingman’s role to than Giese, IMO.
Patrick,
Its why I think the Yankees may make a deal at some point (at the trade deadline or off-season) for a first baseman or a RH hitting OF. Using the young pitchers as bait.
Their young pitching is the envy of baseball and Cash will be able to use it to beef up the team for the future at the right time.
Plus, they need to free up some room on the 40 man roster. Its too pitching heavy on the 40 man now, IMO.
The Yankees are in a good spot for the future. They just need some of the guys on the present roster to pull their weight.
If they do, they will be ok this year even with all the transitioning moves that are taking place.
There was an article about him (Aceves) on the Yankees’ front page (via MiLB.com) a couple of days ago detailing a 7-inning outing of shutout ball that he pitched. I believe he’s in Trenton.
Aceves is probably the pitcher most likely to get sent down if Christian Garcia continues his dominance. Either that, or someone will have to be called up to AAA by then (Jason Jones?)
Aceves is now with Trenton. 25, RHP. Pitched for Trenton a few days ago. 7 IP, 0 R, 5 H, 1 walk, 7 K’s on top of the Tampa stats posted above.
Giese may only be a two-pitch pitcher, but I’d still rather have seen him than Igawa.
I think Garcia stays in Tampa all season. There is no reason to move him up right now.
For this season, its about staying healthy and getting innings in for him.
I think he will end up on the 40 man roster (knocking him out of the Rule 5 Derby) and be in Trenton next season.
Aceves is in Trenton for the season. He’s 25 and is pitching too well to be demoted.
I did a bit of rehab in the same place as Chris Garcia last year. He’s a super nice and funny kid, but didn’t seem terribly focused. “Little kid in a big body” is the best way to describe him. Hopefully he’s matured a bit and ready to work towards becoming a major league player. I wouldn’t count on a fast rise considering how slow its been to date.
Am I the only guy in the world who can’t decipher those stats?
I think they mean:
5 2 1 1 0 8 = IP, Hits, Runs, Earned Runs, Walks, Strikeouts?
(.275/.371/.409) = Batting Average/On-base/Slugging?
It might be helpful when posting stats like that to give a little key the first time you write stats in that format in the article, similar to how uncommon abbreviations are spelled out the first time used in an article:
5 2 1 1 0 8 (IP/H/R/ER/BB/K)
.275/.371/.409 (AVG/OBP/SLG)
Hey Peter while your looking at the Charleston team check out Zach McAllister…he is completly unhittable over there
Aceves plays for the Tampa Yankees
I think the amount of pitching at AA and AAA is going to NECESSITATE the Yankees deal young pitching away for some pieces this Summer.
I
wouldlike to see less of ‘aging veterans in the last year of their deal’ and more ML ready 20-something position players. 1B is a huge need right now. A right-handed starting OFer also. Hopefully Damon’s hitting well by the ASB and can be dealt, and see if the Padres’ll take Igawa for his contract.Pete –
Thanks for the heads-up about the Charleston team playing in Lakewood in August. I just check the schedule and we will have just returned from our Baseball/Amusement Park Road trip the day the River Dogs get to town. So, we’re going to head out either Saturday or Sunday to catch one of the games.
I just heard Girardi was suspended for his activies last night. Is that true? And do managers usually get suspended in those circumstances?

“At some point Chase Wright (6-1, 2.70) has to get a chance at Scranton, no?”
No.
testing
Chase Wright may be unfairly judged based on 2 bad outings last year.
Nardi Contreras has been working with Wright since spring training and the results are showing.
When Igawa was given a failed start when Kennedy was sent down it was Chase Wright that should have got the call but was it the money issue that took precedent over a win ?
Marc W,
Aceves got promoted to Trenton. Christian Garcia took his spot in Tampa’s rotation.
Saw Garcia pitch last night, his offspeed stuff was unhittable. The Daytona Cubs were swinging in the dirt all night.
I think SJ44 has got it right. We have a nice problem in the minors right now, too many starting pitchers. With Karstens returning, Giese somehow transforming himself into the best pitcher in Scranton and Igawa taking up space there, we don’t have enough innings to go round. When Horne comes back it’ll get worse.
I’d start calling Billy Beane and seeing how much Harden would cost us. Lets turn quantity into quality. I know he is an injury risk but if healthy he is a game winner. If he only pitches 10 regular season innings I don’t care, as log as he is healthy come September. Beane has a habit of overvaluing people but if we can make put together a package of pitchers centered around Horne or McCutcheon I’d be willing to make the deal – although it can’t include Melancon.
SJ You say Giese is only a 2 pitch pitcher. He really isn’t suited for starting work at the big league level. Is Hughes just a 2 pitch pitcher. I know his to pitches fastball/curve are much better. But I feel like the reason Phil hasnt been good at the maor league level is because he lacks pitches. Its the fastball or the curve its not hard to know whats coming and crush it.
Pete:
I’ve just emailed you the link of Alfredo Aceves’ debut at Trenton. He had another fine outing.
No way he’ll be demoted to Tampa, as Dan said
