Don’t give up so fast, Cash

This from ESPN.com’s Jayson Stark:

Kei Igawa isn’t quite as buried on that Yankees’ depth chart as Carl Pavano, but it’s close. And he’s already homesick. We’ve heard from two different baseball men recently that Igawa asked the Yankees over the winter if there was any way he could return to Japan. The Yankees quietly explored their options, got nowhere and gave up. They’re still on the hook for nearly $11 million to Igawa through the 2010 season.

Does anybody get else get the feeling that the GM of the Hanshin Tigers must look at the AAA boxscores every five days and laugh hysterically? They got $26 million for that guy.

————

Meanwhile, we here at the LoHud Yankees Blog would like to welcome Lace and Stiletto. They’re the two, um, nightclubs that purchased an ad on the blog. It’s going to run through the weekend, I’m told.

Unfortunately, I’ll be in Minnesota and will miss “Bikes and Babes Sunday.” Plus my Harley is in the shop. But have a good time.

Maybe this will dissuade other Japanese pitchers from putting their services up for auction when they’re not 100% committed to the change.

  2. Joe from Long Island

    Pete –

This is priceless – both parts of your post. It’s for commentary like this that I keep coming back here. Oh, the Yankees analysis, too!

  3. x23

What the hell was cashman thinking anyway?? I bet the next highest bid was like 5 million and cashman gave them 26 mill!

  4. Real World

Jesse Jane Pete? Mama mia! This blog gets better and better everyday! :)

Igawa probably would be a servicable starter in the NL. I could see him in a pitchers park like San Diego, and doing pretty well. I’d guess that SD would take a flyer on him, if it were cheap. He’s clearly not going to cut it with the Yankees.

As for the Torre/Girardi look a like contest, I think they’re similar, but not the same. Girardi is dealing with a transition year, and team. The early struggles have probably prevented him from doing the things he’d like to. He doesn’t have the leesh that an established Torre had. Were the Yanks 5 games over .500, as opposed to recently being 5 games under, I think his options would be more liberal. At this point, he has to play for wins, and really can’t take any chances. Also, when you’re team is getting clobbered in 3/5’s of your rotations starts, it’s hard to run into outs on the bases. When you’ve got critical hitters on the DL, you’re not going to risk injury to older players, in a thin line-up. Girardi has made some questionable decisions, but I think he’s had his hands tied a little bit. Don’t forget that Bruney & Albahadajo are hurt, and he was using them regularly.

  5. AlexCT

while there is plenty to laugh about, the AAA box scores havent been that terrible. its the majors that he can’t hack it in. something tells me its not a mechanics problem that can be fixed, its just the way he pitches. in japan, hitters must be more apt to chase high fastballs where here they will sit on them or knock them out. the igawa experiment is over. i’d send him back just for the 40 man spot.

  6. Real World

The Mets bid $15 million for Igawa.

  7. TFC

why cash reject patres’s. offer last year?

  8. Why does this blog hate me?

Pete: I’ve got no problem with the nightclub ads, but mayhaps a little something for the women of the blog that prefer the opposite sex? ;)

  9. Jerkface

TFC: Because it might have been a bad offer, and he could have had hope that Igawa would turn it around.

Although its obvious now that his heart just isn’t in being a good MLB player. He isn’t lacking for ’stuff’, but he certainly lacks motivation and the ability to keep his pitches down.

    post of the week.

  12. Doreen

Since I spend very little time at the top of a post, I don’t really notice the ads, that is UNTIL someone else points them out!

I’ll never undestand the attraction of these “clubs.” All I can ever think about are that these girls at these clubs are someone’s daughter/sister/aunt/cousin/mother, even. I think about how awful it is that these women can make more money pandering to the lascivious tastes of nefarious men than by doing other work.

Anyway, the ads don’t bother me as much as the juvenile comments about these types of clubs sparked by these ads and by trips to Tampa.

  13. Juggy

I like Jessie Jane.. She has the mouth of a trout.

  14. S.o.S.27

“two different baseball men recently that Igawa asked the Yankees over the winter if there was any way he could return to Japan.”

Yes. But only if you take Pavano with you.

  15. S.o.S.27

“They’re the two, um, nightclubs that purchased an ad on the blog. It’s going to run through the weekend, I’m told.”

Does that mean that we can use F-BOMBS and all the bad/dirty words we can conjur up this weekend? Cant wait!!

  16. Lambchop Louie

When Kei Igawa goes to Beni Hana’s they tell him there’s a 2-hour wait when there’s an empty restaurant.

  17. S.A.-Just win games

    Igawa. Ugh.

    Let’s go Dodgers tonight!

  18. mel

    SoS,

I already busted out “dry hump”. It felt dirty, but it was for a good cause.

Joe Torre on now, answering question on the Mets and the Yankees. I like Girardi, but I’ll always have a soft spot for Mr. T.

  19. Patrick Bateman

Looks like Lace is after Arod and Giambi by advertising here.

  20. mel

    Lambchop,

Like Elaine at the Chinese restaurant on Seinfeld?

  21. S.o.S.27

“Looks like Lace is after Arod and Giambi by advertising here.”

Didnt/Wasnt Giambi going to model a g string underwear add. God i hope he doesnt buy an add here.

    lol. mel

  22. Wang IS Taiwan

Pete, you keep telling us this is a “family-type blog,” so what are those stripper ads doing on it? You can’t have it both ways, you know.

(Yes, I know it was a management decision, but geez, it smells of $).

  23. S.A.-Just win games

“Didnt/Wasnt Giambi going to model a g string underwear add.”

I just formed a mental image in my head of Giambi in a g string. The image is a little disturbing…
    I might have nightmares… :P

  24. Mike

    Wang IS Taiwan:

If you’re worried about questionable ads, check out add-art.org. I haven’t seen a web ad in ages, and instead I get to see interesting artwork in the spots where the ads would be.

  25. S.o.S.27

Just think of it as a Sumo wrestler goint back home after a hard days work and getting into something more confortable. Man. I made it worse didnt i?

  26. Winfield killed my seagull

what a great ad. love the way that little doll dances on my screen:)

  27. mel

    SA-

It’s burned an imprint on my brain. Right next to Colon the Clown, Damon doing naked pullups, and the abscess in Roger Clemens’s rump.

  28. S.A.-Just win games

The mental image is now worse. lol

  29. mel

What’s grosser than gross? Hearing that Jeter wore the thing during his slump. Please, please tell me that it was a different one.

  30. S.A.-Just win games

    Hahaha
The abscess in Roger Clemen’s tookus. Blech!
    Oh the pain

  31. S.A.-Just win games

It might just be me, but I have a feeling no one washed that thong while they were passing it around. :|

  32. BBFan

    Very well said.
It is sruprising that Peter and others can not see this realistic picture.

As some one said in the earlier thread, wait until end of the season before judging JoeG. Just like Yanks are not out of it after 1/4 th season, you can not say JoeG is same as JoeT after 1/4th season, given all the adeersity he had to deal with given all the injuries. He already proved he distributes workload in the bullpen much better than JoeT ever did!

  33. Wendy M

    Stripper ads. Stay classy, Pete.

  34. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

Mccuthen is pitching tonight for the AAA Yanks

  35. Igawa's buck teeth

Let him go back…Im sure they miss you over in Japan…you know what they say we love you long time!

  36. mel

    BBFan,

Reporter asked Torre about the Yankees record. He said of course it’s understandable, they’re had some key injuries. Looked like he was going to tell the guy, “Duh”, but I guess he didn’t want to hurt his feelings. haha.

  37. Travis

Does anyone know who is scheduled to pitch for the SWB tomorrow in Rochester? I’d like to catch a game here in upstate this weekend. I was hoping to maybe see Horne if he came back this weekend.

  38. EricNS

Tell Igawa to give up the rest of the his millions or keep quiet -

  39. Igawa's buck teeth

I dont care what kind of ads are on the blog as long as I dont have to see that ad of Eli Manning holding a puppy. Nightclubs > Eli….Oh yea and go GIANTS!!!

  40. michael

lace and stiletto. lol. pete, this is no longer a family blog!

  41. Igawa's buck teeth

has anyone seen the new youtube video of Dave Price? Its on the Yahoo Fantasy page…The kid is nasty…here come the Rays.

  42. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

Speaking of Dodgers, my friend invited me to the Mets Dodgers game tomorrow…totally didn’t realize that it means seeing Joe Torre in something other than pinstripes until about ten minutes ago (mostly because she told me they were playing Arizona and I hadn’t checked the schedule)

So yeah. Um. It’s going to be a little weird.

  43. TKinDC

Does the introduction of Lace and Stiletto mean that I can start telling all the %^&^$%&#$^’s on this blog what @$#%@#$%ing #$@%@#$%ons they are?

    No?

alas. Maybe I should move to Amsterdam after all. :)

  44. Fredo Corleone

“Mccuthen is pitching tonight for the AAA Yanks”

Little iffy so far. 3-1 Pawtucket in 3rd. He’s allowed a couple long ones.

  45. Old Ranger

Sorry to break up the fun you all are haveing, but back to baseball.
Brett Gardner is at .284 avg., .406 OBP., .444 SLG., and OPS of .850. Nice to see him proving himself, down on the farm. I would suggest Melky better start lighting it up right soon. Melky is not hitting well at all, mostly from the right side. If he can’t hit from the right, why not bring up a left handed hitter…Brett? They would get speed, good defence (not as good an arm), good plate discipline and he would get some big league experience.

  46. Lee van Cleef

are people really serious about complaining about the ad?!

You see and hear worse going to a saturday afternoon game for chrissakes.

    Why is it Pete’s problem?
I could understand if it was the adultfriendfinder ads, those are nsfw, but this ad is exactly what the NY post has in the sports pages.

Peter doesn’t need this silliness, we need him getting scoops and continuing the excellence.

  47. MoBoy

Brett Gardner and Mccuthen.People actually think in 2 years that the the whole team will be all players from our farm.

    It’s good to dream.

  48. Brad

any chance that this blog can remain family oriented for those yankee fans out there that would prefer to avoid images like that? free enterprise, but I would appreciate not having those ads in my face.

  49. Nick in SF

People, why is it so hard to understand? First comes the porn ’stache, then come the ads.

MoBoy, you are one funny dude. Thanks for coming out.

  50. csano

Can Igawa back out of his contract? Would the MLBPA allow that?

  51. gayle

Back out of his contract that would be the honorable thing to do in the customary Japanese way.

  52. PreteFunkEra

    About those ads….

Who links to a PDF after you click on an ad?

Take it from someone in marketing, I assume that was a non negotiable LoHud demand to do the advertising.

PDF’s are known to slow down browsers when your not expecting them. Especially if the PDF is 1.5 megs.

  53. Zooboy

Are Lace and Stilleto going to replace Mystique and Aura at the new stadium? (I think one of them may have briefly dated Carl Pavano.)

  54. iYankees

Haha, I’ve been to Stilettos, but never to Lace. Good ol’ Patterson Plank Rd. if my recollection is accurate.

  55. BBP

The $26M had been paid already with no return, NYY still has to pay him $4M annually, we can’t just leave him in AAA without doing something. Can Igawa possibly be traded back to Japan? Maybe some Japanese baseball clubs would welcome his returning, certainly he must give up the rest of the deal with Yankees before hand if he really wish to get back to Japan.

  56. bigjf

Is it really that difficult to send Igawa back if he wants to leave? Just forfeit the rest of the money in your contract, leave without saying a word, and we’ll never mention this again.

  57. jimmy1138

“Does anybody get else get the feeling that the GM of the Hanshin Tigers must look at the AAA boxscores every five days and laugh hysterically?”

Quotes (about Igawa) from the last game against Pawtucket which tore apart both Giese and McCutchen:

“He looked good,” said PawSox manager Ron Johnson. “He was really good. He threw strikes with all his pitches and got ahead. We really didn’t do a lot.”

“He was outstanding,” manager Dave Miley said. “That’s a good-hitting ball club that he just threw against.”
“I would have to say this was the sharpest he’s been,” Miley said. “The one home run he allowed (a solo shot by Chris Carter in the sixth), he left the ball over the plate but that’s going to happen.
“For the most part, he kept the ball down in the zone and that’s been kind of a problem for him. When he pitches up in the zone he gets hurt. Tonight, he was down with a lot of pitches and he used all of his pitches. He was solid.”
