Mariano Rivera was named the AL Player of the Week yesterday. Somehow it was for the first time in his career.
Which led to this exchange with Derek Jeter.
Me: “Did you hear Mo won player of the week?
Jeter: “What did Mo do?”
Mark Feinsand of the News: “Three saves, didn’t allow any runs.”
Jeter: “What’s new?”
Mariano didn’t know about the award until I mentioned it to him. I was looking for a comment for my early edition notebook.
Rivera looked at me and quite seriously said, “That’s nice. But the only thing I want is for my teammates to respect what I do. Everything else really doesn’t mean much. I want respect and I want to win.”
If anybody else said that, it would have been cliche. But he really meant it.
Whether Edwar Ramirez has the fastball to make something of himself remains to be seen. But give him credit for this: He has attached himself to Mo this season. He’s following Rivera around like a puppy.
You can’t help but think that’s one of the main reasons Ramirez has pitched as well as he has this season.
