Widespread panic grips Hub

The Yankees aren’t quite in a position to concern themselves with the Red Sox. But have you noticed the issues in Beantown?

* David Ortiz has a wrist injury that will have him out at least a month and could require surgery. Whether that’s the case or not, wrist issues are bad news for hitters.

* Josh Beckett (5-4, 4.30) hasn’t been Josh Beckett.

* Jonathan Papelbon has already given up half as many earned runs as he did all of last season. Hideki Okajima hasn’t beeen what he was in 2007, either.

* Boston, while 21-5 at Fenway Park, is 14-20 on the road.

* Hazel Mae is leaving NESN.

* High cost of gas cutting into beer purchases at Fenway. Fans now forced to stop at 17 cups.

    Hazel Mae gone?

  3. Stephen June 3rd, 2008 at 3:41 pm

…yet for all their issues, such as they are, the Red Sox get the big hits when they need them.

  4. jay destro June 3rd, 2008 at 3:43 pm

the yankees are the total anti-sox right now. even with all the problems, the sox day to day figure it out.

  5. LI Mike June 3rd, 2008 at 3:43 pm

I have a feeling hitters have gotten used to Papelbon and are able to recognize his stuff more. Though that could just be wishful thinking.

I don’t know whether to be sadder about Hazel or the beer. She always looked better after the 17th.

  7. TKinDC June 3rd, 2008 at 3:44 pm

    “Hazel Mae is leaving NESN.”

Seems like she is leaving a nice body of work behind. Can we Farnsy for her, straight up?

  8. ItalianGreco June 3rd, 2008 at 3:45 pm

LOL…17 cups. Bunch of drunks up there.

  9. William Buckner June 3rd, 2008 at 3:45 pm

Don’t forget Dice-K shoulder problems and Mike Lowell remembering he’s Mike Lowell. If there was ever a year for Toronto, B-More, and Tampa to sneak ahead, this is it.

  10. Kevin CT June 3rd, 2008 at 3:45 pm

Any Manny Ramirez is still 6 cards short of a full deck.

  11. mark June 3rd, 2008 at 3:46 pm

and they are still killing the pitiful yankees.

Depending on who’s been paying for Hazel Mae’s makeup budget, this could be addition by subtraction for NESN and their so-called Nation.

  15. Octavian June 3rd, 2008 at 3:48 pm

Is Hazel Mae really leaving NESN? This is terrible news.

  16. V June 3rd, 2008 at 3:48 pm

“and they are still killing the pitiful yankees.”

Killing? Your definition of killing is different from mine, then. Killing would be if the Sox were the Cubs and Yankees were the Padres.

  17. pat June 3rd, 2008 at 3:49 pm

A Boston sweep this series against the Rays might be good for the division in that it could level things out in the loss column rather than give Tampa more wiggle room.

  18. Victor the Predictor June 3rd, 2008 at 3:49 pm

Francona is calling on Papelbon and Okijama more than he should because of shaky middle relief and it will eventually take its toll in August and September.
Papelbon drops his arm slot on occasion which hints at possible shoulder soreness.

  19. Scorpio June 3rd, 2008 at 3:50 pm

I would enjoy the Red Sox woes more if our own issues weren’t so sad.

  20. gayle June 3rd, 2008 at 3:51 pm

I thought this Jayson STark article was interesting althou8gh I wished they had chosen someone other than Schill and Gordon but so be it

Unfortunately they are still ahead of us

  22. Chris June 3rd, 2008 at 3:52 pm

Actually Beckett is closer to what you expect this year. It was last year that was out of the ordinary. His career ERA is ~3.9, and most of that was in the NL with the Marlins. Two years ago, his ERA was over 5.

  23. Bryan June 3rd, 2008 at 3:52 pm

Don’t forget Dice K has a bum shoulder now too.

  24. Dennis-Costanza(Sox fan) June 3rd, 2008 at 3:54 pm

I liked it better when I was just worried about the Yanks. Now I have to concern myself with Tampa and Toronto..

Therapy is not getting any cheaper.

  25. saucY June 3rd, 2008 at 3:56 pm

i had no idea who Hazel Mae til i looked her up. Can we hire her to be Nancy Newman’s backup? Just to annoy sox fans some more ;)

  26. Patrick June 3rd, 2008 at 3:56 pm

    Great band.

  27. Drew June 3rd, 2008 at 4:01 pm

    All together now…..Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.

  28. Brad (get me Ryan Freel) June 3rd, 2008 at 4:03 pm

Manny Ramirez won’t be getting good pitches to hit with Ortiz out. Lowell, Drew, and Fairy-tek better have hot bats.

  29. Yu Darvish June 3rd, 2008 at 4:03 pm

They are still ahead of us now we need a run and Tampa needs to play like Tampa enough of fourth place it sickens me as a fan im one losing streak away from mailing it in last year was different the “Rays” still sucked n so did Toronto n the O’s Im VERY concerned about this season

  30. RosterRooster June 3rd, 2008 at 4:09 pm

Hazel Mae was the one Nesn Personality I could tolerate while at school. Im Glad its summer.

  31. Kelli in Conn. June 3rd, 2008 at 4:10 pm

“Unfortunately they are still ahead of us”.
Unfortunately it’s Toronto that’s ahead of the Yankees. It’s the 1st order of business to take care of the Jays and let the Socks and Rays rip each other to pieces.

  32. Julio Lugo is the worst SS in the AL June 3rd, 2008 at 4:10 pm

First Tina, now Hazel. A Nation turns its lonely eyes to Heidi Watney.
Manny’s wife is an absolute knockout.

  33. RustyJohn June 3rd, 2008 at 4:13 pm

All of this setting the stage for the inevitable Rays-Marlins World Series- average attendance for each game? 4,368.

  34. Deegan June 3rd, 2008 at 4:27 pm

Beckett is better than anything we got and do is okajima. That’s y the sox are better

  35. Don Vito A. Bellamo June 3rd, 2008 at 4:39 pm

    I LOVE IT !! :-)

  36. j June 3rd, 2008 at 4:45 pm

and Mike Lowell remembering he’s Mike Lowell

With an OPS that would be tied for 5th on the yankees while coming off a wrist injury.

You do actually watch the games, right?

  37. tony r June 3rd, 2008 at 4:45 pm

    patrick,
    I thought the same thing.

  38. MoBoy June 3rd, 2008 at 4:58 pm

THe Yankees will never have chance to0 have the Tigers,Indians,Mariners and Twins be in such a slump.

The Central was suppose to be te best league this is the perfect chance to beat up this team but of course we are unprepared.

  39. Jimmy the Saint June 3rd, 2008 at 5:25 pm

    Gayle:
Stark chose those two because he has easy connections to those two(One being a Phillie and the other being a former Phillie). Stark is from the Philly area after all.

  40. Mr. Faded Glory June 3rd, 2008 at 5:32 pm

“Josh Beckett (5-4, 4.30) hasn’t been Josh Beckett.”

Actually, you could make the case that last year’s Josh Beckett wasn’t “Josh Beckett” moreso than this year.

This is his third year in Boston, and he’s actually having a better year now than he did in 2006. Was ’07 the fluke?

  41. Mr. Faded Glory June 3rd, 2008 at 5:33 pm

Then again this is just looking at ERA, which is deceptive. Becket”s posted the best WHIP of his career in 2008 so far.

  42. VALIS June 3rd, 2008 at 5:53 pm

I’m not entirely sure how “Okajima hasn’t beeen what he was in 2007″ makes any sense. He had a 0.96 ERA in April and a 0.61 ERA in May. His only rough outing of the year came yesterday when he gave up 4 runs in two thirds of an inning. The one blemish is his blown save count, which is at five. While that stat might be a bit upsetting, it is worth noting that Farnsworth and Hawkins have a single blown save to their credit — and we all know how many games they’ve blown for the Yankees.

  43. VALIS June 3rd, 2008 at 5:55 pm

Anyway, hopefully the “kick ‘em while they’re down” mentality starts to pervade the Yankees dugout. The only “hot” team in the AL East appears to be the Rays. (Maybe Toronto, but it’s hard to tell with that team.)

  44. Boston Dave June 3rd, 2008 at 6:02 pm

let’s hope the Sox actually start losing some games.

They have been able to push aside any adverstiy and injuries so far this season and find ways to win games.

  45. Boston Dave June 3rd, 2008 at 6:05 pm

Ortiz is to the Sox as ARod is to the Yanks in that he is their only lefty power bat.

Losing ARod meant the Yanks did not have that righty bat in the lineup and made them even more susceptible to left handed pitching.

Ortiz is the only left handed “enforcer” in the Sox lineup.

  46. Scott (The Joba Era BEGINS!) June 3rd, 2008 at 6:31 pm

This time last year everyone was ready to write the Yankees off.

It gets late early around here but it’s not that late yet.

Boston was due for a run like this where some key guys got hurt. Tampa’s got a bullpen full of guys who are playing over their heads. That’ll cost them some games for sure.

I’m not going to say “we are in great shape” because it’s going to be a struggle but there is no reason at all – none – we should not be competitive all year.

    27/08!

  47. Espresso June 3rd, 2008 at 6:36 pm

I agree with Chris (and others). Beckett, while good, is way overrated because of last season especially the post season. Everyone is making him out to be the second coming of Cy Young but the reality is I would take Wanger, Doc Halladay and King Felix first (limiting this to AL righties).

  48. warden hwan June 3rd, 2008 at 7:01 pm

I guess the chronic roid use is finally taking its toll on Ortiz.

  49. Rob Thompson June 3rd, 2008 at 7:22 pm

Pete, don’t bother with those losers. Nothing good ever came from their anyway.

Beckett got so lucky last year. Matsui and Okijiwa also have come back to earth.

I am so excited for Joba tonight. We can all look back one day and remember “Where were you when Joba made his first start?” Get ready for some MAGIC for the next 10 years to come.

  50. Jack Daniels June 3rd, 2008 at 7:31 pm

I could read his lips through his glove as he left the mound. Question: Does Joba have the emotional maturity to be a starter?

  51. Jack Daniels June 3rd, 2008 at 7:32 pm

    Sorry wrong topic

  52. Kevin from Edmonton June 3rd, 2008 at 7:32 pm

Hopefully Hazel Mae doesn’t come back to Canada!

  53. Wendy M June 3rd, 2008 at 9:55 pm

    …and Lowell homers again. LOL.

  54. Rob Thompson June 3rd, 2008 at 10:09 pm

At least it makes me happy that these losers are suffering more than we are.

  55. PittburghYankeeFan June 4th, 2008 at 8:10 am

    Pete

Hazel Mae is leaving? Did you finally convince her to marry you and move to NY?
