Lots of takers for early batting practice

Peter Abraham
May
30

As they often do, the Yankees are having an optional early batting practice after a day off.

A big crowd has turned out: A-Rod, Jeter, Melky, Robbie, Shelley, Wilson Betemit and Chad Moeller. Pitchers usually don’t show up. But Joba is here with his little son, Karter.

Karter is throwing a ball around with his dad. He’s a cute little kid.

    La Pornstache Familia :)

  2. Laura - Still in shock over the Rays

What? When did Joba get a kid? I don’t remember ever saying that Joba was married with children. Is that a misprint, Pete?

  3. BoogieDown

    Joba has a kid?

  4. murphydog

Sounds like all the right players got the memo.

  5. murphydog

    Who said he was married?

  6. BoogieDown

Haha… Pete just let the cat out of the bag.

  7. Sara

I guess you guys didn’t watch the Joba YESterday’s? He has a little boy. Joba is not married though

  8. Christa

Aww… how cute. Anyone know how old his little boy is?

  9. Scorpio

Yes, Joba has a son. He was on the show YESterdays with him.
And if you Wikipedia Melky Cabrera, he has a son also.

  10. Steph

Yeah, Joba has a kid with his girlfriend. Did they have a radar gun on his little arm?

Hopefully the extra BP helps them out in the game.

  11. murphydog

Joba has a girlfriend, but doesn’t exactly sound like she’s the baby momma.

    http://www.nypost.com/seven/08.....nkees_.htm

  12. Clare

The fact Joba has a kid was extensively reported last year, plus Karter was on the YESterdays show on Joba. Karter’s mother, however, was not on the show – but was apparently just off camera.

  13. Will

I don’t think he’s married but he does have a kid. And today I just saw that Jose Tabata has a kid as well. Hard to imagine in my world seeing most people I know wait until they are thirty to have kids. Certainly a lot of pressure on them.

  14. murphydog

    Steph:

I wasn’t sure. Is the GF the mother?

  15. TKinDC

Would I be out of line to wish that Joba doesn’t go the “Clemens Route” by naming all of his kids names that start with “K”?

I’d almost prefer the George Foreman approach! lol.

  16. Steph

I’m not sure if the GF is the mother, but I do remember hearing that she takes care of him back in Nebraska while he’s pitching.

  17. Luthien

So Melky, Joba, and Jose Tabata all have kids???

I’m sorry, maybe I’m old fashioned, but whatever happened to waiting until you’re married?

  18. Laura - Still in shock over the Rays

Geez, you’d think these players would be smart enough to wait before having these kids. How about being married first? What a novel concept!

Sorry – I’ll get off of my soapbox now.

  19. JoeyA

Is Dante catching Karter? That could be a future pitcher catcher tandem. In 15-20 years, it would be cool to say we saw those two playing when they were six. Sign them both NOW. I’m sure all it would take is some candy and two Wii’s.

  20. Steph

    Tabata’s married as well.

  21. JoeyA

    Luthien-
waiting till you got married went out the door when marriage was exploited on TV reality series like The Bachelor. Marriage is a joke these days. Look at Hollywood.

  22. TKinDC

    JoeyA -

Exactly – especially since we missed out on the Pena boys in the past couple of years.

  23. Sara

whatever woman had these dude’s babies are pretty smart…lots of money coming their way one day. remember not everyone believes in waiting until married, this isn’t the old days!!
I am just surprised there isn’t a little Jeter running around somewhere!

  24. Luthien

JoeyA, can’t argue with you there. Again, call me old fashioned (even though I’m 21), but the over sexualization of our society probably hasn’t helped either. I’d still be willing to bet there are quite a few who still believe in waiting until marriage though.

  25. Scorpio

Alot of bb players have children without being married. Farnsy too, I read somewhere.

I think Jeter’s the smartest of the bunch. He’ll probably wait till his baseball days are over before getting hitched. Saves him aggravation, controversy and distraction. He can go out with whomever he wants and no one can say anything cause he’s single. Also if he should get married and if it fails, the spouse cannot sue for his millions b/c they married after his playing days! Smart cookie that Captain.

  26. Dr. Cox

Jeter can also tap any girl he feels like because he is a god among men.

  27. William Buckner

little jeter, haha. i’m picturing a mini version. bad hair line, can’t move to his left. inside out swing with no power.

    i kid cause i love.

  28. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 12 )

I blame women in general they are so seductive

  29. Laura

“I am just surprised there isn’t a little Jeter running around somewhere!”

    That we know of.

  30. Sara

Scorpio..I 100% agree with you on all of that!

  31. Laura

“I blame women in general they are so seductive”

This made me laugh. Thanks. I needed a pick me up today.

  32. TKinDC

“I am just surprised there isn’t a little Jeter running around somewhere!”

I would not be shocked if there was a mini-Jete in the world. Jeter is so image conscious that we probably wouldn’t know if there was or wasn’t.

  33. JoeyA

I’m sure there are and I don’t knock waiting until you are married. I’m just saying, given where society is today, not waiting until marriage is almost as common and not frowned upon these days.

  34. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 12 )

“This made me laugh. Thanks. I needed a pick me up today.”

no problem ;) btw anyone know if Carl Pavano has a kid :)

  35. Laura

A friend of mine told me that she thinks Jeter is gay. I beat the crap out of her and threw her out of my house. It’s sacrilege, I tell you! Sacrilege!!

  36. pat

That doesn’t seem like such a big turn out, just the usual suspects.

Joba’s son appeared to be about 2 in the pic I saw.

  37. Steph

If Carl Pavano has a kid, I wouldn’t doubt that it was a crystal figurine or something. Or made of balsa.

  38. Fran

I am not surprised that Joba is there for batting practice. He said on YESterdays that he is a better hitter than pitcher. He loves to hit. Maybe he can pinch hit like Micah Owings does for the DBacks,

  39. Laura

“btw anyone know if Carl Pavano has a kid”

I doubt it. We would have heard about the injury he suffered creating the poor creature. I should he would have strained something in the process.

  40. Sara

Laura, what would the big deal be if he was??

  41. Steph

If Joba can hit anywhere as well as he can pitch, I might be willing to let him take a hack once in a while…but I’d be worried about him getting injured, of course.

  42. Laura

“I should he would have strained something in the process.”

Okay, I’m 100% sure that his is not English. It should have read “I’m sure he would have strained something in the process”. I’ve got to learn to type slower.

  43. TKinDC

Carl Pavano is one of millions that dated Allysa Milano right?

(I’m sure the fact they are both named after Italian cities brought them together)

Also, wasn’t there a woman in his Ferrari when he wrecked it and then lied about it?

He may be a POS as an athlete, but he is still a player.

  44. Steph

Laura-maybe that’s where his rear end injury was incurred…oh dear. Images. I think I need to go gouge my eyes or something now.

  45. Laura

“Laura, what would the big deal be if he was??”

It would mean that all of my years of fantasizing about him would have been for naught!!!

Actually, it wouldn’t bother me a bit. It has absolutely nothing to do with his playing skills nor does it impact his legacy. Just my dreams at night.

    :p

  46. pat

“A friend of mine told me that she thinks Jeter is gay.”

Has she seen his wardrobe and his hairstyle?

  47. Steph

Yeah, he dated Milano and he was dating some model when his car hydroplaned. I remember him leaving ST last year to go be with her about something.

  48. mel

Melky has a kid? I thought Melky was like 17 or something.

Kyle has a mixed family. Stone is his kid, but his fiance has kids from a previous relationship.

I still love the Yankees wives skit on SNL.

  49. ham fighter

luthien, the 1940’s called and they’re recruiting heavily, something about a big die-off.

  50. Laura

“Yeah, he dated Milano and he was dating some model when his car hydroplaned. I remember him leaving ST last year to go be with her about something.”

This shouldn’t surprise anyone. The guy got $40mil in the bank for essentially doing nothing. Some women find that attractive in a man. I don’t. I actually like my men to have to work for a living.

  51. Steph

I definitely like a man who works or is at least going to college…money’s nice, but it’s definitely not everything. Especially in a lazy person.

  52. Sara

Well don’t worry Laura… i don’t think he is but i have heard that you may not want to get to close…rumors abound that he has the herps.

  53. William Buckner

What happened to this blog? Are we skipping the game tonight for Sex and the City? Pete needs to post something baseball related PDQ.

  54. TKinDC

“luthien, the 1940’s called and they’re recruiting heavily, something about a big die-off.”

    YIKES!

HF dropping the gloves on a Friday afternoon.

    8)

  55. Kill-Schill(ing)

The Yankees should worry less about the presence of candy in their clubhouse and more about the presence of condoms, it would seem.

Jeter’s about a gay as Bill Clinton. Only Jeter, thank god, has better taste in paramours.

  56. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 12 )

my god now add Tim McCarver to the please SHUT UP AND MIND YOUR BUSINESS !

  57. mel

    I don’t think Pavano has a kid, he doesn’t have the ba**s.

  58. mel

Just heard a Jose Guillen radio rant. Called them kids, call them losers. Ouch! Wasn’t he suspended for PEDs?

  59. mel

Joba’s getting advice from Clemens via text!

  60. ham fighter

just kidding luthien, i was born in the 50’s (just barely) so i better learn to snap it shut sometimes.

  61. Steph

Guillen called himself out as well. He went off on the team’s performance and said he was just as guilty of being lazy and not playing well.

Yeah, he was suspended, but those suspensions got revoked.

  62. randy l

i think peter will just skip the cute kid observation next time for unmarried players.

  63. ham fighter

was it guillen who went after fans with a folding chair a couple years ago in L.A.?

  64. Steph

I think that was Milton Bradley…but then again, he has so many tantrums, it’s hard to keep those straight. I remember Bradley tossing bats and balls on the field during one of his incidents…and I remember a Rangers reliever tossing a folding chair into the stands.

  65. Sam

    OLD PEOPLE = ANNOYING

“OMGZ HE IS NOT MARRIEZ AND HE HAS A LITTTLE BOYz, OH NOES’!!!!!

  66. Dr Evil

    …. riiiight.

  67. Wolf In Pinstripes

I remember hearing about Joba’s kid last year when he came up to pitch in NY . It was mixed in with all the info about his dad.

On the subject of kids, and regarding the Mariah Carey clip pete posted yesterday – I was talking to some friends about it and we started talking about what kind of kids she and Jeter would have had if they had stayed together back in the day. I said they would have had a girl that grew up to be the first woman in pro ball (Jeter’s genes) …. and the best butt ever seen in a pair of doubleknit baseball pants (Carey’s jeans genes).

  68. Jeter's Future Wife

well this is certainly a news flash Pete! Joba has a kid??? wonder where the baby’s mama is and when is she cashing in?? Hope she’s not quite as disgruntled as 50-Cent’s baby’s mama, for the love of God!

  69. Nondy

Lets hope Karter has more class than his dad !

  70. Today's Burning Question

What good will come of Betemit taking extra batting practice ? What would it accomplish ? He’s as good now as he will ever get.

  71. Boston Dave

Was Karter named with consideration for Clemens’ kids or for the same reason?

  72. Terry #1

    “Karter

    :)

Let me guess: he names his kids with a “K” just like Roger, right?

  73. LadyBug626

What these guys do behind closed doors in none of your business. And they’re no better or worse than the rest of adults in our country. Personally, it maybe in the best interest that some athletes aren’t married. The divorce rate is 50% for us average joes, but MUCH HIGHER in the sports world.

At lease give Joba some credit for being an active part of his child’s life (unlike some players just cut a support check every month). Also, we don’t know the relationship between Joba & the mother of his child – maybe they’re on the road to marriage, maybe there’s a good reason why she’s staying in Nebraska. Who knows. But it shouldn’t matter because its not our concern.

  74. LadyBug626

BTW, I guess only the NY folks knew about Joba’s son – he was on YESterdays and the kid is cute. The boy did look a bit native american so I wonder if his mother is (I know Joba has close ties to his ancestral tribe in NE)

  75. JohnM

Does this side session line him up for Monday or Tuesday?

  76. GreenBeret7

Ham, that chair incident in Oakland was a Ranger’s pitcher. I think it was a misunderstanding. He thought she needed an extra chair since she was squeezed into only two seats and looked uncomfortable.

  77. murphydog

Give props to Jetes for knowing himself and knowing he isn’t ready to settle down.

He comes from a stable, intact family and my guess is that he wants to be 100% available as a husband and father. While he’s playing baseball, he’s devoted 100% to the game and maybe to him that conflicts with family obligations. He’ll settle down closer to retirement with Miss America, some very beautiful woman who wants to help end world hunger or whatever the beauty contestants usually say.

  78. GreenBeret7

Jeter and beauty contest winners have much in common. The beauty contest winners want world peace and Jeter wants pieces from around the world.

  79. gigi

  80. RustyJohn

I’m sure Luthien has never had any sexual relations before, hence his eagerness to throw rocks since he doesn’t live in a glass house.

Yes, much better to compel a shotgun marriage when someone is pregnant those always turn out well, or abort if not married.

As someone who is not married and has a kid who I take care of better than my father took care of me, and have a better relationship with the child’s mother than my father ever had with my mother, I would give some of the judgmental folks here some advice to just shut-up.

Since marriage is nothing but a contractual business arrangement (I know folks like to put the “love” spin or religious underpinnings on to things), the fact that they are married or not married is really nobody’s business.

As a divorce attorney though, I would highly recommend that those of you who are into that sort of thing continue to get married so the 50%+ of you who get divorced provide me with regular work. Thank you.

  81. Nick in SF

I only had time to skim this thread. So Melky is Joba’s son? Is that what it’s about?
