The Joba-less bullpen let a game get away from the Yankees yesterday in Baltimore.

It certainly wasn’t the fault of Darrell Rasner. This notebook also has news on Joba, Jorge Posada, Wilson Betemit, Derek Jeter and Hideki Matsui.

We read the transactions every day. This player is coming and that one is going. What does that do to their lives? Brian Heyman has an interesting look behind the scenes.

Columnist Sam Borden writes that the Mets didn’t make a real decision yesterday regarding Willie Randolph.

After the big meeting, The Mets went out and lost again. Josh Thomson has that story.

Interesting behind the scenes article! :)

  2. S.A.-Let's Go Yankees!

It’s crazy for some in the minors. You don’t know what tomorrow will bring. Good article.

  3. Hideki Balboni

Rasner’s stats for the season: 25 innings, 19 hits, 5 runs, 1.80 ERA

Joba’s stats for the season: 22.1 innings, 15 hits, 6 runs, 2.42 ERA

  4. murphydog

    Great piece by Heyman.

There’s the lure of the big money, the bright lights, sure, but mostly it’s the love of the game that keeps you getting on the buses for the 5 hour ride to the next minor league game. If you don’t have that, you quit.

  5. Bellair

I hope we can do better on this thread than Aaron Boone

  6. ItalianGreco

    Betemit is Dominican.

  7. JRVJ

Abreu, Edwar, Veras, Cano and Cabrera are white? (granted, Mariano is more mestizo than black, but he’s not exactly Troy Donahue, you know….).

  8. j xi3

Common, don’t feed the trolls again in here.

if kat obrien is correct and the plan is to start joba after his next relief stint, i think they are rushing him WAY to fast into the rotation.

its one thing to say he threw 50 pitches, its a whole other thing for him to throw 50 pitches effectivly and that he has command of all 4 of his pitches. didnt see him throw much other than the fb/slider in his last appearance, id like to see them keep him to 45 pitches again and this time work on using his secondary pitches more often and effectivly, before moving on to a higher pitch count.

  10. Joe from Long Island

Nice articles by Brian Heyman and Sam Borden.

I think the Mets didn’t “fire” Willie because they don’t want to pay him while he’s not working for them. That and they may not know who they want to replace him, or that person is not currently available. Either way, poor form.

I’m really curious what moves Cash is contemplating. I know there’s no way of ever finding out, but I am curious as what’s going on, organizationally speaking.

  11. Hideki Balboni

The reason they’ll start Joba soon is because once you target a pitch count in the 50-70 pitch range, it’s hard to get that in relief, unless you’re going to pull the starter after four innings.

  12. Julio Lugo is the worst SS in the AL

The Yankees may look (and act) like Republicans, but they do better when a Democratic administration is in power.

    Championships/Presidents:

    GW Bush (GOP): None
    Clinton (Dem): ‘96, ‘98-2000
    GHW Bush (GOP): None
    Reagan (GOP): None
    Carter (Dem): ‘77, ‘78
    Ford (GOP): None
    Nixon (GOP): None
    Johnson (Dem): None
    Kennedy (Dem): ‘61, ‘62

You have to go all the way back to Eisenhower for the last time (1958) the Yankees won the WS with a GOP president in office.

  13. Felix

    cool team…clean shaved…
giambi has a dirty big ole mustache and the rest of that other stuff you mention, well like I said: CLOWN

  14. ham fighter

i understand that its hard to relieve with that many pitches, but its also possible for him to throw an extra 20 pitches in the bp after he finishes. also, i think they shouldnt be increasing his # of pitches each outing, i think they should have him pitch at least twice (and effectivly) at each level befor they move him to the next level.

if kat is right, he will be throwing 60 pitches for the first time in almost a year in his first mlb start. also as said above, he barely threw anything besides the fb/slider in his last outing, so he’s headed for the rotation w/o any real reliance on his secondary pitches prior to his 1st start.

IMO it sounds like they’re setting him up to fail if that report is true.

  15. Old Ranger

    Brandon…
Yes LaPorta is very good, but very good young arms are also very nice to have (Check,Rays). I would agree to trade for him but not those two, we need them. I do like LaPorta a lot though, go after him if possable. 27/08?

  16. murphydog

Julio Lugo is the worst SS in the AL:

“The Yankees may look (and act) like Republicans”

Mmmmm. With players from Taiwan, the Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Miami and even, gasp, California, I’m not getting the same strong GOP vibe you are.

But that is a strong statistical correlation. If at all possible it looks like drafting Bill Clinton to run is the only way to have a shot at the WS this year.

  17. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 11 )

    “Brandon…

The guys I put are expendable I mean Ohly/McCutchen I’d rather trade them before Horne or Hughes, Ohly and Cutch are expendable because of Robertson, Cox and Melancon, Cutch at best is a # 3 SP we have alot of options like that, heck even better. IDK for LaPorta I wouldn’t blink if Ohly and Cutch lands me a Matt LaPorta as long as that deal doesn’t include Jackson or Tabata I’m fine w/ it.

  18. ham fighter

we already know from ST that cano is a subversive follower of che guevarra.

    …or just a guy with a cool T-shirt!

  19. Julio Lugo is the worst SS in the AL

    murphydog,

When the 2008 WS rolls around, we’ll still have a Republican in the White House. Unless we can impeach Bush AND CHeney before then and get Nancy Pelosi in there. But 2009 looks promising.

  20. Old Ranger

    Brandon…
I admit, it is hard to argue with your trades, but we need more than 3/4 very good RP in the BP. We do have Horne, Dellin, Kontos, Robertson etc., in the lower levels. Pitching is the name of the game, but with a plethora of pitchers, I believe Cash could work something out…if he where available. It would be better than Tex. 27/08?

  21. Buck Foston

Pete: Is it really necessary to conjure up Joba controversy? Isn’t there enough to go around already? I mean, these statements are very close to sensationalist journalism on you part:

“The Joba-less bullpen let a game get away from the Yankees yesterday in Baltimore.”

“The Yankees were trailing by one run going into the bottom of the seventh inning at Camden Yards yesterday afternoon, the outcome still in doubt. Joba Chamberlain might have been Joe Girardi’s choice to come into such a game a week ago.”

The fact is, Joba’s made 19 appearances so far this year, and he’s yet to come into a game in the 7th inning and the team behind on the scoreboard. C’mon now, you can do better than that.

  22. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 11 )

Old Ranger don’t forget we have Humberto Sanchez and a few others like Kevin Whelan, Anthony Claggett, Stephen Jackson and a few more who can step in for those guys if they are traded.

  23. Girardi on the DL

Real brain trust going on when we think that who is President has anything to do with the Yankees in the World Series.

  24. Old Ranger

    Brandon…
Granted, I just think Ohly and Mc can be very good pitchers. Not that the others can’t, I really like Robertson and Horne, I’ve seen those guys pitch…haven’t seen Claggett yet. Is he as good as the stats? I know they have been grooming Whelan as a BP guy, he was in Collage. 27/08?

  25. Old Ranger

Forgot about Humberto, never saw him pitch, but the word is; he is really nasty. 27/08?

  26. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 11 )

Claggett is a weird on, IDK who he reminds me of

he gets alot of groundouts when he is on his game Claggett

  27. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 11 )

“Forgot about Humberto, never saw him pitch, but the word is; he is really nasty. 27/08?”

he has the stuff to be a starter or closer, nasty curveball, his fastball topped out at 95 pre TJS surgery and that was w/ him holding back rumor has it he can dial it up 3 or 4 more mph, he debuts June 10th for GCL Yanks.

27/08 if Hughes returns as Phil Phranchise and Melancon & Gardner are for real I wouldn’t bet the house but I’d book a flight to Vegas.

  28. Ϛ.օ.Ϛ.ᇘ ❸

2 things. I dont know if anyone discussed this yet or not. But what are your thoughts on renting Sheets for the second half of the year? It seems like the Brewers might look to move him. This offcoarse if we dont have to give up noone big.

Last but not least. Just wanted to show off my new look name. Thoughts?

  29. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 11 )

that’s the thing Mil wants A prospects for him, his contract is done after this year and has a big injury risk sign on him. I really doubt it.

  30. Old Ranger

    Sheets, Uh, not thanks.
Good, when not hurt, but always seems to miss games. We would have to give up to much to get him anyway. 27/08?

  31. Rico

How long must Willie twist in the wind before looking in the mirror at himself and cut ties wirh the Mets which is what he should honorably do ?
All the Wilpons are doing is showing that they’re bigger cowards than people knew they were already.
An excellent article by Sam Borden.
