Even Giambi throws better than that

In case you missed this, Mariah Carey was in Japan and threw out the first pitch at a game there.

It’s hard to describe. Just watch the video. It would seem the Captain never worked with her on throwing.

That will conclude the day’s blogging. I’ll check back in from Minnesota tomorrow.

  1. Laura - Wishing she was Jeter's wife!

I can see why Jeter dumped her. That and the fact that she’s a total whack job. Went nuts a few years ago and still hasn’t recovered IMO. It’s sad because she’s got one hell of a voice.

  2. Pauly O

i wonder if he worked with her on catching

  3. Ben

    Oh man…that is brutal.

    She throws like a girl.

So who would have the better arm in Center? Carey or Damon?

  4. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

    That was pathetic.

  5. Steph

Oh dear. She throws worse than she sounds. And dresses, for that matter. Who wears foot-high heels to throw out the first pitch?

  6. Nancy Drew boy

Zach McCallister promoted to TAMPA baby!?
Cashman said he and Betances would staty @ Charlston all year but cant stop him now

  8. josh

almost as bad as the cinci mayor

  9. Darkstrand

were those mascots there to help her walk out to the mound?

  10. MikeyJ

“I can see why Jeter dumped her.”

Yup! Word on the street has it that she got clingy and weird and Jetes couldn’t take it anymore.

Its a shame that her selling point is now sex tease and not her talent, amazing singer.

  11. S.A.-Just win games

    Dear Mariah,

    Stop dressing like a Hooker.

  12. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 12 )

bringing back baseball to this blog Abe Almonte homers in his first game back :D

  13. murphydog

    Jeter and Mariah?

Love is like baseball. It’s OK to make mistakes; it’s part of the game. But you’ll never get to The Show if you keep making the same mistakes. Based on how he has conducted himself since the Mariah days, I think it’s fair to say Jetes has put up HOF numbers on the field – and off.

Hey, she wouldn’t have been happy sitting with the Yankee wives anyway.

  14. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

Joe–from the last thread–Italy was wonderful, but alas, now I’m battling to stay awake, and it’s a losing fight!

  15. JeterMack Clutch

i bet she is a good catcher! whammy!

  16. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 12 )

:waiting for a new post to talk baseball:

Baisley keeps on hitting, Edwar Gonzalez another double, Colin Curtis w/ a HR…Jose Tabata benched for not backing up a passed ball on a dive Austin took in the OF. The Yankees might need to bring Bernie Williams for this kid, he needs someone that can communicate w/ him. Ala Reggie Jackson to Austin.

  17. RobC

    What a sick disgusting video.

He is already out of the game?

  20. Joe from Long Island

Rebecca – Where did you visit? We went to Florence, then Rome. Preferred Florence.

    Rebecca.

I sent my tickets to your friends in Boston as promised and they should have received them last Friday. Please confirm.

  22. jason

Nice job Heredia in his second outing back. HR for Almonte. 2B for Montero. Kontos a very good start.
What was the deal with Mcutcheon throwing behind a hitter?
We need to get Tabata’s head on straight. I asked this awhile back, when Cervelli gets back (which I would imagine should be soon) can he take Tabata under his wing. He is supposed to be an outstanding leader and works well with the Latin American kids. Like a big brother.

  23. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

Jason they were saying on the radio that a lot of Yankees were hit during the series, I guess he felt it was pay back time.

  24. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 12 )

OMG this Dodgers team right now sucks, these players aren’t suppose to be scrubs, Ethier can hit, Looney can hit, Dewitt can hit, Kemp can be star and they look like old guys right now vs the Mets, that should not be the case at all.

  25. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 12 )

“Jason they were saying on the radio that a lot of Yankees were hit during the series, I guess he felt it was pay back time.”

    12 yrs. of payback

  26. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

Joe: Rome, Florence, Bologna and Pisa. Florence is still my favorite though I had the best meal in Bologna.

Dennis: Despite being nearly felled by a tree in a thunderstorm, he got the tickets. I’ll send an email to you tomorrow if you don’t reply here.

  27. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

Brandon I guess it even trickles down to the AAA team.

  28. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

We are now 5 1/2 games back Tampa just lost. :)

Who would have ever thought that we’d be hoping for the Rays to lose.

  29. S.A.-Just win games

Wow. The Dodgers are kinda sucky

  30. thesportschickblog.com

pete! you stole my post practically word for word!! way to be original!!! ;)

  31. Scorpio

That’s the most pathetic throw I’ve ever seen. Mariah’s going on 40 years old, time to stop dressing like a 15 year old!

  32. Joe from Long Island

Jennifer – I know, but I just keep telling myself that WE (that is, the Yanks) just need to concentrate on winning OUR games.

  33. jason

Jennifer and Brandon thanks for the info.

    About those ads….

Who links to a PDF after you click on an ad?

Take it from someone in marketing, I assume that was a non negotiable LoHud demand to do the advertising.

PDF’s are known to slow down browsers when your not expecting them. Especially if the PDF is 1.5 megs.

  35. murphydog

Tabata is what, 19 years old?

It’s too bad, IMO, there’s so much attention being paid to everything that happens with him. I’m sure other 19 year olds in the minors have brain locks all the time and get benched and fined and yelled at. Tabata sounds a little immature anyway, given his run away episode. Others have to learn to hit a curveball; Tabata will have to learn to control himself before he can progress. That said, the emotional development taking place in the average male between 19 and 21 is often quite remarkable, so some of this immaturity is to be expected. He may not have the cool emotional profile of Phil Hughes but Hughes can’t hit like Tabata. Anyway, he’s got plenty of time to grow up.

The bad thing about Yankee fans getting more knowledgeable about the prospects is the usual Yankee perfection mania that accompanies such fan attention. I wish we could take the magnifying glass off this kid for another two years and just let him grow up without the added pressure and expectation.

  36. Joe from Long Island

Doesn’t Tabata have a wife and baby? This kid must have a ton of stuff on his mind. For everyone’s sake – including his own family’s – I hope he’s getting support beyond baseball.

  37. CB

Interesting new on McCallister getting sent up to Tampa. Cash said recently that both McCallister and Betances were going to be in low A all year. That was sort of puzzling given McCallister’s success at low A and his overall maturity and polish.

High A will be an interesting spot for McCallister. He has chance to put himself on the prospect map. Unless you have great stuff (betances) or are very young (Heredia) its hard for most prospect pitchers to get taken seriously in low A. McCallister’s been flying beneath the radar.

There’s been a talent gap in the yankee pitching between AAA and low A. If they can keep the talent spread out it helps as they can maintain a steady stream of prospects available to help the big club each season without a gap.

Also good to see Almonte back and hitting again. The Charleston offensive behemoth really took a big step back when Almonte got hurt (though Suttle and Romine went on the DL around the same time).

I’m very surprised to see how well Almonte is playing. I did not think he would hit for this kind of power at such a young age. He’s a very exciting prospect with a very high ceiling.

  38. Fredo Corleone

“Doesn’t Tabata have a wife and baby?”

He has a wife and is the baby apparently.

  39. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 12 )

murphy, I agree there are so many prospects who have done worse I mean Elijah Dukes for starters, then there is Brandon Philips when he was in AA, Carlos Gomez, Jose Reyes, Loney & Matt Kemp had some attitude problems in the minors before..I just want this kid to get it in his head wheather he hits or not hussel leave it on the field, but he needs a mentor somebody has to get to this kid before we lose him.

  40. murphydog

    Joe from Long Island

I hear you. My guess is that the Yankees are giving him lots of attention with a little tough love mixed in.

With his talent, it would hardly serve the Yankees to be neglectful of the kid’s needs outside of baseball. I bet they pay special attention to talented but immature kids as long as the kid responds. Some kids have to spend extra time in the batting cage, others have to grow up. IMO it’s all part of the development process.

  41. Fredo Corleone

“It’s too bad, IMO, there’s so much attention being paid to everything that happens with him. I’m sure other 19 year olds in the minors have brain locks all the time and get benched and fined and yelled at.”

Blame the organization for putting in a league he’s ill equipped to deal with both physically and mentally. He was nothing special in Hi A and putting him in AA this season has probably hurt more than it helped.

  42. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 12 )

McAllister was promoted WOW I didn’t know that..

  43. Fredo Corleone

Not much more that he can do in the Sallie League. Tampa is a good spot. Terrible hitter’s league, but superior talent to the Sallie. Good chance for him to face better competition and still build confidence.

  44. Russell W

Barry Zito’s fastball is sitting in the 83-86 range. Ouch. I take back everything I said a week or two ago about looking at Zito as an option.

  45. CB

The stuff with Tabata walking off the field and leaving the team is just emotional immaturity and not that big a deal in the overall picture.

But it’s the on the field stuff that is growing to be a concern. It’s the way he plays the game – and this is now being said by multiple people – about him just frankly not trying very hard. And there is no excuse for that regardless of age.

This is what the Thunder’s beat writer said this week:

“Could not agree more with a scouting report I saw on Jose Tabata that says he tends to turn his talent on and off. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen him make no effort on catchable balls that are hit right at him that end up landing. Anthony Hatch hit a ball off of Melancon in the 5th that was right to him, but he barely moved and watched it land about three feet in front of him. I hate to rip the guy, but enough already…”

    That is just not good.

I think it was absolutely the right move sending him to AA. Tabata has never had to struggle since he was 16 and it seems like he’s starting to coast.

The only way that stops is if he gets a better sense of what he has to do to be successful on the field and off.

They may or may not need to send him down at some point this year. But sending him to AA and keeping him there while he struggles may be the best thing possible for his development.

as a female athlete I am utterly appaled at that pathetic display by Mariah Carey. What a jerk. And what a jerk Derek Jeter for ever giving her the time of day!

  48. Mike S.

I hope that Japanese lefty in the video throws better than Igawa.

    Wait.

MARIAH throws better than Igawa. J/K. :-P

CB you think Jose needs tough love or demotion ?

  51. ER, from the set of

    Mariah Carey is UGLY

  52. CB

“Not much more that he can do in the Sallie League. Tampa is a good spot.”

There are very, very few 19 year olds anywhere in high A ball. McCallister is going to be one of the youngest players at that level in all of baseball.

If he succeeds at that age in that league it is a very big deal.

The level of play from low A to high A is a big step up because the players get considerably older.

Guys like Matt Wieters are playing in high A ball.

One of the bigger break out stories in the minors this year has been Jeremy Hellickson in part because he’s so young for high A. Hellickson is 8 months older than McCallister and played a full year in low A.

So McCallister is now basically one year younger and pitching at the same level as Hellickson.

This is a major challenge for McCallister. If he succeeds he becomes an very different prospect.

  53. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 12 )

CB you think our juvenile delinquent needs tough love or a demotion ?

  54. CB

    Brandon,

I think Tabata may need to hit .235 for a while. There’s been so much talk about him being in poor shape and not really trying that it’s unlikely to be simply rumors.

Mike Ashmore is a good minor league reporter and it’s not like he has an ax to grind. And its not like he’s a scout or prospect evaluator who is going to be hypercritical or nit pick his game.

If the team’s beat reporter is writing that he’s seen Tabata simply “make no effort” to catch fly balls in the outfield – that is very telling an not a positive.

Sending him down to Tampa and letting him hit .300 again isn’t going to help him in the long run, IMO. He’s shown the ability to hit for average in high A.

There are a number of things he still hasn’t shown. He may need to struggle for a while before he gets a sense of how hard it is to make it to the pros.

  55. kallardnyc

She’s hot… Not. DJ has done alot better yhen that.

  56. Nancy Drew boy

    CB

not to nitpick but McAllister is 20, not 19..And my god can Mariah Carey not dress like a complete prostitute

  57. ham_fighter

i just got back from trenton, and i hafta say that tabata looked overmatched in his 2 ab’s tonight and then the pulled him.

ajax had a single, but allowed two runs to score when he made a very ill -advised attempt at a diving catch in center

george kontos had it going tonight, the 2 runs that scored b/c of ajax’s bad dive were all he was charged with.

i was sitting right behind the scouts section, kontos was between 88-91 on his heater and he threw his curve well for strikes, i believe he struck out 7 and walked 2.

  58. Fredo Corleone

“There are very, very few 19 year olds anywhere in high A ball. McCallister is going to be one of the youngest players at that level in all of baseball.”

Well, McCallister has been 20 for nearly 6 months now, but this is a big step.

  59. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 12 )

Thanks to John Nalbone and Mike Ashmore

Manager Tony Franklin refused to address the specifics as to why the 19-year-old Tabata was pulled and sent back to the clubhouse.

“We had an in-house issue we needed to deal with. Don’t ask me what it is because I’m not telling you,” a visibly irritated Franklin said. “We’re very pleased with the way he is playing. He is playing hard. But there are certain standards that need to be met within this organization and with this team, and when those standards are not met we take action. It’s our job to make sure these players know what they are supposed to do at all times out there.”

Franklin did not rule out further discipline for Tabata, who was 0-for-2 before being removed.

“We’ll decide on that later,” Franklin said. “We’ll bring him in, talk to him and explain what we want to see him do and how we’d like to see him go about it.”

It is not yet known whether Tabata will accompany the team to New Britain, Conn., where the Thunder will begin a six-game road trip tomorrow.

    Oh Boy ..

  60. EricNS

    She throws better than Igawa!!

  61. CB

“Well, McCallister has been 20 for nearly 6 months now, but this is a big step.”

My mistake. I meant to write that there aren’t that many twenty year olds in high A. McCallister and Betances are the same age.

The point is the same. He’ll be one of the youngest players in high A.

To start this season there were only 7 players younger than 20 who were in high A.

  62. tonyb

No, No, No, you’ve got it all wrong…she was trying to throw a Gyroball!

She is an utterly ridiculous human being.

  63. ham_fighter

never a dull moment at a thunder game, they had 3 mascots a bat dog and 23 people threw out the ‘first pitch’, fortunatly they were throwing to the backup catcher, or i’d have been worried that pillaterri would have thrown his shoulder out.
it was a good time though.

  64. CB

    Brandon,

I just saw that report on Tabata over on RAB and Mike Ashmore’s site.

This is just not good news. One incident is one matter. But to have to get taken out of a game because you are just not trying is both bad and embarrassing.

He’s really dug himself a hole now. I have no idea what is going on with him.

  65. RSM

    Jennifer,

I watched the video you posted on the previous thread of the Yanks vs. Tigers in 1956. Thanks for sharing that. It’s hard to believe that was 50 years ago!! I almost cried watching it, and immediately called my father.

  66. RSM

“Even Giambi throws better than that”

    …but not Damon!!

  67. Yazman

What are you guys talking about? Did you see how Mariah’s sinker plummeted off the shelf? Pitch distance is coachable. She’s like CMW in heels (which give her more velocity for the same torque).

I forget, did anyone notice if she’s a lefty? ;)

  68. Nick in SF

“I can see why Jeter dumped her. That and the fact that she’s a total whack job.”

Um, wasn’t she married at the time too?

Wow, no Yankees loss and a great Lost episode. Not bad.

  69. bigjf

    Great 0-2 waste pitch.

  70. MJR

    “EricNS

    She throws better than Igawa!!”

At least she kept the ball down. :D

  71. Fernando Alejandro (Respect Jeter's Gangster)

That looks like Pavano’s recent throwing session.

  72. kasey

i didn’t read the entire comments section, did somebody already make the “better than igawa” joke here? if not, consider it made.

  73. YankeesLuv

Why does Mariah Carey with all her money dress that way.

  74. RockinDaBronx

she still throws better then Damon

  75. Raven

She and Tony Romo will be an ideal couple.
Just image they sing “Take Me Out To the Ball Game” together.

  76. Nick

Isn’t the Japenese pitcher Yu Darvish? The 21-year old phenom?

  77. sfill

it makes me sad derek actually went out with that crazy 80’s glitter chick – luckily that is wayyy old news!

  78. Drew

“And my god can Mariah Carey not dress like a complete prostitute”

The answer to that is no. Nothing more revolting than a woman pushing 40 trying to dress like she’s 20.

  79. Christine

She reminded me of a toddler. There is a commercial running now where fathers and children are playing catch – she looked just like the little child.

    Thanks for sharing, Pete!

  80. saucY

am i the only one who thinks she looked great in that clip? (aside from the throw, of course)

  81. YankeesLuv

“The answer to that is no. Nothing more revolting than a woman pushing 40 trying to dress like she’s 20.”

20? She tries to dress like a 12 year old, the woman is plain weird.

  82. tantronwilloughgy

Why does a tiresome bore “star” aka MC get so much adulation and concern? Very sad days!

  83. Shou

OMG I wanna stab myself in the eyes after watching that clip.
