Blackburn OK, meets with Abreu

No reason to belabor a nondescript game like that. But this is worth passing along:

Nick Blackburn returned to the Metrodome after getting checked out and met with Bobby Abreu after the game. Abreu was relieved to see the Minnesota pitcher was OK after being hit with that line drive.

“I was scared,” Abreu said. “You never want to see something like that.”

Blackburn, remarkably, came away with a fat lip and bruised nose. He broke no bones and has all his teeth.

The way it looked when he laid out right after being hit had to scare the bejesus out of Abreu. I think that hit took Abreu out of the game. He was really shaken up by it.

That goodness nothing was broken. It looked scary.

Thank God he was okay! It looked pretty serious when it happened…

Luckily, for the most part, pitchers do seem to avoid serious injury due to batted balls…

Don’t know whether to attribute that to luck or athleticism or a combination of both…

Speaking of Abreu–Pete, we saw you during Bobby’s postgame interview on YES. You looked quite serious!

Abreu was so upset, you could see it. And you cold really tell his concern was totally genuine – especially in his post-game interview. Don’t worry bobby, we all know you didn’t mean to do it and would never do something like that on purpose. Shake it off for tomrrow’s game. He’s ok :)

    Great news.

I saw a pitcher get hit square in the face in an intramural coed softball game in high school. Teeth flew out of her mouth. Shudder.

That is amazing that nothing was broken. Blackburn is one tough hombre! I definitely thought he was at least knocked out cold, until I saw him get right up. If I were him, I’d strut out to the mound like Ric Flair for my next start. The way that ball was rocketed, Blackburn is indestructable. He’s got my respect…

I didn’t even see the play (from all accounts I’m lucky). From the reports it made me think of Ryan Thompson’s hard smash off the face of the Sox Bryce Fiore back in late 2000 I believe. I’m glad this kid turned out to be okay. I hope Bobby’s okay too mentally.
