Check out the draft picks on ESPN

A little programming note for you:

Stanford will face Florida State tomorrow morning at 2 p.m. (EDT) on ESPN. The Cardinal will be starting Jeremy Bleich while the Seminoles have right fielder Jack Rye.

Bleich was the No. 44 overall pick of the Yankees last week. Rye was their pick in the 13th round.

Interesting story on Rye via Phil Hughes: Rye attended Woodbridge HS in Irvine, Calif. Woodbridge is the only team that beat Hughes in his high school career. They got him once his junior season and once his senior season.

Hughes’ stats were unreal in high school.

  2. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 12 )

Hughes touched 100 mph in H.S.

  3. bronxbomber77 (from worst to first in 2008!) FEAR THE 'STACHE!

“Hughes touched 100 mph in H.S.”

A lot of good it is doing him know.

  4. Web

Where can you find Hughes’ highschool stats?

  5. Guiseppe Franco

    Pete,

Are you sure the time is correct? My TiVo says the game starts at 2pm EDT.

I still love Hughes. Such a sweet boy.

  7. Brandon (supporting "Alex being Alex") (J.Santana HR allowed count: 12 )

Blame whoever changed his mechanics not me. :x

    Brandon, who is blaming you?

    Chill out dude.

  10. bronxbomber77 (from worst to first in 2008!) FEAR THE 'STACHE!

Whoever tinkered with his mechanics should be blamed.

  11. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

    Who changed Phil’s mechanics?

  12. Rob

I don’t think Hughes ever really threw the ball 100 MPH. You don’t go from 100 MPH to 91-93 MPH because of an arm slot adjustment or any other slight mechanical changes to Hughes’ pitching motion.

    From previous thread:

    Y’s Guy,

I understand that you can’t fire 25 guys, but Willie can’t be held completely responsible either is all I’m saying.

I believe Omar Minaya needs to fire himself before he fires Willie personally.

  14. Steph

You could probably find Hughes’ stats on Max Preps.

“And he just freaks out! ‘Mom, what are you doing? Don’t touch my hair! That’s Giambi gel! That’s Giambi gel!’ It was like he was never going to wash it or something.”

Dori cackled as she tweaks her youngest child, laughing often as she talked about his success with a mixture of pride and perspective. She readily admits her initial naiveté about the life of a professional baseball player, and had hoped her son would go to college because “if he goes to college, he’ll marry the right girl and if he goes to play professional baseball, he’ll marry a cocktail waitress.”

“I was so against it,” she said of Hughes turning down a full scholarship to Santa Clara so he could enter the major-league draft. “I remember we were at a game somewhere when PJ was in high school, and the field had a radar gun and one of those boards that showed how fast he was throwing. He threw the ball, and it said 100 mph, and right after that happened, one of the scouts who was there came up to me and said, ‘Well, Mom, he won’t be going to college,’ and I was just like, ‘Excuse me?’ I didn’t know what he was talking about.

Who knows what the hell happened to him.
