Sometimes i think people on here have never watched baseball in their lives. Its not uncommon at all for players to lose strike zone discipline (not that that has ever been Cano's strength) when in a slump. When players aren't hitting, they often press and swing at too many pitches out of frustration and the idea that you can't get a hit without swinging the bat. In other words, they want the hit so much that they lose the perspective that they are more likely to get the hit if they make the pitcher throw strikes. I think we've all seen A-Rod in that mood when he's pressing.

I'd love if it Cano were more disciplined. But to say that he's not is either because he's a primadonna, is arrogant, or doesn't care, is just bs. Cano is not a rookie that pitchers have suddenly figured out or a washed up veteran. He's only 26 and has a career BA above .300. He's going to turn it around, but he needs to continue to get his ABs to do it. Benching him or platooning him with Gonzalez is crazy talk born of frustration.

And while people are complaining about plate approach, why aren't the same people complaining about Jeter? He only has 4 more walks than Cano this year and has the lowest OBP of his career (a fairly abysmal .330) and the lowest slugging percentage of his career (.370). I think Jeter will play better as the year goes on, but I'd be much more worried about the decline in his game than Cano's.

Wow I can only dream of Ichiro being moved...I absolutely love the way he plays. Once he gets on base, it's impossible to stop him from going all the way to third.

I don't see that happening though, unless M's are bent on completely blowing the entire team image apart and building on ground up.

"Take away his starting role and he will suddenly realize that if he really cares about being the 2b for the yankees for the next 10 years, he better do something about it.

I just don’t think he’s driven by winning. Just reading Pete’s opinion screams that."

If this were true, Cano would be one of the dumbest athletes in the world (because he doesn't understand that playing poorly endangers his career) and also one of the most despicable (because he doesn't care whether his team wins or loses). I think it's infinitely more likely that he's trying his best to get out of a horrible slump than that he's the person you describe.

Another thing Sara, if Willie gets the gas, it's not becuase of last night. It'll be because they've been a slightly below .500 team for the better part of their last 162 games.

I read this blog and plenty of others every day and I have never seen any evidence that Cano is a primadonna or doesn't fully apply himself.

The only reason anyone says otherwise is because he smiles a lot and sometimes clowns around with Melky. I suppose he should punch the water cooler when he makes an out instead.

The Yankees are a strict team full of veterans, and Cano is no veteran. Does anyone really think that the Yankees would let Cano get away with a lackadaisical attitude toward practice and preparation?

Calling Cano a lazy is a lazy way to critique him.

Sara:

In one sentence you give Willie credit for bringing the Mets within a couple outs of the World Series and in the next you absolve him of all that's gone wrong since. Where I grew up, we called that "trying to have it both ways".

Doesn't work that way. He got credit when they came close to winning the NL and now he's deservedly taking heat for the team underachieving.

Fedo..what blinders. The guy has his ace pitcher on the mound who pitches a shut out into the 7th. he gives the ball to his bull pen with a 4 run lead then gives the ball to his closer with a 2 run lead. What exactly did Willie do wrong? Did he not give his team the best chance to win? Is there any manager in baseball who would have done different?

Fredo,

Very funny.

G. Love,

Pete never said that Cano doesn't try hard though when he's in practice. Sometimes you forget what you learn in practice. Last year I recall Long working with Cano extensively before games and basically telling Cano when to swing and when not to swing, eventually it worked out for him.

I also don't think having Melky on the team is making him not hit. I have no idea what he's thinking and neither does anyone else.

Perhaps he's trying to hard right now to show he belongs. Who knows, I just don't think he's struggling due to lack of trying.
