Hideki Matsui had something to celebrate as his grand slam beat Oakland last night. Andy Pettitte was masterful for eight innings, as well.
Phil Hughes has been cleared to throw but will be out until August. This notebook also has updates on Joba Chamberlain, a rare trip to Houston and Jonathan Albaladejo.

Nice win and the start of another one game winning streak …….
Phil Hughes has been cleared to throw but will be out until August.
If you assume that being cleared to throw means you’re healthy, it’s odd to me that it would take him 1.5 months to get back into pitching shape..but that’s just me. I thought it would be more like 3-4 weeks at the most.
Nevermind! I just read this…
Phil Hughes had another bone scan. He will start a throwing program in two weeks. So that’s basically the end of June. We could see him in mid to late August assuming all goes well.
I thought he would start a throwing program immediately.
But this begs the question..why wait two weeks if he’s been cleared to throw? What happens in those two weeks? Working out and trying to gain his arm strength back? If so, how does one do that without throwing?
What a great birthday present for Hideki Matsui. I’m glad we share the same day.

“If Chamberlain gets to 95 pitches, he will be fully stretched out and will not be limited in further starts.”
What happens if he doesn’t reach 95 pitches..?? Will he throw in the pen again..?? I’d hate to see anything slow his becoming fully available in his starts…
