The commissioner needs to look into this
When Derek Jeter was hit on a hand by a Daniel Cabrera pitch May 20, Torre was watching on television at Dodger Stadium. He picked up the phone and immediately telephoned his old clubhouse back in the Bronx.
“It sounded ugly,†Torre said. “I called the training room just to see how he was. He got on the phone and said he was OK.â€
Clearly Torre is fraternizing with opposing players and should be suspended immediately.
Joe is in town this weekend to face the Mets. I was going to stop in and pay my respects but it takes way more than that to make going to Shea Stadium worth the hassle and possible rat attacks.

i miss torre
i AGREE Pete
When the heck is JOE TORRE day?
I guess we have to wait until he retires from Chavez Ravine, but St. Joe’s addition to Monument Park would be worthwhile just to hear Michael Kay’s mouth full of crow.
I guess this threw the Earth off its orbit. I think Commish has bigger problems. Like steroids and drug testing, dangerous shattering bats and umpires who cant see home run balls.
Pete, you are being facetious, right?
Even so, I don’t necessarily disagree. Obviously, Torre shouldn’t be suspended. But does he have to call the training room right then and there? Jeter wasn’t in any grave danger. I’m guessing Derek would have been able to accept the call after the game.
Just because Torre has the phone number to the trainers room at Yankee Stadium doesn’t mean he should use it at will. There is a new manager there, for goodness sakes.
Hopefully, they’ll change the number to the new place next season.

the 1987 neon figures on the side of the stadium are a treat, though, pete.
I think Torre is missing the Yankees.
Kei Igawa is the first base coach in Scranton.
It’s a little strange, but I really couldn’t care less.
A-Rod has an extremely close relationship with Piniella and sought his advice in the past.
Piniella just never called the trainer’s room or clubhouse after A-Rod had a bad night.
I don’t see this as a big deal regardless if the “offender” is Joe Torre, Lou Piniella, or Larry Bowa.
I also think this kind of thing happens a lot more than we think and we’re only hearing about it because it’s Joe Torre.
I don’t really see the big fuss. It appears that Torre was concerned about the welfare of one of his former players. Torre and Jeter have always been close. I don’t see any foul here. I’ll agree that the timing could have been better.
Guys: I’m kidding. Some members of the media have ripped Torre for calling his former players this season, which I found amusing. That’s all.
How about Torre’s new Visa commercial ? He looks pretty stylin’ on that surfboard !
CP –
When you are dating someone, do you ever think about a past relationship that meant something to you?
Well what if you had spent the best 12 years of your life with someone and you just started seeing someone new, do you suppose you might let your mind wander from time to time back to your previous love?
Of course you would – and it would be ridiculous to harbor resentment against Joe Torre for behaving in a similar way toward the Yankees.
COULDN’T AGREE MORE, PETE. WELL SAID ALTHOUGH SUSPENSION MAY BE A BIT MUCH. MAYBE JUST A FINE. HE LEFT US – WE MOVED ON -HE SHOULD DO THE SAME.
Michael Kay will get on the case!
I agree with Giuseppe. The only thing that matters is the Yankees and the race, or chase as it may be.
The one guy I wouldn’t mind seeing walk through the door, though, is Larry Bowa.
I suspect that Torre is just the teeniest tiniest happy where he’s at. He’s got some great clay to mold there.
I think it’s kind of sweet to hear that Torre still cares about his former players that much, that anyone cares. It can be a cold world. Then again, I’m on the softhearted side.
Frank,
Those commercials are funny, but the Dodger cap on the surfboard is a bit much. I don’t think he wore a Yankee cap when swimming in Maui.
If you can’t have the one you love, love the one you’re with!
amazing!!

i long for the day when pete doesn’t have to explain every single joke in the comments section of a post.
Torre is doing just fine with Furcal, he doesn’t need Jeter.
Dan McCutchen tossed from the game for throwing behind the back of the hitter.
Also Dave Miley was tossed.
The Mets are pounding Penny and the Dodgers
I find it more interesting that he’s watching Yankee games. I think that’s very telling. I doubt that when Lou Piniella is home, he turns on the TV to see the Rays. If he did, he’d probably be calling to complain about the fact that when he managed, they didn’t play as well as they are now.
Torre was completely wrong. He could of just left Jeter a message on his cell phone asking if he was ok. Jeter wouldn’t know if he it was broken until he took an MRI anyway. Only team personnel is supposed to call the club house. So even though Torre was calling to do something nice he definitely did over step his boundaries. Every interview that Torre does about NY he makes sure to add in that he is happy where he is, and HE needed to get out of here. Even though that isn’t true buecause they got rid of him not the other way around. But what Torre did was disrespectful of Girardi and he has no right calling the clubhouse of a team where he is no longer the manager.
Rebecca (if you’re readin this) – I saw your post on Pete’s previous thread. If you’re reading this, it seems like you’re back from Italy. How did you enjoy it?
“Torre is doing just fine with Furcal, he doesn’t need Jeter.”
Same Furcal that hasn’t played in 3 weeks?
Dodgers are waking up a little bit
Hey Pete, just wanted to say awesome Who reference earlier on the “meet the new boss, same as the old boss” post. Don’t know if anyone else caught it but I appreciated it.
if people want to criticize torre for his actions, maybe they should look at the trouble girardi got in with the marlins two seasons ago. apparently he spoke about other players with their respective managers and the marlins ownership didn’t like it. it shouldn’t be a big deal. you can scout all you want and study all you want, but the players on the field make the plays or they don’t. its been a tough season to try to evaluate girardi this year in what is as close to a rebuilding year as a team like the yankees will have. next year should be interesting, and i both miss torre, though welcome girardi and his fresh perspective.
Let’s put the spy in leg irons. We’ll give him a speedy trial then do something really nasty, like… force him to manage the Dodgers.
But you have to know that when Big Stein was truly in charge, he would have changed that number.
What everyone is missing is that Girardi also talks to Torre often for advice. If the Yankees had a problem with it then Torre would stop calling. But obviously they don’t. There are more important things to talk about regarding this team.
It’s not really a big deal one way or the other, though it is a bit humorous that some are making a big deal about Torre calling about former players. Joe Girardi is the sheriff in town now. Joe Torre is not walking through that door, Larry Bowa is not walking through that door, and Don Mattingly is not walking through that door.
Joe Torre, classy guy.
It’s been said before and it’ll be said again. He’s sorely missed.
torre misses jeter and I don’t blame him
I doubt that Torre will ever have that Yankee tattoo on his butt lasered off.
I can always count on your for a laugh, Pete ! Thanks !
Since this is the third time he has called (Jeter DL, and when Posade and Arod went DL) I doubt MLB cares. Even though they should suspend him, and of course the Torre lovers will defend him.
Suspended? Torre should be drawn and quartered!
To show such genuine affection for Jeter…. disgusting!
I miss you Joe T.!!
who cares, none of us know who calls who during a game, or after one. there is no log of this to know. and not for nothing, if it wasn’t jeter would anyone have found out about this? maybe pinella called a-rod after his quad injury, but since most people don’t want to hear about a-rod we never found out.
I can’t believe some of you guys have a difficult time deciphering when Pete’s being sarcastic. It isn’t rocket science.
TKinDC-
Of course I have thought about past relationships. I just have never called an ex-girlfriend during the middle of a date with my current girlfriend.
I totally get what your saying, trust me. But does Torre need to be calling the trainers room at Yankee Stadium in the middle of the game? And then tell people about it?
Its just kinda weird. Whether Jeter has a broken hand or not really affects Torre in no way at all.
-CP
Ha ha, but seriously, if you really want to take the anti-bonehead stance here, no silly comments of your own about the Great Unwashed of Shea. I live in Boston and remarks like this are what make the baseball so-called community here so hard to take seriously. But of course you know that, fellow UM-ie. Remember that bit the UMass marching band (I know, stop laughing) had about “the power and class of New England”? The Yanks are the power and class of baseball. As part of the Yankee community we can leave these silly little petty digs to the likes of the so-called “nation,” ok?
It never surprises me that the people who don’t get the jokes are also most often the people with the worst spelling and grammar.
Torre shouldn’t be suspended for calling Jeter to see if he was okay – those guys spent 12 years together and are as close as they can be. Torre has been like a 2nd father to Jeter – I don’t see anything wrong with that. If he were talking numbers and trades then I say suspend him. People are going to say – why didn’t he just call him at home or on his cell – what’s the difference>> he called him -
suspended?
please peter…we get that you hate torre because he beat your beloved red sox over and over…but come on.
he wanted to see how one of his ex players was doing.
come on pete, your blind love for all things boston is getting a little silly.
did you see the giants get their rings last night?
Wheelz, you need to look up the definition of sarcasm in the dictionary.
It was a joke, get over it.
CP
I can’t believe anyone would have an issue with this.
Jeter and Posada have referred to Torre as their “second father.” Torre has always said he views Jeter “like a son.” I’m sure he feels that way about Jorge, too.
Why shouldn’t he check in to see that his “son” is ok? No one, except someone extremely anal who doesn’t have any grasp of human relationships, would object.
Find another cause, will you?
