"And he just freaks out! 'Mom, what are you doing? Don't touch my hair! That's Giambi gel! That's Giambi gel!' It was like he was never going to wash it or something."

Dori cackled as she tweaks her youngest child, laughing often as she talked about his success with a mixture of pride and perspective. She readily admits her initial naiveté about the life of a professional baseball player, and had hoped her son would go to college because "if he goes to college, he'll marry the right girl and if he goes to play professional baseball, he'll marry a cocktail waitress."

"I was so against it," she said of Hughes turning down a full scholarship to Santa Clara so he could enter the major-league draft. "<b>I remember we were at a game somewhere when PJ was in high school, and the field had a radar gun and one of those boards that showed how fast he was throwing. He threw the ball, and it said 100 mph, and right after that happened, one of the scouts who was there came up to me and said, 'Well, Mom, he won't be going to college,' and I was just like, 'Excuse me?' I didn't know what he was talking about.</b>"

Who knows what the hell happened to him.

From previous thread:

Y's Guy,

I understand that you can't fire 25 guys, but Willie can't be held completely responsible either is all I'm saying.

I believe Omar Minaya needs to fire himself before he fires Willie personally.

I don't think Hughes ever really threw the ball 100 MPH. You don't go from 100 MPH to 91-93 MPH because of an arm slot adjustment or any other slight mechanical changes to Hughes' pitching motion.
