Wrapping it up from Camden Yards

In what is quite a feat of technology, I’m blogging from a moving car in Maryland while listening to a game from Seattle on satellite radio. I’m not driving, however.

In case you missed it, Joba threw 27 more pitches in the bullpen in two simulated innings. That got him to 55. The Yankees will talk it over on Thursday to decide what happens next.

“It’s what we’re going to have to talk about,” Joe Girardi said. “You would think he could get up to 70, possibly 75, in his first outing.”

Joba is being very level-headed about the whole thing. He wants to wait to see how he feels on Friday (after a tough workout tomorrow) before he gives his opinion. Based on nothing other than that it makes sense, I would guess he starts Monday or Tuesday.

Meanwhile, check out these stats:

Hideki Matsui is 14 of 27 in his last seven games with 13 runs scored.

The Big G has a 12-for-23 streak to raise his batting average to .244.

Giambi on the mustache: “You’ve got to switch it up. I try and keep things fun on this team. Unfortunately now the ‘stache has got to stay.”

Giambi has Shelley Duncan and Johnny Damon growing their ‘staches. Joba tried it and quit.

“He looked like a fifth grader,” Giambi said.

I yearn to see Matsui and Wang with mustaches. I want a team-wide mustache pact. I think Melky’s babyface would look HILARIOUS no matter what. If it’s a thick, redolent Burt-Reynolds style beauty, or if it’s the shadiest of teenage-looking crapstaches, either way it’ll be awesome.

    I’m growing my mustache, too!

  3. DeNiro May 29th, 2008 at 12:18 am

hey pete, love he blog, when do you think we’ll see jb cox and melancon

  4. Jeff May 29th, 2008 at 12:18 am

Monday would be the perfect day because its a road game in Minni against Livan Hernandez…

Tuesday = Halladay at the Stadium

And thats to much hoopla on top of the Joba starting hoopla to begin with…

  5. Sam May 29th, 2008 at 12:19 am

    FREE JB COX

  6. rich May 29th, 2008 at 12:19 am

I seem to remember Giambi and Damon growing moustaches last year in later April. If I remeber correctly it was only about two weeks and Damon looked like the cop from the village people.

Had tickets to next Tuesdays game but gave them away because of work. I’m going to flip out if I had the chance to see Jobas first start and missed it.

  7. Nick in SF May 29th, 2008 at 12:21 am

Mariners beat Red Sox. Wild, wacky stuff.

  8. Buddy Biancalana May 29th, 2008 at 12:22 am

Hey I’m female & I’m growing my stache too!

    Just Kidding!

  9. JoeT 28 in 09!! May 29th, 2008 at 12:22 am

Whitey – are you calling for a blog-wide stache??

  10. kd May 29th, 2008 at 12:22 am

One of the absolute best things about this blog are the Giambi quotes. Now that he is not a top player anymore he’s not on Sportscenter anymore. This guy is just plain funny.

He won’t be a Yankee next year, but it’ll be nice to hear what he has to say next year. My guess is that he’ll be a Ranger.

  11. berniepaul&tino May 29th, 2008 at 12:22 am

wow sox lose two of three to the mariners tonight they go down 1-0

  12. Buddy Biancalana May 29th, 2008 at 12:23 am

Just kidding about being female of course.

  13. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 12 ) May 29th, 2008 at 12:24 am

the AL is getting more competitive.

  14. kd May 29th, 2008 at 12:26 am

I think that I might have a solution for the Yankees lack of inspired play. Let Paul O’Neal and Bernie back in the clubhouse. A couple of grinders who get everything out of their talent. They could be special instructors or something.

That’ll get some of these guys to go in the right direction.

  15. stuart May 29th, 2008 at 12:26 am

russ great sux game tonight!!I guess your mommy probably made you go to bed!!!

sux had a great road trip they won 1 game and lost 5, but they played the mighty mariners….

11- 19 on the road for the sux, yeah they can hit anywhere!!!!!!!!

they are the power in baseball you just better tell the mariners that….

how is daisuke doing?? 125 pitch 6 inning outings affecting him?/ don’t worry they only have him under contract for 5 more yrs….

  16. berniepaul&tino May 29th, 2008 at 12:27 am

id say let oneill and tino back in the clubhouse. bernie was excellent but from everything i heard he was aloof in the clubhouse and tino was the type of guy to get in peoples faces and let them know when they needed to step up.

  17. berniepaul&tino May 29th, 2008 at 12:28 am

stuart why are u picking a fight with a troll just ignore them

  18. mel May 29th, 2008 at 12:29 am

Wakefield went 8IP, giving up a solo HR. Bedard went 7. We caught Bedard at a good time.

    Brandon,

The AL East is the best division. The Central sucks.

  19. Confucius May 29th, 2008 at 12:29 am

I’m starting to like Bedard. He always shuts down the Sox and gets his brains beat in by the Yanks.

No wonder the O’s traded him. Wasn’t a good fit.

  20. Mop Up Man May 29th, 2008 at 12:29 am

With tomorrow being a dark one for the Yankees, here’s to hoping that the DFA wire heats up with the likes of Ensberg, and – in a dream world – LaTroy “21 forever” Hawkins.

  21. DFox May 29th, 2008 at 12:29 am

Haha yeah the Red Sox are going in the completely wrong direction. If they lose Matsuzaka for any extended period of time, it’s going to be 2006 all over again for them. With too many pedestrian starters and a lackluster lineup I can’t see the Red Sox being this “automatic” AL east winner like a lot of people were forecasting. I think if any one said that things look brighter for the Red Sox at this point than the Yankees they’d be lying.

  22. Nick in SF May 29th, 2008 at 12:33 am

Didn’t they make fun of us for doing it against the Mariners?

  23. Confucius May 29th, 2008 at 12:38 am

“With too many pedestrian starters and a lackluster lineup”

That’s kind of a stretch. They’ve gotten great starts out of Lester, Buccholz, and Masterson (who would likely take Dice-K’s place). And their lackluster lineup is going to have five starters on the All-Star team, to say nothing of Lowell. They’d survive.

That’s assuming this shoulder fatigue is anything that doesn’t require only a bit of rest.

I’d say once we get Posada back and Joba in the rotation, we’re on an even playing field with them. And they’ve got the division lead on us. So still brighter for them right now.

  24. pat May 29th, 2008 at 12:41 am

Troy Percival and Dice-K have dates with an MRI tube this week. Welcome to our world Rays and Sox.

  25. DFox May 29th, 2008 at 12:45 am

Confucius, Dice-K was their only starter who was consistently performing (even though the number of walks he issued was less than impressive). I’m not even a Red Sox fan and I think it has to scare you very much that they are call this a “fatigued” shoulder or whatever. Do people forget what happend to Dice-K last year? He basically hit a wall for the second half of the season. And not to mention that their ace has also been less than impressive.

And about the lineup, let’s not be crazy and compare the lineup based on online all-star ballot votes that allow people to vote 25 times. Let’s base it on what we know and we all know that the Yankees have a much better lineup, because after all, that’s what they were built for.

I truly believe that in a month or two the Red Sox are going to be saying to themselves that they had one chance to put the Yankees away and that was in these first 50 games.

  26. Don Vito A. Bellamo May 29th, 2008 at 12:47 am

We are 26-27 and only 3 games back in the loss column to the BoSux. Consider this,,,,if the season ended today and we were playing OLD OLD OLD baseball playoff rules….It would be the Tampa Bay Rays and the Chicago Cubs in the World Series. Anyone that wants to bet me that is NOT this year’s World Series match up….send your money to : 355… nah…just kidding…Good Night, ALL ! :-)

  27. YanksFanLV May 29th, 2008 at 1:00 am

I think I’ll start growing my stache also, especially with a week long vacation coming up! And yeah giambi does have great quotes, I live in Vegas, and I need to find out where he works out in the off season so I can go see him!

  28. Skippy May 29th, 2008 at 1:15 am

    Who’s driving?

  29. Yazman May 29th, 2008 at 1:40 am

“Now that he is not a top player anymore he’s not on Sportscenter…”

Giambi may not be a top player anymore, but he is the top hitter on the Yanks this year if you go by OPS (.949 before tonight) or a number of other offensive stats (per AB).

Based on 540 ABs, Giambi project to 44 HRs, 108 RBIs, 96 Runs, .393 OBP, .556 slugging. Not bad!

  30. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 12 ) May 29th, 2008 at 1:46 am

that SOB has to stay healthy

  31. eric May 29th, 2008 at 1:47 am

pete, i know you like the big G but dont sell him short. A .244 avg is almost irrelevant; its his .950 OPS (good for top-5 in the AL), which deserves mention.

  32. hughes fan May 29th, 2008 at 1:48 am

it appears that the yankees and red sox make up most of the starting all star spots this year as of now. hopefully they aren’t all on the dl by then or else the national league might have a shot.

    injuries are ridiculous this year.

  33. Dynasty is Destiny! May 29th, 2008 at 2:02 am

“Based on 540 ABs, Giambi project to 44 HRs, 108 RBIs, 96 Runs, .393 OBP, .556 slugging. Not bad!”

Looks like Giambi is doing what he did in ’06…starts off slow but then really takes off…

Let’s just hope it continues and he meets those projections!

  34. John May 29th, 2008 at 2:21 am

Pete, Is Sweeny driving the whole way back tonight?!?!?! If so, how’d you swing that deal!

  35. sunny615 May 29th, 2008 at 2:32 am

Just bad russ… he brings nothing to the blog except anger and bitterness.

  36. sunny615 May 29th, 2008 at 2:32 am

Pete – If anyone is taking a poll, I’m for keeping russ out. Like I said above, he adds nothing to the discussion.

  37. 86w183 May 29th, 2008 at 8:12 am

The G-Man is making a case for being in pinstripes next year. Considering he has a $ 5 million buyout, if he’d play for $ 8 mill or so he could be a force at DH, especially is the Yanks can land Teixiera.

Now will somebody please find a LH relief pitcher and RH hitter than murders lefties? We yap all the time about Joba this and Joba that, but who do you guys want to see in those two vacant roles? I’ve suggest Xavier Nady and Damaso Marte’, but I’m interested in other possibilities.

  38. sang337 May 29th, 2008 at 9:12 am

pete, you’ve probably talked about this already, but what are your thoughts about converting joba into a starter mid-season or even converting him to a starter at all? since you’re around the club, did the idea come from girardi/ cashman or was it from hank? the mo/joba combo is reminiscient of the wetteland/mo combo of the mid 90′s — a 7 inning game. personally, i think it’d be better to keep joba as the set up guy, which solidifies that portion of the bullpen, and keeps him in line as the heir apparent to mo.

  39. j May 29th, 2008 at 9:22 am

check out pedroia and ellsbury’s road numbers..not pretty.

  40. Farnn May 29th, 2008 at 10:18 am

Sang, Pete has discussed the Joba situation many times, and he is a strong supporter of moving Joba to the starting rotation. The plan of transitioning Joba to a starter was the teams plan fromt he beginning of the season, they simply had to take into account his innings limit and so started him in the bullpen this season.
