computer.JPGIt seems that this post has to be made every few months, which is disheartening. You would like to think people would know better.

Enough with the stupid comments!

I woke up today to find three e-mails from people who said they used to enjoy writing in the comments section but they stopped because of all the garbage being spewed about. I agree.

What’s worse is that some of the regulars – and you know who you are – are taking part.

This is a newspaper blog. The last thing I want to do is restrict freedom of speech. We in the media feel pretty strongly that the Founding Fathers got that one right. But if somebody disagrees with you, please resist the urge to write back and call them names. This is not second grade.

I don’t have the time to do through and moderate 1,500+ comments a night. But if I notice you’re being a persistent trash talker, you’re out. There are several other Yankee blogs out there where morons gather. Feel free to leave.

Just think a little before you post. If you don’t have something insightful to add to the discussion, take a pass.

A few guidelines:

1. Ignore the trolls. Every blog has them and in our case they’re mostly Red Sox fans angry that bars up there close at 1 a.m. Just don’t respond, period. They will go away.

2. If the Yankees give up a run or lose a game, please refrain from declaring the season is over. You just look stupid. Or did you forget what happened last year and the year before that and the year before that? One pitch or one game does not a season make. Just relax.

3. If there is a persistent knucklehead or two, please send me an e-mail letting me know who the person is, an example of their idiocy and the time of their post and I’ll see what I can do.

My job is covering the team, not moderating this blog. I greatly appreciate the fact that you read it and if you want to comment, I applaud your desire. Just try and make it something worthwhile, OK?

Thanks.

“There are several other Yankee blogs out there where morons gather.”

I would love if it you would call them out. Haha

  2. frits May 27th, 2008 at 12:48 pm

I also love that ClipArt computer logo. That’s high tech!

  3. Don Vito A. Bellamo May 27th, 2008 at 12:50 pm

We appreciate you covering the team for us, Pete. Thanks !

  4. a-rod this year manning May 27th, 2008 at 12:51 pm

im voting PETER for president ! you allways say the right things!

  5. G. Love May 27th, 2008 at 12:51 pm

I was stunned to read people threatening SJ to fist fights. Jesus, go somewhere else with that nonsense.

I like to come here to vent, but mostly I come here because Pete breaks news constantly keeping us updated ahead of the curve and I come here for SJ’s posts. I don’t understand how his thoughts/opinions make anyone that angry. People get mad because he knows things? It’s like bullies beating up the smart kids in high school. It’s ridiculous.

Between that and someone posting under my name lately, my patience is wavering.

I know people have asked for it before, but I think registration and moderators would help solve these instances.

  6. gayle May 27th, 2008 at 12:52 pm

can someone explain to me the Torri Hunter stealing of second last night in terms of baseball rules.First time I have ever seen that before. Does the catcher or pitcher have to call time out after each play has ended and that is why he was able to steal the base with the pitcher just getting back to the mound. For some reason and obviously I am wrong I thought that the play once ended was dead until the ump called for play to resume.

  7. DLev May 27th, 2008 at 12:55 pm

Unless the ball is out of play (ie in the stands or dugout), then time is in, and players can advance. Time out has to be called for there to be a break.

I think it’s different for at least slow-pitch softball and maybe kid’s leagues.

  8. Joe from Long Island May 27th, 2008 at 12:56 pm

gayle – I didn’t see the play, but it sounds like a delayed-steal. Time is not routinely called, and the theory is that the baserunner catches the pitcher/catcher/2B/SS napping.

    Am I right?

  9. MackNova May 27th, 2008 at 12:57 pm

I also love the clip-art computer to help get the point across. Adds some color to the blog.

    Agreed Peter

  11. Bryan May 27th, 2008 at 12:59 pm

    Thank you Pete

  12. jay destro May 27th, 2008 at 1:01 pm

it’s become a crybaby chat room more than a place to discuss the yankees, i find it a bit hard to keep up lately.

  13. Cathy May 27th, 2008 at 1:02 pm

Thank you Peter. Unfortunately the trolls and keyboard gangstas take the fun out of blogs & message boards. I don’t mind a strong analytical argument on a topic, but the stupid threats & name calling is really childish and unproductive.

  14. gayle May 27th, 2008 at 1:06 pm

Joe it wasnt even as contrived as that. Teh pitcher had the ball and was walking back to the mound. The second baseman has his back to the mound and was walking back to h is position and Hunter took off so when the pitcher saw him go the second basemans back was to him and no one was there to cover. I will see if I can find a link it was something like I said I had never seen before.

This idea that anyone posting anti-SJ is a troll and/or should be banned is ludicrous. Threatening posters with “big bad Pete” as the blog-police is childish and degrades this blog.

I have been a follower of Pete’s blog from the beginning. I have been aggravated by the pompous pontificating of SJ to a point where I commented negatively about it several times. Finding that I was not making any impact I took the advice of SJ and others to just ignore his posts. That has worked nicely until recent days. So much of this blog is wasted (notice correct spelling Brandon) first on sniping at SJ and then his rebuttals and his supporters sniping at the snipers that I am forced to read his post to find out what it was he said to upset the readership. So now I have to not only ignore his posts but every post that refers to him. This self-censorship cuts out most of the enjoyment of being here so I am taking a sabbatical. I’ll check back in later months or years to see if sanity has returned here. Bye bye!!

  16. murphydog May 27th, 2008 at 1:09 pm

I agree with G. Love: “It’s like bullies beating up the smart kids in high school. It’s ridiculous.”

Well said. Aggressive ignorance is a sad thing. But we’ll all try to do a better job of not feeding the trolls going forward.

  17. Jeff NJ May 27th, 2008 at 1:10 pm

Now that the holiday weekend is over, the quality of the posts will improve. As for the Yankees, tonight is a pretty important game for both Kennedy and the Yankees. Was his last start a fluke? Who leaves the rotation when Joba is ready? Big questions for IPK. As for the Yankees, they lost yesterday, time to start another win streak. Have to win this series vs. a division rival.

  18. Guy Incognito May 27th, 2008 at 1:11 pm

I’d like to see, one day, a blog where users can greenlight or redlight certain commenters. Like, you would have a checkbox next to a commenter’s handle, and everyone would be greenlit by default. If you came across a troll or just your average garden-variety jerk, you could redlight them and their posts wouldn’t show up for you. Perhaps that would require registration.

But I submit that Pete’s little ol’ blog here has become one of the top three Yankee blogs on the ‘tubes, and given that the Yankees are THE most famous pro sports franchise in America, and quite possibly in the world, that LoHud might give some thought to requiring registration.

Condescending, holier-than-thou goodbye notes to a blog are not necessary.

  22. Bellair May 27th, 2008 at 1:20 pm

pete shouldn’t be wasting his time with babies

  23. Angel May 27th, 2008 at 1:22 pm

Much less being posted twice. :)

  24. stuart May 27th, 2008 at 1:22 pm

if you disagree with Sj just disagree. I really like his perspective.

I think I know baseball but I have no knowledge of the Yankee prospects so I really enjoy his opinion on them.

Any update on Abeledajo and timeframe for coming back.. Why not let Joba pitch tonight 50 to 60 pitchs the odds of Kenneedy needing help are much higher then Pettitte and Joba pitched on Saturday(I think so that is 3 days off after 45 pitches)…

  25. Pokey May 27th, 2008 at 1:22 pm

    Guy,
ESPN has that on their boards and it works very well. I was kinda shocked when I started posting here, as most message board sites run by newspapers have user registration. I would like to see it just so people can’t steal someone’s screen name and post idiotic stuff.

  26. wood is good May 27th, 2008 at 1:23 pm

I rarely read the comments anymore anyway. I just come here for Pete and his stylin’s. As always, thank you, Peter, for having the best Yankee blog.

  27. TKinDC May 27th, 2008 at 1:23 pm

Alas, poor Southern Yankee, we knew him well. :(

  28. YankeesTech May 27th, 2008 at 1:26 pm

I love to read all of SJ posts… I may not agree with all his posts but for the most part the guy is more of an asset to this blog than a burden. People who have problems with his posts shouldn’t act childish and attack him personally.

  29. Pokey May 27th, 2008 at 1:26 pm

Oh, and Pete, I just wanted to thank you for the great job you do with this blog. I am a blogger myself and I spend way too much time each day cruising the ‘net, and without a doubt this is the best blog I read every day, on any subject matter.

Keep up the good work sir!

  30. Stephen May 27th, 2008 at 1:26 pm

    Make it something worthwhile?

As someone who works in journalism, I know how valuable, and rare, a high-comment-rate blog is for newspaper Web sites, so I wonder why the writer of such a blog would complain about the nature of those comments.

Anyway, I take umbrage with one of your points, and I respond to it as a Yankee fan. You said “did you forget what happened last year and the year before that and the year before that? One pitch or one game does not a season make. Just relax.”

I remember what happened in each of those years. Do you, Pete? A +$200 million payroll in earl exit after early exit.

You might be surprised to find out that most Yankee fans aren’t happy with the team making the postseason every year. They expect more.

Last year’s abysmal first quarter of the season affected the team because it was a glimpse into the team, just as this year’s mediocre start has been.

It is NOT irrational or naive to glean something from the first 50 games of a season. Bad habits and trends, like good ones, tend to come back around.

By your logic, should this team once again make their way into the postseason and exit early for the same reasons they are losing games now, there would be no connection between those occurrences, because, after all, the first 50 games don’t’ count.

    I don’t buy it.

  31. Frankie May 27th, 2008 at 1:27 pm

    Southern Yankee: agree 110%

  32. S.A.-Let's Go Yankees! May 27th, 2008 at 1:30 pm

“People who have problems with his posts shouldn’t act childish and attack him personally.”

    Totally agree.
But it seems as though some cannot have an adult discussion with him. If they don’t agree with what he says, some start getting personal and acting childish. Quite sad.

  33. Jimmy the Saint May 27th, 2008 at 1:32 pm

    Pokey:
You have less commenters when you have to sign up. People don’t want their in-box flooded with garbage. Besides, Pete is trying to treat his readers(and commenters) like adults. I appreciate that. I hope everyone else here does as well. Pete is a cool guy. Don’t get him angry.

  34. Boston dog May 27th, 2008 at 1:33 pm

Just because people don’t like or care for sj44 doesn’t mean those people should be banned. Is this Russia? It is part of freedom of thought. You don’t like the responses to what you say stop posting!!

  35. TurnTwo May 27th, 2008 at 1:37 pm

    Southern who?

dont let the door hit your bum on the way out.

i just want to thank all the regulars on the board who keep it civil, and are here for the real interest we all share, which is the yankees.. and for helping me get thru my boring days at work with some entertaining and intriguing yankees discussion.

we may not all agree on how to get there, but every one of us, and you know who you are, is here for the common purpose of #27 and beyond.

  36. Nutsky May 27th, 2008 at 1:40 pm

The regulars here try to intimidate the newcomers with calling them trolls or ganging up on them. Makes people not want to post out if fear of getting name called

  37. Jeff NJ May 27th, 2008 at 1:42 pm

Peter, speaking of comments. Lately my comments aren’t making it through the filter. Or sometimes they show up much later back when I posted it, which defeats the purpose. Any reason you know of why that is happening?

  38. Barry Lane May 27th, 2008 at 1:42 pm

I’ve been a Yankee fan since Joe Collins played a little bit of first base, and this blog feels like family to me. Certainly, I do not always agree with SJ44, but his posts are heartfelt, intelligent and add to the discourse, as do Doreen, Murphydog and others. In terms of hits, I have no idea where this blog rates, but in terms of taste and erudition Pete has to be at the top.

    Keep it going guys.

  39. Kevin May 27th, 2008 at 1:44 pm

u don’t like what someone says? Ignore them. Brain surgery huh?

  40. Harry May 27th, 2008 at 1:46 pm

I had to get threatened yesterday by good ole SJ. Wanted to take it up in real time. Now that is supposed to be how things are done here? I didn’t cry or whine. I just gave it right back like a man.

  41. gayle May 27th, 2008 at 1:47 pm

Sometimes the hardest thing is not to hit the submit button lol.

If perhaps everyone would use a little common sense and not let the anger, stupidity of others get to them that might be best.

I personally enjoy the discussion on this blog and I have learned a lot about many things I didnt know before and am a MUCH more knowledgeable Yankee and baseball fan because of it. However like I said not hitting the submit comment button may be the smartest thing to do on certain days and at certain hours lol.

  42. To May 27th, 2008 at 1:47 pm

SJ is the best poster here. Even if he is holier than thou 90% of time

  43. Keith May 27th, 2008 at 1:50 pm

    Pete-

Totally unrelated to the computer issues, but I was wondering your opinion of the Yanks’ latest personnel decisions to drop A-Gon and keep Morgan? Seemed as if Ensberg was a goner going into Memorial Day.

Also, I know he’s a fan favorite, but is Shelley Duncan’s leash getting a little tighter as the season goes on? If the Yanks were to make an upgrade or a change, I’d think that 1B/DH spot he takes up would be one of them.

  44. Jorge (México) May 27th, 2008 at 1:50 pm

Agree, Pete. This is what your buddy Mark Feinsand should’ve done when trolls began to load his site. But he didn’t. So, all the regulars (me included) who were enjoying his blog, had to get away. And now, if you check his site, you’ll find out that there are less than a dozen comments every day. A shame. I hope that never happens here. Because this is one of the top Yankees blogs all around the world.

  45. Blargh May 27th, 2008 at 1:51 pm

If a person barges in and just spews insults, or act like an ass in general, of course he isn’t going to be welcomed; to receive respect, one must also give respect. One of the basic tenets that basic parenting, or even society in general, teaches.

Wouldn’t surprise me if this blog is the most popular Yankees-related blog out there; this blog is the first search result if you google ‘Yankees blog’. Although, I have yet to brush up on how Google orders search results…

  46. raymagnetic ®™ May 27th, 2008 at 1:52 pm

“You might be surprised to find out that most Yankee fans aren’t happy with the team making the postseason every year. They expect more.”

Well then if that’s the case let me say that most Yankee fans are spoiled.

No wonder other fans don’t like Yankees fans. I guess the Yankees should reel off 33 championships in a row, that sure would make baseball a fun sport to watch.

I seriously doubt however that most Yankee fans aren’t happy with JUST making the playoffs.

  47. Skinnyhead May 27th, 2008 at 1:53 pm

Who has the time to sift through all these responses anyway? Do any of you people have jobs? or lives?

  48. murphydog May 27th, 2008 at 1:53 pm

“SJ is the best poster here. Even if he is holier than thou 90% of time”

I think the correct term is “confident” ;)

  49. 86w183 May 27th, 2008 at 1:55 pm

Pete—- following up on Keith’s question, when are the Yanks going to address their two most pressing problems. No lefty in the bullpen and too few RH hitters? I have mentioned in here Nady and Marte’ as two players who would be ideal additions, especially if Nady could play 1B. I’m more and more convinced that Ensberg is done and Duncan is a 4-A player.

If not Nady/Marte’… what RH hitter(s), LH reliever(s)might be available.

  50. S.A.-Let's Go Yankees! May 27th, 2008 at 1:55 pm

“The regulars here try to intimidate the newcomers with calling them trolls or ganging up on them. Makes people not want to post out if fear of getting name called”

I have to disagree. I’ve read this blog for a while and I just started posted on it this season. I have no fear.

However, if some people come here just to spew utter nonsense and posting stuff just to cause trouble, people will likely respond and it won’t be nice.

  51. V May 27th, 2008 at 1:57 pm

I am in favor of registration.

I truly believe that most of the comment issues stem from one or two trolls who use a variety of names.

  52. Mark Alan May 27th, 2008 at 1:58 pm

On May 27 of last year, the Yankees were 12 1/2 games behind the Boston juggernaut, who were winning almost 70% of their games. This was with both A-Rod and Posada having been healthy.

    They’re six out now.

It was one day at a time during last year’s come back, so what the heck.

(BTW, a year ago today, the Devil Rays were 13 1/2 back. I think the difference this year is the aggressive play of Elliot Johnson. Hardly.)

  53. randy l May 27th, 2008 at 1:59 pm

” Aggressive ignorance is a sad thing. But we’ll all try to do a better job of not feeding the trolls going forward.”

    murpheydog-

i agree with you and g.love, but one thing that happens on the blog is that sometimes commenters who are normally knowledgeable do go after each other in a less than respectful way.

for instance, you and i tend to have a different opinion about brian cashman, but we never butt heads on it in a disrespectful way. same thing withs sj44. we disagree with each other fequently, but it’s never disrespectful.

but there are those who i will butt heads at the drop of a hat. without naming names they know who they are. and they will go after what i say at the drop of hat in return. the problem with this is it probably does cross a line that encourages other people to be less civil.

the frequent commenters , myself included, could probably do a better job of disagreeing with those that we ,for whatever reason, don’t see eye to eye with. if enough people take the high road, then it sets an example for others to follow.

if it’s going to be an open forum, it’s important not to vent at an extreme level or go after someone simply because we don’t like them. for instance,i didn’t like what peter said about willie randolph’s comments about a double standard making more difficult for black managers in the future .

i could have come on strong and expressed my initial response to what he peter said, but out of respect for peter i toned it down. in retrospect, if i would have voiced my initial reaction, it would have been out of line.

my point is we need to temper our opinions because of the fact that this is peter’s newspaper’s blog with it’s standards. it’s not meant for us to just say what’s on our mind’s.

it’s better for us to have some self control and edit or censor ourselves instead of having it be done by peter , who doesn’t have time or someone else.

basically what i’m saying is that if we use the same level of civility for those we like when they disagree with us ,with those we don’t like that disagree with us, it would be better for the blog.

  54. Rishi May 27th, 2008 at 2:04 pm

Gayle – you have no idea how many times I type up a response only to delete it… :)

  55. pat May 27th, 2008 at 2:04 pm

A little civility goes a long way without stepping on anyones freedom of speech. Don’t agree with someone, feel free to disagree but how about using facts to back up claims instead of name calling and pure emotion. Think someones trade idea is not plausible, how about writing why it’s wrong, or suggesting another instead of trashing the poster. Sometimes it’s not what you say but how you say.

  56. Doreen May 27th, 2008 at 2:04 pm

The only newcomers who are regarded as trolls are those who come on board to insult in one way or another either the Yankees as a team, or the people who contribute here. There have been several newcomers who have seamlessly entered into the ebb and flow of this blog. All it takes is mutual respect. I can’t believe how difficult it is to ask people to refrain from namecalling.

And by insult, I don’t mean to disagree with, debate, or otherwise express frustration, as long as it’s civil. You can participate in intelligent discourse and disagree without being disagreeable.

There are a lot of people who come here to vent their frustration with this team this season. Most of us do so in way that allows us to get our beef off our chest without resorting to diatribes against the others here. There are times when I get incensed by what someone has posted here, and for the most part I’ll ignore. I’ve composed responses, read them, and then deleted them (seems getting it typed and yet not pressing the “send” button helps a lot), and a very, very few times I’ve given in to the urge to respond to something that has irked me.

Mostly, I find there is this thing called a scroll bar, and if after a word or two I find I’m not all that interested in a particular post, I simply scroll past. I find this takes almost no effort and I am able to keep an upbeat frame of mind.

Everyone approaches being a fan in a different way. My brother was as negative a fan as you’ll ever see – you’d wonder if he was getting any enjoyment out of a game at all. That was and is his way. I try to respect that aspect of some of the more reactionary posters. I prefer reactionary to negative because when the team you love loses a game you think they should have won, it is reasonable to be “negative” in your comments, reacting to the way a game has played out. SJ44 is reactionary in his in-game comments, but more thought-out in his day-to-day posts. There are those posters who can let a game go immediately and look forward to the next day, a/k/a the pinstripe glasses group. They’re also entitled to do that. There’s all kinds in between, and there’s room for all of us here. If a particular brand of fandom gets your goat, just scroll past.

Live and let live; post unto others as you would have others post unto you!

  57. RhapsodyInBlue May 27th, 2008 at 2:05 pm

It’s shocking to some to visit a public forum and find opinions that differ from their own.

    SJ44, keep it coming.

Do any of you people have jobs? or lives?

  60. Doreen May 27th, 2008 at 2:08 pm

Wow — Nice to know I’m not the only one who self-censors! :)

  61. Steph May 27th, 2008 at 2:10 pm

Well, a pitch or game can make or break a season if it’s the last game they’ll play. But otherwise you’re right.

And giving it back like a man is asking for a fight when someone talks back to you? Come on. Can’t you be a bigger man and walk away?

  62. Doreen May 27th, 2008 at 2:11 pm

    Rhapsody in Blue -

This is the only place where people don’t think you’re out of your mind for wanting to discuss the minutiae of all things Yankees, so I squeeze this into my life/job situation. (Plus I read and type really fast, so I’m not spending as much time here as one would think! And it takes 40 minutes for the laundry to finish. )

  63. Manton May 27th, 2008 at 2:12 pm

Uh oh, Pete wrote another “Commenting on the Comments” post. The season’s over for sure!

  64. RhapsodyInBlue May 27th, 2008 at 2:12 pm

Like going to a war and complaining about being shot at.

  65. DJ May 27th, 2008 at 2:13 pm

“I was stunned to read people threatening SJ to fist fights. Jesus, go somewhere else with that nonsense.”

    Just thought I’d point out…

If the discussion you’re referring to is the same one I read last night, the person in question only called SJ a ‘brainiac.’ It was SJ who first challenged the poster to a face-to-face confrontation. It then degenerated into a back-and-forth, but SJ made the original threat.

As Pete pointed out, many of the ‘regulars’ participate in the nastiness. Often, their nastiness is unprovoked. You can say they’re responding to ‘stupidity’ or ‘utter nonsense’ but I’ve seen terms like that attached to posts that merely expressed a different viewpoint. When the definition of ‘stupidity’ widens to include any disagreement, then the regulars can just flame whoever they want. V is a regular who does it all the time; over half his posts are calling someone who just expressed their honest opinion with no insults directed at anyone a ‘moron’ or an ‘imbecile.’ No one has a problem with it because he’s a ‘regular.’ But in my eyes his behavior is far more deplorable than some of the posters that I’ve seen labeled trolls and morons.

It’s just a little perspective. SJ brings intelligent insight to the blog, but his response to the ‘brainiac’ poster was over the top, as was the poster’s continuing the fight. Pete’s point is let’s -all- take responsibility for our poor behavior, make every effort to rise above it, and move on.

I am neither a fan of or a critic of any poster here (SJ44, murphydog, randy l, or anyone else), but I do respect their opinions (right or wrong) as they’re entitled to them. If I disagree, I post a rebuttle. As someone famous once said: “It’s about the Yankees stupid.”

  67. Hoosier Yankee May 27th, 2008 at 2:17 pm

A few thoughts, though I am a regular reader, I am not a regular poster.

While freedom of speech is guaranteed, it is silly that people post some things to tear down others.

On the flip side of that for those that are being called names, just like in elementary school, ignore it, you know who you are and you shouldn’t need bloggers to justify or tear down your belief in yourself.

BTW, IMO, the worst blog I have read regarding trolls mostly Mets, but some Red Sox fans), bullies, trash talkers, etc, has got to be the NY Daily News. I quit reading the articles just so i don’t have to read the top few blogs at the bottom (plus I think their journalists…not so good).

  68. Robert O"kelly May 27th, 2008 at 2:18 pm

There is nothing “manly” about talking trash on an internet message board.

Of course, talking trash and threatening fist-fights in person is more childish than manly, but doing so online…wow.

This is the best source of Yankee news around, mostly from Pete, and some from posters. I check the blog several times a day, and usually do a quick scan of comments for any new news or insight, for minor league info, and for the occasional good debate. It’s easy to skip the stupid comments, but annoying when they make up half the posts.

  69. RhapsodyInBlue May 27th, 2008 at 2:18 pm

I thought it was pretty funny, had a vision of the guy who threatened sj jumping into his car with mapquest directions in one hand wearing a disposable diaper so he wouldn’t need to stop, then his temper calming down 5 miles down the road.

  70. rconn23 May 27th, 2008 at 2:18 pm

People should have the right to write whatever they want on this blog as long as it’s a) not obscene or b)an attack on another person.

The fact that someone thinks that Shelly Duncan is not a
credible major league player or that Kyle Farnsworth is a gascan doesn’t make them a troll.

I’m relatively new to this blog, but I just don’t understand the personal attacks because someone has an opinion.

  71. 2008 Yankees May 27th, 2008 at 2:25 pm

That’s the last straw, Yankees below .500, Red Sox 10 games over .500, bloggers fighting, fans killing one another, cats and dogs living together! Where does it end??

There a lot to be said for being a Royals fan. Nobody expects anything from them. Doesn’t matter if they win or lose, they are just happy watching the games.

Here we are as Yankee fans and people are screaming about anything and everything. We’ve seen them in the playoffs every year since 1995 and people still find the need to B&M about the way the team plays in any given inning.

I watch the Yankees because it makes me happy. Obviously I am happier when they win but I certainly have been spoiled over the past 14 years to see such great players and teams to watch. AND, guess what? There are many more years of great players and teams to see. My life does not revolve about winning and losing, it revolves about me loving the game of baseball. No troll is going to change that. I ignore them and read on.

OK…I’m done ranting! Tonight’s final score Yankees 4-3.

  72. BobK55 May 27th, 2008 at 2:28 pm

When I turn on my computer in the morning this blog is the first site I go to for Yankees news. Always up to date news with humor thrown in for good measure. Thanks Pete for a job well done. PS:Pete, do you think there’s any chance of Dan Giese being called up as a long relief/spot starter?

Thanks Pete. I’ve been a long time reader and sometimes poster. I usually hang out on River Ave Blues but used to like coming over here. I appreciate your addressing the knuckleheads. I don’t always agree with you and I’ve taken you to task from time to time but I try to keep the comments meaningful and not just a bunch of F you Abe! remarks.

  75. LiveFromNewYork May 27th, 2008 at 2:32 pm

The biggest plague to Yankees baseball is the wave being done at the Stadium. That is just wrong.

  76. YanksFanLV May 27th, 2008 at 2:34 pm

I read Pete’s blog everyday (probably spend more time here than doing my actual job) but haven’t commented for awhile. I actually enjoy SJ’s posts, yeah sometimes i completely disagree but isn’t that what a blog is about? Its an open forum for discussion, people obviously aren’t always going to agree, so have a civilized discussion about something and realize the fact that people are going to disagree sometimes. Is it really that hard of a concept to figure out?

  79. murphydog May 27th, 2008 at 2:37 pm

    randy1:

I hear you. I agree that civility is a good thing and that we can disagree without being disagreeable.

Some of us are a little saltier than others in our give-and-take and for a sports blog aimed ostensibly at grown ups but read by all ages I’m not sure that’s so bad if kept within the rules. No cussing, of course. The acceptable use rules must be followed at a minimum and those are the terms of our agreement with our gracious host.

While I’m certainly not in favor of gratuitous attacks, I’d hate to lose the passion and vitality of the posts here. Testing the strength and weaknesses of various opinions is what the discussion is all about. Occasional elbows may be thrown, and offense may be occasionally intended and taken. But in general a clean game is usually played here. We need to remember to keep it that way.

  80. William Buckner May 27th, 2008 at 2:38 pm

For those interested in an aside from on line threats of violence. I saw McCutchen pitch on Saturday at WB/Scr. He gave up too many hits, but you can see the stuff is there. They stayed with him an inning too long and everyone’s favorite call up (myself included) Brett Gardner played a deep fly out into a triple.

After that Robertson came on in relief and he struggled a little, but he seems like a good pen arm. Kind of interesting how the Yankees farm developed pitchers so quickly but the position players lagged. I guess that’s what happens when two 1st rounders don’t pan out (Eric Duncan, CJ Henry).

  81. rb15 May 27th, 2008 at 2:39 pm

i think bashing on sj or any other commenter is really, really dumb. i come to this blog to share my opinions (not as much lately, unfortunately – work and wedding planning have taken over my life!) and test them out against others. if anybody here was truly informed enough that everyone else should defer to their opinion, chances are that person would have their own well-read yankees blog by now. nobody knows who anyone else is, or what their lives are behind the keyboard, so it’s probably best for us all to just suck it up and deal with each other’s opinions.

i was in toronto this weekend – it’s beautiful! drove right by the rogers centre, the first time i’ve ever seen a domed stadium. it was a nice-looking building, but to be honest, i prefer the wide open weather-dependent stadium in the bronx.

  82. The Zoo May 27th, 2008 at 2:40 pm

  83. Uh Oh May 27th, 2008 at 2:41 pm

I agree that stupid and insulting comments should be kept out of this forum. But, you can’t fault the occasional early season “it’s over” vent by a fan who’s frustrated at what’s going on. Come on, Pete. That’s germane to being a fan; it’s different being a neutral, objective writer who perhaps roots for a story but not a team. We fans need to vent every once in a while!

  84. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 11 ) May 27th, 2008 at 2:42 pm

WB I saw it too, but to be honest it’s Cutch’s first start in AAA and he said he is better than that, his delivery reminds me of Keith Foulke w/ his short arm motion. Gardner played that ball into a triple because he slipped on a wet spot in the OF, yeh it was weird to see him attempting a backwards catch.

while i agree with the spirit of what you say, i think the idea that “facts” rule can be a problem in itself. there are a lot of things that we know that aren’t facts. some things we know by experience. some things we know by intuition. facts are good but they are not the be all and end all to an issue.

  89. sunny615 May 27th, 2008 at 2:46 pm

With Cash’s philosophy of “picking the best player in the draft” whether that be position player or pitcher, has come back to bite a little as we have very few players who are ready to make a big league contributions. I’m glad we have all these arms coming up, but considering the age of our players, some of them are declining pretty rapidly, and the soon to be exodus of many of them after the 2008 and 2009 seasons, perhaps Cash should change philosophy to include needs as well as “best player available?”

  90. Ϛ.օ.Ϛ.ᇘ ❸ May 27th, 2008 at 2:47 pm

    Doreen,
I totally agree with your post. I for one am a reactionary poster. I cant stand some of the posters who think just because your ticked at the team or a player. That you are less of a fan than the ones who are always huncky dory. I cuss at the t.v. and at times it takes me a few hours to get over a loss. My point is some shouldnt come in here and rag on others for bashing a player. Or acting like they are the only true fans. Iv never booed a player. But i call it like i see it. Yes. I have short term memory. But all in all im loyal. I dont think im a bigger fan than all of you. I would appreciate the same in return.

SJ and others are who i call the all star posters. Iv learned alot from them and always appreciate their insite. Still think its the best blog around. Yes I feel like its one big happy family. O.k. for the most part.

Zach, Beltran last night w/ RISP as a #4 hitter executed a sac bunt for Delgado, it was not a good play at all, your batting cleanup for a reason, I understand if it’s for a gamewinning hit or something but to start a rally I chuckled, plus he played a routine flyball so horribly last night in an XBH hit clearing the bases…he disappears on the field at times, even went after a ball off the wall nonchalantly. He’s really rubbing Met fans the wrong way right now.

  93. William Buckner May 27th, 2008 at 2:50 pm

    Brandon,
were you there? didn’t really notice a wet spot? i thought it was more likely due to the wind or change over from grass to track. i agree on mccutchen delivery. very short and there seems like a small pause, very foulke like. regardless, i see what they like and i think when he starts using his off speed stuff more, he’ll be more successful.

  94. murphydog May 27th, 2008 at 2:50 pm

“perhaps Cash should change philosophy to include needs as well as “best player available?”

Can’t disagree, as the priority has changed from re-stocking the pitching to succession planning for position players. In the meantime, there’s always the possibility of using some overstocked young Yankee arms to get back an MLB ready (or almost ready) position player.

  95. Zach in Port Jeff (temporarily Zach in Melbourne, AUS) May 27th, 2008 at 2:50 pm

yeah…Beltran always plays WAAAY to deep. It should be the other way around. He should actually take a few steps in. If I was Pelfrey (or any other Met pitcher, except Heilman), I’d be pretty peeved with him.

  96. Yanksrule57 May 27th, 2008 at 2:52 pm

I would not be as good a destination if everyone agreed with each other.

While SJ is at times preachy, he is the best poster for Yankee minor league info and is many times a voice of reason. No one is perfect but much of the negative stuff amounts to nit-picking IMO.

Pete has a better blog because of his posts.

Blog registration is NOT a restriction on freedom of speech, and the Founding Fathers were only concerned about preventing the government from restricting speech.

What you’re really concerned about (IMO) is limiting the comment rate to this blog, which might occur with registration. That’s fine, and it’s your perogative, but don’t wrap yourself in the flag for refusing to take reasonable steps to make this blog more enjoyable for your commenters.

real truth to that. mccutchen horne and marquez are all in there mid twenties. those types need to be promoted or used as trade bait some time in the summer.

  101. TurnTwo May 27th, 2008 at 2:55 pm

For those interested, Scott Hatteberg was DFA’d to make way for Jay Bruce on the MLB roster.

proven vet with a high OBP rate, and can handle 1B without butchering the position.

he’s also another LH bat, which this team clearly has enough of already.

i would gather he’ll be playing the season out elsewhere, but a name to keep an eye on nonetheless.

  102. TKinDC May 27th, 2008 at 2:55 pm

    sunny -

I understand the point you are making with respect to the draft but I think baseball is dramatically different from the other major sports where the draft is hyped (basketball and football) because the odds of a pick making the bigs are relatively very high.

It is so much easier to trade for a need at the minor level or to move prospects around that the “best player on the board” strategy gives you a chance for something great to happen.

Add to that the flexibility of most position players (3 OF positions, 1B/DH, middle infielder) gives the big club the chance to accomodate a new talent when they are ready to make the move to the Yanks.

agree 1000% I was at Sunday’s game, and all of a sudden in a critical situation people started the wave. Alex was looking probably thinking what is wrong with these people.

  105. Kill-Schill(ing) May 27th, 2008 at 2:58 pm

The tenor of the conversation on this blog only seems to deteriorate, and the civility to evaporate, once the games’ begin.

I’ve refrained, mostly, from commenting during games as a consequence.

But I apologize if I’ve stooped to dignifying, and therefore contributing, to the stupidity by responding to it.

The occasional second Vodka, combined with a Yankees loss has been known to impair my judgment. It won’t happen again.

I’m hardly prepared to give up on the season. Still the Rays continuing success, the Jays recent streak, and the last place the Yankees can’t seem to escape certainly has begun to distress me, perhaps more so than last year when they were 21-29 after 50 games.

Their prospects look rosier this year, yet the competition in the AL East has improved dramatically.

After 51 games last year, the Yankees scored 268 runs, even with Abreu, Cano, and Damon mired in slumps.

This year, through 51 games, they’ve scored 223.

I’m know mathematician but could the presence or absence of A-Rod and Posada for 6 weeks and 3 weeks alone account for the disparity?

    I sure hope so.

Just enjoy the games and call me in July. I try not to worry too much until then.

Practicing the ignorance of trolls can be a trying venture but very attainable.
Disagreement is a common everyday thing and this site is no different but to hide behind a keyboard and using idiocy only demonstrates a lack of baseball knowledge combined with jealousy of factual posting.
What ever happened with agree to disagree with a little class ?

  112. Doreen May 27th, 2008 at 3:18 pm

I noticed the wave, too! And this time it was behind home plate!!!! Last time it seemed confined to the base sides of the stadium. I can’t remember ever – EVER – seeing the wave at the stadium, at least not in sections of the stadium that are in range of the television cameras. How can we put a stop to it?????!!!!!

I mean, we certainly can’t do anything about the 1B situation, but as fans, we should have something to say about/some control over what happens in the fan area of the stadium, right?

Gayle … The ball is always live except on a FOUL Ball not caught or out of play or after a HR or Ground rule double. It is also dead when an umpire removes a ball from the game. Runners & infielders can call time after a play providing all runners are stopped at a base. No time can be called if the runner still has a play.

by facts I wasn’t referring to stats. For example, if someone makes an error, say “defense like that is killing this team” rather than the generic response of “this team stinks”.

  117. miggs May 27th, 2008 at 3:33 pm

I think SJ44 knows a lot about the team. When I have a question he usually has the answer.

But yesterday was all on him. HE started the altercation. HE instigated and initiated the idea of a physical confronation. I was actually surprised that everything got that heated.

When I first started reading the blog, SJ44 rubbed me the wrong way because he acted like a “know it all”. I interpreted his matter-of-fact posts as arrogant. But he really does know what he’s talking about, I just think his manner doesn’t sit well with everyone.

But enough with this nonsense. No poster deserves to be the subject of a thread. How about we start talking about the team again huh?

  118. Jorge Steinbrenner, the long-lost third brother May 27th, 2008 at 3:52 pm

That was me, at the game, screaming “stop the wave” from row X in the tier reserve on Sunday. it happened EIGHT times and, let me tell you, even Section 39 was doing it.

I wish I could be more of a “regular” on here, but the blog does go a bit too fast for me most of the time. It’s at its best when the very knowledgable fans who do care get to express themselves (and, yes, that’s SJ, CB, MurphyDog, Rebecca, RayMagnetic, etc.) It’s at it’s worst when I wake up at 8:00 AM and read through trolls and “the sky is falling” posts taking up the entire overnight.

We could always bring up “registration” again, and I’d certainly be willing to become a registered member (do i keep the dumb name, though?), but i agree that it’s a bit too much sometimes around here.

  119. Kenneth Keith Kallenbach May 27th, 2008 at 3:52 pm

It’s strange, I guess because it’s a comment thread and is forever on the web this nonsense goes on.

I mean if I have a dozen people over to watch the game, everybody is commenting during the game, and believe it or not every comment is not ironclad, deep or committed for the test of time.
For example if Cano pops up on the first pitch with runners in scoring position, or Jetes hits into a DP, a normal comment might be something to the effect of “awww man Cano/Derek you SUUUUCK!” It’s just a reaction to the moment.

I don’t need one of my guests to run down Derek’s achievement resume to counter that he does not suuuck. It would be ridiculous to interrupt the game and party to argue such stuff.

But in a thread I guess people need validation and attention and treat it like it’s the national H.S. debate finals and get into nasty pissing contests.

If someone says something you disagree with don’t feel compelled to begin deliberations on how little you think of their comment. Just let it go. Add your opinion into the mix and discuss.

    P.S.-
This the best Yankee blog ever BTW hands down. Would it be appropriate to ask you guys what other yankee blogs are close in quality and content that you hit up for info and insight??

  120. murphydog May 27th, 2008 at 4:10 pm

Just a word more on SJ-gate or whatever…

Given my chosen profession, I think it’s unfair to pick out one act in a fight and say SJ overreacted and is solely to blame without considering what led up to it.

My recollection is that there had been a number of unrecognized names popping up (not saying they’re trolls necessarily, but…) that were being aggressive with him, so temperatures were rising prior to his ultimate suggestion to put up the dukes. And it’s not the first time SJ has taken a boatload of crap here from people who purposely goad him until he reacts or who don’t like the fact that he is more knowledgeable and shoots down their pet ideas to fix the Yankees.

Anyway… let’s go on from here in fraternity (and sorority), shall we?

  121. randy l May 27th, 2008 at 4:21 pm

“to hide behind a keyboard and using idiocy only demonstrates a lack of baseball knowledge combined with jealousy of factual posting.”

the above seems another example of using the terms “facts” and “knowledge” as though they are the same thing.

to me there is a distinction between facts and knowledge.
    from wikepedia:

“Knowledge is defined (Oxford English Dictionary) variously as (i) expertise, and skills acquired by a person through experience or education; the theoretical or practical understanding of a subject, (ii) what is known in a particular field or in total; facts and information or (iii) awareness or familiarity gained by experience of a fact or situation.”

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knowledge

on an extreme level, someone could be loaded with baseball facts, and not know much about the game. baseball knowledge really is more than just the facts.

  122. Steve's Subs May 27th, 2008 at 4:21 pm

Clare is correct, restricting comments on this blog is not a free speech issue in a Constitutional sense. The First Amendment prevents the government from restricting speech. The aforementioned Founding Fathers were concerned with protecting the individual and restraining the state. This blog is a private entity and the comment section can be handled in whatever manner the blog’s owner chooses. The existence of the FCC and McCain-Feingold are First Amendment issues. Pete controlling the content of this blog is not.

“2. If the Yankees give up a run or lose a game, please refrain from declaring the season is over. You just look stupid. Or did you forget what happened last year and the year before that and the year before that? One pitch or one game does not a season make. Just relax.”

Yeah… But aren’t the ‘knee-jerk-reaction’ fans fun to debate with? How many of them have been calling for Cano to be traded this last month? Or Giambi or Damon to be dfa’d?…

I’ll admit, I wanted at times this season I wanted Giambi sitting across the table from Tony Soprano in the final episode, if you know what I mean.

But, he’s pulling himself from his offensive slump.

Everyone is guilty of ‘knee-jerk-reaction’ sometimes. Last June, Pete Abe suggested the team drop certain players and begin the re-build. He even suggested trading Cano, if I remember.

Fun is fun, but don’t feed the trolls. If you ignore ‘em, they’ll go away.

What’s the point of engaging them? There is none.

Don’t even debate ‘em. If they like the Orioles, great. We like the Yankees. End of debate. Have a nice life!

And threatening anyone with violence over their comments is just … pathetic.

I don’t think recent trolls in here are innocent. Some of the trolls ARE intentional sabotage. Some even target regs to pick up a fight. Pete better watch out for it for a while. To help and not make things worst, it’s a must for regs not to repond to the trolls.
