The power of the ‘stache cannot be denied

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Jun 05, 2008 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

The Big G just crushed a two-run walk-off into the upper deck despite his sore foot. It came a few minutes after the Yankees had one of the best arms in the draft fall to them.

Good day for the pinstripes.

    w00t! Skollar call me.

  2. Matt Waters June 5th, 2008 at 5:10 pm

I’m so happy Farnsworth got the win.

  3. PreteFunkEra June 5th, 2008 at 5:11 pm

Not sure if anyone else noticed. I was at Tuesday’s game and it seemed the scoreboard guys were having some photoshop fun. They gave Giambino a huge orange curly stache…..pretty funny.

    Great game

  4. Josh June 5th, 2008 at 5:12 pm

ugh i was in such a bad place 10 minutes ago, im so happy giambi came through :)

  5. raymagnetic ®™ June 5th, 2008 at 5:13 pm

 DFA Giambi, DFA DAmon, the Yankees can’t score runs, the Yankees need to trade everybody  13 years of playoffs in a row but the Yankees suck

Some of you whiners need to root for Pittsburgh. At least you’ll have legitimate reasons to whine like babies.

It’s a marathon, not a sprint. Tonight, no matter what happens between the Sox and Rays the Yankees will gain a game in the standings.

Despite not having the best player and best offensive catcher in the league for weeks they are still right in the thick of the race.

  6. Frank Discussion June 5th, 2008 at 5:14 pm

I managed to scramble home just in time to catch the 9th, what a shot that was by Giambi ! And kudos to both Alex and Hideki for scoring / getting on base. Great to see this team come back late in the game.

  7. CB June 5th, 2008 at 5:15 pm

Fantastic game though I just can’t understand Girardi’s obsession with Farnsworth.

Here’s Keith Law’s scouting report on Gerrit Cole:

    Ultimate Role: No. 1-2 starter

Summary: (Watch scouting video) Cole is a strongly built right-handed pitcher with the best arm among prep players in this draft. His fastball is electric, with a four-seamer at 96-97 mph and a two-seamer with good tail at 93-95 mph. His arm is loose and unbelievably quick. His delivery isn’t smooth, however: His arm action is long and he gets his elbow up a little too high in the back. His breaking ball is a sharp curve with slider-like tilt, but it’s inconsistent and he doesn’t use it that often in games, pitching mostly off his fastball. Cole also has a changeup with good fading action that he tries to guide out of his hand. Makeup concerns surfaced after he chose Scott Boras as his advisor, but weren’t a factor prior to last autumn. Stuff this good wouldn’t get out of the top 10 picks if Cole was signable for slot, but the Boras connection and Cole’s commitment to UCLA will see him fall to a team willing to pay top dollar for a top arm.

Time for Wang to grow a ‘stache.

    “Good day for the pinstripes.”

    Well said Blogfather!

Maybe the Yankees can ride some of the momentum gained on this fabulous day… between Giambi’s bomb and snagging Cole at the end of the 1st.

    Just awesome.

Maybe now some of the haters will quiet down!

  10. YankeesLuv June 5th, 2008 at 5:17 pm

We haven’t had a win like this all year, sweet.

  11. JGNYC June 5th, 2008 at 5:17 pm

    RESPECT THE GIAMBINO!!!

  12. Jeter2007 June 5th, 2008 at 5:18 pm

    a great day

    walk off hr to win

great 1st pick – i live in the oc, and i’ve read a lot about cole in the papers

  13. rconn23 June 5th, 2008 at 5:18 pm

The whole team needs to grow staches, PRONTO.

  14. saucY June 5th, 2008 at 5:18 pm

so who are we hoping for with our 2nd pick?

  15. Motown Yankees Fan June 5th, 2008 at 5:19 pm

Joe – what a simple solution. He’d totally look like a porn star then. I hope Pete gives him the tip.

  16. CB June 5th, 2008 at 5:20 pm

There are still a number of good players left on the board. I think they’ll get another good player at 44.

They could take a left handed pitcher there.

  17. Sara June 5th, 2008 at 5:20 pm

That was unbelieveable!!!!! Turning point of the season! Love it!

  18. SJ44 June 5th, 2008 at 5:21 pm

I’ve never been so happy to be so wrong about a guy.

Jason Giambi looked dead as a player. Its a tribute to him to pick himself off the deck and become a contributing player again. Good for him.

Somebody who knows Rebecca should text her. The Twins Took Shooter Hunt from Tulane with the 31st pick.

BTW, the Brewers just took Evan Fredrickson with the 35th pick.

Why is that important? He interned for me a couple of years ago. Great kid. Really happy for him.

He had a hunch it was going to be the Brewers and he was correct! Best of luck to Evan.

  19. saucY June 5th, 2008 at 5:21 pm

    Ah, the Lace ad again.

They must know people are in celebratory moods today as they leave work!

  20. Confucius June 5th, 2008 at 5:21 pm

“Some of you whiners need to root for Pittsburgh. At least you’ll have legitimate reasons to whine like babies.”

It’s so sad that you can’t even enjoy this win. You have to turn it into a shot at other posters.

Anyway, what’s this about Gammons ‘fuming at the draft?’ Because Cole fell to us? If I’m not mistaken, weren’t the Sox luring guys down the board with huge signing bonuses years before we started doing it? Did he ever say a peep then? (don’t answer, rhetorical question)

Just to play devil’s advocate, I wonder if Cole and his Boras power would have been available to us in a later round, and we jumped the gun. I guess the only worry is that the Sox would have taken him. Gammons would have a very different face on if that happened.

  21. raymagnetic ®™ June 5th, 2008 at 5:22 pm

Another thing I don’t get is how someone can be mad at Cano today when all he did was have 2 hits and he scored a run on Betemit’s HR.

I understand that this is the Yankees and all of the players must play like Gods every day but the dislike for Cano today is really and truly ridiculous. Cano’s not the reason why the Yankees almost lost the game today.

It’s starts with pitching. The Yankees scored 9 runs today off of the best staff in the league. They scored 14 runs the past two games and had over 20 hits the past two games and yet numerous people are saying the Yankees can’t hit.

    Gimme a break!

    *steps off of soapbox*

  22. SJ44 June 5th, 2008 at 5:22 pm

    CB,

I’m hoping they go for Dennis Raben from the University of Miami if he is there at #44.

Paul O’Neill clone who can move through the system quickly. He’s got a lot of game.

  23. raymagnetic ®™ June 5th, 2008 at 5:24 pm

    Confucious,

I am salivating in the win to be sure. Just had to get some things off of my chest after reading through the game log that’s all. I’m done ranting however.

  24. hmmm June 5th, 2008 at 5:25 pm

“Fantastic game though I just can’t understand Girardi’s obsession with Farnsworth.”

    seriously.

we get it, you caught him in Chicago.

  25. saucY June 5th, 2008 at 5:26 pm

“we get it, you caught him in Chicago.”

next he’ll be lobbying to sign Borowski this offseason :|

  26. CB June 5th, 2008 at 5:26 pm

    SJ,

I like Raben. But I gotta say – Tim Melville is still on the board

  27. Boston Dave June 5th, 2008 at 5:28 pm

please keep posting the supplemental picks… I’m in bumper to bumper on the Mass Pike and need something to read.

  28. benfica356 June 5th, 2008 at 5:28 pm

jeremy bleitch chosen by the yanks a LHP

  29. Dee June 5th, 2008 at 5:28 pm

    WOW!!!!!!

Never thought I would say this but I love Giambi and his stache!

That HR completely reversed what could have been one of the most frustrating games of the season for me. Wang pitched poorly again, and that Melky error in the 5th was just inexcusable for opening the flood gate especially for a typically good defensive player like Melky.

And Jason really saved Joe G’s ass today. I’m usually a huge supporter of Joe but that Cano bunt decision was pathetic and the decision to pitch Farnsy instead of Mo was even worse especially when the offense was in rally mode coming off the 8th. That run on Farnsy was for sure going to haunt Joe G when Matsui batted Alex in for what could have been a game-tying run. THANK GOD FOR JASON, otherwise I would have been mad at Joe G for a long long time!

Listen up Girardi, stop playing with fire, you got REALLY lucky today!

  30. SJ44 June 5th, 2008 at 5:28 pm

    Ray,

You are going a tad too far now.

They got lucky. Obviously, we will take it and be damn happy with the win.

But, let’s be honest, they played poorly today. Offense, defense, starting pitching, couldn’t put down a bunt, it was not a good performance for 82/3 innings today in a big game.

Its a great win and we all hope it turns around the season.

Overall, its fair to say they can’t expect miracles everyday, no?

You know they have to begin playing a lot better.

Let’s hope its the start of a good run.

  31. benfica356 June 5th, 2008 at 5:28 pm

    from Stanford

  32. Boston Dave June 5th, 2008 at 5:29 pm

anyone have a report on bleitch?

  33. raymagnetic ®™ June 5th, 2008 at 5:32 pm

    SJ,

I am taking it a bit too far, but I’m overexagerrating to make a point.

I’d like the Yankees to start pitching better games. I think a lot of the problems with the pen will disappear once the starters pitch deeper into games.

I have no doubt in my mind that the Yankees will score runs this year. The starting pitching is what has me most concerned right now.

  34. G. Love June 5th, 2008 at 5:34 pm

    Ray,

I don’t like Cano. I like nothing about his game and the way he approaches the game. Something about him doesn’t ring right with me at all. This past week with the pathetic attempts at laying down bunts has me at the end of my rope with this guy.

Even Leiter said on the broadcast that pitchers who don’t handle bats learn how to execute a bunt when needed.

With runs at a premium and him forgetting how to hit, he better be able to move a runner over in that situation.

I love the team. I don’t like Cano. It’s called an opinion. Just because it is not yours, doesn’t mean it’s wrong.

  35. Dee June 5th, 2008 at 5:35 pm

Did anyone see Joba pushing the captain out of the way so he could be perfectly positioned to welcome Jason back home? Too funny! Joba, show some respect:-)

  36. JGNYC June 5th, 2008 at 5:35 pm

    Don’t trash the ‘stache!

  37. SJ44 June 5th, 2008 at 5:36 pm

    RAy,

I agree re: the starting pitching. Its a huge concern to me and that’s why I don’t have a problem with Joba in the rotation. I think he will help once he gets going.

I am concerned about the offense. But, I’m more concerned about the defense and the lack of fundamentals.

They can no longer hit their way out of their mistakes.

Somehow, they have to string together better starting performances and REALLY tighten up on the defensive end of the game.

Its a miracle win but the mistakes, as Girardi talked about with Suzyn after the game, leave your head spinning.

  38. DYNASTY IS DESTINY! June 5th, 2008 at 5:37 pm

    Dee,

Yes, I noticed that too-that was funny!

  39. raymagnetic ®™ June 5th, 2008 at 5:40 pm

    G. Love,

You don’t have to like Cano, that’s your right. But today he had 2 hits so it wasn’t like he forgot how to hit today is all I’m saying. Cano’s a career 300+ hitter. Those guys don’t bunt very often if at all.

    SJ,

It was a very sloppy game today no question and they definitely need to start playing more professionally. They got away with one today and considering how they gave away two games last week it feels good to see them get one back that they should have lost.

  40. S.A.- No pain..no gain June 5th, 2008 at 5:45 pm

Still in shock over this game. Wow
Now they just have to win tomorrow..
    :)

  41. trisha - men, not machines June 5th, 2008 at 5:49 pm

And this is why you don’t ever write off a player just because he is in a slump – and I still say, why you pay closer attention to the experts in the organization rather than the experts on any forum.

    :)

    WOW

For the record, I stayed with Giambi from day one, but I also never thought his defense was as bad as others here made it out to be.

  42. Fran June 5th, 2008 at 5:52 pm

Trisha – Hi. This game was a roller coaster ride. When the Yanks were down 7-2 I have to admit I was having doubts. But they fought back. Then after Kyle gave up the run in the top of the 9th I thought is was over again. This was a great win. This should get them going on a nice streak.

  43. Patrick (the good one) June 5th, 2008 at 6:04 pm

SJ44, I don’t know whats going on but it sounds like you are having a bad day. Just yesterday you were talking about how the Yankees might be sellers at the deadline but still compete for a playoff spot. Now you are referring to them as a “last place team” and saying how the team should be blown up.

Relax, its only June. A month ago you were one of the people ripping up trolls that were saying the Yankees are doomed and now you are basically saying they are done. This team has a ton of talent and the odds are it will show at some point.

  44. LathamJoe June 5th, 2008 at 6:22 pm

Wonderful win for the Yankees. But, alas, SJ is right. If you watched this Game, just look at the mental mistakes and glaring weaknesses on this Team of $200+ Million Dollars:

Another failure to get a “quality” start/significant innings from a starter.

    No effective 8th inning option.

No “long man” to go 2-3 innings for the failed starter. This has negatively impacted the bullpen and will be felt more so in July/August.

No lefty out of the bullpen. Jays bat Stairs and Overbay back-to-back and then even come with two more lefty pinch hitters. Why? Of course, Yankees have no lefty reliever to force a manager even to THINK about a switch.

7-6 Ballgame, Posada draws a leadoff walk. No one off the bench to pinch run, perhaps steal a base or score from 2nd on a basehit. Instead Shelley Duncan PINCH RUNS!

Cano can’t get a sac bunt down. Girardi says (after the Game) we’ll get it right”. Isn’t that what Spring Training and Hitting Coaches are for??????

And a defensive replacement a first base in caes the Yankees take the lead for the 9th
Horrible job by Cashman. He has handcuffed Girardi with this bench!

I’ve watched and rooted for NY Yankee Teams since the late 50s. This is the most I’ve ever been disappointed in a Yankee Team. At least in the mid-60s, Early-70s you expected poor performances.

  45. daville726 June 5th, 2008 at 6:30 pm

Anybody know where you can see game highlights online? I missed the last 5 mins of the game because my DVR cut it off, just want to see Giambi’s HR

  46. Scorpio June 5th, 2008 at 6:42 pm

    daville726,

    http://www.yesnetwork.com will definitely have it.

  47. MJR June 5th, 2008 at 7:26 pm

Can someone remind me why Krazy Kyle is stil pitching?

    Really! :(

  48. Jeepers Creepers June 5th, 2008 at 8:06 pm

Wow. A come back win, the first of the season when previously going 0-27 after trailing in the 8th inning. That is pretty impressive.

Seems the hairy lip is doing the job. Damon and Giambi both are doing well since sporting some facial hair. Now all we need to see is the rest of the team growing them and 27 will be attained!

I figured the game was over after the Blue Jays tacked on another run in the 8th. Seeing it down to 0-2 count, 2 outs, Giambi at the plate… man. With Giambi’s missed swing where he was going for the home run I really was expecting a strike out. Nice to be wrong. Nice to see a win like that, picking up their mistakes and not giving up.

Cano really needs to have lessons on how to bunt though.

  49. sfill June 5th, 2008 at 8:22 pm

    Picture this:
    Wang with a stache.
Not unthinkable right? I think someone should steal his razor and force him to grow one.

  50. JP June 5th, 2008 at 9:54 pm

Any at the game today interested in selling their set of Uno cards, please let me know via email (prebish@comcast.net). My 6 year old son loves Uno and after taking him to the stadium for the first time this year, he loves the Yankees.

    Thank you.
