MLB’s new pace of game rules get serious

Peter Abraham

This from the AP:

Steve Trachsel was designated for assignment Tuesday by the Baltimore Orioles, who couldn’t count on the right-hander in the bullpen after he struggled as a starter.

The 37-year-old Trachsel was 2-5 with an 8.39 ERA in 10 games this season, including eight starts. After losing his spot in the starting rotation, he yielded six runs in two relief appearances totaling six innings.

I don’t get it, did he have a slow delivery?

    First!

  2. JW

    The slowest.

  3. JW

Watching him pitch is like watching paint dry.

  4. RustyJohn

I though he retired like three years ago. It is a bit like hearing a 100 year old celebrity died, “katherine Hepburn? I thought she died in 1988?”

  5. Fran

I would be surprised if anyone picked him up. I think he is done.

  6. MikeEff

nothing was more excruciating than watching him picth

  7. Chris NY

“Grace, she died 30 years ago..”

What is this WEIRD BLOG HEADLINES DAY or what?

  9. Web

    Uncle Lewis?

  10. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

Oh great, here comes Mike F saying the Yankees should sign him cause he is a vet.

I pledge allegiance to the flag

There’s never a better time for a joke than when someone loses his job. Yeah, absolutely hilarious.

  13. 2008 Yankees

Has anyone seen the umps enforce the speed up rule?? I haven’t heard of anyone penalized yet.

  14. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

Jay- He isn’t hurting for money. He still gets paid.

“There’s never a better time for a joke than when someone loses his job. Yeah, absolutely hilarious.”

Ordinarily I would agree but when a guy has got a couple of million resting in the bank I’m not losing any sleep worrying about his self esteem ;)

  16. murphydog

    jennifer:

    great minds…

  17. Mr. & Mrs. Alka Seltzer

If you went to a night game and had to watch Trachsel pitch to a team full of Nomar Garciaparras, you’d have to call the boss to say you’ll be very late for work the next morning.

  18. gayle

He was known as the human rain delay if that says anything about how slow he pitched.

Wow people really need to chill out between the last thread comments about alleged boozing, pete’s alleged innuendo in his headline (you really h ave to have issues if you took it to mean what you complained about) and ballplayers wives I think today has got to be the lowest point in blog commentary in a while.

  19. 2008 Yankees

    How about this scenario

Trachsel pitching with Mackey Sasser catching and Mike Hargrove hitting…..

That is truly a HUMAN RAIN DELAY setting.

  20. Pierce - 2008 Best Actress Academy Award

I guess Trachsel’s method of trying to lull the batter to sleep didn’t work, huh?

  21. Seriously Very Silly

Pete, when can we expect a post about your thoroughly professional habit of posting bizarre discrediting remarks on Yankee fan pages?? Everyone go to Know Mass (Figure it out – Pete blocks posts with the name properly written)

Pete posts rude remarks in the comments on the site – how hypocritical for him to decry the same on his own site, and how bizarre that a supposedly accredited and professional journalist does such things in his spare time. Right??

  22. Doreen

I’m a very literal person, so I don’t always catch the humor in the headlines right away.

The last entry, my heart skipped a beat — ohmigosh, what terrifying thing happened!?!?

And this one, well, I guess I just don’t know Trachsel’s reputation.

That said, it takes exactly one comment to set me straight!

  23. Francis The Praying Mantis

how about if al leiter came in to relieve trachsel?

  24. Chuck

Haha… he’s toast anyways.. doesn’t have the control anymore that allows moose, moyer and maddux to pitch into their twilight years.

  25. bphill

wow…never thought I would get to see this….
Dontrelle Willis in A ball…wow. Lucky Lakeland fans…

  26. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 12 )

just release D-Train, we’d fix him in our minor leagues …though I never thought I’d see the day Dontrelle can’t pitch :(

  27. 2008 Yankees

    D-train should be DH’ing for the Tigers…..

  28. mel

    Seriously,

Get over it. No one is interested.

Phil Hughes has been pain free for a week he says.

  30. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

I wonder what all those who wanted the Yankees to trade for D-train think now?

Come on speak up you know who you are.

  31. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 12 )

    Oppenheimer on Chris Smith

Oh that made my day, for the love of god sign him already.

  32. raymagnetic ®™

    Hey,

Phil Hughes says he’s been pain free for a week.

Pardon me if this ends up being a double post. I’m not sure if my other post will make it through the filter.

  33. jennifer- I got your back Girardi

Just read that, he also got his new Oakley glasses. :) He is ready!

  34. raymagnetic ®™

The source of the Phil Hughes news is his blog.

  35. PJH

Phil Hughes- “They will help a lot with maintaining the blog, which has been my biggest headache. I’ll be back later with the exact details.”

No Phil, your biggest headache is staying healthy and learning to get some people out with poor location and a low 90s fastball.

  36. Pierce - 2008 Best Actress Academy Award

Mussina isn’t having trouble getting outs and his fastball is not even hitting 90.

  37. joe

those oakleys are going to be intimidating

  38. Tom

If you saw Gardner more than once you would see the following He is projected as a fourth outfielder and has a below average arm. With Damon on Gardner in the outfield together it would be where singles went to grow up to be doubles. Melkey is only 23 vs Gardner at 25. Melkey is considered to be a better player. also Melkey average from the right side is on the rise.

  39. VT Yankeefan

I’ll never forget the game he pitched in Fenway on May 6, 2000. Trachsel and Pedro both pitched complete games allowing 3 hits and 6 hits respectively. Trachsel’s Devil Rays won 1-0. I’ve seen great pitching performances by one pitcher but this was absolutely one of the greatest head to head pitching matchups I have ever seen.

  40. cc

never understood how Trachsel lasted so long. The stats listed above look like one of his regular seasons.
