Game 67: Yankees at Athletics

YANKEES
Damon LF
Jeter SS
Abreu RF
Rodriguez 3B
Matsui DH
Giambi 1B
Cano 2B
Cabrera CF
Molina C
Pettitte LHP

Andy Pettitte (LHP, 5-5, 4.99) vs. the Oakland hitters.

Joe Blanton (3-8, 4.15) vs. the New York hitters.

Notes: Bobby Abreu has a seven-game hit streak going (12 of 28). … Jorge Posada is 5 of 19 since he came off the disabled list. … The Yankees are 14 for 61 with RISP in the last seven games. … The bullpen has allowed four runs in its last 21.2 innings. … Pettitte is 2-4 with a 6.20 ERA over nine starts. Opponents have hit .320 against him.

Back later with some updates.

UPDATE, 8:46 p.m.: Phil Hughes had another bone scan. He will start a throwing program in two weeks. So that’s basically the end of June. We could see him in mid to late August assuming all goes well.

Remember Jonathan Albaladejo? Turns out he has a stress fracture in his elbow in addition to his other issues. He’s done for the season.

UPDATE, 11:31 p.m.: Sorry for the lack of updates, been busy writing. There hasn’t been much to say about this game, anyway. It’s a repeat of what we’ve seen dozens of times this season. This is Chapter 32 of “Yankees Pitch Well, Can’t Score.”

UPDATE, 11:39 p.m.: Big spot for Godzilla on his birthday. Bases loaded, no outs, Yanks down 1-0. He can crush the A’s like fleeing citizens here.

UPDATE, 11:42 p.m.: Happy Birthday, Hideki. 4-1 Yanks.

UPDATE, 11:52 p.m.: Great job by Pettitte through six innings and he looks strong. Can they ride him for another two innings?

four runs in 21.2 innings? Sounds like we really need Joba (sarcasm intended).

  2. jrealty (formerly Jesse) June 12th, 2008 at 7:16 pm

A.P. to the bullpen when Hughes/Kennedy or whomever comes back? Could be a win/win for everyone. Apparently he’s not a 6 or 7 inning pitcher anymore. Maybe he could be more effective in a shorter role. Especially if they are looking to make a deal for C.C.

  3. Joe from Long Island June 12th, 2008 at 7:17 pm

What was that movie – “If It’s Tuesday, It Must Be Belgium.”?

  4. MoBoy June 12th, 2008 at 7:17 pm

Like to see this bullpen in the 8th in the post season.Lets see if we still want Joba.

  5. Joe from Long Island June 12th, 2008 at 7:17 pm

Oops, Pete already corrected his post.

  6. Eugie June 12th, 2008 at 7:22 pm

Another day of Duncan sitting on the bench….. I don’t get Girardi.

  7. stuart June 12th, 2008 at 7:22 pm

I like Molina batting 9th. he is so slow and so inept put him 9th.

again can they add a body to the bench for moeller before the NL games??????

garder or the AG or both!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

while your at it how about adios Hawkins and add some guy named Melancon…

  8. stuart June 12th, 2008 at 7:23 pm

eugie where the hell should Duncan play?? Catcher????

Girardi used Betemit the other day instead of Duncan.. Duncan needs to be ready if or when he gets a shot….

  9. jennifer- I got your back Girardi June 12th, 2008 at 7:23 pm

Sox sorry to say farewell to Fenway for awhile

This headline was on mlb.com So I went to check the soxs schedule do see what ‘awhile’ meant. SIX ENTIRE GAMES I guess the writer of the headline is a sox fan.

Never mind that the Yankees went on a 3 game west coast trip.

  10. jennifer- I got your back Girardi June 12th, 2008 at 7:24 pm

Bob and 2 of those runs are from Mo.

  11. S.A.- No pain..no gain June 12th, 2008 at 7:26 pm

“Pettitte is 2-4 with a 6.20 ERA over nine starts. Opponents have hit .320 against him.”

    Damn :(

Can we please see good Andy tonight?

  12. jennifer- I got your back Girardi June 12th, 2008 at 7:27 pm

I have a good feeling about Andy tonight.

  13. Fran June 12th, 2008 at 7:29 pm

Hope Andy pitches well. If the Yanks win tonight they take 2 of 3 and win the series.

  14. Eugie June 12th, 2008 at 7:29 pm

“eugie where the hell should Duncan play?? Catcher????

Girardi used Betemit the other day instead of Duncan.. Duncan needs to be ready if or when he gets a shot….”

Duncan hasn’t had an AB in almost 2 weeks. If he’s not going to be used, why is he up here?

  15. The Last Yankee Fanâ„¢ (a.k.a. ERâ„¢) June 12th, 2008 at 7:29 pm

    Andy should retire now.

I think he’ll give up at least 8 runs tonight.

Wow. I’m speechless reading this crap. Do you people think before you type?

  17. Luke NY June 12th, 2008 at 7:33 pm

Duncan should be in Scranton and a middle infielder should be here.

At least get him some at bats.

  18. Laura - Say No to the West Coast!! June 12th, 2008 at 7:37 pm

Why is Ron Jeremy at 1B tonight after that God awful throw yesterday?

  19. stuart June 12th, 2008 at 7:37 pm

Eugie the AL does not use there bench much especially the yanks. I agree the Yanks should have a middle infielder on the squad..

Duncan is here is someone get s hurt basically…

the whole roster is a bunch of parts that do not fit. no speed on the bench, no good d off the bench, etc..

  20. stuart June 12th, 2008 at 7:39 pm

giambi is at first base because why would the yanks care about D they obviously have not for at least 3 yrs. and our other 1B are significantly worse hitters and not exactly tino around the bag.

    YECH

  21. Marilyn Chambers June 12th, 2008 at 7:42 pm

Why is Ron Jeremy at 1B tonight after that God awful throw yesterday?
    …………………………………………………..

Good idea, Laura. Cashman should sign the real Ron Jeremy.

  22. ?????? June 12th, 2008 at 7:44 pm

None of the spare parts of this team fit. Just like trying to put a square peg in a round hole.

  23. Anyone but Farnsworth June 12th, 2008 at 7:46 pm

Once again I am asking if you guys have any job opportunites for a college student for the summer.

  24. Laura - Say No to the West Coast!! June 12th, 2008 at 7:46 pm

“Good idea, Laura. Cashman should sign the real Ron Jeremy.”

If he can catch, throw to 2B and hit for average, I wouldn’t have a problem with it.

  25. The Last Yankee Fanâ„¢ (a.k.a. ERâ„¢) June 12th, 2008 at 7:47 pm

Boston Sux now 15 games over 0.500

  26. Will K June 12th, 2008 at 7:51 pm

    Send Andy to the bullpen.

Should they have sent Jeter to the minors after his slump?

I hope that was a joke.

And we all know Duncan should be in Scranton. He’s not playing with righty pitching that’s for sure.

  27. jennifer- I got your back Girardi June 12th, 2008 at 7:51 pm

The Yankees are the only team playing a night get away game today. What a shock! And everyone says the Yankees aren’t the ‘hot’ team anymore. If we weren’t we wouldn’t be playing these stupid 7pm local time games, and would have played at 1 local time.

  28. miggs June 12th, 2008 at 7:52 pm

Oh it looks like Stuart is here.

    Bye bye all!

    Enjoy the nonsense.

  29. jennifer- I got your back Girardi June 12th, 2008 at 7:52 pm

Did everyone know that ball games end in the 6th inning apparently in er’s world it is.

  30. Fran June 12th, 2008 at 7:52 pm

Laura – he’s going to have to play first base this weekend with no DH. Maybe Girardi is having him “practice”!

  31. Will K June 12th, 2008 at 7:53 pm

    # The Last Yankee Fanâ„¢ (a.k.a. ERâ„¢) June 12th, 2008 at 7:47 pm

Boston Sux now 15 games over 0.500

With that bullpen, I’d let the last few innings play out here before I get all super confident.

  32. Jason NJ June 12th, 2008 at 7:54 pm

I’m trying to decide who is more negative and pessimistic.

    SJ44 or stuart

    Real tough call

  33. G. Love June 12th, 2008 at 7:59 pm

Pettitte is going to pitch a gem tonight folks. Put it in the books.

  34. V June 12th, 2008 at 8:04 pm

Hey, randy l, your boy Livan is currently losing 6-0 in the 3rd ;-)

  35. Blargh June 12th, 2008 at 8:06 pm

I’ve benched Pettitte on my fantasy team this week; he’ll rock tonight.

  36. V June 12th, 2008 at 8:17 pm

“I’ve benched Pettitte on my fantasy team this week; he’ll rock tonight.”

Please let him. I had a 5.00 ERA after yesterday vs. my opponent’s 1.50 (my Kazmir, Lackey, Backe (forgot to bench him)) vs. his Verlander, Kershaw). Lol.

  37. Don Vito A. Bellamo June 12th, 2008 at 8:17 pm

The Last Yankee Fanâ„¢ (a.k.a. ERâ„¢) ….you are truly daft. If you look up the definition of dolt, there is a very good chance, in your case, it will be self portrait time.

  39. mel June 12th, 2008 at 8:23 pm

    Jennifer,

I heard that some surprise team (Pirates?) is undefeated when leading after 7 innings.

Anyone know or can figure that out? I know it’s a perennial cellar dweller in the NL.

  40. jennifer- I got your back Girardi June 12th, 2008 at 8:28 pm

Mel- Believe it or not they have an offense. I had them in my 13 run game, and they were just recently shut out! That team can score!

  41. rconn23 June 12th, 2008 at 8:32 pm

Again, I don’t understand the negativity towards SJ44. He’s clearly a fan who cares a lot about the team.

He brings up things about the team which happen to be true -like their failure to hit with RISP and defensive glitches.
Just because he, or anyone else, doesn’t wave pom-poms when the team plays like garbage, doesn’t mean that they’re being negative.

“Again, I don’t understand the negativity towards SJ44. He’s clearly a fan who cares a lot about the team.”

He’s a pompous know it all who never has anything positive to say about the team. That makes him “care”?? God forbid he stopped caring. Imagine his posts.

  44. Victor Nice June 12th, 2008 at 8:36 pm

Love how the scrubs here give up on Andy P after a few so so starts.

Way to be reactionary fans. Have fun trying to jump back on the bandwagon in a week or two.

True. I’m just not sure if papelbon will be able to hold it if needed.

    You are a baseball einstein.

  47. Savalas June 12th, 2008 at 8:38 pm

That is the extent of V’s contributions here.

Updating us on fantasy trades that he “almost” made and saying that Melky is as good as Beltran.

I couldn’t make this stuff up if I tried.

  48. Meyerson June 12th, 2008 at 8:39 pm

    james,

How’s Okajima been this yr? Timlin? Delcarmen? Hello?? How did Hansen do last weekend??

    Crickets…..

  49. Blargh June 12th, 2008 at 8:39 pm

Congratulations V, you’ve got your own stalker now.

  50. Whiff (Cano's bat) June 12th, 2008 at 8:42 pm

Did some analysis of the Yankees performance to date and checked the history books a little. While this team is performing like a .500 team, chances are they will finish above .500 by years end. Still think they will miss the playoffs and only win 82 games but these are words I will be more than happy to eat.

That said, in the short term, they have split 2 with Minny and KC, took 2 of 3 from Toronto, if they win tonight it will be 2 of 3 from Oakland. This is a good sign, albeit slowly progressing and somewhat stagnant. Would look better if they could string together 4 wins in a row before dropping 1.

Anyway, Pettitte throws a decent game tonight, Yanks win this one 5-3. Mo gets another save.

Look for ARod, Jeter, and Melk to have big games at the plate.

  51. Gar Gar June 12th, 2008 at 8:46 pm

SJ44 and stuart are 110% correct about this team.

They stink and they aren’t getting any better anytime soon.

    Sometimes negative is right.

  52. whozat June 12th, 2008 at 8:48 pm

“saying that Melky is as good as Beltran.”

You are incredibly dense. No matter how many times people explain to you what V ACTUALLY said, you don’t bother to listen.

  53. Patrick (the good one) June 12th, 2008 at 8:51 pm

“You are incredibly dense. No matter how many times people explain to you what V ACTUALLY said, you don’t bother to listen.”

    whozat,

There’s no point in giving a serious response to these people. They are either too dumb to comprehend what you are saying or they are just trying to get a rise out of you.

  54. AlbanyYankee June 12th, 2008 at 8:52 pm

I benched Pettitte on my fantasy team as well. Figured the Yankees could use the boost.

  55. AlbanyYankee June 12th, 2008 at 8:53 pm

Oh, and I started Joe Blanton on my fantasy team as well. And I have Billy Wagner. You see where I’m going with this, I presume…,

  56. Al from BK June 12th, 2008 at 8:53 pm

The Melky Beltran thing is really ridiculous why is this discussion coming up when the kids having an awful year tell him to hit seven homeruns in a playoff series and we’ll talk. Mr. Reliable Phil Hughes out until late August isnt anyone else concerned that he had the exact same type of DL stint (length wise) last year I dunno two years in a row of that seems like a trend and this guys too young to have a Moises Alou type reputation.

  57. Virgin Islands June 12th, 2008 at 8:54 pm

    Meyerson,

Take off the pin striped glasses. The Red Sox are 42-27.

  58. Al from BK June 12th, 2008 at 9:00 pm

I think Joba’s start tomorrow will be the highlight of the Yanks week, at least I hope so anybody know what Girardi’s gonna let him throw tomorrow 90-95 is my guess.

  59. jennifer- I got your back Girardi June 12th, 2008 at 9:00 pm

    :( Too bad on Johnathan

So does that mean they still see a hot spot in Phil’s scan? Another two weeks?

  60. Yardley June 12th, 2008 at 9:00 pm

A win tonight would be nice. Andy is due for a good outing. He is too much of a pro.

  61. Meyerson June 12th, 2008 at 9:01 pm

The Sox have a good record. Doesn’t mean their bullpen besides Papelbon is any good.

  62. mel June 12th, 2008 at 9:01 pm

What’s with the Yankee on Yankee hate crimes here? At least wait until they lose.

Channel your hate elsewhere. How about the Celtics?

  63. Fred Brooklyn June 12th, 2008 at 9:03 pm

    Melky or Beltran?

    Ummm …ok I guess.

  64. Michael June 12th, 2008 at 9:04 pm

DEREK JETER IS NOW AND WILL BE AN OFFENSIVE CANCER ON THIS TEAM. OUT OF BLIND LOYALTY THEY WILL STICK WITH MR NO CLUTCH TILL DEATH DO US PART. TERRIBLE OFFENSE AND WEAK DEFENSE.

  65. D&D June 12th, 2008 at 9:04 pm

I like the Melkman but I doubt he is starting in CF in 2009.

  66. jennifer- I got your back Girardi June 12th, 2008 at 9:04 pm

They are Met fans trying to grasp at straws.

  67. michael June 12th, 2008 at 9:05 pm

our best pen arms have gone down. if alba and bruney were here we’d have a slightly better pen. nevertheless, the situation needs to be addresssed – time to call up melancon. what is cash waiting for on this pen?

  68. Doreen June 12th, 2008 at 9:05 pm

Disappointing news about Albaladejo. It’s good to hear, though, that Hughes will start throwing pretty soon.

  69. Larry in West June 12th, 2008 at 9:06 pm

Michael, you got a lot in common with the defeatists here.

  70. stuart June 12th, 2008 at 9:06 pm

sorry I am suppose to say watching this slow, unathletic, plodding, no clutch hitting team is a great watch….

IT IS NOT.. When Jeter plays like Jeter should and the same goes for pettitte and cano then I will be happy.

Also if they dump or trade hawkins and Kyle I will not complain the rest of the yr.

Every time the yanks call up a young guy they gain good will with fans like myself and everytime they eliminte a older guy with no upside the same…

but let’s worry about shelly DUncan not getting enough AB’s…………

  71. stark June 12th, 2008 at 9:07 pm

    Hughes is injury prone.

  72. stuart June 12th, 2008 at 9:08 pm

Myerson is right the sux pen is avg.. hansen is up and down, same with delcarmen, okajima is terrible with men on base, the old guy from toronto is terrible, and papelbon is very good….

  73. Will K June 12th, 2008 at 9:09 pm

Duncan had enough chances. He couldn’t hit and they think his defense at 1b is awful. This is the Yankees. You don’t get 400 at bats to prove you are a hitter especially when you have been in the minors for seven years.

Fact of life in the Bronx. I wish he had hit right away because I think Betemit isn’t good.

Duncan is wasting away on the bench. He needs to get at bats in Scranton and we need a middle infielder and some speed.

  74. Meyerson June 12th, 2008 at 9:11 pm

Basically, the Sox pen is like ours. We both got one reliable guy out there. They just have better SP than we do. SP is the key to any team and we just don’t have it.

  75. LI Mike June 12th, 2008 at 9:12 pm

Really looking forward to the return of the fastball that tops 92 on good days and those prescription Oakleys.

  76. Matty June 12th, 2008 at 9:16 pm

Anyone that can watch this team every night and be happy with how the season is going is deluded.

Blind faith in turning it around doesn’t work either. This isn’t last year or the year before that. It is a different team.

The only saving grace is that the AL isn’t good this year.

  77. stark June 12th, 2008 at 9:16 pm

Hughes did not impress me. I wish we had Santana.

  78. MoBoy June 12th, 2008 at 9:16 pm

Hey Hughes can be our next Pavano. At least Hughes will be here in spirit next year.

But hey we get Kennedy 9ERa in two weeks. No we don’t need a trade.

  79. PTRS 08 June 12th, 2008 at 9:16 pm

Hughes for Sabbathia if it comes to it?

I ask because it’s being rumored that Boston and or LA have and may be willing to offer such high ceiling prospect/young talents as Kemp/Loney/Masterson/Lester etc…

If we can’t get it done for IPK + Prospect/s and it takes Phil “(In The very DISTANT future)” do you do it?

“2 month rental” or not we’d atleast give some new life to our chances this year and if successful would most certainly be assured exclusive contract window ala the other lefty cy young guy currently pitching in queens.

God save the mets fans ;-)

  80. Al from BK June 12th, 2008 at 9:16 pm

Boston won again Dammit when will the Sox start to hit some bumps. If they can win without their best hitter and Ace then they are gonna get to 100 wins easily.

  81. Salvie June 12th, 2008 at 9:17 pm

I bet no one knows the Tampa area better than Phil. He has two spring trainings every season it seems.

  82. MoBoy June 12th, 2008 at 9:17 pm

I mean at least Pavano will be here in spirit next year.

    I get the two confused.

  83. Al from BK June 12th, 2008 at 9:21 pm

Hughes really gets on my nerves he is the face of the Santana non-trade and he has done very little to prove he belongs in the majors. This kid should have been Minnesota’s headache Im really sick of his constant injuries, it is starting to look like hes out for the year now.

  84. V June 12th, 2008 at 9:23 pm

“Congratulations V, you’ve got your own stalker now.”

Eh, he’s been my stalker for awhile now. Changes his name every day or two to keep it fresh, lol.

  85. V June 12th, 2008 at 9:24 pm

Anyone who’s going to call Hughes ‘injury prone’ immediately hits my book as a total idiot who’s never paid attention to baseball.

If his injuries were elbow or shoulder? K, you’d have a point.

But come on, fractured rib? WTF?

  86. V June 12th, 2008 at 9:26 pm

Kemp and Loney are solid prospects, and Masterson a solid 2nd tier pitching prospect (that’s not a knock on him Kennedy’s a 3rd tier prospect), but I’d value Hughes over all three on that list.

Scouts weren’t high on Hughes because of Yankees’ hype. He’s the real deal. We’re talking Lincecum, Kershaw, etc. level prospect. You don’t trade that for a rental. Would you trade Jesus Montero for a rental? No way in this world. Hughes is much closer to being major league ready, and has the same ceiling. Kemp and Loney, good as they are (I’d take them without a doubt), are not that caliber prospects.

  87. Al from BK June 12th, 2008 at 9:26 pm

V- An injury is an injury I didnt specify arm injury the fact that he is on the DL makes him injury prone. I didnt call him Mark Prior/Kerry Wood but he has had more than his share of injuries in just over a year of ML ball.

  88. Al from BK June 12th, 2008 at 9:28 pm

Just a side note Lakers owning the Celts 22-7 4 minutes to go in the first quarter.

  89. Pierce - 2008 Best Actress Academy Award June 12th, 2008 at 9:29 pm

It seems the Yankees need to have some calcium supplements. All these stress fractures point to weak bones.

  90. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 12 ) June 12th, 2008 at 9:30 pm

Relax about the Red Sox fact is that teams been playing in Fenway for awhile now, the next few weeks in thier schedule is a bit tough. And thier players have yet to serve the suspensions from the Tampa game.

That news on Phil must be good news. As for the Shelley Duncan arguement I agree trade him or send him down.

This place has turned into a waste land, between the people posting who keep talking about that dirtdogs wanna be, the people crying that Hughes is injury prone and the people still crying about not getting Johan.

Get over it already! How many starts did it take Johan to have a ‘great’ start? And he couldn’t even make it past the 7th!! So please!

  93. Al from BK June 12th, 2008 at 9:36 pm

Hughes has had 3 separate injuries in 13 months of ML service. The first which we are all familiar with was against the Texas Rangers the game in which he was throwing a no hitter he pulled his hammy. Then a few weeks before he was to start a throwing program he injured his ankle during rehab drills. Finally this year after a month of pitching to a 9.00 ERA he suffers a rib fracture all three of those were not wear and tear injuries they were freak injuries that is what concerns me most about Hughes.

    at least i hope.

  95. PTRS 08 June 12th, 2008 at 9:38 pm

    V

Do you believe like I do that the team that gets him this year most likely is assured the easiest path to sign him?

    My point

(first) is that if he goes to the sox and they win another ring logic dictates he stays…No?
Yes I’m sure Hank will offer him something insane if and when he hits the market but the fact remains
    A. CC is not a Boras client
    B. The Sox are the new “Yankees”
    C. They have talent with much better ML records in their system

(second) I believe our front office is going to have to make some serious sacrifices regarding “the farm” in order to get anything better than the immortal Paul Byrd or Rand Wolf’s of the world.

Putting Hughes back “on the table” admittedly could hurt…(FYI I still like the kid)but also be the last chance for this season and possibly more.

PTRS – I don’t think the Yankees should ‘go for broke’ by trading a top prospect for a rental, and I don’t want to give CC a 7-8 year deal.

The Tigers went for broke. As did the Mets.

    The Red Sox have not.

The difference btw the Yanks and the Sawx right now, is that the Sawx beat who they’re supposed to beat and the Yanks seem to beat only themselves.

Time for the Yanks to prove they can go on a winning streak… 8 games in a row… let’s start now!

For the YES-less, Melky sliding update:

The coaching staff has talked to Melky and have told him that the slides into 1st are not a good idea. Girardi called it “over-hustling” and he would prefer him not doing it.

Today is Hideki’s B-day. Happy Birthday to him.

  108. Al from BK June 12th, 2008 at 9:46 pm

I’m saying that this young man has suffered many injuries
that he did not bring upon himself not by overthrowing, not over-use just by a seemingly bad luck streak. Thats all I was saying not his fault but definitely some sort of bad luck.

  109. stark June 12th, 2008 at 9:47 pm

Hughes is 21. He should be pitching 160+ innings here. Yet he can’t stay off the DL. Hamstrings, ribs, God knows whats next.

He hasn’t pitched a full season since he was drafted here. He’s injury prone. Not exactly a workhorse.

Defend him all you want but the facts are facts. I like Hughes but he isn’t what was advertised.

Would help if he could actually pitch and not be sitting on his tush.

  110. jennifer- I got your back Girardi June 12th, 2008 at 9:47 pm

Everything I’ve seen points to Hal wanting to lower the payroll. The luxury tax makes it so the Yankees pay 140% more than any other team to sign someone, everything else the same.

Would you want the Yankees to give Pavano $12M per for 4 years after the season? I mean, it’s not your money.

Too bad the Yankees weren’t willing to pony up for Zito, I mean, he totally was the ace they were missing.

SJ44, while arrogant, is one of the few people with any common sense on this board. The majority of posters have rose-colored glasses on, which prevent them from seeing the vulnerabilities on this team. They are the people who believe everything they hear on YES, and who think Robinson Cano really is just as good as Rod Carew.

It’s unfortunate that the lightweights like Jennifer et al. have the most time on their hands to post.

  117. murphydog June 12th, 2008 at 9:49 pm

Just saying: Junior Griffey hits number 600 and you can hear a pin drop. Manny and A-Rod sure got more play for their 500th. (Thome and Thomas not so much). What gives?

    1) Junior has been injured so many times nobody was really sure he was still playing;

    2) He plays in Cincinnati;

    3) It was 600, not 714 or 755 or Bonds’ supposed record;

    4) Junior is not the youngest to do it, not the only to do it.

    5) Junior probably won’t stay healthy long enough to touch Aaron or Bonds;

    6) Oh yeah, and steroids took the fun out of all of this HR record stuff.

IMO, Boston’s play even with their injuries should make the Yankees feel humiliated. The Sox haven’t missed a beat with backups coming up clutch and taking up the slack while NY continues to play lazy, uninspired baseball.

And I wish the anger on this blog was reflected by anybody in the Yankee organization. Nobody…not Hank, not that idiot Cashman, not Girardi, and certainly none of the players…seem the least bit concerned with their shoddy play this season.

The team needs starting pitching. And unfortunately in todays economics starting pitching costs money. You deal with it. But you ain’t winning titles without great starting pitching.

We pay Andy and Moose 16 and 12 mill. Like they won’t give CC 20? They paid 46 for Igawa for petessake.

I wouldn’t mind him right now in a trade.

    Sabathia-Wang-Joba-Andy-Moose

Now that is a Yankee rotation. If it costs them Kennedy and 2 others so be it.

Chill. He is right – you aren’t the Yankees. You could be called a fan, or even a sucker, pushover, or fool, if you routinely waste your hard-earned money (assuming you work), but you’re not a Yankee. You are a fan – and there is a big difference. The players laugh at people like you. You think Cano thinks about you as he jogs to first after a groundout or lazily hotdogs a pop-up? Or if Arod thinks about you after stranding 2 runners in scoring position to end an inning? You’re only a pissant fan. Just like the people in Kansas City.

  140. Al from BK June 12th, 2008 at 9:59 pm

This injury to Hughes has far reaching implications it has set his development back an entire year. Now best case scenario he gets 80 innings this year next year he can only go 130 as opposed to the 180 if he had not been injured.

  141. PTRS 08 June 12th, 2008 at 9:59 pm

    Nate and Stark

I think a lot of what you are both saying is lost in many fans minds regarding Hughes.

I apologize for patronizing most who already know BUT…IT’s True!!

The fact that the kid (Phil 9th Rib) IS and will be AGAIN well short of his expected innings alloted only assures that next year he will be in the best of circumstances a disappointment and a part time 09 participant.

LOL maybe they’ll pull a Joba with him next year?

Hey, I have an idea. They can trade for Sabathia and sign Sheets and Garland in the offseason, and hey, I bet if they paid the Mets $50M and gave the Mets Hughes and Cano, they could get Santana.

How about that, man? Santana, Sabathia, Garland, Sheets, Wang, and Joba could go back to the bullpen. Man, that’d be totally sweet. I mean, they’d need a payroll of $300-400M, but heck, it’s not our money, right?

Every time Matsui gets out, it is cause he rolls his wrist. When he doesn’t, he gets a hit. So bascially two times out of three he rolls his wrists

  181. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 12 ) June 12th, 2008 at 10:22 pm

    Brandon,

Can you put Santana’s ERA on your name too? Maybe his K numbers. You know numbers that actually matter.

    Does it bother you ?

  182. Brian from PA June 12th, 2008 at 10:22 pm

it’s really pretty disturbing how often the yankees fail to produce a run when they start the inning by getting the leadoff man on. pretty soon teams will start spotting the yankees a baserunner or two to start each inning just to make it more of a challenge.

  183. Yanks27 June 12th, 2008 at 10:22 pm

Everyone in here is a batting coach now because Blanton threw a good sinker.

  184. Al from BK June 12th, 2008 at 10:23 pm

“I can’t ever remember being so unexcited to turn a Yankee game on as I am tonight.

I think I’ve caught the apathy that the team has. lol”

I agree Bob I feel a bit more lethargic due to the poor Yankee play this year.

  185. Gerald T June 12th, 2008 at 10:24 pm

It’s just pointless Brandon. Who cares how many home runs he gives up if he pitches great??

  186. Stormrider6 June 12th, 2008 at 10:24 pm

I know I’m about a half an hour late, but congrats Jeff!

  188. Lawyer Dan June 12th, 2008 at 10:26 pm

Remember when we could have got that Santana guy for Hughes and Kennedy and Cabrera???

  189. CaptainsCorner June 12th, 2008 at 10:26 pm

I feel like Damon has been stranded on base 1 million times this year. Either by a Jeter DP or just easy outs after he reaches base. Especially in the 1st inning of games when he gets on he very rarely scores. Jeter has to do a better jobs getting him in or over.

  190. S.A.- No pain..no gain June 12th, 2008 at 10:26 pm

It’s just pointless Brandon. Who cares how many home runs he gives up if he pitches great??

So he’s pitched great now ? He’s had 2 good outings Dodgers who have no offense and today vs Arizona. All the talk is about him being the King of the NL meanwhile he’s not even the best SP in his own division.

  192. Nick in SF but now in Charlotte June 12th, 2008 at 10:27 pm

hey, if anyone happens to be in Charlotte, North Carolina, I’m going to Picasso’s on East to watch as much of the game as I can stay up for. Come on over, I’ll be the cleancut white guy with short brown hair, glasses, and a Yankee cap next to my beer. Go Yankees!

  193. Fran June 12th, 2008 at 10:27 pm

Nice start by Andy. Keep it up Andy.

Melancon has hurled nearly 25 innings down at Trenton I am starting to wonder why he hasnt seen AAA yet. I am aware of his surgery but he is obviously poised to face AAA pitchers his numbers at Trenton are a joke.

    What will Robbie do here…

  198. Brian from PA June 12th, 2008 at 10:29 pm

i too am starting to lose that feeling of excitement when it’s almost time for the game. i mean, it’s to be expected considering every single night this year we go into the game thinking “alright guys, let’s get over .500 now” or “alright guys, let’s get back to .500 now”. It gets old. they really need to quit walking in place here and rattle off a nice winning streak for crying out loud. maintaining your position in the standings is okay if you’re like, 15 games over, not when you’re at .500. at least there have been a couple of exciting games recently as far as offense goes, with two walk offs in a matter of days, but lo and behold that didn’t get any kind of momentum going. time for a winning streak guys, let’s go.

  199. CaptainsCorner June 12th, 2008 at 10:30 pm

Cano should get smacked every time he swings wildly at the dirt. He would be purple by the time the game ends…

  200. mel June 12th, 2008 at 10:31 pm

  204. CaptainsCorner June 12th, 2008 at 10:33 pm

I REALLY do not like Melky and Cano batting right after each other..It is like watching 2 pitchers batting. Are the Yanks ever going to do something about Cano? Or just continue to let him be totally useless..It is impossible to watch him.

  208. Al from BK June 12th, 2008 at 10:35 pm

The Yankees really think that Cano’s problems will work themselves out but honestly its beyond that there is something very wrong with him.

  209. V June 12th, 2008 at 10:35 pm

  210. MrMulligan (Cairo We Need U) June 12th, 2008 at 10:35 pm

Are the Yanks ever going to do something about Cano? Or just continue to let him be totally useless..It is impossible to watch him.

I’ve been asking that for weeks.

They can’t bench him. Who’s gonna play second?

If Duncan is never gonna get an AB, call Gonzalez back up, play him, and tell Cano to sit in the dugout until he pulls his head out of his butt.

He’s showing no signs of getting going.

  218. seth June 12th, 2008 at 10:37 pm

  220. Brian from PA June 12th, 2008 at 10:37 pm

i wonder when Girardi is gonna sit Cano? i mean, even for 1 game or 2. he sits matsui all the time and he’s one of the league’s leading hitters. i understand it has more to do with his position, but still. cano is just a liability at the plate.

  221. MrMulligan (Cairo We Need U) June 12th, 2008 at 10:38 pm

  229. Ron June 12th, 2008 at 10:40 pm

Yes, too bad we don’t have a light-hitting, impatient, middle-range defensively utility guy.

Andy has got to pull himself together. Wang did it two days ago, even without very good command. Andy can do this.

  230. MrMulligan (Cairo We Need U) June 12th, 2008 at 10:41 pm

  232. Ron June 12th, 2008 at 10:42 pm

Giambi’s range at 1B is more than made up for by his .950 OPS. Maybe he’d be less needed if Cano and Melky’s offense could start to approach their defense. But for now, you live with his defensive limitations.

The Damon/Matsui tandem in left/DH has worked out very well so far. Both are healthy and have been quite productive.

Andy, you are better than this.

Hey Igawa I agree this whole season is gravy honestly its about 09. I’m just watching to see if this team can ever stay above .500, and seriously Cano is infuriating if the Yanks can get one good prospect and a hotdog for him they should
pull the trigger. It just sucks we probably could have gotten Santana for him and another low prospect they were hot for Cano.

  236. Igawa's buck teeth (Where did you go Robby Cano?) June 12th, 2008 at 10:43 pm

this team is very boring right now!

  237. Ron June 12th, 2008 at 10:43 pm

Jeter’s range is much better than it was at the beginning of last year. I’m not sure if it’s better positioning, that he’s healthier, or what. But I’ve seen far fewer PADJ moments this year.

  238. Bob June 12th, 2008 at 10:43 pm

  244. Bob June 12th, 2008 at 10:45 pm

If giambi hits the way he hits now, you live with his defense at first.

He will give you far more runs than he will cost you over the course of a season.

1B defense is way down on the list of problems with this team right now.

    vs KC

  260. Whiff (Cano's bat) June 12th, 2008 at 10:49 pm

Well, I may have been premature in my prediction. Looks like the Yankees are off to another start to make another average pitcher look like Cy Young, like they did last night with Durscherer.

Joe Freakin Blanton. There is a dominant pitcher.

    uggghh.

When oh when will this offense that everyone says will come around, finally realize the baseball season has started. After the All Star break, in August, or when it is finally too late in September?

  261. Ron June 12th, 2008 at 10:50 pm

I’m unconvinced Cano needs anything more than more at-bats. He doesn’t look as lost as I’ve seem him in the past. He’s too good to go the whole season like this.

  262. ripcord June 12th, 2008 at 10:50 pm

The bats are going to have to wake up at some point this season. That means Cano.

That contract they gave him is looking utterly foolish right now. He’s the worst hitter in the league right now.

  263. Al from BK June 12th, 2008 at 10:50 pm

Pathetic I think its time for a team meeting with alot of yelling, chair throwing, gatorade tossing and crying involved I honestly think this team needs that. Then at the end Hank can come in and throw some body a beating(preferably Cano) just to make an example, then he should stomp out his cigarette and shout “Next stop October.”

  264. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 12 ) June 12th, 2008 at 10:52 pm

Maybe Andy is tipping his pitches ? That’s a HR in YS, Andy needs to find himself.

  265. CaptainsCorner June 12th, 2008 at 10:52 pm

Yanks NEED to bring up Gonzalez to play the infield for a couple of games. Duncan is just taking up space on this team..He cant hit major league pitching and hasn’t started a game in almost 3 weeks. Give Cano 3 games off, then I am sure Jeter can use 1 game off..Arod also. They can not continue without a real utility infielder..Betemit can’t really play short or 2nd base. It is a terrible excuse to not be able to sit Cano because no one can play his position. He NEEDS to be sat down..Swinging wildly for 3 months is obviously not getting the job done.

  266. Al from BK June 12th, 2008 at 10:53 pm

I’m just excited to see Joba tomorrow thats what is getting me through this.

  267. Wolf In Pinstripes June 12th, 2008 at 10:53 pm

No worries Brandon – with all the negativity around here these days I’m sure it’s getting hard for people to sort out the legit comments from the crap. ;)

  268. Ron June 12th, 2008 at 10:53 pm

Difference between Cano and say, Angel Berroa, is that Cano has shown the ability to actually hit.

It amazes me that people think that this is what Cano is. He’s been one of the best-hitting middle infielders in baseball for 2 1/2 years, and he has a lousy 1st half and people want him traded. Have some perspective people!

I think it’s more legtimate to be concerned with Melky. I’d hoped that his big start was the beginning of a breakout, but he’s been no better than his mediocre self since then. I’m still unconvinced he has the bat to be an everyday player. Gardner is intriguing me right now.

  269. Stormrider6 June 12th, 2008 at 10:53 pm

I firmly believe that if Cano learns some patience, he’ll see better pitches, which he has shown he can hit well. The only question is when.

  270. tonyb June 12th, 2008 at 10:54 pm

  273. Jessica June 12th, 2008 at 10:55 pm

I think a big contribution to Cano’s struggles is the fact that he is making 10% more contact on pitches that are out of the zone, that he swings at. He is swinging at the same percentage of pitches out of the zone as he has all most of his career, its just that this year he is putting them into play. And with balls out of the zone, you normally are not making good contact, thus the weak ground outs and constant pop ups. So instead of a strike, he is making an out.

  274. Al from BK June 12th, 2008 at 10:56 pm

Seriously I know that Alberto Gonzalez cant hit but how much of a difference is there as of right now between him and Cano, not much. What ever happened to that militant manager we were promised if the front office wanted Joe Torre part deux they could have signed Donnie baseball or just brought back the real deal himself. Bench Cano dont worry about his feelings he will get the message.

SA: Tried all those. Found a place I loved on sublet.com and sent an email to schedule a viewing and got no response.

  286. Ron June 12th, 2008 at 11:02 pm

    Cano’s BB totals:

    2005 (522 AB): 16
    2006 (482 AB): 18
    2007 (617 AB): 39
    2008 (246 AB): 12

He’s on pace for more walks than his first two seasons. He’ll probably end up around 40 again. Oh, and the year he had 18 walks, he hit .324 (thanks to a crazy high BABIP, but still).

His Line Drive, Groundball, and Flyball percentages are all in line with his ML averages.

    It’s a matter of time.

While Cano’s offensive value is held down by his inability to take ball four, he is by no means unable to be one of the better-hitting middle-infielders in baseball due to his lack of discipline at the plate.

  287. Whiff (Cano's bat) June 12th, 2008 at 11:03 pm

42 pitches for Blanton through 2 innings. He won’t be lasting long at this pace.

You underestimate the panic first swinging Yankee offense. Just when Blanton should be removed, they will give him 3 consecutive 9 pitch innings.

  288. Al from BK June 12th, 2008 at 11:03 pm

Like anyone expected Cano to swing at a strike let alone get a hit. Girardi wake up and bench the moron. I can’t him anymore. It is soo hard for him to get out of his 3 month slump because he has no idea what to swing at. I think he needs an ear piece with someone telling when to swing or actually take a pitch. At the beginning it is a slump now it is killing the team and pretty pathetic.

  329. Whiff (Cano's bat) June 12th, 2008 at 11:16 pm

Ok, by no means is the umpiring the reason that the Yankees offense sucks or they cannot seem to get past .500, but this umpire is clearly adjusting his zone from inning to inning.

that means that this putrid lineup needs to become aggressive, and that doesn’t mean watch good pitches and swing at bad ones.

  330. TKinDC June 12th, 2008 at 11:16 pm

As Robi Cano I love him but Joe G. needs to do something about this kid, he had the same issue w/ Hanley Ramirez in 2006 Hanley the first half of the season was Robi Cano- like .268/.334/.410 then in the 2nd half .319/.373/.558 IDK what is going on w/ Robi but he needs to wake up.

As does the rest of this Yankee team no offense Joe Freakin’ Blanton is a near scrub what the hell !

  346. CaptainsCorner June 12th, 2008 at 11:21 pm

This team can absolutely not hit pitchers who are strike throwers and pound the zone with fastballs. They are taking way too many 1st pitch fastballs and then swinging at garbage. Look at Damons at bat 2 fastballs down the middle and then he swings at a curve.

  347. Aaron June 12th, 2008 at 11:21 pm

    Girardi has been really unimpressive.

  367. Ron June 12th, 2008 at 11:26 pm

It’s a good thing Girardi isn’t dumb enough to play a defensive replacement in the 6th inning.

Even if we had Minky in his prime, he’d have no where to play. You play a real 1st baseman, you bench Matsui or Damon, or weaken the outfield by putting Matsui in left and Damon in center.

By compromising the Defense at 1st, you turn a weakness in the outfield into a strength. Damon is a fine left fielder and Melky’s very good in center.

I guess that is because it isn’t actually what happened. But I guess it feels good to type it out in case no one is paying any attention.

  383. Ron June 12th, 2008 at 11:32 pm

I would caution the Yankees to make the comparison between Texeira at this age and Jason Giambi. They lived to regret handing a megadeal to a 1st baseman without Giambi’s offensive track record. His 1st base defense is going to fade with age.

  384. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 12 ) June 12th, 2008 at 11:32 pm

my god these were some of the worst pitch selections I’ve seen in some time. 1-2 go fastball high and tight they have to know Cust has power when he extends his arms not so much when you go inside. Wasted 2 pitches causing himmore fatigue to do what he should have done in 1-2 and probably missed the spot because of wasting his energy on putting that pressure on his 2 sliders.

    Fran –

The team is going to have to cope with Giambi at first as long as we have Damon and Matsui and Giambi competing for DH time.

The good news is that Matsui and Damon are top 5 in average and Giambi is top 5 in HR’s and OPS.

  396. Ron June 12th, 2008 at 11:36 pm

There’s not really any reason to believe that Texeira hasn’t used an illegal substance. And unless Giambi was injecting steroids into his eyes, his plate patience that gives him so much value is purely natural.

Giambi’s probably not as good a hitter in Oakland without drugs, I’ll give you that. But the parallels between the two are striking, and Tex will command a massive deal since Boras is his agent and he’s a switch hitter. That’s one gamble I don’t want the Yankees to take unless they have to.

  411. Stormrider6 June 12th, 2008 at 11:40 pm

Snakes on a plane situation – bases loaded, no one out.

  412. DFox June 12th, 2008 at 11:40 pm

The Yankees can find a way not to score a run here.

  413. Whiff (Cano's bat) June 12th, 2008 at 11:40 pm

Shocking. With each day the Yankees stay at .500, the entitled, spoiled, impatient Yankees fans think “Tis Girardi guy is no good!”

It not that he is no good it is that his managerial abilities suck right now. He is more like a AA manager trying to get his feet wet instead of someone who won Manager of the Year.

to date: No discipline of Cabrera for slide, Cano for hitting, keeps playing Giambi, overuses his bullpen, Ohlendorf, shows no fire for his players, doesn’t hit and run, doesn’t steal, basically, he is like most of the Yankees starters, collecting a paycheck and walking around like his has credibility.

  414. CaptainsCorner June 12th, 2008 at 11:40 pm

Good at bat..Now Matsui has to be the hitter who goes with where the pitch is thrown and not the one who pulls everything to 2nd base for an easy DP.

  415. Ron June 12th, 2008 at 11:41 pm

If the Yankees can’t score more than one here, I’m not sure it’s worth watching this game. Seriously. They have to make it happen here. Bases loaded, nobody out, two good lefty hitters against a righty. You can’t ask for a better situation.

  416. Neil June 12th, 2008 at 11:41 pm

    Let’s go Matsui

  417. yankeenate June 12th, 2008 at 11:41 pm

I’m a yankees fan and i despise the red sox. but consider the injuries they have incurred this season with Lowell, Ortiz, Dice K, Schilling, and Ellsbury missing considerable time. all they’ve done since is lead the division with the 3rd best record in baseball. they find ways to win. I don’t think we can continue using injuries or slow starts as an excuse.

i also don’t get the ‘we’re building for 09 and on talk’. don’t get me wrong, i understand building the farm system and player development but no one in our farm system is attributing to the over 200 million $$ payroll. we have the highest payroll. so either the highest payroll is intended for the best players or we are foolish for throwing money out to second rate players. i want to believe it is for the best players…i’m just waiting for them to show up.

  418. Fran June 12th, 2008 at 11:41 pm

  460. CaptainsCorner June 12th, 2008 at 11:47 pm

It would be nice if the Yanks actually had a bullpen for stand by in this inning. It wouldn’t surprise me with Pettitte if it is 1st and 2nd no one out. But Girardi tends to leave the pitcher out there to dry because he is scared to bring in the clowns from the bullpen.

  461. Neil June 12th, 2008 at 11:47 pm

Hopefully Andy wants to hold this lead

  462. Martin June 12th, 2008 at 11:47 pm

  466. Yazman (aka David) June 12th, 2008 at 11:48 pm

Anyone see how hard Hideki ran on that play? It was a near-can’t-miss HR, but Hideki wasn’t going to get caught admiring a double, no matter how small the odds. Way to go!

  467. Ron June 12th, 2008 at 11:48 pm

We don’t see a fifth of the time Girardi is with his players. And if he’s a half decent person, let alone manager, he’ll chew his guys out in the clubhouse, not where the cameras can see him. Embarassing a player isn’t a way to get him motivated, no matter what fans like to believe.

  468. Fran June 12th, 2008 at 11:48 pm

Let’s go Andy. You have a 3 run lead to protect.

  469. Y's Guy June 12th, 2008 at 11:49 pm

  494. CaptainsCorner June 12th, 2008 at 11:56 pm

Cano needs a couple of days off JUST so he can clear his head. Instead of coming to the ballpark knowing in his head that he can’t hit and is hitting .220. I am not expecting anything out of Gonzo but it isn’t like Cano is helping the team either at point. Players say that getting a day or 2 off really does help because they don’t have to think about everything. If everyone else gets days off why can’t he.

  495. TKinDC June 12th, 2008 at 11:57 pm

  499. Stormrider6 June 12th, 2008 at 11:59 pm

Odd that for all the moving on the bases that the Yanks have been doing this series (SB attempts, hit and runs…) the big blast finally comes. A watched pot never boils, I reckon.

  500. Matt June 13th, 2008 at 12:00 am

I don’t think Ellis hit second base with the ball in his glove. Umpires give them the “vicinity” call but it’s ridiculous. If a guy misses the bag cheating to turn 2 he’s safe. You’re at 2nd base ump, watch the play at 2nd base and call it.

  507. thunderfangabe June 13th, 2008 at 12:05 am

Jason Jones pitched a complete game for Trenton, but got the loss…3-0.

  508. Ron June 13th, 2008 at 12:05 am

So good to see Pettitte back to his old tricks. Gets the lead and starts dominating.

  509. bill brasky June 13th, 2008 at 12:05 am

here’s the problem i have with Cano, he never tries to make adjustments. I know he’s immensely talented but he’s got to stop swinging at first pitches. it goes against the entire strategy of the Yankees that have made them dominant for over ten years. If he’s not hitting, try to take more pitches and be like Giambi when he was slumping, who at least drove the pitch count count up and didn’t hurt the team as much bc he occasionally got a walk/ enabled someone else to get a good pitch to hit.

  510. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 12 ) June 13th, 2008 at 12:06 am

  513. Y's Guy June 13th, 2008 at 12:07 am

bill, cano has been going deeper into counts for over a week now and it has made no difference.

  514. Dee June 13th, 2008 at 12:08 am

D&D, no way they should remotely consider trading Cano but I think it’s fair to say let’s sit him for a few games. He always looks lost at bat and looks miserable after. He kills rallies and changes offensive momentums for the team. Sitting him a few games and let him clear his head can’t hurt.

  522. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 12 ) June 13th, 2008 at 12:10 am

Andy bouncing back. The one thing I see w/ Andy is he struggles vs RHB, that’s something he needs to adjust to. I think most likely that’s where his cutter gets him in trouble.

  523. bill brasky June 13th, 2008 at 12:10 am

even if he isn’t hitting for a week with this change he still AT LEAST drives up the pitch count and gives the rest of the team better pitches to hit bc of fatigue, starters not going long into the game, etc…

  524. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 12 ) June 13th, 2008 at 12:11 am

Alex swinging at horrible offspeed located pitch again.

  525. CaptainsCorner June 13th, 2008 at 12:12 am

Has anyone noticed how nice it is to listen to the game when Kay is not there? I can actually listen to the game and not want to mute it every second so I don’t have to hear his whining and BS.

  526. Dee June 13th, 2008 at 12:13 am

If this holds we won’t need Mo which is great. One game rest is not enough after making him pitch 4 days in a row.

I’d say Andy for the 8th then Veras.

  527. Al from BK June 13th, 2008 at 12:14 am

I prefer Singleton’s “This one is gone!” to Kay’s “See Ya!”
dont have much against Kay but I prefer Kenny.

  528. Ron June 13th, 2008 at 12:14 am

I don’t know about that, Brandon, that was a very nice curveball.

Brown’s an interesting guy. Another hot shot pitching prospect who didn’t work out. Started with the Indians, I think, then to the Dodgers, the Padres, and now the A’s. Odd delivery for a righthander.

  529. JoeT 28 in 09!! June 13th, 2008 at 12:15 am

our best 8th inning man is…… no 8th inning man

  530. Ron June 13th, 2008 at 12:16 am

I think Pettitte overuses that cutter. He really ought to use his curveball more against righties. He doesn’t have the velocity he once had, so when he fails to bury the cutter in, like with Guillen, it gets whacked.

  531. S.A.- No pain..no gain June 13th, 2008 at 12:16 am

    Alright, Andy back for more

  532. CaptainsCorner June 13th, 2008 at 12:17 am

Pettitte looked better in the 6th and 7th because he started throwing his curve ball more. His cutter has been the pitch that has really got him in trouble in his recent starts because it was staying over the middle of the plate. After the Yanks got the lead he looked much better. He wasn’t bad in the 5th but the Yanks have a statue playing 1st base.

  533. Fran June 13th, 2008 at 12:18 am

CaptainsCorner – good point about Kay, but he’ll be back tomorrow. Replacing Murcer in the booth.

  534. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 June 13th, 2008 at 12:18 am

  535. EY June 13th, 2008 at 12:19 am

Looks like it might be Farnsy

  536. Al from BK June 13th, 2008 at 12:19 am

    Krazy Kyle warming *cringe*

  537. Ron June 13th, 2008 at 12:19 am

    Ach! Kyle!

Set them down Andy. No need for any excitement tonight.

  538. CaptainsCorner June 13th, 2008 at 12:19 am

Whenever I see Farns warming up or even with a ball in his hand it makes me nervous.

  539. Y's Guy June 13th, 2008 at 12:19 am

  540. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 12 ) June 13th, 2008 at 12:19 am

I don’t know about that, Brandon, that was a very nice curveball.

It’s not like the top dropped out of that pitch, Alex swung blind there. See I criticize everyone.

  541. Stormrider6 June 13th, 2008 at 12:20 am

Farnsey is warming up and I’m all out of beer. Please, Andy, do the work. My liver is counting on you.

  542. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 12 ) June 13th, 2008 at 12:20 am

Send that thing back to his seats..do we need to review the Farnsy Rules !

  543. Ron June 13th, 2008 at 12:20 am

David Wells made a career of throwing a good curve down and in to righthanders and away from lefties and never issuing walks. Andy has a good enough curveball that he can use it in lieu of his cutter. He’s done more of that this start.

  544. G. Love June 13th, 2008 at 12:21 am

Andy is dealing folks. I knew he was going to show up tonight big.

  545. Fran June 13th, 2008 at 12:21 am

Andy with a really strong outing. Looking like the old Andy.

  546. Stormrider6 June 13th, 2008 at 12:21 am

I meant to add that since I’m out of beer, I’d need to break out the liquor. Please Andy, do it for my liver.

  550. Al from BK June 13th, 2008 at 12:21 am

  552. JoeT 28 in 09!! June 13th, 2008 at 12:22 am

guys Farnsy is fine to use today – we’re up by more then 1 – up by 1 or a tie game = no Farnsy. Up by 2+ = fine for Farnsy

that being said – let Andy finish it out!!

  557. G. Love June 13th, 2008 at 12:23 am

Let Andy throw the complete game. It will turn his season around.

    What’s his pitch count?

  558. ellen June 13th, 2008 at 12:23 am

Y’s Guy: I know! I heard the score of the Mets game in the car this afternoon and they were up 4-0 in the 7th, I believe. I had to go to the office for a bit and when I got back on the road I heard they’d lost. Rough stuff.

  559. S.A.- No pain..no gain June 13th, 2008 at 12:23 am

Let’s get like 2 more runs now. Always nice to get some more insurance runs

  560. Ron June 13th, 2008 at 12:23 am

I think that refusing to use Kyle two days in a row was plain stupid on Torre’s part. It’s one thing when he’s struggling or when his back locked up, but he gets into hot streaks, and you can ride him. Girardi’s done that. We’ve actually gotten something out of Krazy Kyle this year.

  561. YanksAngel June 13th, 2008 at 12:23 am

    didn’t Farnsworth pitch last night

What have we learned from pitching him in back to back games

    Please no Girardi!!

“The Celtics locked up Phil Jackson’s triangle offense like Peta’s protest did to Micheal Vick”

peta’s protest didn’t do anything to Vick, the FEDS put him in the pokey.(LEAVENWORTH specifically) The only good thing about peta is that occasionally they get a bunch of hot girls to walk around nude to protest “fur”

God bless idealistic hot young politicos.

  563. Ron June 13th, 2008 at 12:24 am

    Andy’s at 113. I think he’s done.

  564. Interested Reader June 13th, 2008 at 12:24 am

yeah i prefer kenny over kay as well. kenny has a bit softer style doesnt override the game. with kay its like hes trying to be the whole show sometimes he needs to just stfu. best yankee recent yankee duo was kaat and kenny together imo.

  565. Al from BK June 13th, 2008 at 12:24 am

I know Wang had the complete game against the Sox this year, but there were a lot of hard hit balls that night that luckily fell into Yankee gloves.

I think this is the best start by a Yankee starter this year. Pettitte was merciless tonight.

  571. Yazman (aka David) June 13th, 2008 at 12:25 am

  587. miggs June 13th, 2008 at 12:28 am

Why is Pettitte coming out to pitch the 9th at 113 pitches? Is Girardi intentionally trying to blow his arm out?

Again, I just don’t get this move.

Mo is warm. Crap, even use Veras. but don’t blow out Pettitte’s arm. There’s no reason for this.

Im with you my brother. Whats disturbing was they were thrashing the team before they fell behind today. Maybe they needed to be breast fed as kids. Good to see your head still straight.

For the Doom and Gloom fans. 4 and a half games back from the wild card. Our top 2 pitchers are finally dealing. A run is inevitable.

    Good night for real now.

  643. Stormrider6 June 13th, 2008 at 12:38 am

I love Mo. Have a good night, folks!

  644. Fran June 13th, 2008 at 12:38 am

Nice job by Mo. Great pitching tonight. The Yanks take 2 of 3 and are back over .500!

  645. EY June 13th, 2008 at 12:39 am

    THEEEEEEEEEEEE YANKEEESSSSSS WIN!

Great win! Great pitching, and great birthday hitting from Godzilla. Let’s see if they can win the next few games and actually go up games above .500

  646. S.A.- No pain..no gain June 13th, 2008 at 12:39 am

We need to keep on winning series

    Great win.

  649. YanksAngel June 13th, 2008 at 12:39 am

    Great job Mo!!!

Now can we pleeeeeease stay over .500 from here on out 8)

  650. Yazman (aka David) June 13th, 2008 at 12:39 am

Has there ever been an athlete in which you have more confidence than #42?

  651. Drew June 13th, 2008 at 12:40 am

Let’s make it above .500 to stay this time.

  652. JoeT 28 in 09!! June 13th, 2008 at 12:40 am

“really need to win again tomorrow and put that .500 crap behind us for good!”

where have I heard that before??

Can we finally do it though?

  653. Al from BK June 13th, 2008 at 12:40 am

Alright fellas now were looking at Joba tomorrow in Houston, hopefully he goes strong and gets his first win.

  654. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 12 ) June 13th, 2008 at 12:40 am

  655. Matty June 13th, 2008 at 12:40 am

    “Doubters…

    You should all be ashamed.”

Can they win two in a row before we start the Canyon of Hero’s Parade?

This team has a lot of faults and they won’t be fixed in a day.

  656. Chuckie Love June 13th, 2008 at 12:42 am

With this bullpen who doesn’t want Mo in there to throw 15 pitches?

  657. Al from BK June 13th, 2008 at 12:42 am

I am excited like a kid on Christmas eve about Joba’s start tomorrow, also he gets to blow fastballs by Chacon.

  658. TKinDC June 13th, 2008 at 12:44 am

“After 5 days of rest you can’t think that caused him to suck.”

Oh, but I can! and do!

You think it was a coincidence that Rasner got abused in that start? Why couldn’t he locate an inside fastball?

pitchers these days can’t handle that kind of work load. I don’t like it, I really don’t understand it, but the results seem to be pretty clear.

  659. Brian from PA June 13th, 2008 at 12:44 am

that was refreshing. great job by Andy, and the offense did enough to make it standup. good stuff.

    go Joba!

  660. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 12 ) June 13th, 2008 at 12:46 am

You think it was a coincidence that Rasner got abused in that start? Why couldn’t he locate an inside fastball?

Are you kidding me, that’s just an excuse, infact the A’s said what they did was go w/ his away pitches, Rasner wasn’t throwing inside at all.

  661. Eugie June 13th, 2008 at 12:47 am

“For the Doom and Gloom fans. 4 and a half games back from the wild card. Our top 2 pitchers are finally dealing. A run is inevitable. ”

Doom and Gloom, no. Realist, yes. I hope I’m wrong but I really do not think this team will make the Postseason. None of their problems are being addressed. The Bullpen is still an issue. The Starting pitching will become a new issue with Ian “I’m going to make them look stupid” Kennedy and Phil Hughes being put back into the rotation when won’t even deserve it.

  662. TKinDC June 13th, 2008 at 12:48 am

    Trade bait for Farnsy?
    DFA bait for Shelley?

  663. Eugie June 13th, 2008 at 12:50 am

    “Farnsy on the milkbox
    Shelley on the milkbox

    Trade bait for Farnsy?”

Torre tried that but the rest of the league is smart.

  664. Yazman (aka David) June 13th, 2008 at 12:51 am

“yazman, why does it matter how many pitches cano and melky took”

Y’s, you’re totally correct, didn’t matter at all for this game. I was just pointing out an overall trend of concern for two players I hope to see improve.

  665. Al from BK June 13th, 2008 at 12:51 am

Eugie- Hughes is months away and IPK wont start right away unless Rasner stinks up the place again next start.

  666. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 12 ) June 13th, 2008 at 12:52 am

TK SP have been throwing 118 pitches and over for years now, you can not tell me one start in which Rasner went 8 IP and threw about 118 pitches effected his next start. That makes no sense. Why did it never happen in the past, why is it happening now. The pitch count is the worst thing to ever happen in baseball. It’s a cop out to give relievers jobs. It amazes before it was a handfull of SP that would get hurt, yet as soon as pitch count got into this game SP has dropped and actually have been submitted to more injuries.

  667. TKinDC June 13th, 2008 at 12:52 am

“Are you kidding me, that’s just an excuse, infact the A’s said what they did was go w/ his away pitches, Rasner wasn’t throwing inside at all.”

Brandon – pay some sort of attention to the game – why didn’t he throw inside?

    any reason?

he didn’t think he could! – you need to have confidence to throw inside. Razzy was gassed and didn’t have the confidence to throw inside. He got killed.

That was his worst start – if you think that it is a coincidence that it came on the heels of a 118 pitch effort, then go ahead. I prefer to deal with the actual facts.

Pitchers today do not get conditioned to pitch so many pitches. You can disagree with that approach, but you shouldn’t ignore its effect on the game.

  668. Al from BK June 13th, 2008 at 12:53 am

I need to see more from Cano and Melk, a benching is in order for Robby because he is the kind of player that needs to be forced in order to play up to his full capabilities.

  669. JoeT 28 in 09!! June 13th, 2008 at 12:54 am

I’m with you TK…. pitchers that throw 20+ pitches more then they’re used to often come out their next start and don’t have their best stuff.

  670. Eugie June 13th, 2008 at 12:54 am

“Eugie- Hughes is months away and IPK wont start right away unless Rasner stinks up the place again next start.”

When the Yankees win, the trolls respectfully go away.

Generations of hapless trolls have respected this tradition. Please comply.

  673. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 12 ) June 13th, 2008 at 12:58 am

Brandon – pay some sort of attention to the game – why didn’t he throw inside?

    any reason?

No no particular reason maybe he just didn’t have it !

he didn’t think he could! – you need to have confidence to throw inside. Razzy was gassed and didn’t have the confidence to throw inside. He got killed.

Yet the scouting report was swing outside because he didn’t. Didn’t you notice 1st couple of innings Ras threw inside then stopped doing it and went w/ freaking off speed pitches.

That was his worst start – if you think that it is a coincidence that it came on the heels of a 118 pitch effort, then go ahead. I prefer to deal with the actual facts.

let me take a stab at this one maybe because his family his family was at the stadium. Ever thought that ?

Pitchers today do not get conditioned to pitch so many pitches. You can disagree with that approach, but you shouldn’t ignore its effect on the game

It’s the wrong approach to take in this game, because all your doing is decreasing his game to game endurance. Eversince pitch count more pitchers have gotten hurt, ever wonder why !

  674. Al from BK June 13th, 2008 at 1:00 am

Are you referring to the Yankees universe pipe dream plan that Cash and a bunch of scouts thought up and had all of us buy into. The plan where Joba, Franchise and IPK are all in the rotation. I think that plan has been surrendered partially IPK hasnt really shown that he deserves the job over Moose and Razzy, and Hughes well he is out until at least late August according to Pete so honestly Im not sure what the plan has become. This is what should happen if all 5 starters are pitching well then IPK and Hughesy should put their asses out on a mound in Trenton or SWB and pitch their shiny arms off until they prove they can dominate like they did when a roster spot wasnt guaranteed for them.

  675. YanksAngel June 13th, 2008 at 1:03 am

sole possession of 3rd now. It’s a step

  676. Al from BK June 13th, 2008 at 1:03 am

TkinDC what have I said that is troll like. Cano only plays hard when he is pushed or encouraged to do so. Google Larry Bowa it was that man that kept Cano on his heels at second and patient at the plate. He is reaching for every pitch that is not his style he should relax and in order to do so he needs a few days off to put things in perspective, because he is obviously pressing.

  677. Dee June 13th, 2008 at 1:03 am

“I hope I’m wrong but I really do not think this team will make the Postseason. None of their problems are being addressed. The Bullpen is still an issue. The Starting pitching will become a new issue with Ian “I’m going to make them look stupid” Kennedy and Phil Hughes being put back into the rotation when won’t even deserve it.”

Why would they stick Ian and Phil back in there if the current rotation is working? It makes no sense. It will be July by the time Ian is ready. If Wang and Andy are back on track which we have seen good signs of this week, Joba will definitely be at 100 pitches by then, Moose continues to pitch well and Rasner too hopefully there is no reason Girardi will mess with that rotation.

I am still optimistic we’ll make the PO. The wild card race this year is weak.

  678. TKinDC June 13th, 2008 at 1:05 am

“No no particular reason maybe he just didn’t have it !”

I believe you are making my point – thank you!

“then stopped doing it and went w/ freaking off speed pitches.”

    because he was gassed.

“because his family his family was at the stadium. Ever thought that ?”

so he can handle 55000 at the stadium, but his family – no?

“It’s the wrong approach to take in this game,”

I agree!!! I also think every person should live free and be happy. Sadly, that doesn’t make it reality.

  679. Steve O June 13th, 2008 at 1:05 am

All right. This is the time we make our move. With Wang and Pettitte both turning the corner and Joba getting up to speed, we can make a run. Our hitting should get going against our old friend Chacon.

  680. Al from BK June 13th, 2008 at 1:06 am

I have noticed you like to start argument and label people trolls in my opinion agressively mocking and calling people out for their opinion is troll like behavior.

  681. Nick in SF but now in Charlotte June 13th, 2008 at 1:06 am

Hey folks, great win which I enjoyed at a sports bar in Charlotte, NC. After all the bitter recriminations last night you would have thought the Yanks had just been eliminated from contention, but voila, one night later and they ended up taking 2 of 3 against an over-.500 team on the road. Not bad.

I have to say, I called the Matsui grand slam. I’m sure I wasn’t the only one, but I happen to know that this game was attended as a group outing by the San Francisco Japanese Appreciation Society, so a huge Matsui Moment was a given.

    Onwards to Joba!

  682. Al from BK June 13th, 2008 at 1:10 am

I think Cano needs to be benched because it is not even the fact that he is struggling he is lost at the plate and forcing every at bat. Regarding Hughes and IPK I believe they need to earn a spot on the big club and if all 5 starters are pitching well why should a guy who has been working hard to stay in the bigs(Rasner) have to go back to SWB to make room for one of these over-hyped youngsters (more specifically IPK) it doesnt seem very fair to me but if that opinion makes me a troll so be it.

  683. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 12 ) June 13th, 2008 at 1:11 am

I believe you are making my point – thank you!

What point did I make for you ? My point is there is no special reason why he pitched poorly.

    because he was gassed.

What makes you say that, again when did Darell say he was gased, after he got away from his game plan yes, he just didn’t throw inside, that’s on him not his stamina. Again he’s not going to go 21-0

so he can handle 55000 at the stadium, but his family – no?

Pre game he seemed pretty aware about his family being at the park to watch him.

  684. Dee June 13th, 2008 at 1:11 am

Didn’t the A’s recently steamrolled the Sox when they were in town? If so then an even bigger moral victory:-)

Go Joba tomorrow…soooo excited to see his at bat!!!

  685. Al from BK June 13th, 2008 at 1:14 am

Dee- Its even better since I believe Brandon told me that the guys hit .500 in college I’m surprised. I wonder if Harlan Chamberlain will be present I dunno it cant be that much farther than Minny is from Lincoln, and he was going to go to Minny.

  686. Eugie June 13th, 2008 at 1:15 am

People don’t seem to realize that both Phil and Ian are also on innings counts and they are apart of this “Plan” Girardi and Cashman keep bringing up. If they broke the pen for Joba, they’ll break the SP for those two.

  687. Timmy Lupus June 13th, 2008 at 1:16 am

You gotta love Andy. From the postgame “All that was going through my mind was, you better not give this lead up you idiot”.

  688. Al from BK June 13th, 2008 at 1:16 am

Strike that its twice as far.

  689. Al from BK June 13th, 2008 at 1:19 am

Eugie- Its called AAA I would not remove a starter who was performing like Moose or Rasner just to slip generation trey in. Especially Moose where would he go if you put Hughes and IPK in the rotation? and hes having a fantastic year.

  690. TKinDC June 13th, 2008 at 1:26 am

    Brandon –

If you want to believe that it was a random event that Rasner had his worst outing right after his longest outing, be my guest.

Since I don’t try to hold current pitchers to the norms of pitchers 20 years ago, I will happily maintain that there was a carry-over effect from his 118 pitch start to the next.

Rasner=Hallady=Wells? who are you kidding? Not me.

“he just didn’t throw inside, that’s on him not his stamina. Again he’s not going to go 21-0″

This is a confusing statement – is his stamina and ‘him’ separated? It is widely understood that a pitcher has to have confidence in his stuff to throw inside (see Moose from last year) A pitcher who knows he is weakened won’t pitch inside because it might drift over the plate and become a souvenir.

  691. Dee June 13th, 2008 at 1:28 am

“People don’t seem to realize that both Phil and Ian are also on innings counts and they are apart of this “Plan” Girardi and Cashman keep bringing up. If they broke the pen for Joba, they’ll break the SP for those two.”

I still have to disagree. They broke the pen up for Joba believing that he will give them an even better chance to win games in the rotation. And we have reason to believe so far that he will…Joba was not good at his first start but was already much better by his 2nd and he could very well pick up his first win tomorrow by only his 3rd start. Phil and Ian have lost double-digit games this season, Cashman and Girardi won’t just stick them back in just because of “the plan” if the current 5 guys are pitching well.

This 2008 Yankee team is playing for a pennant, it’s not the Phil Hughes Ian Kennedy training camp.

  692. stuart June 13th, 2008 at 1:29 am

the party pooper is here.. I will take any win they get but the offense still is avg. at best.. 1 clutch hit goes a long way…

    pettitte looked very good tonight…

need to make a roster move before Houston.. Moeller DFA and add gardner or the AG…

  693. stuart June 13th, 2008 at 1:31 am

Dee you are correct. Hughes has a much better chance of getting back into the rotation then Ian. IF Rasner is pitching well neither will be starting ….

  694. Dee June 13th, 2008 at 1:32 am

Al, would be nice to see Harlan, although I worry about his health sitting out there for 4 hours in the Texas heat…

  695. Pierce - 2008 Best Actress Academy Award June 13th, 2008 at 1:34 am

I wouldn’t throw Rasner under the bus for that bad outing. Those things happen. Its just tough when the Yankees need to put together a string of wins to push them above .500 to stay. His ball wasn’t moving well. I have to wonder if Rasner was trying a little too hard because of his family and friends being there to see him in person.

I am more upset over the lack of offense the Yankees have been giving lately. Even tonight, if it wasn’t for Hideki’s birthday gift to himself and the Yankee fans, it was not a great offensive night.

  696. Eugie June 13th, 2008 at 1:34 am

“This 2008 Yankee team is playing for a pennant, it’s not the Phil Hughes Ian Kennedy training camp.”

Sorry but they’ve used the terms “patience” and “Transition year” a little too much so far for me to believe that.

A nice win . . . RISP still an issue except for Godzilla’s game-winner. SJ’s right about seeing if they can get to 5 games over .500 before evaluating their chances of making it to the postseason. Cano, like the team, remains a mystery. Hope someone in pinstripes can solve it soon.

  700. pat June 13th, 2008 at 1:40 am

“Moeller DFA and add gardner or the AG…”

Girardi said on the pregame show that because of the funky day/night mix of games coming up in the next week, they will hold onto 3 catchers for a little more time.

  702. raymagnetic June 13th, 2008 at 1:43 am

I’ve never seen more ridiculous cry baby fans in my life when God forbid the Yankees are losing after 4 innings.

The Yankees have looked much better recently, anybody who doesn’t think so is delusional.

They haven’t lost any of their last four series. I’m sure that won’t matter to most of the whiners on this blog but things like that matter to me.

  703. Al from BK June 13th, 2008 at 1:44 am

Dee- Wouldnt count on the heat so much its a night game and they usually close the roof when storms are in the area and once the roof is closed climate control is real nice down there I saw a game a few years back. However I understand your concern its a heck of a trek for Mr. Chamberlain he should probably take it easy in Lincoln in the AC I know I would.

  704. raymagnetic June 13th, 2008 at 1:46 am

The Yankees are 4.5 games out of a playoff spot.

They are behind Oakland and Tampa Bay.

Is there anyone here who honestly believes that Tampa or Oakland will end the year with a better record than the Yankees, cause I don’t.

  705. Dee June 13th, 2008 at 1:46 am

Eugie, they have to say that when they lose games, it’s probably in the media training script. What do you expect them to say? “Yes we stink”???

If you believe that even if the team starts their run Girardi will actually disrupt a rotation that is working well and winning games to make room for IPK and Hughes just so they can reach their inning counts this year then you are crazy.

  706. Al from BK June 13th, 2008 at 1:49 am

Raymagnetic- Fantastic points I had no idea that Oakland and Tampa were the only teams ahead of us I really dont expect much out of Oakland and Tampa has hit the skids, however the Yanks really gotta get something going to assert themselves as a contender and not a pretender.

  707. TKinDC June 13th, 2008 at 1:49 am

  709. Al from BK June 13th, 2008 at 1:52 am

Pitchers getting their work in is the reason why the farm exists if Hughes and IPK come back when everyone else is pitching well then they will have to pitch down in Scranton like most other 21-22 year old guys have to pitch. However if Rasner is pitching so-so then I give Franchise a shot but I am not kicking Moose out of the rotation if hes got 13 wins no way.

  710. raymagnetic June 13th, 2008 at 1:53 am

    TK,

I don’t know how they live with themselves either. Maybe we should join Rebecca’s Optimist Prime club.

All I know is that on June 13th there are much worse things than being 4.5 games out of first place.

  711. raymagnetic June 13th, 2008 at 1:54 am

  713. Al from BK June 13th, 2008 at 1:55 am

Well 4.5 isnt bad but I still wish we could get the division somehow Boston winning the division last year was upsetting but given where we were its a blesing the team made the postseason.

“Eugie, they have to say that when they lose games, it’s probably in the media training script. What do you expect them to say? “Yes we stink”???”

They started saying this before the season even started. They wouldn’t have started with 2 rookies in the rotation otherwise.

“If you believe that even if the team starts their run Girardi will actually disrupt a rotation that is working well and winning games to make room for IPK and Hughes just so they can reach their inning counts this year then you are crazy.”

I’m not crazy. I’ve just been paying attention.

They didn’t pass on Johan Santana to watch these two kids dominate the minor leagues.
