A little more on Gerrit Cole

Interesting tidbit on Gerrit Cole. Had he not attended private school (Orange Lutheran), he would have gone to Foothill High in Santa Ana. That is the alma mater of one Phil Hughes.

I spoke to a scout today who said the Yankees were taking no risk whatsoever in terms of talent. Cole is tall, strong and the best high-school arm in the draft. But some scouts, he said, think Cole is spoiled and too arrogant.

Damon Oppenheimer said Cole simply hates to lose. It’ll be interesting to see how he handles pro ball. At one point or another, everybody gets humbled. Just ask Hughes.

Oppenheimer said signability is the last factor in how he makes his decisions. That means the Yankees plan to do whatever it takes. Scott Boras will be seeking something along the lines of what Rick Porcello got from the Tigers last season ($3.3 million). Cole is not Porcello but he’ll get a significant bonus.

This will be one of those last-second announcements.

Here are links to some interesting stories from the Orange County Register:

A pre-draft story.

His senior year stats are here. In a word: sick.

A story on his last h.s. game, a 1-0 loss.

And in case you missed it earlier, here’s the audio of the conference call he did with the New York writers:

Maybe Cole can play first base on the days he doesn’t pitch.

  2. MikeEff

he sounds like a little brat.

  3. GreenBeret7

How old is Derek Jeter getting to be? Gerrit Cole wasn’t even 2 years old when the geezer was drafted the Yanks 1st draft pick in 1992.

  4. whoa

I’m excited about having the kid join the Yankees’ vast stable of high ceiling pitching prospects.

  5. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 12 )

sounds like a Denace The Menace in the making

Hey, he can menace major league hitters for 20 years in pinstripes and I won’t be too unhappy.

On another note, hopefully, Luke Greinke can grow up to be as talented as his big brother.

“Hey, he can menace major league hitters for 20 years in pinstripes and I won’t be too unhappy.”

oh no I got no problem there, he just better sign that offer sheet, because that kid better no you can’t BS NY

” hopefully, Luke Greinke can grow up to be as talented as his big brother.”

Hopefully Luke Greinke isn’t as messed up in the head as his brother

Having issues and being mature enough to take a break and get help seems pretty mature and intelligent to me.

  10. GreenBeret7

Too many matures in that last post. Maybe a good idea, though. Message boards need all the maturity that it can get.

    Hope this kid signs.

I read he sent out a letter to all 30 teams advising them not to draft him due to his committment to UCLA.

  12. Rob Thompson

After reading every one of these links and articles, I think we got the best player in the draft. What an absolute steal. It makes you wonder what the other GM’s in baseball were thinking passing on this guy.

  13. Travis G.

he sounds 12 years old. well, whatever. 96 mph is 96 mph.
