    By the way, Arbiso is pitching tomorrow for Cal State Fullerton. Would have been a great night if he and Bleiche had faced each other tonight, huh?

  4. Pokey June 7th, 2008 at 3:31 am

    Pete,
    What is the probability of singing all or most of these guys?

  5. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 12 ) June 7th, 2008 at 3:32 am

    52 1604 Brandon, DH, Youwanna Peace A. Mi., Man.
    $1,000,000 (Trust me I’ll take care of Kei Igawa like no one can)

  6. GreenBeret7 June 7th, 2008 at 3:46 am

    I see that Pete mentioned the Yanks picking up two pitchers with one draft pick. Pat Venditte pitches both left and right handed. How fun would the confusion be to see him pitch against 3rd baseman Larry Jones of Atlanta (since the Yanks will be signing Teixeira)?

    Some breakdown on the draft #’s

    51 players

    15 HS / 36 College

    Position Breakdown (w/ HS/Col splits)

    RHP = 20 (5/15)
    LHP = 6 (3/3)
    C = 4 (2/2)
    1B = 3 (all college)
    2B/SS = 8 (3/5)
    3B = 1 (college)
    OF = 9 (2/7)

    Positionally seems like even breakdown, 1B are all college with hope of them reaching the majors sooner (given our dearth of prospects) Lots of balance…. should be interesting if we can sign 30+.

  8. Jorge Steinbrenner (the long lost third brother) June 7th, 2008 at 8:04 am

    I love that one of our last picks has the first name “Creede.” Makes me hopeful that we’ll draft someone with the last name “Schrute” next year.

    I think one of the more interesting picks in this draft is that of Pat Venditte from Creighton. Pat is an ambidextrous pitcher who is actually pretty good. Like a switch hitter, he will switch which arm he pitches with depending on the batter (he has a specially made glove). Don’t know if he’ll ever make it to New York but then again, I thought Joba needed to play his senior year at Nebraska. Shows you how much I know.

  10. Jeepers Creepers June 7th, 2008 at 8:37 am

    Venditte was picked last year as well, if I remember right, and he didn’t sign. What I don’t understand is if you are in the draft why wouldn’t you be willing to sign? I can understand it more if you are asking for way over slot for your worth, but not if you are not intending to sign to keep going to college.

  11. Richard Simmons June 7th, 2008 at 8:51 am

    nice profile of the ambidextrous pitcher showing him pitch from both sides along with interview. Interesting.

    Venditte was picked in the 45th round last year as a junior. When you are that far down, you’re probably better off playing out your senior year and finishing your degree because you can probably earn more in the “real world” than as a 45th round pick with almost no signing bonus. If you are lucky enough to stay healthy and have a good season maybe you can increase your stock, which is what Pat apparently did. This season he was 9-3 with seven saves and a 3.34 ERA. This is a pitcher that can be used in a lot of different ways.

    Also, Mitch Abeita, a catcher from Nebraska drafted in the 19th round has the might be a sleeper with some potential.

  13. Jeepers Creepers June 7th, 2008 at 9:18 am

    He could make for a very interesting relief pitcher if he can pitch at that high a level. Late inning games, many teams look to match up the batters with the pitchers, can’t do that as well when the guy can throw from both sides.

    I did not like Gerrit Cole’s interview. Have no doubts about his talent, but the interview was a real turn-off. I know he’s trying to play hard-to-get to get himself a good contract, that’s expected and especially with Boras as his agent, but I don’t think he was as respectful to the Yankee organization as he could be on that call.

    For people who didn’t listen to the call, here are the parts that bothered me most:

    1. First question…Jason Zillo asked him to describe his excitement on draft day after being picked by the Yankees. Cole said he went to play golf with his friends, because with his busy schedule he doesn’t get to play a lot. No I was so excited, I was so honored to be picked by the Yankees, nothing. I would have been fine if he said he went to play golf to celebrate being drafted, but no, he just went to play golf. The answer wasn’t even appropriate for the question.

    2. When asked about the photo that’s been going around with him holding a sign that reads “Yankee Fan Today Tomorrow Forever” during the 2001 Word Series, he said the people sitting next to them made the sign and left the game early so he ended up holding it.

    He did say his dad was a Yankee fan, and that he was big fan of Brosius, O’Neill and Bernie during the last Yankee run, but throughout the interview I feel like Jason Zillo was trying really hard to get him to agree that he’s excited to be picked by the Yankees and he just wouldn’t comply. The golf thing particularly irritates me, according to reports he was supposed to be in school that day but from the interview he sounded like a brat that he ditched school for golf on a school day just because he felt like it that day.

    I need to keep reminding myself of that 98mph fastball. But so far, I’m not impressed. I know it was ages ago when my parents were barely born during that Lou Gehrig speech, but I always feel strongly that all Yankee players should feel like the luckiest men alive. Otherwise they don’t have the heart it takes to win for us.

  15. bigjf June 7th, 2008 at 10:29 am

    Bleich looked pretty impressive last night. I’d say he’s a good pick.

  16. Bob June 7th, 2008 at 10:48 am

    Why didn`t the Yankees pick kyle Farnsworth long lost Twin

  17. Skippy June 7th, 2008 at 11:11 am

    Round 40, Sam Mendes? The Oscar-winning director? Oh wait, that’s just Mende, not Mendes. Too bad. A good director might improve the pacing of the games.

  18. bigjf June 7th, 2008 at 11:25 am

    Lot of good stuff on Venditte if you google him, from youtube clips to old articles. Sounds like a good story. I’m almost certain I saw a feature on him on SportsCenter a while back.
