The man who would be king

Interesting story on ESPN.com on Joe Molloy, the former Steinbrenner son-in-law who once ran the Yankees.

Amazing what has happened in that family the last 20 years.

    SJ,

Have you seen Garcia pitch and is your list from the previous thread, random or some type of order?

If Garcia puts it all together rehab/maturity issues do you see him being a big part of the Yankees future plans?

    pete,
this blog rules. the amount of times you update it, and the pointed posts of a certain level of quality. you do a great job friend. you’ve really carved out a niche for yourself.

  4. Neil

    Great story.

Thoughts on the rumors of a trade for Brian Fuentes? Names being thrown around include Jackson, Tabata, Gardner, McAllister and Horne.

“Thoughts on the rumors of a trade for Brian Fuentes? Names being thrown around include Jackson, Tabata, Gardner, McAllister and Horne.”

Jackson and Tabata should be totally off the table, and Gardner/Horne are too much. I don’t know enough about McAllister to say.

  7. jay destro

If the former mrs. swindell now steinbrenner is looking for a new husband to run the team, i would take another wife, mormon style.

  8. SJ44

Who is throwing around the names for this rumored Fuentes trade?

I can’t see them trading Austin Jackson or Zach McAllister for Brian Fuentes.

Tabata? Depends how mad they are at him and what else the Rockies would add to a proposed deal.

Horne? I could see that but again, the Rockies would need to add more to the pot. In today’s baseball, you don’t trade a well regarded, older starting pitching prospect for a setup guy.

    Vader,

I saw Garcia pitch prior to his elbow surgery and I thought he had a lot of promise. He was kind of an immature kid and that has always been the knock on him.

I hope to see him pitch this week.

Talent-wise, he’s at the upper echelon of Yankee starting pitching prospects.

However, there is more to pitching than just raw talent.

I’m anxious to see him this week to see if he is beginning to mature and understand that he has a great opportunity ahead of him if he works hard and applies himself.

Kontos has pitched much better after his first couple of starts. Saw an interview where he said he was giving the AA guys too much credit and not trusting his stuff.
Seems to have gained the confidence and is progressing nicely.

  10. Mike

    SJ: No one particularly important..

Tim Dierkes wrote on his blog, “The trades of Octavio Dotel and Eric Gagne last year might be comparables. Dotel required Kyle Davies, a promising pitcher who had not experienced much big league success. The Gagne package was headed by raw prospect Engel Beltre, and also included useful MLB-ready pieces in Kason Gabbard and David Murphy.”

Comments to the post included those names I mentioned.

i sat right behind the scouts and watched Kontos pitch the other day. there was alot of good, he left with the lead and struck out 5, only walked 1 i believe. he moved his fb around and was able to throw his curve for strikes.

on the downside, he tops out at 91, most fb’s were 88 and in a league where there’s not alot of power, there wear alot of balls hit to the warning track.

just one look at him, i dont know if it was typical but there were 6 scouts charting him, and all but one put thier guns down when the other guy (0-7) was pitching, even though he was consistengly at 91-92 on the fb.

  12. EricVA

It’s important to note that in the same post he said that there have been NO DISCUSSIONS about Brian Fuentes. It was just Tim speculating on possible trades the Yankees could make.

  13. Mike

EricVA: Indeed. Depending on what the Rockies ask for, it’s a move that might make sense though. Certainly Fuentes engenders more confidence in eighth inning situations than Farnsworth.

LOL – why not just buy the Reds, then you get Bruce+Votto+Volquez+Cueto+Bailey+ ;-)

“LOL – why not just buy the Reds, then you get Bruce+Votto+Volquez+Cueto+Bailey+ ;-)

I wonder how much it would cost to buy the Red Sox and demote their entire team to A ball…

  19. Brad (get me Ryan Freel)

It’s possible that LHRP Damaso Marte can be had from Pittsburgh in July seeing as John Grabow has worked well for them.

According to Cot’s contracts, Forbes listed the Red Sox’s value at 816 mil this April
The Reds were valued at 337 mil, for that matter

If all Yankee fans pitched in 2 dollars toward the cause, we could buy out the Red Sox before the start of the 2009 season. Please send checks payable to Pete A. who will be arranging their demise >=)

fay vincent on mmd right now, very interesting guy.

  24. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 12 )

Threets still in SF …. and Brayan Pena still unsigned :?

  25. mark

Keep an eye on the Yankees’ interest in Brian Fuentes, whom they have liked for years. New York needs a reliable late-inning setup man to replace Joba Chamberlain, who joins the rotation Tuesday.

  26. yankeefan91

no brayan peña has signed with the royals i had wish the yankees could had singed him hes a good hitter

  27. Laura

I’m not sure that the Rockies are ready to start a fire sale just yet (although they should be). We might see them starting to make deals after the All Star Break, but I doubt anything will be going down before then.

  28. S.o.S.27

Does anyone else cringe when Soriano is on one of his tears and Cano cant buy a streak? I know that Cano is a better fielder and hits for average. But watching Sori launch balls over the fense day in and day out. While Cano is swinging at the first pitch like he’s playing that crocket(i think thats the name)game is frustrating as hell.

    Y’s guy,
    Retro works.

  29. S.o.S.27

“Trade proposal: Jeff Karstens and $2 billion for Jay Bruce”

I say focus on Colorado and get Matt Holliday for the above proposal and we’ll throw in our big basher in Duncan.

I enjoyed reading that story. Thanks, Pete.

No considering Sori used to fall asleep at 2nd base. He complained too much about switching positions… he refused to be in the outfield. He only wanted to hit lead off.. he didn’t always run hard out of the box.

He was fun to watch but Soriano was more about Soriano than he was about the Yankees. Remember when he tried to go for 40-40?

You can ooh and aah the hr totals but in the end there are more negatives with Sori than there are with Cano.

  33. Y's Guy (ham fighter goes retro)

important to remember that soriano brought us arod, not cano.

  34. yankeefan91

oh thanks brandon i hope the yankees could get him

  35. Fredo Corleone

“Does anyone else cringe when Soriano is on one of his tears and Cano cant buy a streak?”

Can’t cringe over anything Soriano does when I know he fetched the Yankees Rodriguez.

  36. Francis The Praying Mantis

whatever happened to Erik Abreu? Never the same after he got hurt I assume…I also heard he was uncoachable.

  37. S.o.S.27

    Y’s Guy,
Im aware of who we got in return. It just kills me to see him in one of his homerun streaks. When our boy hasnt got going and is flaring at first pitches or 3-1 counts.

    Eugie,
Thats sounds like your describing Manny. Can we say Sori is being Sori?

    Trade proposal for everyone here.
What do you guys think about trying to get Juan Rivera back? The Angels are loaded in the outfield and we might need a right fielder after this year. I cant see Abreu coming back in any way. If he has a good year. He will get much more out there. If he fails. Well he’s done here as well. Rivera has a great glove, good bat with some power and can be there till one of our minor leaguers are ready. Thoughts?

  38. Francis The Praying Mantis

You know what I dont miss about Soriano…his swing and misses at pick off attempts

  39. Rob

Juan Rivera? Wasn’t he the one stealing equimpent and selling it?

  40. Francis The Praying Mantis

    ruben rivera

  41. S.o.S.27

“You know what I dont miss about Soriano…his swing and misses at pick off attempts”

lol. That was funny. But i have to say. In Cano’s eyes thats probably dead red as well.

  42. murphydog

Juan Rivera? Wasn’t he the one stealing equimpent and selling it?

    No.

  43. murphydog

Wow… nice story on Molloy. Truly it is about getting up and not about the fall. Remember “Rocky 1.”

  44. Rob

ooohhhhh Riiight. Ruben Rivera, now I Remember. I was only 15!

  45. Drew

That was a good read. I had completely forgotten about him.

  46. Annie Savoy

What a great story about Mr. Molloy. Thanks for posting the link.

  47. Art Vandelay

I know Joe Molloy is no longer with the Steinbrenner family but the fact that he had a hand in rebuilding the organization from 1991-1996 is a good reason to bring him back. And maybe Hank could go back to raising horses.

I’m living in a fantasy world with this comment but I wanted to throw this out there.
