More trouble for Tabata

May
29

Jose Tabata was taken out of tonight’s Trenton game for disciplinary reasons. John Nalbone has the story.

This is the second such incident in a few weeks for Tabata. He’s a very talented player but obviously has some issues. It will be interesting to see how the Yankees handle this.

What is going on with this kid? Is this new behavior from him, or did he have character issues when he was drafted?

  2. CB

As far as i know, neither Hanley Ramirez or Cano ever did something like this.

Both of those guys were guilty of being indifferent at times in the minors because they were so much better than the competition.

But neither had these kinds of problems.

Either way this is looking likely a completely wasted season for Tabata at best.

I hope he’s able to straighten things out and hopefully its not something more serious going on.

Baseballwise this makes the yanees need for young outfielders much more pressing.

It also makes signing Abreu to a multiyear deal that much more likely.

  3. #24FTW

Signing Abreu to a multiyear is highly unlikely – regardless of these issues with Tabata. The Yankees still have Austin Jackson and Brett Gardner, both of whom are closer to making the big club than Tabata is as of now.

Besides, I would hope that Yankee management has noticed Abreu’s refusal to catch a ball thats anywhere near a wall and won’t resign him based on that alone!

  4. Nick in SF

Quick, trade Tabata for Johan Santana. If the Mets will eat some of the salary.

  5. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 12 )

IDK what is worse this crap or hearing Jerry West talk about Kobe Bryant…WELL JERRY YOU GAVE HIM FREAKING PAU GASOL !

  6. Aaron (from Albany)

The Mets got Schneider and Church for the troubled Milledge.. But however MLB HATES the yanks, so I doubt we could get anything for tabata.. Trade him to Pitt for marte or duke

  7. bigjf

I’d like to hear the specifics of the issue before I call for his head, but this kid is only 19 so I’m not ready to give up on him yet.

“The Mets got Schneider and Church for the troubled Milledge.. But however MLB HATES the yanks, so I doubt we could get anything for tabata.. Trade him to Pitt for marte or duke”

this is the type of post I can’t stand, he is a pain right now, but no one should want to give up on him especially for Marte or Duke. This is growing pains you don’t just deal him away, you whoop his a.., you get in his head but you don’t trade him, he has the type of talent that can one day comeback and bite an organization.

  9. GreenBeret7

He’s 19 years old, in a foreign country and failing for the first time in his life. For all anybody knows, he was upset and smashed some bats, a water cooler or a toilet. He’s a kid playing with people that are 2-3 year older than he is. To make matters worth, he isn’t old enough to go out and unwind with his team mates.

  10. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 12 )

Thank your real GM Laker fans Jerry West, he actually convinced Memphis Kwame Brown for Pau Gasol was a good deal for them.

  11. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 12 )

    GB7 man it’s been awhile what’s new w/ you :)

  12. JeterMack Clutch

Ajax tried to catch a sinking single and Jose was not there to back it up, the ball went under Austin’s mit and to the wall for a triple

  13. Mark

It is good to see Trenton manager Tony Franklin doesn’t care how high of a prospect you are he is not going to take anyone’s s***.

  14. Ryan

Jerry West hasn’t been the Grizzlies’ GM for the past year.

  15. JeterMack Clutch

I know it would be unprecedented, but teh FO should bring his wife and child to the states or something, anything to make him comfortable

  16. Drew

Chris Wallace gave away Pau Gasol to the Lakers not the logo.

  17. GreenBeret7

Doing much better, Brandon…thanks for asking. How are you and your family doing? I was lagged in the other night, but, Jesus, this place was infested with trolls…as bad as the ESPN board. And not even quality trolling. It’s sad that the children have absolutely no imagination any more.

  18. GreenBeret7

    That’s logged in…not lagged in…although I guess I am lagging a bit.

  19. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 12 )

“Chris Wallace gave away Pau Gasol to the Lakers not the logo.”

Jerry West was the guy behind that deal everybody can see it, why the hell in a rebuilding effort would Wallace send him for Kwame Brown of all people don’t tell me you believe that, if you do you might as well believe Clemens didn’t do nothing w/ that country singer.

  20. NJ in Tampa

I hope we can draft some big time outfielders this year.

  21. Aaron (from Albany)

ok i understand what ure saying but we have melky, and ajack and im sure hanks gonna spend some $$ on a free agent outfielder with in the next few years.. u really think tabata is gonna be a head turner, come on.. melky, jackson and jose arent all gonna be superstars.. gotta think logically.. Andy is done more then likely and we need a lefty..

  22. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 12 )

I’m doing well my family is healthy and calm, we know about the trolls but it’s same Ol’ same Ol’, I know it is sad you should have seen this kid last night talking some smack and then his team was shutdown by the Mariners 1 – 0. Good to see you back.

    no, pettitte..lol

  25. Dr. J

Please Detroit… put a dent in the mystical Lakers-Celtics finals :(

  26. ham_fighter

i was at the game, on the play it did seem like it took a long time for jose to get there, but then again, the ball was a liner straight up the middle, so he had a long way to go and a short time to get there.

i can tell you that tony franklin was PISSED when they came into the dugout after the 3rd out though.

  27. GreenBeret7

Pettitte has already said that if he’s effective and stays healthy this year, that he plans on pitching next year in the new Stadium. That could put him up around 240 wins and over 2,000 strike outs. That could very well make him think about sticking around a bit longer. His power pitches may not be what they once were, but, he’s still a winner and a lot smarter.

  28. GreenBeret7

Thanks, Brandon. Much appreciated. Not a big Giambi fan, but, it’s great to see his approach and the results. He and Mussina could be the real pleasant surprises this year.

  29. Aaron (from Albany)

I agree, but we need to think logically, Kennedy sucks, and we dont know about Hughes, ALMOST EVERYTIME THERES A BIG “3” 1 out of the 3 pans out.. im guessing joba’s the one..

  30. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 12 )

hopefully they stay healthy and produce GB7, I’m crossing my fingers

  31. ham_fighter

you guys that are counting on ajax and tabata to be a corner outfielder and want the yankees to keep a spot open for them are getting way ahead of things. both are very young guys struggling at aa ball and have proven nothing yet except that they are atheletic. i crack up when people write on here that both of them will be in new york in 2010 if not sooner, both of them could be back in charlestown by the end of this season. im not saying that neither of them will make it in the bigs, but all 4 of the yankees outfielders contracts will expire before either of them comes close to the majors and the yankees cant just expect that either or both will be ready for thier outfield anytime soon, if ever.

  32. Aaron (from Albany)

    I agree with Ham_Fighter

  33. GreenBeret7

Brandon, I’d cross my fingers, too, but, at my age, it may be difficult to uncross them. I’ll just hope a lot.

  34. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 12 )

    good one GB7

  35. JGNYC

The warm air in Phoenix must be doing good for Randy Johnson. He struck out 9 tonight to tie Clemens on the all-time list. He looked so lifeless when he was here, I just can’t believe he’s doing so well after another surgery. I really thought he had nothing left.

  36. GreenBeret7

It’s difficult to claim that Jackson is struggling at AA Trenton when he’s hitting .280.  If you’re expecting 30 homers a year from him…don’t.  He’s a line drive hitter, an exceptional fielder and a lot of speed.  He’s an extra base, gap type hitter.

  41. Nick in SF

Hudson, Mulder, and Zito panned out pretty well. Not later, but while they were still the Big 3. I forget, maybe they weren’t the Big 3 until they were already panning out? Hmmm.

  42. GreenBeret7

Thanks, Brandon. If I can’t be smart, I’ll try to be witty. At least, half the time.

  43. GreenBeret7

I don’t think I hit it three times, but, maybe it happened while looking for p0rn. Need to get Matsui to send me copies of his collection.

  44. ham_fighter

i have seen ajax play 3 times so far this year and he is showing alot of promise, they are batting him 3rd and playing him in center and he’s doing well defensivly, tonight’s bad dive play was the kind of thing a young guy will do in aa ball. but he’s very raw and looks bad at the plate at times. maybe hes not struggling, but i wouldnt say he’s thriving either. and i like the guy alot, but he’s still a loooooong way from being a major league corner outfielder at this point.

  45. GreenBeret7

He’s improved a ton since he was down here in Charleston. He’s strictly center field material, though. As a hitter, he’s sort of a right handed version of Johnny Damon with an arm. I figure that he’ll move up late this season to Scranton and, as long as he keeps improving, he’ll possibly be a mid to late season call up in 2009. He has increased his walks and really cut down on the strike outs.

  46. ham_fighter

i hope you’re right and i think he will do well eventully but i think it’ll be a while till he’s new york ready. meanwhile, we have 4 of’s now who may all be gone before ajax is ready for prime time. if they decide not to sign abreu or another mlb quality outfielder this offseason because they want to keep a spot open for either ajax or tabata, we will have possibly the worst outfield in the majors next season.

  47. ham_fighter

btw, good to see you back gb!

  48. Stormrider6

I just wanted to say a quick thanks to you all who do such a great job keeping up with the Yankee prospects! I have only recently begun to pay attention to the minor leagues, and its really an exciting new facet of the game… I am sure that I’m not the only one who’s disappointed that Igawa is robbing a roster spot in Scranton! I actually grew up in Binghamton and saw Reyes and Wright play for the B-Mets a few times when I was home from college a few years ago. I wish I had paid a bit more attention to Trenton when they came to town…

Also, NoMaas’s minor league board is hilarious, if a little juvenile. Love is a Tabatafield, indeed!

Again, thanks, and keep up the good work!

  49. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 12 )

    “Love is a Tabatafield” ?

I don’t get it maybe I’m getting old for this

  50. GreenBeret7

I think that Abreu will be resigned. He’s still a good right fielder, certainly the best that would be on the market this year. He’s a quality run producer, he walks a lot, can hit 20-22 homers and still steal 25-30 bases. NYY will have no real power next year, beyond Rodriguez. Posada will give you the same 20-22 homers. Yankee fans are hoping for a signing of Teixeira, but, I think he’ll either stay in Atlanta or go home to play in Baltimore. The only real power hitter available would be Dunn. A lot of power, but, a ton of strike outs, and brutal in the field. Burrell is the same kind of player, but, neither can play first base worth a damned. They’re actually better outfielders.

  51. GreenBeret7

Thanks for the welcome Ham. Much appreciated.

  54. jay destro

I was actually at that thunder game last night and didn’t see any on field issue that jose had. I thought it was weird when they took him out. Must have been something he said or did in the dugout.

Btw austin jackson is a fun player to watch.

  55. murphydog

First of all, GB7, great to see you again my friend.

IMO, the Tabata saga is really a case of age and circumstances. The kid (19) is married with one or two kids, and is away from home. He’s not a NYer, who would bluster his way through problems and he’s not a Cali Boy, like Hughes, who is cool and above the fray (good qualities for a pitcher). He’s a kid from Venezuela who is in a foreign country and who obviously has a lot of growing up to do. The question is when does he become a net loss? IMO, we’re nowhere near that point.

Player development is really Research and Development. Not every player works out as planned. But if the kid really has the upside he is supposed to have, you should be very patient. And a player development program in a system as rich as the Yankees can afford to be patient. Think of any 19 year old boy you know – it could suddenly “click” at any time and he could snap out of it. He wasn’t going to be ready before age 21 or 22 in all likelihood anyway so it’s not like this set back is significantly hampering the Yankees’ future.

If the Yankees are truly committed to developing talent, they will flex with this kid and find a way to get him to reach his potential. You have to teach some kids how to hit a curveball. Some other kids you have to teach how to be a man. Tough love, like being taken out of a game for failing to hustle or brain cramping, is just one of many tools to bring along a player.

  56. Doreen

Hey, GB7, good to “see” you again.

    murphydog –
Again, you’ve got it right. Expecting a 19-year-old to handle all the pressures of minor league life without incident is crazy. Add in the specifics of Tabata’s circumstances, and it’s even more crazy. Patience (and some tough-love) is key. I am hopeful the Yankees do not bail out on this boy, and allow him to mature both as a human being and as a talented ballplayer. It will certainly be disappointing if they give up too soon. I just think about by own kids, my nephew, and a lot of the late-teens/early-20’s kids I know, and I don’t think any of them could handle the trials of life in the minor leagues.

    Jay Destro –
Was Reggie there last night? If so, did you get your “photo-op?”

  57. sunny615

Maturity will definitely be one of the tougher lessons the Yankees will have to teach to Tabata.

  58. Triple OG

Thank Nick for making me really feel old

  59. Old Ranger

    GrenBeret7…
Welcome back, we missed you. You doing better or S.O.?
Haven’t read today, so when I saw you LAGED in I thought I’d ask. Keep up the good fight.27/08?

  60. NJ YankeeFan

I was at the game and there was an incident in the dugout after the inning and Tabata looked to have ben pulled backwards into thetunnel. A couple minutes later he came out, grabbed his bats from the rack, went to the opposite side of the dugout and got his hat and glove and walked to the locker room. He was not looking too happy when he left the building after the game last night.

In addition to failing to backup Jackson on the fly ball there was another fly hit to medium right field tha Corona went deep to get. Tabata should have called him off of that one but he was once again lazy in getting to it. Tabata needs to get his stuff together quickly. How many more incidents are the Yankees willing to endure with him? Two in a month cannot bode well for him.

On a side note – Reggie was not there last night.

  61. Doreen

    NJ Yankees Fan –
We were at the rained-out game a couple of Sundays ago, and there was a play – a fly ball to the outfield that no one caught – where Tabata could have been more aggressive on, shall we say? So perhaps last night was a culmination of a few incidents, more than just last night?

  62. NJ YankeeFan

Doreen – It very well could have been a culmination of events. It seems Tabata doesn’t always have his head in the game. Too many times he seems to just go through the motions (if he moves) when fielding. He definitly has not been aggressive in throwing the ball back in either. All other OF’s have nailed guys at the plate with throws or been aggressive eenough trying to. Add in his hitting woes (3 for 13 during the homestand) and his frustration was bound to set in again.

  63. Miles Roche

    Welcome back, GreenBeret!

Agree with you on Abreu coming back, although i believe it will be in the DH capacity. . .

  64. Paulie

I dont think very much is settled in the Yankee outfield in the future. Melky is showing himself to be a .250 hitter(less from the right side)with little power. If we want a better defesive outfileder we would go with Gardner who could at least hit .250 and steal a bunch of bases. Melky is serverly overated because he is a Yankee. Left field is a disaster who two aged veterens, who make every play an adventure and niether of whom can throw. Abreu wont go near fences but he can at least hit and sometimes throw somebody out. I think that the Yankees need to rethink both Left and Center and sign Abreu. Not suure what is out there in free agency maybe Carl Craford? but Damon can be moved in the of season, Giambi could be let go and Matzuii could be a permanent DH

  65. bodhisattva

    JETERMACK,

That’s a terrific idea. Hank should hear it. It’s nice to see someone make a suggestion rather than make a judgement.
