Pitchers taking their hacks

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Jun 02, 2008 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

The pitchers are taking BP this afternoon. Joe Girardi took a few hacks before the players got on the field.

The Moose, as you might expect, is getting every bunt down. he hits lefty. Because he’s pitching tonight, Andy Pettitte is excempt from the workout. No sign of Joba, either. But Ross Ohlendorf is out there. Chris Britton, too.

UPDATE, 3:18 p.m.: Nobody has hit one out yet. But Wang bounced one off the warning track. Britton can hit. Looks like Matt Stairs. Maybe he can play some first since they don’t need him to pitch.

    Pete,

did the Yanks send Joba home early being that they won’t get back home until early this morning?

  2. Laura June 2nd, 2008 at 3:03 pm

Can we add Girardi to the roster? We could use the help!

  3. bphill June 2nd, 2008 at 3:12 pm

interesting article from MLB Trade rumors here.

yankees are interested in Brian Fuentes and Damaso Marte…

what would you guys give up for them?

    Tabata comes to my mind.

  4. Elizabeth--FarnsWORTH IT June 2nd, 2008 at 3:13 pm

    How’d Girardi look?

  5. eric June 2nd, 2008 at 3:15 pm

Tabata for two NL, leftys with no good secondary pitch on the downward slope of their careers? Might as well trade him for a cadaver.

  6. yankeefan91 June 2nd, 2008 at 3:17 pm

pete u should take some video

  7. gayle June 2nd, 2008 at 3:19 pm

No surprise as Pete says about Moose. He talks about hitting for a bit in the Feinsand book and how he takes it seriously for the time he has to do it.IN reading last night yes I know it has taken me a while but other things have come up he has some great quotes about the MIA pitcher Carl Pavano especially in response to the first offer the Yankees gave him a few years ago it really is priceless.

“The Moose, as you might expect, is getting every bunt down.”

Should come in handy when he replaces El Duque next year in the Mets rotation.

  9. Patrick (the good one) June 2nd, 2008 at 3:20 pm

    Tabata comes to my mind.

Yeah lets trade the second best position prospect in the minors for half a season of reliever in his 30s that has never pitched outside of the NL west (apart from 11 innings in seattle).

  10. Hideki Balboni June 2nd, 2008 at 3:23 pm

Why do the Yankees continue to treat Joba differently than other pitchers? Is he more important than the team?

  11. Joe Schmoe 2 June 2nd, 2008 at 3:23 pm

Pete, you really don’t like Britton, do you.

  12. Elizabeth--FarnsWORTH IT June 2nd, 2008 at 3:24 pm

Hideki–what are you talking about? He has to pitch tomorrow. He might not even be in Minn. It’s not uncommon for the following day’s pitcher to head back home early.

  13. jennifer June 2nd, 2008 at 3:24 pm

Was Joe hitting the ball? Maybe he can play first?

Joba must be climbing the walls!!!

  14. bphill June 2nd, 2008 at 3:25 pm

Tabata comes to my mind because his attitude sucks and he will not be in the Yankee organization for a long time.

  15. tony June 2nd, 2008 at 3:25 pm

Tabata is our 2nd best position prospect????

  16. S.o.S.27 June 2nd, 2008 at 3:25 pm

“Yeah lets trade the second best position prospect in the minors for half a season of reliever in his 30s that has never pitched outside of the NL west (apart from 11 innings in seattle).”

    Patrick,
I agree with you on not trading him for that. But he came up and was compared to Manny. He had wrist problem last year and so far this year he has had a power outage(1 HOMER). Thats not including some in house problems. IMO if we can package him up with a pitcher and get back a young stud first baseman. Id pull the trigger.

  17. Fredo Corleone June 2nd, 2008 at 3:26 pm

    Was Joe hitting the ball?

Couldn’t hit as a player. Doubt he can hit as a manager either. Bet he could still catch a decent game though.

  18. S.o.S.27 June 2nd, 2008 at 3:27 pm

    from the last thread.
What do you guys think about trying to get Juan Rivera back? The Angels are loaded in the outfield and we might need a right fielder after this year. I cant see Abreu coming back in any way. If he has a good year. He will get much more out there. If he fails. Well he’s done here as well. Rivera has a great glove, good bat with some power and can be there till one of our minor leaguers are ready. Thoughts? It shouldnt cost us much to get him. Being he just came of an injury and they dont have much use for him.

  19. Elizabeth--FarnsWORTH IT June 2nd, 2008 at 3:30 pm

Fredo–he wasn’t a HORRIBLE hitter, but, you’re right, he was a hell of an asset behind the dish.

  20. gayle June 2nd, 2008 at 3:30 pm

oops meant feinstein book duh my mind is bad today

  21. TurnTwo June 2nd, 2008 at 3:33 pm

“What do you guys think about trying to get Juan Rivera back?”

no chance. that broken leg he suffered did just about everything to effectively end his productive playing days.

  22. CB June 2nd, 2008 at 3:34 pm

Tabata’s trade value is at an all time low right now. You don’t trade guys by selling cheap.

In 4 years he’ll be 23. No one has any idea what his maturity and attitude will be then. No one has ever said Tabata was a bad guy, like a Delmon Young.

It’s not Tabata’s fault that some people made ridiculous comparisons between him and Manny, a historically great right handed hitter.

They’re not just going to trade him for a middle reliever. That’s a bad move. No one has any idea exactly what’s going on with him right now and like a lot of 19 year olds he could snap out of this funk very quickly.

  23. bphill June 2nd, 2008 at 3:34 pm

    SOS27…
I completley disagree with you. I think Abreu has been a great bat for us and really been an example for young hitters. I think Rivera is not even close to Abreu in skill.

  24. eric June 2nd, 2008 at 3:34 pm

trading tabata for anything other than as part of a package for a front line starter would be horrific baseball management.look at Tabata’s minor league stats, you don’t give up on a guy whose been excellent at every level thus far.

Oh yea, Brian Fluentes?- he had a 9.82 era in the world series. 3.7 6 4 2 1.

  25. Fredo Corleone June 2nd, 2008 at 3:38 pm

“trading tabata for anything other than as part of a package for a front line starter would be horrific baseball management.look at Tabata’s minor league stats, you don’t give up on a guy whose been excellent at every level thus far.”

Good point, but Tabata is a guy who has NOT been excellent at ANY level thus far.

  26. bphill June 2nd, 2008 at 3:43 pm

Tabata and Marquez might land us a good deal.

  27. S.o.S.27 June 2nd, 2008 at 3:43 pm

    bphill,
I didnt say he is better than Abreu. I was saying that Abreu will bet someone to overpay for him if he has a good year(Mets). He’s not worth a 4 year deal. If he bombs this year. Than he wouldnt be here either. We need a right fielder to fill in till guys like Ajax and Gardner etc. are ready.

  28. eric June 2nd, 2008 at 3:44 pm

    i beg to differ.

    age 16– .314 .382 .417 799
    age 17- .298 .377 .420 797
    age 18- .307 .371 .392 763

    those are damn good #’s.

  29. bphill June 2nd, 2008 at 3:46 pm

I will agree with that. The yankees need to be wise with money here, if he is out of reach, I vote avoid him, and bring up Jackson, move Melky over. Or maybe Rivera as a rent-a-player…

  30. GreenBeret7 June 2nd, 2008 at 3:48 pm

Fredo, could the fact that “Tabata has NOT been excellent at ANY level thus far” have anything to do with the fact that he’s always 2-3 younger than his league average?

  31. JMO June 2nd, 2008 at 3:52 pm

Britton looks like Matt Stairs…since Stairs is the second coming of Pete Incaviglia, that’s pretty cool.

  32. Jeff June 2nd, 2008 at 4:05 pm

    Pete:

I’m not gonna lie, your constant middle school-esque comments of Chris Britton is just downright weird at this point. He is probably the worst pitcher on the roster, we get it, but he is still a professional ballplayer and doesn’t deserve to get mocked by people who’s greatest sport achievement is playing in a baseball game with the likes of Carl Beane.

And you chastise your commentators for being mean-spirited. Those is glass houses Peter, those in glass houses.

  33. daver June 2nd, 2008 at 4:12 pm

I don’t think that Pete is getting on Chris Britton because he has a problem with him but rather because the Yankees have not really allowed him to pitch this a lot year and he is always on the Scranton-Bronx shuttle every other week.

I don’t take Pete’s comments about Chris Britton as an attack on Chris Britton but rather a shot at the Yankees use of the poor guy.

  34. ellen June 2nd, 2008 at 5:02 pm

If you read here regularly, you’d see that Pete is not disrespecting Chris Britton. He’s making observations about how the Yankees are treating Britton – taking the shuttle back and forth to SWB, never getting used when he’s here, etc. Over the weekend, Pete opined that Britton must have Girardi’s dog held hostage, because Britton doesn’t get playing time. That’s not a knock on Britton.
