Slump continues for Jeter

Peter Abraham
May
27

Derek Jeter is 1 for 21 over the last seven games, dropping his batting average from .314 to .282. He hit several balls hard on Monday but didn’t get anything to show for it.

Given the slump and how he’s been throwing the ball from shortstop the last few days, you have to wonder if he’s injured. His quad seems to have healed up. Maybe he has a shoulder issue or something. Something to keep an eye on.

Meanwhile, the Yankees will get lefty tonight in Brian Burres. That will be 17 lefty starters in a span of 29 games.

more importantly. i think girardi needs to realize that simply because duncan is a righty, that doesnt mean he has any other virtues.

  2. JoeT 28 in 09!!

I like the line-up with Duncan in it… gives it some more balance… a hell of a lot of energy, and a much better defensive glove at first base. With some consistent at-bats he’s going to start turning those hard foul balls into gapers and home runs.

I don’t think we need to address the Jeter slump issue – that’ll fix itself soon enough.

  3. JoeT 28 in 09!!

as long as he’s not injured **

  4. Osi

Maybe its the hand that got hit by a 90MPH fastball

  5. Wright Guy

Burress looks like Cy Young against the Yanks

  6. JoeyA

    1. Trade Jeter obviously…hey remember when he was 0-60. Oh the days.

    2. Duncan was AMAZING when teams didn’t know the guy from a whole in the wall. They soon realized he is the real-life version of Pedro Cerrano. Just don’t throw a fastball near the middle of the plate. BINGO. The guy needs to be sent down and taught how to make adjustments. Every at bat is the same… One or two hard hit foul balls, where people get the impression he will put those in play, followed by a swinging third strike on a breaking pitch.

    3. IPK/Cabrera/Gonzalez/Jackson or Gardner for Ichiro. The man is miserable in Seattle and would send so many balls over that short right field porch, it makes me smile how much fu it would be to watch him.

    4. Pete – What do you think about all these young pitching prospects? I mean a lot of talk will obviously occur in NY, but should I truly believe we have major-league ready pitchers in Melancon, Cox, Horne, and White? I’m hoping, what do you think?

  7. j xi3

I had good impression on Duncan. But it looks like he has trouble both at bat and in defence after he came back this time. What’s wrong with him, Pete.

  8. a-moose

    white sucks.

  9. montyplease

Jeets will be fine. Duncan needs to go down.

“IPK/Cabrera/Gonzalez/Jackson or Gardner for Ichiro. The man is miserable in Seattle and would send so many balls over that short right field porch, it makes me smile how much fu it would be to watch him.”

This is GENIUS another LEFTY that can’t hit LEFTIES ! :D
.265/.357/.367 this fits everything the Yankees need instead of seeing 17 LHP is 29 games stretch lets aim for 22 !

  11. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 11 )

question Ichiro OPS in MLB vs LHP is .711, Gardner in AAA is 1.123, Ichiro is 34 yrs. old, meanwhile Austin Jackson is 21 and Brett Gardner is 24…GENIUS !!! :D

  12. Steve

Brandon, you might want to look at multi-year splits before saying something as uniformed and patently ridiculous as “Ichiro can’t hit lefties”.

  13. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 11 )

ok Steve right now he can’t hit lefties is that better I checked I know he has before since 2003 but this isn’t the same Ichiro and he’s 34.

  14. CanIGetAMooseCall

Duncan is absolutely awful, and there never was a reason to believe otherwise. He’s a 28-year-old career minor leaguer with lots of holes in his swing and no defensive skills. Please stop dreaming and start looking at reality. He doesn’t belong on a major league roster.

  15. john

Pete, you think too much. Jete will be fine, not every slump is injury related.

  16. JoeyA

Ok guys, the Ichiro is clearly a stretch and just fun thinking. I think I’m just getting tired of watching Cabrera not hit consistently. Anybody have any insight into my #4 comment. What are our realistic expectations for those pitchers?

  17. MoBoy

How can Alberto Gonzalez and Chris Britton be sent down. But Shelly Duncan and LaTroy Hawkins stays on this roster.

  18. j xi3

CanIGetAMooseCall; Duncan is 74AB and .257 in 07′. That’s not great. But if you trash that kind of bat as it’s worthless, you will soon out of helping hands.

  19. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 11 )

“How can Alberto Gonzalez and Chris Britton be sent down. But Shelly Duncan and LaTroy Hawkins stays on this roster.”

Britton isn’t as good as people make him ouit to be a nd Gonzo needs consistant playing time, you risk his defense going cold and bat going cold when you keep him on the bench.

P.S. Wilson Betemit when we see him bat will now bat w/ glasses

    out to be and *

  21. YanksAngel

Anyone know when they’ll publish the 1st vote standings for the All-Star game? Cuirious to see how the boys are doing in the votes for the last All-Star game at YS.

  22. A-Rod the best

Yeah Jeter sucks what else is new.

  23. Julio Lugo is the worst SS in the AL

The old guard is growing old, slow, slump-prone. Only guys left on the Yanks who can call themselves “champions” are Jeter, Posada, Pettitte, Rivera. Oh yeah, and Johnny Damon.

  24. Fredo Corleone

“I like the line-up with Duncan in it… gives it some more balance… a hell of a lot of energy, and a much better defensive glove at first base”

The energy thing is a myth, but not nearly the myth that Duncan brings a much better glove at 1st base. He’s a butcher, plain and simple.

  25. melissa

I think that they should give Jete one day…find out if Betemit can contribute to the team…and if not find out what lefty reliever you can get for him.

And btw I think Duncan needs to be sent down. All you have to do is move the ball in or out to get him out.

  26. RER - 98

Over the next 6-8 weeks Brian Cashman has plenty of roster tweaking to do to put the Yankees in contender status.
Some will come with Melancon, Cox, Horne, and/or McCutchen/Robertson.
Any position player reserves may have to come as teams make decisions prior to the 7/31 deadline. Betemit, Ensberg, or Duncan are too unreliable to be counted on for the rest of this season.

  27. sunny615

I said it before and I’ll say it again. Jeter needs to sit. Betemit can pass as a sub for a week. And then when whatever the heck is ailing Jeter passes or heals, come on back. Stick Jeter on the DL if you have to, but he’s helping no one on this team by sucking it up and playing through whatever maladay or malaise is bothering him.

On the Duncan v Giambi debate, they both are heavy handed when it comes to the bag (altho I will give Duncan higher marks for at least being able to throw home without the ball having to bounce a couple of times – unlike Giambi). IMO, neither of them are real compelling solutions to 1B. But the Yanks are never going to eat $20 mil. Until Giambi actually eats Hank’s horse or something, we’re stuck with Giambi. For now, the Yanks have bigger concerns than just Giambi/Duncan, they need more consistent offense. How they get that is not my pervue. I would tho, give some serious thought to Ajax or Gardner (more Gardner than Ajax – altho a week or two shot wouldn’t hurt for a looksee). And see what a fundamental change in offensive philosophy will do for the offense…

  28. rover

Well of course Sui is the only one who remembered to bring his bat to work. figures

  29. jennifer

I think WIllie needs to take a page out of his book.

Dave Miley was as frustrated as I’ve ever seen a manager after today’s game. The Yankees made three errors this afternoon — two on costly pick-off moves — and lost 6-4, giving them eight losses in 12 games. Some of these loses have been ugly, with the team making mistakes in the field and struggling to get big hits with runners in scoring position.

“The only thing I’ve got is that there are going to be some changes, and you can let anybody know,” Miley said. “As soon as I know what they are, you’ll know.”

Miley wouldn’t say what kind of changes to expect, whether it would be as drastic as players being sent down to Double-A or as mild as a reshuffling of the lineup, but his tone suggested something significant. He was not pleased. Not pleased at all.

Looking for moves that could be made, it’s easier to find Double-A pitchers who have earned a promotion than it is to find Double-A position players. Austin Jackson, Edwar Gonzalez and Colin Curtis are each playing well, but is it really time to move them up? And where would they play in this crowded outfield? P.J. Pilittere has strong numbers behind the plate, but he wouldn’t be likely to play much after Chris Stewart gets healthy. As for the pitchers, that’s hardly been the Triple-A Yankees problem.

Maybe the changes will come internally, perhaps with Matt Carson getting more at-bats. And we already know to expect a player sent down from New York when Wilson Betemit is activated tomorrow (he said after the game that he’s heading to Baltimore tonight).

Whatever the moves, Miley isn’t happy. His team is struggling and seems hell bent on doing something about it.

darrel rasner’s success shows why a team should let mlb performance determine who pitches and who doesn’t.

it was a mistake to give hughes and kennedy 6 starts a piece despite a lack of results.

let results from the competition determine who pitches.

… and if rasner stops getting results, try someone else.

let pitching well determine who pitches.

it’s not patience when a pitcher gets hammered consistently. it’s just a bad plan.

when joba moves into the rotation, he needs to do well within three starts to stay in the rotation. if he doesn’t , someone else should get the opportunity to win.

baseball is a competition.doing well has to be the deciding factor and not wishful thinking .

  31. Julio Lugo is the worst SS in the AL

Giambi and Cano to Baltimore for Kevin Millar and Brian Roberts. Of course the yanks would have to pay about $19 million of Giambi’s $20 million stipend for hitting the occasional homer.

  32. sunny615

Pffft… Angelos is too much of a Roberts worshipper to ok that deal. He’s probably the worst owner in baseball.

  33. sunny615

(And this is besides the fact that Millar is on a total downward spiral)

  34. OldYanksFan

“Duncan… gives… a much better defensive glove at first base”
    ===========================================================
I disagree. Shelly throws much better. He also has slightly better range, as they both have little to none. Shelly can also jump better. However, the thing that 1Bman do many time a game is catch throws. I don’t think a game goes by where we don’t have at least 1 bad throw to 1B. Giambi is actually slightly above average at scooping the ball… far better then Duncan. They are both liabilities in the field, and will both make errors, but at least Giambi saves a few errors.

  35. Jerkface

Jeter is such a warrior. Clearly showing everything what being a LEADER means by playing immediately after taking a 90 mph fastball off the hands, surely impacting his ability to hold a bat, and consequently spiraling into an epic slump.

At least he has drawn 3 walks.

  36. TurnTwo

with arod back, and posada back maybe in 2 weeks, stay the course.

you’ve finally got some semblance of a regular lineup now, maybe just a little roster tweaking should do.

i would swap Shelley with Jason Lane on the major league roster, but leave the everyday lineup the same.

i would thank LaTroy for her service early this season to the cause of #27, and then trade him for a couple of low level prospects to the NL. Call up an arm, maybe Britton or Patterson.

i would not even think about touching JB Cox or Melancon yet, or calling up AJackson any time soon.

  37. TurnTwo

ha! oops… LaTroy for *his* service

  38. OldYanksFan

“Giambi and Cano to Baltimore for Kevin Millar and Brian Roberts. Of course the yanks would have to pay about $19 million of Giambi’s $20 million stipend for hitting the occasional homer.”
    ——————————————————
    God… this is soooooooooooo brilliant!
    1) Roberts is 5 years older then Cano
    2) In Roberts first 4 years, he averaged a .663 OPS and 4 HRs. Then, in 2005, he had a .903 OPS and 18 HRs. Any thoughts (PEDs)?
    3) Career OPS: Roberts, .761 … Cano, .814
    3) Career OPS: Millar, .825 … Giambi (as a YANKEE only), .930
    4) 2008 OPS so far: Millar, .684 …. Giambi, .894
    5) Roberts contracts is $7.2m per for 2 years. Cano’s contract is $7.5m per for 4 years with a team option for 2012 and 2013 at $7.5m per.

So, instead of paying Giambi $21m, you want to pay for Millar $22.8m ($19m + $3.8m)

Brilliant! Did you even look up a SINGLE statistic before making your post? Congratulations on an all-time stupid post!

  39. Dennis-Costanza(Sox fan)

Hope everyone had a good weekend.

I know this has been discussed in the past but I took a peek back at the win totals for the AL East champs and the WC win totals from 02-07. I believe the AL has improved remarkably in that time span especially the AL East in 2007-2008. I believe 90-92 wins will win the AL East and 88-90 will win the WC. Here are the numbers from the last 6 seasons. The numbers seem high when you look at the parody so far in 2008.

    Win totals
    2007 East- 96 WC-94
    2006 East- 97 WC- 95
    2005 East- 95 WC-95
    2004-East- 101 WC-98
    2003-East- 101 WC-95
    2002-East-103 WC-99

I believe The East and WC will be on average 5-7 wins below the average of the above numbers.

    Have a good week.

The ‘DFA Damon’ and ‘DFA Mussina’ and ‘DFA Giambi’ birds have a new scapegoat for Yankees losses – Duncan.

  41. Fran

I think that Derek’s hand is probably hurting more than he is letting on. But Derek does not complain – he just goes out and plays.

  42. V

Man, I took a look at that 8th inning for Felix vs. the Red Sox yesterday – ugly.

That manager and GM need to get fired, quickly. If they ruin Felix by overusing him this young…. what a waste of his talent.

  43. Julio Lugo is the worst SS in the AL

It makes soooo much sense to send the MANAGER packing when the PLAYERS are getting old and stale. Last time I looked the Dodgers were doing okay. Better than the Yankees and Mets anyway.

  44. Jerkface

Lugo is the Worst: You’re right, the Yankees definitely should not fire Girardi for the player’s underperformance. Unless you’re talking about Willie Randolph.

Hopefully either of them don’t get insulted by 8 million dollars and walk out of the job.

  45. OldYanksFan

“I think that Derek’s hand is probably hurting more than he is letting on. But Derek does not complain – he just goes out and plays.
    ———————————————————-
This is very true, but he is playing poorly. Aside from posting a BELOW league average OPS, he was actualy HOT for 2 – 1 week periods, and then terrible for the rest of the time. Aside from those 2 weeks, he has really hurt the team. One of the hot weeks is when he came back from the hammy injury. So SIT HIM DOWN for 4 days, let him rest and heal, and cross your fingers that he is NOT in serious decline.

  46. OldYanksFan

    Good post Dennis-Costanza(Sox fan).
I, and most of us, figured that Detroit and Cleveland would be the Yankees/Red Sox competition for the WC. While the Yanks are a game UNDER .500, Cleveland is 3 games under, and Detroit 9 games under.

Will TB, the White Sox and Oakland be the real contenders for the WC (or their divisions)? Hard to say. The AL is very upside down now… but even with slow starts, the best teams usually rise to the top.

If the Yanks win 90, I think we will be in the PS.

  47. Brian (Red Sox Fan)

V …. are you really surprised by the Mariner’s 8th inning against Boston? Did you see their 8th inning on Sunday against NY?

I just hope that the M’s keep it up for a few more days. There’s a reason that they have the worst record in the AL.

But they did give Felix two extra days rest (skipping the Yankees, to my dismay), so the manager probably figured he could avoid the bullpen for another inning.

  48. Julio Lugo is the worst SS in the AL

    Just for fun…
On any given day, you could field a decent team composed of players the Red Sox have traded or let go. A recent example:

    Johnny Damon, cf (Yankees)
    Orlando Cabrera, ss (White Sox)
    Carlos Pena, 1b (Rays)
    Kevin Millar, dh (Orioles)
    Eric Hinske, rf (Rays)
    Freddy Sanchez, 3b (Pirates)*
    Josh Bard, c (Padres)
Mark “Get Back” Loretta, 2b (Astros)
    Gabe Kapler, lf (Brewers)

    * Yes, I know he’s a second baseman, but he has played third, and the oft-injured Nomar is the only other option

    Starting pitcher: Derek Lowe (Dodgers)
Relievers: Alan Embree, Keith Foulke (A’s), Brandon Lyon (Diamondbacks), Chad Bradford (Orioles)

On the bench: Hanley Ramirez (Marlins), Edgar Renteria (Tigers), Kelly Shoppach (Indians), Jay Payton (Orioles)

    Pretty good team.

  49. Julio Lugo is the worst SS in the AL

JF, I was referring to Joe Torre, actually.

  50. Dennis-Costanza(Sox fan)

    OldYanksfan.

I agree. I think 90 wins gets the Yanks or Sox into the PS. I am not sure if the White Sox have staying power. (Please note that this is a biased comment as I loathe Hawk Harrelson and Ozzie Gullien) I am starting to believe in TB as Shileds,Kazmir,Jackson, Sonnastine are very, very solid.

Cleveland is 5 games under .500 and Carmona is out for a month. THey are lowest scoring team in the AL. I think Detroit will struggle to put a run together. I just do not see that starting staff doing very much. They wiil score runs in bunches but I do not see them climbing back into it with that staff.

I think one thing that we can all agree on is that the vaunted AL Central was way overated coming into 2008. They have one team over .500 and we are headed into June in the coming week.

STAT- Win differncial b/tween theh East and Central… East +11 thus far.

    -dennis

  51. Dennis-Costanza(Sox fan)

correction. KC is the lowest scoring team. Cleve is second to last. My bad.

    -dennis

  52. Fran

Old Yanks Fan – That would be up to Girardi to sit him down. You know that Derek would not sit out voluntarily.

  53. V

“V …. are you really surprised by the Mariner’s 8th inning against Boston? Did you see their 8th inning on Sunday against NY?”

Well, this wasn’t Arthur Rhodes the Red Sox pwned. It was Felix Hernandez.

An overused, obviously tiring, Felix Hernandez. :shakes:

The pitch counts he was throwing early this season were inexcusable. That manager needs to go.

  54. V

“I am starting to believe in TB as Shileds,Kazmir,Jackson, Sonnastine are very, very solid.”

Agreed. I had them at 87-90 wins before the season started (of course, I had the Yankees and Red Sox at ~95). The Rays are for real, and have the core of a team that could be in contention for at least half a decade.

  55. DontTradePhil!

Maybe Derek is just gettiog old, maybe Derek is a staue at shortstop, maybe Arod should have been the SS all along, maybe this maybe that, the reality is that this team as it has demonstrated for the last 4 years is just not that good and the Yankees publicity organ keeps us all narcotized all year long so we wont realize that we are no longer the premier power in baseball, nor the second or the third or the fourth, What a bleeding embarrasment the whole thing is
    :(

  56. Bryan

McLaren is an idiot… Hernandez was totally gased and should been taken out once a man got

I mean cuz it wasn’t like he missed his last start or anything because of a calf injury

Oh well I enjoyed watching Papelblown almost give the game away which would have happened if Jeremy Reed didn’t swing at ball 4 twice to lead off the inning

  57. Jerkface

    Lugo:

No kidding, I was being entirely sarcastic with you. Because what you said was stupid. Joe Torre was offered a contract and didn’t accept it. He was not kicked out.

  58. Dennis-Costanza(Sox fan)

    Bryan- Horrible AB by Reed.

I would be surprised if McLaren is around on 6/1. That team is lifeless and has no solid approach with AB’s. They were over hyped as well headed into the season.

    -dennis

  59. Bryan

I also laughed last night when the $36 million dollar short stop was removed for a defensive replacement in the 9th inning

    Good one Theo

  60. Brian (Red Sox Fan)

V …. I think Seattle stayed with Felix to avoid Arthur Rhodes (et al). Also, I’ll guarantee that they wanted to keep him eligible for a win (tie game).
Damned if you do, damned if you don’t.

  61. as2008

Yanks signed a MLB 1b/OF who played with Mariner/Rangers, to a minor league contract. They will be adding him today to the SWB roster. Can’t figure out who it is.

  62. Be Ge Burrs

Funny how many teams were being rated on how they did last year and so many of them are coming up short.

  63. TurnTwo

i laugh when blog board geeks question the moves of a GM whose team has won 2 world series in the past 5 years, and currently sits 10 games above .500.

  64. TurnTwo

    as2008, was it Ben Broussard?

  65. Jammer

Boston is the class of the Al and its not even close at this point. With or without Lugo playing 9 innings.

  66. Joe from Long Island

Broussard would be a good guess, I think. Miranda is on the DL, so Scranton needs someone. And who knows what happens from there.

  67. sunny615

Perhaps because that team has an offense that can score runs?

  68. PH

Jeter is getting old. It happens. Good thing we’ve devloped all these young position players, right??

  69. RustyJohn

    Duncan’s last few games…

    5-26: 0 for 4, 2 k’s, 3 LOB
    5-25: 0 for 3, 4 LOB
5-23: 1 for 4, HR on fastball over middle of plate, 3 RBI, 4 LOB
    5-22: 0 for 2, 1 K
    5-21: 1 for 5, 1 RBI, 1 K, 3 LOB
    5-20: 0 for 1, 1 LOB
    5-17: 0 for 1, 2 LOB
    5-15: 1 for 3, 1 LOB
    5-13: 0 for 1, 1 K, 1 LOB
    5-9: 1 for 5, 2 LOB

So in the past 2 1/2 weeks, Duncan is 4 for 29 (.137) with 21 men left on base and all of 4 RBI. This while Giambi has been hitting the cover off the ball. Can we dispense with the b.s., “Shelly brings energy” to the club crap? He could bring a nuclear power plant to the stadium every day, but the offense still needs to score runs. If you need energy, get a mascot.

  70. Lucky

Broussard, Ensberg, Lane great job Cashman getting some talent in here.

  71. DLev

Granted, Duncan never was going to be a star. But he shouldn’t be this bad. Looks to me as if the instant success at AAA this year made him think he was Babe Ruth, he started swinging for the fences every at bat, and forgot that what finally got him to the big leagues was more patience. Now when he gets an opportunity he’s too anxious to make up for all the at bats he’s failed. An occasional base hit to the opposite field wouldn’t be the worst thing, instead of another mammoth pop fly to left.

  72. sunny615

no offense or anything- but what other talent would you want Cashman to be getting? Last I checked, not a lot out there.

  73. Paulio

Duncan needs to get 400 at bats this yr to see if he is a legit player.

  74. Lucky

    sunny615 May 27th, 2008 at 10:37 am

no offense or anything- but what other talent would you want Cashman to be getting? Last I checked, not a lot out there.

He is a GM. It is his job to FIND TALENT. Not just now but back in November. The best he finds is Ensberg?

  75. sunny615

The only question mark I have with Duncan is whether or not consistent playing time is affecting his play. In AAA he was playing everyday all game. He’s obviously not a good bench player/pinch hitter. So what’s his worth if he hits only when he plays? There’s no position for him and DH is already filled with the only player hitting (Matsui).

  76. sunny615

so back in november – who would you want Cash to get?

  77. DLev

Isn’t “class of the league” usually reserved for the team with the best record? Not to mention the team with the best record against the toughest division in baseball? Unfortunately for Yankees and Red Sox fans, Tampa is the class of the league so far. And unless the Red Sox improve on their 8-11 record against the east pretty soon, it’s not even close.

  78. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 11 )

the only talent obtainable right now RHB wise is Brayan Pena who was DFA by the Braves because of the depth chart. The kid is 26 yrs. old a switch hitting catcher, his nickname in Cuba was the Cuban Ichiro, he can catch a bit , play COF and 1B.

  79. Fredo Corleone

“I also laughed last night when the $36 million dollar short stop was removed for a defensive replacement in the 9th inning

    Good one Theo”

Is it as funny as the Yankees pulling a $20M per year guy from 1st base for a defensive replacement……..and realizing they don’t have one????

    People in glass houses, dude.

  80. Patrick

On the bench: Hanley Ramirez (Marlins),

You would bench Ramirez? Really? You know he is the best offensive shortstop in the league right?

  81. sunny615

Let’s recall here – every GM in the biz was saying this was the drying market in a long time. With the influx of cash as well as revenue (Yankee) sharing, all the teams were locking up their young players. The only high profile players I remember were Santana (who scouts are now saying is requiring a lot more effort to achieve less results), Torii Hunter (OF we do not need), Andru Jones (who is sucking right now), and Miguel Cabrera (who wasn’t a 1bman when he was traded and is now a worse 1Bman than Giambi and required a kings ransom to get). So even these “must haves” weren’t so great and these were supposedly the best out there.

  82. Fredo Corleone

Appears Scott Hattiberg is on the cusp of being available. Sort of a Sean Casey type, who might work here. Sounds like the Reds may DFA him when Bruce gets called up. His being lefthanded is a problem, but he’s a nice OBP guy who could play 1st late in tight games.

  83. sunny615

the drying market == dryEST market

    sheesh

  84. Doreen

Forgive me for pointing this out to all of you who have such a better idea of what will work for the Yankees, but how many phone calls have you made to other GMs to see what’s available in trade? And on what terms?

The Yankees are not a perfect team, and I suggest that there are no perfect teams. Some teams this season are performing way better than projected; some not as well as projected. It’s certainly disappointing that the Yankees are not playing consistently well – or, rather, that they’re not hitting consistently well this season. Cashman knew that they needed some right-handed bats and tried to get some on the cheap (both in terms of money and years). Frankly, with the contracts he has to honor, there really was not too much he could do in the way of moving players, so all he could do was take a chance on some guys. Sometimes you strike gold, this time he did not.

I just get bent out of shape when it seems like it’s being suggested that not only is Cashman not doing his job, but that any number of people not currently employed in MLB could do it better.

  85. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 11 )

Fredo Hatteberg means nothing to us he’s a LHB something we don’t need, we need a RHB that can swing it vs LHP.

  86. raymagnetic ®™

“i laugh when blog board geeks question the moves of a GM whose team has won 2 world series in the past 5 years, and currently sits 10 games above .500.”

So because of this he’s beyond reproach? Every GM makes questionable moves sometimes teams when despite questionable moves.

  87. TurnTwo

ray, see Fredo at 10:44am. exactly.

  88. Bronx Bomber

Maybe it’s time to get Austin Jackson up here to light a fire under Melky….he’s not hitting in case anyone has not noticed.

  89. raymagnetic ®™

    “sometimes teams when”

should be sometimes teams win. Turntwo, I know Cashman has made questionable moves as well no GM is beyond reproach, Giambi on the team isn’t on Cashman however.

  90. Eric

“when joba moves into the rotation, he needs to do well within three starts to stay in the rotation. if he doesn’t , someone else should get the opportunity to win.”

You can’t possibly be serious. You’re willing to give the #1 or 2 pitching prospect in all of baseball, with probably top 3 stuff in all of baseball THREE chances in the starting rotation? After that I guess we should just give up and send him to the minor leagues, right? Talk about being impatient.

  91. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 11 )

Bronx Bomber I’d call up Edwar Gonzalez or Brett Gardner before before I call Austin, he needs this full year to develope.

    Welcome to Yankee fandom.

  94. Fredo Corleone

Agreed Brandon, but you what else the Yankees need? Someone on their bench who can hit. As it stands right now, the number of guys on the Yankees bench who can hit is ZERO.

But I agree, a righthanded bat would be nice. Not a lot out there right now. Juan Rivera??? Halos barely use him. Maybe a B/C minor leaguer gets him?

  95. V

I love it. This team wins 5 in a row. They lose one, and the sky is falling, and the team is full of scrubs.

Guess what, guys, no team in the majors is going to have better than a 60% winning percentage this year…

  96. Jammer

V is a Cards fan everyone. Who can’t see that or admit that Boston is the best team in the league. Which is sad.

  97. TurnTwo

ray, understandable. overall point being it just sounds sour to criticize a single flaw on Theo’s roster when you can look at anyone’s MLB roster and pick out the same thing.

and you could really look at Lugo and recognize the Saux knew what they were getting with Lugo, but hoped that the offense he provided would bring more value than the defensive liabilities he possesses takes away.

  98. DLev

Jackson isn’t coming up any time soon. He’s playing better, but there’s no way the Yankees are going to push him. Plus, any move like that would mean making space on the 40 man roster, and the Yankees are going to have enough trouble managing that in the next six weeks or so that they’re going to be unwilling to add young players who are bigger question marks than the people they’d be replacing.

  99. Ray

If Lugo is the Sox biggest problem this yr, they win 96 games. Easy.

  100. SJ44

If they sign Broussard, that may take them out of having interest in Hatteberg. Those are the kind of guys that are available right now.

Its worth taking a flyer on one of them even though they hit from the left side. Both are defensive upgrades from Giambi and its looking more and more like that is going to be a spot that’s needed on the roster.

If you keep Giambi at first, you need a backup first baseman who can play defense. Duncan is not that guy.

I could see them giving Jason Lane a shot and DFA’ing Ensberg.

Lane has an out clause on May 31. If he is not on the Yankees roster by then he could be a free agent.

With Betemit back, it makes Ensberg expendable.

Clearly, they are trying to get Duncan enough AB’s to get a real read as to whether or not he can help them this year.

At some point, he is either going to have to hit or he goes back to Scranton. He’s not going to getg 400 AB’s to show his wares. He’s going to have to get it done sooner rather than later.

Right now, as Turn Two said, they have to keep treading water until Posada is back in two weeks. If they are within 6 of a playoff spot at that time, they would actually be in better shape than they were a year ago at the same juncture of the season. Amazing when you think about it.

By Mid-Late June, you could have the full lineup back (something that has only been in place in full health for 4 games this year) and a rotation of Wang, Pettitte, Chamberlain, Rasner and Mussina.

I’ll take my chances with that lineup and see where it goes.

  101. V

“Agreed Brandon, but you what else the Yankees need? Someone on their bench who can hit. As it stands right now, the number of guys on the Yankees bench who can hit is ZERO.

    Unlikely.

You can’t play fantasy baseball here. “Hey, we’ll give you a bag of balls for a guy on your roster. You barely use him, and we could use him! Whaddya say?”

If they didn’t want him, he wouldn’t be there. Unless they’re actively trying to get rid of him, you have to give real value to get them to talk.

  102. Edels

The Rays will certainly win the East this year. And Santa Claus will be bringing my kids presents and the Tooth Fairy just left them money under their pillows.

really I see 2 scenerios maybe the Yankees reach out to the Nats for Aaron Boone

    vs LHP Boone .371/.450/.657

or Scenerio # 2 get Milwaukee on the phone and ask what are thier plans for Matt LaPorta, if not that check w/ other teams in the NL like SF a Dan Ortmeier. There has to be a team in the NL w/ a RH 1B that can swing and field.

I don’t know whether to laugh or cry.

  106. sunny615

Duncan is the real puzzle. I’m starting to think he needs regular playing time to get in his groove (as he did in AAA). But the way this team is stacked currently, he has no place on the team. He’s somebody’s regular DH, just not ours.

  107. V

“The Rays will certainly win the East this year. And Santa Claus will be bringing my kids presents and the Tooth Fairy just left them money under their pillows.”

I don’t think they’ll win the East, but I think they’ll give it a run. Carlos Pena is heating up. They’ve been amazing even with him batting .200.

Their pitching is for real, which is what makes them scary.

Brewers response: “Oh, I don’t know. What are your plans for Phil Hughes?”

    Like that Boone idea though.

  115. DLev

Duncan wasn’t in that terrific a groove at AAA. He had an amazing start, then tailed off rapidly before they called him back up. As I said, I think he started swinging for the fences every time up, then panicked when he started slumping in NY and had to swing for them even more when he kept missing. Maybe a few consistent AB’s would get him out of it, but as much as I’d like him to succeed, if he doesn’t do it pretty quick it makes more sense to try out Lane while Duncan tries to get his stroke back in Scranton.

  116. V

“You just called them better than the Red Sox, V the Cards Fan. Now you’re saying they won’t win the East?

    Stay consistent.”

As of today, they have the best record in baseball. Thus, they are the best in baseball.

I will ignore you from now on, troll. I will also ignore your five name changes in the next hour.

  117. Old Ranger

You got it right! I wish some of the posters would think about the season …as a whole, not as one game. There are thousands of players out there, we (as fans) don’t even know (never heard of) some of them…that’s the GMs’ job. He makes a lot of money doing his job, let’s let him do it…then we can criticise it all we wish. 27/08?

Too much hate for SJ44 in the last few days. He is probably the most informative poster ion this blog. I don’t post often but do read the comments often. When I do not have time to catch up on all the comments I search for “SJ44″ and read his comments. I know others have said that they do the same.

I disagree with some of what he says (about 30%). I realize that his posts tend to be repetitive at times. I realize that his opinions sometimes turn out to be wrong – he has acknowledged as much several times. But, he almost always states the reasoning behind what he says and usually elaborates if people ask him questions. That makes for an interesting read.

Thanks, SJ and do not let cheap shots get you down.

  135. SJ44

Duncan is not going to get 400 AB’s to prove what he can do.

Its not how the roster is setup.

Its the Catch-22 of being a reserve player. You need AB’s to show what you can do. But, if you struggle, you won’t get enough AB’s to show what you can do.

Its why its very few younger players are good reserves off the bench. They are used to playing everyday and its really tough to adjust to a part time role.

He probably has until Posada gets back to show signs that he can help them like he did last year.

If they don’t think he can, he will probably end up back in Scranton.

It may be unfair but, that’s baseball. Its not always fair. Especially when you play for a big market team.

Question is – where? The Yanks won’t pay Giambi $20 mil to sit. Matsui is our hottest bat and has already been shifted out of a position. There’s no way to get Duncan consistent AB’s. The only thing I can think of is to site Abreu during games with LHP and move Matsui to right, and DH Duncan. But then Abreu get’s squeezed. This team as currently constructed has no place…as far as I can see…??

As I keep saying, I’d love for Duncan to succeed. But I don’t see how keeping playing him well into September, which is what it would take to get him 400 AB, when he’s struggling this much, does him or the Yankees much good. I’d be happy to keep going with him to 5/31 when they’ll have to give Lane a shot if he’s going to get one, but if Duncan doesn’t show clear signs of producing by then, he’s better off back in the minors until he starts to hit again.

OK Enough with the ridiculous back and forth – now back to baseball.
I was able to watch the SWB Pawtucket game yesterday as it was televised in Boston. Steven white got hit hard (as did everyone on SWB not named Cox). Which is the point, JB looked very good. Came in with runners on first and second and promptly got a groundball to get out of the inning. Pitched a 1-2-3 inning next. Very poised, threw stikes and got outs. He did give up two fly ball outs. A couple more weeks of building strength and honing his command and up he goes to the big club. He can’t be worse in the get me a groundout role than Hawkins.
None of the hitters looked particularly good against Wakefield lite (Zink). Potential call-up Jason Lane did have a very nice double.

  155. SJ44

    Vince,

Why should I leave? Because folks decide to make it personal with me I should refrain from posting here?

    Not going to happen.

Like I said, if folks want to debate the opinions, I’m more than cool with it. If they want to make it personal, one would think that should be an off the blog endeavor.

I hardly think having opinions on the Yankees is “bringing it on myself”.

We just have several folks in here who love to play internet tough guy. When they get exposed, they change their blog names and come back with the same nonsense.

I’ve just decided to be more aggressive when they make it personal with me.

Having opinions shouldn’t preclude one from posting here. Making it personal, which I never do until its done to me, is what gets folks tossed from here. I don’t see Pete changing the rules in that respect.

How hard is it for you to understand? I could care less if my opinions get questioned. That’s what we do in here everyday.

Its when it turns into nonsensical namecalling is when it becomes a problem.

Its not just me. Brandon is going through the same nonsense today. Others here, like Randy, Trisha, Murph, all long time posters, have also had the same issues.

How hard is it to debate the post and not the poster? That’s all I am talking about.

I guess some folks think that if they keep doing it, I or the others will leave. Its not going to happen.

So, we are left with two alternatives. Debate the opinions without namecalling or just keep playing the namecalling game, bog down the blog, and eventually those folks will get tossed.

Let me try this again as it pertains to hawkins spitting the bit yesterday:

  192. mel

    Soooo. How ’bout them Yanks?

    Any real news?

Pete, I know you’re busy, but new threads really break up the skirmishes that break out in the schoolyard. It’s gotten really tedious here and it somehow started after Wang’s no-decision.

    mel,
I thought you were the recess monitor in here!

  195. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 11 )

Jason my problem w/ Jason Lane is he wouldn’t get fulltime and would be regulated to play the PH role vs LHP. He hasn’t shown enough for anyone to have confidence in him

vs LHP Jason Lane .195/.313/.512 an OPS of .825
behind the count .190/.200/.429 in 63 ABs

BTW Bill Hall might be on the market
vs LHP Bill Hall .409/.490/.705 and an OPS of 1.195 question is can he play 1B ?

  196. jason

I am not advocating Jason Lane, but as mentioned he has an out in three days. He lays many of the same potitions as Ensberg, is it worth a shot?

  197. mel

    ray,

I’d get fired for slapping the kids!

  198. S.A.-Let's Go Yankees!

So today we go against Brian Bures. Another LHP.
    Oh the Pain?

I just hope Kennedy can give us another solid start. We need ya to do well Mr. Kennedy! I’m rooting for ya. :)

  199. as2008

Lane is a fast ball hitter. Pitchers figure it out quickly, and then you have the same thing as Ensberg. Lane would be cheaper I think. But as PH I don’t think so, and defensively he isn’t that great either. He gets under the ball a lot. So there are a lot of popout’s/K’s. I don’t think he would be the answer. It seems like the Yanks have a lot of utility players that play many different positions. But none that excel in one certain role. Especially in AAA. No one really stands out, except Gardner’s speed.

  200. Zach in Port Jeff (temporarily Zach in Melbourne, AUS)

    Anyone with an informed opinion,

I’ve been slacking over the past few months and have not been able to keep track of any of the kids progress down on the farm…

Is there real probability that we will be able to see any combination of Melancon, Cox, or Horne before the September callups.

I’d love to see if any of them can give us some innings after the ASB.

…and does Bruney have a legitimate shot to come back this year?

  201. Bryan

I forgot that as fans we don’t know as much as General Managers… so we can’t question them

    my bad

    TurnTwo is morally above that

Giambi was also signed as a DH/1B with far superior offensive numbers than Lugo when he was signed in 2001.. not to mention the fact that a quality SS is way more important than a quality 1B

    Nice try though

  202. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 11 )

“I am not advocating Jason Lane, but as mentioned he has an out in three days. He lays many of the same potitions as Ensberg, is it worth a shot?”

the thing is giving him a ML contract would be the same thing we did w/ Ensberg and it hasn’t been working out that way. My thoughts Jason Lane isn’t going to make or break this lineup I wouldn’t do it. The reason I’d look into Hall is because they called Ben Brossard to platoon and Hall isn’t happy.

With the right-handed hitting Hall batting only .158 against right-handed pitchers, Branyan was called up from Class AAA Nashville over the weekend to provide a left-handed alternative. Yost told Hall it would not be a strict platoon because that would give Branyan most of the playing time.

“He’s very, very upset,” said Yost. “If he wasn’t, I don’t know if I’d want him on the team. I told him to keep his head up, keep working.”

  207. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 11 )

pat they are guessing again because going from 55 – 75 pitches signals atleast 4 – 5 IP and Joba would have to start to get that done.

  208. Julio Lugo is the worst SS in the AL

Nine reasons why Boston is the team to beat in the AL East:

    1. Eventually the Red Sox will win on the road.
    2. Okajima had five saves in ‘07 to back up Papelbon.
    3. The young starters are farther along than their NY counterparts.
    4. Colon can eat innings along with all those tacos.
    5. As bad as Lugo is, he hits ninth and they have Cora for late-inning defense.
    6. Slump or no, Manny Ramirez is still the best hitter in the league.
    7. The RS are base-stealing mainiacs!
    8. Craig Hansen will be back in the minors soon enough.
    9. Gagne and Tavarez are in Milwaukee.

  209. Bryan

They are the team to beat

So were the Patriots and how did that turn out?

    18-1

  210. TKinDC

    pat –

I think the logic is that with his next appearance being around 55 pitches, the appearance after that needs to be a start to make any logical sense.

BTW – Is anybody else sick and tired of spending the last 2-3 years without a LHRP? Watching the lefty bats of the O’s put a hurting on us yesterday was just incredibly frustrating.

Well, thanks anyway guys. Truthfully, most of us are not easily offended by detailed and strongly held views. In fact, we appreciate the time and attention guys like SJ go to when they post. SJ44,

When these conversations turn sour, you’re probably better off just disengaging from them. Don’t give the trolls life by feeding them. Returning aggression will only make it worse – you’d be better off just emailing Pete the handles and getting their IP’s banned.

  220. RustyJohn

First, I think everyone is surprised that the offense has been so unproductive- not expected with this line-up and, of course, injuries haven’t helped the cause.

With the team scoring a minimal amount of runs they have to address this DH/1B gap- Giambi has started hitting again and even with leftie/rightie match-ups I don’t see why he shouldn’t be left in. Is he going to hit worse that .150 against lefties?

With Posada coming back, that should help, but the team is just struggling with 1/3rd of the line-up (Duncan, catcher spot, Melky) not hitting and with Damon being as inconsistent as he’s been.

Broussard is not the answer- another left handed bat that plays first- he was a part-time player in Cleveland and Seattle and everyone said, “He needs to play full-time to get in a groove”. Texas gave him a shot and he stunk- he is another part-time/bench player.

Perhaps Cashman is waiting for Jorge to come back to see how the line-up produces having everyone in there for a bit and will then make adjustments.

  221. V

I would really be surprised to see Hall dealt easily, unhappy or not. He’s signed through 2010 and has been capable defensively everywhere they’ve asked him to move (3B, SS, 2B, OF).

I’d love to have him, especially if he’d be willing to be a strict platoon/defense guy.

  222. Big e

No one has a troll support group like sj. He has to be posting all this

  223. Glenn

In all respect, the Rays are having a nice season up to this point and much of it was predicted based on the moves they made last winter plus a rising farm system.
Hot having been through the rigors of a pennant push, they’ll likely slide back into the pack and learn from it.
What has to be bothersome to their owners is the lack of fan support. Looking at boxscores, they never sell out and average less than 18,000 fans per home game.

  224. Bryan

I thought I read somewhere that Girardi said he would remain in the pen and any pitches he didn’t get in during game action would be done in gamelike situations-throw 15 pitches, sit down, throw 15 more- until he was comfortably up to 100 pitches.

Part 2 was today, and I assume Part 3 tomorrow. Pretty cool to get such an in depth interview with a GM – and the fact that he basically point blank said that he didn’t think they were going to be good this year!

  227. SJ44

Re: Joba. I think it depends on a couple of things:

    1. How he feels/looks after his 55 pitch outing. If he comes out of it ok, and seems to be able to ramp up to 75 pretty quickly, he’s probably ready for the rotation.

    2. Kennedy. If he struggles, it would be easy to insert Joba into his spot in the rotation. If he builds off his last start tonight, and they feel he is about to start on a good role, it may extend Joba’s transition a little longer.

    Brandon,

I’d do a Hall for Betemit trade tomorrow. I’ve always liked Hall as a player. He can play multiple positions and I think his righty bat would be an asset off the bench to the Yankee lineup.

I also think he would thrive in a bigger market because he has a swagger about him that may not play well in Milwaukee.

Only thing is, he’s got to use the pink bat everyday. The guy is Babe Ruth every Mothers Day. Gotta keep the good mojo working if he came to NY.

  228. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 11 )

who said he’s the answer ? I said w/ Russell Brayan being called up for Mil, Bill Hall has not been happy over there and his clip vs LHP is very, very good

vs LHP Bill Hall .409/.490/.705 and an OPS of 1.195 question is can he play 1B ? Milwaukee told him he was platooned because they needed a LHB, Hall’s response was

“Going on the last four years, nothing makes any sense,” he said. “My understanding is we needed a left-handed bat in the lineup and I was the odd man out. Does that make any sense? We’ll see what happens the next couple of days.”

I doubt Jeter is injured. Even he can get in a slump from time to time, though it doesn’t happen quite as often as other players. I kept an eye on his throws from SS yesterday, and they looked better to me. Maybe not his best, but passable. Just because he’s not gunning routine grounders to 1B doesn’t mean he’s compensating for an injury.

I hope another lefty tonight doesn’t mean Shelley Duncan again. My patience has pretty much run out on him and Ensberg. I don’t care how intense he is or how much he cares. It doesn’t impress me that you chuck a bunch of equipment around every time you make an out when you’re batting like .150. He’s an all or nothing player with basically nothing. Send him back down to AAA, hope he continues to rake down there, and then trade him for a young prospect.

if i was a florida resident, i would be extremly concearned that the state and counties/cities are about to spend half a billion dollars to build 2 stadiums to house thier mlb teams.

the marlins and rays have the best records in baseball and currently sit 30th(marlins) and 28th (rays) in attendance.

meanwhile the state’s schools are rated about as low as thier team’s attendance.

despite the ray’s contention that ‘only’ $75M will be spent on the ray’s new home, analysts for the st pete times calculated it at more than half the total cost of the project.

in miami, where the fans have proven they wont come even to see a winning team, the #’s are even worse.

its (mostly) thier money, but i dont think id want to be making those investments myself.

  240. Bellair

  241. sunny615

lane, broussard, ensberg… none of them will be helpful. It’s like trying to fill a hole in the wall with silly putty, lotion, or soft soap.

I don’t know what the point of getting/debating these late inning replacements will be if Giambi (because of his $20 million albatross contract) and Matsui (because of his hot bat) will be playing if at all possible.

  242. murphydog

    ham fighter:

It’s a gamble. They are probably thinking that new stadiums mean construction jobs and a residual, trickle down, shot in the arm to the local economy, maybe in the form of restaurants or other team and game related development. But I agree with you at least as to the Marlin stadium deal. It’s going to be a disappointment in the long run, although it might be a real improvement in the immediate neighborhood.

But with winning baseball being played in Tampa these days, the Rays may make a go of their deal yet. Let the fans see if it stays good past the All Star Break and then let’s see the attendance numbers.

  243. Old Ranger

    Brandon…
Yes, but very good young arms are also very nice to have (Check,Rays). I would agree to trade for him but not those two, we need them. I do like LaPorta a lot though, go after him if possable. 27/08?

This idea that anyone posting anti-SJ is a troll and/or should be banned is ludicrous. Threatening posters with “big bad Pete” as the blog-police is childish and degrades this blog.

I have been a follower of Pete’s blog from the beginning. I have been aggravated by the pompous pontificating of SJ to a point where I commented negatively about it several times. Finding that I was not making any impact I took the advice of SJ and others to just ignore his posts. That has worked nicely until recent days. So much of this blog is wasted (notice correct spelling Brandon) first on sniping at SJ and then his rebuttals and his supporters sniping at the snipers that I am forced to read his post to find out what it was he said to upset the readership. So now I have to not only ignore his posts but every post that refers to him. This self-censorship cuts out most of the enjoyment of being here so I am taking a sabbatical. I’ll check back in later months or years to see if sanity has returned here. Bye bye!!
