Greetings from Camden – and thanks

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on May 26, 2008 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

It’s a beautiful sunny Memorial Day at Camden Yards. Arrived here early today after an easy drive from New York. It’ll be Darrell Rasner against Garrett Olson at 1:35 p.m. Check back later for the lineups.

Memorial Day seems like an appropriate time to thank all the military people who read this blog and my stories in the newspaper. Based on your e-mails, I know we have readers in Iraq, Afganistan, South Korea, Germany and a bunch of other places.

It always makes my day to hear from you guys and thanks so much for serving. The baseball players aren’t the heroes, you are.

As for the rest of you knuckleheads, be safe out there.

I have many family members that served or are now serving in the Military….my hat goes off to ALL men & women that have served our country. The freedom that we have in this country, I think, is very often taken for granted. Memorial day really should be only 1 day of 365 days that we recoginize that there are actual people out there that risk their lives and have given their lives in the past to protect it. Happy Memorial day to ya, Pete and to all that visit here regularly and today ! ;-)

A day without hitting a traffic back-up on I-95 near White Marsh, MD. is truly a day to give thanks.

    Happy Memorial Day to all.

    Rasner vs Olsen
    IPK vs Burres
    Pettite vs Guthrie

Here’s the Scouting Reports from Yankees.com on the O’s pitchers:

Olson was impeccable through his first four starts, but he ran into a wall against the Yankees in his fifth outing. The southpaw tied his career highs for most earned runs allowed (six) and shortest outing (2 2/3 innings) en route to his first defeat of the season. Olson will get the ball again on Monday, a product of the leeway his fast start earned for him.

Burres pitched into the eighth inning against the Yankees in his last start and has been one of Baltimore’s most consistent players this season. The southpaw is lined up next to another left-hander — Garrett Olson — in the rotation, an arrangement the Orioles may eventually decide to alter.

Despite taking the loss in his last start, Guthrie tossed a solid 6 2/3 innings. The right-hander has allowed one run in each of his past two starts, and tossed 114 pitches in Friday’s loss to the Rays. Although the hurler did not record a strikeout in a May 18 loss to the Nationals, Guthrie managed to fan five Rays in his most recent outing and will look for some offensive support in this home game. Guthrie is 1-2 at Camden Yards this season, with a 3.12 ERA.

Didya realize that we are only 3 games back in the loss column to the only other team in the AL East that won’t show themselves to only be a “rabbit” this year ? I dare say that 20-25 was our “rock bottom” and that this “worst to first” move we are now in the middle of, could be done in record time !

Just a small point regarding Memorial Day (as distinct from Veteran’s Day):

Memorial Day is specifically dedicated to those military personnel who have lost their life in the service of their country. Veteran’s Day (in November) honors all who have served in the military.

Obviously, I give my thanks and appreciation to all of those who are currently serving. I can still remember my own fear and trepidation when I was drafted into the USMC back in 1969 (I stayed stateside for two years).

But today, I say a special thank you to those who have paid the ultimate price, usually at a very young age. All baseball fans can be thankful that we can respectfully disagree under the canopy of freedom that they have provided.

I hope that’s not too preachy, but it saddens me that a lot of people don’t actually know what Memorial Day is about. To those of you who do, thanks for bearing with me.

P.S. Why can’t the Red Sox win on the road?

I can’t make it to today’s game but I’ll be there tomorrow and Wednesday. I plan on hitting some of my favorite watering holes in Fells Point a little bit early. Happy Memorial Day to everyone.

    Brian (Red Sox Fan),

Scary time to be drafted, right in the aftermath of the Tet Offensive. I served 10 years in the US Army, too young for Vietnam though. My respect too all the veterans on this blog, thanks for your service and sacrifice.

On an unrelated note, I think David Ortiz was right on the money regards his comments about the new MLB emphasis on “speeding up the game”.

I also wish to echo thanks to the military personal around the world. Stay safe!

  18. Rockin' Rich May 26th, 2008 at 10:27 am

Yes! Big shout out to the great folks in the military.

Thank you for your service to the country and apologies for allowing stupid politicians who never served to abuse your dedication and patriotism.

  19. Fran May 26th, 2008 at 10:29 am

Jennifer- you must have enjoyed being at yesterday’s game!

Lets not forget Armed Forces Radio.I spent countless hours straining to hear any ball game back in England during the 60′s.I heard Micks 500th and Mclains 30th.on the air.

  22. Brian from PA May 26th, 2008 at 11:05 am

    what does knucklehead even mean?

  23. RonH May 26th, 2008 at 11:18 am

Pete, your comments about the military are right on the money. As the leader of the knucklehead brigade, you be sure to stay safe and have a happy also!! We’d be lost without our commander.

  24. Blargh May 26th, 2008 at 12:16 pm

    Happy Memorial Day

Giving up your life to protect someone else’s life is the ultimate sacrifice; my hat off to you, soldiers of the past and present.

  25. Matt Lukas May 26th, 2008 at 1:24 pm

The best way to support our troops is to bring ‘em home.

  26. 27 WS Champs May 26th, 2008 at 1:35 pm

Support them by passing the new GI Bill in Congress.

By the way President Bush and McCain will Veto because it will hurt retention rates.
