Terrifying clubhouse news

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Jun 10, 2008 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Anonymous sources tell the Daily News that Roger Clemens and other players use Viagra as a PED.

This seems like a good reason to make a lot of lame jokes. I’ll pass, thanks. But how do you play baseball when … oh, never mind.

If Roger Clemens could get in the Wayback Machine, think he would have apologized back in December when this all came out? Rusty Hardin isn’t exactly Michael Kuzak when it comes to legal advice.

Back later (much later, we’re on the West Coast) with the lineup.

this whole thing is getting so old.

  6. Anthony June 10th, 2008 at 2:43 pm

Or maybe not so huge…who knows.

  7. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 June 10th, 2008 at 2:47 pm

    That explains a lot.

Roger is such a joke. These stories gets worse and worse.

Pete don’t get confused like Ramon Castro :)

Sorry – carrying over from the last post.

The guess here is that either Gardner or Melky are trade chips at some point this year or after the season.

If Gardner is a ML-ready outfielder, then will the organization let him sit down there through 2009 as a backup in case of an injury? Is he scheduled for RF should Abreu split after 2008? I don’t think so.

I would think that one of them are expendable, especially with Ajax on the rise and expected in 2010?

PJH- Agreed, I don’t believe it is on field performance, it is off field.

  12. Tim June 10th, 2008 at 3:03 pm

i guess thats why they call him the rocket! ba zing!!!!

  13. Yanksrule57 June 10th, 2008 at 3:07 pm

Roger must have really made someone at the Daily News angry. That paper has had almost a gleeful tone each time they brought out another revolting Roger revelation (how’s that for alliteration?).
Now I don’t feel sorry for Clemens. He brought all this on himself by fighting this and not just owning up.
But by the same token I don’t think it it right to take joy in his misery either.

Rusty Hardin seems like more of an Arnie Becker than a Michael Kuzak if you ask me.

Right now, Robinson Cano has a worse VORP than Ensberg:

    And we let Ensberg go.

  21. Jake June 10th, 2008 at 3:15 pm

Any bloggers local to NorCal that will be at the game tonight?

I will and I can’t wait. I’ll be there Thursday too if any of you want to meet up and talk trash to A’s fans.

  22. Scott Brosius Would make a Good Neighbor June 10th, 2008 at 3:20 pm

    Pete-
I’m a little uncomfortable with this post, especially the title. What’s so supposedly terrifying about Viagra in the Clubhouse? Is it a gay joke? If so, it’s pretty homophobic . . . and not funny. I know it was just a joke, but it perpetuates an ugly fear, IMO.

  23. AJ June 10th, 2008 at 3:21 pm

In light of this, Rusty Hardin is an unfortunate name.

  24. TKinDC June 10th, 2008 at 3:23 pm

    Rebecca –

Please don’t tell me you want to DFA Robbie.

You are supposed to be the uber-optimist, no?

  25. NYY June 10th, 2008 at 3:25 pm

The list of accusation on Pete is growing as big as you know Clemens thing on Viagra. First he accused of going to fan site and trashing the fans(As Pete admitted already he is not an Yankee fan, he is a Giants fan). Now he is being accused of being Homophobic.

What next an online apology followed by defamation law suit on n o m a s s . c o m….May I suggest u hire Rusty Hardin as ur lawyer.

  26. TKinDC June 10th, 2008 at 3:26 pm

    “Pete-

Huh? It takes a lot of logical gymnastics to get to homophobia from a post about this Rocket Fuel. Don’t try so hard to be offended. It is just a humble baseball blog.

  27. jennifer- I got your back Girardi June 10th, 2008 at 3:26 pm

The Daily News is a joke with the exception of mark Fiensand. They sure know how to trash the Yankees, but yet want to make money off Yankee fans.

  28. Jake June 10th, 2008 at 3:27 pm

    Scott Brosius,

I don’t think Peter said anything himself that would be considered offensive. In fact he points out himself that he isn’t going make any lame jokes like some people above have already done.

    He’s just reporting the news.

  29. Fredo Corleone June 10th, 2008 at 3:28 pm

“I’m a little uncomfortable with this post,”

I’m a little uncomfortable that I know who Michael Kuzak was. Gettin’ O-L-D!!!!

  30. posada26 June 10th, 2008 at 3:29 pm

    /threadjack

Has Pete acknowledged the incident with that other website yet? Or does he think that just blocking people from entering posts with that website’s name will make it go away?

  31. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 June 10th, 2008 at 3:30 pm

tK: Oh hell no. I just mean that the Yankees have good cause to be concerned.

  32. Jake June 10th, 2008 at 3:30 pm

    NYY,

How do you know Peter is a Giants fan?

    Has he said as much?

  33. RockinDaBronx June 10th, 2008 at 3:31 pm

No wonder Waldman was so excited when Rawja arrived.

  34. Jake June 10th, 2008 at 3:31 pm

Can anyone link the site that Peter bashed A’s fans on?

    That doesn’t sound like something he’d do…

  35. NYY June 10th, 2008 at 3:32 pm

    Jake,

Pete did admit that he is a Giants fan more than once on this blog. I don’t know if it was joke or if he was serious but he did admit that he not a Yankee fan and that is a SF Giants fan.

  36. Jake June 10th, 2008 at 3:33 pm

    EDIT

ooops, may not have been A’s fans…any fans…

  37. NYY June 10th, 2008 at 3:34 pm

I think this is the link u r looking for.

Interesting. I love giving Giants fans a hard time…I live in NorCal and Giants fans are just obnoxious, especially when the topic of Barry Bonds and steroids comes into play :)

  39. murphydog June 10th, 2008 at 3:41 pm

“Roger must have really made someone at the Daily News angry.”

Richard Emery, McNamee’s big time NYC former ACLU lawyer, is very tight with Lupica, at least according to Lupica in his various columns early in this saga. Thus, exclusives are coming fast and furious to the Daily News direct from Camp McNamee in order to taint the jury pool in NY in case Emery is successful in having the case removed to Federal Court in NY.

As for Hardin not advising his client all that well, maybe so. Hindsight seems to be on the side of “Roger it’s time pull up the circus tent stakes and slink out of town.” (I still think Roger got slimed by Mitchell and will always think so). Nevertheless, Hardin’s advice was only as good as the info Hardin had to base it on. Fact: all clients LIE TO YOU. What’s worse, they are oddly reluctant to pay you to investigate them so you know the truth as well as the other side does. Not an excuse, just a part of the game.

  40. Al from BK June 10th, 2008 at 3:42 pm

Honestly the only person who needs to know this info is the Rockets wife or mistress quite frankly Im sick of the man and hearing of his wrong-doing.

  41. Jake June 10th, 2008 at 3:43 pm

    NYY,

    Thanks for the link.

Interesting. But hey, I’ve gone on this blog and bashed some of the stuff that Peter has written. I assume he just glosses over it and takes it as what it is: an opinion.

Why shouldn’t Peter be able to do the same thing?

Its not like he is a troll on a Boston site. He’s conveying his opinion and is entitled to it.

  42. Al from BK June 10th, 2008 at 3:50 pm

I kinda hate West coast games they go to at least 1:30 every time but I guess if the A’s gotta come to the Bronx then the Yanks gotta go to Oakland.

  43. kd June 10th, 2008 at 3:50 pm

I have a question about Cano. Has anyone ever gotten a straight answer from Girardi about what his issue is? Is it concentration or something physical. I know everyone knows he swings at the first two pitches, but they knew that last year and he ended up over .300.

It’s time to fix that guy

  44. Francis The Praying Mantis June 10th, 2008 at 3:51 pm

  45. Jake June 10th, 2008 at 3:52 pm

    Al,

I LOVE Yankee games on the West Coast because I can actually go to them!!!! :)

This is a benefit of living in the West…I don’t get hosed by the time difference.

  46. Jake June 10th, 2008 at 3:54 pm

    kd,

Cano’s problem is he goes out drinking every night and is up into the wee hours of the morning shagging. No joke. So I guess this would be a lack of focus cuz he sure as heck ain’t Mickey Mantle or Babe Ruth.

  47. Whitey Fraud June 10th, 2008 at 3:54 pm

I read somewhere that Viagra and Cialis are being used legitimately in other competitive sports as PEDs.

That said, I don’t need that stuff. I need ANTI-Viagra… if ya know what I mean.

  48. raymagnetic ®™ June 10th, 2008 at 3:57 pm

    “kd,

I have no idea if this is true. But for arguments sake let’s say it is true. Is this something that just developed this year? If not, why didn’t it affect him in previous years?

  49. Zach in Port Jeff (home at last) June 10th, 2008 at 3:57 pm

“That said, I don’t need that stuff. I need ANTI-Viagra… if ya know what I mean.”

Just do a google search on David Ortiz’s wife…should be enough anti-viagra for a lifetime.

  50. kd June 10th, 2008 at 3:57 pm

    Jake,

Are you serious? He and Melky are out clubbing all the time? That’s a shame, the veterans on this team ought to have a little chat with him.

  51. Al from BK June 10th, 2008 at 4:00 pm

Check out this video its Cano and Melk-man partying 2 days after the Yankees got embarassed in the ALDS I say trade these guys its very apparent what keeps Cano from concentrating he’d rather be at the club!

  54. TKinDC June 10th, 2008 at 4:04 pm

“Check out this video its Cano and Melk-man partying 2 days after the Yankees got embarassed in the ALDS ”

Of course- and let’s fine them every time they have a happy thought. I mean unless a player wins a championship every year he’s soft right?

  55. Russell NY June 10th, 2008 at 4:04 pm

“I would think that one of them are expendable (Melky or Gardner), especially with Ajax on the rise and expected in 2010?”

    100% right.

And the Yanks wouldn’t let one go without seeing what they both have in the majors first.

So do you sit Damon? No. Abreu? No. Melky? That might be it. Or they could rest players every few days. Either way, Gardner will get some playing time in the majors before they make a decision.

  56. Al from BK June 10th, 2008 at 4:05 pm

Melky is years from arbitration and a major league centerfielder who is an ok hitter and has a gun, Cano will intrigue someone despite this year and his contract is good I say get as much back as you can promote Brett and put Alberto Gonzalez at 2b(He wont have any “mental lapses”) I guarantee it

  57. Jake June 10th, 2008 at 4:05 pm

I interviewed a writer out of Jersey whose name I’ll leave off the site. Interviewed him for a research paper on steroids in baseball for grad school. He indicated that Cano goes out, gets hammered, picks up women, and drives home drunk all the time. The writer apparently lives a few doors down from an NY police officer who said that they have let Cano off more than once for this because he plays for the Yankees.

  58. Jake June 10th, 2008 at 4:07 pm

it might be hearsay and Cano has started off slowly before. the difference this year is that he has A LOT more money to throw around with that new contract.

Melky, I have no idea. I think he is just mediocre in general.

  59. raymagnetic ®™ June 10th, 2008 at 4:07 pm

“Check out this video its Cano and Melk-man partying 2 days after the Yankees got embarassed in the ALDS I say trade these guys its very apparent what keeps Cano from concentrating he’d rather be at the club!”

Yeah, how DARE they not be at home sobbing about losing in the playoffs!

  60. S.o.S.27 June 10th, 2008 at 4:08 pm

First off, Viagra as a PED. I hope Matsui hasnt heard of this yet. Immagine Viagra/video collection/wife drawing. He would be dl for the same injury he had before.

Second, I want someone to correct me if im wrong. But 2 of the past 3 years the Yankees have made a run in May by sweeping the A’s. One was in the 11-19 start. I cant remember what the other slow start record was. But in both cases the A’S were the fire that lit them.

  61. Al from BK June 10th, 2008 at 4:09 pm

TkinDC- You apparently dont get it they should have not been having any fun a few days after getting owned in the playoffs any players who actually care about winning and losing would not be out trying to grab attention 48 hours after they lost a painful playoff series, obviously you cant win every year but at least wait til the following weekend to party or at least pretend that losing that series hurt you as much as it hurt your fans!

  62. Al from BK June 10th, 2008 at 4:11 pm

I used to like Cano alot but hes sounding more and more like a me player and the Yanks messed up big giving him that contract

  63. murphydog June 10th, 2008 at 4:12 pm

    Jake:

So let’s see… that’s a “writer out of Jersey” who is repeating something that he was told by a “NY Police Officer” who claims “they” (other NY police officers?) have let Cano off a few times b/c he plays for the Yankees.

Reliable. Say, did you find any first hand sources for your “research paper?”

  64. raymagnetic ®™ June 10th, 2008 at 4:12 pm

    Al from BK,

Are you 92 years old? Only an old grump would be so angry about two players who weren’t even 25 last year partying after their season was over.

Are you jealous because it’s not you?

  65. murphydog June 10th, 2008 at 4:14 pm

I think Al from BK is really Al from MA.

  66. TKinDC June 10th, 2008 at 4:15 pm

    Al from BK -

Oh! You’re serious? I’m sorry, I assumed you were just kidding about what you were saying because it was so idiotic.

When do you think the required mourning period ends for a player? Does a groundhog come out of his hole and say – “You can go clubbing now”

  67. Al from BK June 10th, 2008 at 4:15 pm

Dude I’m 22 and Im upset because I was pissed for about 2 weeks when the Yanks lost and these dudes were out dubbing 2 days later it dont seem right and plus if I wanted to dance with trashy latina girls I could just hang out on the corner in my neighborhood

  68. S.o.S.27 June 10th, 2008 at 4:16 pm

Someone stated yesterday that Cano is hitting over 300 since May 6th. If thats true i dont see the problem. Accept of coarse his first pitch swings. He made 2 dazzling plays in yesterdays games. I was never a big fan of his nor payed attention to his defense. But when he makes lazy errore. I must say though he makes hard plays look easy. Let see how June turns out.

Melky is still playing acceptional defense. I think he’s covering more ground this year than last. If Gardner comes up. I dont think it should be to replace Melky.

  69. 2008 Yankees June 10th, 2008 at 4:16 pm

Last year the Yankees were 30-31 on June 10th. When July 1st rolled around, they were 37-41. It wasn’t until the All Star break that things started to click. In the Oakland series you refer to, the A’s took 2 of 3 and outscored the Yankees 19-7. They then started to win a little more consistant but it wasn’t until July 15th that they went over .500 and STAYED over .500

Hopefully they don’t wait as long since this race is still WIDE OPEN.

  70. Francis The Praying Mantis June 10th, 2008 at 4:17 pm

yeah if i were a 24 year old millionaire that plays for the greatest sports franchise, on the biggest stage in the greatest city…Id be home playign tetris when I wasnt playing baseball….Im sure Jeter was always studying tape too.

  72. Jake June 10th, 2008 at 4:19 pm

    Murphy,

I’m not joking. And as I said after, it could be hearsay. But let’s consider the picture that Peter posted before the season started of Cano in a club. Now we’re hearing about Cano and Melky out boozin after they got blasted by Cleveland. Put the pieces together. I’m sure you love Cano and in fact I am fan of him, but when you get paid the big dollars, you better produce. He isn’t.

I’m sure Jeter, A-Rod, etc go out and get hammered and shag and all that fun stuff, but they have credentials and are consistent.

Oh, and I got an “A” on my research paper which I also interviewed Peter for. Put that in your pipe and smoke it.

  73. raymagnetic ®™ June 10th, 2008 at 4:20 pm

Dude, get a life. It’s baseball for God’s sake. It took you 2 weeks to get over a team that couldn’t care less about you?

To paraphrase Sonny from Bx. Tale, do you think Cano cares if you can pay your rent? Nobody cares kid.

  74. Al from BK June 10th, 2008 at 4:20 pm

Thats the problem Cano wasnt kept hungry when they gave him that contract now what does he have to play for “The love of the game” that hardly exists anymore especially for young players you got guys my age holding out to get a bigger contract when back in the day guys would sell their soul for a piece of the bigs

  75. raymagnetic ®™ June 10th, 2008 at 4:21 pm

    Also, Scott Brosius, dude, relax.

  77. Jake June 10th, 2008 at 4:23 pm

    SOS,

I agree with you. The catch is that in New York when you sign a big contract, you’re expected to do more, fair or not. Its the way it goes.

I think we can all agree that everyone on here wants to see Cano do well. The Yankees’ mediocrity is no more his fault than it is the rest of the offense. The whole team isn’t getting it done.

Wow, that is a hilarious mental picture of Jeter sitting at home playing tetris on one TV while reels of Pedro Martinez pitching are playing on another TV.

  78. Jake June 10th, 2008 at 4:24 pm

    raymagnetic,

Uhhh ray. I still havnt gotten over 2001 9th inning and the 2004 callapse. Ya think i need to see a shrink?

    2008 Yankees,
Was it maybe the year that Wang and Cano got called up? I could have swore that they swept them in May. Could be wrong. Thanks for the info.

  80. Al from BK June 10th, 2008 at 4:25 pm

I dont know what you guys are trying to say but “real” fans are typically disappointed when their team loses in the playoffs maybe I was exaggerating on the 2 weeks thing but it wasnt just 2 days, maybe they were partying to rid their memory of the loss I dunno the guys but it definitely seems like Cano is way more anxious on offense and lazy on defense this yeat

  81. Potch June 10th, 2008 at 4:27 pm

“Rusty Hardin isn’t exactly Michael Kuzak when it comes to legal advice.”

No, more like Ted Buckland of Scrubs…

  82. murphydog June 10th, 2008 at 4:30 pm

    Jake:

Glad to hear about your research paper.

Look, I don’t know a single cop not prone to telling stories like a gossip queen. And that includes some close friends of mine.

You have to take some of that talk with a large grain of salt, bro. There are probably quite a few reasons for Cano’s apparent lack of clarity. But common sense says that the club would be aware of chronic drinking and partying till dawn. They did their homework before giving him that contract.

Cano may have been let off for, I’m assuming it was DUI, but it’s a huge risk for a cop to let an obviously drunk driver off, famous or not. If he gets into an accident or gets stopped again and it comes out that he was previously stopped, that first cop is losing his job. No cop is giving up his job for Robbie Cano.

  83. pat June 10th, 2008 at 4:32 pm

    Whitey Fraud

Can’t take a WAGs list comparison of Yanks and Sox seriously if none of the Jeter Maxim 6 are included.

    3 things
Still think Posadas wife is the hottest.

I cant believe Pedroia found a women shorter than him to marry.

Maybe Kennedy is having problems locating his pitches because of those 2 porn staches above his eye brows. Cant hurt to trim them.

  85. Jake June 10th, 2008 at 4:35 pm

    Murphy,

Ya, I hear what you are saying. It could be hearsay, I’ve said this three times now. And I agree that the club would be aware of any drinking issues, but do you think they’d be telling the public about it? I doubt it and would hope they wouldn’t.

The cop bit, I don’t know…but you do raise a good point about the gossip that goes around in NY. I mean, look what we’re all doing on here.

I think Cano will be a stud and put the pieces together sooner than most people think with consideration to a full season of productivity. There is a learning curve for sure and he is young.

  86. Jake June 10th, 2008 at 4:36 pm

If these partying rumors are true. All i have to say is that their lucky that “THE BOSS” is no longer running things. We would have a new “credit card commercial 2″staring the 2 amigos and the man himself.

    S.os.,

If the Yankees don’t make the playoffs this year I’m available to listen to your problems for a fee over multiple sessions. :)

    Jake:

“And I agree that the club would be aware of any drinking issues, but do you think they’d be telling the public about it?”

No they wouldn’t tell the public. But they wouldn’t give him the big contract either if there were any real doubts before this year. It’s not Mantle’s Yankees anymore. IMO, if Cano is boozing now, after getting the big money, they would slam him into a wall. Projected .300 hitter with great glove or not, he would be traded for making a mockery of Big Stein’s largesse.

It could just be the pressure of the big bucks. IMO, Cano is “young” for his age, the diametric opposite of Jeter when he came up. He could have used more Bowa this season, but he’s got to grow up sometime. Maybe A-Rod can mentor him a little more.

I look forward to the Yankees breaking the bats out for the rest of the season starting tonight in Oakland where I will physically plant my backside in a seat, clad in pinstripes, pride, and a desire to witness utter domination.

  91. Frank Discussion June 10th, 2008 at 4:53 pm

Cano and Cabrera should enjoy themselves. They are young, rich and play for the most famous sports franchise in history. I’m jealous, when I was their age I was stationed in South Korea freezing my butt off on the DMZ. As long as they both act responsibly, I don’t see any issue with their actions. My only concern is with how they perform on the field.

when I was cano and cabreras age I would sniff an eight ball a night….ah, the good old days

Re: Cano and Melky partying two days after losing to Cleveland.

How do we know they did not have a conversation like:

Cano: Man, I am still bummed about losing that series.

Melky: Yeah, I’ve been sittin around for two days staring at the floor. I can’t believe we lost.

Cano: Me neither. Cleaning out my locker today was awful. I just can’t believe we lost to those guys.

Melky: Lets go to a club tonight – getting out could do us some good. Cheer us up a little

    Cano: Yeah, all right

I seriously doubt they were saying “WOOHOO! WE LOST! SEASON’S OVER! LETS PARTY!”

  96. Francis The Praying Mantis June 10th, 2008 at 5:03 pm

I am familiar with the term from “training and experience.” I was just joshing you. (The wink smiley and all).

  98. Francis The Praying Mantis June 10th, 2008 at 5:14 pm

I know murphy, I was making a joke by putting it out there so clearly.

  99. Zach in Port Jeff June 10th, 2008 at 5:35 pm

    Whitey Fraud,

Not being shallow…just making a joke…the use of Ortiz was as arbitrary as anyone other player.

The subject heading of the blog entry is about friggin’ VIAGRA. How can you not be shallow?

Jeez. get off your high horse!

  100. TEC June 10th, 2008 at 6:27 pm

so perhaps we now know why Rafael Palmeiro was doing those Viagra commercials….

  101. rover June 10th, 2008 at 6:50 pm

So, exactly how long did Mo mope around after that last hr. my guess until the next pitch. what is done is done. Melky and Cano partying, my guess that is as much a homecoming as opposed to celebrating anything bball related. They’re kids, rich talented kids, kids none the less.

For those who do not know…

Peter is a Patriots fan. He is not a Giants fan. He has written that he grew up with season tickets in his family, so he has been a Patriot since waaaaaay back before they were winning championships…

    Or taping games. We think.

Go back and read his posts around the Super Bowl. But he was a very good loser. Gave much props to the G-Men.

I like all the fans who say they are sick of hearing about Clemens. You weren’t sick of hearing about it when he was roided up winning all those games for the Yankees. Now it is time to pay the piper. The Yankees deserve all bad publicity associated with Clemens. They had no reason to bring in this piece of Red Sox trash, coming off the greatest season in baseball history in 1998. They didn’t need him – they would have won it the next two years anyway with the team they had – and they go dump Wells, who helped them win it all cleanly and who loved being a Yankee and was a great player here. Then this bozo Roger comes in, taints Pettitte by hooking him up with McNamee and who know who else Clemens got involved with his “workouts.” Taints the whole run. Thanks Roger. Bring on the bad pub – Cashman and Co. deserve it.

    Clemens = worst Yankee ever

  106. Wendy M June 10th, 2008 at 8:42 pm

Yeah and I bet they knew he was juicing (Giambi too) when they signed him and looked the other way.
