Johnny Damon made some history and won the game at the same time. Brian Heyman has the story on a roller coaster of a Yankees game.

Joba Chamberlain starts again today and plans to go deeper. This notebook also includes an update on injured umpire Jerry Layne (nice save by Jorge) and some other tidbits.

The Sunday Baseball Beat as some Father’s Day ideas along with a look back at the draft and an unusual trade.

Oh crap..Father’s Day is coming up. Better start shopping.

  2. yanksince57 - all hail the igawalbatross

concerning the 7ip 2hitter, did kei pitch more in the down part of the zone or was it just more AAAA shenanigans?

Forget igawa, he’s not coming back to NY. Also does any feel Cash should had signed Livan now ( 5.32 era )? You guys would have been all over him for that………..

I am going to do something I rarely do and take a shot at lineup (not batting order) the more I thought about it last night it sort of makes sense.

Matsui will play left and Damon will DH. With 2 hots days in a row and Matsui sitting yesterday I think Joe was probably thinking I can keep Matsui fresh for a full day in the field and give Damon a breather just DH’ing.

Giambi will play first same logic as he was the DH yesterday and avoided having to be on the field for the hot weather so today gets the field.

I know Psada is meant to catch and I guess that makes sense but with the heat not sure about it but if he does he will for sure have tomorrow off.

Pete – Good column today. Makes me think of my Dad…

Wish I could have been in Scranton last night. Family obligations prevented it. Maybe Trenton? I hear they’ve got this guy who’s “the next Joba”, according to Tyler Kepner.

  6. jon

mark melancon was filthy last night

  7. EricVA made it to SWB

Good morning guys! Had an awesome time last night, excluding almost running out of gas in the middle of nowhere PA at midnight. To answer a lot of questions about Igawa:

No he didn’t look that stellar. I couldn’t count how many times he threw that famous upstairs hanging breaking ball or bounced one in the dirt. He would’ve gotten crushed against a MLB team.

  8. yankee lover

Two interesting things. Again Girardi leaves another pitcher in too long. How could he let Petitte start the 7th. He gave up 6 runs already.
Then his post game comment that it was Petittes game to lose? The only alligence Girardi should have is to the scoreboard

after seeing jerry lane get hit under the chin and seeing jose molina get hit in the helmet on consecutive pitches the other day, i dont know why mlb doesnt make those helmet/masks mandtory for catchers and umps. they should do it immediatly for the minors and could grandfather it in for current mlb guys if they feel they have to. making base coaches wear helmets will have a miniscule effect compared to doing this. if molina hadnt been wearing the helmet the othe day, he’d probably have a concussion and be out right now and lane wouldnt have one.

  10. Y's Guy loved SWB

meant to say lane wouldnt have a concussion had he been wearing the helmet/mask.

    longtime-

there was no” you guys”. i ‘ll have to take credit for pointing out that cashman could have signed hernandez to ease the transition on the frangible rookies by providing innings for one year.

pettitte for 17 million has given the yankees 5 wins and 8 losses in his starts.

hernandez for 5 million has given the twins 10 wins and 4 losses in his starts.

so for 17 million the yankees are 3 games under .500 with pettitte.

and for 5 million the twins are 6 games over .500 with hernandez.

so if it was a dumb idea to sign hernandez by the twins, what does it make signing pettitte by the yankees?

the rush to joba continues today as cashman pushes the envelope of what can be expected from a rookie.

The “things to do with dad” list was a great piece.

And please make those shirts available on the blog, net proceeds to charity.

You know what would be the perfect Father’s Day gift? Taking your dad to Yankee Stadium for the last time to see a game. Oh wait, scratch that, MLB’s got them playing in Houston. Good job.

  14. Dennis-Costanza(Sox fan)

Pete. – Good Father’s Day article.

The Yanks win yesterday put everyone in the AL East over .500. That is very, very rare this late in the season for a 5 team divsion to have every team at or above .500. I could only find one example since 2002 of a division having every team over .500 in June. The NL West did it until around the middle of June in 2006.

I could have sworn the “experts” had ordained the vaunted Al Central as the best division in baseball before actual games were played.

They now sound a tad like Big Brown’s trainer…

    Have a great Sunday.

great time last nite hats off to Ron Hromisin for putting together an outstanding time for all. I hope it turns into an annual affair. thanks from me and my son who also attended.

  16. HOW THE HECK?

    Dennis… great line!

  17. Viking Coach

Again I ask when is anything more than a passing note going to be written on former Concordia star Mike Aviles. Mike was recently recalled by the Royals and the Journal NEws reports that he was a Dominican college star..wrong, Mike had his first major league hits on Friday night and was in the middle of all the Royals did offensivly yesterday. Why not talk to him and give a local kid some coverage. Its a great story only recruited by one college coach, two time all american, national player of the year at the smallest school that plays baseball in all of D-2, signed for $1000 dollars and the Royals 2007 minor league player of the year, find out what Concordia did for him to get him where he is today. You guys did not want to write about how his former coach got railroaded out of his job, maybe you can do this story….don’t you have editors that are supposed to come up with these ideas?? Your a local paper do a local story

  18. V

Man, I was looking at the fangraphs of the game yesterday.

Johnny Damon had a WPA of 86.6%!!!
    Posada with 54.9%

    Jose Guillen had 57.6%

    Pettitte had a -74.9%.

The numbers bear out that the pitchers ‘lost’ that game, but that the offense picked them up and carried them.

Your perpetually negative “I told you so” style of analysis is alway a joy to read.

id like to suggest that you might get better results by emailing pete and other reporters or editors and suggesting a story rather than demanding a story be done. im sure he’s an interesting guy, but he is, after all, a fringe player on the k.c. royals.
