Austin Jackson was 3 for 5 with two doubles and seven (that’s right, seven) RBI for Trenton today in a 9-3 victory against New Britain.

Oh, and he’s 21.

Great news with A-Jack for sure.

I wish Tabata would grow up and they can be a force in SWB next year together.

Austin had another one of those uhoh here he comes games, he certainly has a chance to be an outstanding player in the future. Can’t wait to see him roaming CF possibly in 09′ or 2010

  3. jay destro June 1st, 2008 at 6:03 pm

I caught some of jackson at last thursday’s thunder game. Very exciting player to watch. A aaa promotion after the break would be great to see.

  4. Mike June 1st, 2008 at 6:03 pm

Will we see him in the bigs next year as the fourth outfielder, and eventually taking over CF with Melky sliding over to left?

  5. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 12 ) June 1st, 2008 at 6:08 pm

jay I’d rather he finish out AA this year, if he goes to AAA he has to tear the Eastern League first, but before today the leader in EL RBI Dan Murphy w/ 41(Mets) saw Jackson w/ 25 RBI in yesterday afternoon 24 hrs. later he has 33 RBI. This kid is gonna be a problem.

  6. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 12 ) June 1st, 2008 at 6:09 pm

    in yesterday afternoon’s boxscore. *

  7. RhapsodyInBlue June 1st, 2008 at 6:13 pm

If I’m not mistaken, this is the second games within a few weeks that Jackson has had 7 RBIs.

  8. jason June 1st, 2008 at 6:14 pm

i’m very excited about Jackson also but the reality is that he needs at least this year and next in the minors. He just needs time to develop physically and mentally. The last thing we need to do is rush him. I also think Tabata is ay least 3 years away.

  9. thunderfangabe June 1st, 2008 at 6:15 pm

A-Jack is definitely a fun guy to watch.

  10. bronxbomber77 (from worst to first in 2008!) June 1st, 2008 at 6:16 pm

    Good for Austin Jackson.

With what deals free agent OF are getting signed to in this day and age (Soriano, though I liek him, and his 8-yr/$136 deal come to mind), its nice knowing there is plenty of talented OF depth in this organization’s minor league system.

  11. thunderfangabe June 1st, 2008 at 6:17 pm

Jackson had 7 vs. Reading (5/21).

  12. CB June 1st, 2008 at 6:18 pm

Jackson has had a good season in AA, especially for a 21 year old playing against older competition.

But he hasn’t had a great season and it’s still much too early to start projecting his arrival in the major leagues.

Unless he goes on the same kind of massive tear he did last year in high A ball he needs to stay in AA all year. AA is a really key point in player development and its not one that you just blow through as a 21 year old unless you are at the uber-elite Jay Bruce prospect level.

Jackson is having a nice season. Good to see that he had a terrific game.

But there’s very little chance he’ll be ready for 2009 in the major leagues and even 2010 is uncertain.

Jackson’t shown he can handle AA but hasn’t thrived there. That’s really what you hope to see from a prospect if they are going to move fast up to the major leagues.

The most encouraging part of his season so far isn’t his BA, RBI’s or OBP. It’s the improved plate discipline he’s shown (47K:30BB). You hope that as he continues staying patient at the plate he’ll hit for more power.

We’ll see. He’s very talented but still raw. He’s not the kind of guy you push too hard. You have to wait and hope his baseball skills continue to catch up to his athletic talent.

  13. Steve June 1st, 2008 at 6:18 pm

The Melk man better start making his rounds . . . . .

Seriously, this is a big year for Melky. They’re going to find out if he can hit enough to keep his CF job on this team. His current line of .265/.319/.719 isn’t going to cut it. He’ll have to hit MUCH more if he plans on taking over for Abreu in RF or Damon in LF.

Personally, I don’t think he’s going to do it.

  14. thunderfangabe June 1st, 2008 at 6:20 pm

Former Thunder reliever Charlie Manning is in his 2nd inning of work for the Nats vs. the D-Backs.

  15. Joe Monte June 1st, 2008 at 6:23 pm

We’ll be seeing A Jack at the Futures Game this year if he continues with his development.

  16. george June 1st, 2008 at 6:32 pm

if he puts up a run of numbers similar to his stats in tampa last year, he could be up here come August. though only if there’s an opening, a la Melky’s opportunity in 2006.

  17. stuart June 1st, 2008 at 6:33 pm

    russ got done with yugio????

being the loser you are we can count on reading your stupidity after a loss.

    sorry about fat papi’s wrist.

want to bet your allowance your rays do not finish higher then the yanks?? If the answer is yes since your mommy gives you $2 a week how much do you want to bet? you might as well bet it before the bullies take it away from you at recess for the 5th graders.

russ you are a loser.. I invision what you look like in person, man it is scary and sad…

  18. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 12 ) June 1st, 2008 at 6:34 pm

Steve I’m more concerned w/ Robi Cano

    I’ll post this again

Robi Cano has 1,621 ABs prior to today in 352 ABs on 0-0 he’s batting .348/.347/.523 w/ an OPS of .870 on the first pitch, that’s is how talented he is, but someone needs to tell him to cut this shhhh…

In 805 ABs after the 0-1 count his AB ends w/ this line .273/.294/.418 w/ a .712 OPS he has 161 stikeouts and 16 walks w/ this type of AB. So out of his 227 MLB career strikeouts around 71 % of time it’s forced by Robi.

    What will it take

A few thing on Robinson Cano, guess what Robi this your life unless you change it.

Robi Cano has 1,621 ABs prior to today in 352 ABs on 0-0 he’s batting .348/.347/.523 w/ an OPS of .870 on the first pitch, that’s is how talented he is, but someone needs to tell him to cut this shhhh…

On 172 ABs w/ the count 0-2 Robi is batting .187/.193/.243 w/ an OPS of .436 resulting w/ 77 strikeouts on that count alone in his 4 yr. young career

In 302 ABs Robi your 0-2 counts should you live to see more pitches have led you to 123 K’s and 6 BB you’re batting

.207/.241/.246 w/ an OPS of .487 THAT WILL BE THE REST OF HIS CAREER IF HE DOESN’T CHANGE :x

  19. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 12 ) June 1st, 2008 at 6:35 pm

^^^ copy and pasted the first part twice read the 2nd bolded parts Lohud

  20. Patrick Bateman June 1st, 2008 at 6:37 pm

Melky is going to “slide” over to left field. He doesn’t have to offensive tools to be a corner outfielder.

  21. Patrick Bateman June 1st, 2008 at 6:37 pm

edit, that should say “isn’t going to slide over”

  22. Patrick Bateman June 1st, 2008 at 6:38 pm

“Just read that Joba will be limited to 65-70 pitches in his first start. Since he throws over 20 pitches an inning, that will be a 4 inning start for Joba…..”

It will be 1 more inning than Hughes and Kennedy have been able to put up.

  23. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 12 ) June 1st, 2008 at 6:39 pm

no russ m that means if he throws strikes he might get to the 6th inning. Your forgetting some of those pitches may result in quick ground outs, Joba in AA and A ball had a strick 75-80 pitch limit and he’d get into the 6th on that alone.

  24. miggs June 1st, 2008 at 6:41 pm

Brandon you’re beating a dead horse with this Cano thing.

You’ve posted those stats like 4 times. Those projected career numbers are ridiculously low and unrealistic. A career OPS of .487? Come on.

The guy hit .330 2 years ago, .300 again last year, and is 24 years old. He’s had a bad start to the year, let’s not make it out like his career is over.

  25. CB June 1st, 2008 at 6:42 pm

“We’ll be seeing A Jack at the Futures Game this year if he continues with his development.”

I would be surprised to see Jackson make it to the Futures Game this year. I don’t think those are realistic expectations. There are several other OF prospects in the minors ahead of him.

The only reason I could even see it happening has more to do with the current state of outfielders in the minor leagues – it’s not very good. There’s been a huge movement of the most talented outfielders in the minors to the majors (Jay Bruce, Justin Upton) and top OF prospects having poor to mediocre seasons (Colby Rasmus).

Last year on the US squad they took 5 oufielders. This year I’d have to guess that Jason Heyward, Matt LaPorta and Andrew McCutchen will make it. Cameron Maybin and Travis Synder are having so-so years but hitting for more power than Jackson and are considered better prospects.

Jackson is a very good prospect. He’s not an elite prospect yet and while his season has been encouraging it’s not the kind of production that would move him into that next strata of talent.

  26. Joe Schmoe 2 June 1st, 2008 at 6:46 pm

    That’s my boy right there.

That’s why AJax is my favorite prospect.

  27. Jorge Steinbrenner (the long lost third brother) June 1st, 2008 at 6:48 pm

It’d be nice to see some of the positional talent we’ve got in the minors emerge in the next 2-4 years. While the pitching certainly is both here and on the verge of getting here, we continue to need to get younger on the field. I feel that, without building that new core, we’re still going to be looking for spare parts and potentially falling short in the meantime.

  28. Jorge Steinbrenner (the long lost third brother) June 1st, 2008 at 6:50 pm

    russ m,

you’re right, but not for the same reasons. Ortiz’s wrist shouldn’t matter because what should matter to Yankee fans is what the Yankees do. i’ve never cared less about what the Sox are doing than I have this year. there’s enough interesting stuff going on within this organization, win or lose, that it’s enough to keep my attention. the Sox can do whatever. the natural order of things will catch up with them soon.

  29. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 12 ) June 1st, 2008 at 6:50 pm

miggs who’s saying his career is over ? he’s had 1,621 ABs , I posted how in that 4 yr. period he’s hurt himself. Think about a 4 yrs. into his career and he has 172 ABs w/ an 0-2 count mostly forced by him swinging at first pitches, he gets down to 0-2 and his results are not good after that. It’s not beating him up it’s stating the obvious.

Just in 2008 prior to today he has 12 AB w/ an 0-2 count that results him hitting .083/.083/.083 and an OPS of .167 and 5 K’s, he has 24 AB after his 0-2 counts that results 9 K’s, 3 BB his statline .167/.259/.333 an OPS of .692, again a superstar if he can adjust his patience in his AB.

  30. Nick June 1st, 2008 at 6:54 pm

Go figure. The Rays with (6) walkoff wins. OUCH !

  31. Jeff June 1st, 2008 at 6:57 pm

So the footsteps are still kinda far away? I was hoping for a shakeup maybe see what if anything they can get for damon and play gardner in the outfield.

  32. CB June 1st, 2008 at 6:59 pm

    Brandon,

There is saying in statistics that applies to what you’re doing looking at Cano’s at bats:

    Correlation is not causality.

A lot of number crunching in baseball statistics looks to see how two issues are correlate and then attribute one as the cause of others. This happens all the time – even Bill James and guys at Baseball Prospectus do this a lot.

Not saying your completely off with Cano. But your conclusions go way past what the numbers support.

  33. Bob June 1st, 2008 at 7:00 pm

All Cano needs is a good kick in the butt.

Next time he swings at the first pitch, grounds out and drops his head and pouts, Girardi should take him out of the game and let him sit for a week.

For Christ’s sake dude, grow the hell up.

  34. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 12 ) June 1st, 2008 at 7:06 pm

CB is it safe to say those numbers show lack of patience holding him from being what he should be ?

Two things after reading that Austin Jackson line I hope the Yankees do not do what they did w/ Melky in 05′ bringing him straight up from Trenton. Just let him finish in AA as for Tabata do not trade this asset.

Cashman Threets and Pena don’t sleep on those 2

Anyway I’ll be back later people stay out of trouble. ;)

  35. CB June 1st, 2008 at 7:11 pm

“is it safe to say those numbers show lack of patience holding him from being what he should be ?”

Not really. Or more specifically – not necessarily.

The yankees are not going to rush Austin Jackson. They already have 4 veteran outfielders and Brett Gardner in AAA. They aren’t in the same situation they were when they rushed up Melky.

They are not going to trade Tabata. They aren’t just going to sell low on a guy who they’ve invested so much time in and whose talent they believe in.

  36. bphill June 1st, 2008 at 7:19 pm

is this the spark jacoby ellsbury was for the sox?

  37. YankeeVIP June 1st, 2008 at 7:26 pm

i havnt read much of ajax. does he have a better arm then melky? i really like melky and hoppe the yanks hold on for a while with him…. perhaps even move him out of the 9spot, i feel that is hurting him.

i wonder how much larry bowa not being around is affecting CMW and Cano.. both who are in slumps and were close with Bowa.

  38. Dynasty is Destiny! June 1st, 2008 at 7:28 pm

“Your forgetting some of those pitches may result in quick ground outs, Joba in AA and A ball had a strick 75-80 pitch limit and he’d get into the 6th on that alone.”

It seems very unlikely he’d make it to the 6th on such a strict pitch count…I’m sure they’ll be pleased and so should we, if he pitches well-regardless of how far he goes…

If he makes it through 5 full, I’d be surprised…what’s most important, is that he has command of all his pitches…

It’s only his first start and we must be patient…

    GO YANKS!!!!|

  39. rconn23 June 1st, 2008 at 7:32 pm

You don’t want to rush Jackson. It’s encouraging that his plate discipline continues to grow. But he won’t be up to the majors at 2010 at the earliest, and that’s they way it should be.

Gardner on the other hand is ready to go. He has a .406 OBP. in AAA.

  40. canocabrera June 1st, 2008 at 7:48 pm

We should trade him and get some pitching, we already have a center fielder.

  41. rconn23 June 1st, 2008 at 7:59 pm

“We should trade him and get some pitching, we already have a center fielder.”

Melky is just a placeholder in CF until Jackson is ready.

  42. Yankee lover June 1st, 2008 at 8:08 pm

placeholder?? I thought that Melky was “too valuable” to trade for Santana, remember?

  43. Rodney June 1st, 2008 at 8:09 pm

    A-Jack in LF

    Gardner in CF

  44. a moose June 1st, 2008 at 8:18 pm

    melky sucks.

  45. hippo June 1st, 2008 at 8:44 pm

I hope the organization doesnt feel that way about Melky as he Cashman claimed Melky was too valuable to trade for Santana

  46. canocabrera June 1st, 2008 at 9:04 pm

Melky is not a placeholder, I hope this kid is just hype like Kei Igawa.

  47. Old Ranger June 1st, 2008 at 9:07 pm

Besides Gardner, there is Justin, both of whom are ready…and willing. I saw Eric Duncan (in Rochester) for the last couple days, he is much better then last year, a lot better. If there is a need to get another 1st baseman, they couldn’t do much better right now…good flexibility around the bag and his D/hitting has improved greatly.
I still like Brett and what he can bring to the table. Just wish there was a way to get him on the team. Maybe they call him up at the roster expansion, hope so.

  48. Jimmy June 1st, 2008 at 9:10 pm

Can people stop calling him A-Jack?

    Thanks in advance.

  49. bphill June 1st, 2008 at 9:17 pm

I think Austin will surpass Melky in talent easily. I wouldn’t mind seeing a Melky, Austin, Bobby outfield in the future.

I think that Johnny is in a tough spot with Matsui doing great at DH along with Giambi doing great at DH/1B.

Jonny Signed a 4 year deal in 2006, that means his contract will be up in 2010

I’m sure that in 2 years, Johnny will not be as good as he is now, and he will not be starting.

  50. yankee lover June 1st, 2008 at 9:20 pm

Damon is having a fine year. He does a lot of things that helps win ballgames

  51. PJH June 1st, 2008 at 9:43 pm

If he is anything like Hughes and Kennedy trade him when he has value.

  52. thunderfangabe June 1st, 2008 at 9:44 pm

“Can people stop calling him A-Jack?

    Thanks in advance.”

Mike Ashmore of Thunder Thoughts did a Q & A w/ the Thunder players based on questions from readers/fans. Austin said his favorite nickname is A-Jack. So if he has no problem with it, then you shouldn’t either.

  53. thunderfangabe June 1st, 2008 at 9:51 pm

Here is the specific text from Thunder Thoughts (4/26)

“Bonus answer: Jackson told me his preferred nickname is A-Jack.”

  54. Ashish Skaria June 1st, 2008 at 10:11 pm

    Jimmy,
In terms of nicknames, Austin prefers to be called A-Jack.

  55. Tony June 1st, 2008 at 10:14 pm

Austin is the centerfielder of the future easily based on his pure athleticism. I have heard comparisons to grady sizemore. Melky and Gardner may not have the tools to play the corners but we can win games with gardners speed and melkys throwing arm. With Tabata coming up also our outfield looks stacked.I relly like the farm system. I hope austin romine can eventually take over catcher for jorgie and jesus montero can convert to first base. Maybe this is wishful thinking that they all pan out but tell me what you guys think

  56. bigjf June 1st, 2008 at 10:26 pm

He better do well, otherwise his new nickname will be “A-Jack-ass.”

Seriously, people are so quick to turn on Melky. I don’t think he’s going anywhere. He has his blunders in the field at times, like today, but overall he plays a brilliant CF. After Damon and Matsui’s contracts are up after next year, Melky will still be here as a starter (whether he finds his way on the bench between then or not). Perhaps he’s not an all-star, but he is a capable 9-hitter. He gets his share of hot streaks, too.

I’m rooting for our kids to do well like everyone else, but let’s not forget that Melky is still in that group, especially since he didn’t get a nice contract yet. Cano on the other hand…my patience is wearing a bit. I’m maybe 2 more first pitch groundball outs away from losing it!

  57. bigjf June 1st, 2008 at 10:29 pm

bphil, Damon’s contract is up after 2009.

  58. JT June 1st, 2008 at 11:01 pm

Austin wants to be called A-Jack. He has the speed and arm to cover centerfield with ease. A-Jack has good plate discipline and his power will develop as he gets better than he is already He reminds me of Soriano at the plate, very similar stance. Plus he can steal bases. And he has a good attitude! Can’t wait to see him in the new stadium.

  59. Global Warming June 2nd, 2008 at 1:05 am

I cannot wait til Melky is outta here/on the bench and Gardner and Action JAckson are roaming the OF.

  60. Ashish Skaria June 2nd, 2008 at 1:09 am

Tony, we share the same views. I hope other Yankee fans come around to having Jesus play first and Romine man the catching position after Jorgie.

  61. Count of Montefusco June 2nd, 2008 at 11:01 am

No no no no no no “A-Jack”!

It’s a good thing baseball players don’t get to pick their own nicknames, or we’d have been deprived of “Joltin’ Joe,” “The Splendid Splinter,” etc.

PLEASE put an end to these lazy, colorless 1st initial-last name hybrids. We can impose ACTION JACKSON on him now, he’ll thank us later when he’s all grown up.
